Friday, and Opposite Day and Irish Coffee Day. Birthdays today: Robert Burns, Virginia Woolf, Antônio Carlos Jobim, Etta James. Our community project for today: wear one of your favorite fragrances of this winter (unless it's summer where you are, in which case wear one of your favorite scents of this summer).
What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.
I'm in Aftelier Candide, which has made this bad winter a little more bearable.
Reminder: on 2/1, we'll celebrate Cherry Month...wear a fragrance with a cherry or cherry blossom note.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Ah, good morning. It is finally truly cold here in Minneapolis, so a good day for this project, as the weather sometimes requires me to put my entire face inside my coat, where it smells FANTASTIC and so cozy. I am wearing my true love of this winter, Dawn Spencer Hurwitz Chinchilla. I have almost a romantic crush on it – I found my heart doing a little flutter when I went to type it in to the Basenotes tracker this morning! Looking forward to seeing what everybody else’s current favorites are.
Oh and I wanted to say, I won’t be around this weekend but I hope everybody enjoys Freebiemeet: Marie Kondo Edition!
Freebiemeet this weekend! Yay
Your posts spark joy in me.
Lol. Cute.?
I’ve given Chinchilla a lot of love this winter too. Stay warm!
“…as the weather sometimes requires me to put my entire face inside my coat…”
I FEEL this. It’s so cold out today (windchill of -14F) that my skin hurt after my walk to work this morning.
LOVE Chinchilla – you smell great!
Paramela
You give new meaning to Groundhog Day!
BTW, my iPhone spellcheck includes CM8 on its word list of correctly spelled words.
You can always count on me for consistency LOL ? ?
And that’s hysterical about my name ??
Lol on both comments. But it’s true: my phone’s spell check by now knows some perfumes, brands or nicknames better than I 🙂
🙂 🙂 🙂
The fume recognition function is called smellcheck ?
Ha!?
?
I am wearing a lavish amount of Yves Rocher Orange et Chocolat, a limited-edition EDT they did a few Christmases ago. It’s heaven, a stripped-down Fendi Theorema that perfectly suits any cold day. I started wearing it late fall and I’ll be in it at least a couple of times a week until it warms the hell up.
I am also using Lush Whipstick lip balm, which is the same thing only, you know, lip balm — it has actual dark chocolate in it! For extra chocolate-orange goodness! No idea why Lush hasn’t made it into an EDT: they’d sell it by the millions.
Both of these sound fantastic! I especially want that lip balm.
Why don’t I own Whipstick???
Yeah, why don’t you? It’s cheap and quite wonderful. Next time you wander past a Lush, you really should. Also check out their Rose Lollipop, which has a waxy texture in the tin but melts into an oil on your lips: it feels reeeeeeeally good.
I wish there was a Lush more in my daily path 🙂
But hopefully they will have some next time I’m there.
Lip balm with chocolate? Oh my goodness…
Hurraw also makes an excellent organic chocolate lip balm. I also recommend their cardamom, rose and almond lip balm.
I had Whipstick years ago and forgot all about it. Now I want another one . . .
Yes, yes, yes! I love Orange et Chocolat, glad I have a backup bottle.
I emailed Yves Rocher twice last December, begging for them to put their Christmas fragrances on the US website. All I get is a “We’re sorry not available in US” reply….
I’ll keep emailing every year…. 🙂
Vintage Yvresse today. Or any day. I could honestly wear it daily it I had a lifetime supply.
Happy Friday everyone!
Vintage Yvresse is glorious, isn’t it? A true oakmossy chypre, but so modern.
Wearing L’Ambre des Merveilles. This is about the only Hermès I can think of off the top of my head with good staying power.
Agreed!
You are lucky. It doesn’t lasts on me more than 2-3 hours 🙁
Unless I do at least 20 + sprays of any of them I can’t smell them on me
Agreed! I always have to respray, which is fine with me.
I seem to fare better in the lasting department but I see what you mean about the eaux de cologne, however if you haven’t sampled Eau de Neroli yet, give it a try, this one lasts on me, discreet but present and I love the saffron note in it, very noticeable.
Unfortunately same with those and also the Hermessence…bit keep in mind that my skin eats scent.
Seriously, Bel Ami? 24, Faubourg? Original Caleche? Equipage?
(I am not arguing, maybe none of those last on you either, I’m just surprised. Jean Claude Ellena did not do powerhouse fragrances as a rule, but there are so many from before him.)
Yeah, Bel Ami just keeps on going, and so does Rocabar. And Amazone, and Parfum d’Hermes…. I don’t know what the modern iterations of those two are like but the vintage lasts for.ev.er., especially in parfum.
I mean, the colognes and the Hermessences are gauzy things with almost no staying power, sure, but the pillar fragrances are really built.
Surprised like Robin and Pyramus. All these listed have good staying power, and I will add Voyage Parfum, actually by JC Ellena, projection moderate but it has very good longevity on me, all day long in summer.
Ah, the mysteries of skin chemistry…
Hello Pyramus, so nice to see Parfum d’Hermes listed, underated imo yes, long lasting, it was discontinued, replaced by Rouge d’Hermes which got discontinued too after some time. Never smelled Rouge but I am a fan of Parfum d’H and have a bottle.
Parfum d’Hermes was reformulated as Rouge, which I thought was inferior; then Rouge was discontinued; then PdH was reformulated and relaunched, and then at some point was discontinued again while Rouge was reformulated and relaunched. Rouge is still available and it’s not very good, unsurprisingly, especially when compared to the original, which is a work of genius and one of the great perfumes of the last half-century, period.
I have a half-ounce of the vintage PdH parfum, and I dole it out in tiny amounts so it will last me for the rest of my life (I hope).
Thank you very much, you followed closely what happened about the whole debacle, I have what I think is a vintage edt in a bottle that looks like an elongated clock and more edt in a metal canister with snake skin effect (very pretty) now, with our conversation I think I should try them side by side.
