Thursday scent of the day 12/8

Posted by Robin on 8 December 2016 230 Comments

brownies

It's Almost-Friday! Plus, Brownie Day (no complaints there). What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm continuing my week of 2016 purchases with Tauer Perfumes / Tauerville Rose Flash.

Reminder: 12/9 will be Best Buy Friday — wear your favorite fragrance purchase of 2016. If you didn't buy anything this year, pick a favorite from a prior year.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    brownies..yum!
Happy 3 to my master teacher who stretches my heart a bit fuller with every breath she takes. I’m so grateful to know you.

Today is my little Monkey’s second birthday. She stretches my heart a bit fuller with every breath she takes.
Yesterday during my ‘vacation” I went to the dentist, got my hair cut, and looked at the beautiful windows at BG. Went to see Disney’s Moana. I stopped into Bergdorfs and got my self a YSL glossy stain. And did some sniffing. I tried on Myths by Amouage, and Shanghai Lily. Both beautiful. I also sniffed Neroli Outrenoir, there was nothing noir about it. And did a small dab of RP L’Insomnuit

Tea is homemade Chai. SOTD one of my best purchases for 2016 Alahiiiiiine in the Solid compact.

SOTD is another of my 2016 purchases, the now discontinued Tubéreuse by Goutal. Lovely and slightly fierce, on a cold an windy Dutch day.
Tea is Paris s’éveille by Betjeman and Barton.

It’s very similar to Gardénia Passion, but Tubéreuse is just a tad softer. I really enjoy it, and I happened upon a not so expensive bottle on ebay.

SotD: SL Boxeuses, which is one of my best non-purchases of 2016. I still like it very much, but I have only dented my decant.

YUMMM. Boxeuses is absolutely delicious and I’d almost forgotten how sexy. I have been skirting around my SL collection, waiting for this weather, and your mention made me plunge back in. Thank you, monkeytoe. Now I can begin to immerse myself in those SL winter scents I’ve been skirting while holding onto summer: Fumerie Turque, 5:00 Au Gingembre, Ambre Sultan, Un Bois Vanille Fille de Aiguilles, Cuir Mauresque, Chergui, Santal Majuscule, Sarrasins, Vetiver Oriental…

Scentless so far – I slept badly, and although it’s just super-windy at this point the weather forecast today is for snow followed by freezing rain, so I’m working from home (in jammies!) today. (Autocorrect made that “jimmies”, and now I’m picturing myself coated in them.) Will choose a soothing scent in a bit – Philosykos or Barbara Bui, most likely.

I am SO GRATEFUL that schools decided to close last night! As a result, I, too, am in jammies–although I’m realizing I could use a few new pairs (they’re not as cute as they used to be)! Not gonna go in search of them today, though!

Marjorie Rose, were you guys snowed out?
We don’t get snow here, but it floods. It is almost impossible to get our district to close when we are flooded out. Glad your district put safety first instead of attendance. Stay warm and dry.

Not yet. The snow is predicted to arrive any moment now. The big risk in Oregon is that if it gets icy, there’s no equipment to thoroughly prep or clear the roads. And we are expecting the snow to become freezing rain at some point in the afternoon. SO, they wisely decided to not start school just to have to leave early (which is always a total stressor for everyone involved)!

Yes, that’s smart. I have been stuck at my school several times because they decided to keep school in and then to get stuck there. A huge mess! Stay warm and I hope you guys don’t have to make it up. Hopefully you all have inclement weather days built in!

Eww for sure. The snow has arrived and the wind hasn’t let up yet so it’s snowing sideways now. It’s pretty, but I know what comes next (that half-inch coating of ice from freezing rain on top of a half-inch of snow) and am hoping the forecast is correct that temps will go up to near 40 overnight and melt all that lovely, sparkly stuff. I’m dreaming of a DRY Christmas! :)

Chocolatemarzipan, you crack me up … but you might need help. ;)

I remembered scent today and put on Coco EDP, which is what I meant to wear yesterday.

Tonight the husband and I are seeing the Miyazaki film Spirited Away at a nearby cinema. It’s one of our favorites and it’ll be so nice to see it on the big screen. :)

Spirited Away is a masterpiece! I am jealous that you can watch it for the first time. The protagonist is a little girl, but my 13 and 15 year old boys could watch it over and over again.

