Tuesday scent of the day 5/14

Posted by Robin on 14 May 2019 210 Comments

Tuesday and Sidney Bechet's birthday. What fragrance are you wearing?

No community project points for me today in Cartier Baiser Volé. I am drinking a cup of Cacao Kisses black Colombian tea from Upton.

Reminder: on 5/17, it's the cheap thrills special, brought back by request. Wear something that costs $50 or below, double bonus points if it costs $25 or below. No points for wearing something expensive that you bought cheaply via a sample or decant or somesuch! We're trying to find real bargains here.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Wearing Guerlain Habit Rouge, another cheap thrill perfect to cheer me up on a cold, dark, rainy day.

Habit Rouge is great. I gave away about half a bottle I had in a freebiemeet, but I’ve found myself wishing I hadn’t haha.

Ah! We make those mistakes once in a while. I have given away expensive perfumes, which I later regret deeply. That is even more painful!

No doubts Habit Rouge is really good!

Bonus points — Pino Silvestre. It even comes in a nifty pine cone-shaped bottle. Had its hey day, I guess, at about the same time as Ms. Day. (Quite the animal lover, she, through her foundation,)

That tea sounds right up my alley, Robin!
I’d love to try a cacao flavored tea. Do you recommend it?

SOTD: Séville à l’Aube, lavishly sprayed!

I had a quick Saks visit this weekend and tried the new L’artisan Bana Banana — wow! What a scent, and totally reminded me of banana Wonka Runts. I thought it was quite fun and yet I didn’t try it on my skin, just a blotter. Hopefully, we’ll see a review here soon! 😉

Banana-scents are having a moment, I think, as I recall seeing another new one on Twisted Lily’s site recently.

It is flavored with cocoa husks & nibs, so it is only a tiny bit sweet, and also has a touch of bitter balancing the sweet — there is a vague undertone of chocolate but not much more. That is perfect for me (I am going to reorder for sure) but if you are looking for a punch of chocolate you won’t find it!

Oh bummer, it’s such a nice one! I’m wearing it again today because it behaved so nicely yesterday (and also because I need to reapply every two hours, so today’s use might kill the sample).

Haha, is that where you got your own doorstop bottles? 😉

I just looked and they have the original 4711 in 27.1 oz!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! for $52. I just cannot even conceive of a 27.1 oz bottle.

In any case, I certainly don’t want a doorstop bottle of it; just a weensy 10 mL travel spray would be what I’d want. But given that the 5.7 oz bottle of Lavender & Thyme is $21, I sure see how you ended up with as much 4711 as you have. I’m just surprised you didn’t accidentally get the rest of them, too.

27.1 oz would be around 1 & 3/4 pounds of cologne, if I’m calculating right. That’s a whole lot of cologne. lol.

ROFL at “I was demonstrating restraint.” You tried. However, I looked at FragranceNet because I got curious about those sales, and got quite a bit, mostly samples. I’ll report back on what samples I liked. 🙂

As pixel pointed out, you still can buy it from discounters.

However, I thought I had time to finish my 400 ml bottle 4711 Original before switching to Lavender & Thyme. 🙄 If they discontinued it, I should make a decision soon.

I am considering my 30ml bottle of Fat Electrician a bargain since it comes in at $42. Not to think too hard on the matter, but I’m curious if everyone still thinks of smaller bottles as bargains? 30ml I don’t question quite as much because that is still a full size bottle of perfume to me. What about brands that offer 7.5~20ml travel sprays at good prices? Still bargains? These sizes are especially desirable to perfumistas who have lots of perfume! I do find 100ml for less than $25 to be an ultra bargain.

I’m starting my day working from home and then my coworker is picking me up around noon so we can go visit another credit union’s headquarters. They’ve recently implemented a new system that we just purchased, so we’re going to get to see how they’re using it and what their experience is like. It should be a fun afternoon except for driving back into Seattle at rush hour.

I certainly consider them “good buys,” since I never use up anything so a lower price for a smaller size is always a good idea! But when I think bargains I am still thinking in terms of $ per ml.

I think of them as bargains! 100 ml for $25 is actually of less interest to me since I no longer decant and don’t want the 100 ml for myself.

Exactly! Or worse is when I buy larger amounts planning to decant, but the bottle has a terrible sprayer and I give up on decanting. Then I’m stuck with a lot of perfume I don’t need!