Perhaps just perhaps a sweeping statement – Caleche (maybe not original) and Equipage haven’t lasted too long on on me, but haven’t tried ALL the old hits. Will be near a department store this afternoon so perhaps I will try a couple of others.
Oh, and really didn’t mean to argue! It’s a fair enough assertion about the modern line. I don’t mind but I know many people do.
I’m in my newest and bestest favorite, Memo Italian Leather. The travel spray arrived yesterday and oh my, so much better sprayed than dabbed. Dabbed was pretty danged fantastic, but I’m in a heavenly cloud this morning and loving every single second of it. Happy Friday all!
You smell terrific! I was really taken with Italian Leather when I sampled it. I think it’s my favourite from the MEMO line.
Mine too. I love the tomato leaf note in the top, and the lightly spiced leather in the drydown is just lovely.
Right? Such an interesting, not-really-gourmand progression.
You smell good! Congratulations on your new bottle 😉
SOTD is Serge Lutens Chene. As many SL scents, it’s really cozy and a good choice for winter.
what are the obvious notes? I have not smelled this one.
Wood, but dessert wood — polished oak sweetened with immortelle and honey. I don’t own a bottle (for some reason) but I’ve had samples and it’s really lovely.
I mostly agree with pyramus, also I do not get immortelle from it. Dry wood slightly sweetened with honey. A hint of spiciness.
Love, love, love Chene! Opted for my (somewhat cheaper & sweeter) Givenchy Organza Indecence.
As far as I remember, this one is indeed woody but with a lot of vanilla. Another good choice for winter. 🙂
I’m wearing Kismet today!?
Such a great name for a perfume! Hope the day lives up to it.
It didn’t, but that’s life?
Have you tried Kismet? It’s so lovely!
Wearing Milk of Flowers, a favorite for all seasons
I’m in Avignon with a touch of Rose of No Man’s Land.
That combo sounds good!
oohh…I think I would like that. You smell terrific!
Today I’m wearing Hermes Vetiver Tonka
nice, mild but nice
Perfect
You reminded me of this perfume: I haven’t worn it for ages! I should dig out my travel spray and wear it.
Wearing an old favourite, one that I haven´t worn in ages, Donna Karan Black Cashmere. Same perfumer as Œillet Bengale, which is a new favourite.
It´s as miserable as winter in the Netherlands can be, cold, gray and rainy with roads that are still slippery from Tuesday´s snow. However, there is no urgent need for me to go out, and we still need the water, plus this is January in the Lowlands, not exacly likely to be sunny.
Stay warm!
You smell fantastic! Stay warm and cozy inside!
You smell wonderful, BC is in my top 5 all time favorites 🙂 bundle up!
A good month for staying inside and reading books. Keep warm. Not long until the first bulbs pop up. I used to love seeing the crocuses when I lived in Germany
I’m also in the Netherlands. In my neighborhood, there was still (our light) snow and ice even in the streets! I tried venturing outdoors with my new puppy yesterday. It was his first day of freedom after a two-week house arrest with a puppy virus and a sprained paw. It was so slippery (for him as well as for me) that I was afraid we’d end up on the ground. Today the rain melted most of the rest of the snow, but it’s only made it icier and it is so grey and… yucky! So I stayed in all day today and just let him out in his puppy run.
Oh, and today I wore Bois des Iles, which, to be true, I wear all year-round.
I have a free morning (sans bebes)
I got time to dress up, in plaid pants, a cashmere sweater and manolo flats with a cute bow I picked up for a song and a dance at a second hand shop.
Chanel Lippy and Amore pacific cushion, neutrogena foundation. Pearl necklace. Yes , I have gone all out..
Lili Bermuda Frangipani
Feeling, looking and smelling good!
Your outfit sounds great! Enjoy your time alone.
Fancy! Enjoy your me-time!
Fancy! Enjoy the free time!
You look and smell great!
Thanks everyone
You must look smashing, enjoy the time to yourself.
WOW–Fantastic! I am a big fan of Lili Bermuda Jasmine. I bought it at the shop in Bermuda and still have fond memories of tea in the back garden and sniffing everything before I bought anything!!
Wow.. we have similar tastes. Jasmine was my second favorite
Did you try anything else that you loved?
Oh, I remember how wonderful it was to dress in real clothes after far-too-long in sweats, taking care of a small child. You look and smell fantastic!
I’m wearing Bois Farine. Not only is it a winter favorite, but my family gave me the bottle last Christmas and every time I spray it, it makes me happy to think of them.
Have a wonderful day! Stay warm and balanced.
Aww, nice! I love scent associations!
How wonderful, enjoy, you smell super good.
You smell nice and what a wonderful scent association!
Happy feels for that perfume story!
SotM = Jardins de Bagatelle
JdB warms my heart on this cold morning, it’s so pretty. It makes me smile. 😀 I’m a floral girl at heart.
I’ve been in love with my Guerlains lately, wearing Apres L’Ondee just because, lots of Cologne du 68, Eau de Guerlain, and Eau de Fleurs de Cedrat, sometimes L’Heure Bleue at bedtime.. They are easy to love, no sharp edges, everything in harmony.
Have a wonderful Friday, NSTers. Perfume is our superpower, and this world needs heroes today and everyday!
You smell great!
Guerlain is an amazing house
thanks, ltsg! Guerlain has won my heart again and again over the years.
What a great choice, I fell in love with it all over again, had to get a BUB. I find the magnolia very true and present in it, enjoy your treasured Guerlains.
thank you, Aurora! Jardins de Bagatelle definitely fulfills my love for white florals!
lucky you with that BUB 😀
I’m having one of those winter moments where I’m sick of winter fragrances and craving florals, but regardless, I just put on some Reglisse Noire, which I hadn’t worn yet this winter. Peppery!
One of my top three of all times scents…on me it’s a very unique gourmand
I’m craving florals too, so good on you for going in another direction! You smell great 😀
I’m craving florals too, so good on you for going in another direction! You smell great 😀
Gosh, that header picture is so pretty!
