Tuesday scent of the day 12/20

Posted by Robin on 20 December 2016 337 Comments

peter shire teapot maybe

It's Tuesday! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm still in Fendi Theorema. We'll see, maybe I'll wear it all week. And, I'm finishing off a sample of Aftelier's Organic Aged Pu-erh Tea in Tangerine.* Partial points for the Friday project?

Reminder: 12/23 will be Just Finish It Friday — finish a sample or decant you’ve been hanging onto for a long time, OR wear from a precious bottle that’s getting low. Big bonus points if you finish a bottle! (Suggested by Elisa)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: image is either a Peter Shire teapot, or a teapot in the manner of Peter Shire. If you've time to kill today, you can make your own (virtual) Peter Shire teapot here, or you can check out the Peter Shire furniture in the David Bowie sale at Sotheby's (held earlier this year).

* If you've never had Pu-erh (and I'm far from an expert, I've only had it a few times) you can read more about it at Serious Eats. Aftelier's version is not sold in a compressed cake but instead aged in a loose form, then cured inside a dried tangerine which "flavors" the finished tea, so that it's earthy but also citrusy.

Yesterday I finished off a canister of herbal tea.
Today I finished the last of my Rose de Petra, I had a small decant from a generous NST and I am enjoying the beautiful rose, but also morning the loss of this one. Hold my hand please…

Brewed some black tea this morning and added rose petals, vanilla and raspberry jam. Its tasted de-lish

I’m not finishing samples but I’m actually trying my samples which is quite an achievement for me. Today’s choice is No Sport by Parfumérie Moderne. It’s nice.
Tea OTD is my current staple of Earl Grey Fleurs, which will not be repurchased.

Had NO clue that was a teapot until I read the small print. I thought it was “modern art” which totally escapes my understanding, most likely due to my genetically limited and rapidly aging intellect.

SOTD is MFK Grand Soir, which is GOOD, but not as great as it is in cool weather. We need some of that vortex down here. Christmas Day is predicted to be in the mid 80’s. Who wants to cook, bake, and make merry in that weather? Yuck.

Theorema is a scent that keeps piquing my interest. So many seem to swoon over it. I should put it on my bucket list of scents to experience before I go space trucking????

I’m with you two–I didn’t see that as a teapot until I read your comment, Deva, and even now I’m strugglng to hold the teapot label in my mind as I look at the picture. My first thought was of a pretty, interesting desert, with a chocolate this and a licirice thst and perhaps a fruity thing over there. I prefer my interpretation, but then , it’s 5.30, I haven’t had breakfast yet and ‘m actively hungry, so all my thoughts are turning to food….

I’m kinda with you on the modern art. I just-don’t-geddit, most of the time, though I do tend to like modern sculpture better than 2D. My art historian sister despairs of me.

You might try the book “But Is It Art” from Oxford by Cynthia Freeland who bears some relationship to me. (Wink wink.) I have been told by many readers that it really did help them “get it” about modern art.

Next thought: why is she wearing the same jumper all week? And don’t Americans say ‘sweater’? At that point I re-read your post. Duh.

    I’m in L’orpheline again because it’s lovely.

This is the ugly christmas sweater I’m wearing right now in the office: https://www.amazon.com/Raisevern-Graphic-Pullover-Sweater-Sweatshirt/dp/B01M72KCTG/ref=sr_1_3?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1482246520&sr=1-3&nodeID=7141123011&keywords=ugly+christmas+sweater+cat

My husband wore it to his party last week and everyone there laughed and thought it was great. People in my office are a bit “too cool” to find such things funny so I’ve only gotten a few genuine comments of people liking it and then lots of smirks. Oh well….. Maybe they’ll laugh more later when they’ve had alcohol.

I think the dragon in the Santa hat is quite manly! Sure your hubs could totally rock it and possibly start a new trend: Morern Art As Viewed Through the Critical Lans of Ugly Christmas Sweaters. It could get all high brow and intellectual. ????

