Lazy weekend poll ~ Haiku challenge 2017!

Posted by Robin on 6 May 2017 286 Comments

Today, our eighth annual Haiku Challenge (if you like, you can check out past years for inspiration). As we have done for the past couple years, we're also happy to include other forms of poetry if haiku don't inspire you. Have a perfume-related limerick or a sonnet you'd like to share? Please do.

If you're writing a haiku, pick a perfume or a perfume house (or really, anything related to perfume), and write a haiku about it. Use the simplified English form — your haiku should have three lines, the first line with five syllables, the second line with seven syllables and the third line with five syllables. You can put the perfume name in the title if that makes it easier, and at any rate, don’t stress over the rules of traditional haiku — this is just for fun.

Note: image is detail from Half Moon Bridge by Toshi Yoshida, 1941. (And it's a repeat from our first Haiku poll because it's one of my favorites.)

            I love it…. as well as Voix Humane 8…which is also sweet and incensey to my nose…they are both fragrances I probably never would have tried but I am so glad that I did.

    Etro Paisley

    One spray of this
    brought you back to me,
    like you never left.

    *inspired by the feeling of smelling Etro Paisley last year, reminded me of my dear late aunt. It was such a powerful feeling I teared up in the store. I was a little embarrassed but very emotional.

    I’m doing my own bergamot challenge today. I fell in love with the Le Labo when I tried it a couple of months ago and wanted to make sure there wasn’t a more “affordable” option out there I would love just as much so I’m comparing it to Commodity, Atelier and The Different Company. Here’s what came to mind…

    Bergamot, bergamot, bright and green
    Le Labo’s the winner
    With the craziest prices
    I’ve ever seen

    Happy Saturday everyone!

        Technically I cheated because that’s not a haiku, but it was the first thing that popped into my mind this morning.
        I love this one too! I’ve resisted a full bottle but I think I’m close to caving.
        I would guess Santal 33 is their best seller. It is well done, but one of those that was “too much” on my skin. I enjoyed it the next morning when just the far drydown remained.

    SipOTD: Homemade rose hip tea. Recipe follows (in Haiku form):

    Two cups of rose hips
    One-half cup dried hibiscus
    Two tablespoons mint

    Mix well. This makes a bunch. Everyone I’ve served or gifted this to has loved it (if I do say so myself). :-)

          If I were in charge (ha!) I would declare that L’Heure Bleue is required sniffing for everyone who cares about scent. I wish I had smelled it a few years ago, at the very beginning of my perfumed adventures. Things would have made more sense to my nose.

          LHB is so lovely my heart wobbles a bit every single time I wear it. I love the EdP and bought the EdT unsniffed. Subtly different but both are beautiful. And they can be bought so inexpensively, practically perfumath free, lol, although the extrait makes my eyes pop at 30 ml for $350.

          I adore Kevin’s review of LHB here on NST, also the Black Narcissus has some fascinating things to say about it on his blog.

    Leather, make-up, dust
    Wartime photos hold her gaze
    Rain at the window

    This is Voyage by Hiram Green. It’s one of three perfumes that transport me way back back to my Nana’s (grandmother’s) bedroom. We lived with my grandparents. Nana had the most magical thing, a train case in ivory leather with her initials on the clasp. The family had clubbed together and bought it for her in the 1950s for her first plane journey. She kept it under the bed with her most precious photos inside, in an army kitbag that had belonged to one of her sons. On rainy days and sick days, out came the train case. I never saw all of the photos at once, and I never dreamed of sneaking a look when she wasn’t there.
    (The other two are Yardleys Lavender and Phul-Nana cachous, which she sucked to freshen her breath. I had no idea it was also/originally a perfume until a year or two ago. It smells exactly as I remember the cachous.)

    Well, I dont remotely resemble any kind of poet, but since I’m grooving on nature today, I leave Garard Manley Hopkins to wax poetic in my stead.

    God’s Grandeur

    The world is charged with the grandeur of God.
    It will flame out, like shining from shook foil;
    It gathers to a greatness, like the ooze of oil
    Crushed. Why do men then now not reck his rod?
    Generations have trod, have trod, have trod;
    And all is seared with trade; Bleared, smeared with toil;
    And wears man’s smudge and shares man’s smell: the soil
    Is bare now, nor can foot feel, being shod.

    And for all this, nature is never spent;
    There lives the dearest freshness deep down things;
    And though the last lights off the black West went
    Oh, morning, at the brown brink eastward, springs —
    Because the Holy Ghost over the bent
    World broods with warm breast and with ah! bright wings.

    Three cheers for sprung rhythm!!

            Oh, I’m not sure I’m the one to ask. I am no “nose” and really have difficulty picking apart fragrances. I tend to pick perfumes that move me on emotional level, and while I greatly admire and wish I was more of the “intellectual” type perfumista, I am not. That’s my disclaimer????
            So. I’ve had 3 decants of the edt and loved it right off the bat. I didn’t have any problems with longevity as some seem to. The edt seems to me to be “airier” and lighter, a bit transparent and diaphanous. Like a piece of pretty lacy lingerie.

