The daily lemming

Posted by Robin on 15 June 2018 17 Comments

Lemmable opaque black packaging for a selection of Serge Lutens fragrances (Fumerie Turque, Tubéreuse Criminelle, Bornéo 1834, Cuir Mauresque, Serge Noire, Louve, Chêne, Fille En Aiguilles, Muscs Koublaï Khan and De Profundis). $375 (!) each for 100 ml at Barneys.

I was ‘all in’ when I saw the bottles, until I saw the price tag! Wow, talk about atmospheric prices!
I think Uncle Serge is losing me – I can’t see paying that price for scents I already own.

The price is a bit of a shocker. He had already lost me, but I do like those bottles.

The 75 ml “bell jars” at Barney’s are $300, so you “save” $25 if my math is correct.

That is true! I paid less than $100 for Chene in an export bottle, so I am just having trouble adjusting to the new reality.

But also, I do not think they are worth this much. I also don’t think fragrances in general are worth this much, and in that sense I am already way out of step with the market.

Thank you for sharing that sentiment, Robin. Still rather new to the fragrance game, but even so I do sometimes feel I’m being played by the marketing and pricing. I remind myself nobody is being forced to wear fragrance. That puts things in perspective for me, and it’s still loads of fun.

And I have been at this fragrance game for a VERY long time and it kills me that what sells for niche could not hold a candle to so many fragrances that sold in drugstores many many years ago for a fraction of the price….even the Chanel exclusives annoy me a bit because back in the day no 22 could be had for a song and bought in a run of the mill department store….I remember the last time I bought it was in the late 90s and I think I paid something like 40 dollars for 1.7 EDT…..

At the very least, I think they play consumers in the sense that people think big money must mean you’re getting a better product. The simple fact is that you’re not, and in this case in particular, Serge fragrances — even the existing ones — have gotten worse as the prices have increased. But Serge is not the worst at this game.

I don’t think we need to adjust…we just don’t need to buy :) (that is me “adjusting” LOL!)

That’s my adjustment too – just say no!

I really want to be upset but I’m still want a bottle of Borneo. I wish the price wouldn’t jump up again but at least the bottle is pretty?

But yes, probably going to wait for my Christmas bonus and then feel guilty through Mardi Gras. :)

I think des esseintes (comment above) is correct that this isn’t really a price jump, or at least, not a recent one.

I am going to buy Borneo, but in the bell jar at French prices (I have a mule). Probably couldn’t bring myself to pay $375 plus tax, even for 100 mls.

I’m off the hook, A la Nuit is not mentioned, the only SL that I’ve really enjoyed wearing. And that reminds me I’ve never sniffed Sarrasins despite loving jasmine so much.

Anyhoo, those bottles are way cool, though I would store them FLAT. Heaven help me if one fell over and shattered.

Just checked the SL website, was curious about the euro price for these. Don’t see them listed though.
