Thursday scent of the day 12/1

Posted by Robin on 1 December 2016 172 Comments

See by Chloé bunny keyring

Rabbit rabbit rabbit! It's December. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in L'Eau de Chloé, by Michel Almairac.

Reminder: on 12/2, wear a perfume by Michel Almairac, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the See by Chloé leather keyring was $110 back in 2012 and is probably impossible to find now.

Jacomo Parfum Rare, a neglected late-eighties gem, the dirtiest chypre you ever met: spicy carnation, filthy patchouli, dank incense, and tons of guttural oakmoss. It is so fantastic.

SO does not sound like my thing (except maybe the carnation), but I adore your descriptors. Guttural oakmoss indeed!

The weird thing is that once upon a time, most if not all commercial scents had at least one unattractive component, which made them “realer” in a way and threw the rest of the composition into sharp relief: unbridled prettiness is boring unless you have something to contrast it with. Many base notes (musk, castoreum, oakmoss, patchouli, lots of woods) are not inherently beautiful, but they become beautiful in context — and some of us love difficult notes of themselves, the way some people love bitter and sour flavours. Parfum Rare has an overdose of the unbeautiful, and paradoxically it becomes intensely beautiful because of it.

I beg to differ….oakmoss and patchouli e.o.s unto themselves are glorious to my nose :)

          I understand.

I just love “guttural,” maybe the same way I love galbanum. :)

Yes, it’s like how the most beautiful and handsome faces have a disproportionate or crooked feature.

FYI, one can still find this beautiful perfume on ebay at a range of prices.

Wonderful! The jolie laide paradox in perfume form. When I have too much sweetness or richness in food I crave bitter arugula and kale and dill pickles. :)

I wasn’t wearing anything because working from bed with a cough and lost voice, but that inspired me to put on some Silences (half appropriate!). Parfum Rare sounds like it needs an advanced perfumist to handle it!

CdR today. I’ve stopped crying, so it’ no longer raining ;)
Actually had a lot of fun yesterday at the boss’s bday party. We all went to Dave & Busters and I played many more games than I thought I would. Lots of shooting hoops – we had a bit of a company contest going on – and I screamed repeatedly at one of the scary 3D first person shooter games. That was endlessly amusing to many coworkers because apparently it’s very easy to scare me. There is a drawing each year to decide who arranges the boss’s party so the employees in charge of the event made sure everything was taken care of so no babysitting involved on my part.

Back to business today though. First of the month = reports.

My mom brought them to our house for Thanksgiving…do go to Aldi’s as my mom tells me the holiday sweets are much less expensive than Trader Joes….she paid 1.99 each for everything (dark chocolate covered marzipan, lebkuchen, pfefferneuese, dark chocolate covered raspberry filled spiced gingerbread hearts and spice cookies whose European name escapes me at the moment) except for the marzipan stoellen which was 4.99 (and at that price it is a steal as well !)…

I really do try to eat healthy but when it is brought into the house I devour it….and I think I am also stress eating !

I wore Cuir de l’Aigle Russe yesterday and it’s very lovely. I’ve only sniffed the Czar de Violette or Violette du Czar from the vial, and it was very nice as well. They do a sample set of all of them for around €38,-. Although my guess is that this is more my line than yours, if you know what I mean.

I can’t wear fragrance to the office anymore (some co-workers with bad asthma, plus it’s a medical office), so have to be content with evenings and the other four days of the week (luckily just work MWF). Plus, it’s my only Michel Almairac.

It’s nice! I mean, nice tropical white florals are kind of a dime a dozen, but still, I like it, and I agree it would be great in a cream or oil format!

SOTD is Baruti “Nooud”. This got a lot of attention for how the perfumer managed to make a perfume with no oud whatsoever in it smell just like oud. Notes are: oud (but it isn’t! ha!) and woody notes. Longevity is ho hum. I am neither an oud fan nor an oudophobe, so I don’t care. Next!

Wearing vintage Hermès Calèche obtained on a recent thrift foray. I transferred it into a spray bottle– a new campaign of mine for all those minis whose contents go unworn because they’re splash rather than spray. My husband finds it funny that I requested decant supplies for Xmas rather than new perfumes, but he’s willing, so….

I haven’t a single Michel Almairac in my stash to wear tomorrow, so I’ll lurk to see all of yours. Have a good weekend, all.

AAACK! I wish I could have remembered the “rabbit, rabbit, rabbit” thing. I could really use some luck this month, three months into a long slog of a job search where one of my best hopes has been stringing me along for 2.5 months to see if they can find someone better.

I’m wearing Erik Kormann’s “Eau de Froehliche” (No. 2) this morning in celebration of December and in defiance of the “no scents” policy at my mind-numbing temp job. My daughter popped straight out of bed this morning (on a school day!), ran to the stairs, and announced that it’s the first day of December. So I put this on, as it’s not a sillage monster and doesn’t last forever, so I figure I can get away with it.

Right now I’m sitting in a ray of sun filtered through one of the outside offices and trying to get a tiny bit of Vitamin D and hope after a terrible, gloomy, rainy November (and October…who are we kidding…we set a rain record in October here in our little city at the end of the Earth). I’m trying not to miss Germany, where cost of living was affordable, there were jobs in my profession, and the Christmas markets are in full swing right now.

Hello, all. I’ve been out for a few days, for no particular reason, just not feeling chatty, I think. Oddly, though, I’ve loved reading your chattiness. So. Last night on my way home, I sprayed myself with a Michael Kors thing from a square silver bottle, and thought,”Huh!” This morning, I can still smell it, and I’m thinking, “Mmmmmm!” I’m rather surprised at how beguiling this (whatever it is) is in its last minutes. But my proper SoTD, of course, will be something else. What, I do not know. I am doing a major dither about what wear, smell of and eat. Choice: not always a blessing…it’s nice to be back. Be well, all.

Good luck with the selling. I was able to sell off a bunch of old toys and clothes that my daughter had outgrown when we moved home in August — getting that giant, beautiful wooden dollhouse (that she played with maybe twice in five years) out of my home office / guest room was a lovely feeling. Sending her wooden kitchen to a good home felt nice, too…until it was immediately replaced with a much larger piano. ;-) Growing up…hard to believe.

I’ve finally put out a tray of winter perfumes as I’ve been wanting to do for each season, yet haven’t. I had to clean the tarnish off my silver platter and then it was easy enough. I’ll be wearing Nahema today. We have our work Christmas function this evening, it has a 70s theme. I’ve dug out some clothes that look a bit 70s, and putting them all together certain,y gives me the right look for the decade that taste forgot. SOTD Catbird Kitten solid perfume. And it is VERY solid. They also make a candle and I think this is just a tiny candle without the wick. It smells like a milky, waxy, musky, rose-violet lipstick thing. I have to scrape it out and melt it between my fingers to apply it. But it’s a fun scent.

        Day One = Ananda !

I unscrewed the bottle to smell it and it is a fruity floral. I looked it up on Fragrantica and the base notes include vanilla, musk and mimosa which I didn’t get at all and need to wear the perfume to possibly detect these. The bottles are all splash so I need to line up my sample atomizers to spray wear. I struggled to open door #1 and had to resort to a pair of scissors to outline the scored opening…and I found out afterwards that the entire box can be opened and I could have had my pick of bottles and can peek on which perfume comes next, but I won’t as I am looking forward to being surprised!