            The edp to me seems more substantial, heavier. If it were a piece of lingerie, it would be a boned corset that meant business.

            Hope that helps.

            Boned corset, I love it.
            I just came from the gym and have to get out of this sports bra!
            I have between now and Tuesday to make my birthday choice.
            1. Box of eels edp or edp
            2. Or new Aedes in red bottle ( I too pick fragrances on an emotional level)
            3. Back up bottle of original Aedes in L’artisan bottle @ 185 before it’s only available in new bottle for 245 clams.
            4. Satori
            One birthday – one bottle
            What to do.

    Gorgeous Au Dela
    by Bruno Fazzolari
    Disco ball perfume

    this perfume is just strikingly beautiful, with a particular chypre clarity that I have not smelled in many modern perfumes. Very tenacious, too, so I was going to apply it lightly but then – nobody applied lightly in the 70s, right?

    Tangent sort of related to fragrance— We received our annual invitation to a gala to raise money for a local refuge for battered women. The them is “An Evening of Empowerment, Hero Edition,” and it is about celebrating heroes…. the survivors of abuse and other heroes. The there are small pictures of Malala Yousafzai, Ruth Bader Ginsberg, Frieda Kahlo… and other important women, and inexplicably Yo Yo Ma and Neil Degrasse Tyson. On the front of the card is a photo of Coco Chanel and her quote, “A girl should be two things: Who and what she wants.” This quote from this person in this context seems really weird to me.

    Y’all, how have I not smelled this? I have OJ Woman on one arm and Isfarkand on the other. Such a beautiful image for the post, Robin! To see wisteria bloom in Japan is one of my dreams.
    We’re having a really, really weird spring this year, so my “spring” perfumes are not getting a lot of wear. Hence, the haiku:

      I was in Japan almost a year ago. I was not really aware of the whole phenomenon (so I missed the parks that hosted the wisteria festivals), but I bumped into a bunch of very large wisterias in the ‘wild’ when I was hiking.
      So beautiful. Also very impressive to me were all the Iris everywhere. Purple, blue, white, pink, yellow, red…

      And you made a lovely haiku!

      I love the smell of coffee!

      The best moment to smell it is in the morning amd I am still lying in bed, trying to wake up ;). And my husband is downstairs making coffee and the scent slowly but surely enters the bedroom.

      Smells so good when your nose has just woken up (everything smells extra strong and ‘new’ for a short while).

    Hello all! No poems from me, too much to do today.

    Yesterday came home from Malaga 20C sun to 10C cloudiness. Serge Lutens “Fumerie Turque” eased the journey. Notes are honey, juniper berries, tonka, chamomile, patchouli, vanilla, rose, redcurrant, tobacco, styrax and suede.

    Today I’m getting ready to go back to DUS, where I’ve taken an AirBnB through to the end of June. Looking forward to more stability rather than the weekly hotel check-in/ check-out palaver. SOTD is Robert Piguet “Fracas”.

    Top: orange blossom, mandarin, green leaves, peach, hyacinth and bergamot;
    Mid: coriander, carnation, tuberose, violet root, geranium, osmanthus, jasmine, lily-of-the-valley, iris, rose, narcissus and gardenia;
    Base: sandalwood, amber, musk, oakmoss, cedar and vetiver.

    This is my new FB to celebrate the first invoice from my new contract. I don’t know why it’s marketed ‘for women’ as it’s pretty unisex to my nose, as far as floral perfumes go anyway.

    No poetry for my today. Woke up early and actually paid some bills before my cup of chai tea. Now I need to deposit that check to make sure that I can keep myself and milk, bread, and a full tank of gas (don’t worry, my freezer is full of food, so I won’t starve). I just love the fact that where I work is switching over to instead of getting paid weekly, it will be every two weeks. If they do the paying us once a month, I will spit nails. Sorry for the whining.

    I am spending the day in Amouage Epic. I can’t get enough of the women’s version.

    Good morning, all. I have been reading and loving your haiku, and started several, but never quite got anything good enough to share. I can share this, though: the pile of assignments is now marked! Yay! Maybe my haiku could have been

    Home work and perfume
    At my oak desk. NST
    Frequently distracts.

    I wore my birthday-to-be perfume for the marking. I’ve used up about 6 little samples from Chanel:

    La Pausa
    Not a drop left. All
    That witty elegance sprayed
    And gone. A bottle calls.

    Bother. An extra syllable in the last line, but please indulge me. If you had read the sort of prose that I just spent the weekend on, you too might insert an extra syllable or two, I think. Actually, I wanted to write something beautiful about La Pausa as the smell of amethyst, but my mind is stuck in Y3 logic, and though I have concluded that this perfume does indeed smell amethyst-grey, I couldn’t haiku it to save myself.

    To work now. Be well, poetic and fragrant, NST.

    I’m just getting back to wearing perfume since a nasty bout of flu some weeks ago messed up my sense of smell. I tried once or twice a couple of weeks ago, but found it was a mistake. I could only smell the harshest and most synthetic notes of the scent and I felt as if I had just applied bug spray or disinfectant.

    Beloved perfume