Partial credit today for adding a condition: my favorite winter scent has to be office friendly, since I have a review at work today. So I’m going with Bvlgari Omnia. Not sure what I’m going to do for “winter, but deskmate is 3 feet away” when this travel spray runs out.
Happy Friday, everyone!
Dorsey are you in the US? I could send you a decant to keep you going!
Yes, technically, I’m in Alaska 🙂
There’s no need though, I’m excited to finish it and sniff out a replacement 😀 But I’m sure there are other Omnia lovers here who would thank you for your generosity!
Yeah, the winter outside my window does NOT look like that 😉
I had a perfume dream last night, that I was spraying on Cologne du 68. But I don’t own that one, I have Parfum du 68. LOL. Anyway, I’m in the mood for Amouage Fate Woman today., so that’s what I’m going with. Happy Friday!
? Hilarious! Your subconscious was close, though! Happy Friday back ?
I had a dream the other night I was in Canada gorging on sweets I had never heard of or tastes before ???
Instead of “spraying”, I read “spawning” because the word “own” was under “spraying” and my eyes sometimes takes on two or three lines at a time and interprets the whole by making one word (real or made up) stand out. No. I’m not a freak…at least I don’t think I am.
LOL! My husband is dyslexic, nothing surprises me anymore. You should hear some of the stuff he comes out with. It’s a constant guessing game to figure out what he is trying to say.
a dream of Cologne du 68 sounds marvelous! 😀
TGIF! In the lasts drops of an almost evaporated sample of Cartier La Panthere. I had forgotten how pretty and warm this perfume is for winter. I am enjoying it a lot today!
Thunked ?
?
???
And I love the picture today Robin! So beautiful!
I agree! Reminds me of northern Michigan or really northern anywhere in the US. Beautiful.
🙂
That picture reminds me of the area near Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.
You smell great
Thank you! ?
Happy Friday!
The same to you!
Assam of India, which is the least winter-y scent! But I’ve almost drained my decant and can’t wait to get more. Maybe at the swapmeet…
Looking forward to the freebiemeet!
SarahN, if you are in the US, we could do a swap if you’d like….you can email me at pkwisdom in the land of yahoooo. I have a bottle of Assam and would be happy to make you a decant.
Thank you so much! It may be been you I swapped with originally 🙂
Will email you tonight!
Lol, I think it was! I’ll watch for your email.?
I love Assam in the cold. My skin amps up the sandalwood.
I love that one. You smell super good!
SOTD is SSS Winter Woods, one of my favorites for chilly weather.
And I love it in the summer. Laurie says my skin registers the Amber as a cozy vanilla and it works for me in the heat
Ooh yes. Wish I had thought of this today!
One of mine too!
I used my last little bit of Winter Woods last month – still hoping SSS will start back up!
You smell great! WW is one of my favorites as well.
I’m sleepy, annoyed at technology/my boss/people I have to work with who aren’t on my team, and wondering if I need to make some serious changes in my life, BUT I smell great in Ambre Narguile, which is one of my winter–nay, ALL-TIME–favorites.
Hoping your day improves, Koyel, you smell terrific 🙂
Aww, thanks, ringthing 🙂 My day did get a lot bigger!
Hoping things get less annoying very quickly, Koyel. You smell great.
Thanks, NovemberRose 🙂 It did!
Be patient Koyel. I am in the same boat thay you are now and I understand you well. It is very hard. But we are strong and we will survive!
I know, you’ve had a lot of frustrating times at work 🙁 Thanks, and I wish you courage, too!
I am super annoyed with people I work with too! terrible feeling as we spend so much of our waking hours there. Hope perfume helps.
Koyel, you’ve worked so hard and achieved so much already. If your environment is toxic vs. occasionally annoying move on. We think we can fix things by being smart, collaborative, empathetic, and smelling good, but sometimes the job is just a scrubber.
Love the scrubber descriptor! 🙂
!!!
+1 for this!
I love your analogy! Thanks for sharing it 🙂 And for the sentiment.
I completely understand work frustrations and totally get what you are saying. Glad you can find some joy in your fragrances; it can be your force-field against those annoying co-workers and situations.
I saw your response about Mirena yesterday but there were too many nested comments to reply. Sorry that it hasn’t been the holy grail for you; I hope you get some relief soon as it’s no fun to deal with all the time.
Thanks, Gail, I hope so too. It really isn’t!
And thanks for your kind work wishes, too 🙂 The day turned out not to be as bad as it started.
You do smell great. Along the lines of what Wendysue said above, make your move while you’re not desperate; otherwise, you will end up settling for the less ideal just to get away from your situation. Be well.
Yeah, that’s definitely great advice, and I really do need to put more effort into looking into that.
You smell fab. Don’t let the turkeys get you down.
Haha 🙂 thanks! I’ll do my best.
Hope your day gets better!
Thanks, KellyC <3 It did get a lot bigger!
Is your resume up to date? If not, working on that might make you feel a little better about your work situation. If it is, then that’s a head start on finding a better match for your talents and temperament.
That’s actually a really good idea. It’ll be interesting to see how I feel about the idea of leaving while making concrete moves to leave, like working on a resume.
I am wearing L’Artisan Mont de Narcisse today and drinking a cup of green tea. This is the second day in a row I have worn MdN. I bought this scent back in November and I have been enjoying it so much. I am curious how it will work when the temps get warmer around here.
I´m kind of desperate to try it. It sounds absolutely great.
Hypnotic Poison is a long time love but for whatever reason I’ve been wearing it often this winter. I have a couple bottles of vintage and I might actually use one up. Potential thunk?
I have not worn Hypnotic Poison in a long time. I have to look for my bottle. It is one of those forgotten perfume friends that I love!
You smell so good!
