Hump Day, and Piet Mondrian's birthday. What fragrance are you wearing?
I'm in The Different Company De Bachmakov, which smells to me exactly what it looks like outside my window today. (Winter Storm Quinn, so far, is relatively subdued here but we do have a dusting of snow.)
Reminder: on 3/9, we're doing Is it real, or is it Memorex?... wear a fragrance that photorealistically duplicates the smell of something else. Suggested by Jalapeno.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
Note: image is detail from Piet Mondrian's Passion Flower, Circa 1901-1908. watercolor and black chalk on paper, via Wikimedia Commons, public domain.
I’m in Demeter Licorice, which is not quite as scarily accurate as SL Fourreau Noir — it flirts with Twizzlers syntheticness and has an inappropriate vanilla undertone — but it’s very nice and so so much less expensive.
I love Twizzlers…
Today is the last of a breed sample of La Tuilpe. Nice and spring like at first but fades pretty quickly on me. If I were to buy one that fades quickly I would go for the lovely Hermes Rose Ikebana. Alas, buying is on hold as I just signed on the line for a new car. Buying certified pre-owned last time was a joke of about $3ooo in repairs every few months for the last 4 years. The new car could double as mission control I think. Wow! So I have l’eau de new car smell to comfort me.
Breyado (spelling and spell check!?)
L’eau de new car smell, is very luxurious! Lol. . nothing smells better than knowing your car is under warranty. Congratulations on your purchase!
yes safety/reliability has a new level of importance for me these days.
Congrats and hope it’s a winner! We may be in that boat soon. Our car is kind of touch n go.
my condolences
Byredo La Tulipe? I still haven’t smelled that one.
Congrats on the new car! I have been pretty lucky with certified pre-owned (the last, and only, new car I’ve ever bought was a 1995 Saturn), but it might just be that, luck.
I had friends who had good luck so I tried it and it was a bad exp. My father a mechanic recently died and I do not have him for advice so I went new. He lived out of state and could not do repairs for me.
I like La Tulipe and cannot complain about the longevity. Until recently I thought of it as a Spring perfume but last year I happened to wear it in hot weather and was surprised how nicely it developed.
Congratulations on the new car!
I always thought that those certified pre-owned cars came with the warranty from the dealership that certified them – was I too naive?
It depends on how much of the original warranty is left. I had to buy a pre owned car last year, and it only had a years warranty left on it. They do offer extended warranties, that get billed into your pmt, which is what I did.
Congrats on the new car! ????
First Cut… trying to channel summer in the glorious bergamot, lavender, mimosa and honeyed hay.. this might be my holy Grail…
house?
St Clair Scents
thanks
You are working hard for that enabler pin. 🙂
I think of you every time I wear it ????
Fragrance Twin! First Cut is wonderful, and makes me dream of golden hues and summer breeze. I am so glad NSTers introduced this house 😀
You smell great twin
and since I was the NSTer that first spoke about the house I am accepting my enabler pin from you-LOL!
Do you find First Cut similar to Hermes Gentiante Blanche? I was curious myself when you first posed that question…..
I admire your persistence! 🙂 Let’s see how many people you convert before your sample is done (or is it a bottle already despite a “no-buy”? 😉 ).
LOL! The younger marzipans are saving their pennies ….an early birthday present for me 🙂
Which also means I do not need to report it to Donatella, right?
Nope, I think that B-day gifts are exempt.
I am in my latest obsession BdR by Guerlain
There is not much happening here (yet) as far as snow…some rain here and there..
Listening to the Gipsy Kings and sipping a Matcha latte
Twins (scent-wise – I’m drinking coffee and enjoying the silence :))
Hey Twin
How do you find BdR?
I’m enjoying it – I’m not a big fruit fan, but I like plum notes. Also, it’s just right for March weather in the desert (cool in the mornings/evenings but warm in the afternoon).
wow the weather and your fragrance sound like a great pairing…
SOTD is Queen. Been a while since I wore it. Too long as a matter of fact, because it smells better than I remember.
Sorry for all you peeps having to deal with winter weather drama. It’s quite temperate here, so even though the sun is not cooperating today, I won’t complain.
Oops! Booboo! What was supposed to go here is: l love the gypsy kings! BdR, not so much.
What you favorite song by the GK?
Bamboleo!
Just like my little ones!
I’ve been tracking my wears since the beginning of the year and Queen is #1 thus far. I love it and crave it a lot.
and such an affordable beauty 🙂
Work has been too busy to post but I am on a mission to take back some of my life! I am going OUT to lunch today! SOTD is Volnay Brume d’Hiver, which works with this sunny / rainy / snowy combo thing we have happening out there today. I have been pulling out old scents that I once OBESSED over and now merely like. Maybe that would make a good community project? I have found that sometimes it’s due to a new note or genre and once I have really explored that attribute, the obsession fades.
