Happy Almost Friday! What fragrance are you wearing?
I'm wearing Lorenzo Villoresi Dilmun (from a rather old, not quite perfect decant) for Carole Lombard in My Man Godfrey (1936). (Update: plus, it's Carole Lombard's birthday.)
Reminder: on 10/7 we're doing "At the movies" — name a favorite movie, and wear a perfume that fits the movie or a character in the movie.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
Deliria, L’Artisan Parfumeur. Cold, hard, steel, softened by a dessert like, sweetness of character, all with the texture of supple leather. Hmmm, who could this possibly be? Of course – its Edward Scissorhands!
Perfect!
BobH always smells soooooo good!! 🙂
Thanks!
I decided to indulge in Nasomatto’s China White. There’s definitely something very retro about this smell, and I love it.
I admit I have a bit of trouble with perfume for tomorrow — my favorite movie is 1984 Ghostbusters, and I can’t really imagine most of the characters wearing perfume. I guess Egon would probably wear some, but I don’t what would make a perfect Eau de Egon. I guess Jeanine wears perfume, and Dana as well, but what kind of perfume? If anyone has any ideas, let me know!
Nasomatto! Haven’t smelled China White, but I totally loved their bottles and both of their scents that I tried. Mmmm, what a fabulous (and luxurious!) line.
maybe something smokey?
or do you have something with a Marshmallow note? For the big man!
That’s perfect! Demeter has а scent called Marshmallow, and while I don’t have it, I know a friend who does. Hope she’ll be willing to share some of it with me.
Great!
OMG Original Ghostbusters was one of my obsessions as a kid (the movies AND the cartoon series because yeah.)
Dana: Would be in Chanel 19- it’s fresh, composed and classy. Very Upper East Side of Manhattan.
Janine: With her first paycheck she would have blown it at Macy’s to get a bottle of the hottest, Fendi, and very, oh so carefully sprayed on pulse points, because girl should not be so obvious.
Egon: He is always being summoned at a moment’s notice, chasing down spirits and getting slimed! He would love to wear perfume, but he is in the paranormal business, and spirits are sometimes attracted to per-fume (through the smoke- one of the original ways to summon the spirit world). So Egon would wear something very fresh and easy to splash- and is used in rituals to repel spirits! So I think someting like Florida Water, Kanaga Water or Eau de Hungary (all available in NYC circa 1984) .
Fantastic!
Wow you have really thought this one through! That’s awesome.
I’m wearing Voyage d’Hermes. I needed something a little different after three days of amber. It has amber at the base but the top notes are refreshing.
you smell lovely.
I’ve got to pull my small decant of this out . . .
Lieu de Reves (sent to me by a fragrant fairy)
Can’t think of anything for tomorrow so I may be bowing out of the challenge.
Which is allowed 🙂
If you did feel like trying – and I certainly don’t always – the trick to this one I think is to find the perfume first and attribute the story afterwards. If you wore Lieu de Reves tomorrow, you could pair it with “Field of Dreams” or “What Dreams May Come” based on the name, or link it to a star the soft powdery notes make you think of. Or wear something you detest and claim it makes you think of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. ;^)
thank you! I may very well do that!
using another plastic sample here. today is Ramon Monegal Mon Bloom.
How is it?
The scene where Robert Redford washes her hair, A stranger in a Cherry Grove..leather, cherry wood smoke & almond. Movie: Out of Africa (a great soundtrack)
Tea is a Cafe with almond milk..
Love that movie!
That’s my favorite movie and my theme for tomorrow!
The music is phenomenal as well..
Yes! I love the music. “Music of Goodbye” is one of my favorite songs.
Adding it to my watchlist. Loved it the first time around.
Great perfume choice!
favorite movie of all time. Can recite every line. visited Karen’s house. I can smell red dust and campfire smoke and elephant dung from The Sheldrake ellies.
Sounds horrid, is wonderful. My movie for tomorrow, too.
This is the first week it’s seemed like fall so I’ve completely switched gears and today am wearing Serge Lutens Fourreau Noir, which isn’t specifically autumnal but fits right in, with its smoke-dark licorice-y lavender.
