The daily lemming

Posted by Robin on 4 July 2019 7 Comments

Hat tip to David, who found us this bargain at the Harrods sale. The Domus Aurea Diffuser from Dr. Vranjes ("Purveyor of blending the purest natural ingredients with the world's finest essential oils, Dr. Vranjes makes home fragrance a more decadent and luxurious affair. Fitted with a prestigious marble cork sourced from the Apuan Alps, this 24-karat gold leaf bottle is drenched in opulence, making for a stunning addition to your ornamental arrangement.") The 5L bottle was £12,000, now a bargain at £9,599.

You know, if you can’t really take full advantage of the marble cork sourced from the Apuan Alps because you have to remove it to set up the reeds . . .

N.B. The Apuan Alps are close to the equally charmingly named Garfagnana and Lunigiana. The marble, more commonly known as Carrara marble, was what was used in building the Marble Arch in London, and earlier Michelangelo’s David, and the Pantheon in Rome. (Grazie Wikipedia!)

I can’t read or think of Carrara Marble any more without shuddering due to seeing the incredible exhibit of photography (plus more) last fall in Toronto. It’s a project led by Edward Burtynksy showing the vast scale of human intervention in the earth, and one huge image (with videos too) shows the Carrara Marble mine. https://www.edwardburtynsky.com/projects/photographs/anthropocene

“Ministering to the swinish luxury of the rich”, as William Morris put it.

That “just in case you have money to burn” tag is apt here. Wow.

I thought of this when I was looking on the Selfridges website. Apparently ‘chrome hearts’ is an LA based brand , I know nothing about them but I feel like £720 for a 220g candle is a bit rich especially when it’s just in a boring glass jar & only tells me the fragrance is ‘spicy and woody’ ?