Great idea!!
Enjoy your lunch!
Take back some of your life!! Do it!
Nice, added to list!
No scent yet, but I love the Piet Mondrian painting Robin! She looks like she is in a fragrant trance.
Isn’t that fantastic? And I had never seen it before today.
It’s wonderful! I might want to get a print for my bedroom or bath
Carner Barcelona Palo Santo. It doesn’t smell like photorealistic palo santo wood, but it smells like a nice sweet wood composition.
You are deliciously cozy today
Paprika Brasil for me. One of my favorite Hermessences, with incredible sillage and lasting power. That paprika top note, too, really sends me. I wish more people used that note!
You smell great!
Thank you!
I’m in Jour d’Hermes today – I think our day might match it. Mostly clear with light clouds, and a high of close to 60. Spring!
I adore Jour! I prefer Absolue to the regular, but I’m obsessed with the parfum! So rich and perfect. I own all 3 versions. Still haven’t tried Gardenia though.
Ohhh, I haven’t tried the parfum and now think I NEEEEEED to! I tried the Absolue once and got a melon note that I didn’t care for – do you notice that, or is it just me?
It’s a dangerous game, trying parfum! I don’t get a melon note, honestly, but a touch of raspberry up top. Who knows. 🙂
I love the Gardenia (as well as the original.)
You smell lovely Sheri!
Definitely springy – I’m in Vetiver Pour Elle to celebrate similar weather here!
SOTD is Diptyque Une Rose, a nice, wind blown spring rose. ????
Breakfast is bagel and cream cheese with Taylor’s Scottish breakfast tea.
Weathers here is 53 degrees, clear, cloudless crisp day. I’m hoping those in the northeast are staying safe and warm!
Bagel sound so yummy..
House cousins in L’ombre dans L’eau 🙂
In 1942 Patchouli Nobile from the splitmeet (thanks KPaint!)
A very nice sweet-woody patchouli. I do not get the any incense and I was concerned once again that the sandalwood was going to show up pretty strong, but so far it is in the background behaving properly. It has a very good sillage and longevity. 1 to 2 sprays are more than enough.
No storm here yet. Just some light rain. I am hoping it stays like that for the rest of the day…
I was expecting a winter wonderland when I woke up this morning..
Come to my house
Me too! So surprised and happy nothing was happening!
Fingers crossed!
A sweet-woody patch sounds great for this time of year!
Last night the weather report said I would get a trace of snow overnight. I woke up to 3 inches and it’s still snowing. I’m wearing the dregs of Wonder Bouquet on one hand, and Feve on the other. I’m still trying to pick a birthday present for myself in June. If anyone has ideas about what I should get, please let me know! I will be washing these off, and switching to something Chanel, I think. Going to the cardiologist today, so maybe No.19 as usual, unfortunately, wishing everyone safe from mother nature!
Hope your doctor’s appointment goes fine Lillyjo.
You smell great in No.19!
Thanks, It should be ok. I’m fortunate to have a super nice Doctor, who doesn’t rush me when I ask questions.
I vote for Fève! Hope all goes well.
Thanks for the vote! The new Lancomes Robin put up, look pretty nice. I’m open to all suggestions.
You smell wonderful! Have a productive appointment with your doctor!
I wouldn’t recommend buying anything super-new just because it’s new. Also, by thinking about buying something you haven’t even tried, you start conditioning yourself into buying it on impulse, which doesn’t always work out. In my opinion, Birthday perfumes are something to enjoy for years to come but not just a way to excuse for yourself a purchase you feel you shouldn’t have done or scratch a passing lemming. If you’re choosing between several bottles you loved, ask us, and we’ll help you to find reasons for the choice you’ll make. But If there is nothing you really want to get, don’t buy anything and just put some money aside for a “birthday perfume TBD”: you’ll be happier when you can buy what you really liked with those money.
I agree…two years ago my childhood best friend gave me a gift certificate for my birthday…I did not use it for perfume right away but when I did I bought a bottle of Assam of India and then wore it for seven weeks straight on a daily basis…every time I see that bottle I think of my friend 🙂
I know you are right. To be honest, I have been in love with Cuir Impertinent for a few years now, and that is my first choice. It’s so overwhelming sometimes wondering what else is out there, and then I start second guessing myself.
If the Cuir Impertinent is moving you, that is the one you ought to get.
Is it real, or is it Memorex?
