Tuesday scent of the day 6/4

Posted by Robin on 4 June 2019 227 Comments

It's Tuesday, and the ever-popular Hug Your Cat Day. Also, Eid Mubarak! What fragrance are you wearing?

Me: still at the beach, still in Carthusia Mediterraneo. Tea at the moment is Colombia Tippy Black Organic from Upton.

Reminder: on 6/7, wear a fragrance by Ineke, Imaginary Authors, il Profumo or i Profumi di Firenze, if you have one. Partial credit for any other small-ish brand that starts with the letter I.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the flamingo teapot and mug are $41 at Sugar & Cotton.

I love the scent of fresh peonies. And the blazer sounds lovely!

I fear if I wore a “Chanelesque” blazer, folks who know me would think I was in constume for something. . . I’m not very good at looking professional, even when I’m trying hard at it! ??‍?

I love tweed, and when given the chance when its a bit cool I love to throw this type of jacket over my shoulder.

Even though I am SAHM (stay at home Mom) I am not casual. As in you will not find me in athletic wear per niente.

A serious of events in my life has made me realize I shouldn’t save anything for special occasions. Clothing or perfume :)

I live in jeans. I never used to wear hoodies, but I fear as I’ve become more physically active, they’ve become more of a staple in my everyday wear. I WILL NOT walk around in athletic tights/leggings. I don’t mind them during a jog or while I’m lifting, but as soon as the activity is done, I change into real pants. I feel like I’m walking around in my underwear, otherwise.

When I lived in SF so many people were in their athletic wear constantly, it is a pet peeve of mine and I don’t have many!

I used to have as firm a position as you when it came to leggings! I’m in the Bay Area, so there are belegginged women everywhere. I fell in with some pro-legging friends maybe 1.5 years ago, and then they alerted me to a sale on leggings with pockets at Victoria’s Secret a year ago, so I bought a few. I wore them to work, and a few people noticed and complimented me on them, but then I got self-conscious (and also winter came) and I stopped wearing them to work, though I still wear leggings as pants outside of work with some frequency. THEN about six months ago, a work friend was complaining about people who wear leggings to work, and I said, “Well, I did that for three months last year,” and she stared at me in total shock and disbelief. So I was reminded that no one really cares what I look like and most people don’t even notice. So I might wear leggings as pants again for part of this summer :)

I wear leggings every day of my life.
If Vera Wang could build a financial empire with 600 pairs of leggings, I figure I’m good.

I’m wearing H&M Raconteuse which I ordered blind based on EauMG’s review. Seems like a really pretty if light orange blossom. Sadly the patchouli one which I really wanted to try wasn’t available anymore.

    Hello everyone!

As some of you may remember, I’m on a mission to wear each perfume in my collection once. Well, with very little repeating, I’m getting much closer. I’m down to vintage-and-doesn’t-last-six-hours and when-am-I-going-to-want-to-smell-like-this bottles. Haven’t officially counted but this may be my last month!

I’m in Calyx, with Prescriptives on the box. I love that green fruity opening!

“When am I going to smell like this” is such a hard category to identify in the moment, when one is making a purchasing decision! At least, for me it is. I’m often surprised at what turns out to be less versatile than I think it will be.

Wearing a sample of Nuit Des Bourbon by Princesse Marina De Bourbon.
Not bad. A musky fruity rose which reminds me of Narciso Rodriguez For Her EDP. But Nuit des Borubon is a bit too sweet for my liking, and I miss the patchouli which I enjoy in Rodriguez. The dry-down seems identical or almost identical to Rodriguez.

We’re having a bbq at work today that I’m pretty excited for. One of the VPs and one of our SVPs are doing pulled pork, ribs, and maybe brisket too. And we’ll have sides. Counting down until lunch time!

No SOTM. I’m a little queasy this morning from not sleeping well last night. I don’t want to add to the sensation with too much *input*. Hopefully, there will be a squirt of something later.

Thank you, everyone, for the TV recommendations yesterday. I decided to start with the ABC murders, as John Malkovich as Hercule Poirot was too much not to give a go! I’m genuinely terrible at sitting still, so I only watched 1 3/4 episodes, but I’ve enjoyed that much so far. It is interesting to me that it feels both period and culturally relevant for today. I’m not accustomed to to thinking of Agatha Christie as an especially political writer, but perhaps I was making assumptions? I know her more from the adaptations of her work than from reading them myself.

Spent the morning on the phone regarding a health insurance coverage issue. Ugh. I have what most would consider good coverage, but any need for assistance seems to generate a veritable cascade of logging into different accounts, calling various 800 numbers, listening to customer service reps say it is necessary to call a different number, and generally, a lot of internal screaming into the void. Crazy making. At long last, I think the issue is resolved. Keep your fingers crossed!