That is a stunning picture. I’m participating today in Un Jardin sur la Toit. I love to wear this in winter because wearing a rooftop garden in Paris is very helpful on days like today, when the wind chill is seven degrees. I’m also swathed in my favorite designer labels, Carhartt and Columbia.
But hey! on a brighter note, my boss brought in jelly donuts. I really shouldn’t have, but I’ve never been able to resist free donuts.
Carhartt, buy once lasts a lifetime, which some perfumes had that staying power 🙂
wish- bad typing
Ooh, I’ve been thinking about getting a new Enormous Down Coat for Minnesota winters (my current one sheds so many feathers I fear I’m turning into a swan) — Carhartt would be a great brand to try.
I got my packable down puffy coat from Costco for $50 and it has kept me warm for 5 years and it is still going strong.
My son wears a Carhartt parka, and I like it so much I bought a vest to match. But now I can only wear it when he is not around 🙂
🙂
I had planned to participate in the CP, there are many faves I had picked out but after a hard week where my project went off the rails some last minute, I craved something very polished yet relaxing hoping my scent would influence my demeanor.
Chanel Boy seemed like the right choice and I just thunked the last of my sample. I’m liking it a lot today and want more but the sample was the EDT. Has anyone tried the EDP version? Is it close to the EDT?
Have you been doing much thinking this year? I have been working on lotions and the like, and it’s going to take a while to make a dent…
Not really, this thunk was just by chance. I must like Boy more than I first realized.
Gi, I think Chanel Boy was the first one of the Les Exclusifs to come out as EDP only..bit Incould be mistaking it for Misia.
No, you’re right, Boy was launched as an edp.
Right! I forgot that and just assumed it was edt cause I got this sample before the edp conversion of the others.
One of my big favorites for winter is Armani Oud Royal.
Is it heavy on the oud?
No, it’s very tame and classy, very nicely blended.
Wearing my winter favorite for two years in a row: Narcisco Rodriguez For Her edt. I tried this in the heat once and didn’t like it at all, but it’s perfect in cool weather. I tested NR Fleur Musc at Ulta recently and now I want that one too . . .
I love the whole NR line. I also love that they can be found in 10 ml travel sprays….not to enable or anything.?
Oooh I didn’t see a 10ml of Fleur Musc when I tried it (if I had I would own it) – will have to check back!
I don’t know if Ulta carries the travel sparays, but my Nordstrom rack usually has them, or eBay.
I liked Fleur Musc, too.
Oooh, I have an Ulta gift card I need to burn up, maybe I’ll check their new one out. You smell good!
Interesting. I have never tried the NR EdT in cold weather, mostly spring and autumn. Will have to give it a go soon.
Eau des Merveilles. I wore this one last week for the first time in a long time and was reminded just how good it is.
My daughter heads back to college this weekend and I’m trying not to be sad about it. She did very well her first semester, and I’m so proud. Now the house will get quiet again. I had almost forgotten how much she and her younger sister giggle. I may be getting soft in my old age, but it really is music to my ears.☺️
Good luck to your daughter! Both of mine headed back on Saturday. They are both in a very competitive nursing program (only 25 students accepted out of over 1000 applicants…. apparently nursing is a hot major now) and the younger one got straight A’s first semester and an A in the winter class she took on line. We are hoping the momentum continues into this semester! The eldest is in her last semester and looking forward to working and making some money…. quite frankly so am I!!!
Thanks cm8!
Good for your daughter! Nursing programs are very competitive here too due to the shortage of instructors secondary to all the baby boomers retiring. I’ve had colleagues with teaching gigs lined up before they are even done with their graduate degrees because programs are so desperate for instructors.
Is your daughter done this spring?!
The eldest one will be done in the spring. Her goal is one year of hospital work and then possibly a DNP program. I told her your advice to do this ASAP. I know that lots of kids are looking into nursing now because you are basically guaranteed a high paying job after graduation. They both love science but didn’t like the prospect of graduating with a bachelor of science to a very low paying lab job or going to med school and coming out with a massive student loan. Nursing offers the best of both and it’s great if you enjoy helping folks. Plus as an NP you almost function as a doctor.
Hugs missing your daughter. Glad she is doing so well in school though! You smell great.
Hugs to both CM8 and madtowngirl re: their college students! Good job for getting them this far!
🙂
Thanks, J!
Friday!
1) Am annoyed. Placed an order to Carol’s Daughter for my sister; come to find out that they cancelled due to some issue with Paypal- but I never received the cancellation email. This is stupid and annoying; not the cancellation per se but their own internal email issues. I got the marketing emails JUST fine, but not the cancellation one. GRRRR.
2) Am in TF Noir, which is a warm, sexy fragrance that is amazing in the winter.
After just a couple of years in dealing with the public I started noticing customer service much more. Too many people seem to avoid telling bad news, when it’s the -lack- of communication that drives costumers bonkers.
This is very, very true!
Re your 1)..Same thing happened to me with a Clinique order! Cancelled the perfume with no obvious email notification; it was buried way down in the email that your order has been sent notification.
And I was charged for the UPS delivery for the freebie item tagged with the cancelled item. I had to call to get my card refunded for the perfume purchase.
ARRRRGGGH!
And even now, when the CSR told me that they resent it I do not see it. Sigh. Well, I will check with PayPal about it to make sure that I was not charged
I am just disappointed for my sister!
Seriously!! It’s so frustrating dealing with CS for online purchases when things go sideways. You just want to send something to someone — should be simple!
I hope they get it resolved for you quickly.
You smell great!
*hugs and inhales* So do you! 🙂
I was going to wear Shalimar Ode a la Vanille but ran out of decanting supplies. Wearing LADDM instead. I really like it in winter.
Both choices sound good. Have a happy weekend, Dawn
You smell awesome
Good choice, this works in winter and summer
SOTD: The Body Shop Shea EDT. My coziest scent. I bought a marked-down FB for dirt cheap (less than $10) when I thought it was being discontinued awhile ago, but turns out they just updated the packaging. Whew.
