Tuesday scent of the day 3/5

Posted by Robin on 5 March 2019 235 Comments

It's Tuesday and it's Procrastination Week. There are 15 days left of winter. What fragrance are you wearing?

I went with The Different Company Le 15. Tea at the moment is a Kenilworth Estate Pekoe, from Sri Lanka via Upton.

Reminder: on 3/8, we'll celebrate International Women's Day. Wear a fragrance that honors the holiday in whatever way you like.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Suffragette City tea set was a collaboration between artist Gillian Wearing, Bella Freud, the mayor of London and Plinth, to mark the 2018 centenary of women's suffrage in the UK. The individual pieces can be found at several places in the UK, including Sketch and Wolf & Badger. (The teapot is £90. The sugar bowl, which says What Do Women Want, is £35.) There is also a Tee and a Tote Bag.

I think so, too, although I don’t have any vintage Shalimar on hand to do a direct comparison.

L’Envol de Cartier EDT by Mathilde Laurent. Now don’t lynch me, but I prefer the EDT version of this. I struggled a bit with the EDP but the moment I smelled the added brightness and transparency of the EDT, it was love. And I managed to snag a discounted gift set from TK Maxx with a shower gel which is lovely as well.

Playing along today in En Passant by Olivia Giacobetti. It disappoints me, a little. The lilac is fresh and beautiful, and I enjoy the watery cucumber, but that only lasts for about thirty minutes before it just smells like old cucumbers. I search in vain for the wheat note. Maybe I need to spray more.

Lilac as a dominant note on a perfume isn’t used often enough and I wonder why. I love En Passant and you smell fabulous anyway.

In the daily lemming dept, discovered a new-to-me chocolate bar
(while virtuously purchasing my current addiction, the pricey honeycrisp apples): Lindt les Grandes. It’s dark chocolate with hazelnuts and caramelized hazelnut pieces. It was a struggle to stop at the 2-pc serving size.
L’eau d’Hiver today, and see on the Barneys site that it’s now available in a 30 ml size. Hmmm.

Honey crisp are my favorite too. I have one every morning with some almond butter. ? They are up to $3.99 at my store, so yeah, a pricey addiction that’s for sure.

It’s funny that someone on a perfume website would refer to a honeycrisp addiction as pricey :) How many of those can you get for the price of a scent that’s even perfumath free??

I was at the Lindt store recently and noticed those Les Grand bars – they look amazing. Robin… I’m in Toronto and we get the Sesame bars here – they’re good. Let me know – I can send you some! I noticed on a trip to Savannah a few years ago that they had both Lychee and Pomegranate which aren’t available here. Different flavours for different markets. My favourites are the Sea Salt and the Crunchy Cacao ?

Crabby today. I spent a hour yesterday cleaning and organizing a spot in my bedroom and found my sample/travel set of La Maison de la Vanille. All in various stages of evaporation. That shouldn’t happen and I think that it’s the spray and bottle wasn’t really thought out. It’s Fat Tuesday and that means paczis and I am dreading work today. I am wearing Chanel no 19 to get me through.

That is a pretty excellent tea set!

Today’s female-created perfume is DSH December. According to the notes, I should be absolutely crazy for this one! Instead, I merely find it pleasant. It smells like Venenum Lite on my skin. I applied it liberally, but maybe tomorrow I need to simply dump the remaining contents of the vial on my skin and see if that helps.

Mayhem the Cat keeps losing weight, and we’re now more sure than ever that he won’t make it to the summer. Meanwhile, my father is on day 8 of chemo. 2019, I have not liked you one bit so far.

I want the tea set! And I really want the sugar bowl, even though I don’t even use a sugar bowl.

Unfortunately, set is not dishwasher safe, which I guess adds an extra layer of irony — for no extra charge! — to the whole thing.

So sorry about your kitty! How is your dad holding up, is the chemo making him ill?

Haha, nice touch on the irony :) That sugar bowl is quite desirable.

Yes, the chemo is making him ill, but not as much as we had feared. He gets it in sets of three days, and the nausea and misery sounds like it’s offset from the chemo days by about two days (so, the nausea starts on day 3 of chemo and continues for 2 – 4 days afterwards). I just hope it’s working and that all this misery is worth it. Thanks for asking!

I hope his chemo works! It’s been odd to see the different treatment plans for my father and for my cat. It’s unclear to me how much of the difference is because of the type of cancer and how much is because one is a human and one is a cat (and then, is it because we try harder to keep humans alive than we do cats? or is it because they’re different species with different responses?)

