Tuesday scent of the day 11/15

Posted by Robin on 15 November 2016 255 Comments

Orbits Tatara Gold cast iron teapot

It's Tuesday. It's cold, and I did not get quite enough sleep. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm warming up with i Profumi di Firenze Ambra del Nepal and Mariage Frères Chandernagor.

Reminder: 11/18 will be No Brainer Friday — wear one of your seasonal "no brainer / go to" fragrances. Thanks to SheriG for the suggestion!

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Orbits Tatara Gold cast iron teapot is $90 at Teavana.

My second no brainer of the week is also one of the most beautiful scents I own – Nuit de Tubereuse by L’Artisan. It always seems right, no matter what, and is one of my most worn.

        Glad you’re enjoying Dzongkha.
TKs did have NdT on their website a couple of weeks ago but it’s gone now. Might be worth checking a few bricks’n’mortar stores. I could sort you out a sample though. Email me on robert dot hinchliff at yahoo dot co dot uk if you’re interested :)

This morning after the shower I put on Rose Delight body oil and then I just sprayed Incense Rose both by Tauer. The ladder is a sample from a generous NST’er.

    Tea is Marrakech Mint

Robin..you could use some nap time today and some tea from that tea pot

Pretty sure you smell fantastic, but the “not enough sleep” part stinks!

So far, just mellowing out with my “accidental” Tauer Amber Flush body oil from last night. I will layer something delicious as soon as I finish my coffee and get moving. Someone mentioned PdE Tabac Aurea yesterday and it’s time I followed suit.

I finally heard from my relatives in NZ- turns out they were in Kaikoura when the earthquake struck and now can’t get home due road issues. Thankfully, everyone is fine! Thinking of all you peeps there and hoping life gets back to normal sooner rather than later.

Wearing the last of my Ormonde Woman sample. As soon as I put it on my eyes opened and I thought: I smell like Christmas.
That is not a bad way to smell. It made me instantly happy and is making this day infinitely better for me.
Now I am crossing fingers, toes, eyes, limbs that I get the travel set of this fragrance on my wishlist for Xmas. The hubby did pick up on the fact that Iris Nazarena was on there, so…..

I’m sampling Borghese di Borghese edp, from TPC’s recent sale on vintage samples. (PSA: sale there again today and tomorrow, 21% off, code “preholiday.”)

MAN, I love these 70s greenies. This is super-rich and reminiscent of several other complicated deep green florals – Safari, Inoui, and gah what was that other one… long gone, of course, and I have a sample nearly empty now…

        Inoui was Shiseido.

I don’t get on with Lauders, so I’ve never put Aliage on skin. (There’s something about them – they smell fine, but two hours in I’m nauseated and my stomach doesn’t calm down until I scrub. Happens every time, and it’s a shame because all three of my aunts wear EL and they smell great.)

I can’t wear any EL either. I like a lot of the scents on others, but not on my own skin. I know it seems strange, but I feel almost claustrophobic in them.

OOHHH! I loved that one…haven’t thought about it in ages! Speaking of greens have you ever tried Clinique Wrappings? Don’t know if that was a 70s or 80s fragrance but I liked it as well…

and your mention of Scoundrel yesterday….loved that one too :)

I wish I knew what Scoundrel smelled like! The mini I bought on ebay was really ruined.

Wrappings is a little dry for me. Lots of vetiver and musk in the bottom, and I just don’t love that. The top is sparkly and beautiful, though.

Scoundrel from what I remember was rich and sweet with oakmoss in it (probably the real deal :) !!!) and killer sillage…

I am surprised that I liked Wrappings so much given the vetiver…I am usually not a fan when vetiver is a prominent note….I doused myself in Angel Muse this weekend in Sephora and I found it to be a bit off putting, preferring the original Angel if I had to choose between the two….

I love Borghese Il Bacio, a very plummy oriental. It is kind of a no brainer, altogether pleasing perfume. I like Wrappings, too. I can wear most of the Lauders. I am especially fond of Azuree and Knowing but I have over applied and understand how one could feel consumed by their humongous scent profile and sillage.

Are they reformulated, though? I bought a bottle of Fendi Fendi on fragrancenet and it smells nothing like the original. And I don’t mean little tweaks here and there – there is no relationship to the original.

Bulgari Black with an added spritz of Huitieme Art Myrrhiad which seems more about vanilla than myrrh. They are working nicely together.