I almost blind bought that one for the same price when I was looking for a Shea butter scent having fallen in love with the Nubian Heritage Raw Shea Butter body cream. Good to know it’s still available.
Oh, that is a nice one, especially when layered after Nubian Heritage soap after the shower.
Have you tried the raw Shea Butter? It goes with the soap too
Yes, the body lotion! It’s really awesome in the winter. I also like the one with Frankincense and Myrrh.
That’s the one!!! Raw Shea Butter with frankincense and myrrh!!! It’s phenomenal on my super dry skin!!! And the smell!!!! So good!!
Oh wait… I was talking about the Shea Butter in the pot that you have to warm up by rubbing hands together….buuutttt… I ALSO have the soap, the body lotion and the hand cream… Vitacost had them all on sale AND I had an extra 20 percent off! I already emptied two tubs and used five soaps!!!
Oh and ede, do the soap and the EDT smell the same? If so I need the EDT ?
To me they have that warm yet fresh nutty smell!
Ooo… I will seek it out then next time I am at a Body Shop
It was a stompy boots and dark red lipstick kind of day. So: MAAI. It might be huge* and complex and opulent and thought-provoking, but it’s also an incredibly comfortable wear–particularly on a mild but solid grey winter’s day, striding around the city I love to bits.
*particularly with the amount I am wearing today. Woohoo!
Yum! What is the city you love to bits?
Edinburgh 🙂
Lucky you! I visited it once, years ago. Now I’m reading my way through the 44 Scotland Street series by Alexander McCall Smith and feel like I’m getting to know the city.
I LOVE this series and warmly recommend it to all! It’s got short chapters, characters you get to love or hate and lots of logical philosophy. It’s a feel-good reading experience.
I love that series and recommended it a while ago on NST. And it also has made me want to visit Scotland 🙂
I used to live round the corner from Scotland Street, so the places (and people) are very familiar to me!
and thank you, Crikey, for telling me how to pronounce it (Edinburgh) on Australian Perfume Junkies!
It’s so nice to see a fellow fan here! 🙂
Jonette- I would recommend that you read all of his series (he has several)…they are all extremely well written with interesting characters. He is probably my favorite writer of all time.
One of our neighbours is Scottish and last night we were sitting out on the deck when a visitor at their house ( don’t know who because we have big trees between us and them ) started playing the bagpipes. It was a slightly chilly but calm evening, with a bit of low cloud over the valley and it was magic! When they finished we gave them a big clap and we got an encore. Anyway, I thought of you up there in the north.
What is MAAI by the way?
Duh… Just realised last night was Burns Night here!
Oh, even more perfect!
Oh, how lovely! Other than running into Clanadonia* rehearsing halfway up a volcano, that’s pretty much the perfect way to hear bagpipes! (rather than, say, during the August festivals when pipers are murdering Flower of Scotland on every street corner. Argh!)
MAAI is one of Bogue’s perfumes, so by Antonio Gardoni who is an architect by day and an indie/artisan perfumer by night. It’s a dark chypre sitting under layers of rich, warm, resinous dirty florals and soaring aldehydes. I love his stuff. This, along with his shape-shifting lavender MEM and the vetiver Aeon 001, are among my real favourites. It’s something about that twisted open and refolded classical approach that fascinates me about Vero Kern’s perfumes too.
*well worth looking them up on youtube
Waft on!!
Like the other Elisa, I’ve been craving brighter florals, so almost went with Au Dela Narcisse. But, there are a few I still crave. Ended up wearing Anubis today. I do love this one!
In other lemming news, I was re-upping on my hair product at a local beauty supply shop, and they had a tester of Rad Soap Company Toke body cream (which is more of a balm) which I rubbed into my cuticles and couldn’t stop sniffing myself! Delicious sandalwood with a bit of vanilla sweetness. I got home and promptly ordered their cute little trial sized sampler of products. Looking forward to trying their other stuff!
Thanks for the information.
Love so many Papillon creations.
I also like her line.
Elisa synchronicity!
?✌
oooh, that deep dark Anubis is pretty much the opposite of ADN, but both so very good!
I do love both, though the base of ADN smells a bit dark to me.
I’ll be interested in hearing how those trial sized body products work Elisa P. I have ridiculously dry cuticles now that winter is here.
The daily pic is beautiful. I went with Fleur de Peau because I’ve enjoyed wearing it so much this winter. A big enabler pin to hajusuuri for her tiara.
You smell so wonderful! I’ve enjoyed that one a lot lately too.
Glad to hear it performs well in winter. You smell so elegant, I loved that one when I tried it in the summer, subtle but long lasting.
Yes!!!!
Sounds like Fleur de Peau is headed for Most Valuable Perfume status in your wardrobe.
Hermès Eau de Neroli Dore.
Not really a Summer favorite because it is so fleeting.Still a refreshing cologne, sprayed with enthusiasm!
Happy Weekend!
You smell all sunshiny, and I bet other people notice your scent.
Why thank you!!I hope so too!Haha!?
Sometimes refreshing and fleeting are exactly what is needed in the furnace of summer weather.
It’s cold and going to get colder. It’s a good day to wear one of my first and all time favorites, Portrait of a Lady.
I wore PoaL earlier this week – such a beautiful scent.
Lovely, absolutely lovely.
PoaL is my favorite as well though I haven’t worn it for a while… Need to rectify soon!
Tea for Two for me today. I’ve worn this more often this winter than anything else.
I’ve worn that one a lot lately too; it always suits.
You smell amazing.
You smell great!
Still in a cloud of Baccarat Rouge 540 from yesterday. I smelled good! I may switch it up after my bath but may not, TBD.
Thank you for all of the sweet words Wednesday. It was a really perfect, special day yesterday! I couldn’t have asked for anything better and am so happy! If you are interested, you can see some pics on my Instagram (link below). Happy Friday, everyone!

Sure is!Indigenous to the Cape Town mountainous area, know as Fynbos(“fine bush”).Glad I was “represented” at your nuptials then!Hehe!❤️✌??

