Thursday scent of the day 11/3

Posted by Robin on 3 November 2016 190 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm relaxing with Comme des Garçons Kyoto.

Reminder: 11/4 will be Peace Out Friday — wear a fragrance that brings / gives peace. Suggested by Lovestosmellgood.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Premier Figuer Extreme. So while my brain is telling me I’m at work, manically trying to hit unattainable deadlines, my nose says I’m somewhere in the mediterrannean snoozing under a fig tree. If only.

You smell great. I haven’t smelled Extreme, but the original is the only fig perfume I can tolerate and it’s divine.

I have both, and although there’s not much in it, I think I prefer the Extreme because its a little bit greener.

Egoiste Chanel- the cologne concentree. This concentration has an intense musk ambrette base in addition to the sandalwood, rosewood and spice of the EDT.

If you are really thinking of succumbing, I wouldn’t delay too long. Many stores are out of the EDT, and only the EDP shows up on-line.

*Not enabling – honest (says the woman who sprung for a large bottle before it was sold out) * :)

Someone on basenotes did a comparison between EDP and EDT. Apparently no 22 is unrecognizable and Coromandel has lost some of the chocolate note in EDP formulation.

EdT is much sparklier and the citrus note was just gorgeous with the florals; EdP is substantially similar but reminds me just a bit of 31 RC with the base a little heavier and more prominent. I *loved* the top of the EdT, but it lasted like 30 minutes on me, so I’m pleased with the extended longevity.

Thanks for the comparison. I find some similarities between 1932 and 31 RC in the EDTs. I wouldn’t call 1932 31 RC Light ;) less I offend anyone but they are linked together in my mind’s eye.

Warmish today so trying out L’Instant de Guerlain pour homme EDT which my swapper gave me to compare to the EDP. Really juicy yellow citrus opening followed by the same ambery cacao base but it’s sheerer. I like both versions very much.

Saddened that my Indians lost the World Series this year. I’m hoping that they will win it next year. I am wearing the dry down of URV right now. That one has the life span of nuclear waste like most Tauers do on my skin. After my shower, I think I will switch over to Noontide Petals or Orange Star. I love Andy Tauer’s work even though some of his perfumes don’t work for me.

I’m wearing vintage AG Passion this morning, as I was thinking about perfumes that I wore at different times in my life. Looking up the original Lagerfeld Chloe, I got curious about its creator, Betty Bussé. Google found me this fascinating 1977 profile of Ms. Bussé in the archives of People magazine:

    http://people.com/archive/success-smells-sweet-to-betty-busse-the-woman-with-the-million-dollar-nose-vol-8-no-14/feed/

The article notes that she was the highest paid female nose at that time. Adjusted for inflation, her $100,000 salary would be worth $406,400 today.

It also credits her with several more perfumes than Fragrantica has, not only Chloe and Estee, but also Prince Matchabelli Aviance, Rudi Gernreich, and Marcella Borghese Fiamma.

Robin, I wonder if you’d consider adding Betty Bussé to the NST perfumers list? We can’t forget these pioneering women perfumers!

Opone today (can’t be bothered to spell it right at the moment). Dry roses, slightly scratchy woods – it feels rustly and crackly in a way that is just right for fall (although we had a lot of rain last night so things are tending toward squelching right now).

Narciso EdP for me. The creaminess is so comforting.

Feeling almost hungover from that baseball game. My husband’s Cubs roots kept building. Over the years I think he had basically steeled himself for “not in his lifetime.” Lots of channel changing, leaving the room, hope and grumbling pessimism, fearful optimism throughout the night. Made me wish for a bigger home. I’ve never seen a stadium so filled with people (on both sides) in such pain and on the verge of throwing up.

I lived in LA during the Lakers championship run in the early 00s and you didn’t even have to be watching to know what was going on. Everyone in my neighborhood had their windows open and the cheering and yelling coming from outside let you know when the score went up and down. Fun!

That’s such a great description of watching the game, at home and in the stadium! Seriously, if not for my experience using calming breathing, I would’ve been a mess trying to sit through it. I will admit, however, that there was an abundance of superstitious behavior in my household to help the Cubs! ????

Oh yeah… I took credit this morning based on the fact that I stopped using our Cubs pint glass. I used it at the beginning of the series but decided it had bad mojo. Soon as I stopped pulling it out of the cupboard they started winning.

I’m convinced the fact that I couldn’t find my lucky Giants scarf doomed us…but I’m okay with that.

I’m wearing Sarrasins this morning, just because. I watched all the game last night, rooting for the Cubs just because 108 years is long enough to be Series-Winless. At one point I yelled “Go, go, go!” at the TV and scared the heck out of the cat, who spent the remainder of the evening under my bed. I’ll make it up to her by serving roast chicken as her dinner.

In my house we refer to it as “cat skittering time”. My husband has a tendency to put the TV on mute, so it’s nice and quiet. Then BAM! He reacts and cats skitter away.

Poor cat! ???? I imagine that the element of the Cubs’ curse brought in a lot of viewers last night who might not have otherwise watched. I’d say it lived up to the kind of excitement you want from a Game 7, luckily.

I’m in Vero Profumo Onda extrait. I’ve been on a Vero kick recently; having rediscovered all my bottles in the dark corner of the cabinet. Onda is very much a perfume like walking in the park in autumn. Smells of wet leaves; earth; and cold and dark places. But not like a cave dark. Park after sunset dark. Love it.

