Wednesday scent of the day 6/12

Posted by Robin on 12 June 2019 271 Comments

Hump Day, plus Superman Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I am in a little bit of Tauer Perfumes Au Coeur du Désert.

Reminder: on 6/14, we're doing the picture challenge, edition 4, part 2 (you can find part 1 here). Wear a perfume that matches the picture, which is Georgia O'Keeffe's Blue and Green Music. You can find snippets about this painting here and here.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I wore Anubis today, which I like but someone at work brought in a big bunch of lilacs and now I just want to smell the lilacs.

You smell fantastic. If I ever feel like I’m allowed to buy perfumes again, this will be near the top of my to-buy list. (My no-buy is over, and sadly, a low-buy has taken effect.) Your description of the scent is spot-on.

That is a really good question, and is the real reason I didn’t celebrate the end of my no-buy with a bottle! A suuuper kind NSTer gave me Camel, which WAS at the top of my list, but after Camel, I just have a cloud of second-placers. Second place is shared by Hermes Cardamusc, Byredo Bibliotheque, SHL 777 Rose de Petra, Heeley Note de Yuzu, and MM L’Attesa. I most certainly am not allowed to get FIVE new bottles, and I’m not sure how to pick my favorite, so instead I’m getting nothing at all.

Wow! It is so difficult to chose, because all those perfumes are beautiful! I love Note de Yuzu and it has also been on my top 5 for a full bottle, hopefully some day!

          • Holly says:
            12 June 2019 at 6:13 pm

Are you more of a full bottle purchaser than a decant purchaser?

          • Koyel says:
            12 June 2019 at 6:21 pm

Holly, I used to be all about the decants, but now I’m terrified of evaporation, so I’ve stopped buying them. Travel sprays are my favorite now!

          • Holly says:
            12 June 2019 at 6:53 pm

Ah, I can understand that! I’ve been very lucky in that regard, and only had one decant start to evaporate in the last… decade? However, I don’t enjoy fiddling with decants and yet I don’t want full bottles either! I guess sometimes it’s good to sit the process out and the cream will float to the top…

            13 June 2019 at 2:46 pm

You could check out Basenotes. Splitters tend to like to get rid of the bottle but ask for a minimum keep the bottle amount (usually 60%!ofthe bottle). Sometimes, I purchase at the stated keep the bottle amount and sometimes I wait until I see that a good chunk is taken and I nicely ask the splitter if s/he is willing to ship my decant in the bottle, of course not paying for the atomizer but paying for the higher weight.

Whenever I see 4711 I go straight back to my teens and a dear friend of mine who always had a large bottle of the original on her dresser. She was super cool and so I always thought, even though not a fan, that 4711 is for cool people 😉

SOTM is leftover Amouage Beloved from last night, which was a fun cloud to move around in with the blazing heat!

Not sure what to wear today. Promised several students I would try to “crash” their field day today, the last day of school, to show them I’m ok and wish them a happy summer. Which means I likely should wear something that is more polite than a cloud of Beloved. . . middle school commons in 95F weather might need some, uh, protective armor, though. . .

It has been a very hard year this year–WAAAAaaay more extremely disruptive, mentally ill, and honestly, poorly socialized, kids per class than “usual.” Which means that the “nice” kids are having to deal with a lot. I will not miss this *group* of kids, but there are some amazing individual kids, who have survived a hard year with me, and I look forward to checking in with them and giving them my well-wishes for the summer!

Since I am going to visit my aunt in a few minutes, I am wearing Chanel no 5. I just didn’t know what to wear and just about every perfume that I thought of just didn’t seem to fit.

In this heat my citrus colognes have been in heavy rotation. Will probably start with Guerlain this morning, and then move on to Hermès. My oldest and I are heading into SF late this afternoon to exchange a Hermès tie he got as a graduation gift from his grandpa. It will be fun to have a legit excuse to “ shop” there.

Day 2 of Corsica Furiosa. I suppose I’m matching the green parts of the painting.

There are big clumps of blooming honeysuckle climbing up a fence that I pass on my way to work and the smell is absolutely divine. I very nearly turned around just so I could walk past them again.

In other news, yesterday I received an adorably tiny vintage bottle of Jacomo Silences that I’d ordered last week. Wow that stuff is bracing! I’m really starting to get into that “bitter green” genre of scents that comes from materials like galbanum, petitgrain, and tomato leaf. If anybody knows any other good ones, I’m all ears.

Sotd is Eau Premiere. Today is my granny’s 93 birthday, and I am wearing it in her honor. I can’t be with her today but this is the perfume I’ve worn the last two times I visited her. I think it was LizzieB who suggested wearing a scent for an a association, so thank you for that. I got a text from my mom last night reminding me to call her (thanks mom?) and she ended her text by saying “call often while she still knows you.” Now, my mother is a bit of an alarmist, but that was enough to strike fear and panic through my heart. Her short term memory has been slipping, and I would like to think that the bond we have is strong enough that she will always remember me, but I guess only time will tell. She was only 40 when I was born and became my caretaker much of the time while my parents finished college and worked. It was a role she embraced and still talks about fondly. I got off the phone with her a little bit ago and she sounded great!? Love that lady.