Wearing the first bottle within reach – SL Chypre Rouge – and using it as a guided visualization tool (by imagining that I am walking through a pine forest while inexplicably chewing on Red Hots) in order to get myself into a better mood. It’s working!

Looking forward to smoother sailing for the rest of the day.

I’m doing the CP today in some Ineke samples from “Deluxe Volume 2” sample set I bought ages ago. It has perfumes A-E. I’ve never found any of her scents that I’ve tried to be particular winners, though they are all very nice, and beautifully boxed and conceptualised. It’s a good idea to revisit them. So this morning I’ve put on “A” (After My Own Heart”), with lilac and raspberry etc.–pretty but too sweet; “B” (Balmy Days and Sundays), green, freesia, honeysuckle–this is my favourite so far; and “D” (Derring-Do), citrus, magnolia, wood notes–it’s got something a bit strident in there but I can’t identify what. I’ll see how they all do after a few hours more and then I’ll probably try and report in on “C” (Chemical Bonding) and “E” (Evening Edged in Gold) tomorrow. If anyone has a particular favourite from these or the rest of the alphabet, for that matter, I’d love to hear what it is and why you like it–I’m interested in testing some more.

My sample set did not include C. Of the ones you mentioned, Evening Edged in Gold was my favorite, though I haven’t worn it enough to decide if I would want any more than the sample. It wasn’t an instant, “Must get me a full bottle, stat!”

My faves of hers are Field Notes From Paris and Idyllwild. I will consider a FB of both one of these days… I also think Hothouse Flower is nice.

A and B were too fresh and transparent for my taste.

All three you’ve mentioned are my favorites from the line (and I have bottles of these). At least when it comes to Ineke, we’re definitely scent twins!

If I’d only sniffed a particular half of the line, I’d have come away with the same impression. Definitely recommend sampling Idyllwild and Field Notes if you have the chance and haven’t already (LOL, and if those weren’t the ones you didn’t like…)

What a charming teapot and cup!

SOTD = Rania J Ambre Loup

    Cool enough to wear today!

I found a perfume store in Sorrento (Sabine Perfume boutique) which carried all sorts of niche lines including Rania J. Ambre Loup was the only one out of stock!

    Commuting Woes:
I don’t know what it is with commuters and personal space, especially as it relates to yours truly — yesterday, I was waiting at a relatively empty platform in the late afternoon and these 2 guys decided to stand thisclose to me to the point where every time the one next to me spoke, his elbow would hit me. I finally had to flick him off because there was absolutely no reason on God’s green earth that they have to stand right there!

This morning, there was just an inescapable overall miasma of bad breath. Yuck! I have never been so glad to leave the train to get to work!

I just saw a mini review for Ambre Loup on You Tube. Ami Loves Perfume did a review of her favorite amber scents.

I feel your commuting pain. Nothing can be worse than the farting?

I commute in my own little car, so I cannot speak to that; however, I have been to shows where there was plenty of space in a venue and someone stood not only right into my bubble, but right in front of me, into my bubble, so my hands were grazing their hind-end. After a few polite nudges, I stuck an elbow in his back.

Maybe they stood next to you because you actually smell good, which is a rare for a warm day in NYC (or any given day) on any platform!
If I had to pick a seat I would be sitting next to you if I had to commute. ;)

    Happy Tuesday! عيد مبارك!

    1) I got my certificate in the mail yesterday afternoon! I am now qualified to design systems for urban and exurban areas- this include water, pedestrian/bike and parks. But whom am I kidding? I will probably wind up working again in tech.

    2) Followup to the visit to IKEA: It was a very productive and illuminating visit; the people there are totally not interested in what HGTV is doing. Instead, they want to know what YOU do in your kitchen, do you have disabilities, family members, etc. Then they take your measurements of the room, what you like in the catalog and go from there.
The kitchen estimate included taller upper cabinets, allowances for spices, oil and wine, extra wide drawers for pots, pans, and food storage in glass containers, enclosure for the refrigerator and a new island with sink and dishwasher and butcher block workspace. All together it was $7500; this cost does NOT include appliances nor the top for the island. It also does not include installation. This seems to be about what I expected; the design is highly customized and includes glass doors on the uppers. Will now double check with some smaller places in town.

    3) Long and busy day! I am in a combo of Kai body wash and a spritz of Chanel 5.

      1) Environmental engineering? I have a niece in that field.
      2) That price sounds really good for customized caninets.
      3) You smell great!

        1) Not engineering per se. I would be the ideas person and set up surveys initial design and studies. The engineer would do the final design based on my studies and build out. Together we would present a budget to the regulatory body.

        2) Honestly, I think that the price is a VERY good estimate for the customization.

Sounds like a good experience with IKEA! How nice they actually care how you use your kitchen!

