Thursday scent of the day 4/25

Posted by Robin on 25 April 2019 210 Comments

Almost-Friday, National DNA Day, World Penguin Day and Ella Fitzgerald’s birthday. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm still on yesterday's pretty spring floral theme with Maison Francis Kurkdjian Pluriel Féminin.

Reminder: on 4/26 we're doing edition 4 of the picture challenge, part 1. Wear a perfume that matches the picture, which is Georgia O'Keeffe's My Shanty, from 1922. You can read more about the painting here and here. There is a short bit on her time at Lake George here. (This is part 1 because we are going to do another O'Keeffe later in the year.)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Chamade really is spring in a bottle! I love it too.

That being said, I had a coworker come near me once when I had it on, and said it reminded her of the smell of opening a new bag of diapers. LOL She was right on….I get that too! (I kinda like it!) :)

Hi all! Piment Brulant today. Found a bottle for very very inexpensive, and remembering how much I liked it so many years ago, I bought it. I may actually like it more than I remember! Between Paprika Brasil and this one, I clearly love smelling like a chili.

Jour d’Hermes again; it’s been my go-to for about a month. It’s just joyous, and that’s exactly what I’m looking for right now.

Spring has sprung, and I have some gorgeous scented narcissus blooming. I get to shove my nose into it everyday while it’s blooming, and it’s a treat. I didn’t really understand narcissus fragrance love until I started growing this.

Started the day in Iris 39, so very quiet on my skin, 4 sprays on each wrist, and still quiet, my 5 ml decant is going down fast! I like to be aware of my scent, and was expecting to love this one.
Iris 39 won’t be going on the FB list, so money saved at least.
Spritzed on no. 19 edt when it faded out after lunch.

      House twin!
When I was there a couple of years ago, I enjoyed sniffing at both Nordstrom and Neimans (Malle, MFK) on Michigan Ave. But I live in Madison, so anything beyond Sephora was exciting for me. Lol. Next trip I hope to hit Hermes and Le Labo. I do believe there is a perfume boutique in the Lincoln Park neighborhood…?

Merz Apothecary in Lincoln Park has upped its perfume offerings and is worth a trip. There’s also a Barney’s and a Saks downtown, plus Prada, Tom Ford, Bloomingdales, Dior, and Chanel.

 I am solidly in the ‘vintage’ camp also! I have a backup bottle from the 70’s and my current is 80’s, so I am set for quite a while.
I recently tried the newer formulation, and it didn’t have nearly the longevity the vintage has. What a bummer.

I thought most of D.S. & Durga’s older perfumes match the picture well. I chose to finish off my sample of their 2011 limited edition for Joya, Staghorn Sumac. It smells like dry grass and has a mineral, vegetal, slightly powdery feel. I originally wanted to wear their Freetrapper for the CP, but it’s a bit too heavy for work especially with the v-neck shirt I’m in today. However, I’m taking a vacation day tomorrow so I can wear anything I want!

Hermes Un Jardin Sur La Lagune from a Sephora sample. This is a pleasant enough floral, but to my nose it shares more dna with Twilly than it does with the rest of the Jardin line. I think it could have easily passed for a flanker. Must be something in the Nagel base.
I was surprised my Sephora had it so soon after it’s release. It has taken the spot on the shelf where Mediterranee used to be, which is still my favorite from the line.

I sniffed it at Sephora, too. Too me it was Eau de Merveilles Bleue, but with flowers. I love Bleue, but I don’t think I need more of it. Probably need to give it more of a chance. Mediterranee is my favorite, too.

Just made a dash out to the supermarket for bottles of water. Woke up this AM to the sound of a waterfall. Not a good sign in a drought-plagued part of the world. Wouldn’t you know it. A torrent of water was rushing down the road in front of our house, tearing up the tarmac and the sidewalk in front of our house down past our neighbor’s house–that’s about 40 feet of rushing water and bubbling up chunks of the street. Anyway. Now there are about 8 huge trucks parked up and down the road, jackhammers abound, and men in orange vests carrying clicking boxes are walking through our yard and plants. But the water has been shut off, so at least the stress of seeing all that precious H2O go to waste is gone. But of course we have no running water in the house either.

    Perfume?

    Oh. This is about perfume?

    Santal 33!

Yikes! They’ve been flushing the hydrants in my neighborhood this week. I’m sure there are good reasons for it, but it does bum me out to see all that water running into the storm drains, gone to waste. Here in the Great Lakes region, people tend to treat water like there’s an infinite supply.

I wish I could send you some of our water. It’s been a rainy spring in my area. Our ponds and lakes are high and I am noticing large pools of water in the low areas of people’s yards because the ground is saturated. I miss the sun.
Another four days of rain starting tomorrow….ugh.
I hope they repair the damage quickly on your street and your water is restored soon!

