Tuesday scent of the day 12/13

Posted by Robin on 13 December 2016 249 Comments

teapot

Happy Tuesday, all! (And an update: tonight is the last supermoon of 2016, the cold moon.) What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in By Kilian Sacred Wood. Tea at the moment is Les Jardins de Gaïa Finest Earl Grey.

Reminder: on 12/16, wear a sandalwood fragrance, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    Love today’s photo

    SOTD is Box of Eels

Just did some damage at one of my favorite skin care lines Paula’s (no affiliation) since they have 20% off. Good thing Donatella doesn’t count beauty in her poll.

    Have a fragrant day!

You smell great. And, you must have great skin too! I love Paula’s and the information on the site. What I learn about skin care and cosmetics helps me save $$ for perfume :-) .

I am big fan of there body lotion for bumpy skin. I learned about it on the BdJ blog. It has been my holy grail for moisturizing on those areas. The skin exfoliants for the face are my go to.

I don’t know what to wear for tonight! I’ve lost over 15 lbs this year so none of my dresses fit anymore. I don’t know if I should just wear some nice black pants with a silk shirt or raid the dress section at TJ Maxx after work.

Congrats to you! I am still trying to shed off my baby weight. I have been running twice a week and doing this asana dance (sort of a mix of yoga and ballet) once a week.

Wow, that’s a full stone and more. When I lost weight after a more healthy lifestyle, I loved that I could get new clothes that made me look and feel good. Mind you, I wasn’t buying to a party deadline. ;^)

I plan to wear Lyric today as well. You smell great!
Unless the party is formal (for years I had one of those), do not spend money on buying something last moment: you’ll look good in whatever you put together from the pieces you already have, and you can celebrate you weight loss achievement by buying something really nice what you’ll carefully choose later, without a pressure. If you wear make-up, better spend that time applying it. Or doing your hair. Or just resting for 30 minutes.

Thank you for such kind words. It is awfully cold out today, so I think I’ll just put on some nice black pants I recently bought and a silk shirt. It’s easy to get caught up in the hype sometimes.

I am in no 5 Eau Premiere today wondering why I have ignored this bottle for the last 2 or 3 years. The Sephora website is really bothering me right now. I have a million gift cards to use at Sephora and the closest store is about 45 minutes away, so I don’t get to go to a physical store every year. I load up my online cart and proceed to go to the checkout and enter in the gift cards. The website only lets you enter two gift cards and I have five. I’ve never had that happen with any retailer before. I could have 6 and the websites have let me use them. I did some culling with the shopping cart and used two gift cards. After Christmas, I shall see what happens.

We are so used to on line shopping, that we don’t use the human customer service representatives. When I end up using them , out of frustration with a web site, I usually discover that they are really helpful – they don’t want their jobs to become obsolete!

I’m wearing Orchidee Vanille from a sample. It has a lovely gentle presence, that is quite soothing as well.

Tea is a black jasmin tea, or black tea with jasmin. It’s really great, although I can’t quite remember what it’s called.

No, I just got a sample of Orchidée Vanille from a Dutch site. Is it FBW, not for me, as I have a lot of vanilla’s, and this one is sort of a more foody version of Bois d’Iris, of which I also own a partial bottle. It is very gorgeous though, but I would sample first, it’s quite pricy.

SotD: TF Santal Blush–another of my best non-buys. I almost bought a bottle after emptying a sample, but I have just now finished my second sample after four years? I should get another sample to have around. That isn’t to say that it isn’t very, very nice and easy to wear after it settles down, but if I can’t be bothered to dig out a sample, how often would I shift around my bottles to spray it on? I wonder how many FBs I would have if I had to empty two samples before I pulled the trigger on the buy button?

S(ip)otD: MF The de l’Aventurier–one of my favorites from my most recent Mariage Freres haul. A lightly citrus scented black tea (mostly Ceylon, I think) that is just right on many mornings.

I’m in Guerlain Encens Mythique d’Orient which is more drinking- herbal-tea-with-honey-in-a-dusty-old-library than mythical-incense-from-the-East. But I really do enjoy a musty library.