Fashiony by Smell Bent came out in 2015 as a limited edition. I bought one of the travel sizes to try and fell in love. Before I could order a full bottle it was gone. Then last June Smell Bent had their garage sale and Fashiony was available again. Unfortunately the full bottles disappeared fast, so I could only get more travel sizes. Still, this is probably my second favorite buy of 2016.

Ack! That photo has me salivating like Pavlov’s dog!!

Gorgeous brisk day here! I heard rumors of a polar vortex brewing, which I’m sure most normal folks are dreading. Being an oddball, this forecast has me jumping up and down with joy!

I’m luxuriating in my standard cold weather gear of flannel button down, baggy jeans, and Birkenstock sandals. SOTD is a couple of drops of Amber Flush in my hair and a double blast whammy of SL Chergui.

I have a lot of miscellaneous things to do today, which bores me to tears. Not really understanding why I can’t make a living day dreaming. T-Rex has discovered she can make a living by being very cute, occasionally obedient, and regularly patrolling the perimeter for anoles, cats, and potential trespassers. She will often take a break from this gruelling schedule to drop her Kong toy in my lap and furiously wag her tail. What a life!!

This is the best time of year here and I thoroughly enjoy being able to wear really deep orientals without risking asphyxiating myself and those within a 10′ range. I’m not wearing anything yet, but brownie day is tempting me food-wise. I had already promised to bake something.
It’s freakin’ windy out there and I still have to bring my potted plants in. I really miss my old house with that huge back room with windows that I could close off from the cats. Here I will have to haul all 100+ of them inside and through the house to the garage, then back out on Saturday. It’s supposed to freeze again early next week, so I will be complaining again then.
PSA for anybody who hasn’t taken advantage of the Stash value set of an oil and an edp from Ulta. It’s on sale today for $38.50!

I was traveling over the past few weeks and haven’t been able to post! Took advantage of the dollar / euro rates in Paris and got some early Xmas (or very, very late birthday? I will use any excuse!). perfume gifts for myself. SOTD is Chanel No. 19 Poudre, which I somehow had never smelled before! Also brought home full bottles of Mugler Chyrprissime and Le Galion Snob. The Mugler bottle comes in the most gorgeous box! Also got a sample of Isabey Lys Noir at Jovoy. Based on the notes, I should hate it but it’s a beautiful lily.

I might be one of the very few dessert-loving people on earth not tempted by brownies. They’re okaaaay, I guesss, but if you give me the choice between brownies and any other chocolate baked good, I’d skip the brownies. Shrug. I dunno. Maybe it’s a texture thing?

In planning for tomorrow, I had to go back and look through the damage polls to remember what I bought in 2016 – only three full bottles (one a backup of beloved Safari!) plus a handful of minis/decants. Today I’m in Black Cashmere again.

I love all the brownies, but my kids were never fans until one day I absentmindedly added an extra egg to the batter. It baked up less fudgy, about half-way between a brownie and chocolate cake. Yummy.

The only brownies I like are the “Baker’s Chocolate One Bowl” brownies (recipe found in the box). They are super ooey-gooey and a dense hit of chocolate flavor. The usual made-from-a-mix varieties are sub-par and not worth the calories, IMO.

Should probably comment that I have eaten some brownies that other people RAVED about, that just left me thinking, “Ehh, I’d rather have had a vanilla cupcake.” I don’t think it’s only experience with subpar brownies that has shaped my opinion, in other words.

Brownies always put me in mind of cake that has been left out in the sun or on the bench for a couple of days with that dry, crusty first bite then soft insides. Don’t like them.

    Happy “snow” day!
As mentioned above by others in the PNW, we are expecting inclement weather any moment now. . . so I am home and not-teaching, which is fine by me!

Yesterday, I wore Ambrosine (Francessca dell’Oro), and recieved THREE compliments that I smelled good! Mostly, folks don’t say anything, so that was nice. I made an exception in my non-buying year (or two) and bought a bottle when it was 25% off at Indiescents last week. No regrets! Although, now I officially have TOO MANY bottles to fit in my little perfume vanity. Some day, something must be done!