That sweater is great! My boys had to wear ugly Christmas sweaters to a party and we got them kits from Target and had great fun hot-gluing decorations on them. Seriously thinking about getting their Christmas picture made in them (I am beyond late getting that done so it can go on Christmas cards, but hey, I wouldn’t be the first to do a post-Christmas card).

This has never happened to me before but I can’t remember the scent I put on this morning! It’s a mini that was via a freebie meet (I think) and it was, and maybe still is, a favorite of ihadanidea. It’s a rose scent, very nice, and yet I’m going crazy trying to recall what it is!

    Help!

Holiday party today starting at 1pm, morning is crazy amount of excitement waiting for this to begin.

    Cheers!

Oh no! That’s unfortunate. I think I’ve done that, sort of. I’ll wear something, forget I’m wearing it and then have to think really hard about what I put on and finally remember – which usually means it wasn’t a scent I was crazy about. Think about what rose scents you have and go through the list?

      Have fun at your party!

The stopper on my manufacturer’s sample of Osmanthe Yunnan broke a few months ago so this week’s theme has inspired me to use it before I lose it. There’s a piece of plastic stuck in the opening so I can only get out a little at a time, but that kind of works because I find I have to reapply this one fairly often anyway.

A stopper broke off inside one of my Hermes samples too. I couldn’t get anything out so I used a pin to push the broken piece down into the fragrance then made a stopper out of a bit of plastic wrap, aluminum foil, and a rubber band. It looked silly but it kept the fragrance from evaporating.

In the spirit of the project, I drained my sample of Tiziana Terenzi Gold Rose Oudh; going so far as to break the sprayer to get it all. It’s a very dark rose and I like it enough to get another sample some day. Enabler husband gets the prize; last night he used easily 2x the normal amount of TF Tobacco Oud to drain his sample and this morning I see his empty bottle of Herrera For Men in the trash!

Hellooooo, NSTers! I haven’t seen you in ages! Months? I was desperately finishing up my thesis, which, you will be happy to hear, I submitted last Thursday!!! Good heavens, it feels WONDERFUL to be done writing that horrible manuscript. I still have to defend it in early February before I become Dr Koyel. I flew to my parents’ house in DC on Friday, and since then have done absolutely NO work. Reading through this NST post is my last bit of procrastination before I plough into either postdoc/job applications or a publication (haven’t decided which is less odious).

SOTD is Jasmin Immortelle Neroli de l’Occitane, from a bottle I got my mother last year because I wanted it for myself and couldn’t justify a purchase :) She doesn’t do the sample/decant thing, and has no mostly-empty bottles, so I won’t be able to participate in this week’s project, but I so LOVE emptying samples.

Happy, low-stress holidays, my NST lovelies!

I’m feeling much better today – organizing samples while listening to Amy Winehouse made me feel so very happy. I was picking samples that are almost done for Friday’s project and realized that the only ones I have that are almost finished are scents I really love. Whatever samples I finish off this week have already gone onto full bottle wish list. Thank heaven my sense of smell has largely returned after my recovery day yesterday of lounging with my cat.

I’m wearing Hiris today – it’s from a bottle that isn’t even close to being empty (thank goodness!), but I’m spending the afternoon with my husband and he loves it, so it was an easy choice. The “drain the amazing samples” project starts tomorrow.

Glad you’re feeling better: I bet some of the NSTers’ wishes contributed to the healing process:)
I like Hiris, but on me it’s one of the scents that I could easily wear in the morning and apply anything I want in the afternoon since by that time it would be completely gone.

I am currently in Deneuve right now. I am so bummed, last night while applying the Cuir de Russie extrait before going to bed, the bottle slipped out of my hand on onto the carpet. I managed to save about 4ml. The bottle was a third used but I still lost quite a bit of it. I still have the massive bottle of EDT but still, I hate spilling perfume.

