Wednesday scent of the day 11/2

Posted by Robin on 2 November 2016 265 Comments

lotus

Happy Hump Day! Plus, happy birthday to Shah Rukh Khan. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm peace-d out on a budget with Pacifica Tibetan Mountain Temple.

Reminder: 11/4 will be Peace Out Friday — wear a fragrance that brings / gives peace. Suggested by Lovestosmellgood.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    Day # 3 of peace=essential oils theme-

SOTD- “Ian” – a fruity chypre essential oil blend of labdanum, frankincense, oakmoss (lots of it!!!), styrax, tobacco leaf, cedarwood, pine needle, jasmine, lavender, patchouli, vanilla, grapefruit, neroli, bergamot, tangerine and “pear” isolate

    Poor Man’s Tea- Lipton Chai

An idea for a future community project (stolen from Brie of APJ): pairing perfume with favorite teas…if we haven’t done it already :)

I tested my blend Signal Hill Walk last night. I created it 8 weeks ago…give or take…myrrh, kanuka, manuka, sandalwood, lemon, pine….and goodness me. It smells exactly like a paperbag of MUSHROOMS! Is that a good thing? I sprinkled it on my arm and it’s still going strong 9 hours later. So, long lasting mushrooms. I don’t want to smell like a mushroom, let alone a whole bag of mushrooms.

Now, I’m too scared to test my other blends :Everest Girl…for my mountain guide friend who loves Amarige ( i cheated on that one and added a bit of Dame New Musk oil to make it prettier…well, to make it something worth wearing) and my experiment with lavender, vanilla and lemon.

Mushroom!!!!!what???? Oh, yeah…peace, man! Dude, hit me with the ‘shroom oil.

LOL! hey that is right! peace man with your ‘shroom oil!

Honestly, it might change over time so be patient….I have let my oils marinate for up to 9 months…also, I am known to tweak if I don’t like it by adding something else…usually a top note (citrus of some sort) which always manages to make it smell better…

and yes, I have also added a drop or two of china musk or Egyptian musk to smooth it out…..I bet that New Musk is good in Everest Girl…what other e.os. did you add to that one? I bet your mountain guide friend loves it :)

I received this via the last swap and my first reaction was, huh? It’s very odd at first, a mix of chocolate (rich & dark) and pine and sap, but the two latter notes die down to a woody scent combined with the chocolate to make for a not half bad overall chocolate scent. It’s not sweet at all, and it’s definitely not one I’ve got in my collection. It lasts a good long time too, which is always a plus in my book.
It’s a funky take on chocolate, but it works some how.

    You smell lovely Robin!
I’m wearing vintage no 5 EdT over the new no 5 dry body oil, and I think I qualify for peaceful elegance.
I have a question: I bought vintage no 5 parfum extrait, dated to 1930, baudruche is still there, and the cord seal is intact. There has been some evaporation though, but the bottle smells incredibly beautiful. And, for a relative bargain! But…when shall I open it? When shall I wear it? Any suggestions as how to be a responsible perfumista entrusted with this much beauty?
There are no perfumista’s close-by to share this moment with regrettably.

Thwarted must be one of my favourite English words. And voracious. Another one is plucky. Which I need to be to open this bottle.
I think the Dutch are the most saving obsessed people on the planet, our collective saving account is 336,2 billion euro’s! So it is much more ‘natural’ for me to save this bottle than to open it. But I am going to be UnDutch about it and will tell you how wonderful it is!
        Thank you all!

How did you date your bottle? I have some extrait from the 70s that I was able to date by looking at old advertisements.

And I agree – open and enjoy it! It’s not going to improve sitting in the bottle, after all :)

There is a website chanelperfumebottles where the bottles are described and dated very clearly. It is a real crystal bottle, and the juice has darkened and seems sirupy. The seller is a very trustworthy one. I making perhaps too much of a fuss, it is just awe inspiring to have this living art that survived so much!

Not too much fuss at all! It’s an amazing find. One thing I love about buying vintage perfume is thinking about all of the hands it’s passed through in its lifetime. Your bottle has seen a lot come and go.