Is it Annick Goutal Rose Splendide, or am I once again 8 years old, spending a week in a cabin in Cape Cod with 4 other families, walking down the sandy road and stopping to smell the beach roses as we head down to the ocean?
That’s an awesome smell memory!
Thanks! I’ve absolutely no idea if this is at all what Goutal was going for – it’s certainly not reflected in the listed notes – but to me it’s exactly like these https://www.google.com/search?q=cape+cod+beach+rose&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjK9uWWwtrZAhUKMd8KHSCWC6cQ_AUICigB&biw=1310&bih=650
Those are so beautiful!
Love your description! I’ve only tried Rose Absolue. I think I need to try Splendide, too.
I don’t remember if I’ve tried perfume you’re wearing but I love your memory description.
Beautiful pictures of beach roses. Thanks for the link.
After sticking with roses all of last month, I’m enjoying wearing whatever catches my fancy this week. Today it’s Baiser de Russie from the splitmeet. I like it – it’s a little fruitier than I tend to prefer, but it feels just right for early spring.
After wearing a month of iris perfumes,. I’m doing the same thing. Just wearing whatever catches my attention. Though I’ll probably wear amber perfumes all next week for the community project.
We’re free!
I’m doing the same though I think I miss the structure 🙂 I usually do not do the community projects during the week, I participate on Fridays, but amber week might be what I need since I, again, haven’t got to wear my favorite ambers during this warm winter (where I live; I’m aware of the weather conditions everywhere else).
Robin, so nice that you picked one of Mondriaans lesser known figurative paintings!
This morning I wore Vitrum by Sammarco and I visited my nephew, such a joyful moment.
My 1 ml of Thebes G1 from Sultan Pasha Attars also arrived this week, and I am wearing it now. I already drained two samples of it (that is for me a sign to order some more) and I keep being amazed at how complex and beautiful it is.
And I tried FlowerBombNectar this week (Why do I even keep trying those designer scent flankers?). I suddenly had a vision of my dentist drilling a hole in my tooth.
Yeah it was superdupermega sweet and cloying, with huge sillage and enormous staying power. Of course. I threw the sample away, wrapped in a plastic bag. Just to be sure.
Where do you purchase the Sultan Pasha attars – on eBay?
Yes on eBay!
Sultan sells them himself there, he uses the name ‘scents rarity’
https://www.ebay.com/usr/scents-rarity/
A few times a year he offers sample sets. So if you are interested, turn on an eBay alert, or join the sultan pasha facebook group (you need approval from an admin to join, but most of the time its arranged within a day).
Dont expect a service like with a normal online shop. He ships worldwide though.
He does everything by himself, sometimes it takes a few weeks for an order to reach me. But if you dont mind waiting, and you are looking for fragrances that are rich and complex, i really recommend you to check it out.
(No affiliation, i am just a happy admirer of this brand/perfumer)
Thanks!
Have you tried Al Lail? I’m curious about it, but tropical flowers are tricky for me – sounds great tho
Yes, almost two years ago. Cant exactly remember the details, but it was a very nice, jasmine with animalic/musky (not clean musk) vibe. At that time I had just ordered a bottle of Sarrasins, so my jasmine craving was temporarily fulfilled (….and my wallet empty haha).
His supply changes over time.
Sometimes he cant make a new batch because the absolutes/resources he uses are out of stock.
I havent seen Al Lail on his ebay page for a while….
He’s a lovely person. I ordered a sample set and a small bottle of Recine Preciux from his eBay site when Kafkaesque ran the reviews. I just couldn’t figure out how much to use – but it was fun to try them.
I use the paperclip method. Dip a paperclip in the attar, and smear tiny drop on skin.
Repeat this one tot three times (depending on the strength of the attar).
…and thats why 1 ml lasts me quite some time 😉
Glad you like it — I had fun looking at paintings last night 🙂
I am in Kerosene Black Vines, which smells like a liquorice tea to me (and liquorice sweets too, but based on my memories it seems closer to tea). A very fun fragrance.
Thank you, Robin, for recommending this scent. I hope the weather improves soon for you.
Oh, so glad you are finding it fun!
Weather could be way worse…looks like we may avoid the worst of this storm.
Aroma M Geisha Blanche since I wore it last night after a shower. Photo realism: Dove soap? The effect is supposed to be steamy spa bath, complete with fluffy white robe. There’s a bit of fruitiness from lychee and citrus in the top notes followed by finely milled soap. Maybe a bit White Linen-ish? Anyway, I certainly smell clean.
Wearing SJP Lovely as a low-key office scent, but also a small dab of Vero’s Rubj Extrait. It’s just sooooo gorgeous (no cumin here)! Still not my true orange blossom HG, but a happy scent none the less.
