Thursday scent of the day 1/24

Posted by Robin on 24 January 2019 266 Comments

Thursday, and Edith Wharton's birthday. There are 55 days left of winter, and the freebiemeet is coming up this Saturday. What fragrance are you wearing?

I went with Guerlain Spiritueuse Double Vanille.

Reminder: on 1/25, wear one of your favorite fragrances of this winter (unless it's summer where you are, in which case wear one of your favorite scents of this summer).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I’m in NYC too! The weather this past week has been giving me whiplash… white florals seem like a nice way to combat the chill and rain 🙂

I’m wearing Voleur de Roses today, from one of my full bottles. Tomorrow’s community project is easy for me, since I’ve worn one fragrance more than others this winter. What I’ve noticed is that this winter I’ve worn one house more than any other. I have been working on wearing my untried samples this winter, but when I reach for something else, it always seems to be a L’Artisan fragrance. They make a lot of scents that are winter appropriate.

Plucked from the giant untested sample pile, SOTD is Maya by Tocca. Not quite sure it’s bringing me joy. In fact, I think it’s bringing me a headache.

This line is really hit or miss for me. Colette was my signature before I got really into perfume and I still wear it regularly, but they have some scrubbers as well.

    Hello Gang!

    1) Edith Wharton- a writer, designer and traveler par excellence. I always admired her- and we share a name!

    2) Am in Beauty Pie’s Petals, Heliotrope and Ambrette, from the sample. On the fence on whether to buy this- – it goes on light, like a whisper, and then develops into a subtle murmur of white florals and skin musk. This is a perfect office scent, and as I said before, would perform beautifully in heat.

In Lalique Le Parfum(2005)today layered over Pacifica Island Vanilla lotion. A few caveats about the Lalique. It is a savory/spicy vanilla oriental and will not give you a cavity. If you decide to seek out a bottle get an older one! My juice is brown and the reformulated bottles have clear juice and I have read are not as good.

Lalique is one of those perfumes I google stalk very frequently. I have never sniffed it but the notes sound appealing. I am trying to stop doing blind buys cuz they rarely work out for me but it’s relatively cheap online so maybe i will eventually take the plunge.
What you are saying about the reformulation is a common complaint in the reviews. But how do we get the older bottles? Is there a go-to place for you online?

Hey all, I’m in TF F*ing Fabulous today, and actually, it smells pretty f*ing great, which was not previously my experience with this one. I wonder what’s going on with my body. Now that I’m drinking coffee, its notes are also mixing quite nicely with the coffee smell.

I got into work more than an hour later than I usually do, which means there was terrible traffic (we have funny traffic patterns in my part of the SF Bay Area; if I leave by 7:30, there’s almost no traffic at all, but if I leave at 8:30, suddenly the whole world of buttfaced Californian drivers are on the road).

On the upside, I had a really yummy Afghan bun thing for breakfast, from a bag of them brought to me by an Afghan coworker based in Boise, whom I became friends with on my own business trips to Idaho. She came over to my place for dinner last night, and we made some kind of weird tea infusion thing with numbing spices, walnuts, ginger, and jaggery that’s supposed to help with…period cramps? I look forward to trying it again the next time I actually have period cramps (which, let’s look at my phone, are due in five days, hooray).

They’re doughy little yeast buns topped with sesame and nigella seeds! I looked them up, and they appear to be called kolcha mazari. It looks like there are some variations, but the ones I received are savory, but not really salty, the way a plain bagel might be.

The outside is browned and slightly bitter, like pretzels or bagels. The mie is flavored with cardamom and saffron. They’re a leeeeetle drier than I’d like, but very tasty, and I think they’d be even yummier if I had the time to heat them up a bit. My friend also suggested topping them with butter and honey. She called them cookies, and so do other people on the Internet, but they’re way too doughy for a Western concept of a cookie.

That is no consolation at all! I’m from the east coast, but never drove there, and never want to. My boyfriend has, and says they’re equally aggressive and dreadful and non-rule-abiding, but smarter about it. YMMV. But

And thanks 🙂 I’ve had pretty bad cramps for the past two years 🙁

Koyel, don’t suffer with cramps! I had debilitating cramps to the point where I was throwing up for days each month. I absolutely dreaded it!! My hubby finally took me to the hospital and got an immediate referral to an ob/gyn. I was put on Mirena IUD, and had no cramps after the 2nd month. It was an absolute life-saver!