I pretty much had to toss a coin between Fourreau Noir and Santal de Mysore when I visited the SL shop – couldn’t afford both, and would have been happy with either. My partner’s love of sandalwood swung it for SdM. :^)
You chose well. SdM is glorious.
Being in the Lutens boutique and having to choose is just torture, isn’t it? I’m still kicking myself for not buying La Myrrhe when I was in the shop four or five years ago. I don’t regret my actual purchases (Fourreau Noir and Fumerie Turque) but I understand LM has been reformulated quite a bit and I want it the way it was. At least I went through a biggish decant so I have the memory of it.
Can’t do the movie thing today…. Celebrating my Giants win with oranges… Seville a L’Aube.
Apologies to my Mets fan friends. Any other team playing them, I’d be right there saying Let’s Go Mets. I love Citifield. But my heart goes back to freezing at Candlestick.
Looking forward to getting my hair cut. Why does that improve one’s mood so much and feel so good?
When I lived in SF I went to some Giants games..love the stadium. I really loved when they would do opera in that park as well..not sure if they still do that. SO much fun
Apology accepted???? I have a husband in mourning right now. That was a crazy, nerve wracking game, though.
Been there…. I’ve especially had to deal with a husband in mourning….
I kept switching channels. Could only watch when Giants were at bat.
Congratulations! On the Giants and the haircut. I am not a big baseball fan, but my person is and he was very sad that the Mets and the Giants were facing off, and now the Giants vs the Snubbies. I do like the Giants, though, because they have the most awesome names in baseball at the moment: Buster Posey, Angel Pagan, Madison Bumgarden . . . and a guy named Belt! I mean, who can root against that?
Yes, I know, Mets and Cubs fans!
Yeah, and we do love our nicknames. Belt’s nickname is “the baby giraffe”…
My sisters and some of my girlfriends refer to Pagan simply as “Smokin’ Hot” or “Smokin'” for short….
That game was awesome!!! MadBum is a stud! I hate that the next series is Cubs-Giants; I love ’em both. I really wish the effin’ Dodgers and Nats could just both lose right now. Blech.
In my world it is Stinkin’ Dodgers….
I got my split of HG Dilettante last night, so I sprayed it first thing today! It’s a gorgeous orange blossom, but it’s so monolithic that I’m afraid I don’t get the hype around it. I’ll enjoy my decant, but I don’t think I’ll ever be interested in a FB (though those are the cutest bottles!).
Mon chéri is visiting me from the US right now, so I showed him the damage polls! His jaw fell open in shock and horror. “But they can’t ever finish all that perfume!” he said. Silly boy. He doesn’t get us.
Oh Koyel, that is hysterical!!!
you are so brave..
If I had to write to Donatella most of my damages were in lipstick..I feel in love with the Rouge Rouge by Shiseido, and mascara..actually all make up in general. This happens to me when the season changes to fall..I feel that all my makeup and skin care must change! LOL
Maybe you can “rotate” your make-up the way you do your perfumes? I think lipstick has a five year shelf life if I am not mistaken….
That is a good plan chocolatemarzipan!
hey I am getting really creative whilst trying to save money 🙂
I fell for Shiseido Rouge Rouge Rum Punch last week, Lovetosmellgood! Which colors do you like?
Oh boy..well..(guess I will just confess) I own Murrey, Toffee Apple, Ruby Copper & Red Queen.
Rum Punch looks very plumy and sexy..now I must try.
Good Grief.
Well that felt good to ‘fess up!
🙂 Thanks, will try these others, too, now.
I have minimal interest in beauty products! This is best, because my bank account is weak enough without that added temptation. Lipsticks are all just…lipsticks to me! My mother gave me a great Dior lipstick that I used down to the nub, but when I went to replace it, I went with a 10€ Kiko lipstick, just because the color was fine and I liked the packaging >.<
I know I’ve purchased more lipstick than I need lately.
Diving in here with the burning question of my adult life: What should I do about my drawer full of make-up that I am not in love with, but am sort of okay with? Because so many times I have bought proper expensive, department store make-up and then fallen out of love with it once I got home–I now mostly buy on sale, Kiko, or drugstore store products–most of which I am equally meh about. So I have a drawer filled with hundreds of dollars worth of cheap and expensive, some quite old, make-up. I HATE the clutter/excess but am paralyzed about how to cull it down. What’s your rule of thumb about keeping a drawer full of make-up that is only okay?
