Tuesday scent of the day 10/25

Posted by Robin on 25 October 2016 240 Comments

Churchill Stonecast Spiced Orange Tea Pot

Happy Tuesday, all! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm on day two of Halloween treats, with Kerosene Black Vines.

Reminder: 10/28 will be Treat Friday — wear a fragrance that reminds you of candy. Suggested by Happy888cat.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Churchill Stonecast Spiced Orange Tea Pot is £61.99 at DrinkStuff.

      Enjoy!
I would probably need one empty suitcase for beauty products and a large empty case for skin care…then room for incense, tea and I would say clothing but my bust is way to big for their sizing.

I’m trying to pack very light, to have room for exactly those things. Food items and paper/stationery are also on the list. And a knife!

I still have paper/stationery from my time in Tokyo back in 2008! Lots of beautiful things to enjoy over there.

          Hope it’s a great trip!

Enjoy! You may want to mail back the knife. Also, as you probably know, any food item declared means you’re likely to be screened more stringently by customs.

Oh, this is a good point, thanks. Is the knife a problem even if I drop off the luggage and it’s in the original packaging?

Annikky, If I were you, I wouldn’t run the risk of having your entire luggage pawed through by strangers because they picked up a sharp metal object even in checked luggage. My nephew almost caused an international incident when he had a toy scale model of a canon…even the pilot who happened to be at Security weighed in on it. It ended up being held by the flight attendant until the plane landed in Newark.

Some people are put off by Kerr’s elitism and nostalgia for the olden days, but I enjoyed the book very much. And I believe his writing is much more nuanced than just ‘the grass used to be greener’.

love the tea pot and the burnt orange color
This morning out of the shower I put on some Rose Delight body oil-I got it just yesterday in the mail after sampling it I couldn’t live without it. Donatella will forgive me. Or does oil not count as perfume? :)

Later on this morning ( I am up at the crack of dawn with the chubby Buddha) I put on Gourmand Coquin and I smell like a real treat!!! Love this one..

            it is addicting

          • hannahmom says:

I bought the Carnal Flower and was gifted with the Lipstick Rose. They both smell amazing, and they are super moisturizing as well. The LR is better in Body Butter than EDP perfume ( IMHO)
The Vetiver shower gel and the l’Eau d’Hiver body milk are also outstanding.

I received crappy service from the Malle international boutique itself, and will personally go though a distributer ( Saks etc) next time, even if there is a price diff as returns for damaged product and overall service levels would be better.

I love Demeter, because the commitment is so small. I can buy a .5 oz. splash bottle for $6.00 (or less if they are having a sale) and have a chance to really try a fragrance out. I have been wanting to buy Honey. I am on a buying moratorium until January, but I plan to definitely buy a few things from Demeter that I’ve been putting off as soon as the New Year rolls around.

I love mornings when I put on a scent and it’s just perfect – today that scent is Azureé.
And ever since this cold started all I want to drink is earl grey tea.
Maybe tonight I’ll dig out my bergamot essential oil and add it to some lotion.
    mmmm, bergamot.
I hope everyone has a lovely Tuesday!

Black Vines is a fun one!
It’s like Christmas as my swaps trickle in. I took a recommendation from a swapper based on my preferences and am wearing L’Instant de Guerlain pour Homme and am really liking it!
It’s sparkling up top with citrus, lavender and a hint of anise, then warms up with creamy cocao and patchouli. It’s all light and subtle. Great work scent.
Thanks to all my swappers-so fun to try new things and am liking everything so far????

Ha! We have a “don’t ask, don’t tell” arrangement around my house. The Guerlain, I was just informed by my swapper, is the Extreme version, in case you find yourself near a Guerlain counter. I’d say it shares some similarities with the TF Noirs- both men’s and women’s but more understated which is a plus for me.

I like don’t ask don’t tell..if my husband brings in a distinctive package he will cheerily chime out ” you got perfume(s).” As long as I am creative at keeping it all in a limited space, he’s nonjudgmental. After all, the bikes and aquariums take up a lot of space!

Hello everyone. Enjoy reading everyone’s scents of the day. It is very cold in my city this a.m. and I always reach for something warming on days like this. I am wearing Chanel Les Exclusif’s Coromondel. I have not worn it for a long time and I feel like I am wrapped in a warm blanket. Gentle patchouli (if patchouli can ever be gentle!). I sprayed it very liberally! Unfortunately I don’t find it lasts longer than 3 hours. Love Frederic Malle scents. Want to splurge – don’t know which one to choose. They are all gorgeous. I am going to have a hot cup of coffee and start the day.

You smell great. I have been applying Coromadel at night. If I put on a wrap before bedtime, it’s still on my sleeve the next day.

The FM choices are so personal depending on how you wish to wear them. It’s so hard to decide- like choosing one chocolate out of a 2 pound box. Iris Poudre is lovely. En Passant is as well. Portrait of a Lady is powerful but can’t be used with abandon. Carnal Flower is a good choice if you really big love florals.

I wanted to like Coromandel, but it just seemed a little light to me, and I couldn’t forgive the longevity given the price and 100ml-only bottles.

