Wednesday scent of the day 11/23

Posted by Robin on 23 November 2016 237 Comments

tap pant

It's Hump Day, and it's Thanksgiving Eve! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing Lush Silky Underwear. It was $1 per ml when I bought it. I keep hoping they'll bring it back, along with Flying Fox.

Reminder: on 11/25 we're doing Black Friday cheap thrills, edition 3 —  as we head into the holiday spending season, wear something that costs $50 or below, double bonus points if it costs $25 or below. No points for wearing something expensive that you bought cheaply via a sample or decant or somesuch! We're trying to find real bargains here.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Sheer Romance tap pant in peach is $175 (ack! that's a bottle of perfume, at least!) at Between The Sheets.

I am trying to do cheap trills week, so I am wearing CK Eternity today. This was one of my first perfume loves , I have so many memories attached to it.

Those pants are lovely. I discovered the joy of silk pants quite recently, but like the ones shown above, they have a habit of being prohibitively expensive.

What is it about Rose Delight that makes me want to bathe in it? My wrists are enrobed in it, because I couldn’t resist it after making a decant of it. This counts as a cheap thrill. I know it’s an oil, but it’s just 25 CHF for 50 mL.

Closer to my head sits Daim Blond–not cheap by my standards, but it is by many of yours!

Rose Delight has the same effect on me. I don’t even use it as a perfume; I use it in place of lotion all over my arms and legs :)

Also mixes well with lotion — I mix it with Cerave for my arms & legs.

It doesn’t smell any different to me! (I tried it in a job earlier this week.) If I had realized they were simply repackaging, I would not have stocked up like that >.<

    SOTD is Frapin “Caravelle Épicée”.

    Top: nutmeg and coriander;
    Mid: chili pepper, pepper, caraway and guaiac wood;
Base: sandalwood, amber, patchouli and tobacco.

This one goes on with a disconcerting note of plasticene – not a note I detest, but it doesn’t add much to my world. Once this burns off it’s fine, a sort of mildly boozy, mildly spicy, mildly woodsy perfume. Do I need it in my life? No, I do not. I have, or have tried, other things that cover those bases better than this one. Lasting power is only moderate, else it might have got longlisted.

I’m working my way through my samples this week. This one and yesterday’s Terre de Sarment are fine, but that’s not enough for me to buy them as I already have an embarrassing number of ‘fine’ perfumes.

Wearing a dab of cozy, amber-y Agent Provocateur Strip (discontinued a couple years back, I think…found it online for a song). Perfect for the cold rainy day we’re having here. Oh my but those tap pants are lovely! I just visited that site and I think I should stay far, far away…also, as a confirmed lingerie addict, I can’t believe I had never heard of it!

Oooh, yes Journelle is dangerous! They are having a sale right now though, I think it’s 15% off $100 or more and the percentage off goes up the more you spend…or maybe I shouldn’t tell you that ha! I know the exact Mimi Holliday set you are referring to, so gorgeous and so NOT in my budget either lol :-(

I’ve been wearing cheap thrill Perles de Lalique on one hand and discounted but not cheap Theo Fennell Scent on the other. They are somewhat similar and complement each other because Perles is slightly thin and sharp, while Scent is richer but a little flat. I’ve had vintage AG Passion parfum beside my computer all week and sniff it occasionally, planning to switch, but haven’t yet.

Why thank you! Although the prices have increased everything is reasonable and I would recommend just about all of the products…..last year I bought 12 tangerine lip balms because they were 2 dollars a piece and 100% natural and the best thing going for my chapped lips…I think they are now a dollar more but still reasonably priced…body washes and soaps are good too as well as the variety of essential and fragrance oils….

I’m still enjoying the musky civety drydown of Salome from last night. But after showering I will put on some of Amma’s perfume (rose and sandalwood oil). I bought it many years ago for $40 and some of the proceeds went to one of Ammaji’s many charities. I met someone in India who was an ashram work dog for many years for Amma, so I have mixed feelings about that organization, but the perfume is really divine.

Hahaha, no it’s the hugging saint. I guess my real Amma was one of those too :)

After my shower I used a ton of Smokey Poppy scented lotion from the body shop and found I didn’t need to wear perfume. The scent on that stuff is very strong but in a nice way. It reminds me of an old school chypre and I like it very much.

Wearing Modern Muse today. IMO, Estee Lauder puts out some really great fragrances. And the best part, they don’t break the bank.
Although MM isn’t my favorite EL fragrance, (that would probably be Sensuous Noir) it is still nicely done.