It is so much cumin on me! Or something.
Good morning, all! We’re having the most beautiful spring weather here now with azaleas and redbuds and pear trees all blossoming while the live oaks get their new pale green leaves. It’s a magical time of year that will probably last one week before hot humid Houston summer sets in. Today I’m wearing FM Lipstick Rose, and it really does smell like lipstick!
We’re both in roses! Enjoy the beautiful day. ????
I was reading about Cheniers the other week ( in relation to the Louisiana to Galveston coastal area ) and saw lots of references to live oaks . I was so curious about how they grow in the sediment on the shell ridges. Kate Chopin called them water oaks, I think. We are beginning to get the real autumn smells of falling leaves and crisp mornings.
I wish we already had blossoms here, but most years the first ones turn up around end of March.
Re: Memorex
I grew up with cassettes (first one I bought was from Madonna or George michael, so yes I am THAT old 😉
Maybe Memorex was aimed more at a USA or (if it was expensive) an audience with more money.
I had cassettes from TDK, Sony, BASF, Philips….
TDK, Sony, BASF, Philips…. Wow… Your memory is great for such an old lady ;-p. I’m not sure I would have thought of the last too had you asked me. Good times… 🙂
Yeah good times!
Philips is a Dutch brand, so it widely available here. I used those cassettes well into the early 90s. I borrowed cds from the library and copied them to cassettes. Dozens and dozens…i mostly bought the cassettes i could get a a good deal on, so I had all those brands in my collection.
Oh and I even designed my own cassette covers for a most of those copies….(i was a teenager…so i still had time for a hobby like that haha. Yeah those were really good times ????
Am starting in sample of Loree Rodkin Gothic I which is sweetish boozy vanilla. I’m getting no patch. I like it so far. Mostly I’m impressed that she can get those prices for her jewelry. I must not be the right target market.
I like Gothic I but Gothic II really rocked my boat more.
Wearing Coco Chanel edp, and sadly it is Memorex–Recalls the outlines and blurry angles of the scent I wore in the 1990s when I was falling in love with the man who was to become my husband, the joy of living in Manhattan, loving my job clomping about the UN in heels and a nice suit feeling like I was making a difference… but it is not the same scent. There is a close association, but not the real deal. It is Memorex.
that is some memory!!!
Wow. Clomping around the UN in heels and a nice suit? Sounds like a memorable time! Thanks for sharing!
It sounds sad. But I hope that the other outcomes of those memories are “the real thing.”
My only Coco experience is a bottle from around 2011-12, so I don’t know how far it is from the original. But I think it’s beautiful every time I wear it.
Love this.
Just getting organised for my visit to my brother near Tampa – leaving at stupid o’clock on Sun – have my charity shop stint tomorrow so it’s Promenade In The Gardens for that, then will take Privet Bloom with me for trip. Hoping to meet up with the lovely Rob Akins (Uncommon Finds in Tampa) for a personal consultation & potential purchase(s) but if it’s not feasible then it’ll be Nordstrom, Saks & Sephora, plus Duty Free on the way home (not that I’m ever overly impressed by DF options!). Perhaps I’ll discover something completely different that’s not ‘high street’ nor available here in the UK – one can but hope…
What a fun visit you have planned! Look forward hearing about your Uncommon Finds/Akins consultation.
I will definitely post about it on here if it goes ahead.
Enjoy your trip!
Many thanks.
Not sure, but think I read Uncommon Goods is no more. Check b fore you head there. Neiman Marcus has a fairly large perfume area too. Have fun. The weather is supposed to be beautiful next week!
Many thanks for the info, Laura – think Uncommon Goods is a different business? Uncommon Finds certainly does not have a shop any more (I missed out while visiting my brother last year also as it was moving locations, old one was closed & new one hadn’t opened at that point!) as their move to what I believe is an upmarket shopping area wasn’t sustainable, but the business owner does personal consultations & still runs the business online.
Sorry, I meant Uncommon Finds!????
No worries, Laura. My consultation is next Thursday, so really looking forward to it. Have persuaded my brother to drop me off as opposed to accompany me to actual meeting, as (a) he’d be bored & (b) I don’t want to look at him thinking he’s mentally tutting, sighing & drumming his fingers on any available surface because he IS bored!
Mondrian”s abstracts are some of my favourite works of art!!!
I am in Santa Maria Novella’s Acqua di Cuba – Straight up lemon Halls cough drops !!!
That sounds good to me!
The NYT has a interview with Sharon Stone on her beauty routine that includes her perfume choices: Chanel No. 5, Kai, and Blumarine Dange-Rose.
Has anyone tried Dange-Rose?