BTW, maybe I am just inattentive, but are you new to posting here? We are ‘mostly harmless’ and seldom bite. Well, I am anyway, I can’t speak for the others. :^)

It’s funny to hear that Coromandel is light on some folks! I tried one swipe from a sample vial and it just got bigger and bigger and bigger until I freaked out at five hours and tried (unsucessfully) to scrub it off. It was like wearing the perfume version of the out-of-control instant pudding in “Sleeper”!

Haha! It actually lasts all day on me, and I usually unscrew the atomizer and dab it at that. I love that movie and that scene is such a great physical comedy scene. It reminds me of Harpo Marx.

I dab it, too, and even on my scent-eating/low-projection skin it lasts all day and has enough sillage that I’ve even gotten compliments on it.

Speaking of Harpo Marx, have you ever read his autobiography? I think it’s long out-of-print but it’s a great read and he seemed like a very sweet man.

All this week I am trying samples that *based on their descriptions* ought to be ‘sweet treats’ – but are they? Armed only with my scent-eating skin, I am bravely putting them to the test. If I live to tell the tale, I’ll tell it here.

SOTD is Parfumerie Generale “Musc Maori”.
Notes are: cacao pod, tonka bean, amber, vanilla, white musk, woody notes, coffee, floral notes and green notes.

This starts on me as chocolate with a faint hint of orange, more ‘orange flavouring’ than fresh fruit. As time goes by, vanilla/ tonka notes get stronger and there’s a floral tinge in the background.

Treat rating: 4/5. I am pleasantly surprised, as so much PG stuff disappears from my skin quickly, whereas this one lasts 4-6 hours easily. There is more development than I expected, and I smell comfortable wafts every now and again.

If this were a sweet it would be: a Jaffa Cake at the start of the day, and steamed chocolate pudding with vanilla custard by the end.

    Happy Tuesday!

End of month, so reports and accounting time.

SOTD: Chanel’s L’Eau (from a sample). This is the very definition of a work safe scent- very pretty, very subtle, very light and fresh, safe to reapply for cocktails after work. a clean watery rose heart is here, and lifts the fragrance up. AT THE SAME TIME THO, Eau Premiere costs the same, will last longer, and can be sheered out by spraying into a bit of unscented lotion or oil. You will still get that modern interpretation of #5, but with better lasting power.

It has been 2-3 hours since I applied (just before starting work at 645 am PST) and all that is left is a rose-powder whisper. This would be great in summer I think and perfect for a woman in her 20s who wants something very light and very elegant with the ‘Chanel’ name, but I think the cream or upcoming dry body oil would be a better bet for those who want a light #5 experience?

Oh? Few perfumes have any kind of lasting power on my skin, but I wore this a couple of weeks ago and 8 or so hours later it was still there – at which point it smelled like the original N° 5, I might add. (Which is not to say it’s particularly long-lasting, but that I’ve not found it to be short-lived.)

For myself, I’d rather wear one of the original concentrations but the opening of L’eau really is a stunner.

My Christmas shopping was done before summer was over….I had started to make purchases and then decided that my finances needed to get in order so I self imposed a no buy …and that included any more Christmas stuff….I am going to make some perfume decants with very pretty metal decant sprayers as well as use up all of the yarn I bought to knit hats and scarves as gifts……

You know, I wish I could do that. I see stuff and think, “great Christmas gift!”, but then don’t buy it. I kind of like the shopping frenzy during the season, with all the excitement and good deals. I’ve even been known to shop 1-2 days before Christmas for everyone! I think having the pressure helps me make decisions too.

Perfume decants is a lovely idea! I may try this as well.

I bought these in the summer (along with plain colored ones which were even cheaper)….I have already decanted some of my full bottles and have given these as birthday presents…most of my family and friends are not fussy so they like this idea of a very large sample and having several at once…and the bottles really are so pretty……it is also a great way to drain full bottles!!!

Love the name of this Prada. Prince was my favourite musician and I wish he had released a fragrance with this name.
What does this smell like? I’m imagining incense and patchouli and some big white florals?

Spent the morning wearing Box of Eels to review it. Even though tuberose isn’t listed in the notes, I get a whopping dose of tuberose. Tuberose is my nemesis and needless to say, I don’t like Box of Eels. After my shower, I am either going to pull out another decant for review or I am going to wear Epic.

Our individual tastes are so fascinating. I’m going to try it later and try to detect tuberose in Box of Eels which I haven’t tested for a long time. I’ve been on a Tuberose binge, but I used to dislike it.

I don’t know that I get tuberose but I do find BdI unrelentingly sweet. I’ve assumed it’s the sandalwood I object to. Am I alone in this? It seems to be universally loved – I rarely see any detractors.

I don’t smell tuberose and don’t find it too sweet and generally I like it, but I think it’s the aldehydes+woods that can feel harsh to me and sometimes grating. I have to be in the mood for it. I like sandalwood and am hoping my decant of Chanel Egoiste (on its way to me) fulfills all of my hopes and dreams for a dreamy sandalwood.