SOTD = Nirvana Bourbon. Not sure how involved the Olsen twins are with the fragrance line specifically, but their massive fashion empire qualifies them as worth an attagirl for women’s history month.

Speaking of which, I watched my first Lao film last night, by Mattie Do. She has the distinction of being the country’s first female filmmaker AND first horror filmmaker. It’s called Dearest Sister, and it’s about a young woman from a poor village who moves to the capital to help care for her cousin, who is going blind and having premonitions/communicating with the dead. There was a lot more psychological and class tension than actual ghosties. I wish it were scarier, but it was interesting as a product of a culture I’m not very familiar with.

I learned that ghosts giving you winning lotto numbers is a theme in Southeast Asian folklore. Booking my Lao haunted house tour now.

I still haven’t tried the newer ones, French Grey and Amethyst, but I do like the rest of the line. White is a little boring to me but I love the rest. Cheap (by perfume standards), pretty, and nice bottles, the deadly combo.

White is my least favorite also. I do like Amethyst, but French Grey is just above White for me. But if you like Bourbon, Black, etc definitely try Amethyst! And you’re right, the bottles and pricing are great.

Wearing Iris Ganache to help fortify me through a day of discomfort. 10 days ago, I fell on the ice and fractured both bones in my wrist. They were unable to get the bones to set, so I ended up having reconstructive surgery. 2 plates and 11 screws later, I am very grateful for pain medication.
The positive side is that I can wear any scent I want, and the greyhounds love having me home.

On the bright side, your town or city probably doesn’t have: (1) tens of thousands of auto break-ins and burglaries every year, (2) discarded hypodermic needles scattered all over town, (3) neighborhood refuse piles that morphed from encampments, or (4) insanity-level pricing for everything.

Feeling melancholy today. So many people lost their lives in Alabama from tornadoes Sunday. The county that was hit was the county my university is in and also I have a lot of family there. Just very sad. Also sad about Luke Perry’s passing, which I realize is ridiculous, but he was my first major crush and just seems like a part of my adolescence is gone.

It’s been a sad couple of days. And it isn’t ridiculous to feel sad about Luke Perry’s death I don’t think. Dylan McKay was a formative crush for many and Perry seemed like a genuinely good guy. 52 is too young.

I was not wow’ed. I dont think its bad, but maybe that was because I had Nomade on my other arm….(it was not good on me) haha.

It feels more like a mediocre episode from the Eau series than a real Jardin. If that makes any sense….

House twin with Robin in my old standby Jasmin de Nuit by Celine Ellena. It’s so good in this latest arctic blast we’re having this week. The jasmine is reminding me of the tropics, but the spices warm it up and make it appropriate for the weather.

So Nomade leans a little much towards fruity laundry detergent on my skin. I love that bottle so much, but I cant see myself wearing this.

Haha my husband just smelled my arm and his face turned into something like this ? and he called it ‘air refreshner mixed with laundry softener’.

Un Jardin sur la Lagune on first sniff almost felt like its shares more DNA with the Eau series than with the Jardin series.
Its not love at first sniff for me, but it is not bad either, and I think I need to give it another try when its warmer. I smell hints of magnolia and lily, quite fresh and clean, but after an hour while it gets that slightly murky water vibe Eau Gentiane blanche and eau de Narcisse bleu have. If that makes any sense.

Kiss Me Intense again today to celebrate Patricia Nicolai. Her Le Temps d’une Fête was my first niche back in the mid 90s, so I have a fondness for the house.

Sigh… It never ends with pets. We are down to two cats now, and I took our boy Blacky in today for first vet visit in quite a long time. We’ve had an instinct he has a GI issue. Only thing confirmed is some tooth problem, but all sorts of blood work, x-rays, etc. performed. Vet was somewhat concerned he was way too mellow for a cat that generally isn’t around strangers. I’m not…he’s always been a pretty placid guy.

But the upshot is…I have now spent a nice vacation in Blackyland. And I’m sure we’ll be spending more vacation time (and money) there soon….

Oh, dear, a vet visit is something I dread most of the time due to the expense. One of my cats has stomatitis and is going to need to have all of his teeth removed at some point. Since it’s easily $1000+, I have to make the choice between fixing his teeth or my own.

It will for sure, sooner or later. My cat Pixel had the same issue and was much happier when that tooth was finally gone. It was not cheap to take care of, though.

Been there done that with most of our fur babies. But they’re like children/family. It’s hard not to.