So glad your special day went so well, you look radiant.
Hey there Gorgeous!
Gorgeous, and I am sure you smelled great, too!! Many happy wishes for a lovely life together.
Gorgeous!! Congratulations!
What a beautiful location and you both look so happy
OMG, sorry I missed this. Congratulations!!!!!!!
I have the original EDM, the L’Ambre, the Elixir, and the Claire and vary them by season. I use the same amount of sprays for each and have found L’Ambre to last only a disappointingly small fraction of the time as the others. I can smell the EDM all day.
This was supposed to go above in response to AnnieA, not sure how it got here, sorry!
Beautiful pics, beautiful couple! Wishing you all the best for many years to come.
I know I’m repeating everybody, but just gorgeous, both of you.
Thank you so much, everyone! ❤️
CONGRATULATIONS! You looked gorgeous and radiant… Your wedding day scent is just perfection too…
How fantastic and you do look utterly fabulous–gorgeous dress and I love your lipstick, too! How wonderful and I wish you and your new husband all the very very best!
Many happiest decades for both of you! Loved the pictures. You looked very beautiful.
You are a stunning couple! Congratulations!!!
You looked fantastic in your photos! Mazel tov! And many more years of happiness and companionship.
And Happy Scented Birthday, too! ???
Congratulations to you both! And thank you for sharing the great pictures. It’s obvious you guys are made for each other.
Gorgeous! Looks like it was a wonderful day- congratulations to you both!?
I totally forgot about the CP but my choice today is an old winter favorite, just somewhat neglected this year: Annick Goutal Vanille Exquise. I have used half my bottle which is unusual for me – I must have worn the heck out of it when I bought it because it has been forgotten the last year or two as my collection grew.
I have to find my bottle
on my sample list it goes….
Ditto
I’m really tired today and am so happy it’s Friday and I won’t have to wake up to an alarm tomorrow.
After much deliberation this morning I chose Chris Rusak QUA (Quasi una absurdia). It’s a lily heavy clean powdery floral on me. My lily- sensitive coworker isn’t coming in until 11 today, so I figured it was a safe day to wear it. Though it is still going strong, and I only have 40 minutes until her arrival.
No solid weekend plans yet, but there’s a chance we’ll either go see a movie tomorrow or go to a certain French restaurant to eat steak frites. Either one sounds great right now!
Hope your weekend is great!
Really tired twins! It might be an early night for me tonight.
Steak frites is my favorite meal in the world. Have fun!
Sprayed on Lonestar Memories this morning.
And then thought: Wasn’t there an NST conversation recently about LM being NSFW?
Oh, well. I have met the enemy (er, co-workers) and they have not complained yet…
TGIF!
What is NSFW?
Not safe for work.
Thank you 🙂
I have a sample i will have to revisit soon.
I love that one! I would love to get a whiff of that at work!
I’d rather smell Lonestar Memories on someone than Nyquil or Mentholatum!
HA!!! That’s a low bar, indeed. 🙂
Parfum D’Empire’s Le Cri DeLa Luminere over Prada’s Id’I body creme.
Happy Friday NST’ers!
I bet it’s a great combo.
You smell wonderful! I’ve got a small sample of Le cri and I really enjoy it.
Love the winter sun in the beautiful photo.
In a recent love, Bottega Veneta Eau de Velours, today I realized it reminds me a bit of a softer AG Mon Parfum Cheri, will have to wear them together to confirm the impression.
Had a delicious bean burger with fresh tomato salsa for lunch so this evening I’ll just have some tinned soup
Your lunch sounds great!
It really was delicious especially the salsa, I had never been to that place, I was invited by my boss.
Soup for dinner sounds like a great idea for cold, chilly weather. ?
Thank you Jalapeno, yes even canned (carrot and coriander), I often make fresh soup during the weekend.
Nothing today (working around the house), but will get decked out tonight topped with Une Rose–one of may favorite date night scents whatever the season.
You’ll smell fabulous!
Have fun!
Very nice picture, Robin
SOTD = Chanel Coromandel EDT
6 sprays and then my eyes rolled to the back of my head!
Thank you everyone for the under $10 gift suggestions yesterday,
I am ready for some hot chocolate!
Did you get your hiking sticks?
Not yet. I briefly considered getting aluminum ones but I want lighter so need to get titanium at 3-4x the cost. Oy vey! Thanks for the site link as I read through and saw that even the grip is a consideration!
Six?! You smell *glorious*
Yes ? and thank you!
You smell so good!
Thank you, KellyC!
Smelling great today! Did you have your hot chocolate? If so, were there any special “additions” to it? ?☕
Thank you, jalapeño! I had the hot chocolate straight ?
I picked up a bag of mini marshmallows during my last Target run specifically for hot cocoa. It just doesn’t seem the same without them.
And I just realized that I use hot chocolate and hot cocoa interchangeably. Pretty sure that there was a discussion here recently that pointed out the differences.
Imagine all those birthday girls and boys at the table. Virginia Woolf doing the bossa nova, Etta James singing Auld lang syne. Burns serving haggis, Woolf bringing flowers, herself. A chorus of the girl from Ipanema. Sigh. Back to reality.
Immortal Beloved again…like grandiflora boronia but with a bit of spunk. Heady in summer, cosy in winter. Happy weekend!
Love your birthday table imagery!!
What a party!
(and you could add in John Cooper Clarke, with some excellently sweary poetry!)
Really ? Now that would be special.
great party there! you made me smile today 😀
Excellent!!
I’m not participating in the CP today because my samples from Rogue Perfumery arrived. They proudly proclaim themselves as “non-IFRA compliant” and I’m testing Chypre-Siam, with notes of Kaffir lime, basil, spices, jasmine, lyang ylang, oakmoss, sandalwood, benzoin, and civet. He uses nitromusks, too. This is old-school perfumery, and I mean that in the best possible way. Two little dabs on my wrists and I’m in heaven.
