Lazy weekend poll ~ open thread, International Museum Day 2019

Posted by Robin on 18 May 2019 187 Comments

We're celebrating International Museum Day (and Tina Fey's birthday) with our standard issue open thread poll. Talk about anything you like — the fragrance you’re wearing today, the flowers that are blooming in your town right now, whatever.

Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

Note: top image is Chionanthus virginicus, fringetree 2, Howard County, MD, HeLoMetz_2017-05-26-18.48 [cropped] by USGS Bee Inventory and Monitoring Lab at flickr; public domain. (My own fringe tree is blooming right now, and I promise you it is the best smelling thing in my town.)

I’m attending a wedding, otherwise I would have gone to visit some museums this evening.

More than words smells of easy oud with fruits and roses, it’s extremely pleasant.

I don’t know about everyone else, but I am alternating some brutal editing with time outside in the (so rare lately I’d forgotten what it felt like) sunshine and pleasantly temperate air.

There was no chance to post this morning! I stayed up very late watching Season 5 of Shetland and then slept late and then did my morning chores VERY slowly.

It’s my kind of day – Museum Day. Some day, I will train to be a docent.

I am off to my Naples and Amalfi Coast walking tour! The traffic is pretty bad getting to JFK but we gave ourselves plenty of time to get there. I’m commando right now but may spritz a little bit of something once I am past TSA. Perfumes I brought include my standard No.19 EDP, No. 5 EDT, Cedrat Enivramt and something else I don’t recall. I forgot to bring a watch but will just buy one at the airport; after all, I am due for a new Swatch watch. I’l get a bracelet once I get to Rome. I will not be off the grid but posting will be light. Maybe I’ll do more on Instagram. who knows? I’l be back in 12 days!

Received my blind buys package yesterday, which is always fun. Out of four, a clear winner – Aramis Calligraphy Saffron. The others were super-duper cheap, clearance bin items – Histoire d’Amour and Jai Ose did not work out, but Mackie Iridescence is surprisingly fun (I could see myself spraying this around the house for a fruity-floral, aromatherapy pick me up).

But, the Aramis Calligraphy Saffron makes the entire purchase worthwhile. What a gorgeous scent. I have always thought of Aramis as a retro department store fragrance, that always brings to my mind soap-on-a-rope, so this is a welcome surprise.

Calligraphy Saffron is a rich and spicy oriental, with marigold, saffron, tonka, and rose notes. Definitely middle-eastern inspired, but doesn’t present me with any of the challenges I sometimes encounter with ouds or saffron/rose blends. Strong, and long-lasting. I am so happy with this – I’ve been doing that “stick the nose in the chest while while making a tent with the shirt” move all morning.

In the true spirit of the blind buyer, after my exciting initial experience with the scent, and followed up with some perusals of various perfume reviews, I went and blind bought Calligraphy Rose and the original Calligraphy, as well as a back up bottle of Calligraphy Saffron.

Now that I am reading what I just wrote, it occurs to me that I might have a teensy problem (as if the size of my perfume collection wasn’t a clue).

Good for you! A blind buy that worked out. Should I be embarrassed or ashamed about the amount of blind buys and just plain plowing through dough on wants?

I blind bought Book, based on reviews. It kept getting compared to Santal33. Naturally, that was today’s blind buy. When I wore Book, it smelled exactly like Wrappings. Exactly. Which I already have a few of. I wanted to compare the three. That’s my excuse!

          Quick note:
I haven’t been too impressed with Commodity. Each one I’ve sniffed has smelled exactly like other perfumes. It is like a luxury dupe perfume brand, to me. Their Rain could be Terra Nova or Auric Blends.

          That said, still perfume!

I’ve been putting Histoire d’Amour and Jai Ose in and out of my cart for months – can you describe them more? Do they smell “screechy”? Will you test them out more? I’m curious. There are a few written reviews of Histoire d’Amour, but I only found 1 video in Russian, which I don’t understand.

Just had brunch at a new-to-us restaurant in a neighborhood we’ve never explored. Now we’re going to walk along Lake Washington on a sunny 65 degree day. Perfect. Then heading to another neighborhood to thrift and vintage shop and eat ice cream! I’m in Infusion d’Iris Absolue on top of the last drops of an IdI decant.