Hello all. My SOTD is Ineke Hothouse Flower. I found it by accident this morning–an unopened sample in a cute small box. I’ve got no memory of getting it or when, but I didn’t have any other scent planned and it seemed to fit the CP so I sprayed ahead. It’s nice, not really what I expected given the name. I smell fig and green notes, but the flower appears to be missing. I think I expected some powerhouse like a tuberose or (God forbid) a star lily. It’s pleasant but not earth-shaking. I’d choose Elephant for more green smell and/or a good fig perfume like L’Artisan’s for more fig, rather than buying this one.

Calypso, was it you who recently posted about really liking Areej le Dore Flux de Fleur? If so, please email me! I have a decant of it, and it just doesn’t do it for me. I’m at gmail at the same name as my NST user name.

Maria Candida Gentile’s Cinabre – so nice on this frigid day! ?
Will have to do some research on my stash so I can be sure to honor all the lovely female perfumers represented there this week.

Needed something a bit more quiet today, so went with Lyn Harris L´Air de Rien, which is a contemplative and cosy scent for me.
Continued the cosy skin scent theme with a new sample of Musk Tonkin, which was in the mail today. I like this a lot, but have to sample further. Compared to Peau de Bete the price is much more reasonable???

I love L’Air de Rien. I also liked Musc Tonkin better than Peau de Bête. Money saved. :-)

It’s an incense perfume, but doesn’t really smell like one of those sage smudge bundles. Puppy and I had a glorious walk, then later in the evening it poured rain. Timing is everything!

I am in Osmanthe Yunnan again layered over Nuxe bodycream.

Does anyone have layering recommendations for this one? Its so fleeting!

At Hermès, a SA recommended layering Osmanthe Yunnan with Santal Massoia.

I heard someone recommend putting the perfume on first, then layering cream on top.

      Good luck!

    Hi Everybody!
Neeed HEEEELP!!!! I am desperate enough to ask if someone could sell me a decant (5-10ml) of Teo Cabanel Barkhane. I have searched Ebay, STC and The Perfumed Court- NOTHING!!! I have finally found my perfect amber and unfortunatelly can’t afford a FB atm. Please e-mail me at lasto4ka5 in the land of gee male.

SOTD- M Micaleff Ylang, lovely, but way too sweet for me, I will use my decant and take it off my want list.
I was planning to wear my spring scents for this week CP ( International Day will always be associated with spring and tulips for me), but it is so cold and windy in MI, that I’ve decided to stick with big guns, the bigger, the better!
This week choices are Chanel Coco, TF Sahara Noir and Clinique Aromatics Elixir.

Inspired by my younger sister, who seems to be coming out of over a year of difficulties with grace. Wearing Eau Rose by Diptyque. She was sure she loved the line but hated rose until she met this scent; now it’s a favorite of hers.

Hello everyone! This is my favorite blog, I used to post and read here every day years ago but somehow I lost touch and my old account password…. I am back again on here and very happy to be back!!
I just ordered a fragrance set as a treat for myself. It was a blind buy… but my favorite brand! Does anyone like Acqua di Parma? I love Fico di Amalfi (my staple since 11-12 years ago), Mirto di Panarea and now unfortunately discontinued Iris Nobile. But now I am so excited for my bottle and body cream of Arancia di Capri to arrive in the mail!!!!! I never tried it before but I love orange and orange blossom, orange anything scents!! Can’t wait to smell it finally!

Sweet! I love Fico too it is so breezy, fresh, a bit fruity and just deliscious! Well fruity is not that bad for Fico because… figs are fruits after all, right?

Posting late today! I guess I am in tune with Procrastination Week. ? Today was a much better day than yesterday was. Both chocolate and perfume were indulged in and enjoyed.

SOTD = Oriza L. Legrand Relique d’Amour EdP, from the sample stash. A beautiful, calming incense scent for me.

    SOTD = Papillon Angelique

Woman perfumer and perfume business owner Liz Moore’s. like this the best out of the original 3 – orris butter and mimosa are what I smell.

Embarrassing moment and I admit to being judgey on this – towards the end of a missionary’s message yesterday, someone started to snore. I was nowhere near the person but if I was seated next to him. I may have gently nudged him.

On the way home today, someone other than me smelled good. I finally spoke to the guys sitting next to me and one of them said he was wearing Penhaligon’s but could not remember the name. It smelled like a tobacco non-gourmand vanilla pudding. I am dying to know what it was!
