Thursday scent of the day 4/18

Posted by Robin on 18 April 2019 262 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday! It's also World Heritage Day / International Day for Monuments and Sites. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Carthusia Mediterraneo. At the moment I can't remember if it's my second or third bottle.

Reminder: 4/19 will be Twice as Nice Friday...wear a fragrance that you've purchased more than once (a scent that you used up and bought again, or a scent for which you've already got a backup bottle). If you don't have such a fragrance, wear the scent you'd be most likely to rebuy. Suggested by thegoddessrena.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Is this one you have a back up bottle of? I don’t think I ever saw it in these here parts, but I’m sure you smell fantastic!

DKNY Men. Since 2001 (it’s the fragrance that has been with me the longest) I’ve been through 4x50ml and 4x, no wait – THUNK – as of this morning make that 5x100ml bottles. Also 2x75ml deodorant sticks, 1x150ml deodorant spray and 2x100ml shower gels. Somewhere along the way I’ve managed to acquire 3 back up bottles (though technically that’s now 2)…

Love, love Mediterraneo. Have you found ways to make it last, Robin?

I’m in another of your favorites: Theorema for a cool rainy day in Seattle. I have a partial bottle and a mini.

Really I think the only bottles I used up and rebought several times were when I had a signature scent: 70s: Je Reviens, 90s: Tresor but only parfum format.

Nope, it doesn’t last! That helps me go through more bottles ;-)

I agree with Patricia de Nicolai…you can’t make a citrus last without making it “squat”. So if you want light and sparkling, you’ll have to reapply.

I am in Lubin Kismet again. I think others can smell this on me better than I can smell it on myself. I would prefer the opposite.

Last night I got to smell some fabulous vintage perfumes at the library’s smell and tell – I sniffed Joy, Je Reviens, Rochas Femme, among others but the one that really stood out was Caron’s Bellodgia. Wow what a carnation! I have been googling carnation perfumes since last night because I also really enjoyed Oeillat Bengale so this may be a note that I would like more generally. Any suggestions from this community?

In my Google stalking of the dc/ed Bellodgia I came across the site scent matchers – they recreate discontinued scents. Has anyone here tried them?

I am slightly embarrassed to admit, I tried them to see if they could generate a reasonable facsimile of Malmaison, my favorite carnation scent. They had it listed on their site as something they had made before, so I selected from their list, and sent them money. I recieved something that had a 2 minute blast of clove, followed by hours of a stinky bitter musk. No resemblance to anything remotely carnation, or even floral. I didn’t have the heart to fight with them about it, I just threw the bottle away. YMMV, of course, they have some rave reviews, but it didn’t work for me….

Bellodgia is so pretty. I wore it yesterday, and enjoyed it so much.

Three years ago, my first stop on our Paris trip (my husband called it my PPT -Paris Perfume Tour), was a Caron boutique. I bought Piu Bellodgia, which is very pretty, and a sample of Bellodgia was included in my bag. I regret not going back the next day and purchasing a bottle of Bellodgia.

I’ll add Etro Dianthus which is a soft carnation and Oriza Legrand has 2 carnations: Royal Oeillet and Oeilet Louis XV, I think 2 commenters here were sampling the OL perfumes not long ago, perhaps they’ll chime in.

    Casmir.
This perfume has had a permanent place in my ever growing collection since it’s release in 1992. That was the same year I graduated from college and was working my first “real” job. I smelled it on a magazine test strip and was instantly in love. I rushed out to Dayton’s (rip) department store and bought a bottle. It’s still in my top two of all time even though I don’t wear it nearly as often as I used to.
Thanks to a Very generous NSTer, I have a BUB that should last me a lifetime.?

Yes, Dayton’s, Hudson’s and Target were all part of the same parent company. Eventually the store became Marshall Fields (another rip☹️) and then Macy’s. I feel like all those great department stores are going to be obsolete some day which makes me sad.

Wearing Like This today. Have you ever heard of a cup of tea being described as a hug in a cup? I think of Like This as being a hug in a perfume bottle. I’m halfway through my bottle. If perfume dollars were unlimited, I would buy a second. As it is, I’m on the fence.

I am wearing Liz Claiborne today. I went through three bottles of this in the 80s and 90s. This was the scent I wore when my husband and I were dating, way back when. We met in December 1986. I saw a bottle of this online for $25, so I ordered it. It feels like going back in time when I wear it. The style of the bottle has changed. It is a glass triangle, not a plastic triangle case surrounding the glass, like the bottles I previously had.

It is snowing today. SNOWING. Just when I thought spring was finally here.

Trying something new to me as a pick me up: Smell Bent’s Chile Vanilli. Vanilla-cinnamon patch, gives off a gourmand chai accord sometimes, and other times the patchouli is stronger. This is one they included in my last sample order as an extra, not one I chose, but I’m glad they did. It’s making me smile this morning.

I went with Rose de Siwa today. I went through several decants, including the one the fell and broke on the stairs, before buying a bottle. Not sure if that really counts but it’s probably more realistic in perfumista world. ?

My aunt, father’s sister, passed away in CT on Monday night. She was my father’s only sibling. Had fallen a few weeks ago and then declined suddenly. Very sad. ? I can’t help but wonder if my father and then mother passing quickly in the last few months affected her health maybe too. She and my uncle have no children but my sister has been doing a great job helping him.

Vanilla does a great job getting me through tough days and I am in Boucheron Vanille de Zanzibar today.

