Lazy weekend poll ~ Spring Forward, 2018

Posted by Robin on 10 March 2018 426 Comments

PSA: Don't forget to change your clocks tonight! (Unless you live in a happy place that doesn't bother with daylight savings.) And the swapmeet will be next Saturday.

Today: a repeat of a poll we did last year (and the year before that). As always, answer as many or as few as you like, or just talk about something else. If it's fall where you live, adjust the questions accordingly.

1. What's the fragrance you'd most like to add to your collection this spring?

2. You have to vote one perfume in your collection off the island. Which one will go first, and why?

3. It's time for (fantasy) Spring Break! Where are you going, and pick ONE fragrance to bring with you.

OMG I am the first one :)
    1. Frag to add: the new Neela Vermiere, plus Slumberhouse would be releasing some of the discontinued fragrances.
    2. Vote off the island – that is a long long list!!! Early in my parfumista days I made a mistake of buying fragrances because other people liked them (rather then getting samples:)). But the number 1 to go would be Arquiste L’Etrog – I like it in theory but it does not work on my skin

Do you know if Slumberhouse is bringing back some discontinued frags? I still kick myself that I didn’t pick up a bottle of Pear + Olive when I had the chance :)

Not at this time. You never know with Josh but the speculation on basenotes (and it is usually true) is Brousse and Jeke

Grev is currently available on the slumberhouse site. I believe it’s a re-issue.

Ahhh, spring! I would love to add a bottle of Lostmarc’h Iroaz to my collection (and would have already if I could only find one). Getting voted off the island would be Balenciaga Paris – boring! And fantasy Spring Break … hmmmm. I think I’d choose Lake Como (preferably staying in George Clooney’s guest house), and bring Meditteraneo.

Yeah, me too (sorry, I mean). I liked Paris until I smelled Le Dix, and after that Paris just seemed too simple or something.

I’ve nearly drained my bottle of B. Paris–using nearly exclusively as a room spray! Now it’s almost gone, I can’t decide if I should buy more for that purpose or not. . . It makes the house smell so pretty!

To add to my collection- St. Clair Scents First Cut

To vote off…not sure as the lines are blurred chez Marzipan with regard to which bottles technically belong to me…they float all over the house and everyone (except for Mr CM8) uses them

Fantasy spring break…home with absolutely nothing to do and no one to bother me…and I would be wearing First Cut ;)

Will do! did you ever try the vanilla beans in a carrier oil? or cardamom pods? those work really well too but it takes a while for the oil to absorb the scent….I am marinating more vanilla at the moment but probably won’t use it until the fall…

CM8, you inspired me to marinate a couple of vanilla beans in oil, and it was a great success! I added a few cardamom pods to spice it up, but I’ll use a few more next time. Body oil enabler pin for you! ????

How do you make sure the macerating items (rice, pods, etc.) are clean enough? Or is that not so much of an issue?

You could hypothetically rinse and dry them (notice I used the word hypothetical :) )…poured the rice right into the oil..will report back in a few months….

Going back in time to Positano circa 1960 or so is a long-running fantasy of mine. I’ve had to accept over the years that most of my dream vacations require time-travel. ;) [An Amtrak sleeping car in 2010 turned out to have nothing in common with Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint’s train trip in North By Northwest. Sadly.]

Oh how I love these polls and reading everyone’s responses!

    1. Art Meets Art’s Like a Virgin LE. It is the most lovely orange blossom. I spent last weekend wearing it and trying to decide if I need it or not. I think I do, after all it’s a limited edition. Today I have that on one wrist and Dame Orange Blossom on the other. They are close, and Dame is the same price for twice as much, but the Art Meets Art is just sooo nice. Any other good orange blossom recommendations? Beside Seville a l’aube (that turns into corn tortillas on my skin).

    2. Calvin Klein Reveal. I bought this on first smell when it hit perfume counters which is unusual for me. I wore it religiously through that fall and winter but now either my nose or skin has changed, because it just doesn’t work for me. If anyone is interested in 15 of a 30 ml bottle left, let me know.

    3. Florida. It was my real spring break last year but this year I just couldn’t make it work around my work schedule. I’ll take my new orange blossom perfume.???? madtowncoed is on real spring break this week and he came home yesterday just long enough to gather his camping gear and head out on the road with his buddies towards warmer weather. Of course I got all teary when he left, and I will spend the week trying not to worry.

Happy Saturday all! Hope the sun is also shining where you are!????

Yes, the Dame is $65 for 100 mls vs the same price for 30 mls of the Jo Malone. I haven’t tried that one though, so I will put it on my to try list!

Years ago I also used to wear Pacifica Nerola Orange Blossom which is now discontinued. But that one was 22 dollars for 30mls so it basically comes to the same cost as the Dame. Do give the JM one a try , though.

Corn tortillas! :-) I love them, but I’m happy that’s not what I get when I wear Seville l’aube!

I wish Lush would re-introduce their Orange Blossom, but until they do, I like the 7 Virtues one and the Houbigant (not a soliflore, but very nice and “practically free” at the discounters, using perfume math).

Yves Rocher Neroli! Retails for $72/50 ml but there’s usually a sale going on. Also…I accidentally ended up with two (bought one, then received one as a present), so I’ll be putting one up at the swap meet :) Unless you want orange blossom specifically and not neroli. Is neroli less sweet than OB? I can never keep the differences straight.