You are in the Portland area, yes? Seems like there’d be a market for that sort of work–although I bet it pays pittance compared to Intel or Nike. . .

        1) The IKEA kitchen planner was really kind and helpful! And I think that it is key to understand how you use a kitchen- it is a workspace first and foremost!

        2) This is a fragrance blog so *safety glasses on* let me expound a tiny bit.
The incredible success of internet based services and products has made the Northern West Coast the richest place on the planet, and that has washed over to a lot of stuff. This means people are moving in leaps and bounds to the West Coast, and materials and resources are being used. There is actually an opening market for systems and how to use things efficiently while meeting certain environmental standards. Nike and Intel actually don’t pay as well as people think, and those companies are actually facing some problems internally. A better more sustainable living can actually be found in the smaller tech and materials companies here in PDX, Bend or Seattle. *safety glasses off*

Thank you for such a complete answer! No need to remove your safety glasses on my account. ?? I’m happy to hear there are other options. I would imagine it becomes a sort of “gig” scenario for lots of folks–piecing together work from several sources? My friends in the Bay Area all seem to work like that. . .

Oh Goodness, the Bay Area! We have people on the blog who are Bay area people and I have NO IDEA how they do it. I mean, $5K in rent, and crazy priced houses. YIKES! You need three jobs just to keep up!

        • Koyel says:
          4 June 2019 at 9:23 pm

Bay Area person here! You know how we deal with $5k rent + crazy priced houses? We spend a ridiculous amount of money on rent to live in a place where the landlords make all the rules, and we don’t buy houses :( We have been looking at houses for the past few months, and $3M houses near us are dinky and awful. We can’t afford anything we want to live in. We can’t even afford things we don’t want to live in.

    Flamingos are so effortlessly decorative.

Went perfume testing at lunchtime. Un Jardin sur la Lagune, disappointing, I find it banal, the other Jardins are much more distinctive, Acqua di Parma Ambra: hated it, too musky and I detected oud, Gelsomino Nobile is going to be discontinued I was told by a very friendly and helpful SA, Laura Mercier l’Heure Magique is fine but not as extraordinary as Lumiere d’Ambre.

This evening I reached for Miss Dior vintage EDT and it certainly put things into perspective.

I completely agree, Lillyjo, sur le Nil smells good on my skin and has such a nice development from mango to incense, I find apres la Mousson a bit difficult, it works for me only in the dry heat of Provence where I have my bottle, Lagune is vaguely marine and salty but so generically so, it has no development it’s a real let down, I am not impressed with perfumer Christine Nagel so far.

I did some perfume testing today, too. :) I had read the discussion here a few weeks ago about Amazing Grace perfumes. After trying a couple of sorts, I ended up getting a small bottle of Amazing Grace Ballet Rose at Ulta.

I went to Sephora after lunch, and tried some of the Hermes Jardin perfumes. I liked sur le Nil quite a lot. I asked one of the helpful sales assistants for a sample to take home. I liked Un Jardin sur la Lagune all right on paper, but didn’t try it on my skin. I liked the sur le Nil better, though. I have a manufacturer’s sample of Monsieur Li at home to try, also. I ended up getting a travel size of Atelier Cologne Vanille Insensee at Sephora, since I like that one and it doesn’t make Dad cough.

I already have several things to confess to Donatella for April/May/June, and it’s barely June! lol. Oh, well.

Home with my youngest (“Mom, is hug your cat day an actual thing?”) in bed, both of us on our iPads. I should be working, but the stuffing’s been knocked out of me, the both of us—need a nothing day I guess. My son had his third minor surgery of the month yesterday—and I do mean minor, yesterday was the only day he needed general anesthesia. But golly it has taken something out of me to be back in the hospital a third time, actually sixth if you count lab work and doctor visits, in less than 28 days. I. Am. Tired. Girding myself for a few chores this afternoon, but otherwise am fulling embracing hugging the cat and working on mindless word games. Perfume for such a day is the remnants of Bal d’Afrique hair perfume from last night before I went to bed.

I sought out my options for a bottle quite a while back, and discovered that there have been two versions and I have no clue which version my sample came from! Has anyone tried this one and if so, which version/thoughts ? My usual m.o. would be to order a decant to further explore, but none of the usual suspects carries it. Currently sitting at Intercontinental Airport Houston (in the Exec Lounge as we splurged on Business Class tickets this trip!) waiting for our flight home to Aberdeen via London. Have managed to use a considerable amount of my Margiela’s Promenade in the Gardens during our almost 2 week visit to our friends in Oak Ridge North. Fragrance offerings in DF here are poor, surprisingly, & I didn’t have much opportunity to look elsewhere during our time here. except for the local Nordstrom (very underwhelming) & Sephora, where nothing jumped out at me either, although the adult son of our hosts accompanied us that day so I didn’t feel I could linger! Very sorry to leave our friends, we’ve had a lovely time, as we always do, & can’t wait for our next visit.