My parents are going to California for a week starting May 8th and I am going to dog sit. I finished what I needed to do but powering through the last of my anxiety. Off to window shop at Sephora.

Hello fragrant friends! I am back from vacation in Baja and slowly picking up the threads of my normal life. Sniff, sad to be Not On Vacation.

I went thru a whole (small) bottle of Carthusia Mediterraneo body lotion while on vacation. Nice but the scent disappears in a flash. For perfume I wore Atelier California Clementine and Pacific Lime; Olfactive Studios Still Life in Rio; VCA Neroli Amara and California Reverie; AdP Fico di Amalfi. Nobody on our ship cared but I am sure you all are burning with curiosity :)

Currently sampling Demeter Kitten Fur (thanks Koyel)! Um, this is a strange one. Vanilla, musk, and dry cleaning fluid; does not smell like any kitten I’ve ever sniffed. But I’m glad I got to satisfy the itch to sniff it.

You smelled great on the ship! Those are perfect oceanside choices.

That’s pretty much how I felt about Kitten Fur–thrilled to have been able to sniff it, sure it wasn’t for me. But it made my kittens behave oddly, which I enjoyed. (They kept getting really confused by the scent and stopping stock-still.)

I have a question for those of you who have gone through more than one bottle of a perfume. What’s your typical dosage? Three sprays, four, more? Reapply often during the day? Very curious to know more as I’m content with one or two sprays of most scents and hardly make a dent in a bottle.

Participating in the CP today with First parfum. I got the EdT version unsniffed as part of an NST freebie and fell in love with what, to me, was pure spring narcissus. Then I discovered that First is relatively inexpensive and soon had EdP and parfum as well. I find the heavier concentrations to be more jasmine-heavy, which is pretty but not what I loved about the EdT, so I swapped away the EdP and am now down to a more manageable amount of EdT and a parfum mini that I keep in my desk for days like today.

SOTD, CP, Diorissimo, possibly my most re-purchased perfume. I believe the first time I bought a bottle of this was in the late ’70’s – my sister and I made a trip from Laramie Wyoming where we were both attending the University of Wyoming, to Denver, where. after spending half the day in The Tattered Cover bookstore, we hit some of the high end shopping malls – Lord and Taylor, and Needless Markup, as we fondly called Nieman Marcus. I got Diorissimo, she bought some Arpege. I have had a bottle of this almost constantly ever since. :-)

I love this story, Diorissimo and vintage Arpege. Diorissimo is timeless. You smell lovely!

I own both of these but they are more recent discoveries.

The Tattered Cover is still around in Denver, but moved several years ago. It’s also now a small chain of stores! Fond memories of their Cherry Creek location: I remember they were one of the few places that wouldn’t give a college student any grief for paying with a personal check.

Felanilla today, after ordering a decant i had to have a BUB. It was very warm today, nearly early summer temperatures. Poor boyfriend had a biopsy done today and is recovering now. Hope the results will not be too bad.
Today i cut my Appleton dress and started with the sewing. Until now it looks okay, but i only sewed the smaller parts today.
SOTE is some vintage Chanel No 5 from Ebay. I wore this in my late twenties, but it didn’t feel like me at all at this age. I can wear this now in my fifties, but still is not really me.

Fragonard “Désert” today, another ‘clink’. It didn’t really work on me any time I tried it. But, just as I thought I would have to damn it utterly, I reapplied before leaving the house and as I walked down the street I caught a whiff of it being really lovely. Five minutes later I was in the fishing harbour with the smell of fried fish and the Fragonard didn’t survive that. But for that one moment of beauty, I will remember it more fondly than I otherwise might have.

I should say, I feel bad that I have inadvertently spent the week doing the exact opposite of the CP: finishing off perfumes I bought once and hope never to see again. I’ll get with the programme tomorrow. :^D

SOTD YR Voile d’Ambre, layered with BBW Amber & Argan body butter, it’s very cozy!

This week I visited a Boscov’s department store several hours from my house – it was like going back in time, I loved it. chocolate counter department, complementary gift wrapping, a bustling beauty department – my favorite scents were Giorgio, which I found surprisingly green and Ysatis. I thought Amarige was a little juicy for my taste, but still very nice.

We had a Read’s Department store where I live when I was growing up – hair salon, luncheonette, the works. That store was where I began to acquire my perfume lurve, as I would hang out at the counter while my mom went about buying her Clinique stuff. I drove the sales ladies a little nuts asking to sniff this or that. #memories #nostalgia

Started out with Baghari from a very generous NSTer at a freebie meet, layered Eau Premiere over the remnants when I got home and just dabbled on some Rose Otto for good measure. Smells great!
I’m craving a big tropical fruity fragrance right now, preferably a cheap thrill as fruit usually isn’t high on my list of perfume preferences. Something that makes smells like it should be in a glass with a little umbrella at sunset on a palm fringed beach. Any ideas?

Trying a sample — Clean Hesperides Grapefruit. (Thank you, rayleighblue!) And I ordered a small bottle of it from Sephora online. I tried Berdoues Peng-Lai the other day (thanks again!) and liked that quite a lot, though I could hear the folks coughing a little from their room. I’ll put their coughing down to spring allergies.

Surrender to Chance had a 22% off sale the other day. I forget what the occasion was, but I got a bunch of samples. I’ll keep you all posted as I get the chance to try various samples. (Though now I can go outside to try them. lol)