My latest Etat Libre from TK Maxx is in the way (Jasmit et Cigarette), the third in three weeks, so I think I’m already over my Spring fragrance allowance limit! I have two that are lanquishing at the bottom of the perfume cupboard, Kenzo Tokyo and Armani He. They’re both almost empty so I should just get them used but there’s always something I’d rather be wearing. As for a spring break, we’re already planning a trip to Corfu at the end of the month and I’ll probably take a little selection of minis or travel sprays (TBC). Someone sent this round at work yesterday and it really tickled me:

I’m in JM Honey & Crocus today, from the splitmeet (thanks, kpaint!).

    1. Gosh, it’s gotten to the saturation point – both at my house, and in the perfume world at large – at which I simply can’t think of one single new perfume that I need.

    2. Yosh Ginger Ciao. I love ginger, and Ginger Ciao does indeed open with it, but it very soon becomes slightly too reminiscent of suntan lotion from my adolescence. Some folks really like that vibe (I’m thinking of Bronze Goddess or Azuree Soleil), but I am not one of them, which is odd, because I also like coconut notes quite a bit.

    3. In my fantasy, I’m not going anywhere, but I can open up the new french doors leading to a backyard that is fully xeriscaped and usable (instead of the randomly planted and ill-maintained junkyard that is its current state). I’m drinking a lovely cup of tea and wearing something that celebrates the very short spring season here in the desert; perhaps Ciel d’Opale.

I find the packaging interesting – it’s soft and understated, which is unusual. This was a blind split, and although it is pretty, there might be too much almond in it. Almond is a tricky note for me – I love it when it veers toward marzipan, but hate it when it slides into Play-doh territory.

Is it veering towards playdoh, Lisa? I am glad to hear that cause it will prevent me from wanting it…I love marzipan too. Lately I have been getting my fix with cheapies…cazaubon recommended Desert Essence Sweet Almond Body Lotion which hits the spot. I also have South of France Almond Gourmande soap which I keep tucked in my drawer to scent my clothes. And I am using Hurraw! Almond lip balm (I also recommend their almond, rose and cardamom lip balm) and Alvera all natural Aloe & Almonds Roll On Deodorant…all items I bought at Vitacost when they were having a massive sale and I got an additional 35 % off on top of it …

It might be a little too much Play-doh for me. It’s not Luctor Et Emergo, but it’s got almonds and that powdery thing going on, as well (the old-purse-that-used-to-hold-lipsticks scent).

Marzipan. So, so yummy when done well (in confections and in perfume).

Xeriscaping is the only landscaping that makes sense in the desert. I have visions of a minimalist back yard that requires almost nothing in the way of maintenance, yet nonetheless looks elegantly groomed. It’s on the big list, somewhere behind dealing with the tile in the kitchen (currently falling off the counter’s edge), and renovating both bathrooms.

I hope you find a way to work towards that goal! When I bought my house, the teeny side “yard” had been used a parking space by the previous owners for at least a decade (and as a trash pit by some owner in the past, as I later learned through excavation). I imaged a private, quiet space outside to enjoy. Three years, a few tons of concrete removed, a few tons of sand and urbanite formed into a patio, and a few thousand dolllars on plantings later, I have a wonderful little outdoor hide-away. It is amazing how restorative it is to spend time out there! Dream big–the results can be very rewarding. :)

    1. I want to add Box of Eels extrait to my collection but keep posting it because I hope to either get it in Duty Free (some airports have Chanel boutiques) or to buy with some deal in a store (or at least in a state without a sales tax), but I don’t get the chance.

    2. I’m not a huge impulse buyer so I don’t have too many perfumes I’d like to part with. One thought was given (not gifted, which is important) to me by a co-worker – Fragonard Belle de nuit (or something like it): it’s nice but I just won’t wear it.

    3. There are many places where I’d like to go but if the limitation is just one perfume, then, without cheating, it should be Hawaii and EL Bronze Goddess: I always take it there with me, and could probably survive just with it there. Alternatively, I could go to London – then I need just one perfume for the road (traditionally – Volutes EdT), and the rest of the visit I’ll manage between all the great perfume shopping places (though it’s cheating :) ).

    1. I plan to add Miller et Bertaux Green, Green, Green, and Green to my collection today. I’m going sniffing with springpansy this afternoon and plan to buy it at the shop! It’s been on my list for so long.
    2. I’ll be voting off a bottle of Kashan Rose at the swap meet next week. It’s really lovely, but I just don’t need it or wear it much.
    3. I’m taking a trip to San Diego in late April, so that will be my spring break. I’ll be going to lots of breweries and eating lots of course. Can anyone recommend perfume shops there? I haven’t seen many mentioned yet in my searching.

    1. A spring incense scent, not sure what, but I’d like to find one! Any recs?

    2. Nothing! I love all I’ve got right now. I’ll need a bigger island, I guess. :)

    3. I’d like to visit the west coast of FL for spring break. Won’t break the bank, and I’ve never experienced the white powder sand and I just want to put my feet in it and swim in the ocean. Nothing fancy. I’d take Juste Un Reve with me.

    SOTD: Seville a l`Aube

Just relaxing today and friends for dinner tonight. Making chicken marbella, an 80s classic I’ve been wanting to try for some time.

OOO and I just thought of another one…the three incense fragrances from Sauf…they are incense-y but also sweet…very nicely done..I think they would be great for the spring….

Cardinal is a light and airy incense to my nose…I wore it several years ago as the season segued from spring to summer…..

I dont know what kind of incense you are looking for, but if you like japanese style incense/woods, this is gorgeous.
It is quite soft (so suitable for warmer temps) but full of character, well balanced and refined.
Its not cheap though. :( (Thats why I dont have it, but I am thinking of ordering a 2nd sample….)

    3. Always happy to head to Hawaii…been too long. But I think a bigger fantasy is somewhere in southern area of Spain or up in Basque area. Why not just being Seville a l’Aube?