Snow days are magic, especially for teachers. :) And yay for your scent compliments. It’s wonderful when people say nice things. I wonder how often people have something nice to say but don’t speak up. I think that might be my resolution for next year: always offer a compliment when one comes to mind. And I’m considering a no-buy year for 2017 because my vanity tray is getting quite full. Eeep!

I compliment strangers all the time – their bag, dress, color of their clothes, hair, their perfume (rarest actually since I didn’t want to be creepy and sniff people intently)…and actually, I’ve been known to call, email or instant message the facilitator of a very well run meeting to compliment him/her and would also sometimes write unsolicited notes to managers. It also goes both ways as I wouldn’t hesitate to suggest how to improve something.

I love compliments. The other day I complimented a patient who came to the clinic, she smelled really great (I rarely compliment), I asked her what she was wearing; she didn’t speak any english or french and had her daughter with her to translate, they have discussed for more then 5 minutes about the perfume in their own language and they told me it was Coco. I suspect it was something else though, it didn’t smell like Coco to me.

    Happy Thursday, all
    1) We were promised ice, sleet and snow here in Portland. Instead, so far, we have a lot of extremely cold, freezing wind. Fortunately warming centers were open last night and homeless people did take advantage of this.

    2) Since it was supposed to storm, am at home, working. Scent of the day is Lord of Misrule shower cream from last night from working out at the gym(run outside+weights+sauna). Will be brewing coffee soon, and then perhaps making a stew in the slow cooker.

I think I’m secretly a horrible person. My gym/community center often does double-duty as an emergency shelter, and I always feel put out when I have to miss my workout due to folks needing someplace warm or non-flooded to sleep! I know it’s super self-centered, and yet I always regret missing my workout.

Brownie Day? Oops! I just made gingerbread last night so I am set for treats right now. SOTD is Un Bois Vanille.

I took an online survey last night about “luxury” goods–watches costing 5K, handbags more than 3K, that sort of thing. Their criteria for “luxury” perfume was $130 a bottle. I thought that was really low, as $130 strikes me as about the average price I pay. Needless to say, they got quite a bit of information from me about my “luxury” perfume purchases.

With all those exclusive lines for already expensive perfumes, I don’t think even twice the price named would put it into the “luxury” category. It should be at least $350 and up (though, I’d go even higher to compare to those watches and bags).

For those of you who can’t wear shimmer eyeshadow, I just saw a review of the new Smashbox eye shadow palettes (the cover shot ones) – they have two that are all or mostly matte, one of which is rainbow colors (it’s called Bold)! The formula got good reviews too.

Today I’m wearing Le Labo Ylang 49. I am not a fan of ylang ylang by itself. However, the names of the Le Labo fragrances don’t necessarily mean that it smells like what it is called … so I put it on blind! First day of school holidays for my son…so no school till February. Hurray. I can say goodbye to washing his drab, depressing, stinky, synthetic school uniform …ugh. Will wear California Chocolate today and then later a bit of Dame Black Flower and see what happens…probably go into a coma.

Do you have a choice to get the uniform from elsewhere that uses better materials? I went to Catholic school and that meant uniforms. My mom insisted on sewing the uniforms herself (she is very talented). There was a lot of hemming (ha! pun not intended) and hawing but the school finally relented.

No. The shirt must be a kind of nylon polo shirt that slowly goes grey and pilled after the first wash, and the jacket must be black and maroon fleece that shows every dog hair and piece of fluff, and the pants have to be grey and shapeless and two inches too short after the first term. Any variation would result in a detention. All high school kids in NZ have to wear a school uniform…And they must be ugly and smell like damp washing left in a basket. The entire education system would fall apart otherwise. Once a term they get mufti day where they are allowed freedom to dress like a functioning human being but this is exceptionally risky and not to be encouraged.

My son is 14, six foot one, and a hundred and ninety pounds. He is required to wear a uniform also. Obviously, we have to buy him men’s sizes, so I buy him as close as I can get to what is required. Luckily, no one has said anything yet.

We all had to wear uniforms (and those were public schools), and I hated those that were sold in stores, so my grandmother sewed it for me and I proudly wore it for my last 2 years in school.