In Xinu OroNardo today. This is a gorgeous tuberose-mock orange combination by the nose Rodrigo Flores-Roux and it feels like being surrounded by an aura of spun gold. I won a vial of this scent and Monstera by Xinu (a unique and beautiful bright tropical green) from a giveaway over on PerfumePosse a while ago, and I’m so glad I did because this brand is pretty amazing! I’m going to pick up samples of the other two Xinu scents on my next luckyscent order.

I’m having a hard time brainstorming a perfume for Friday! I can think of plenty of scents that match the green in the painting, but I don’t know if I have anything that smells cobalt blue/indigo. Usually my color/scent associations are strong, so this is a fun challenge. I think maybe I mostly associate the cobalt with glass and perfume bottles, rather than any specific scent? Like Andy Tauer bottles, and vintage Evening in Paris.

Hope everyone is having a great Wednesday!

I just read Kevin’s review of Monstera and I definitely agree with him—it’s such a good rainforest scent, and something special. I get hints of a pineapple-ish fruit rather than stardew but that’s likely due to skin chemistry. It’s definitely worth a sniff if you run into any in-person!

That one was my least favorite of the series – what do you think? Seems to be more of a nod to the traditional rose/oud combo, but not quite as intense as some. It’s not that I don’t like, I just don’t like it nearly as much as the other two.

This one, the original Calligraphy, is nicely done and I like it, but I don’t think it stands out among the huge number of rose/oud scents out there. Calligraphy Rose is beautiful and I enjoy smelling it, but it is a little challenging for me — it clamors for my attention, somehow, and I’d have to save it for home wear to be happy with it. Calligraphy Saffron is my straight-up favorite of the three: a gorgeous scent that is interesting but isn’t too pushy. So happy to have the opportunity to try them all, though!

I’m another beneficiary of LD’s generosity. I agree in ranking Calligraphy the lowest of the three, but my love in the trio is the rose one! Yum! It’s so rich and chewy, or as Lisa said, “jammy”. Mmmm!

Hi All! In Les Nuits d’Hadrien, which is the opposite of the CP. If I could assign colours to this fragrance it would be dusty browns and mustards. I’m on leave for two weeks from the end of next week and as usual the universe is putting me on trial to make sure that I am utterly exhausted and spent by the time my vacation arrives. My brother has been sick for two weeks and was admitted to hospital only yesterday. We are trying to find my younger son another school. I have written here about our difficulties with his current school, but things have come to a head as in the past I could always say that his teacher was well meaning but inexperienced. He now has a teacher who is bringing her personal issues to school and who resents any child who does not fit into her little box of what the perfect pupil should be like. Please send good vibes as he is writing entry exams this week which will determine whether he gets accepted at this other school. We all need a new start with this, parents and child equally!

    SOTD = Jacomo Silences

My bottle was a gift from a dear perfumista friend. This is a very green version of Chanel No.19 EDP and is also related to Annick Goutal Heure Exquise and Maitre Parfumeur etc Gantier Iris Bleu Gris (I have the vintage).

I suppose I could have waited to wear this on Friday to fit the CP but eh, I can think of a few others I can wear and you know what is tops on the list!

Sounds like I need to try elephant and macaque. I’ve had occassuon to smellthe remnants of a spilled decant from TPC (you have to Payne to use them again). It was green indeed but it smelled “thin”

On me, Macaque has more layers but is also sharper (I think that’s just how I perceive cedar). Elephant has something milky going on in the background, which reminded me a bit of Fils de Dieu.

I have a hard time with the other EDMs, but the bleu one works well for me. It’s more salty, and aquatic smelling. Funny thing is, that under most circumstances I hate aquatics! It really is exceptional imo. I’ve been living off Sephora samples everytime I go, but I think I will get a small bottle this summer.

My cat pointed out that there was a mouse in the house last night. I have never had a mouse before..hopefully it was the only one. It was so small I wasn’t sure what it was at first. My cats were full on patrol mode after that lol.

So gross but grateful for my little mousers.

We still have one place left that will fix an old vacuum, so we’ve had the same Hoover for about 18 years. It works fantastic. But when that place closes, we’ll have to give in and buy a new one.

I’m sampling Cap Neroli. The initial blast felt a little too fresh and bracing for me, but after a short time that phase settled down and I l’m really enjoying it. In the back of my mind, I’m pretty sure I have other stuff that’s quite similar, but who knows what that other stuff is? I guess not me! After yesterday’s fiddling with samples and decants, I’m not in the mood to repeat that process.

I know others have mentioned PdN’s Neroli intense, but the details have slipped my mind. Thoughts? Any comparison to Cap Neroli?