I won’t be answering any email on Sunday morning… I am working the kitchen at my husband’s fire department’s pancake breakfast. Here’s hoping my helpers don’t flake like they did last year… I ended up solo! I made pancake batter, juice, and watermelon slices for 250, on my own. I was sure tired at the end of that event 🙂

Such a gorgeous day today! Bright, sunny, warm, breezy. Spring is finally here! We really deserve it! I am at the park right now with my doggy and enjoying the walk outside the most. I am in Gucci Envy.

Tonight, I will meet some friends for dinner. Looking forward to having a great time. I am going to wear Tom Ford Fleur de Chine. Is there any perfume similar to Fleur de Chine? I will finish my sample today and I am not thinking about replacing it, especially if it is discontinued. Any suggestions?

Sotd is Confetto, from a sample. This is the second time I’ve worn this and today I pretty much dumped the rest of the sample on myself and boy do I smell good. This one checks all the boxes for me: almonds, musk and powder. I’ve read lots of comparisons to Hypnotic Poison, but I’ve never worn that one so I can’t speak to that. What doesn’t check the box for me is the price. Oof. I love the color of the juice too, so pretty. If I were to pair it with a song it would be The Psychedelic Furs Pretty in Pink.

Perfume-free as yet as I make breakfast, but I can still detect the traces if last night’s Rose d’Arabie. That was the first Armani Privé I tried, and it turns out I like quite a few of them, which is a bit hard on the finances. At least I have the comfort of a whiff of perfume, as I wrestle with some very unsuccessful pancakes. It’s the same recipe I always use, but they’ve come out rather soggy.

    Happy weekend, all!
No SOTD today, although maybe I’ll venture upstairs to spritz something–conversation here may inspire me!

Tuesday I joined Team NoUterus, and I have been at home resting since that evening. Amazing to me that it is an outpatient procedure (when performed laparoscopically). It means I am out of my classroom the rest of the year, and now I can lay around our new house wishing I could pick more things up so I could begin to properly unpack them. . .

Started off in Bottega Profumiera Gourmand, then later added some Vanille 44. I will top off with more Gourmand shortly. Saw lots of pretty daffodils and tulips on my dog walk today. Dark and grey here with more rain on the way though. The lilac buds are still tiny and tightly closed, but the magnolia flowers are unfurling nicely.

Now trying Baiser Vole Lys Rose. I think this was from a swap with Elke? (Thank you!) This is nice. I didn’t want to wear a floral scent while we were outside at the park, but I’m inside now and there’s a screen between me and the wildlife. It’s a nice evening, too.

We’re getting some massive rain right now. Fortunately it wasn’t so heavy earlier in the day when I had to drive to and fro (and through) the city. Now I’m snuggled up in bed, because house is cold (In May! In Northern California!) and contemplating catching up on GOT.

Started out in Ineke Fieldnotes From Paris with a dab of No 19 parfum. Later some Coromandel (soon will thunk my sample).

I had thought that California could badly use moderate amounts of rain at a time, on a regular basis. I saw on the news last year about the terrible wildfires in California because there had been a drought for a long time and the brush and trees were so dried out. It doesn’t seem like there’s much of a happy medium on the West Coast regarding the rain so far this year. But I guess it’s good that you’re getting rain in California?

Know many people who have lost homes in wildfires the last couple of years. My mom is a nurse; her hospital had to evacuate (Santa Rosa fires), buildings immediately next door completely gone, hundreds of employees lost their homes. Dozens of doctors have permanently left after losing homes. My parents had their bags packed, ready to evacuate, could see smoke on distant hills from their windows. I was glued to the online fire maps for days as those fires burned, tracking containment percentages. But we were lucky.

“No happy medium.” Err, yep. Tons of rain over the winter, many people within a few miles of me have had to sandbag multiple times over the winter. On the news tonight, in different communities, people sandbagging. Russian River overflowed a few months ago, loads of people’s homes flooded.

Don’t think this current rain is doing us much good, reservoirs already full.

And then, after years of drought, the tree root systems all dried out, we get trees coming down with the rain. I live on a cul-de-sac, we were blocked in 3 times this winter due to downed trees and power lines. Some people have been killed from falling branches.

In sum: yep, the weather’s been bonkers here for a few years.

Yeah, we finally caved and turned the heat back on a couple nights ago. Feels crazy doing that in mid-May, especially when we had temps in the 80s several weeks ago, and since the winter was so incredibly mild. This week has felt like February!

One of my go-to fragrances when I was dating was FM Lipstick Rose. It is soft, pleasant and just a bit unusual, which I think translates into flirty pretty well. I also liked soft, musky oriental fragrances like the original Omnia or Jacomo #8. Something about spices reads “sexy” to me, but without the cougar vibe of an 80’s big-hitter.