Do I need another iris? No – but I still want Masque Milano L’Attesa, or maybe the Bulgari black tea one.

I could say goodbye to the big, newish bottle of Femme, since the vintage mini is both better and will last at least 5 years.

Will have a pretend vacation tomorrow as we a) do have beaches and b) it’ll be sunny and almost warm. Elixer des Merveilles?

They were very different on me. Vanitas was louder, with big fluffy clouds of vanilla and orange blossom. VCA was much quieter and tropical floral like an orchid.

I found them similar as well but the Vanitas has a little more oomph to me. And the VCA is more tropical to my nose as well. I sprayed the VCA liberally too to increase the sillage. ;)

    Happy Saturday!

At the coffee shop, have a huge cafe au (almond) lait and avo toast. Yes, I am a Portland cliche, why do you ask?

    1) I am actually doing my Sprunk Break in L.A. in a week, and look forward to trying the neroli scent from Parfums Nicolai.

    2) I tend share or give scents so none tends stay long enough to be voted off.

    3) While in LA I will be taking a rollerball of Fresh Cream for everyday, and I will have Rose Jam shower gel- perfect.

Let’s drag Brandon Truaxe a tiny bit dis A.M. !
A new fragrance company has been formed under the Deciem umbrella, called Avestan. It will encompass both scented products for body care and candles. Instead of notes, we get the aromachemical designation. Which I find groovy, but for most people it will VERY difficult to see if they like it. Basically Truaxe wants move beyond traditional notes and move into the realm of sense memory. So he wants to take you to an alley in Morroco, evoking African oils and clay pots or to Tibet and feel of winds there.
I get this- I REALLY GET THJS- but sense memory is tricky af and you into the realm of othering, which is NOT GOOD.

Alright, that’s my drag for the day!????????????????????

    1. Not feeling the buy-buy-buy itch at the moment, but I do want to sniff the new Neela Vermeire and Diptyque Tempo.

    2. I’m sure I have a few scents that should get lobbed off my island. Need to go sort thru before next weekend’s swapmeet, eh?

    3. Well I’m just back from the actual Spring Break Wedding In Cancun, and I actually brought VCA California Reverie, Olfactive Studios Still Life In Rio, and Dame Passionfruit Orange Blossom & Vetiver. Yes I know that’s more than one, but this was reality, not fantasy, so I’m allowed :)

My outfit for the wedding was awesome, y’all; total strangers told me so. I wore this dress:
    https://www.google.com/search?q=tracy+reese+dolce+vita+frock&rlz=1C1CHBF_enUS773US773&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjm-dj9quLZAhVQ4WMKHTbmD3MQ7AkIZw&biw=1261&bih=878#imgrc=nyJJv9uLwNnMzM:
with a big black hat (there weren’t any hat rules specified!), big black sunglasses, red bag, and red kitten heel sandals, with chunky red venetian glass and gold wire jewelry that I made a few years back. Just your basic mafia widow vibe :) Hey, it met all of bridezilla’s rules as stated and pleased the heck outta me.

The reception was fun, none of the elders needed hospitalization (that was a serious worry), there were no family fights: success!

Oh, and Hava Nagila performed by a mariachi band is Really Fun.

That is my sense of the bridezilla phenomenon–it is evidence of low self-confidence or some other personal anxiety. We married a month after my brother-in-law did, and they were MUCH more detail-oriented than we were for all sorts of things. They both spent the whole wedding looking worried about something. In comparison, our wedding was really chill. I love my new brother and sister-in-laws, but they’re 10 years younger than we are, and the lack of confidence showed.

I think they get so wrapped up in the idea of making the wedding ‘perfect’ that they forget that the guests aren’t attending in order to see a performance of The Most Awesome Wedding Ever. We’re there to join in the happiness of people we love.

Happy weekend to all brothers and sisters in l’eau. We are having spring forward in Poland 2 weeks after US.
Courtesy of a person in Germany I got samples of three new Hermessence fragrances. I’m wearing Agar Ebene today and oh man, it does smell good! It’s my favorite out of the three and would love at least a small bottle.
    Off to the poll:
    1. Hermes Agar Ebene or NVC Niral
    2. Ann Gerard Rose Cut or Evody Cuir Blanc could go away. Don’t wear them at all.
    3. I would go to Tokyo and Kyoto and take CdG Kyoto with me.

SotD = Eau de Gaga, with a big thank you shout out to the fabulous NSTer who shared it with me via the recent freebiemeet.

I agree with Victoria at BdJ. It’s a great green tea and violet combination. I’m extra happy with EdGG because none of the classic Bvlgari tea scents work for me, and this one perfectly fills that spot in my perfume wardrobe.

    1. This morning I’m lemming after Comme des Garçons Concrete, advertised as an “exploration of destruction, construction and creation” but for me is really a “sweet and creamy, yet industrial-smelling fragrance.” Angela’s NST review is spot on. The flat bottle is uber cool, the fragrance really works for me, but I guess I can console myself thinking that a sample is enough for the moment.

    2. If I have to choose one to go, I would probably say bye-bye to my bottle of Eau de Shalimar. It’s a recent-ish version with a navy blue ribbon around the neck. I like it but I suspect it gives me migraine. I haven’t had the nerve to test it again. And letting it go would free up a space for a different Shalimar.

    3. Longing to visit Japan! I would love to be there during cherry blossom time. An obvious choice for scent would be Geisha Vanilla Hinoki, but if I am limited to one bottle, I would take a cologne, probably Eau de Guerlain. A bit of French cologne would be refreshing and good any time of day. It is fleeting so it would allow me to appreciate the scents of air, water, earth, plants, flowers, food, and people I encounter in my travels.