I recently saw a nature show on big cats. In one segment, a fellow was talking about pheromones that cats respond to and sprayed three tree stumps with three different perfumes. The ocelot that they were testing went absolutely nuts over the stump that had Estee Lauder on it. He didn’t specify which particular perfume he used.

I saw the big cats nature show and I think the scents were CK Obsession (for men), EL Beautiful, and a generic-looking bottle that was said to be a Chanel. Perhaps it was a decant, or maybe a copycat. >^..^<

I saw it too and thought it looked like Beautiful, but I wasn’t sure. I swear they showed the guy spraying Obsession on the chosen post, but since I was squeeing over cuddly ocelot I could be wrong.

Whatever it is, it is also in Sonoma Scent Studio Rose Musc. The first time I wore that, my semi feral barn cat spent 20 minutes sucking on my arm purring away with his eyes closed, slobbering all over. Kitty paradise in spray form. :-)

I don’t do that, I have no wish to be cruel or complicate things. But I don’t want to look drab or feel insecure either, so I like to be polished and on top form. I really, sincerely enjoy the company of all my past significant others, but there is always an element of vulnerability, I think.

We also have family friends (one on each side) like that, both married now with kids and there are no issues. I remember Jane Fonda talking about divorce once and how come they all get together for holidays. She said: “Gather the clan!” and made the point that these are people you have cared about – probably still care about – deeply. I really liked that sentiment and the generosity of spirit (I do realise things aren’t always that easy, but we shouldn’t make them more difficult than they need to be.)

          • Elisa P says:

True. Not always easy. I guess it depends on how it ended and one’s own resilience, but that is a great sentiment and something to strive for in any relationship, really.

Penhaligon’s Elixir today, to keep me company as I tidy up for festivities tomorrow. Can you prep green beans ahead of time? We’re not casserole-ing them, since together with the salad they’re one of the spots of crunchy green relief in Thanksgiving dinner, and they won’t take long to sauté, but it would be nice to get them washed and trimmed ahead of time.

Here’s an update on my adventure yesterday with Rihanna Rogue. It started out super jammy sweet. I understand it’s comparison to Botegga Venetta which I’ve sampled a few times. I agree with reviews, it’s not nearly as refined as BV and is definitely more brassy and seriously tenacious. I look forward to wearing it again, it will be a good cold-weather scent choice when I want to be just a little bit bolder.
SOTD Marnie, soft, pretty and easy to wear.

SotD = Hiris, which gives me a feeling of steadiness and centered-ness. My magical never-ending sample vial of Hiris is finally empty so I went FB, no regrets. Well, just one. I wish I had bought the blue bottle.

Today I will spend all day with my mum. We will tidy and clean her already spotless house, and I will bake two pumpkin pies. Late this evening we will set 12 places at the table with my paternal grandmother’s Noritake Nuana from the early 1950s. My grandfather was in the US Navy at that time and brought the set back from Japan. We only use these dishes for Thanksgiving because my mum doesn’t really like the pattern, and my paternal grandparents were beloved but persnickety.

The dishes are a fine reminder that after a good dinner one can forgive anybody, even one’s own relations. Or so says Oscar Wilde.

We must think a bit alike, in food and fragrance and literary favorites. ;)

Long ago, when I lived in a house where I was the only one who liked pumpkin pie, I baked it without a crust in a baking dish or 8 small ramekins. I reduced the amount of sugar by half and increased the spices a bit. Then I would eat it every day for a week. Pure delight without a bit of guilt.

I started with a moderate application of Tauer Un Elle pour Maroc, or is it Maroc pour Elle? Anyway, it smelled great, but got to the incense and disappeared. That’s never happened to me before. This is a new sample. Did he change the formulation? So topped it off with Commodity Wool, from the little spray I keep in my purse. This is a very interesting smell, and I like it more and more.

Wow, Le Maroc pour Elle is nuclear on me. Even my husband comments on its potency and he usually doesn’t say anything.

Andy told me he did have to reformulate it several years ago to reduce the jasmine levels because of IFRA, but I bought a new bottle last year and it smells fine.

