Monday scent of the day 7/8

Posted by Robin on 8 July 2019 293 Comments

Another Monday. What fragrance are you wearing?

I went with Lush Kerbside Violet for a rainy summer morning.

Reminder: 7/12 will be Henry David Thoreau's birthday, aka Simplicity Day. Do absolutely whatever you like with the theme. (My favorite piece about Thoreau and Walden: Pond Scum: Henry David Thoreau’s moral myopia, from The New Yorker.)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I’m wearing Dior Granville, which on my skin is almost unbearably medicinal.

Not only Monday, but Monday after taking a week off from my day job. It’s rough. I’m wearing Yves Rocher Monoi: beach cookies.

Robin I enjoy the revisionist reading of Thoreau from the New Yorker that you linked to.

Lots of good lines but here is a particularly good one:

“But worse than Thoreau’s radical self-denial is his denial of others. The most telling thing he purports to abstain from while at Walden is companionship, which he regards as at best a time-consuming annoyance, at worst a threat to his mortal soul. For Thoreau, in other words, his fellow-humans had the same moral status as doormats.”

While I agree that Thoreau can be an annoying prig, on the other hand I still find some of his writing sublime. You can’t over-estimate his importance to later American environmentalists like John Muir. And I do find occasional traces of wit in his works.

Byredo Sundazed. Nice sweet citrusy and flowery opening. Ten seconds later starts smelling like cheap laundry detergent. It doesn’t develop more than that. Very tenacious. After almost 5 hours it is still going strong. Good for a day where I will be outside at some of the construction sites. Not full bottle or sample worthy. Sample thunk!

Maybe the rain will wash it off for you! I sniffed it in a store, but only on a blotters. It’s not my thing, but I thought it smelled cheerful from a quick sniff. Laundry detergent is a big NO for me, though.

I applied some on a blotter and it was a very nice sweet citrusy scent all the time. On skin the opening changes very quickly and that soapy, super clean smell is really boring. I can still smell it on my arms. The longevity is really good.

Perfumer H Orange Leaf (from a decant). Still on my sample & decant thunking project. Trying to gradually transition my collection to a small number of loved FBs rather than a large number of decants/samples. I wore Child Perfume (from a sample) to the beach yesterday.

Really enjoyed following the bath product conversation from the weekend poll! I’m still working my way through all the comments. Didn’t post because I’m pretty minimal when it comes to bath products (and I mostly prefer them unscented). Some of you have really impressive collections!

She’s done on Friday. She gave 3 weeks but one of them she was out on vaca. She has been with us for 10 yrs and truly the vision of all we do and had significant success with. I feel confident we’ve been steeped in her way of thinking to continue business as is, but what’s next and who’s going to get us there? Big shoes to fill.

I enjoyed my boss as a person, but she wasn’t the best manager. My department was having lots of issues with her in the months before we found out she was leaving. It all started to make sense. She knew in March or April that she was moving away, so she wasn’t fully present at work.

I hope your transition to work life without the boss goes well! It sounds like she’s set you all on a good path.

Wearing Imaginary Authors Cobra and the Canary from my travel bottle. I haven’t worn it in a year or so because I had decided I didn’t like it….now I’m loving it, lots of leather and asphalt but I smell the hay and tobacco flowers underneath, and they come forward in the drydown. I had contemplated putting this on my swap list and now I’m glad I didn’t! So the moral of the story is don’t get rid of anything :)

Very lazy day today, haven’t even showered, never mind applied fragrance! Glued to Wimbledon, as ever, & will be so right up to the finals on Sunday. Finished my sample of Muguet Porcelaine last week, so will have to find something else to wear when I meet a friend for early supper tomorrow evening. Seriously contemplating a Glasgow trip before the end of July to perhaps purchase a bottle of MP from the Hermes concession in Frasers department store. Donated a few blagged samples (VC&A California Reverie, Margiela Beach Walk, CD The Cashmere) to my best friend recently – she likes to wear perfume at work but is reluctant to use up the bottle of Ostara I gave her ages ago just to go to the office!

Kerbside Violet, like many violet scents, works very well on a rainy day. You smell lovely, Robin. And thanks for the link to an interesting article (essay?). I did not read anything by Thoreau, but apparently he was the man with issues, to put it mildly.

I’ll try to use up as many small samples as possible this week. This should make my wardrobe ‘simpler’, provided that I won’t re-purchase, of course.