I think there is some good practical advice on products and techniques in the article, but the photo is a bit NSF:
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/03/06/style/sharon-stone-beauty-regimen.html?mabReward=ART_CB2&recid=11VGuyGtmKR307bQxLuOvwNSfPn&recp=0&moduleDetail=recommendations-0&action=click&contentCollection=Politics®ion=Footer&module=WhatsNext&version=WhatsNext&contentID=WhatsNext&src=recg&pgtype=article
That’s a nice read.
Most of these articles seem to me like PR-firm generated product placements, but I feel this one actually conveys her practical choices based on experience.
I’m definitely going to try the Anastasia Beverly Hills liquid lipstick that she recommends because their brow products have the most natural colors (and a choice of pencil, powder, or gel).
Yeah, those sort of articles almost never read like “real” comments from someone. But this does!
Yeah, I really didn’t need to see that picture, since I just squeezed myself into jeans and realized how much weight this winter gave me☺
Right there with you, lillyjo!
I love her haircut and color. It looks chic and windswept and I think short hair is so cool if you spend the time to style it and keep up with cutting etc. (have a hard time believing she does it herself, though)
???? Love that she cuts her own hair
Yes, with the caveat that that approach of holding it up and cutting it off works on very few people.
Yes – I think shorter haircut – and blonder hair with many different shades going on hides the lack of precision – but if it works I am all for cutting corners
Agree!
I will read the article – thank you. And I rather like the actress. And think that she looks good for any age. But I find this picture distasteful and pitiful: many of us are scared of getting older and try to prolong staying youthful and attractive, but what might look OK for a 25 y.o. model or actress, when coming from a 60 y.o. “grandma” that public “look at me! I’m still sexy!” seems desperate.
I find the title gratuitously insulting, too. It’s sort of a mystery why I clicked on it — maybe a vague feeling that she’s more than a pretty face.
I tried to reply to Undina but I messed up. My comment tacked onto Barq’s post below.
I don’t get the hype behind Kai. And completely agree with Undina. She’s a beautiful woman but she could have gone with a more elegant look and pose. It does feel desperate.
I know it’s not a masterful perfume, but I really enjoy Kai when I’m in the mood for a floral that just smells like real flowers.
I’m wary of that Blumarine, though…
Wearing Alaia today, which was a nice surprise from two Swapmeets ago. It has an interesting freshness that doesn’t smell like anything else I have — well, at least since I used up that little decant of De Bachmakov a few years ago. Thanks for the reminder.
Swapmeets are the best
Agreed!
I caught a glance of my Alaia bottle the other day while looking for something else, and realized I’d completely forgotten about it! I haven’t worn it in ages. I should probably pull it out, eh?
You smell delightful!
I am wearing Chanel No. 5 EDP and I am drinking a cup of red zinger tea.
Happy morning so far. My son called me on his way to work earlier, and I love that he took time to do that. It made my morning 🙂
Oh yay! How nice, a great way to start the day!
So important to remember our parents! Realized the other day when chatting with mom & dad that although they have full lives, they also are retired and so have lots and lots of time. I probably could reach out a bit more often and just say a quick hello, doesn’t have to be a long call. Glad your son thought to do this.
Do you think her pose had something to do with her movie Basic Instinct? Just curious if anyone else thought her pose may have been a reference to that movie? Particularly the scene where the police are questioning her about the murder…
Either way, I agree. The pose is tacky and so is that outfit she’s wearing.
Oops. This was meant for Undina… Sorry Barqs!
I bet you’re right, Petunia. But there she looked in control, and here she looks vulnerable.
I’m in Sacrebleu Intense because it arrived yesterday afternoon. I love it – but 4 sprays are probably 2 too many! (I’m still willing to split off 10ml if anyone is interested because a little seems to go a loooong way with this one).
Hopefully, it will have faded a little by the time I have a work lunch. I also got the eau fraiche set, of which I’m keeping the chic and the mixte – chic was a blind buy, and it was a good one! It’s minty and reminds me a little of herba fresca, but with more staying power and a lovelier drydown.
The bottles are also really nice and sturdy, ditto for the boxes.
I bought the small bottle of Sacrebleu Intense before Christmas. I agree 2 sprays is plenty- it packs some punch and does actually last on my skin. If I didn’t already have a bottle I would take you up on the split!9
I…. shouldn’t do this but I’m going to go for your split offer on the Sacrebleu if still available! I have decided that “more is more” and so your statement of 4 vs 2 sprays did me in. I am findable at: jane period smitty (which is at juno period calm — I hope that’s not too cryptic!)
I feel a bit silly for asking, but….
Can someone please explain what Memorex is or means? Thank you!
It was a cassette tape brand.