Gosh you guys, I had a grump-inducing morning. I decided to work from home in the morning so I could go for a swim as soon as it got warm enough to do so (California mornings are COLD, even though the afternoons have been getting up to 90 over the past couple days). So at 9:50, I went for a swim, and my swim cap broke! I tried swimming without it, but I have copious hair that likes to escape its braid, so my hair kept waterboarding me every time I came up for air. So then I tried backstroke for a bit, but with a watch on one wrist and de Quervain’s agony in the other, I was extremely hesitant near the edges of the pool, and so I’d swim properly for just about half the length of the pool before chickening out. The stress got to be too much and I gave up after about 20 minutes of swimming. All the time spent sunscreening and then showering for 20 crappy minutes of swimming!

And then I got home and showered, and just as I got out of the shower, the maintenance man came! So then I had to go out draped in a towel and squinting through glasses to talk to him. I was feeling so grumpy that I grabbed the little sample of Dilettante a kind NSTer sent me yesterday and dumped it all over myself. So I’m still terribly grumpy but at least I smell nice. Grump grump grump.

I guess I will head out to work now, then. Hopefully working from work will be less grump-making. (Hah!)

Oh yeah, all you people who suggested an oil cleanse before a foaming cleanse to get off the mineral sunscreen: totally works, thanks for the suggestion. Added benefit of the softest post-swim skin I’ve ever had.

Bummer! Glad the Dilettante helped. I just bought my first swim cap! “Waterboarded” is such a good way to describe the hair phenomena that has kept me from being a real swimmer my whole life. But the lakes here are still snowmelt temperature so I will wait a few more weeks to see how it works.

Oh gosh it’s the worst feeling, isn’t it? Being choked by your own dripping hair? I ordered a new one on Amazon the second I stepped back into my apartment, so hopefully I’ll have a new one by tomorrow night.

May I ask what brand you got? I got a Speedo one for extra hair, but this is the second cap that has torn (in ~2 y), and I’d love to get one that’s sturdier.

Snowmelt temps!!!! Sheesh. And I think our heated-to-70F pools are chilly.

(And thanks for the Dilettante! Just as delicious as I remember.)

Hmm, I’m not sure…it might be too cheap to be worth the hassle of trying to find a warranty and pursue it (~$12). But that’s a good reminder to look for such things!

Hi everyone, I’m about to teach my LAST CLASS ever of my 40+-year career! I’m happy! It’s a gloriously beautiful day outside and I’m so pleased to be able to be back on campus to finish the semester off. My SOTD is Koh-i-Noor. We had a big storm last night that cleared the air and it was nice and cool this morning, but now the sun is warming everything up. All the colours are technicolor-vivid in the clear air and there’s a light breeze. There are jasmine flowers blooming everywhere on the bushes that are often planted along fences and I can actually smell the scent wafting up to us here on the fifth story of our building! What a nice day.

Started the day in more than 8 spritzes of Eau de Merveilles Bleue, but could not smell it after some hours. So topped it up with SJP Covet. I like this so much, that i ordered a 100ml BUB for cheap….
Had some nice pizza dinner with the boyfriend in a small pizzeria near his workplace, now enjoying a bicicletta cocktail at home.
Maybe i will dare to wear Chypre Mousse tomorrow, because this lasts forever…

Plus a little Eau des Merveilles because I miss it. I smell pretty good, it’s kind of a lot tho, hahaha! :D Maybe I’ll make Thursdays my Hermes day, because I want to wear Jour d’Hermes more too.

Yay for DNA Day! Strange that there is a day for that, but I guess DNA deserves a shout out. I’ve pondered doing a DNA spit test for fun. But I wonder about privacy and finding out things I’d rather not know. Genie in the bottle and all that. The Double Helix is one of my favorite non-fiction books.

I did mine, and then my whole extended family followed suit.

It’s great fun finding family connections and confirming my family’s heritage, plus has been very helpful in figuring out health things, BUT, I agree it’s a huge privacy concern and while I don’t care so much for myself, I do sometimes wonder if I should not have had my son done. Too late now.

Maybe we should all spray on some Rossy de Palma and go take care of her for you.

I’ll join the Rossy Brigade! Can we get uniforms made?
But sorry you’re dealing with that and I’m sure it’s irritating. I hope you’re not taking her personally…

I know how she is, so I don’t take it personally.

Thank you. I think she’s waiting for me to ask her about why she’s doing this. I’m not going to though.

    SOTD = Dior Homme

Perfect office scent, leans masculine but doesn’t make a woman wearing it smell like a man. It shares DNA with Chanel No. 19 EDP, Carner Barcelona D600!and Annick Goutal Heure Exquise!

Today was Take Your Kids to Work Day. I volunteered at the beginning so I can observe how things are and provide suggestions for next year.

VIB Rouge 20% off starts tomorrow. I’ll be putting stuff in my cart tonight, get up at midnight and hit buy. I learned my lesson the last time where many of the items I wanted were out of stock!