Oh, I would never wear this in the heat. And I use micro doses. I find it can get overwhelming pretty easily. I spilled a sample last year and mopped it up with my wrists and it was just too much. It put me off of it for a long time. But I’m liking it today.

It’s interesting how differently we interpret the same perfume. Though I never wear it from a dab vial in small doses – so maybe mystery comes from the dose, if one can stand the intensity? :) Anyway, you smell great!

Tableau de Parfums (Tauer) Miriam today. The CEO just finished up giving the exams to his classes yesterday so he’ll be home for the next month… where’s the emoticon for “Lord, give me patience”? An eye roll would do, because he will spend the next four weeks wandering around the house thinking up things for me, and for the kids, to do. Grr.

Off to do a bunch of errands. Still haven’t finished the shopping.

IT was still light when I drove home from work yesterday. The moon was so low it looked as if it was perched on some trees in the distance ahead of me as I drove over hills…and in my rearview mirror was a deep orange sun setting also quite low..it was surreal….and breathtakingly beautiful (both the sun and moon…..)

and my new avatar is a cup of cocoa for you Deva…with cream in the shape of a heart :) (sorry, no marshmallows :( !!)

    SOTD = NVC Mohur Extrait

Lovely to infinity! Rose, Cardamom, Sandalwood

    Jo Loves sampling report:

Fresh Sweet Peas – I didn’t expect to like it and I didn’t. If I wanted Sweet Pea, I would get the B&BW cheap shrill version. B&BW forever ruined Sweet Pea for me when it kept burning Sweet Pea oil all day every day for months on end and it permeated the entire mall with a sickly sweet flowery yuckiness.

Green Orange and Coriander – there is hope for this! It is very citrusy tempered by pepper. Out of the 6 I’ve tried to date, this ranks second after Smoked Plum and Leather.

    1) One of my friends FINALLY had her baby- a sweet, pretty little baby boy. He is so, so tiny! :-)

    2) In Jo Malone’s Incense & Cedrat; will layer later on with Black Jade. Have a quick drinks date followed by the musical Allegiance (produced by George Takei)

    3) Outfit of the day: An oversized boho top with lacy hem and sleeves, layer over skinny jeans and short boots.

        2) I love this blouse. It was overpriced at Anthropologie and I waited for 2 price cuts (making that mortgage, you know!) to buy it, but I have to say I do love it and it can hide a host of holiday eating sins! :-)

Not wearing any today, as I just got home late yesterday evening from my annual London jaunt, where I alternated between the generous samples of Rose Green & Rain Cloud I obtained during an earlier, much shorter trip recently. Didn’t get to the Bulstrode Street stockist of Arbole Arbole, unfortunately – indeed didn’t manage any of the fragrance departments in Liberty, Harvey Nicks etc at all – we were focused on areas slightly further afield, & pretty much every market there is at this time of year! Popped in briefly to Penhaligon’s on the King’s Road, & Bloom in Covent Garden, but that was it. Quick visit to Whiteleys in Bayswater, which is soon to under go a massive refurb, where there’s a shop called Beauty Base – all sorts of weird & wonderful stuff can be found here, including fragrances not readily available elsewhere – & guess what? – I smelled Tabu in the flesh (as it were!) for the first time in years. People who know me will remember the ‘instant brothel’ moniker bestowed upon it by a late friend of mine. It didn’t smell nearly as potent as I remember it being, although Diane was never an exponent of the ‘less is more’ policy when it came to applying her all-time favourite perfume. It took me back to our young, free & single days instantly – fond memories.

Sounds like you managed to fit a lot in. The only time I’ve ever worn Tabu was when I was on the dole and it was the best of the cheapest perfumes I could find ( in the early 90s). Just the thought of it makes me depressed – not that the perfume was bad but that life was a bit bleak. You’re in Aberdeen aren’t you?

On the go from when we arrived on the redeye on Thu to when we left early evening Mon! My friend Diane wore Tabu in the mid 70s, so probably reformulated at least once since then. I’m sure it was absent from shelves for a time between then & your unhappier times in the 90s. Yes, I am indeed in Aberdeen – for my sins!