It seems crazy that it would be the sandalwood that I don’t like (I’m pretty sure that would make me a party of one) but it’s also a note I’ve not had that much exposure to. I’m not mad for 10 Corso Como, Samsara, or Cocoa Sandalwood for the same reason (too sweet) but am okay with Tam Dao and Nirvana Black (iirc?) I’ve been wanting to try more sandalwood-forward scents to get it figured out. Maybe I should put Egoiste on that list.

Egoiste will probably be too sweet since I find it sweeter than BdI. Tam Dao is pretty dry, and doesn’t actually smell like sandalwood to me. More like cedar or other dry woods with a hint of coconut. I actually find Nirvana Black to be on the sweet side. Have you ever smelled straight up sandalwood EO? That might clarify your feelings about sandalwood. It helped me also figure what it actually smells like. The synthetics in the Chanels and in Samsara come close to that smell IMO.

Although the EDT of BdI and Samsara both have some sweetness, It’s more of a rose/jasmine floral sweetness. They are not modern but perfumey-perfumes and I have never detected tuberose in either. I really love them both but do prefer BdI in extrait.

This morning I pried the crimped top off a bottle of vintage Bellodgia I got for cheap on ebay (because it didn’t have a sprayer) and poured it into an empty atomizer bottle. I’m not wearing it, though, because I’d already put on Promesse de l’Aube earlier.

How did you pry the top off? I’ve got a massive bottle of vintage Le Dix with a broken sprayer. I haven’t tried cleaning it out yet (lazy) which might fix the problem. I’m also tempted to pry the top off a vintage bottle of No 22 so I can decant a splash bottle into it, but I’d want to seal it back up and I’m sure the whole process would be a disaster ;(

I took a tiny flathead screwdriver and, holding the top with pliers wrapped in a washcloth, stuck the screwdriver under the bottom crimping. I could pry up little tines of the metal, and once I got about half of it pried up, I used the pliers to ease the whole cap/atomizer tube off. I didn’t even chip the glass.

SOTD = Dark Passage Tabkeau de Parfums by Andy Tauer

It’s a treat because it is so good but sadly discontinued. Every spritz brings it closer to extinction unleas it is revived by Andy. I feel lucky to have a 2nd travel spray which I got from the reverse swapmeet. I know I shouldn’t hoard but I know I’ll be sad when I run out.

This a.m. I tested PG Aomassaï, which I admit I was slightly scared of. Nothing to fear! After the initial coffee-caramel-hazelnut opening I got some whiffs of vetiver before it quickly ratcheted way down to a barely-perceptible skin scent. Could be my nose, though, as I’m still congested and nursing a cold.

Am now in the last of a years-old sample of L’Artisan Amour Nocturne, which seems to have more detractors than fans, though I’ve always enjoyed its milky-caramel-gunpowder-orchid (it could fit in both the Treat and Fun categories.) It does smell quite tamped down, though, so it would seem I’m still olfactorily compromised.

Mmmm, I forgot how much I love Amour Nocturne. It’s even better than I remembered (how often does that happen?) Took a quick U-turn from my no buy to pick up a bottle for not much more $ than a large decant. Oops. Plus a bottle of LL L’eau en Blanc. Double oops. (Treat week seems to be triggering a ravenous craving for sweets!)

SOTD is Iris Silver Mist. Crazy sticking power: I put it on about 16 hours ago, and I can still smell it in occasional puffs.

Hopefully, very few of you will see this embarrassing post. In order to stick to the “treat” theme of the week, I went with…food. You see, my thesis writing has not been going so well, so I left lab early to work on it from home. It hasn’t been going so well at home either, so I thought I’d stay up late to work on it. But before working on it, I thought I would eat a little…treat.

So here we are, three tendresses later (these absolutely amazing almond flour-chocolate cakes with ganache hearts). I looked it up and they’re almost 500 Cal each. I’ve eaten so much chocolate that I feel ill. How’s THAT for a treat?

My thesis is looking hardly any better at all. I did 1.5 space it, which 1.5x’d its length. That’s a start?

:) I eat dessert every day, sometimes twice. I have certainly been known to eat 3+ 500-calorie treats in one sitting (who eats just one donut?) so that doesn’t sound outlandish to me! And we all know nothing sparks the cerebral synapses like chocolate.

Good luck with your thesis. You’re working on a science PhD?

There is some fig in it. I am generally anti-fig. Not a whole lot of fig though. I just didn’t find it terribly interesting.

I can give you a bit of Dark Passage. If I remember correctly you could only get it via Kickstarter campaign.

I owe you Sweet Morphine too. And I think you posted somewhere you want some Petite a Robe Noire. I have the original 2009 version when it was a boutique exclusive before they redid in 2012. It has some oomph. ???? Will add that to the list too. Hopefully we can do a SoCal meetup before the year’s end.

Started with just Rose Jam shower gel today, in prep for hunting down a full-sized Sephora near me. Tried the two new Nirvanas (too sweet for me) and an Atelier Cedar, can’t recall the full name. That was a bit too sharp, seemed cinnamon-y. Did come home with two pair of badly needed fall shoes though. Pleasant night, all.