Feeling all out of sorts as I try to get settled in a new country. I relocated here to Paris (weekends in the south – it’s not quite as glamorous as it appears, believe me!) from the US east coast (just outside of NYC but on the Jersey side of the Hudson). Ugh. Most of my toiletries are on some (fully insured!) cargo ship, so I have to settle for scented bath products until sometime in late December. What on Earth was I thinking? Refusing to spend unnecessarily on scents, I’ve kept my purchases limited to shower gels….from a supermarket brand. Talk about a humbling experience! Really enjoying shower gels from Casino – for about a $1.5 each for 8 ounces, you’d be hard pressed for a better bargain. Enjoying one scented with Tahitian Monoi and happy to discover the scent lingers throughout the day. I may wander in the Yves Rocher at the local mall. Can’t get into too much trouble at those prices!

OMG! Casino is the best supermarket chain in Paris, I think! You will find really useful and wallet friendly items there.

Also, try to find an Aldi’s and don’t be afraid to check out any outdoor stalls in mixed ethnic neighborhoods- you can often good quality essential oils and perfumes from the Middle East!

SOTD Suleko Perfumes Djelem for that peaceful, easy feelin’. I’m smitten by the opening which is herbal and a little green from freshly mown hay. There’s a hint of lavender in there that I smell. It’s like being in a warm meadow. It dries down to a powdery vanilla and I swear I smell iris though none listed. I’m finding it calming and just really inviting.

The one annoyance is that she was going to charge me for the sample set which I really thought she should tack on with a purchase of a not-so-cheap item. I didn’t buy it.

Eric’s Parfums Night Flower. Wow! I bought this months ago at an event that Barbara Herman attended and had tucked it away. There’s a hint of floral leather after opening spices with one spray.
Angela said it does have some Cuir de Lancome character with a strip of Knize Ten ( haven’t smelled). This winter, I’m not leaving the house without a decant of this is my bag.

I am out of touch with the week’s theme but wearing one of my favorites, Satellite Padparadscha. Nothing else smells quite like it and it’s perfect for fall. I thought my last decant was gone and it’s long discontinued but digging around last week I found a nice big sealed decant, yay for being disorganized or I wouldn’t get little surprises like this, right? :)

Someone here reminded me of Dzonghka recently, and after wearing it to bed last night and falling in love with it all over again, I’m keeping it going today. Somehow in my memory I’d simplified this one into a more linear incense, but it’s so much more than that, and so beautiful.

ALso, Kusmi violet because we need caffeine as well as peace. :)

I think I’d better leave it to the creator of this natural cologne to elaborate if she wants to, but I’ll say that I have a lot of vetivers (if I include samples), and this is the most peaceful and contemplative.

lol! I just happened to be reading today and saw this (procrastinating doing some work).

Chocolatemarzipan, she’s referring to me. I’m a therapeutic aromatherapist but dabble once in a while with perfume blends. L. asked me make a vetiver one for her.

Notes are: bay, rose, Egyptian lotus, Atlas cedar, vanilla and vetiver (lots!) We haven’t named it yet.

I’ve been intrigued with you blends!

Happy birthday to SRK! He always looks so sad in every movie he’s ever been in. I hope his birthday brings him more cheer than his Bollywood romcoms/romtrages.

I am extremely excited today because I got my Tauer package!!!! Two gorgeous bottles of Rose Delight Oil (I was a hair too late to get the amber oil) and a sample of Au Coeur du Désert. The Rose Oil reminds me powerfully of Rose Flash, which is probably the perfume I’ve used the most since falling down the rabbit hole almost a year ago. ACDD is gorgeous, but I suspect I love LADDM more. I will have to conduct a side-by-side comparison. Also, Andy Tauer is awesome.

I’m too excited for peaceful scents. One wrist has Noontide Petals on it (from before I got my package; all that aldehydic sparkle!), the back of my hand has Rose Delight, and my other wrist has ACDD simmering sultrily away.

I need an intervention! I have been on a caramel apple kick for over two weeks and I just can’t stop! And a big BOOOO! to Kraft because they stopped putting popsicle sticks in the bag of caramels. Now have to go to Micheals and buy craft sticks…

On the perfume front, I’m wearing FM Musc Ravageur. Spicy good peacefulness! For auditory peace, I love this song by my all time favorite singer/songwriter, Mark Lanegan. Although this is a cover of a Chelsea Wolfe song, I love it better than the original.