Robin, hope you are enjoying your visit with your son – if you guys go sniffing let us know what he likes and if you find any goodies!

I bought a coal-tar shampoo for dandruff – it works so well, but is it safe? I don’t know! It does smell like Bulgari Black, I pretend it is the shower gel for this scent, but much less expensive.

I’m off script – but here is my happy accident layering experiment. I wore L’heure Bleu to the theater (by theater, I mean middle school production of The Little Mermaid), forgot about it and sprayed OJ Tolu on top – smelled great!

I’d think the coal tar is safer than the other stuff in the shampoo. JMHO. Glad you found something that works for you! I spent a decade+ (2 decades?) trying to diagnose and fix my itchy, flaky scalp. Turns out what I needed to do was stop using shampoo altogether. (And stop using anything that lathers anywhere on my body, for that matter.)

That’s interesting. What kind of hair do you have? Mine is thinner and straight – so it does tend to get greasy after not washing it for a day.

The dandruff is a more recent phenomenon. But it’s pretty annoying. I Think the coal tar stripped a lot of products out of my hair – I didn’t notice as much dandruff, and my hair was so squeaky clean & shiny

I always guessed that my laziness is probably my best beauty treatment – I just do a lot less- less showers – no fake nails – less hair treatments – less products…

Wearing Eau Lente today, but Eau d’Hiver (if I had it) would be more appropriate, because today is the Day of Great Thaw, or Spring Strikes Back. A warm and sunny day, and all those piles of snow are melting. The streets are covered with slush and water.
I am enjoying Eau Lente. Soft resins and spices (clove! cinnamon!) – yum.

(I think it’s only USA and Canada who change their clocks today. My country will do it at the end of March, for example.)

    2. Vote? My bottle of PdN New York has been sitting waaaay in the back of the closet, unused of late.

    1) I also am not strongly itching for anything right now, perfume-wise. Hoping I can add a few things in the swap meet. I am searching for The Perfect rose candle. Something fresh but not overwhelming and inexpensive.

    2) I did happen to send a few unloved bottles off the island a few weeks ago. I left them in a box outside my apartment, went back in because I forgot something, and they were all gone except one when I came out again about 4 minutes later(Femme). I have more to sort through for the swap meet.
I also just offloaded some samples on my brother who arrived this AM from LA.
    3) Oh, anywhere that isn’t this dirty city, really. A quick getaway to a B&B in Woodstock would suit me just fine right now. I’d bring some earthy scents: Hendley Rosenthal and Lamblack and some Ancient Resins oil.
SOTD is some homemade oil done jjlook style: 2 half ml vintage Diorissimo samples dumped into 5ml of grapeseed oil. Nice!

Cazaubon is right, I intended for them to be taken by anyone. I only saw one older woman with a cart down the block so I assume she took them, but I guess Femme was even too cumin-y for her ???? Though it went eventually.
(Roma, Burberry London and blanking on the others). Some inexpensive perfumes aren’t worth the effort/cost for me to ship. I’ve personally benefited from the “curbside shopping network” so happy to be a contributor.

It’s nice to live in an area where you can just leave stuff out rather than hauling it to the goodwill or a thrift store.

Not so nice when I was moving into an apartment by myself (my one helper cut out early) and went to drag my bed up the stairs only to find someone had taken off with it. Fortunately the thief wasn’t too far away and was willing to give it back.

Robin, i hope you are having a nice catch-up with your son.
The only thing standing between me and spring is winter, and I like winter more than summer because I can wear wool beanies and Sorels which makes me ridiculously happy. I would get rid of Dame New Musk as I find it a bit cloying but mostly I would get rid of Olympic Orchids Bay Rum because I don’t like wearing it. It’s a bit harsh.
I am getting so much pleasure from my local environment at the moment, watching autumn arrive and enjoying the nippy, cool morning air and smells of leaves and fungi …mulchy …and browning ferns and bracken. I am just so lucky to be where I am.
I would like a good leather scent. Wearing smoked ambergris…nice!

    1. Hiram Green Shangri La is at the top of my list at the moment.

How does Equestrian compare to First Cut? They both use hay absolute so i was curious.

Same with me on no 2…we have a FB of it in the house and it does get used from time to time but not by me…it is probably my least favorite of the Dames…

First Cut (based on one test) stayed more floral and honey , whereas Equestrian leans toward the leather, not floral.

I’m not sure what it is with the Dame- I think maybe I sampled only with the dabber and when sprayed it’s just too much peach.

It’s a beautiful morning here after a week of dull grey skies, but there is a definite feel of autumn.
Papillon Perfumes Dryad and Dusita Le Sillage Blanc are fighting for first place on my list. They are both green, but quite different to my nose.
I spend so long agonising over each FB purchase that I don’t dispose of things readily. I did pass on my bottle of Mandragore EdT, it was lovely but too light for my tastes, so maybe I can apply the ‘vote off the island’ test retrospectively.
A spring break that really celebrated spring for me would be a place where there is a huge difference between winter and spring, where deciduous trees suddenly turn green and flowers emerge everywhere. I wouldn’t swap the New Zealand landscape for anything, but the indigenous trees are nearly all evergreen, and don’t change so dramatically with the seasons.

I live in a place where most trees are evergreens and I’ll admit I have little appreciation for them. What I really miss is the summer-fall transition that other regions enjoy. Here it goes from brown and dry to brown and wet. Not exactly inspiring.

It’s trickier than it sounds, and if you’re a makeup wearer, rather essential once one hits middle age. Wearing makeup using products and techniques so that it doesn’t look like you’re wearing makeup.