I tend to keep the colors and/or formulas I like best and either give the rest to friends or toss it. I’m horrible about buying things like purple glitter shadow and red eyeliner that are completely impractical. Usually I keep those longer than I should because having them keeps me from wasting $ on a dupe that I also won’t wear. If there’s a discontinued color I like but it’s gotten too old I usually keep it to test things against. I have a couple of makeup cases of rarely used makeup in the bottom of my closet that I can pull out for a holiday or special occasion and it’s out of the way and in a cool, dark place the rest of the time.
I’ve also gotten much braver about returning stuff.
I don’t know if you are into sketching but eye palettes etc. make excellent pastels/crayons. Makeup is brilliant for skin tones in drawings. Nail polish for enamel paints. All these things work best on heavy weight water colour paper. Nail polishes on wood or canvas board. Lipstick is a bit trickier but i have used it with oil sticks. But eye palettes are the best as they are so handy and portable…take one and a sketch book next time you go to a cafe or to the park. I just use the aplicator dabber thing r a brush or a finger…depending in how powdery vs. creamy they are. Hairspray for fixative.
Okay, do you ever do yard or garage sales?
It may sound gross to people, but women will buy your half-used makeup. In fact, they will descend on it in droves. They won’t pay more than $3 to $5, but it’s money in my pocket.
Or, take it to work, and put it in the women’s’ restroom with a “FREE” sign hanging over it. It will disappear!!
Throw eye pencils/mascara away! Don’t risk an infection.
I throw stuff in the garbage. No guilt. I did give some lightly used lipsticks (when I was desperate to make red work for me) to a young friend who rocks the red. I used to hold on to stuff for years, but it’s just clutter and now I’ll part with it after a couple of months of neglect. I tend to go for cheaper brands now for that reason. But I’m also not hugely into makeup. I just need a few basic staples.
I am in the throw away without guilt division, but I don’t buy a lot beyond lipstick. With the lippie, roughly once a year I go through and see what’s dried out, what really doesn’t work, and what stays. I have thought occasionally with expensive bad color for me choices I should give them away, but it seems so intimate.
Sorry to go on…but Christmas tree decorations and cards also work…if you know kids into making stuff like that.
Sigh. I just need to buckle down and toss most of it. In my mind, I am someone with just a few items of make-up who enjoys a little color here and there. The truth is I am a totally unschooled consumer–with far too many never used glittery purples and hot pinks (why oh why do we keep doing this MikasMinion?). Kanuka, I love your ideas! It has been years since I’ve sketched out anything other than funny pictures to make my kids laugh… I think I am too impatient now.
Donatella appreciates good lipstick, guaranteed! 🙂
The point is not to finish. 🙂
I showed the husband some You Tube collection and make up videos so he could see that I was a minimalistic in comparison. There has been little comment since then ;-).
Perfect 🙂
LOL!
I’ve tried this. It is no longer working, alas; he just thinks they are insane too!
Less insane at least,
😀
You are, of course!
I never even considered finishing a bottle, and I never have! LOL! 🙂
Dilittante didn’t work for me either and I didn’t get the freshness some describe; my person, as I think I may have mentioned already somewhere, HATED it. Like true loathing. Fascinating what different people smell.
Summer has returned, so I’m back in Diorissimo one more time. I’m not sure if anyone saw my very late posting last night, but I wanted to thank everyone for their positive thoughts for my grandson. He is already out of the hospital and back home, and the doctors are quite optimistic. We were told when he was born that he would probably not see at all, so we feel very grateful that he is able to see, to read and enjoy his 7 year old world. Thank you, thank you, thank you again for your support.
So glad to hear it!!
That’s such good news.
This makes me so happy. Thank you for sharing the news of your little grandson. He will save the world some day, in some way!
Amazing! Amazing!
Oh, that is such heartening news! I’m so happy for you and yours!
Hurray! Hurray for your grandson, your family, and the medical professionals who serve.