I’ve had a very busy morning that has prevented me from checking out NST so far, but I’ve been smelling great in Angelique Noire.

BUT WHY ISN’T ANYONE TALKING ABOUT JEOPARDY!?????

The fiance headed out to Boston before me to hang out with his family, SO I HAD TO WATCH LAST NIGHT’S SHOW ALL BY MYSELF. WHY HASN’T IT FILLED MY FACEBOOK NEWSFEED AND CLOGGED MY TEXT INBOX? Gah! Still reeling!

Well I don’t want to write it here, in case someone doesn’t want it spoiled.

Wait, what am I talking about? It’s Jeopardy!

JAMES HOLZHAUER WAS BEATEN! Ahhhhhh. He had 32 consecutive wins and ended up with $2.3M, which is just less than Ken Jennings’s record streak from something like 15 years ago!

Ok, as I’m typing this out, I’m starting to think maybe no one else is talking about it because this wasn’t life-changing to that many people. OMG I’m a nerd.

A lot of people complained that James was like a Cyborg, but being part Cyborg myself,* I was quite attached to him. This has been devastating to me but maybe not so much to too many other people.

*For anyone who’s about to complain that a Cyborg is already part person/part machine and therefore it would make more sense for me to say that I’m a Cyborg than to say that I’m part Cyborg, you might well also be a Cyborg, so we should build each other up instead of tearing each other down.

I saw it. It’s required viewing in my house. My husband is the fan. It was pretty suspenseful and glad it’s a woman!

Haha! You’re definitely right about the suspense. After it ended I sat in front of the TV still just clutching my face in disbelief. It’s required viewing in our house, too!

I’m glad he was beaten by a woman, if he had to be beaten, and I’m glad it’s a woman I liked (and not someone dreadful, like Robin Falco, who has since gone on TV to badmouth James for, effectively, winning). But I’d have been even more pleased if it had been a woman who had played as brilliantly as James had! Who knows, maybe Emma will be as great as James.

I saw both the Jeopardy episode, and some of the spoliers about it. A fun fact: both James Holzhauer and Ken Jennings were defeated by women.

But wouldn’t it have been even MORE fun if the two most wonderful and exciting Jeopardites of our lives had been women themselves?! You know, KJ was the winner in a very formative time of my life, so a teeeeeeeny part of me is glad that James didn’t beat his streak. Anyway, I’m just glad I love both James and KJ to bits. Must have sucked to watch all those games if you didn’t like them.

I found James Holzhauer rather charming and self deprecating. He was also scary fast on the buzzer. I can respect that, and enjoyed watching him. There were also a couple of games where another contestant gave him a fight until the end, so it wasn’t like watching an AI playing.

Emma Boettcher is no slouch herself! It will be interesting to see how she does.

We have been recording the show of late, including last night. Not surprisingly, my husband heard the news ahead of time and didn’t want to watch. I had commented the other day that James seemed to be losing his spark. Wondered if he was getting tired and was ready to move on. I liked his style of play and his demeanor.

I saw the spoilers about the episode in the Washington Post on Monday morning. I told Mom I wasn’t going to spoil it for her, though. I was in another room for the first segment of the show, and then came in and watched the end of the first round and the rest of the show. Mom guessed “Christopher Marlowe” for the final answer. I kept quiet.

But Mom and Dad watch Jeopardy faithfully. I watch sometimes, and sometimes just hear it from another room.

Jasmins Marzipane today because I used some of the sample of Jasmine Sky bath powder. Will be spritzing on more soon as I head out to my monthly knitting group. I only have a scarf/hat combo and a man’s hat to turn in. Will pick up more yarn and hopefully get more done this next month. I was distracted by reading a lot the past few weeks.

Saw Rocketman. Liked it. I liked the non-linear aspect and that it’s actually a musical, not a biography. Obviously will be on Broadway and West End at some point. I was glad to see Elton and Bernie have always had a good relationship. Makes me happy, since they’re such perfect collaborators.

We provide knitted goods to an organization that serves elderly and homeless. I try to do a hat a month for a man and then either shawl or cap/scarf combo for women. They provide yarn. So it’s a win/win. I get to improve my knitting skills and play around with styles and they get product.

SotD = Assam of India for Tea for Tuesday + a smidgen of Somei Yoshino from a sample

SY must not be registering with my nose today. It smells odd, but oh well, Assam of India is always right.

Eid mubarak! My friend Razia wished me well and told me she is relieved to end her period of fasting. Accidentally, or coincidentally, I wore a black kurta with white embroidery over white leggings to school today. It’s very comfy, has pockets, and was given to me by a friend. I love it.

Hope everyone had a terrific Tuesday. :D