I didn’t have any crocuses this year :( Oh well. SOTD is Un Jardin Sur le Toit. Trying to decide whether to put my travel spray of this one up for the swapmeet. I think I might. It’s very pretty, but do I need to smell this much like fruit?

    1. New fragrance: Bois des Iles extrait, I think! Or maybe LADDM or Cuir Beluga.

    2. Voting off: VCA First Premier Bouquet and Guerlain AA Tiaré Mimosa (which was my very first bottle of perfume!). They will be up for the swapmeet, I think.

    3. Fantasy spring break: Bora Bora, staying in a cottage on stilts in the water, needing a canoe to go anywhere at all. I’d bring no perfume at all with me–I’ll scent my skin with the salt of the ocean. (I’m going to make this happen someday, mark my words.)

    2. Love, Chloe would go. I keep the bottle cause it’s pretty, but I don’t even display it.
Hmmm, actually I think I will move it from my closet to my display shelf. At least it will get some use that way.
    3. I would go visit my grandpa, and I would bring my daily wear SJP Lovely, so I would get some good memories with him associated in it and i could have them whenever I wear it after the trip.

I have a bottle of LPRN Black Perfecto and a bell jar of Borneo on my shopping list.

My swap list is filled with bottles of oud fragrances, I have completely maxed out on it.

Vacation would be to Guadeloupe with a bottle of Kai.

Today I am wearing my new bottle of Cire Trudon Revolution. I had only tried it from a dabber sample before buying and was a bit put off by the huge gunpowder note from a full spritz, but it is calming down now. I wouldn’t have bought it if I had been able to test it properly first though. :-(. At least the bottle is pretty. I am going to try layering it with some scented oils to soften it up and make it more enjoyable.

Sorry it’s not what you’d hoped ???? Oddly, it went from thinking it would be my least favorite, to being my most worn from the coffret(judging from fluid levels)! I don’t get gunsmoke specifically. It’s more campfire to me with a bit of cool, coniferous green in there somewhere. I can really see myself only wearing it on cold, dry nights though. It was nice layered with Ancient Resins.

It’s pretty good! I also tried it with Tauer Amber Flush oil, Costes massage oil and JPGaultier2 massage oil. So far it works best with the Ancient Resins and the Tauer. The JPG is so strong it overpowers it.

I’m still a little surprised and hesitant, but I think I’m going to splash out for a full bottle of Hermes 24 Rue Fauborg in the next few months. I turn 30 this summer, and it feels like it might be a good (pre)birthday gift.
    2.
My collection is so small, and mostly samples. I’ll just use a few up instead of saving them for some imaginary rainy day.
    3.
I’m going to San Francisco with a bottle of Mirus’ The Elysian Fields, which is a gorgeous herbal green delight.

    1. I have a lot on my wish list, but I’m fairly certain I will pick up No.5 L’eau for spring, or Alien Future Flora. 2. I would vote Gucci by Gucci off the island. I still like it, but it now has a bad association with me, so I can’t wear it. 3. I want someone to come and organize my pile of paperwork, and fill out summer program forms, while I sit on my deck and read. I would wear BlackBerry and Bay. Today my daughter and I went to the Big Sephora here, and I tried the new Tom Ford Soliel Blanc , it smelled good. Beachy, but not overly so.

    SOTD = L’Ambre des Merveilles

I am starting already with the ambers because it is one of my top perfume notes loves. I am also wafting some vanilla from making samples.

I am listening to the radio and keep hearing about this 67 yo woman who was accidentally run over by her husband while she was shoveling snow. They had been married 47 years (!!!, she was only 20). Hug your loved ones.

As to the Poll questions —
    1. I am looking forward to NVC Niral and would not be beyond getting a large sample when it comes out.
    2. Vote off the island. I hate voting FBs off the island…the last one was Caron Parfum Sacre so I will take credit for that here.
    3. I was seriously thinking of doing the long weekend version of Bois de Jasmin’s Art of Perfume Course in Burgundy. I will be bring Chanel No. 5 L’eau as it will stay in the background and likely mix well with whatever we’ll be sniffing in the lecture portion of the course.

I almost immediately regretted my bottle of Parfum Sacre after I bought it–it became all dry ashes on me with a full spritz! Then, this previous fall, when I was feeling unusually low, I found myself reaching for it. The ashes felt appropriately mournful and somehow comfortingly ascetic. Now, I think I have to keep the bottle in case it is needed for future difficult times.

Funny you should mention Paris as I originally thought going there for a few days may satisfy a short vacation itch…and then BdJ’s newest post came through email. I am unlikely to go but it was a nice fantasy anyway. The only turn off for me with the course is that there are extra steps to take to get there…like arranging for a taxi. I am used to just showing up with my luggage and everything else is pre-arranged by someone else already.

    1. What’s the fragrance you’d most like to add to your collection this spring?
31 Rue Cambon edp. I have an edt sample, so not sure they compare but I will buy it soon.

    2. You have to vote one perfume in your collection off the island. Which one will go first, and why?
Two bottles of vintage Poison edt toilette. Not what I remembered – paid too much. Could have bought 31 RC for the price of these. Will be swapped.

    3. It’s time for (fantasy) Spring Break! Where are you going, and pick ONE fragrance to bring with you.
Like Koyel, I’d love to go to Bora Bora. Look at Tahitian pearls, bask in the sun, wear NARS Monoi body glow…drink ????

