Dior has launched Joy, a new fragrance for women. Joy is fronted by actress Jennifer Lawrence, who starred in a 2015 movie of the same name.
"JOY by Dior expresses this remarkable feeling of joy by offering an olfactive interpretation of light. This perfume resembles certain pointillist paintings that are rich with a precise, yet not too obvious, technique. It is constructed with multiple nuances, a myriad of facets that lead to an expression that is clear and self-evident. Bringing a new Dior perfume to life is an event. For the entire House, as well as for me. It should rally and delight both women and men." — François Demachy
Zested Bergamot and Mandarin explode in unison with flowers. Grasse Rose, in both Essence and Absolute form, as well as heady Jasmine, blend with these delectable fruits in a vibrant smile. Warm and creamy sandalwood embraces us in softness. An intimate signature, the clear and powdery whisper of musks creates a tender and sensual skin-on-skin effect.
Dior Joy is available in 30, 50 and 90 ml Eau de Parfum and in matching body products.

🙂
Such a travesty to use this name for a totally different perfume like this. Fie on LVMH.
It’s pretty egregious given that the Patou is still on the market.
I thought I had read that LVMH had a deal on the table from Jean Patou?? Might not be too bad as there is a megawatt designer still available under the LVMH umbrella.
Yes, word is that they have acquired Patou or are very close to acquiring…that doesn’t really change my opinion that it’s egregious, if anything, it strengthens it 🙂
Ha. I guess I’m more excited about the fashion part since I will likely never smell Joy. Sauvage did me in on any future Dior fragrance.
Yes, and I know nothing about the fashion part!
I find this so shocking too! Like my jaw actually dropped. And that was before I saw the notes!
However, it does make me appreciate this blog, because nowhere else could you say “Dior is putting out a rose jasmine scent… and calling it JOY!” and expect people to know exactly why you were whispering excitedly as if describing an extramarital affair or something.
Ha, so true!
But I will eat my hat if this turns out to be a “rose jasmine” scent in the same way that Patou Joy is a “rose jasmine” scent.
I would agree based on reading the notes, but mentioning Grasse just seems like an egregious hint that they’re straight-up copying.
I don’t think so, Dior mentions Grasse in almost all its perfume advertising, as does Chanel.
No, I’ve heard it’s the usual fruity floral claptrap, nothing like Patou Joy.
First of all, could they not have come up with a name other than JOY? Will Dior no. 5 be next?
Bottle is also underwhelming – considering that this will likely be a massive release and went through years of development. There are some images on instagram already and the bottle looks coated in pink with JOY in clear – it looks cheap.
With their new female creative director and her reliance on the older Dior “codes”, I was hoping for something a bit more timeless.
The bottle is a bit of a shock to me — looks like a toner or mouthwash or something.
I thought it was a toner at first. I also thought it was Cameron Diaz. Then I remembered what year it was ????
There’s Something About Cameron.
Ha!
Maybe the should have called it Miracle Mop if its after the movie she was in!
🙂
???? funny
This cracks me up! ????
white musk?
NEXT!
It looks kind of like they wanted to reuse the Sauvage bottle mold. Pass!!
Exactly!
The notes on this sound like every other perfume on the department store shelf. Honestly, I give up reading them because 90% of the time, they are the same.
The uniformity of modern perfumes is what made me more or less give up on them as an art form. It’s so depressing to see the same thing hit the shelves over and over again, year after year.
And don’t get me started on bottles. That one up there is a travesty, like something they ordered from a catalogue. It honestly makes me sad to see how boring everything’s become.
Agree with everything you said.
Agree with what people have said about the bottle. Very boring and not the type that would make me buy it. The name will likely kill this launch for those in the know.
I sniff this at the airport two hours ago… And honestly can’t remember enough about it to comment usefully. Floral sweet, white musks, generically pink.
sniffed, rather.
Clumsy thumbs.
Thanks for reporting back! How disappointing.
It seems like “joy” is the word du jour, though. This frilly pink optimism of sorts dumped on to female millennials? There’s the Philosophy Live Joyously, Kate Spade TRULYjoyful (sad irony), and Dior’s own J’Adore In Joy.
In any event, the target market has very likely never heard of the Patou or Cameron Diaz, for that matter ????
I think when people go to buy this as a gift, that they will get this Joy, the real Joy, and In Joy mixed up. No one will get what they want for Christmas! Chaos I tell you, CHAOS!
It’s the end of the world as we know it. ????
If female millennials ask for “a bottle of Joy” as a Christmas gift they just might find some dishwashing liquid in their stocking and a very confused boyfriend wondering “why the hell would they want that?”
Ha! Forgot that one????
I find this whole thing to be rather sad. I’ll try it, but I am not optimistic. And I usually am optimistic.
If it has a magnetic cap, I’m in. Magnetic caps can make anything look and feel classy.
Yaaaaawn.
I was so excited waiting for this since Dior released the news like a month or two ago, hoping for an incredible bottle and scent, I haven´t try it yet but the bottle is so very disappointing, the same bottle from the prive line and sauvage but in an even cheaper version, I cannot understand how Dior being a luxury brand representing creativity can release such and ordinary looking perfume… I hope it smells good.
Flankers: Enjoy, Joyful, Joy to the World, Joyride, etc. Can’t you just see it? Then Joyful Night, Joy Elixir, Joy Legere, ad infinitum.
JOY NOIR
Pure Joy, Unbridled Joy, and for men: Joystick.
François Demachy was here in Montréal for the launch and I went to the talk/interview last night. It cost $45 and they didn’t even give us a carded sample, just a sprayed card! (I was glad I didn’t pay to go to the event, received the ticket as a gift from a friend) It smells like a generic but pleasant sweet musky floral scent. I’m sure it will sell well to the general public. No interest from the perfumista perspective. And after all the lovely words about using the finest raw materials etc, it smells like every other recent department store scent that they spent maybe $1 on the formula and the rest on the marketing budget. Dior is cheap, cheap, cheap. Recycled name, recycled smells, I am sure Bernard Arnault is going to be laughing all the way to the bank.
Oh boo hiss! And serious question, is Joy Mangano getting a cut of this? Will this be sold on QVC? And the font really looks the same as Joy. I didn’t know I had any disappointment left, I guess I do. This sort of plagiarism would be such a big lawsuit if the tables were turned.
I have it: it’s Love’s Baby Soft!