Here’s the commercial:
https://youtu.be/omifUXvTlyU
Ok, ignore that last video. Wrong one.
https://youtu.be/lhfugTnXJV4
Ah I get it now! Thank you Elisa P!
I googled the name of course, but lazy me only saw they made cds and gave up (probably too soon) so i could not figure out the connection to the theme of wearing something photorealistic. But this commercial says it all.????
Ha ha, you must be on the young side! For those of us of a certain age, their ads are imprinted in our brains. I think they had the one ad where the soprano singing would break a glass, and it did so even on the taped version, hence the question, “Is it live, or is it Memorex?”
Ah, I see that’s in the video link above!
You’re welcome. It was a fun excuse to watch that. Yeah, I think it’s a generational cultural reference so you had to have been old-enough-to-remember late 70s (?), 80s. Not sure if it was strictly an American ad.
I had to google it too. We didn’t get those ads down here
Oh, so sorry I did not explain it in the project description! I should have known it was not worldwide.
I am old enough to remember early 80s but my guess is that Memorex was aimed more at USA market…
Maybe the guy’s British accent threw me off, lol.
I decided to finish off my sample of The Red by The Sum so I can wear some of my cold weather scents before winter is over. I do really like this one, but I probably don’t need a bottle because I have many other spicy orientals.
There are a few winter perfumes (decants) I really need to finish off stat. They’re not going to make it through 3 seasons without (more) serious evaporation.
I hear you there! Decant evaporation ????
I got my second Scentbird delivery yesterday, a bit late, so I’m wearing it today. It is Carner Barcelona Tardes. I like it, but it reminds me of another scent, and I can’t put my finger on which one.
If you figure it out, do tell. I like Tardes a lot.
I am wearing literally six sprays of Sycomore today and I smell SO. GOOD. “I have half a dozen vetiver scents,” I thought. “Do I REALLY need to buy another one?” The logical answer would be no, but I do so love Sycomore. So much. So I might have to.
I see Donatella will come by on 3 April. This is BEFORE I go to Paris. This is GREAT. I will have fewer things to confess. Maybe I should pull a hajusuuri and donate $2 for every $1 I spend on perfume. All right, let’s do this.
???????????????????????? do it, do it!
You smell great!
I love and like lots of vetivers, but Sycomore is something special.
Agreed!
I almost went with Sycomore today. It’s a beauty.
My next vetiver purchase will be Vetiver Tonka. 🙂
Oh excellent choice. I’ve got a travel spray of that that makes me very happy 🙂 not only is it an exquisite scent, but it was a present from my best friend!
Very nice gift. The travel spray is the size I’m after too.
You might want to first try Diptyque’s Vetyverio Eau de Parfum in a sniff-off with the Sycomore, as there were similarities and there is doubtless a big difference in price. ..
Thanks for the tip! Will have to sniff. I’m surprised that I still haven’t gotten around to it, actually.
Agree that you are smelling SO. GOOD! Have you tried the EdP versus EdT for Sycomore?
I have, and I like it very much! I never got to sniff them side by side, so I can’t do a perfect comparison, but I loved the EDP and it lasted much longer on me than the EDT does. (I had some EDT at home, and sniffed the EDP while on a trip at a boutique that had no more of the EDT left.)
Oooh, then it sounds like getting the EdP is a smart move, IMO.
onto the next house. Byredo it is. Velvet Haze today.
I have the perfect choice for Friday’s project set aside!
I’m going to guess…Pulp!
Robin, I love The Different Company’s De Bachmakov, you smell wonderful!
Why thank you 🙂
Today’s SOTD is vintage Chanel’s No 19 edp layered over the body cream, heavy on the iris and mossy woods.
Headed out to dinner after work, my friends both love this on me so I’m sure I’ll get an extra hug (or two). 🙂
Wearing The Yard Next Door which reminds me of the big gum tree that towers over our road. Just home after visiting my mother…was thinking of Calypso as I sat in a room with TV on maximum volume, radio in next room on maximum volume, that night’s dinner simmering on stove …all at 8 am. Crosswords and British men doing train trips (tv) for 4 days. I “hunted” down NZs largest lime tree in the gardens ( very big) and tried the JM english fields …I like them.
Thanks for thinking of me.
Since it’s memorex week, i’d like to ask recommendations for good “lipstick” scents. I have a hankering to order some samples, the ones on my list so far (none of which I have smelled) are lipstick Rose, lipstick on, and French kiss – are there any not so obvious lipsticks scents you could recommend?
Histoires de Parfum Moulin Rouge, L’Artisan Drole de Rose, Chanel Misia are the ones I can think of right now.
thanks!
