Monday scent of the day 2/27

Posted by Robin on 27 February 2017 206 Comments

Elizabeth Taylor and David Bowie

It is with profound sadness that I inform you that it's Monday, yet again. It's also Elizabeth Taylor's birthday, International Polar Bear Day and Anosmia Awareness Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Stash SJP.

Reminder: 3/3 will be Let Your Freak Frag Fly Friday — wear your oddest fragrance. Suggested by Monkeytoe.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Let Your Freak Frag Fly Friday: Interlude Woman

Elizabeth Taylor in Cleopatra is one of my fav’s, Oscar worthy in my opinion.

    Good morning, NST!
Today, I’m wearing Jubilation 25 for the second day in a row. I purchased the Amouage women’s discovery set a couple of years ago, and every now and again I dig it out to see if anything I didn’t love before has grown on me. I used to be very very freaked out by Jubilation. As in: Get rid of it now! But today, I’m so head over heels in love with this beauty that it almost hurts. My husband came sniffing at me this morning. “You smell sexy,” he told me. And I have to say, I really really do. :-)

So true. The phenomenon does make a great case for hoarding samples. I have piles of “No thanks, but I might love it someday” perfume samples tucked away.

Profumi del Forte by Tirrenico today. I get the marine, the fresh, aquatic… I am not sure of the citrus the review talks about. Most of my few citrus scents are very obvious and this one is not. I think of it as an understated summer scent, wishful thinking as it is only Feb. 27th.

SOTD a dab of FM Lipstick Rose body butter on my wrist. Greedily reading about the new iris hand cream had me remember that I had a body cream sample tucked away untried. Verdict: I really like this- a lot more than the liquid perfume version.

I’m wearing the dreaded Guerlain Mahora. I guess I kinda like it — it’s tropical and big and white and floral and it certainly cheers me up. There is however, that very odd greenish note there. Overall I think it’s very Guerlain.

Mahora is one that has kind of grown on me. The newer version, Mayotte, is supposed to be the same but to my nose, it seemed to smooth out that odd greenish note a bit. I didn’t like Mahora at first but I really love both versions now. Hope it grows on you, too. Happy Monday!

I once blind-bought a mini of Mahora on ebay and quite enjoyed it until it had been on me all day, and an unpleasant metallic-chemical effect came up. It was especially weird because I have scent-eating skin and nothing, but nothing, lasts as long as the 9 hours I got out of Mahora. Another trial wearing got me the same weird I-smell-like-a-robot effect at about hour 8, so although I thought it didn’t deserve the P:TG hatred, I passed the mini on to someone else.

      No idea what that was.

That’s one of my top comfort scents, but I’m afraid to wear it out of the house since some people think it smells like dirty feet, or worse! But it makes a great bedtime scent for me.

I have a sample and on me it smells more like dirty hair than feet. But if I add a small spritz of jasmine (I think I tried SL a la nuit) it’s beautiful.

Yes, something dirty. I actually don’t register that. On me it smells like dusty, old books. A little musty. I’ve tried it with jasmine on a rec from I think it was Sajini (?) who loved the combo, too. It was nice-I think I used the Diptyque Jasmin.

I’m working on getting over my insecurities about perfume. I figure, if I like it I can probably wear it as long as I don’t overdo. People who think that musk smells awful probably think I’ve been rolling in crap, but I try not to worry. I adore dirty musks and the weirder animalics.
Working in a veterinary office is helping some. It smells like anxious animals and those Scentsy things so even my barnyardiest perfumes fly under the radar. It’s the floral stuff that might be a problem at work since everyone is in their twenties and anything perfume-y smells like “old lady”

That’s a great place to wear the “dirtier” scents. The animals will always be suspected first. Yeah, I’m still a little self-conscious with regards to wearing polarizing scents in public, even though I’m not a heavy applier for the most part.

The cold weather is (temporarily) back here in my neck of the woods, so Shaal Nur for me today. Something about lemon and incense together makes me think of a warm, cozy chapel near where I used to live. The scent of the candles had permeated the wood paneling and there was always a faint hint of lemon polish hanging in the air early in morning as well.

My limited French language skills fail me as I read “hurlant” as “hurling” rather than “howling.” But both sound rather dangerous.