My SOTD is Organza Indecence (thunk!). A delicious creamy woody vanilla.

Theme today is a throwback: Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop. This summer it has been vetiver. VOTM is Fat Electrician.

I spent most of the 4-day weekend napping and sleeping. Woke up somewhat restored and used my energy to tackle a couple of projects: 1) I finally put my winter perfumes away, which had been sitting jumbled in a box in my perfume dresser. (Was also looking for some rose perfumes and found that I don’t really have any. Wha??) 2) Cleaned some nasty-a$$ sandals that were no longer wearable. How does one keep suede footbeds not-nasty in humid weather? Mine are perpetually gross and wet. If you know, please share.

    Other triumphs:

For the past few weeks I’ve been on a mission to find a swimsuit that is both flattering and comfortable, unwavering in my conviction that I would succeed despite having gained back the 15 lbs I lost 7 years ago. I found two! One is super flattering and quite comfortable; the other is very comfortable and quite flattering.

Thanks! I’ve actually done all of those things except using laundry detergent and water, which I’m surprised that they recommend. (I’m pretty sure I’ve destroyed one pair of Mephistos by using water during the cleaning process.) I’m pretty sure both pairs would’ve stayed in good shape had I stuck to the eraser method, but it’s just way too time-consuming and labor-intensive.

I’m thinking I just need to stuff my shoes with newspaper in between wears so they kind of dry out, which is especially challenging in humid weather. They soak up the humidity from the air like sponges and never dry out. Unless someone else has a better idea…

If you do manage to get them to a dry state (leave them in the sun?) you can use sandpaper to clean suede footbeds. I’ve tried it and it worked well on some Naot sandals.

I’d try putting a couple of washcloths down in the sandals, wear ‘em around for a few minutes and then removing the washcloths. We have seven months of summer here, so honestly, my sandals are often ready for the bin at the end of the season.

Sunny and warm again, wearing Profumum Meringa. I needed something soft and sweet after yesterday’s less than positive experience with Arquiste Nanban. I had put one spritz on my wrist and was enjoying the smell, so then I decided to do a full wearing, spritzing my chest and arms. Unfortunately it overwhelmed me with some very powerful aromachemicals and I had to shower it off as it was giving me a headache.

Just so happened to pick a white button up blouse to wear today, which matches the simplicity theme perfectly. For a white button up shirt equivalent perfume, I went with Serge Lutens L’eau Froide. Trying to fight off the Monday blahs. One of my favorite coworkers comes back from a week of vacation, so I’m looking forward to seeing her. But today is the first day without our boss since her last day was Friday, so that will take some getting used to.

Also, some things I’ve worn a lot in the past several days (since I haven’t been checking in much) are Orris & Sandalwood, Costarela, and Aqua Vitae. I like all of those in the heat and it was definitely hot in Roswell this weekend.

After a long bath last night, however, I tried Une Rose Cypree for the first time thanks to a sample from a NSTer. Big mistake. Must have it. Good grief, it was such a beauty. I sniffed my arm until I fell asleep.

Gorgeous day here. Sunny and not humid. Sotd is vintage Cabochard. I’m keeping it simple this week by wearing whatever calls my name. I used my Sephora points over the weekend on a mini of Dior Joy. The bottle is so dang cute. I put it on a few times, and decided it really does smell like Allure, just more clean and fresh.

That’s how the CPs made me feel, which is why I generally don’t participate. NOT THAT I DISLIKE CPs! I love the CPs and reading other peoples’ interpretations!! (I just had too many bad experiences wearing the wrong thing out of feeling the need to wear something that fit the theme rather than fitting my mood.)

It’s hard for me in the summer because I feel like I should be using my “summer perfumes” even if I want something heavier.

          • therabbitsflower says:
            8 July 2019 at 6:05 pm

I’m kind of the opposite, though I know there have been times I’ve worn the wrong thing for the day while trying to fit the CP. But generally, I like having some theme to follow because I can get overwhelmed with my huge collection when I have no guiding force. Plus the CPs help me wear a variety of my perfumes.

          • hajusuuri says:
            8 July 2019 at 9:56 pm

I like the CPs because it forces me to look at my collectiin to wear one I haven’t worn lately. That said, I am a creature of habit so I usually end up with the familiar anyway.

Happy that today is much cooler than it has been the past week. I broke down and bought a sample of Roja Dove Diaghilev when TPC has a sale going on. I kind of hope that I don’t like it too much, I can’t afford to adore a perfume that will run me $1050. The pricing of perfume has gotten ridiculous in my opinion. Wearing Avignon today and really should start wearing my untested perfume decants.