What a blessing!
Yay!
I didn’t see your initial post, but what a wonderful thing to hear, and that must have been so stressful and painful to endure! <3
I’m so happy to read this.
So glad to hear! Hoping he continues to improve.
SOTD is Sycomore. Having difficulty with the whole movie theme. I envy all that imagination floating around out there. 🙂
Sorry, not sure how this ended up here.
Wonderful news!
So glad to hear that his surgery went well. That’s wonderful news!
So heartening! Thank you for sharing the update.
Great news. Wishing him a speedy recovery.
What amazing news….and a beautiful post from his loving grandma!
Great to hear it.
What great news and I’m sure a relief to the family!
Glad to hear hes doing ok!
Oh, that is so good to hear!
So glad it went well!!
Wonderful news! w00t!
Very glad to hear about your grandson… ahhhh Diorissimo
I’m wearing my favourite tuberose today. Vamp à New York. It Always lifts my mood and makes me feel better about myself.
Tea is an Earl Grey. Can’t remember which one.
I love the Vamp.
SOTD Chanel Misia. Lots of violets on me. Velvety, powdery and very creamy. It reminds me of Chowards violet candies which I am craving for now. Very comforting and cozy. An absolute love from day number one.
I am a scent cousin swimming in violets as well today….
I adore Chowards violet candies – will have to sample Misia if it smells like that.
Question: I always call them “Choward’s”, but is it not really “C. Howard’s”?
Love. Worried that I should have bought the gallon jug before they switched to EDP.
Eau Parfumée Au Thé Noir (Bulgari).
Not getting any tea so far, just a somewhat screechy magnolia 🙁 Already thinking of scrubbing it… 🙁 🙁 🙁
I was wondering about this one. I’d like to try it out next time I’m at the mall.
Another gorgeous sunny day here in Montreal. The trees are raining colored leaves and I am radiating Bottega Veneta.
Radiate some BV toward me, would you please?
Hi Cazaubon. My bottle of Musc Nomade arrived yesterday and I tried it right away. I like how frosty it is compared to the other musks, it’s quite arid. I really like it a lot. After a while it softens and i get a slightly sweet, and a slightly bitter …almost almond or liqueur ….richness. I really like it. Thank you
So glad to hear it!
1) This past week I have been swatted down by the flu. Get your flu shot people!
2) Back to work with Coromandel, because gosh darn it, it’s smokey and fresh and spicy, just fall perfect.
3) At the movies? Oh fun! The ideas!
feel better
Thank you!
At least you smell wonderful! Feel better soon.
Oh, why thank you! And yes, I am on the mend here!
Ugh. Feel better. Flu shot is in order for me.
So sorry and hope it does not last long!
Getting my flu shot tomorrow! Feel better and in the mean time you smell great.
I got my shot yesterday! Hope you recover soon!
Boo to the flu!
Sigourney Weaver in The Year of Living Dangerously. I imagine her in the somewhat androgynous Annick Goutal Eau d’Hadrien and also suspect she might occasionally have played with an aphrodisiac touch of Javanese ylang-ylang oil.
BTW, here’s an interesting article on traditional uses of ylang-ylang.
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4534619/
Thank you for the link. I loooooove ylang-ylang.
Ditto to both!
You smell great!
you do smell lovely..
I love that movie. Have you seen the movie Balibo…that’s another good one about Australian journalists in East Timor. Anthony La Paglia is tremendous. I like your perfume choice. I don’t have that one so will opt for Wonderwood for my match.
A rare day off from caretaking my very elderly parents and I’m spending it at home with the cat. It’s raining and the perfect day for Gris Clair. I’ve been out of touch this week and didn’t realize the movie theme….I was going to say Gas Light with Charles Boyer but that takes place in Mexico I think so doesn’t really fit. Maybe The Lake House? Kind of odd, compelling and melancholic.
The Lake House would do very nicely as a pairing I think! :^)
Enjoy the day with your cat 🙂
I am pretty sure that Gaslight is supposed to be in London, so Gris Clair should work. Such a great movie! It’s been a favorite of mine since I was 12 or so (we didn’t have cable but my mom let me watch as many old movies as I wanted).