I was rereading Kate Chopin’s The Awakening the other day and taking notes of all the scent references as part of some research for a bit of writing . I found around 15 of them: the sea, lemon and orange branches, roses in bloom, jasmine, mysterious and witchy night-scented gardens, crushed geranium leaves, rose petals and musky pinks. So, i thought I’d do a Chocolate Marzipan and try and blend some oils ….and sadly I ended up with Hurricane Katrina. Typical. The good news is I got the funding for a month at Auckland Museum so now I will be able to read the diaries of the 1840s missionary who collected plant specimens and made a reference to the Grand Maori Perfume. Cheap thrill Dark Horse rollerball oil.

It’s one of the books I first read at university when I did American Studies so I had memories of all the scent refs. It is one of the classics … Languid and sensuous, great imagery but also rather overwrought from a modern perspective…so you have to adjust for that …. A bit like watching the movie Death in Venice. But I like it, and Edith Wharton, and all those gals. Plus, she wrote it as a single mother ( widow) with six kids and that, in itself, is impressive. The Storm is a great story.

      “so I thought I’d do a chocolatemarzipan”…..hee!hee!

don’t give up on your blend…give it time to marinate and you will see it evolve and change….and if you don’t like it within a month or two tweek it with more essential oils….sometimes it helps to add more top notes (usually a citrus of some sort)…

you brought back a flood of memories….Death in Venice required reading in high school and I loved it…the Awakening required reading in college (and loved that one too)…my favorite author when I was in my young adulthood was Thomas Hardy..now that i am much older I find his and some of my other favorite authors (Warton, Bronte sisters, etc) too dark for my tastes….my favorite author now is Alexander McCall Smith…I am on my third round of the Isabel Dalhousie series….his books are lighthearted and whimsical but also incredibly philosphical…..

and congrats! and you smell good (LOVE Dark Horse and that is a great cheap thrill for sure!!!)

Yes and maybe we can call it Break the Bank Friday! I went to the Frederic Malle boutique downtown and the SA showed me, and I tried it on skin, The Night = Oud + Portrait of a Lady (- Patchouli). Wow! And break the bank expensive … I think it was a little over $800 for 50 mLs in a nice presentation case.

Oh, and speaking of seasonal, a Montreal friend made a trip to Yves Rocher to test the remaining Noel scents. The standout to her was Cranberry & Almond, but Clementine & Spices was pleasant if fleeting.

I worked in a hospital that had archaic rules so sneakers weren’t allowed and uniforms and shoes had to be white. This was the late 90s early 2000s. Surprised they didn’t make us wear caps!

Lol!Or capes!I do love those old uniforms though. They look special and regal.I have to add, having the latest technology and an AWESOME Ophthalmologist,we are able to do cataract surgeries with lens implants in less than 15 minutes these days.I was a first year student in 1996,so I remember the oldschool uniforms too!Lol.

Ha! I could do cape, not cap. Yes, there’s a certain romance to those days of yore, ala Call the Midwife. And I’m sure you could pull it off better than I could ???? 15 minutes!? Good to know for future reference.

I’m wearing En Passant this morning as I have a dental appointment this afternoon and need to wear something discreet. I made pumpkin custards yesterday (like pie but without the crust) and will take some around to a couple of neighbors.

I made a little one tonight inadvertently, after the filling wouldn’t quite fit in my crust. Very tasty, and much less hassle than making the blasted crust. It would be nice with a gingersnap or piece of shortbread, too. Hope things went smoothly at the dentists.

    SOTD = Chanel Coromandel

Today’s my Friday and it feels like one! I even expected our cafeteria to have the normal Friday stuff!

There was talk of Hiram Green Arbole Arbole last week. Two reviews came out today from Chemist in the Bottle and The Scented Hound. I smelled something very different but loved it in the way I smelled it – green, earthy. I did not detect any vanilla or benzoin. The next time I wear it, detecting either or both will be icing on the cake!

I love it when a day feels like a Friday. :) When I was part of a computer programming staff years ago, we liked to sneak in secret programming language that noted today as a “logical Friday.” Geeky good times.

I’m doing a week of Cheap Thrills, or at least five days of them. Today it’s Molinard Habanita, the modern edp. I got mine in a swap (thanks, Elisa!), but I see that it’s widely available for less than $50. It is definitely not for everyone, but its spicy, smoky, powdery loveliness, and serious sillage, are certainly for me.

Monday was the mighty Queen Latifah Queen, and Tuesday the less mighty but still plenty interesting, and probably more universally wearable, Queen of Hearts.

Will now read everyone else’s posts. I’m wondering whether any other celebrators of American Thanksgiving made pie tonight. I made a gluten-and-dairy-free pumpkin, and remembered why I never used to make pie even before the dietary restrictions.