What do *you* feel flirty in? Musk? Spices, as MR suggested? I had some Different Company Jasmine de Nuit which was rather “rrrow”, but that sounds too bwf for your taste.

Just had a look at my perfumes, and the most come-hither perfume might be Lancome’s Oud Bouquet. I think Prada Candy might be in the same neighourhood – again, if you yourself like it.

Woke up this morning in Chanel no 19 EDP. Now it’s off to bathe one of the dogs since his coat is too oily for my liking and he smells a little doggy. The puppy rolled in something a couple weeks ago, so she is good on her bath. I think I will wear Sarrasins again today after Jake gets his bath and I get a shower.

I went through my clothes closet and drawers. I had to finally admit that I have become a little fluffy (as Deva puts it) I also had to admit that I’m just to old to wear certain things. Sigh… I’m not a clothes hoarder, so I’m left with work clothes and some jeans. I threw out my worn out jean jacket, which was hard. Sotd is Aedes de Venustas for another rainy day with storms approaching. I also spent a little time searching for a deal on Cuir Cordoba. My current obsession. I came up empty.

Just went for a spin around the garden and noticed that some of the irises are finished as are the tulips; the bleeding hearts are starting to fade. My daylilies are going to be massive this year so looking forward to them!

I put on some Love’s Lemon this morning but can’t smell anything anymore. Not sure if it’s from the oil I used to make scrambled eggs; my hubby said it smells like motor oil.. ugh. It was grapeseed oil, but I think it may have to be refrigerated or at least kept in a dark closet. Going outside for some exercise and fresh air to clear my nose.

It poured rain here last night and this morning is patchy sun/clouds. I’m wearing D600 to sweep out the garage and tidy things up.

I fell in love with Tom Ford’s Lost Cherry over the weekend but I certainly can’t afford that price tag, so does anyone have some recommendations for cherry or almond based scents? It turns out I love that note, unexpectedly.

I’m with you in those notes. No real recommendations, though. My main almond ones are Elie Saab L’eau Couture, which is pretty sweet and a fresh almond. And Jasmins Marzipane from Lancôme. But neither is cherry. Love cherry.

Guerlain La Petite Rose Noire Black Perfecto has cherry and florals and a bit of leather, and I think its cheaper than most Tom Fords.

Well, i mostly don’t like cherry perfumes but I love almond. PdN Kiss Me Tender. A slightly silly name but the notes I get are marshmallow-almond, hay, and a touch of anise. A little sweet but very pretty. Also Lumiere Blanche by Olfactive Studio. Sorry I can’t be more helpful.

I adore Lost Cherry too. I also have Mancera Black Cherry and it is very nice, but no clone of LC. I don’t have any empty vials or I would send you some.

Thank you for your generous offer, ScentSpirit! But it’s okay that you don’t have any, I’m going to check out Black Perfecto since that one apparently has a good cherry note in it.

Wearing Silk Road Caravan today. Nice light scent for a warm and rain-free (finally!) day.

In Matin d’Orage all weekend since I want to thunk this bottle by end of summer. It was gloriously warm and sunny, so perfect weather for it.

I love museums! And I will be in Madrid next week, so definitely going to see some world-class art museums. Is anyone on the lis in or near Madrid? Want to meet up? Does anyone have perfume recs for Madrid? Sadly, I will not get to Barcelona at all.

Le Secret du Marais, Calle Hortaleza 75, Madrid is a really nice perfume store. They have a website so perhaps you can decide what you’d like to try beforehand. They have a huge selection of niche perfumes. It is easily accessible from at least two metro stops. There is a nice food market in a neighbouring street, the Mercado San Ildefonso. And go to the Thyssen Bornemisio gallery for the Impressionists and a couple of Lucien Freuds.

A smile and wave to everyone who wore an iris scent today. My SOTWeekend is Lancome Iris Dragees. Its new to me, and I’m in love. Reviews have said that its faint but yesterday I was overdressed and warm and that scent traveled.

We finally had decent weather this weekend. It even hit low 70s with sun all day on Saturday! Woot! Today was not as nice but not terrible either. I cleaned house all day on Saturday and today I started raking over and weeding my raised garden beds. Three down with three to go. I use a tool that looks somewhat like a hoe but it has tines rather than a blade. It’s pretty heavy labor but works well to turn the soil into powder while churning up weeds so I can remove them more easily.
SOTD was FM Ead de Magnolia. It was so perfect.