In other news, we adopted a dog this week from a rescue!! Maggie is a year old (we think), a Lhasa/terrier/poodle mix (we think), and a 1000% total sweetheart (we KNOW).

My heart is happier than it’s been in quite awhile. ❤️?❤️?❤️

I am in total opposite of the CP x 2

SOTD = Zoologist T-Rez layered with Tom Ford Lost Cherry

I don’t know why but this combo works like a charm. I enjoy each one separately but haven’t worn either in a while (whereas my Chanels have been getting a workout) so how better to stop the neglect? Wear both!

    Commuting Woes:
    – I sat next to a farter yesterday. Thank God it was cool enough for a scarf
    – I was originally facing another guy and just in time, rotated myself to face away as he coughed into his sleeve but towards my direction. Yuck!
    – what is it with people so full of themselves: “I woke up one morning and didn’t know how I got there or how my nose got broken …blah blah blah…and I said I didn’t want my nose to look like Brad Pitt’s (my thought bubble – yep, BP with a crooked nose is still 10x better looking, than you, just sayin’) blah blah blah and my doctor said he will fix it into position and it will still look ethnic.” Whatever. 12 minutes of this guy holding court… I had bad thoughts of him getting his nose broken again so he would stop talking.

I’m personally amazed that there are people who can NOT fart on the train – if you are someone with that much control over your farts, count yourself lucky and take a little pity on the rest of us! Believe me we’re not doing it to upset you.

T-Rex layered with Lost Cherry, wow, hard to imagine what that must smell like. T-Rex was so nuclear on me, it must totally blast out the cherry. I used one tiny spitz of my decant and was bowled over.

One of the benefits of colder weather is gloves and scarves on public transit. I don’t wear headphones but I can definitely see the benefit when you’re stuck listening to someone’s obnoxious conversation/cell phone call.

Trying to use up a decant of “vintage” Coty Muguet du Bois, so I spritzed that on this morning. “Vintage” is in quotes because, even though I got the decant from a reputable seller, the scent is certainly not the robust beauty that I loved and remembered my sister wearing decades ago. So, either my decant is not quite “vintage” enough for me, or the stuff just hasn’t aged well. Win some, lose some, I guess…

Laughing at myself… can’t even spell the name of it correctly! My sister’s Muguet DES Bois was PdT, judging by what I remember of the bottle, and definitely was stronger than what I’ve got now, which is most likely cologne. I adore LoTV, though, so I shouldn’t complain too much… 🙂

    1) It is a beautiful rainy day here, after a few weeks of dry and sunny weather. We need the rain and everything here is already looking lush and perked up! Light rain and flowers go well together!

    2) Am in Amelie Mae, a lovely fruity floral with a deep resinous rose heart. $40 USD and just lovely on everyone.

Loving the cheap perfume challenge! As Captain America says, “I could do this all day long!” 🙂 I do love a cheapie but a goodie….

Went with Beyonce Pulse. I paid $4.00 for a full bottle (after Christmas clearance at Walgreens). It’s fresh, fruity, and fun, but only lasts a couple of hours before it disappears completely. But for $4.00, you just keep spraying spraying spraying as needed….

What a great Tuesday photo, Robin.
Wearing CD vintage Eau Fraiche 100ml £12.50, in its ‘woven’ black and white box, nobody else was interested on eBay and I got an even more vintage one not long after. Citrus notes quite intact, it seems this resists very well the passage of time. It’s deceptively simple but nothing else smells quite like it. It has become a summer favorite (so it’s a little early in the season) along with my favorite Eau de Rochas.

Had a rare day off and sprayed Paco Rabanne La Nuit. I know it’s supposed to be super skanky, but to me it is just old school feminine. Although I can imagine the courtesans in Toulouse Lautrec’s paintings with their powdered faces and frilly petticoats smelling like this. Human and matronly.
On another topic, my local Aladdin’s cave has a bottle of John Galliano EDP, the one in the box with the painted face, not the postcard lookalike. Does anyone know if this is any good? As usual the caveat is that one has to buy blind!

I almost bought a full bottle of John Galliano EdP on Ebay a couple of month ago, but it was expensive for my perfume budget. It was discontinued long time ago. It is a beautiful powdery violet/iris perfume with a citrusy opening and incense in the drydown. It has great longevity and decent sillage. I hope to find a good deal at some point.

The box is damaged but for under $10, I’ll live with it. It’s a good sleep scent too! A soft bitter green mixed with sweet dusting powder. So pretty.