Hermes Galop. It’s a day to evening scent…

I need advice on a fragrance gift for my female doctor who has commented a few times that I always smell good. I’ve usually applied something quiet hours before the appointment, just because I can’t be completely commando. I have mentioned my fragrance “hobby” ( not orthopedically taxing). Yesterday it was the Tabac Aurea she smelled hours later, when I could barely detect it. Has any discovery collection been a successful gift for anyone?
Or, would soap or body wash/ gel be better? Last year I did food.
    Thanks!

Andy Tauer is selling his soaps this year, they are beautifully fragrant glycerin soaps. This year’s scents are tuberose and mandarine ambrée. I just received my tuberose soap and it’s heavenly. Cute retro style packaging too.

The other soaps I gift a lot are Fresh Index, they smell nice and the pretty paper wrapping is great too.

Another gift idea is the Jo Malone mini sets, they have several out now, along with mini candle sets.

It’s too warm here but I am also a member of the didn’t sleep soundly club.
Never got my comment posted yesterday but I wore Cuir de Russie and the Fresh Cream lotion. Hubby asked twice if I had lit a candle and kept sniffing at me suspiciously :) Whoever it is that has been urging me to try the lotion (there are several of you, I know) enabler pins of a special variety since I tend to dislike heavily scented body creams and find this to be non-irritating and pleasant.
Being a kind woman, I didn’t point out to my spouse this morning that he smells like a pineapple and nutmeg milkshake. This is NOT a bad thing. I don’t know how he takes the not-very-interesting-in-the-bottle HDP 1828 and makes it amazingly sexy. The eucalyptus disappears and there’s no pine, the citrus morphs into pineapple and the sweet notes are amped, sillage is soft but present. He’s helping out with some filing today in an office full of women and I expect he will be the subject of some discreet huffing.
I’m unscented so far and enjoying the peace and quiet. I’m also rambling because I’m procrastinating about calling our ISP over a billing problem that nobody seems able to understand or solve. The next person who tries to convince me to add a landline for only $20 a month is going to be very sorry. I think I’ll probably wear No. 5 into battle.

Success! Put on my polite but firm mask and waded in. Will be paying a better rate for the next year in spite of “no current discounts or promotions.” It was a worthwhile hour and I only had to be transferred once. Now I know to ask for the “loyalty department” instead of billing when I call. I can call back next week to get an additional discount because I will qualify for a promotion that hasn’t started. *insert happy dance here* Chanting “you catch more flies with honey…” to myself paid off in a big way. It probably helps that I’ve worked in CS and know how it feels to be yelled at by some stranger who wants a favor.

Yves Rocher’s Accord Chic. It is a no brainer incense – iris, really very good, especially considering the price, and in the Netherlands, available as a 10 ml purse spray for 10 euro’s. Koyel thinks otherwise, but think it is a better YSL Nu. I think someone on Fragrantica writes that it is exactly like vintage Nu for those of you who are missing that one.

Morning, all. I’m another member of the “didn’t sleep ” club. If ever there was a day for a no-brainer perfume, it’s today. And the trophy for “Best No Brainer” goes to Black Cashmere. It’s not yet five o’clock, but I’m up, dressed, and trailing clouds of glory in the form of sweet woods snd warm spices. BC is soooo beautiful to my nose. It smells great on everyone, even Dakkie-Dog-Hoople-the-Cat. He’s just had a huge cuddle and picked up my perfume. By way of thanking me, he’s covered me in white fur because he’s moulting for summer, and he’s dribbled–just a little — on my shirt. Sigh. I’ll change my clothes shortly.

Newburg is a wool-sucker. Ordinary cat drooling is nothing compared to the slobbery chewing that occurs if he’s feeling needy. My softer robes and sweaters are neglected for this reason and don’t even ask me about the soft fleece blanket that used to adorn our bed. Yick. Haineko does it too, but only if her brother starts first. They’re incredibly cute and creepy in the little soft cat bed as they nurse and knead in unison, with their little eyes following you around the room. Weirdos.

    1) Only a few hours of sleep- but woke myself up with some jumping jacks and stretching.
    2) In a few drops of Coromandel(from an adorably tiny Chanel bottle), which is a wonderful no brainer and perk me up.
    3) Homemade cafe au lait + toasted croissant with almond cream. MADE BY THE COMISSARY. We have a frustrated culinary grad who is killing it in the kitchen, so the quality of of the soups, baked goods, salads and entrees have soared. This particular treat was $1.