I’m sorry to say that this is WITH Mirena. Actually I never got serious cramps before my second Mirena. I got it checked out and they said there were some polyps that should disappear in a couple months, but that was a year ago, and here we are…. I really should go back to the obgyn. I’m sorry about the severity of your cramps, though! I only have debilitating pain for a couple minutes at a time, and have never thrown up from the pain. I am concerned about them popping up while I’m driving or something, though.

        • Eschmeling says:
          26 January 2019 at 2:39 am

One last mirena comment: my first mirena was great. Second not so much (cramps etc.). My doc suggested taking it out and putting in another, identical mirena – she admitted she didn’t know why this would make any difference but had one other patient where this worked. I did get it replaced and immediately, I was back to no cramps, etc. So perhaps worth asking your doc about.

Hello, all! I’ve been AWOL a while. Dealing With Issues, and then away on vacation. Spent a week in the Galapagos. It was a very busy trip (kayak! hike! snorkel!) but fun. Lots to see there. I think I’m about back to normal life in my normal time zone now. But there is still much laundry to do…

Sniffed a few new things in Duty Free (loads of airport transits on this trip. 6 flights!) Cartier Carat deserves a better sniff at some point. The new L’Interdit, on the other hand, was awful awful awful. That one should be interdicted. L’Interdict.

Speaking of Duty Free, who decided to call it DuFre? Is it some middle management pathetic attempt to sound hip and cool to the young folks? It’s just painfully bad. Stop it.

It’s true… most of the animals have no fear of man. You actually have to watch where you step sometimes because they won’t get out of your way.

We saw iguanas (marine and land), sea lions, giant tortoises, fur seals, sea turtles, dolphins, and birds birds birds. Boobies, pelicans, frigate birds, tropic birds, albatross, finches, mockingbirds… did you know that Darwin initially noticed the variation in mockingbirds, not finches?

The snorkeling was really great! Loads of pretty fishies of course, but also sting rays, eagle rays, spotted rays, sharks, and PENGUINS. Man are they fast underwater!

I’m commando, and a touch of food poisoning will probably keep me from spritzing (for now, anyway). But I wanted to report back on my Climat vs. Dia comparison. They are not that similar. They share some characteristics (aldehydes, florals, touch of green, similar opening) but the mid development and dry down is fairly different. Climat is greener and “plantier” (mild pee note – or perhaps a “sour honey” note) and overall feels more 70ies (duh – it’s from that time). Dia feels cleaner, more rounded, perhaps fresher, too. Dia is easier to wear, and lasts much longer, even though it’s quieter. Neither is an overpowering fragrance. Personally, Dia is more to my taste, which is too bad, since I have less of it. 🙂
I’m hankering after a 2nd piece of toast very badly. Not sure if I should risk it.

In 4160 Tuesdays A Kiss by the Fireplace. Sample thunk! A pretty woody, smoky, spicy scent with a very nice clove and lavender opening and woody in the drydown. Cozy and warming. Sadly, it did not last more than 4 hours. Not a candidate for a full bottle.

How long do perfumes usually last for you? It is rare that a perfume lasts more than 4 hours on my scent devouring skin.

      • perfumelover67 says:

Good question! It depends on the perfume. Average 7 to 8 hours. However there are times when a perfume lasts a long time and others when the same perfume disappears in 2-3 hours. That is why I always spray on clothes. A Kiss by the Fireplace even sprayed on clothes was gone in 4 hours. On skin gone in 2 hours. And my skin is very well hydrated.

When left to themselves, babies usually come in the spring. But the Jockey Club has decreed that all Thoroughbreds have a Jan 1 birthday, so breeders like them born early. In the northern hemisphere, foaling season is usually January to June, with anything born after late April/early May considered a late foal.

The Age of Innocence was one of my favorite books that I read for English class in high school. I highly recommend it to those who haven’t read it. I should read more Wharton and maybe reread TAoI one day.

I’m wearing Queen of the Night, a favorite perfume of mine this winter. I am not calling it a winter perfume, only noting that I have especially enjoyed wearing it through the last couple of months. I remember I wasn’t wowed by it when I first got my decant about a year ago, but I’ve totally fallen in love with it now.

    SOTD = SL Chergui

I am judiciously using my bottle and I have about 35 mLs left. I heard that there’s been a refo’ and the new Chergui is a shadow of its former self.