Do the vials have little skull&crossbones on them, like the more rebellious cigarette packs?
Sounds totally awesome
That sounds great!
What are nitromusks?
Not very good things!
Disclaimer, may not be 100% accurate:
Musk xylene and musk ketone are the nitromusks. They’re lipophilic (build up in fatty tissue), have very poor biodegradability (no signs of breakdown at the 1 month mark), and are associated with cancers in mouse models (but lots of things are associated with cancer in mouse models).
There isn’t really a proven risk to human health as far as I know, but there is a significant concern in relation to the historical quantity of nitromusks that were being used in cosmetics, laundry products, etc. and the long term effects on wildlife.
I hear they smell fantastic though!
https://www.nicnas.gov.au/chemical-information/imap-assessments/imap-assessments/tier-ii-environment-assessments/nitromusks
* the long term effects on wildlife thing might be about estrogen mimicry? While nitromusks don’t look very much like estrogen to me, the structure of other polycyclic musks (they have many structural rings which often improves stability in chemicals, and they’re also on the banned list) are much more similar to estrogens and androgens at first glance. I’m not a professional chemist though, so feel free to grab a handful of salt.
From my limited reading on this topic when i was pregnant the accumulation of polycyclic musks in the body has effect with regard to toxin build up
This sounds wonderful! I immediately googled and read reviews, etc. and looked at the Etsy site. I’ll have to find out if he can send to Europe.
Enabler pin to you!!!! Looked it up on etsy, saw that he ships to Germany und blindbought a bottle. Still can make a split on parfumo or the splitmeet…
Oh great! I will be ordering!
Now I get the enabler pin 🙂
Hi All,
Playing along today in Chypre Mousse, my all time fave in cold weather.
Unfortunately, I found out this morning that a family friend is in the ICU with a rare blood disease. If any of you are of a mind to send good healing wishes and/or prayers, I’d greatly appreciate it.
Oh no! Keeping them in my thoughts!
Best wishes and mojo for your friend!
Sending healing thoughts and prayers for your friend.
I hope they make a full recovery
So sorry to hear that your family friend is ailing! Positive thoughts headed to you both.
I hope they find the right protocols to treat your friend!
By Kilian Amber Oud for the CP today: love this perfume!
I’m ready for this day to be over for many reasons. But at least I enjoy my perfume.
Have a good weekend, everyone!
Hope tomorrow is better for you
I hope your weekend is better and not just because it’s the weekend!
I should pull out my Amber Oud!
Wearing Zoologist Camel today and continuing to work through the very thoughtful Christmas gift from my in-laws (so many perfume samples!).
That’s one that I wore earlier this week, and is definitely a winter favourite for me. You smell wonderful!
Wore Felanilla today again, i think its my most worn scent of the winter.
Now in one spray of Salome, which is a really heavy hitter. Made some pizza at home with mushrooms, salami and truffle oil and now i am stuffed….. But i was at the gym before, so i “needed” the carbs….
Wow! Two awesome scents in one day! You smell fantastic!
I love Truffle Oil in moderation!
On a morning that opened with a temperature of -6 degrees and a windchill of -20 but with a bright blue sky and sunlight glistening on the snow, there’s only one fragrance I could wear for today’s CP: AG Songes edp. Although I don’t wear it often I consider it a favorite for two very different kinds of days. A bitterly cold yet peaceful winter’s day spent indoors at home, and a sultry summer night spent at an outdoor event, most likely, a concert, one of our favorite summer activities. This fragrance is unique to me for two reasons: I can’t think of any other scent I have that I would wear for two such opposite seasons/occasions, and I was extremely surprised when I fell madly in love with Songes the very first time I tried it because I really dislike white floral fragrances. Although I sometimes enjoy jasmine, so perhaps it’s this note coupled with the soft vanilla that caused me to swoon.
The weather for the next week promises lots more snow and supposedly the coldest actual temperature in 23 years midweek, so hibernating will continue for the forseeable future. And I’m lovin’ it!
Wishing everyone a wonderful weekend ahead however you spend it. Stay warm (or cool if you’re in the opposite climate from me), stay well.
I love winter and I especially love quiet snow days with dazzling light, and the slurp of snow falling froom roof tops …which we never get . Enjoy your hibernation.
Songes is great!
How is Little Bear Luna dealing with the cold?
She’s impervious to everything! She runs around until she’s exhausted then finds one of the numerous kitty ‘pies’ to curl up in. She also likes to come under the covers sometimes with us but just for a little while.
My ‘kicking old man Winter in the ass’ fragrance is L’air du desert marocain. Today I took it out of its little metal box and gave it a place of honor on the perfume tray. I usually just decant a little from bottles for use and keep the bottles under wraps but because I’ve been pouring this on daily decided to spray from the mothership.
Smelling great today!
Ha, spraying from the mothership! I’m tickled!
This post has all kinds of “Win!” in it!
You smell great!
Late late late today!
I enjoyed Fat Electrician so much last Friday, that I’m back in it today for a favorite winter scent. One spray is still hanging around 9 hours later…..
Have a great weekend y’all!
Wow!
I am in Virgile and Mohur – another layering combo that works! I havent been outside yet and it looks cooold.
Interesting, would have thought the Mohur would take over.
A very late comment as I sit at the hairdresser with my head covered in bleach. I’m wearing SL’s A La Nuit, which is not one of my absolute favourites, but I am wondering why I don’t wear it more often.
Did you add any other color at the hairdresser’s, or did you stick with platinum blonde?
Hello NSTers! Thank you for the birthday well wishes yesterday. I appreciated them very much! Pizza has been ordered for tonight’s dinner, so I’m set.
I did get a birthday call from my mom yesterday, but it was bittersweet. My mom wasn’t sure if it was my birthday or not. But she said that she knew she had something important to do. That drove home the thought that I don’t know how many more birthday phone calls I will get from my mom.