With thanks to Robin’s mention of National Cat Day a few weeks ago, I stuck my neck out and volunteered to find a home for a sweet kitty. Kitty’s person had passed away (at the age of 92), and the little kitty sat on the steps of the house waiting for him to come home for two months. It was tender and heartbreaking, but her extended family could not keep her. A few of us in the community were able to make her story known and find her a happy new home with people who will love her as much as her first person did.

So last night I didn’t sleep much because there were kitties looking for homes in my dreams.

I blame everyone’s lack of sleep on the full moon. Let’s use it as a motivation for lots of fragrant spritzing plus extra sleep tonight. (Beware of online shopping!) :)

May whatever friendly deity you believe in (or not) bless you for helping to find that kitty a home. I hate that pets who are already mourning a lost human are so often left homeless. My cousins and I all have agreements (and in some cases clauses in our wills) to care for each other’s pets in case of disaster.

That’s wonderful that you’ve worked things out ahead of time for your furry family members. I hadn’t before seen up close how pets can collateral casualties when someone passes away. Kitty’s extended family all have Big Dogs, and Kitty was used to life in a quiet home, so they knew she wouldn’t be happy with them.

Every night I only average about 5.5 hours of sleep. It’s not that I have a problem going to sleep–it getting into bed in the first place.
I am such a night owl, it’s pathetic. I get up at 6:30 a.m. each morning as I have to be at work by 8:30 a.m. and I work until 5:30-6:00 p.m. I rationalize that I stay up so late because I have such a short evening. However, I know that even if I got off work at 4:00, I would still be up late every night.

On another note, my SOTD is Tiziana Terenzi’s Lillipur.

If you can do your work and generally feel ok, perhaps you are someone who doesn’t require the usual amount of sleep. The evening time you stay up may be the way you wind down to sleep a restorative 5.5 hours. There is a lot of stress related to sleeping. I haven’t been staying asleep, and found I’m more productive and calm when I just decide to get up and get something done.

Good news is that I did manage to work something out with Amex yesterday. I said that the dental school had goofed something up with my bank account and I could pay Amex something last night and pay the rest on the 24th. I wasn’t exactly expecting them (dental school) to take out $500 instead of $200. I’m happy that something was worked out but still feel bad/guilty that I wasn’t able to pay the full amount since it is a charge card. Since it is my day off, I am wearing the dry down of vintage Bal. It’s past noon and I haven’t showered yet and after my shower, I shall keep wearing vintage Bal. It’s not a work safe perfume so I don’t wear it to work.

SOTD = Le Labo Iris 39

This was my first perfume purchase from Barneys and my first Le Labo ever. It is versatile, appropriate for all occasions and weather. It’s another two-fer day for me as I am continuing Iris Week AND wearing a no-brainer perfume.

In other news, I am the rollerball extraction whisperer. I bought a rollerball of Elizabeth & James Nirvana Bourbon with the intention of rehoming the contents into an atomizer. Since the rollerball is brand new and the ball is not slick, I was able to use the pad of my thumb to gently rock the rollerball contraption with an upward motion until it popped off. It is very similar to opening a vial except the top of a vial is ridged and has more friction.

I need to stop by Macys later today to use my $40 Macys money!

Each for my sisters and nieces.

I took the opportunity to smell Incense & Cedrat. Ut drags tbat I forgot to bring my own atomizer to procure a sample. The SA promised to make me a sample the next time I’m there.

I tried the new Chanel No 5 last week. When I first sprayed it, I couldn’t tell it apart from the original. Once the drydown process started I could vaguely smell a slight difference. Not enough to wow me. Like you, after a few minutes, I couldn’t smell it anymore.

Inspired by others’ posts, I am in Chanel No 22, not a no-brainer for me but something I enjoy tremendously when it’s what I want. Mine is the spray cologne from a bottle old enough to be powered by propellant (which is also nearly empty :( )

Had a really good perfume day yesterday – Habanita L’Esprit for a long day of appointments and running errands, and Mona di Orio Musc in the evening. I feel like I smell good every day but it’s rare that I pick exactly the right thing for my mood and whatever else is going on. Yesterday everything lined up perfectly.

SOTD: DS & Durga Spirit of the Glen from a sample. Sniffed up close on the skin, I didn’t love it, but every now and then during the day I’d catch something that smelled very nice –and I think it might have been me!

My week of losses (minor, I realize, compared to many of yours) was capped when I arrived home tonight to find that a beautiful old maple tree right behind my house had been cut down!!! It was on communal property in my townhouse development, and I suppose it was axed because of a (much needed) drainage project. But I didn’t know beforehand that it was to be cut and I feel so betrayed and bereft without it…