That’s what I thought too. Especially as most of the perfumes reference ocean liners or air travel. But it turns out it’s screaming or howling (and to my mind out of step with the other themes).

Metal Hurlant was also the name of a Science Fiction magazine where graphic artists like Moebius started out (I learned today from a Fragrantica review. I haven’t done a fact check, so don’t bet your life’s savings on it).

A bit tired today as I managed to stay up til the end of the Oscars. Wow, was that cringe-worthy! I’m glad Moonlight won and the La La Land crew handled it pretty gracefully, I thought.

SOTD Cuir de Lancome which I’d been wearing most of the weekend. I’m really loving this lately. I need to explore more leathers which is a note that’s still challenging for me. I guess CdL is leather lite. For me it’s more about the creamy saffron.

Mmm. You smell beautiful! I tip-toed into leathers with CdL, too. It was my first. But now some leathers that once didn’t appeal to me at all are my very favorites. It’s fascinating how our noses can change so much. Who knows? In a couple of years (or days, or decades), leather could wind up your favorite note. Or not. :-)

I should have kept my Cuir de Russie sample. I didn’t like it when I tried it a few years ago, but I suspect I might like it more now. I smelled Adjatay on paper only-it didn’t register as leather, but something sweet gourmandy(?). Need to retry. Thanks for your input!

Hajusuuri described CdR best IMO, poopie-leather. ???? I have a tiny bit of the extrait. Maybe the EDT and EDP are milder and less of that strong leather note? I still prefer CdL and BV.

I have both the extrait and the EDT of CdR, and on me the EDT definitely has the stronger leather note. The extrait has much more of the pillowy soft orris.

Happy Monday everyone! I am in Nicolai Amber Oud. I am not lucky with this one. Since I dabbed it from a sample very early this morning the only note that I get is lavender. A very sharp, brisk and very clean lavender more on the masculine side. According to reviews the drydown is supposed to be creamy and kind of gourmand, but it never developed on me. What I applied on skin is gone by now, but the two dabs on my sweater are very annoying, since it has an amazing longevity on clothes and the sillage is more than expected. I will survive… and money saved

Welp, I wasn’t planning on letting my freak flag fly just yet, but I pulled out my sample of Kimonanthe for the first time and it’s pretty weird on me. First of all, it’s HUGE. I hated the opening, but re-read Kevin’s review and decided to hang in there. It’s somewhat tamer 5 hours later, and I can imagine it might smell good on a man. It’s got that sorta oldschool medicinal vibe like Dr. Pepper or cola syrup (or prunes?), a gigundo osmanthus and some skunky leather. Sadly, all I can think of is Dr. Bonkers Stupendous Snake Oil.

Testing out new Coromandel EdP from my Personal Chanel Counter vs old (dunno what vintage) Coromandel EdT. I figure this is as freaky as Chanel gets.

So far, the new version is softer, gentler, rounder (if that makes any sense), and the patchouli is considerably less funky, though it’s not funk-free. The two scents are clearly related but quite different. Coromandel has never been my favorite LE – sometimes that white chocolate note jumps out, and I haaaaaaate white chocolate – so the new version is working better for me. Still not likely to make it to my to-buy list.

We finally got power back on Saturday evening. 5 days! I am so ready for this winter to be o-v-e-r. No rain in the forecast for this week, yay!

I wore Ostara yesterday. I was hoping it would command Spring to arrive :D
Especialy the first 2 hours are a so good!
But sometimes it turns weirdly sweet on my skin. A bit cloying :(
My mistake of course, I had only sampled it once when I decided to buy a whole bottle (“But it was on discount!”). I’ll try one spray less next time, maybe that helps…

I have to admit that my original manufacturer sample, which caused me to buy that discount bottle of Ostara, smells different than the bottle I bought – and the sample suits me better than the bottle. :( I wear Ostara less than I had thought I would, because it’s really not the same, to my nose.

The greennes in the opening is fab!

I dont mind sweet actually. But this kind of sweetness is uncomfortable. I suspect my skin and/or my nose have problems with certain kinds of vanilla-like scents. Black from Bvlgari turns a bit messy on my skin after 3 hours as well. On my husband it smells better.