Oh boy, that sounds hard. Good to have a cat day.
For today’s film we jump from the 18thC to the 1960s, for the 2005 film “Brokeback Mountain”. I have always had a kind of attraction/ repulsion thing going on with the life of the American West away from cities and towns, plus if I were the kind of person who cried at movies I would cry at this one. SOTD to match is Tauer “Lonestar Memories”, with its leather and smoke, which I am enjoying hugely. (And I know the Lone Star State is about as far from Wyoming as you can get in the continental US, but, you know, it’s all The Wild West to me).
BM was all about the lie of ‘freedom’ in the american West. Yes, you have all that space and all that beauty, but there are serious, serious constrictions- veer from that path, and you invite death.
amazing pairing..
I don’t think I ever cried as much during the last minutes of a movie than with Brokeback Mountain.I don’t care if it was XX or YY or XY or YX.The universal story about the chance of love, that “so close and yet so far”…I love what Ede said above as well, never thought about the “Land of the free” that way!X
Good choices! Arso would also be great here.
Wearing Bond-T by Sammarco today. I imagine Lara, played by Julie Christie in Doctor Zhivago, smelled like that. To me, it is a somewhat bitter but rich and appealing smell of mature femininity, that went through a lot and, probably, is just close to humanity. I do not know if I really like the movie, but I like Julie Christie in it, and I like the book.
I don’t know the scent, and barely remember the movie, but JC was so gorgeous!
I don’t know the perfume but thise scenes when they’re driving through the deep snow…so beautiful.
Safran Troublant, which is somehow extra delicious today
Ooh, nice one. I have yet to break this out for fall but you have inspired me.
On my wishlist forrrrever!!
I finished my 15-mL a while back and haven’t even unboxed my backup 50-mL, and in fact had kind of forgotten about it. Now I think I have to wear it tomorrow: I just have to find a movie character that it goes with….
Yum…
Wearing (new) Chloé today….love this one. Switching over to Stash tonight before my daughter’s band concert, just because I love it so much too! 🙂
I finally had the inspiration to order a bottle of Florida Water for the challenge tomorrow….It’s the cologne that Scarlet O’Hara used to try and wide her whiskey breath from Rhett. But alas, inspiration came too late and it won’t be here in time. LOL! Have some other ideas percolating though…..
I love that scene! love the whole movie, really.
Florida Water is awesome. DO NOT PUT IT IN YOUR MOUTH.
LOL! Definitely not! I would have splashed in on my decolletage like she did though! HA HA HA 🙂
I didn’t know that. I’ve seen GWTW so many times, and I’ve wondered what type of perfume Scarlett gargled with. Fun fact of the day!
I’m only assuming, because Scarlett’s mama makes a reference to it at some point in the very beginning of the movie? Close enough for me! LOL
“Great balls of fire, [hiccup] it’s Rhett!”
Beautiful Pichola for me today.
You smell stunning!
Beautiful indeed!
Following the continued resurgence of the House of Moschino and it is still warm here so I’m in Moschino Uomo?
Wearing Sisley Eau Du Soir again, just because I missed it 🙂
Hautelook is having Tiziana Terenzi perfumes and candles on sale. I just bought big bottle of Laudano Nero to keep me warm during upcoming cold months!
Cabochard, and tons of it. A very long night shift awaits, complete with monthly open mic event that always goes over the library decibel limit. I need strength which only Madame Gres can give me.
Hang in there..
Twins! You smell fab!
I keep drawing a blank with the movie challenge. I’m currently watching the BBC mini series of Jane Eyre with Ruth Wilson in it. What would any of the characters wear?
Today’s SOTD is vintage Miss Dior EDT. I’ve been wearing quite a bit of either L’Heure Bleue or Amouage offerings and I wasn’t feeling either of them today.
It would be nice if Jane could have smelled of something delicate and airy. Perhaps she would have enjoyed spring flowers which reminds me of Penhaligon’s Ostara.
Of all the Jane Eyre portrayals I’ve seen, I think that BBC series made me the most sad. So beautiful though.
I’m reading The Madwoman Upstairs and enjoying the Bronte references in a modern setting.