    (1) Prada Les Infusions de Amande. I’ve been totally obsessed with this fragrance for the past year but unwilling to pay full retail for it. Just last week, though, Fragrancenet offered testers of it, and I was able to snap up two for $55 each. Yay me, and that itch is now officially scratched!
    (2) Fragonard Tilleul Cedrat and D’Orsay Tilleul. What was I thinking?
    (3) I live in southwest Florida and would welcome a trip north to view the spring flowers in April. Anywhere in the southern Appalachians would work for me.

This morning I drained my sample of Arielle Shoshana–split decant on its way. Paid a bunch of bills, and when I went outside to leave the outgoing mail in our mailbox I was hit with wave of the scent of magnolia. We have two magnolia trees in bloom on the side of our house, and even in this cool weather they are wafting something fierce.

Today, I have a 3 PM date with my husband and sons to see Black Panther, and am trying to think of other fun activities with them. My younger son’s orthopedic surgery is on Monday, and we need to move his bed into the living-room to be near our bedroom for when he gets out of the hospital. A rental truck came by yesterday and left a huge “shower chair” (who knew??), a walker, a wheelchair, and a portable commode for him–all of which have to go in our living-room… fun fun fun.

Perfume I wish to vote off the island? Bruno Fazzolari’s Room 237 of course. Interested?

Robin, I am thinking of you with your son home for a week! Enjoy.

Film was really fun. My older son was frustrated that despite the film’s feminism, the Eric Killmonger “abandons” (avoiding spoilers) his girlfriend too easily. For me the film said so many interesting and important things about race and gender, but then somehow wound up underscoring the American fissure between African Americans and Africans (yes, I know that was the POINT, but…) But it is to the film’s credit that it makes us think at all so fun are the characters, special effects, car chases! (yah!!!), costumes, music, etc.

Best wishes for you and your son’s recovery. I imagine you’re stressed out! That equipment isn’t pretty, but hopefully helps make things easier for everyone.

The equipment isn’t pretty, but my son gave his best friend a “tour” of the living room (ie “And here is my commode, tucked between my headboard and the china cabinet…”), which made us all laugh.

The shower chair is HUGE! I can see it, sort of, with a few pillows, making a serviceable seat.

1.) I’m very new to this, but I’d like to get a lily-of-the-valley perfume. Yardley of London has a quite affordable one. Does anyone have suggestions for me of others? I also like fresh citrus fruit scents, and really liked the sample of Eau d’Hadrien I tried. Does anyone have suggestions for perfumes like that, but more affordable? (Or I could just save up for a time for that one. *smiles*)

2.) Don’t have an “off-the-island” perfume, but I tried growing tuberose flowers, and they were too strong and musky for me.

3.) I am currently in Florida, and happy to have missed the last couple of snowstorms that hit southeastern Pennsylvania. I didn’t bring perfumes with me, but have enjoyed using the Bath & Body White Citrus bath products I picked up in some hotel. (lol) It hasn’t been a fantasy dream vacation, but my folks and I have been to some fun tourist attractions and also have had a few days of alternating lying beside a pool and paddling in said pool. I’ll be rather sad to go back where it’s cold, but I planted many flower bulbs late last year and am eager to see those that animals haven’t eaten in bloom.

Thank you, FearsMice! :) I’ll have to keep an eye out for that.

Happy spring to you, too! (Or fall, if you’re in the Southern hemisphere.)

Apparently the little bio in the profile doesn’t show up, so I’ll say here that I was greatly influenced by the gardening book “The Scented Path” by Louise Beebe Wilder (published in the 1930s) and have tried to grow much of what she recommended that was still available, relatively affordable, and hardy in USDA Climate Zone 6b.

So far I’ve tried samples of a number of rose perfumes, and like several. I still like the fragrance of the Damask rose ‘Mme. Zoetmans’ best, though. Now I’m branching out to try other floral perfumes.

The beasties don’t usually eat daffodils, but they love crocuses and tulips. I’ll find out soon if they have a taste for hyacinths.

I like the scents of patchouli and sandalwood, but Mom is not a fan of those. She’s gotten much more sensitive about fragrances in the last few decades. I’ve got to find out what perfumes I particularly like and she’s okay with. :) Must keep the peace in the home. :) I’ll need to find another location besides the house to experiment with scented oils, I know that! :)

    2. The smart choice would be Chanel’s Sycomore EdP because I’ve blown through my sample over summer and I will definitely want it again but…the lemony roses over spicy resinous vanilla of Lubin’s Kismet are currently calling me bad…”Liiiiiillllllibet…..oh….Liiillllllllllllllllllibet!”
    3. I want a spot on ‘Don’t bother me for two weeks and bring me meals and cocktails at regular intervals Island’…I will take a large stack if books and Kismet for company….

    Happy weekend, all!
This morning, my workout scent was Fico di Amalfi. Post-bath, I am sticking with the Italian beach theme, and I’m scented with a mix of leftover scented lotion from our hotel in Sorrento and a few spritzes of Bronze Goddess. I smell like a beach vacation. With the sunny weather today, I can almost believe it’s real.

    1. I tested Slow Dive this week, after many comments here the past few weeks, and I love the honeyed richness of it. It is likely a bottle will somehow appear in my perfume cabinet some time soon. (Unless someone tells me that Luckyscent runs a Mother’s Day special or something that’s worth waiting for and saving some $$$?)

    2. Can I vote my shoebox full of ancient, untested samples off the island?

    3. If I could go without dealing with the actual travel, I’d like to go to someplace tropical for Spring Break. How’s Bora Bora this time of year? I would happily bring my Bronze Goddess body cream as my scent for the week.