You smell fantastic! Luckily, on me RdN smells like Rochas Femme + rose, and the rose fades away. So money saved–at least until the day a bell jar falls into my lap or costs the same as Femme. I’m not holding my breath for either. ???? I’m sure it’s different (and likely better) sprayed rather than dabbed from a sample like mine, but I’m going to stick with that idea for the sake of my wallet.

Actually, my experience so far with Safran Troublant has been decidedly freaky: I smell like curry to myself. ????

Currently at Houston’s IAH airport waiting to board my flight home – connecting flight due to arrive in Aberdeen 11:am tomorrow morning. sad to leave family & friends here, but looking forward to getting home now I’m actually on my way, despite weather forecast!

Today’s SOTD is not what I had originally planned to wear, but this sample of Tauer Incense Rose demanded that I try it today. Today is the very first time I have tried anything from this house. Getting plenty of incense, not so much rose. More like dried rose petals and a whiff of artisanal root beer along with the resins. Rather complicated stuff, and definitely not for beginners, IMO. Thank you, Hajusuuri, for the sample and its associated experience.

That could very well be! Incense Rose was/is a wild ride for me… I had an immediate sensation of being transported to the Desert Southwest (US) when I sprayed it. Never had that happen before, a perfume take me to another part of the world.

I love that pic of Liz with Bowie!
My SOTD is a very strange one…I LOOOVED it when I bought it plus two backups-yes 2 backups on the same day!!Lol.But after joining the gym and having had some awesome bootcamp training sessions,it is all that it reminds me of everytime a sniff myself:Wet jocks, wetTER jock-straps,wet towels wet floors, the wet mops for aftercleaning showers after wet washing showers….all of that in clouds of cleaning product+ Axe Apollo or some other ghastly youth-appointed freshness…Tooo much tooo clean for me,with a remnant of some unclean hiding somewhere in the bushes….Lol.The frag in question:Le Beau Male…..alas!I love you,but your ususal surroundings make my know curl up,highly confused!!

I should have gone freaky today since I’m not at work today, but after the Oscar party we had last night, needed the serenity of good ol’ Chanel 19.

For the past three days I’ve been doing my Ancient Resins+ Dries combo. Freakish, no? Maybe I could be a signature kind of person.
Except my little decants of AR and Dries are depleting quickly, not to be refilled until my trip to the States next month, and what about the other loves?

Continuing my Month of Roses —

    SOTD = Tauer Incense Rose

Like, not love. There’s something about this that is persistent and will not let go! It could be the vetiver incense woody combo – who knows?

    Smelled in the wild today:

A walking half bottle of Terre d’Hermes. I walked past this guy on 5th Avenue who must have dumped a half bottle of TdH all over his body and soaked through his clothes!

I had a great time with Jalapeno yesterday. We just hit it off as if we knew each other forever!

We’re having thundersnow and sleet and general disgustingness so I’m wearing L’eau Scandaleuse, a cashmere sweater dress ($40 off-season clearance at a thrift store, one of my best-ever finds) and thick squishy wool thigh-highs. 100% sweater coverage is the only way to survive winter in the PNW if you’re anything like me.

I am not sure where tracy.o is located exactly, but we had the thundersnow in Seattle. I didn’t get to see any of the lightning because I was in the office turned away from the window. Definitely a weird weather day plus a crazy commute because a petroleum truck crashed with two cars and is on its side on I-5.

Also in the PacNW and I discovered sweater dresses a few years ago – they are a game-changer. I also discovered fleece-lined tights, which are just as warm as most any pant. Fleece-lined tights, sweater dress, sweater coat, and boots is pretty much my uniform for going out at night. But sweater dresses also work with skinny jeans or high-waisted slim trousers, which makes them super versatile.

Wearing Insolence today. My FIL had surgery today and is expected to be in the hospital for 5 days at least. The last time I wore Insolence he told me I smelled great. Waiting patiently for an update on him.

Thank you Petunia! He’s an awesome guy. When we still had our beloved cat Buster, Johnny came to our place to stay and look after him so we could go on our trip. Why do cats decide to be in a fight at such opportune times? Buster ended up at the vet and came home with a cone around his neck and a prescription to take. Johnny gave Buster his pills and they bonded for the week while we enjoyed beautiful Hawaii.