I found the new Parfum d’Empire Le Cri de la Lumiere a lipstick-like scent and one that’s growing on me. I don’t tend to like lipstick scents but this one is very pretty and not overbearing.
thank you, will investigate!
Atelier Silver Iris
Wow, would never have guessed that – will investigate this as well!
Not quite lipstick, but Guerlain Insolence edt makes me think of raspberry lip gloss. 😀
Bounded out of bed expecting to see snow. Not a flake in sight. Just a bit of rain. Dragged my husband out of bed to make it to earliest show of Phantom Thread to get half price. Theater wasn’t even open when we got there. They only opened a few minutes before the show. Liked it. Different from what I expected. Fascinating in many ways.
Came out and it’s heavy snow, blowing wind. Now I’m finishing a hot chocolate and will stop at grocery.
In Cuir de Lancôme. No Memorex for me… just a beautiful scent.
I loved PT, Daniel Day Lewis makes my heart flutter, he is brilliant in that film.
He is definitely flutter worthy.
I liked it too. DDL is one of my favorite male leads. Always enjoy watching him perform.
It was basically a Munchausen by proxy story which as disturbing as that is, is also quite interesting. Also found his relationship with his sister fascinating. Good day for a movie!
There’s definitely a sick/fascinating psychopathology going on there but I think it’s actually more closely related to Stockholm syndrome since she was basically creating a hostage who through the situation would come to develop warm feelings for and dependency on his captor. Munchausen by proxy is usually a parent who creates a sick child(either literally makes them sick or claims they are ill) in order to get sympathy and attention for themselves from usually medical professionals. I saw this once early on in my long career with a kid brought in for a “seizure” disorder. It was really sad.
I agree and also Woodcock’s relationship with his own mother was very odd as well..her appearing while he was sick and his obsession with her..
Stash today. Making roasted carrots before they go bendy so I am hoping there is something to watch on the DVR while they bake.
yum. roasted veges are the best!
Jo Malone’s Honey & Crocus for me today.
I’m one of a handful of people that came into the office today and now I want to go home and take a nap. It’s just that kind of day. Sleepy!
Sleepy here too. ????
Hope that you can get home OK tonight after work!
I am wearing Chergui for it’s cozy factor and watching the sleet and snow. So far no accumulation here but I imagine that will change later this evening when the temperature drops.
Chergui????! You smell great!
Spring must be in the air 🙂 I’m wearing Carnal Flower and sipping jasmine tea.
you smell beautiful!
You’re in white flower heaven!
This is off-topic, but prompted by the Memorex ad, I decided to look up this 2014 Jaguar ad starring Ben Kingsley, Tom Hiddleston, and Mark Strong.

Although I guess the slogan can apply to perfume shopping, too: It’s good to be bad. ????
Challenging day, and knew it would be so before it even started (4 am wake up didn’t help). Ambre 114 just because. Although the dry down isn’t working for me – do you think that your skin reacts differently when you are stressed?
Yes. Stress hormones and sweat. At least that is the case for me. Hope the evening is better.
SOTD is L’Ombre dans L’Eau which lillijo and mayfly reminded me about yesterday.
Yum!
Didn’t think I was gonna check in today……ridiculously busy day! 🙂
However busy though, I smelled perfectly polished, put together, and perfumed in Acqua di Parma Magnolia Nobile! 9 hours in and I can still catch a whif…..
SotM = Clinique Wrappings
I reached for No. 5 EdP, but my hand landed on Wrappings. It’s a nice scent for a chilly afternoon spent preparing my tax returns. Glad that’s over and done! Time for a long walk.
Smelling fantastic today! And hurray for getting your taxes done early.
thanks, Jalapeno! 😀
Zooming in on my break from an all-day meeting to say that I’m rocking DSH Mirabella and all of its plummy chypre perfection 🙂
Back to the grind……..
I love that one.
All day meeting? That should be illegal!
I don’t know what’s worse – an all day meeting or 9 hours of meetings in 10 hours?
To clarify, 10 different meetings for a total of 9 hours over a 10 hour period.
Weatherwise, today could have been a tale of two storms. This morning was no big deal at all. Then right around lunchtime everything changed. It was like someone threw a giant switch and the “real” storm showed up. We’ve had 3 bouts of thundersnow so far (2 of them with visible lightning bolts) and one power flicker (hope that is all there is of THAT). ????
NJ Transit canceled all their bus service this afternoon @ 4:30. And several train lines were already running on holiday or emergency schedules in my area.
SOTD = Gucci Bloom EdP, from the sample stash. I’ve heard from several NSTers that BWFs are good in winter. Today was as good a day as any to test that out.