The only decant I can remember actually finishing (as opposed to sneaky evaporation) was Amouage Beloved. Fortunately, it began showing up on discount sites shortly thereafter. Another great fitting perfume for the holidays. :)

All of my decants are wrapped with parafilm, which helps with the evaporating issue but the level in Beloved one is getting dangerously low… It must be because of holidays ;)

SOTD is “Garuda” by Jul et Mad Paris. I got a discovery pack of 3 x 5ml a while back as Garuda was described as like Nanban (which I love). I can see sort-of why people might say that, but I don’t think I’m missing much by having Nanban and Anubis and not having Garuda. Garuda veers towards a more normal rose-oud-saffron, the top notes are a bit on the sweet side for me, and longevity is 3-4 hours, so inadequate. The others in the J+MP pack are Nea and Nin-Shar, neither of which I’ve tried yet.

    Top: bergamot, orange, cumin and pink pepper;
    Mid: oud, saffron and rum;
Base: patchouli, vetiver, woody notes, cedar, cashmeran, amber, vanilla and musk.

I was feeling so bad yesterday, that I made an appointment with my Doctor. I have a infection in my right ear and my throat was very red and irritated. I got a shot and two prescriptions. Feeling pretty bad right now, but I love coming on NST and reading everyone’s choices. It makes me feel better.

After a warm shower, I’ll probably put a few dabs of Lancome Miracle on.

I resisted for years, but I hate sore throats more than I dislike salty water. ???? And it’s a genuine doctor-approved at-home remedy. It only requires 1/4 to 1/2 tsp. of salt per 8oz of water. Do it once or twice a day for as long as you’re hurting.

No, it’s like nasal irrigation, so you *could* do it every day–but you don’t need to. Just use it when you’re experiencing any of the things it helps with: sore throat, allergies, toothache, mouth sores…

Hello! I got back yesterday evening from rushing down to Whanganui with the dear man. He had to attend a meeting about his mother, and I went to keep him company on the trip, six hours each way, one day of grey, miserable rain, one day of perfect summer with glorious views of Ruapehu for about 30 miles. I was tired last night, even though I didn’t do any of the driving, and this morning I feel lackadaisical, so I’m wearing a very relaxed dress (that’s code for “one of my fat clothes” ) and a favourite among favourites, Ambre Narguile. I shall do very little today, I suspect, but what I do do, I will do smelling delicious.

I have tried some, but the only one with any appeal for me is the Cardamon and Mimosa. Mostly I find the scents a little nondescript and overpriced for what they deliver, and also, the sales staff at Britomart specialise in expressing finely-honed superiority combined with exquisitely calibrated ignorance. I am now humbly aware that elderly, dithery, poor types like me are NOT their target demographic group, so I oblige them now by never visiting their shop. When you come to Ak, we could go to S&C, which has a JM store now. The service there will likely be far more pleasant and obliging.

I intended to finish off a vial of something every day this week, but a sample of E&J Nirvana Rose arrived yesterday and I had to test it out (I’m on a rose binge). It’s pleasant, but I’m getting more geranium and vetiver than rose – I think my newfound love of rose scents tends toward the loud and lurid. Good thing I work at home . . .

I’d like to second the enthusiasm behind Tabac Aurea and Winter Woods, and add that Fireside Intense is WONDERFUL!!! It’s like sitting next to a barbecue pit burning lightly sweet wood.

On the other hand, I wasn’t that excited about Incense Pure or Ambre Noir. They were both fine, but nothing you can’t get from a hundred other incense or amber perfumes, in my opinion.

Ooh. Hmm. They *all* have a related feel because of the ylang. But, based on their ‘classifications’ and the way they wear on me, I’d say Y&Y is closer to 31RC (which is quite floral on me despite the patchouli-based chypre-ness). They both have a round, yellow warm, feel to me. I think the aldehydes in N°22 make it less similar. But maybe that’s just my nose and skin…????

Took a couple of days off, and today plan to go to the city (SF) chasing the holiday spirit: there are some beautiful decorations that I manage to miss almost every year being busy with one thing or the other just 20 miles away. Not this year!
I’m not sure what to do about perfume: on the one hand, it’s my vacation, do I’d like to wear something great while enjoying it (thinking about Fille en Aiguilles). On the other hand, there might be a good opportunity to smell/test something new… Probably I should do the “one hand” (or rather wrist) but keep the second one scent-free – just in case.