    1. No 19 EDT. I don’t know why I don’t already have this.
    2. Narciso Rodriguez For Her. A lovely scent but my nose has changed.
    3. I’d love fantasy spring break in California and Sonoma Scent Studio would still be open so I could buy All The Perfumes. :(

Patchouli, citrus, and tea. For a brief second, it is reminiscent of Portrait of a Lady. But then the citrus and tea come into the picture. Surprisingly good longevity. I loved it at first sniff. ????

I had a great evening with my husband and two of our friends!
Movie (three billboards…), and afterwards: beers and snacks. Perfect.

    1. No plans. I have a wishlist but no urgency to buy.
    2. I wore all of my fb’s at least once last 6 months, so I dont think one needs to be send off.
    3. Any place warm, sunny and quiet, with fresh air, good food, great wine and a spacious bed will do! I’ll be wearing Vetiver blanc by Sultan Pasha.

(As for our Amouage sample project: I’ll report back on our Memoir experience tomorrow or monday!)

SOTD is Elderflower and Gooseberry from a long ago Jo Malone LE collection.

    1. Already purchased my spring wish: Apres L’Ondee. Will I lust for another before May? Probably.
    2. Off the island: It might be Chloe (new formulation). Bought it a few years ago and wore it a lot back then. My tastes have changed though. Smelled it in the wild last week and pulled it out, thinking I could go back to it but I’m losing hope it will work out between us.
    3. Gulf coast of Florida! Will be going in few weeks and I’m so excited! And nervous. But mostly excited!

I’m glad you got that Apres L’Ondee! You’ll smell so wonderful…

I adore the Florida Gulf coast. White sand and warm water are my kinda thing.

I don’t know that Jo Malone scent, but the gooseberries remind me of my mother. She had several gooseberry bushes and made jam and pies — so delicious.

I had a decant of Elderflower and Gooseberry five years ago but I finished it (which means I liked it!) . From that collection Jo Malone recently brought back Ginger Biscuit…bought it for one of the Marzipans to commemorate her 18th bday.

Good evening, everyone! SOTE is Lui, from the splitmeet. This is a shapeshifter. I’ve spritzed it three times today, and it’s a little different in the progression each time. I like it. ????

    1. Nothing is really calling to me right now, but I’ve been enjoying my Iris Rebelle sample a lot. It’s light, but has an earthy feel early in the wear that reminds me of ISM for a moment if I don’t think too hard. Please don’t throw old veggies at me. ???? This would work in the August heat when I’m sick of citrus. Close second would be Infusion de Iris Absolue.
    2. I will need to vote Traversée du Bosphore off the island, again, please no veggies. I don’t really know why this doesn’t work for me. It will be up for swap next weekend, unless someone is interested in wheeling and dealing earlier. ????
    3. Where to go…. Kauai, with a duffle full of shorts, tanks, bathing suits, slippahs and a bottle of 4711. That’s all I’d need.

I just retried Iris Rebelle today, and liked it much more than the first time. Initially, all I smelled was carrots, but today I got more powder and earth. I will have to try it a third time, for sure. Infusion Absolute has been on my list for a long time too.

I’m interested in hearing your reactions to Lui! I had a tiny bit of vintage Lui that I loved, but I think I read that the current Lui is different. I hesitated a bit too long to get in on the splitmeet, but that’s okay, I do have plenty of other perfume to wear… :)

Re #2: TdB didn’t work for me, either (folks can pelt rotten tomatoes at me, too).

I’ll say up front that I’m not good at picking out notes, so I’m hoping others chime in…it starts out with a spicy floral, but that doesn’t last very long. I get clove and vanilla, but not a big, foody vanilla. At one point, I thought I smelled anise.

It’s not gourmand, but there is definite sweetness in the drydown. But it’s not cloying. It’s light in weight, but still comforting. When I resprayed later in the day, I got less spice and more sweet vanilla right off the bat. It’s very easy to wear; skews more feminine than masculine, though. Hope this helps!

I don’t have anything I’m really craving (split meet helped with that) or need to get rid of (again, split meet helped with that), but I’m really thinking hard about vacation–I’d be excited to go to Nicaragua or Mexico or Portugal or England or Greece–those are my top choices at the moment, but Colombia is starting to sound good too. There are too many wonderful places in the world!

Hello everyone. It’s been fun to read everyone’s answers to the three questions. Now, here are mine:
    1. I just bought Opus VIII for $$$ at the Amouage sale on Luckyscent, so I don’t have any new “must-haves”. I did request a few samples and so I have those to look forward to.
    2. I’ve got some mainstream perfumes that I ought to pass along somehow: Armani Mania, D&G The One, and several others. I may put some into the Swapmeet or might pass them along to some graduate students who are planning a clothes swap soon–I’ve already said I’ll donate some gently used clothes. Maybe they’d enjoy some perfumes too.
    3. I have an odd answer to this one. I’m already at the beach in Galveston which is the local big spring break destination. But I come here every weekend and it’s not much of a thrill. I’d love to go on a boat tour of Norway and Iceland! Yes, right now–I met some people at the Houston Science Museum on Thursday night at an exhibit opening party who were about to leave (today in fact) for this trip, in order to see Northern Lights. Would love to go along!

Ha! It usually doesn’t happen like that, hence the surprise and blaming the barometric pressure. Like you, he does most of the cooking and shopping.

    Amber is In.the.House!

    SOTD = Arabian Oud Kalemat

My eyes rolled to the back of my head. That’s all.

Speaking of Arabian Oud, who had been to Arabian Oud at Times Square lately? I was there probably over a year ago.

Oh, question for you. One of my maybe early birthday presents to my self might be Iris Nazerena ( it’s a long shot ) but i see Barneys has it. Is there some sort of special coming up if you purchase from them?