Yes, it’s Monday. And it’s Monday after an amazing camping trip in the San Juan Islands. While having morning coffee, we saw Orcas swimming by this campground. Turned out to be pods of Orcas that had not been here for 2 months. It was incredible and I wish I were still there instead of back at my desk!

Powering through wearing CJ Scents Vanilla Incense, a lovely mix of myrrh, vanilla and a little musk.

In Eau d’Hadrien from a decant. It is growing on me. There are days when my perfume collection feels totally unsatisfying (how can I have purchased so much and have so little I feel like wearing?!), and others when I am frustrated that I can only really wear and appreciate one perfume at a time… right now I am feeling the latter. So many perfumes to enjoy!

Off topic update: My son arrived home late on Sat., safe and happy from his adventures in the Sierras. Nine days in the mountains, lots of snow (they had to poke holes in the ice several times for water), sunburned arms, and a couple of cooking blisters (sounds like he may be permanently unable to ever face TVP (textured vegetable protein) again)–but he is doing great and the photos he took are incredible. It was just the four boys, and it sounds like they had a blast and are tighter friends than ever. Gah, I will miss him when he leaves for college!!

Oh, yay! So glad to hear he’s back home safe. As a person who grew up eating TVP, I wholly endorse never eating it again ;)

As to feeling unsatisfied (if not somewhat desperate) with collections, I can relate. The one I’ve had the most success with is paring my wardrobe way way way back. Having too many choices prevented me from really seeing the clothes I love. Now I love my all my clothes, and return any and all purchases unless I’m absolutely smitten.

I might have the same response with perfumes, but that itch that can’t be scratched is quite persistent…

You grew up eating TVP? You had such a healthier childhood than I! My dad was like, “Where’s the MEAT??” and although he eats plenty of seafood, vegetable dishes never quite made the grade.

We ate it because we were poor. But I probably ate more healthfully than most since my mom was kinda doing the 70s hippie thing, and cooked all of our meals. Never ate out, no frozen foods, chips & sodas only rarely, etc etc.

My mom cooked all our meals too, but I never heard of TVP until I was an adult. She was a nurse/nutritionist so we ate very well. Maybe it wasn’t widely available in the 60’s.

Has it made some kind of comeback? My quasi-vegetarian niece expressed interest in buying & eating some, not knowing her mother’s and my history of being forced to gag it down as children. Needless to say, it’s not going to show up in their kitchen anytime soon.

Fresh Pomegranate Anise layered over Vent Vert edt. This is a good balance of tart and sweet.

Anyone else remember all those original Fresh fragrances? Currant Marine?

“Simplicity” for me will mean working towards my self-imposed “use it up” challenge, not just this week but every week. I have so many wonderful scents that I just haven’t gotten to, because I hate to start a new bottle before finishing an old one!

Finally drained my beloved Jasmin de Nuit over the weekend.

SarahN, I loved the original Fresh Index scents and Pomegranate Anise is the only one I own. I wish I’d gotten Fig Apricot too, that one was great. I wore Pomegranate Anise last Friday and the funniest thing happened when I went swimming after work. After I got out of the water I kept looking around the beach because I thought someone was wearing Tam Dao. When the smell followed me home I realized it was me! The grapefruity top notes are so pervasive on me that I never noticed the sandalwood base until the lake water washed away all the top notes!

I’ve almost always lived near a lake and often thought about doing that but never did. Now the closest one is Erie, which I guess a person can maybe swim in if one finds the right beach? The only beach I’m aware of is the one that brought us to Cleveland, located right next to a sewer outflow. My H is working on a project to divert the sewer elsewhere so it doesn’t get dumped in the lake.

Scent for probably quite some time: Serge Lutens Encens et Lavande, from a leaky vial sent by Surrender to Chance. I could see how the little spray bottles could be leaky, so I accepted the loss of the 2 or 3 ml of Osmanthus, and some of the Eau d’Hiver. (I was sad, though.) The 1 ml vials shouldn’t be leaky, I don’t think. Fortunately, I like the scent.

The worst thing in the way of leaky samples from them was 5 ml of the Balmain Jolie Madame reissue. I was like, “OMG, what was I thinking!” That involved lots of scrubbing, and tossing the box and packing materials in the trash. After that, lots of tape on the bottle and enclosure of the bottle in several plastic bags. There was a relatively large amount left in the bottle.