I’m wearing Labdanum 18 this morning which is all powdery vanilla on me. I have nothing in a FB that I am close to finishing and my samples are meh–if I like something in a sample I get a bottle, so I’m out for Friday. I have to brave the crowds today because I can’t find the Christmas tags for the presents, but the closet doors are fixed (yay!) and I have booked the painters after the New Year to do the den. New kitchen countertops/backsplash in Feb–this house renovation is almost finished!

You must be getting our share of summer temperatures! It’s been cool-ish and wet-ish here so far, but I must say, the countryside looks well for it. I enjoyed hurtling through the heartlands yesterday and seeing the creeks and rivers full. If summer would stop messing about and get started properly, I would join you by choosing all sorts of cool-smelling perfumes.

I almost went with Theorema again today, but opted for Jeux de Peau at the last moment. I’m in need of all its sweet, brioche-y comfort today; my health and sanity are rapidly eroding under the onslaught of these seven-baby-wakings nights on top of a maelstrom of work stress and all the ghastly things in the news recently. Last night my babe, my husband, and myself were all in tears at the dinner table, which was pathetic enough to be comical. I wish fairy godmothers were real (and did laundry), but beautiful fragrances do help somewhat.

I’m with a humongo company and it acts like the Energizer Bunny most of the time. Anyway, it seems that many people are taking time off and the company also lost its mind about dress-down. For goodness sake, it’s a conservative company and even the senior executives (1 and 2 heartbeats away from the CEO) are wearing jeans (no, scratch that, DENIM) all this and next week even in corporate headquarters. Another of my almost-gone le labo samples, benjoin, but also didn’t quite finish this one off. I suppose I can get more during that month they come back next year, but still…
Problem going is that most samples that aren’t for me I try to pass off to others, so the ones that are dwindling tend to be ones I like but are too expensive to invest in/otherwise unavailable etc.
    (then there’s the full ones I haven’t tried…)

    Late to the party!

SOTD = Parfums MDCI Chypre Palatin

Nope, not runing out. This was one where I got a decant, then decided to buy a FB and my FB is still full. Fragrantica lists 21 notes and I can detect only a few (nfract I have one candidate for Friday where I may finish the bottle; however, I have a BUB and also have it in the extrait. This week, I will finish my La Mer SPF 50 sunscreen (yes, you still need it in winter!) and my Solstice Scents Creamy Whipped Soap in Foxcroft. The creamy whipped soaps are really good – I am obsessed. How obsessed, you ask? Since October, I’ve bought 9 jars. I am giving one away as a gift as I am unexpectedly joining another family on Christmas Eve and have decided to repurpose some of the scented stuff I bought for myself. For the guys, I am breaking up two 4-pack Jack Black lip balms and will include 2-3 perfume samples that I just got from Nordstrom.

In other news, I bought a gift set of Cartier L’Envol which includes two 100 mL bottles. I will split one of the two bottles at Splitmeet and someone can meep the refill bottle (does not stand upright). Just FYI, it is available at the but I bought mine at Nordstrom.

Craziness with my post… I meant to say it’s available at the discounters but really who needs 100 mLs when one could buy 200 mLs and split it. I’ll probably end up splitting part of the other bottle as well,

I didn’t bother with sunscreen in Montreal, no sun to speak of and besides, with snow hitting my face and melting, the sunscreen cream would liquefy and drip into my eyes, blinding me. The sun levels must be different in NYC.

Today I wore some from my sample of Orlov Parfum by Orlov. I wanted something serious and beautiful before I went to a funeral for my next-door neighbor. He was a dental school professor and obviously much loved by many colleagues and students. It was a full church and a very formal and sad occasion, but beautiful. There was a lot of incense in the church (Episcopal), which I am not used to, but I felt warm from it as I left, enveloped in the smoke and fragrance of it. There is a reason why they use it.