I’m wearing Neroli Intense today (and I thought I posted my SOTD ?)!
The Cap is fresher and greener to me. The Intense is deeper orange with a little beeswax chewiness. It has some green notes but not as bracing
It’s also a little sweeter, but not too sweet. I like both!

I love the colors in the painting, and can think of perfumes I associate with blues and greens to go with it. Reading that to Georgia O’Keeffe it represented the sound of cattle lowing ran counter to my first impressions, but I’m trying to fit that artist intent into my take on the picture.

Scent so far is 4711 Pink Pepper and Grapefruit, from the split of Pixel’s doorstop 4711 bottles. 🙂 This one smells nice and fresh to me, a pleasant cologne.

All the perfumes that I associate with blue and green seem to be the wrong shades so far for the CP. I probably have something but haven’t found it just yet.

CP scent Moonlight Patouchli. I came across a bottle of this in one of those shops that sells bulk packages of cleaning sponges and makeup btands that look suspiciously like melted crayons in gold embossed, clear plastic palettes. But a locked shelf of perfumes turned up trumps with one lonely bottle of MP…a lone voice muttering Oh, the glamour. oh, the glamour amongst a wall of flickering neon tubing at the back of the shopping mall.
I am trying to interest the dogs in indoor activities today as it is cold but we will be off up the hill soon. The gorse is in full flower and there is one track that has pine trees on one side, coconutty gorse on the other…what a great combination. Also, bought a head torch…the dogs eyes are very spooky , neon flashes in the dark.

SOTD is lake water and sweat. Ready for a shower shortly, then maybe I’ll choose something. Corsica Furiosa probably. Still sipping morning coffee, wishing it was iced. This heat, humidity, and complete absence of a stitch of breeze has me cussy and cranky. It’s supposed to “normalize” tomorrow, so we shall see.

Had the first go on an inflatbale kayak I bought after I sold my SUP a few weeks ago. I also purchased a little cart so that I can attach it to the back end, pick up the front and wheel it to the water if I’m a ways away. This morning it was a comedy of errors because although I was able to strap it down snugly (who needs directions?!), the only access to the lake from my campsite is down a 5 foot steep embankment. So that was fun, and even more fun getting it back up when I was done. However, it’s BEAUTIFUL on the water; stable, pretty fast for an inflatable, and has very little wander when paddling.

T-Rex was killing it with her front half propped up on the side, nose to the breeze, snuffling all the smells luxuriously, eyes closed in ecstasy, (a canine parody of George Washington crossing the Delaware!). It does smell astounding fresh and green here, wild foxglove blooming along the shore, the brash, bright green of spring and summer shouting for joy against the backdrop of dark greens and spruce blue from older growth.

Yesterday, we were walking to compactor, when doggo wheeled around, and stood stock still. We were being following by a deer, delicately clomping her way up the path.

Happy Humpday! I’ll be smelling much better very soon!??

I feel much more comfortable on it than I did the SUP. I wanted something I could use in bays and waterways on the Alaskan coast. With the SUP, falling off was guaranteed. With the kayak, a little less likely..??

She loves it, which makes me happy. I often feel guilty because she doesn’t have a “yard” anymore, so I try to be outside with her as much as possible. The sides are low, so even if she falls or jumps off, it will be easy to get her back on by grabbing the handle on her PFD and hoisting her back in.

It sounds like T-Rex found her pure bliss! What a great day you had once you were in the water.

Yesterday for me was a comedy of errors in the morning. I should have stayed home. One of my shoes (well, flip-flops) broke on the way out of the garage, had to go back in to find a new pair of shoes. Then my hubby noticed my t-shirt was on inside out; had to go back inside again to turn it around) Then finally, most of my coffee spilled by the time I got to my desk due to me carrying it in my overstuffed snack bag and juggling all my other daily accessories.

      When do arrive in BC?

Very late to the party. Had one of those days at work that are just plain awful. Feeling really exhausted and exasperated. One more day of work and then on Friday I have an important job interview and two test translations in the afternoon and after that it will be France for 2 whole weeks.

SOTD is Enlèvement au Sérail. Which is evaporating from its bottle like nothing else. I will have to decant the complete contents into another bottle as all that I’ve tried so far to control the evaporation clearly isn’t working.

Now off to read all the other comments and then BED!

Another absolutely gorgeous day here, weather-wise. The cats took full advantage of it by parking themselves in the bay window for an hour or two this afternoon and sunbathing. They all looked incredibly happy and peaceful while doing that. ????

Hello, I haven’t posted in probably a couple years. Joyous sniffings to you!
This painting is easier for me to scent than the last two. I wore Ashoka this morning from a sample because it sounded like it would go with it. Sadly, after a very nice opening, the middle part becomes (on me) a smell something like what’s left after crude oil has been refined as far as it can be.
It faded out by early afternoon so I wore Silences after that. The rose in Silences keeps me from relating it to the painting.