I’m giving D.S. & Durga’s El Cosmico a second try today, and it’s still not working on me – very sour and vinegar-y on my skin. L’Artisan’s Fou D’Absinthe smells the same way on me; maybe I can figure out what note they have in common and avoid it in the future.

I tried one of the Hylnds scents as well (Pale Grey Mountain, Small Black Lake). It didn’t go sour, but there was a sweet floral note (violet? heather?) that I suspect was meant to be subtle that was completely overpowering on me. D.S. & D and I just don’t get along . . .

Rahat Loukoum today . I am going through a revitalised Serge phase after trying a couple more of his perfumes whilst up in Christchurch. I must be tapping into my gurly side ( that was meant to be ‘girly’ but gurly captures it better ) as I tried and liked La Vierge de Fer which was lily-esque and not something I would usually go for ( didn’t buy it ). I must start Christmas shopping soon – for my 14 (15 ish) year old son ( born just a few seconds after midnight New Years Day – where was the champagne on the one occassion I Really needed it ). He’s been fascinatedby American politics and Brexit and I suspect he will get several copies of 1984 from various relatives. Could I buy him perfume? It’s very tempting….Eau de Team Fortress 2.

He would probably like The Watchmen (graphic novel), unless he was unfortunate enough to see the film. Or more in the vein of 1984 is the Russian novel “We”.

Hi everyone. I have been AWOL, doing other stuff that was neither more nor less exciting than blethering about perfume. So I have some catching up to do.

Fri SOTD was Bassomatto “Black Afgano”, which was pleasant but not as long-lived as I’d have liked – also it didn’t ‘speak’ to me if you know what I mean.
Sat SOTD was N-Cigale “Pin Mystic” from a FB. I wanted to see if this pine-and-incense fragrance, so refreshing in Summer, would work in colder weather. I think it does, and it was appropriate to a jaunt down to the mysterious Rollright Stones in the Cotswolds, with the added spookiness of very localised fog and mist around the stone circle itself.
Sun SOTD was Amouage “Interlude Man”, which brings out new wonders every time I wear it. This time the juicy citrus and fresh herbs were prominent all day, and the smokiness more in the background.
SOTD yesterday was Chanel “Jersey”, a perfectly unisex lavender-and-tonka to my nose, fresh and uplifting, and so short-lived that it could only be justified as a room spray. But only in some other Universe would I dream of using a Chanel Exclusif as an air freshener.
Which brings us to today, where I am theoretically in Ormond Jayne “Zizan”, which despite the exotic name turned out to be a common-or-garden variety citrus cologne, aimed at men but not determinedly masculine. I forgot to bring the sample to work for a re-spray, so I am only theoretically wearing it now.

8 more days to go! :^)

Hello, NST! Graduation day! We’re nearly there! Today, then two more days, and then I can just let this. year go!

Ummm. So. It’s like this. Oh dear….if I tell you something now, do I still have to tell Donatella later? Robin, I need a size 2 font so I can whisper this: I bought Galop. I weakened, yes I did. I caved. I succumbed, but I glory! I loved him from the first, I loved him through many encounters, and I love him still.

Off to face the day, wearing black because my academic robes are maroon and crimson, and nothing but black looks OK under them. Oh, and I’m casually trailing Galop, of course. Whoever sits beside me on the stage will be very lucky, in my opinion.

La Peau Douce by Jolie Laide for me. I’m liking these samples…there’s something old school and rich. Notes are listed as Royal Hawaiian Sandalwood, Clove Absolute, Nutmeg Absolute, Saffron Absolute, Guiaic Wood, and Patchouli.

I’m wearing Violettes du Czar, so far – not surprisingly – my favourite of the Oriza Legrand fragrances. Initially, it smelled to me like a cruder, more robust Apres L’Ondee – but it seemed to disappear so quickly. Did I spray too little? Or is this how it is?

In other violet-related news, I’ve bought the Kurkdjian violet soap bubble thingy, as this is exactly the kind of thing I would buy. The bubbles are very decent and smell (close up) of violet candy. I’m very happy with it, but do not expect luxurious packaging.