Question for the community: what is a good gift for a bunch of guys aged anywhere from their 30s to 50s/60s, some of whom you know well, others not so. The budget is under $10 per item, it must be the same for all (except color) and cannot be perishable or food/beverage. Thanks.

Yummy frag choice Robin! The weather here is so icky. Ice rain, snow, gray out sky. I was commissioned to draw a sexy female figure today so I did a Goldilocks to find the right mood scent. First I put on some chypre mousse and immediately scrubbed it off. That one is eau de grave digger. Then I picked jub 25 and it was way too zsa zsa. Scrubbed it. Finally settled on my darling Fleur de peau. Problem is that there are traces of the other two so I smell like an eighteenth century dental office dungeon.
I might have to scrub again before I go out.?

Bottega Veneta was my SOTD and was complimented by my receptionist. Now wearing a bit of Ambre Russe. This would be a good scent for a champagne and vodka party.

Ta’if, which I think of as cold weather scent. And it lets me thunk a decant!

Goes well with the Tuberose di Notte room spray I just blasted around.

All intended to cover the cat food smell. I don’t think it’s that pervasive, especially now we can have windows open, but I’ve become sensitive to it… Thanks everyone, by the way, for your sweet thoughts on my little old lady. It won’t be long, but she’s quite happily accepting the syringe feedings.

I stayed at home today and I sprayed some Straight to Heaven by Kilian from a sample. I am contemplating if I should buy the travel size of this one for a couple of years. I think it’s on my to buy list since 2016, but never quite at the top of the list.

It’s been pouring buckets here all day. Sometimes there’s been enough wind to rattle the windows. I’m not sure any of the folks with cold, windy, snowy weather would want this instead. I’ve checked the long term weather forecast, and it looks absolutely yucky. Sub zero temps making a comeback??? Bletch.

Song of the day = Samurai Cop (Oh Joy Begin) by the Dave Matthews Band. It’s been a fairly persistent earworm this week. Fortunately, I kind of like it.

Birthday SOTD = AG Heure Exquise EdP again. It’s beautiful in cool rainy weather. And having a smidge of extreme drydown this morning when I woke up also made my decision easy.

I’m hoping for a birthday pizza for dinner. Keeping it low key.

Sunny but windy and chilly today (chilly because I am indoors working – outside in the sun it’s not too bad apparently). We accepted an offer on our house, so fingers crossed this time it goes through and we can be shot of it. ;^D

Spent the day in Ex Idolo “Ryder” – tobacco, jasmine, amber, resins, dark woodsy notes, olibanum and tahitian vanilla.

Was rummaging for perfume to take to Dallas, and found a nearly evaporated sample of Rose 31. It goes well with the BK. Rose, spice, oud and musk…..nice.

Looking forward to divesting myself of some more unloved frags in the Freebiemeet on Saturday. I still have a LOT of perfume, but it feels good to have found homes for those I never wore. Making myself take stock of my collection also caused me to rediscover some that I had simply forgotten about. I have also started a scent diary listing each perfume I wear throughout the year. I wish I had started on the 1st, but I was able to reconstruct much of January from my SOTD comments on NST.

Wearing SJP Lovely tonight. Needed something calm and unobtrusive as it was a day today! Many things went wrong, and lots of extra pressure to get stuff done by a deadline as I’m off tomorrow.

And to top it off, my order from Tauer was chosen my swiss postal service to be ‘randomly’ searched. As it turns out, my mini of PHI was sent back to Andy, but they did send me to the empty PHI tin and their love-note about the perfume being sent back to sender. And I still don’t have the Wownilla oil from that order either which should have been sent separately. Andy did kindly re-send about a week ago after I inquired with him when I hadn’t received the original order; hopefully that order will show up.

    I need chips!

Checking in very late after a long day of work and other duties. Enjoyed reading all the posts. My SOTD was HdP 1740 (Marquis de Sade): Patchouli is always good in any season, and dark patchouli + leather like this is good in winter, although tbh, Houston winters hardly qualify. HOWEVER, our traffic is now reaching nightmare proportions with a major major freeway intersection closure, that wreaks havoc on my life… just don’t know quite how to cope, but hoping to figure out some alternative arrangements. This is a six-month closure that is sure to send many, many people, commuters and just passers-through, up the wall, and it’s hard to believe it is being handled so badly.