Yes, the first time I went to Frédéric Malle in Paris I approached the testers and was sharply addressed by the SA not to touch them, she would assist me when she finished with her other client. Many shops don’t allow you to touch the merchandise but I thought the testers would be okay. Apparently not. And she wouldn’t let me smell more than 3 scents.

Usually I get my hands on the tester – don’t worry! But this time she sprayed a blotter and then when I asked for it on my skin she sprayed my wrist as she still had the bottle in her hand. My problem was with the amount she sprayed…

I’m no help on this front, I’m afraid. I haven’t worn the EDT of Bois des Iles enough to know off the top of my head if there are real differences. I haven’t done a side-by-side. I will say when I spritzed in from the bottle (from the new EDP) for the first time I was impressed. But if I do a comparison (which I’m sure I will at some point, I’ll keep you apprised!)

super relaxed SotD = Chanel Eau de Cologne. The Santa Ana winds are blowing. It will be hot hot hot today.

I’m curious about the incense and resinous fragrances that get lots of love for having a peaceful feeling. My nose might be overly sensitive to these notes.

Stash made me feel like I’d been dipped in smoke. Grand Amour, which I think has a reputation for gentle florals, smells like myrrh and little else to me. Like Dory just keeps swimming, I just keep sniffing.

Have you tried any sweeter incense scents or blends? Monyette Paris, Barbara Bui, Parfums de Nicolai Vanille Tonka all come to mind, they are very different but all are smooth and pretty. I love incense perfumes but when I finally smelled Stash the opening was very harsh to my nose. Always plenty to sniff!

Kyoto is one of my favorite incense perfumes, I need to break down and get a bottle one of these days.

Wearing Imaginary Authors Slow Explosions today, which I love, and which also smells like it has an incense note although there’s none listed. It reminds me of Wazamba so I compared the notes and they both have apple in common, I smell it more I’m Slow Explosions. I’m glad they smell similar to me now that Wazamba is only in a big bottle and more expensive. The World Series was so exciting! I’m in IN so I’d be happy with either win but we’ve always been Cubs fans and the series has been a welcome break.

4th ‘peaceful’ scent is Parfumerie Générale “Bouquet Massai”.

Notes are peony, magnolia, karo karounde, coffee, cashmeran, sandalwood, tolu balsam and fruity notes. It’s nice but doesn’t last (and is one I’ve tried before in warmer weather, with the same result).

All my peaceful perfumes have been from the Blooms “Aequeous Florals” sampler from early this year, and what I have learned is I like how they smell, I don’t think they are really me, and none of them has worthwhile longevity on my skin. :^)

Kyoto was my first thought for a peaceful fragrance, so I’ll probably wear it tomorrow. Incense is just so soothing and all. SOTD is Clair de Musc. This is one of the only lighter musk scents that I like – most are what I consider laundry musks and leave a funny taste in my mouth. Does anyone else experience that?? They are supposed to be easier and not as heavy but blech, most I hate.

Despite that I stayed up to watch the Cubs, the only baseball team I’ve ever rooted for from years spent in Chicago and my love of Shawn Dunston, who played for them in the 80s! Trying Sadanne at the moment, which really just smells like a put strawberry jam on my wrists. I love a lot of the Slumberhouse line, but this is too linear and too sweet for me. I get no roses at all. Then again, my nose isn’t in top form at the moment.

I got samples of PG Indochine and Cadjméré in the mail this week, and thought I had put Indochine on this morning until I looked at the Cadjméré decant and since it’s almost empty, that must be what I put on. I’ve been thinking the 2 smell really similar but now I’m wondering if I’ve only been testing Cadjméré and not Indochine, the decant of which is almost full. *Is confused.*

At any rate, neither name connotes peace in any way (to me) but scent-wise Cadjméré could fall into that category. It reminds me of ELdO Bijou Romantique which I’m going to buy a FB of from the Sephora sale tomorrow, so I’ll go ahead and finish off this decant today.

I bought 6 PG decants and one thing they seem to have in common is excellent sillage for the first hour or so, then a disappearing act morphing into skin scents thereafter. For that reason, I’d never buy one – money spent; money saved. ;)

I have tried 13 Parfumerie Générale samples so far this year, and only 2 have had acceptable lasting power for me. (Those were Hyperessence Matale and Musc Maori). I think its a Pierre Guillaume problem – his Collection Croisiere stuff has mostly had the same issues, as does his Huitième Art, as does his Phaedon. It’s a shame because some of his stuff is just beautiful, for 30 minutes or so. :^)

None of them last on me either, except Isparta, which doesn’t keep all its density but something nice remains for a while.

SOTD is Tauerville Rose Flash, which is still hanging on after a shower.

Oh, to be in Chicago today–well done, Cubs! What a good series and what a great game last night! Both the Curse of the Bambino and the Curse of the Billy Goat are broken now!

I wore Nasreen by Micallef today, it’s been a glorious sunny day in San Diego. Such a relief to be out of the cold gloom of Montreal for a while. Will be switching to Ambre Nuit tonight. Trying to finish up a bunch of decants as I’ve noticed several have evaporated.

Pulled the rest of my winter fragrances out today. It’s supposed to drop back to the 70s tomorrow. Wearing AG Nuits d’Hadrien, a sweet and spicy sort of peaceful.

Ha, I love “drop back to the seventies”! A coworker told me a cold front was due to arrive Saturday, and when I looked at the forecast, it looked mighty dubious to me- 80 degree F!! Are you kidding me? ????

Wore Queen today, still thinking about what to wear tomorrow. Will probably grab something quick for what will be a less than peaceful day, since today was a hot mess.