Good luck getting home! This storm on top of the one we had less than a week ago is the pits..truly hope this is the last of it 🙁
Fortunately, I was already home. I didn’t have anywhere to go and just hunkered down when the weather turned.
I heard some of that thunder! Caught me off guard. Careful out there! Fortunately for me, we were dismissed at 2pm today.
It could have been worse here considering that the snow started around noon and not last night, as expected. I left work at 3pm and I did not have any problems with the commute. Let’s wait for sunshine tomorrow!
Glad to hear that your afternoon/evening commute was just fine! I heard the traffic reports for my area, and I was happy that no one I know was out there.
My hometown had issued a level 1 snow emergency (casual traffic is banned so plows can do their jobs), so I couldn’t be on the roads even if I had somewhere to go. It is currently a white (dark?) out outside and I don’t even wanna begin to think about all the shoveling I am going to have to do in the a.m. About 20ish inches. *Sigh*, Yeeeeaaaarrrrnnning for Spring.
SOTYD was Nectar de Iles. Very nice, lasted for a couple of hours and then !poof! it disappeared. It was lovely while it lasted.
I don’t know how many inches we got but it was not 20 inches. I am hoping that it will warm up so I can more easily dig out.
Nearly TWO WEEKS with no perfume, due to a pretty serious cold. But today, for the first time in two weeks: PERRRRRRRFUUUUUUUMMMME!
I wore the teeniest amount of Vintage No 19 edc. It’s everything that I love in the vintage edt, with a human side (and less of that green sappiness that must be galbanum). I really like it. It’s not clean enough to be office wear to my nose, but it’s smart and nice for those work from home days.
Glad you are feeling better.
Yay for PERFUME!!!!
SOTD = Guerlain Cuir Beluga
If I can only pick one Guerlain, this would be it. There, I said it. Other Guerlains in my collection, don’t turn on me because I picked my IT Guerlain, okay?
I worked from home today and what a day it was. Yesterday and today were a blur and I am shocked that tomorrow is already Thursday. After 2 months of planning that should have taken at least 3, if not, 4 months, we completed the main part of a high profile event. I feel like I lost 2 days of my life. It’s not the end though as there will be follow ups to follow ups and on and on and on. In any case, an incident transpired during one of the segments that made me angry on behalf of someone I don’t even really know. There was a roundtable where a number of people were called on to speak. The speakers were a range of employees at different levels. When it came for this particular group to share, the person who would typically represent the group started to speak and was rudely interrupted by a manager 2 levels above her and that person gave the update instead. How rude was that? My 2 up manager would NEVER do that even though she is known to be a rough and tumble kind of person.
Congrats on the even completing (and prepping it so quickly).
At least partially it’s behind you – so congratulations!
There are many rude, inconsiderate and plainly mean managers out there. All we can do is to try not to have them as our managers, not to be those managers ourselves and, if we get a chance, not hire/promote those people.
Choosing a favorite Guerlain is tough. Today I looked at my perfume log and noticed that my top three for the past month are Apres L’Ondee, L’Heure Bleue, and Eau de Guerlain. I guess I am a Guerlain girl.
Ugh on that manager. Years ago I worked for a truly wonderful manager, but her immediate superior often talked over us underlings in meetings. It happened so often it became our inside joke to call interrupting someone “pulling a Roger.” (Name changed to protect the not so innocent.)
I also think that might be my choice, but it’s been so long since I’ve sniffed Cuir Beluga that there’s a chance I’ve just made up how lovely it is.
Tomorrow is FRIDAY. Hajusuuri, PLEASE don’t scare me like that. Tomorrow is FRIDAY and I cannot have people saying it’s Thursday and that this week will still have TWO DAYS IN IT. This week needs to not have any more days.
OMG I’m on the wrong NST day. Gah.
On the weekend I pulled out some of my favorite frags from my high school days. Unfortunately the versions aren’t all vintage, but it’s a way of deciding if I still need these in my life.
SOTE is Oscar de la Renta edt on one wrist and Oscar d’esprit on the other. The EDT is more perfumey, not exactly as It remember but that’s not a surprise considering reformulations and ingredients.
I will try them both a bit more lavishly on the weekend.
Hello again, all, two questions:
1) Someone (I’ve already forgotten who!) said that Vetyverio reminds them of Sycomore. Is that the EDP or the EDT of Vetyverio that is Sycomoreish?
2) Would people be interested in splitting one or the other, if I got a FB? I know the splitmeet just ended, so I don’t want to wait until the next one to make a decision. Looks like a 50-mL bottle is $90 for the EDT and a 75-mL bottle is $165 for the EDP, for an idea of what split prices would roughly be.