SOTD = AG Heure Exquise EdP, from the sample/decant stash. This might be another thunk for me if I keep on keeping on. It gets even better in cold weather.
That’s sad about your mom. Happy belated birthday, and enjoy your pizza!
Thank you Calypso! My mom has good days and bad days now.
Your comment made me sad Jalapeno. I live very far away from my mom and only get to see her once a year. I often worry about when i will never get to see again and i wish i was able to see her more now
I’m sorry! I didn’t mean to make you sad yasmina.
I also live far from my mother… two time zones away.
No need to be sorry! Happy birthday and here is to moms everywhere
Truth!
Sorry I missed your birthday yesterday; best wishes for a delicious pizza celebration this evening!
Bittersweet, indeed… Sending wordless sympathy to you and your mom.
Thank you Fears Mice. The pizza was quite tasty!
As for my mom, well, she is in her late 80’s. She had a stroke back in December, so that could be a factor in what is happening right now.
I’m happy you got a birthday call. Sending a hug to you. I know it hurts, I’m sorry.
Thank you lilllyjo. I am very glad I did get the call, though, and that my mom did not forget.
That’s bittersweet, jalapeño. Belated happy birthday.
Thanks hajusuuri.
Happy belated birthday wishes, Jalapeño, and may the next year bring more ‘sweet’ than ‘bitter’ your way. How touching that the bond between you two is so strong thst even unsure of herself your mom remembered on some level the importance of that day. And how wise of you to recognize and treasure those special moments, sad though they may be.
I am not doing the CP today exactly since I’m too interested in trying perfumes from my St. Clair sample pack. I tried Gardeners Glove earlier today and after a mere two minutes or less had to rush to the kitchen sink and scrub it off with Dawn. It was absolutely DEADLY on me. Something about the combination of linden and whatever else, tomato leaf and galbanum, reminded me of the ether I had as the anaesthetic during childhood surgeries, and made me nauseous. Now I’m wearing Frost which is going much better (thank God!). It turns out it’s not named after winter frost but the poet. It’s quite lovely and unusual, with citrus, honeysuckle, and cedar standing out. Here in Houston we don’t exactly have winter anyway. Today is gorgeous and it reached 66 and was sunny. We do have rare cold days or even snow but it’s fairly mild. The other day I noticed on the national weather map that southern Texas was the warmest place in the country! It’s important to enjoy now while we can because it’ll be abominable before too long.
I think I would like living in Texas more than Michigan
My mom is super happy to be here now rather than up in Michigan!
Oh, good to know about the linden in Gardener’s Glove! That note doesn’t work for me, either.
I wore several sprays of Chanel No 19 edt with a couple drops of carrot seed oil to Costco today. Glad I put that on because it was crazy busy for some unknown reason. People stopping with their carts in the middle of the of the aisle is just mind-boggling; I don’t even feel guilty about nearly clipping their heels.
And I’m very thankful for my neighbor; she noticed that the roofers didn’t install the new vents on our roof for the dryer ventilation. She saw the roofers still in our complex today so basically told them off (she used to be on the strata board). Our vents are now installed..lol
So great to have a neighbor like that! Glad she went to bat for you.
The things that workers “forget” to do on a job just baffles me sometimes…
Good thing you had the No. 19 to keep you safe at Costco 🙂
She’s great! I really appreciate her.
We had a couple good laughs about the who!e situation. Our driveway was blocked for several days during the job with ladders and trucks and wasn’t even cleaned up properly with the nails remaining from the removal. She kinda put them in their place (apparently there was swearing by the roofers). Although she’s a Mom, I am not!
Wow, your neighbor sounds quite formidable! And also rather savvy… not too many people would have noticed the missing vents. Good for her!
I really like her. She noticed our vents probably because her other neighbor called her about her own vents when the dryer exhaust was all crazy earlier this week.
She walked the whole complex today to investigate the deficiencies. It helps because she used to be on the complex board of directors so she knows how to stir the pot!
Coromandel for me. It is cool enough to wear it today (by Florida standards.)
We’re twins! I wore 5 sprays but it is cold here in the northeast!
Correction – 6 sprays!
Scratching my citrus itch in Imaginary Authors Sundrunk. Earnestly trying to unwinter winter.
And I am cheering you on…I’m done with cold.
So late…
I’m tired, guys
Sotd was Ambre Nuit, It’s my first winter wearing it. It’s a like more than a love. I sprayed some on my coworker and he really liked it. I’ve been letting him try my more unisex scents. He said how do you find out about all these different perfumes!? I started talking to him after I smelled him wearing Bvgari Black one day.
The next 7 days are going to stink weather wise, I will try not to whine, but forgive me if I do ?
I’ve seen the weather forecast for your area! I’d say grumble all you want to. That’s some seriously dangerous stuff. Be careful out there!
BTW, that’s really cool you have a perfume buddy at work.
Whine away. NST is my safe place and I keep it a “secret”.
That’s awesome that you have discovered a fellow fragrance friend at work!
And you can complain about the nasty weather any time. I hate it when it just snows here but thankfully we don’t get really low temperatures for too long.
I will whine with you!
Whine please! I will join you!
i will be whining with you about the weather 🙁
I’ll be whining with you! The temps for the next week look downright scary! Our predicted “high” on Wednesday will be negative 10!?
YIKES!!!!!! Stay warm!!
Belated reply again. I ended up putting on a little Old Spice in the evening, which reminds me of my grandmother’s second husband, who loved my brother and I very much. Though he passed in the 1980s, we have lots of good memories of him.
The Old Spice bottle says something like, “If your grandfather hadn’t worn this, you wouldn’t have been born.” Not exactly, but it could be that one of my mother’s half-brothers wouldn’t have been born. My brother is especially close with that uncle, so we certainly appreciate the sentiment.
Take care!
Can’t blame you for having a soft spot for Old Spice. And it smells so good, too!
Love Old Spice and because it was originally released as a woman’s fragrance you can most definitely wear it.