Barney’s has a “special” now: if you spend $200, you’ll get their beauty bag (a lot of different samples and minis) https://www.barneys.com/category/beauty/gift-with-purchase/N-npbtdh but it ends tomorrow.

There will also be a gift card event in April, not sure when. You would get a $50 gift card to spend later if you bought the Aedes.

Thanks to Undina for answering you question. If you end up deciding to get Cuir Impertinent instead, Nordstrom is having a Fragrance Event coming up shortly – you get a goodie bag of perfumes and 1 or 2 perfume minis.

Ok- I have 3 for #1: SL Encens et Lavande which is inevitable, MP&G’s Ambre Precieux as it is the perfect one for me, and Mona D’Oro’s Lux.
    2. Would be D&G’s Light Blue, dadly outgrown
    3) Italy, warm heavenly perfection

    1) I pretty much want everything. ???? However, I’d settle for a a large decant of Rose de Siwa and a FB of Mohur extrait. I would also like to try a sample of She by HoM. I saw a You Tube review and I am curious. Also a sample of the new Neela Vermiere.
    2) I have several that I like but don’t wear anymore. The most obvious is probably Ligea La Sirena. I used to love it and now I find it a lesser version of Shalimar.
    3) I’d go to Italy with AngelaB.
I hope she doesn’t mind. ???? I would stop in Paris on the way home for some perfume shopping so I would just bring a few small decants.

    1) This time of year I always start obsessing over the perfect violet. Right now I want a bottle of Meteorites.

    2) Marni Rose and Marni Spice. I bought them because I liked them and they were cheap. But I go back & forth between like and dislike with both. I’ve decided to give them another chance this summer, then make up my mind.

    3) It’s been so many years (seriously, like 10) since my H & I had a proper vacation (ALONE), that I’d go anywhere right now. Across town to an empty house would even do it. *sigh*

Thank you all so much for the congratulatory wishes! I was excited to call my family members and close friends but I was almost just as excited to share with you all. I love this little corner of the internet soooo much!

I’m in Tocca Colette to travel today. It’s perfectly unobtrusive I think. I’m a little sad to be trading 80 degree beaches for snowy mountains but it’s been a great weekend, so I’m not going to complain!

    1) I’ve had the most wonderful Mother’s Day today, home made cards, flowers, handmade bouquet of scented spring flowers from church this morning that the children made at school, and a bottle of Ormonde Jayne Ta’if, which I have been longing for, for such a long time, so that’s my no. 1 for spring!
    2) Gucci by Gucci, I bought it blind, and it makes me feel queasy.
    3) I would love to go on a child free city break to Istanbul, discover the culture, wander around and take a boat trip on the Bosphorus.

What a fun poll! SOTD is Ambre Cashmere Intense, thanks to Ann for sending me a fun sample pack!!
    1. Fragrance to buy: I’m still sampling a lot but there are several fragrances I’d like to try (maybe at the swap meet), for example saffron troubulant (spelling! sorry) and also cap neroli.
    2. Kelly Caleche will likely appear at the swap meet. It’s just fine, but I don’t really feel it.
    3. I am actually on spring break this week, but the kids are not – but in years past, when they were smaller, we often went to Disneyland during this week. IF the parks were empty, that would be a dream spring break, and I’d bring a fun fragrance (Arielle Shoshana maybe? Or just eau chic.)
    Happy Sunday!

Great topic! Bumping this a little late, as it has been (mostly) a working weekend…
    1. Kind of a cheat, but I am going to use something I just received rather than something I am just considering, especially since I am still wrapping my head around it. I recently ordered an 8OZ splash bottle of Grey Flannel, the first fragrance I ever purchased for myself in the 1980’s. I had tried it a few years ago in the spray, and been very disappointed with what seemed like a thin and synthetic reformulation. Either my nose has matured, something in the composition has changed, or the splash delivery is just a more gracious way to experience this fragrance, but I am really impressed with it now. Lightly applied, it is a stimulating and uplifting work scent, and just the thing for the chilly pre-spring west coast weather.
    2. & 3. I also recently received a generous decant of what I think is the newest formulation of Kouros. Good Lord, this is supposed to be the ‘neutered’ version???… I am actually not going near it until spring break (I am a teacher, so this spring break thing is not a fantasy, thankfully.) The sprayer nozzle really does smell overpoweringly of a dirty urinal. I am assuming some kind of wonderful alchemy will be forthcoming once it hits my skin (wildflowers, white incense, et al.)… If so, it may be just the thing for a memorable if slightly pagan Easter; if not, it may be voted off the island and into the darkest recesses of the sock drawer.

Late participation.. I had a working weekend (and see working weekends in the near future..gah) but now that i have to start my workweek I am too dazed from the daylight saving adjustment.

    1. I want to purchase Diptyque Fleur de Peau. Preferably a 10ml. It is absolutely lovely, but I avoid full bottles whenever possible now.

    2. I have some easy pics.. Chloe and Bobbi Brown scents from my earlyish perfume days that i never wear.

    3. I want to go to the Seychelles and do a whole lot of nothing. I don’t know what to bring – maybe Diptyque Florabellio, with its odd but delectable saltiness.

1.Next purchased …. I have several on my wish list but Maison Martin Magiela across sand is currently very high on my wish list
    2. Off the island a toss between Bvlgary perfume de the au the rouge Lovely but longevity sucks or Stella Sheer (LE from 2006 i think) again longevity sucks
    3. Perfect vacation will be Germany and Russia Moscow and St-Petersbourg (I know weird but I study history and my speciality was 2nd world war soooo) and the perfume I will bring is Serge Lutens Cedre (boozy and woody goes with both countries! LOL)