Clarifying that today’s leaky vial was a separate order from the order from a few months ago that included Osmanthus and Eau d’Hiver. And that those were both different orders from the one that had the leaky spray bottle of Jolie Madame.

Yes, I figured that would be informative. The next order I made after the leaky Osmanthus and Eau d’Hiver, they wrapped the necks of the little spray bottles in black tape. I thought a customer or two must have said something. The order after that, I wrote in the comments section, “Please wrap the necks of the spray bottles in Parafilm or in the black tape you used last time.” They did. I don’t think the black tape works as well as Parafilm, but it did the job.

I usually get things when there’s some sort of sale, but some of the samples are still not cheap. I don’t know how it works exactly if someone is using perfume math, but in my mind getting a couple of milliliters is cheap compared to getting a $300 bottle. I don’t want the sample to be wasted, though!

There’s a very high mark up…so high that it was worth it for me to buy a bell jar. That said, I already have too much perfume so if there’s something interesting, i would offer up a split and keep some left in the bottle for personal use. If you like a perfume but don’t want to get a full bottle, go to Basenotes and join one of the splits. You can ask if you can “keep the bottle” by buying a certain amount of the total.

SO glad you still enjoy the Eau de Shalimar. Very delicious, I loved it too, but something in it gave me the migraine. So it’s a happy thing for both of us that it works for you!

I still enjoy my precious samples and decants of older Shalimars that fantastic NSTers like you shared with me. Those don’t give me the headache.

I’m wearing APOM today and pondering the concept of simplicity in perfume. Is it a perfume that lacks complexity? A one-note perfume? A perfume with a clear story? Or a perfume that somehow alludes to a simpler life? I can I,Aline various answers. Or if we take Thoreau as our guide, is it something that evokes nature or has been made in an environmentally friendly way? Now I’m truly confused.

      anything you can imagine :D

when I read about the CP for Friday I went to the idea of something that gives me an interior feeling of simplicity and clarity, even tranquility.

I now have 7 years of bad perfume luck.I dropped my Tokyo Milk Dark Bulletproof roll on and it completely shattered.I was distracted thinking about how Bulletproof might be a scent that might fit Morse from Endeavour at this point in his life (after watching the season finale last night). My floor and I are both wearing Bulletproof now!!

I bet your floor will smell great for some time. The last time that I broke a perfume decant my dustpan brush smelled wonderful for months afterwards.

Super late today. I forced myself to wear a different scent today so I don’t become anosmic to my current crush, Vientiane. SOTD was Satori, another beauty.

It’s hard to switch up perfumes when you are in a groove like that, isn’t it?

Oh no, can that really happen? I don’t want to become anosmic to No.19 ?

SOTD = Dior Dune EDT (Vtg)

I have 2 vintage bottles – so good ?. Woody creamy sandalwood and amber made extra interesting by aldehydes!

In other news, has anyone noticed Fragrantica being more prone to the annoying pop ups that congratulate you for being some kind of contest winner or a threat message that your phone has been compromised?

And I meant to mention that I am participating in the CP everyday by wearing something that evokes nature either by its name and/or how it smells and/or a natural perfume.

I didn’t get a threat message, but I got a weird fake email saying that the postal service was trying to contact me about delivery of my order. It wasn’t directly from Fragrantica if I recall. This was about 3-4 months ago when I got my bub of ISM, so I was a bit ticked off at first. I did get my order later that week though.

I haven’t had any issues with pop-up ads, but I also have a blocker installed for those on my browser. Now I am very glad that I do!

I can barely stand to look at fragrantica anymore because of so many pop ups and interruptions. You smelled great today!

Wearing a bunch of sprays of YR My Green Summer; couldn’t barely smell the YR, so I sprayed down my shirt and added some M.Asam to provide some more lime citrus punch.

Was woken up at 2 am with some teens walking through our complex, talking and playing music; yes summer is here! They stuck around for about 1/2 an hour, left, then swung back around 3 am. I tried to be patient and go back to sleep (thinking I was young once, too, lol). At least there were people away today at work (on holidays); I really enjoyed not getting interrupted.

A rather depressing and simultaneously enlightening article ….. the shipwreck was all too easy to visualize. On a lighter note one favorite line jumped out:’ I cannot idolize anyone who opposes coffee’
    ?☕️
The DC heat, humidity and rain are stifling us all. Simplicity would
    be jasmine for me.