Going all out Guerlain with Apres l’Ondee this morning, Mon Precieux Nectar for late in the day, and Cologne du 68 for intermittent spritzing. I find all of these scents peaceful and relaxing. It will be fun to see if they scents get along or clash. And they are decants so I’m in a race against evaporation to use ’em or lose ’em. I vote for use generously.

It is really super lovely. Perfect over Rose Jam shower gel. A spicy rose I believe targeted to the Middle East market. It is from Aramis which I know is an offshoot of Lauder but I didn’t know they were still churning stuff out…and very good stuff at that.

    Wow, Wednesday already.

3rd peaceful perfume of the week and SOTD is Baruti “Melkmeisje”. Notes are: Pear, Lilac, Linden blossom, Honey, Orris root, Vanilla, Vetiver, Sandalwood, Musk.

I didn’t like how this went on (something smelled ‘dirty’ and I wondered was it Costus, although it’s not a listed note). Very quickly that went away and I enjoyed a scent that now seemed to me to be iris-centered (again, most reviewers pick out other notes). And two hours later it was a skin scent only, albeit a very pleasant one, which I personally have no use for.

So, for me it’s no match for Indigo (which I got a FB of after testing earlier in the year), but I could easily imagine other NST folk loving this one. :^)

That is probably my most favorite lily if not floral fragrance. Spicy and deep, really beautiful. My only hesitation in buying a full bottle (for me, personally) is that I find it fairly strong – I don’t think I’d ever get through a full bottle. Especially as I have (ahem) “a few” other bottles as well.

Chanel 31 Rue Cambon today thanks to a swapmeet partner. When I first tried it several years ago, I found the patchouli too strong on me. People here have shown it so much love, that I just had to retry. Today it’s soft, inviting and complex. Really liking it.

Jasmin et Cigarette today, because I need to feel/smell poised – I’m leading a seminar discussion section today. The students are a good bunch, but I’ve never been responsible for such a lengthy, free-wheeling class meeting and I’m a little nervous.

Artemisia by Penhaligon for my day two of peaceful scents. This one is a powder puff of violet, vanilla and musk. Quite nice, and quite peaceful.

Could not have picked a better week to focus on peaceful types of scents with folks hitting the polls now and into next week.

Finally using Tea for Two. Tested it a bunch of times before and it was just all smoke. The smokiest lapsang souchong, and while some might love that, it was just too much for me. Found a 50ml bottle at a great discount online and thought why not. I don’t know what it is, change in my chemistry or something rather but now it smells like the most delicious and comforting chai but surprisingly and beautifully ethereal. Love.

I had the same experience with Tea for Two, pretty much exactly. I remember smelling it in a shop and thinking it smelled like barbecue smoke. Then some L’Artisans came up for sale on Haute Look and I got that and Timbuktu. And the bottle of Tea for Two I got smells like chai and not particularly smoky at all. I suspect it was reformulated at some point.

Continuing with sample testing, which is not playing into the ‘peaceful’ theme. Today’s theme is more along the lines of ‘epic fail’ aka ‘get it off me now now now!’ Apologies to fans of Heeley Bubblegum Chic, Art de Parfum Sea Foam, and Jul et Mad Secrets du Paradis Rouge. But my sample choices seem to be going from bad to worse today. Dare I persevere? DS & Durga White Peacock Lily is up next, and I have to say my history with that line does not supply me with optimism for this sample.

OTOH, TOTD is Taylor’s Afternoon Darjeeling, which is always good.

Morning all. Last day in Tasmania-that’s bad and good. Please may I encourage anyone who wants to see a clean (very, very clean!), green, beautiful part of the planet to come to Tasmania! I’ve never been anywhere so unlittered, Come in summer, though– it’s as cold here as it is lovely and friendly.

I’m wearing Boy today. I really like it, and it seems to hit the right for our last hike. I’m not sure what I’ll wear for peaceout Friday– maybe I could go to Chanel and see if they would give me a spray of Bois des Iles. Anything with sandalwood seems peaceful to me. Be well, all.
