Thursday scent of the day 11/10

Posted by Robin on 10 November 2016 187 Comments

under a tree

Hey, it's Almost-Friday! What fragrance are you wearing?

My choice: Serge Lutens Iris Silver Mist. Plus two cups (so far) of strong Irish Breakfast tea.

Reminder: 11/11 will be Iris Friday — wear an iris fragrance, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

SOTD is Nishane “Sultan Vetiver”. One for all the vetiver lovers out there – it lists 3 types of Vetiver among the notes. :^)

Here are the notes (now that I am on a laptop again):
        Top: java vetiver oil, anise, pepper and bergamot;
Mid: bourbon vetiver, haitian vetiver, neroli and tonka bean; Base: amber, leather and Brazil vetiver

Yup, it’s pretty vetiver-y (4 vetivers, not 3) and I also get the leather. Personally it’s a slightly headache-inducing mix (I blame the leather!), but real vetiver lovers won’t have that problem. :^)

In Philosophy Fresh Cream. Yummy, inviting, simple and very fleeting vanilla scent. I prefer the body lotion which is cozier and lasts longer.

I am testing Phlur Hanami, from a generous NSTer
It’s a subtle Sandalwood, could make it into my “Peaceful scents box”, wears close to the skin on me.

china 5 peaks green tea for me. Went to bed early last night and woke up refreshed, awake, and ready for a beautiful day with the little chubby Buddha and my crazy monkey

Le Labo Iris 39–a weirdly metallic and dry iris–patchouli fragrance. Another decant almost emptied.

I am drinking a cup of Upton Bohea Special which has a lovely toasty roundness.

Two thumbs up for the Irish breakfast tea! I chose my usual joe this morning, however, I mixed it up a bit by trying the “pour over” method. Probably the last person on earth to test this method, but it does make for a really outstanding cup of coffee.

My funk continues, so to bolster myself I’m wearing MFK Grand Soir. Thank You to everyone who offered kind comments and support yesterday. I’m in the process of making some changes hopefully for the better, but keep getting stonewalled by circumstances. Very frustrating, especially when one has reached the stage of complete acceptance and anticipation of change, but the rest of one’s reality is lagging behind.

My grandfather told me when I was about 10 that I must pay attention to the fact that I was born on March 4th, so my prioritiy in life should always be to look forward and continue marching “forth.” He was a wonderful man.

Happy Almost Friday Day to all, and no matter when you birthday is, continue to march forth bravely and boldly!

Sephora VIB 20% off starts today. What are you getting? I don’t know what I need yet :-). Also, if you have a favorite Nordstrom SA, you can ask if they will match the 20% off for merchandise both stores carry. You need to show the coupon.

I ended up getting a bunch of Drunk Elephant products – I am very impressed with this brand, plus a couple of products our own resident skin care expert kpaint recommended. Did not get any frags as I am saving for a bday gift (this plan is now in disarray with the announcement of Hiram Green’s new fragrance.)

Hana Labo is great. I highly recommend drunk elephant – their products are loaded with antioxidants and their eye serum is the only one that I do not break from. Their exfoliat combines both Aha and Bha making it a great choice – you do not have to apply two things. Cannot say enough good hugs about them

When I got home yesterday there were 3 perfume packages waiting for me, which also helped. In attempt to lighten my mood, I sprayed on MFK Aqua Vitae Forte from a sample before bed. It was still going strong this AM. I have found most MFK scents to have some serious lasting power. I reapplied this morning. This is one I had written off as pretty and clean but I am finding it to be much more complex and interesting.

Prada Infusion d’Iris absolue today. My weird relationship with iris continues. This seems great today, but yesterday’s Heeley Iris de Nuit I could not smell at all, and it was completely subsumed by Kilian Tales of Immortality which I applied to the other arm. Weird, because tales of Immortality does not even seem particularly strong.

Tales of Immortality is an oxymoron. I won a dab sample from Perfume Posse. A dab lasted less than 20 minutes.

Hey Solanace, your turn to look at my city and wring your hands… When you say Angela Davis, do you mean Angela Davis–political activist, feminist and race, class analyst? She is an alumna of my alma mater.

In solidarity, that Angela Davis or not.

Yes, that Angela Davis. It’s somehow comforting, in the sense of being unapocallyptic, to remember that it was never easy, it was never good, but people are resilient and pulled it off. And how cool she studied at your university.

    Thursday!

    1) Foggy day. Perfect day to empty the sample of Oud & Bergamont from Jo Malone.
    2) Protest march yesterday night (sorry commuters, so sorry) PLUS a special late night kickboxing class that so crowded actually had to held in three sessions in rooms at the facility.

I had to sleep in the guest room last night. The old paint on the walls is so porous it will take two coats to cover…but it looks so much better already. Plus, at dinner last night a corner cracked off one of my molars, so a dentist visit today. I think this means night #2 in the guest room. I’m wearing Rhubarb Eclararte today, bright, cheerful, and will be gone by the time I get in the dentist’s chair.

I tested No. 5 L’eau one last time today and I still. Just. Can’t. I’m sorry if I’m bashing something lovely to other people but it is just straight up horrible on me. My cousin took our laundry to town last week and someone had used the machine prior to her and left “traces” of detergent (there’s only one washer at the laundromat. Small town). I had to air my undies out for three days and flat-out wash my shirts and pants again twice to get the smell out. If I ever want to trigger the memory of that sharp, painfully strong odor, Chanel has provided something similar enough. I must be hypernosmic to something in the base because I can’t even see the relation to any of the other No. 5s if I squint my brain and concentrate. I’m very disappointed (but it smells perfectly lovely on my cousin, WTF?).
Have covered myself in an almost visible cloud of Salome in the hopes of killing the remaining traces. Very glad we were delayed and aren’t traveling until tomorrow because my husband would curl up like a salted slug if he had to ride in a car with me right now, and he likes Salome.

I got a LOT of very harsh laundry detergent out of No. 5 L’eau after the first 15-20 minutes, as well. Bleah (and I like No. 5 and Eau Premiere).

Yo! Hmmmph. Bother and harrumph! In fact, ninety degrees of beastly botheration! You know, I’m a contrary creature. I slept really well for once, but I want to go back to bed. I’ve worked out a smart little outfit, but I want to wear scruff. According to my diary. I have an easy day, but I feel apprehensive and reluctant. The dear man is being cheerful and considerate, but I feel irritated by his good humour. And so on. All up, I’m ridiculously out of joint, and recognising the fact hasn’t caused a temperament adjustment, which it normally would. I should have worn Apres L’Ondee or Fate-anything that soothes by being gentle or full of golden light that would be wise. Sensible. Helpful. But no, I chose Femme, and a lot of it. My perfume message appears to be, “Drop dead, world, I’m coming through!”

In Prada Les Infusions d’Iris which I find kind of boring and linear. Not sure if it’s the one that seems to get a lot of love – I’m wearing whichever version Nordstrom had on its shelves a few months ago, which I took a sample of.

About to get in the shower and will put another iris on afterward.