Going with the cheap thrills theme in Elizabeth Arden Green Tea. Seems pretty nice to me.

Used to be one of my favorites long ago before I even became a perfumista… You smell good.

It is so incredibly refreshing… you smell summery, and you’re right it’s a great deal, and can be reapplied with abandon. In summer I put it in the fridge.

I just sprayed a little more on when I got home from this afternoon’s errands. Sadly, it’s more like winter here again, but I’ll try to remember that tip about refrigerating it when our weather warms up again. That sounds nice and cooling. 🙂

I’ll be wearing Trayee today, a thrill, but very much not a cheap one, particularly when I consider the postage from Luckyscent! Neela Vermeire is one of the few lines where I like all the perfumes, but the price sets a very high bar for acquisition.

I like the NV perfumes I have tried as well, but out of my price range. I have yet to spend more than $150 on a single perfume! I’m waiting for the perfume that so floors me that I decide I can spend more- but haven’t found it yet.

Dune Homme in the morning, then sprayed some Reminiscence Vanille.
Worked on a new shirtdress today and cooked a persian beef Ragout with saffron and rhubarb and lots of herbs. This was really good, never Made this before. ?

Oh, please send dinner Tannina! I am happy we are having grilled steak and roast new potato, but pretty sure I would be even happier with Persian beef ragout.

Uber cheapie – Adam Levine for Her, obtained for about $6 at TJ Maxx. Mostly sandalwood and vanilla, lasts a decent amount of time. One of my best blind buys in terms of price/quality!

I was grading final papers until near the midnight deadline last night. This year for some reason they seemed to divide up as either mighty fine or just rotten. Submitted my grades online and had about ten e-mails from students this morning alleging there were mistakes, miscalculations, or other forms of mischief. Ugh.

To feel better I wore Zoologist Camel, since it’s just plain beautiful. I do have something good for the CP on Friday, if only I can find it.

People keep asking me what I’ll do now that I’m retired, and I’m tempted to respond, “clean my house for a year”—not to mention cleaning out and vacating my university office. This time of life offers up good lessons about letting go of things!

People ask me that retirement question all the time. My stock answer is “Anything I want” with a big smile.

I was rooting around in my decants/samples looking for stuff to take to a Chicago Basenotes meetup when I ran across some TF Fleur de Chine, so I put some on. Not cheap, but I don’t love it so I won’t need anymore when the decant is gone.

I made white chocolate and macadamia nut cookies from an internet recipe and they were the worst things I’ve made since I cooked Peg Bracken’s cranberry meatballs in the early ’80s. The cookies were gray and raw in the middle. I boosted the oven temp 25 degrees and baked them 8 minutes longer than the recipe said and they are edible now. I can’t imagine how the original poster thought they were good.

Maybe the person who posted the cookie recipee needs to have their oven calibrated?

FdC doesn’t work for me either. Overall Tom Ford is not my house. Although I do like Shanghai Lily.

I’ve seen references to “celebrity” perfumes here and there. Sarah Jessica Parker’s perfumes seem quite popular with several NST commenters.

There’s a reference to an Adam Levine perfume a few comments up. Could I have recommendations for cheap but nice celebrity perfumes? The sort I’m looking for are light fragrances, but not too “cotton candy” (candyfloss) and not bitter. Somewhere there must be a happy medium!

    Thanks in advance! 🙂

Personally, I’m a fan of Jennifer Lopez perfumes. The original Glo is a little to soapy for me, but most people really like it. I have Love and Glamour and Wild Glo which are fruity florals. I used to have Miami Glo, a good beachy vibe scent. Her perfume Still, is probably the lightest and is very pretty, a musky floral, if I remember correctly.

Oh, you read my mind! I’ve never smelled JLo Still, but have head that it is a light tea-ish scent that is very nice. Might even be a safe blind-buy?…

Put on about 10 sprays of Heure Exquise edt tonight. Picked up my bottle for $50 so it falls right on budget.

I even wore it to work this morning as a test; just a couple sprays on my legs. No one said anything, so I guess it fell under the radar. I will leave the bottle out as a reminder to spray myself each morning for the next while; it doesn’t really smell perfumey to me so maybe I can get away with it!

No cheap thrills today, but I have a few for the rest of the week.

Today was Bergamote 22. My first FB after falling down the rabbit hole, impulsive purchase, still one of my faves.

Now testing Zoologist Hummingbird and Moth. Interesting smells but not knocking Bat out of the leading position!