Hi, all. Friday morning here, and I’m wearing my best buy of 2016, Ambre Narguile. This is not a good buy in terms of price, just the deep, on-going pleasure it gives. How I love smelling like apple crumble! And when I analyse that sentence, how odd it sounds! Not something I could say anywhere but down the rabbit hole.

In other news (not really, I just feel self important and want to make An Announcement), I continue to flirt with Galop, and here’s the thing: he flirts right back. Deep attraction here! But this relationship will be ever unrequited. I can’t have a sample (asked) and I don’t need a bottle. I think we’re doomed, he and I, to occasional encounters full of meaningful “what might have beens”, never the solid, comfortable familiarity that would follow if he moved into a place on my perfume shelves. Oh well.

24 Faubourg for me today, one of my 2015 favourite buys. I’ll progress to 2016 for the evening, and will bathe myself in Myrrhe Imperiale. I’d like to mention again how wondeful it was of my beloved to brave the cosmefics department of David Jones in Sydney to get it for me – it’s not his natural milieu :)

I could never understand scheduling anything on the end of December or the beginning of January! Our lives are stressful as is; most of us face numerous problems and hardships – can we at least have some joy in the year around winter holidays?!! Who are those managers who do that? Are they human? Do they have families or at least friends?

Anyway, I hope you’ll accomplish everything you have to – and will still find time both for participating in community projects, and enjoying the season.

Sold some childrens clothing on ebay…shipping came out to as much as I sold them for! plus ebay fees – so I actually paid for somebody to take the clothes :))) huh, lesson for me :) Is there a cheaper shipping option than USPS?
I did not put on any fragrance since my nose is still stuffed.

USPS is the cheapest for light packages. You should set shipping as “Calculated” and enter the exact package weight below it. That way the buyer sees ahead of time how much it is to ship to them and ebay automatically adds that cost to their total. Or if you offer free shipping (which it seems you did), set your price/starting bid high enough to cover shipping, fees, and make a little yourself. Hopefully that will help you make a little money. I’ve paid ebayers to take my stuff before. ;-)

    SOTD is “Korrigan” by Lubin.

    Top: juniper berries, saffron and cognac;
    Mid: lavender, ambrette (musk mallow) and whiskey;
Base: cedar, oud, leather, vetiver and musk.

I wanted to love this, but instead ‘just’ like it. It’s cozy and a bit milky and lasts half a day – i.e. not long enough for me. It sort of reminds me of a watered down “Lignum Vitae” (BeauFort London), which has the same half-day life span but at least throws some more spice into the mix. Money saved!

Hey, baby, it’s cold outside (yes, I’ve been going to numerous holiday concerts this week) – Brrrr! I’m all bundled up getting ready to go out and find that perfect Christmas tree before the snow and even more cold arrives. The enticing scent of The Vagabond Prince Enchanted Forest is wafting up despite my multiple layers, and I can already smell the balsams, firs, and pine needles I will soon be amongst, the woody twigs crunching in the snow beneath my feet, and are there berries hidden somewhere deep within the branches?

Got to do some sniffing today: Galop, the MFKs and the Armani Preve line. Standouts were Prive Cuir Amethyste, which broke my heart by turning to cumin on my skin; and MFK Lumiere Noir Pour Femme, which for some reason I didn’t try on skin. That one will require a revisit, it could qualify as anniversary gift material in February. Galop was pretty, but rather light and a bit too floral for my taste.

Just an observation: I’ve bought 3 brands of peppermint bark and 2 peppermint mochas recently, and only one tasted of peppermint. Please tell me the evil regulatory forces are not vilifying peppermint oil. :(

    Have a pleasant evening, all.

I wasn’t feeling well in the morning and wasn’t sure if I’d go to the office – so I didn’t put any perfume on while I was dressing up for the online meeting. So when I decided to go, I left house and only at the office realized that not only I wasn’t wearing anything, but I even didn’t have any stray sample in my purse! I have no idea how it happened! Now I’ll have to suffer scentless for 3 more hours :(

I’ll probably go and read everybody’s comments and live vicariously through NST’s readers :)

Since I was determined to limit purchases (and was mostly successful) this year, I can’t really comment on a Best Buy. I will confess, however, my one real regret is NOT buying that bottle of Fleur de Chine that practically had to pried from my greedy, clutching fingers a few months back…