Strangely I was thinking “That Jane Eyre one, she’s tougher than she thinks she is” and wondering maybe Sycomore?
Mr Rochester should have tobacco vanille.
And his mad wife in the attic? Narcisse Noir or Salome?
Perhaps Salome, because as soon as you mention Narcisse Noir, well that has to pair with Black Narcissus, doesn’t it?
Have you read Jean Rhys’ “Wide Sargasso Sea”, the story of the first Mrs Rochester told from her viewpoint? Maybe something like Manoumalia for that version of her character.
I also think Jane would be wearing something quietly fierce and tenacious.
Agree with Tiffanie….Poor little Jane would have been too shy to wear anything other than the most gentle of scents….But Mr. Rochester would certainly become aware of it upon first meeting, which she helps him mount his horse! 🙂
Ah, I see. To me Jane is quiet but super tough. Interesting contrasts — and perhaps reflecting different moments of the book and/or movies?
Absolutely! And maybe depending on which adaptation (and which actress!) would change my idea of what she wore as well! 🙂
Years ago, I aspired to become as fit and focused as Linda Hamilton in The Terminator: Judgement Day.
Well, that lasted about 2 days, but I still like seeing her as Sarah Connor, an early tough female action character. SOTD is Le Labo Patchouli 24- smokey machines, a little sweaty animalic note, rounded out with a dry vanilla.
Perrrrrfect!
Linda Hamilton was so amazing as Sarah Connor. I remember seeing her in the TV series Beauty and the Beast and loved her in that, but seeing her so strong in Terminator definitely made a better impression on me.
Hi everyone! This weeks’ SOTDays were really really cool!I love everyone’s choices and already pairing them with movies! My SOTD SmellBent Five.Really gorgeous and so far my favorite from the line. The heart reminds me a little bit of that awesome drydown of Iris Poudre.SmellBent is fast becoming a line I am in love with.Quirky packaging,not-too-bad ad copy,VERY decent pricing and sizes…And Brent Leonesio is a cutie.Lol.Perfect perfume house,in other words!X
*perks up* Five reminds you of the drydown of Iris Poudre?? Hmmmmm.
I did really like One, but I don’t remember the description of Five grabbing me (or anything in it that sounded remotely like that fluffy feather-boa thing I love so much in IP). But… hmmmm.
(And I have a bottle of Iris Poudre now anyway, so I don’t really neeeeeeeed Five…)
Haha!I knew the IP lovers might be interested! It was a random pick for SOTD this morning, but what a lovely surprise! It will never replace my Iris Poudre, but a good plan B if you’re on a budget but still want a niche version of IP.And since Gianfranco Ferre has become superhard to find,a way better option in the same vein as IP!
Iris Nazarena today. Biting cold wind today, time to unpack the ambers.
I think IN is good in the cold though too! Although perhaps not the wind?
Chanel No. 5 Premiere.
I didn’t know today was Carole Lombard’s birthday. What a beautiful, funny lady. I love seeing the black and white old Hollywood pictures of her wearing lovely satin evening gowns
She was such a great actress. My Man Godfrey might be my favorite movie ever.
Oh that is a great one.
I love looking at all the clothes in classic movies (and black and white photos) and wondering what colors they were. But I really don’t like colorized films–go figure!
I’ve often wondered how do know what colors to use when they colorize the films?
In close quarter meetings all day, so I am in Chanel No 18 today.
Narciso edp for me today, just a tiny spritz under my shirt as I’m working today. Can’t think of a movie to match, but I’m set for tomorrow and enjoying everyone else’s pairings today.
Twins!
I’m wearing Putain des Palaces today. No idea what I’m going to do for tomorrow.
Today: Vivian Ward (Julia Roberts), Pretty Woman?
Perfect!
I’ve not really thought much about the challenge, but some of these responses are amazing so far.
I more or less just wore what I thought would go well with my outfit: ivory silk shirt, light colored jeans, and cognac colored ankle boots. I’m in Erdenstern by April Aromatics – sweetness, tobacco and cacao.
That sounds really good. I haven’t really explored the AA line. Must remedy.
I’ve tried Calling All Angels by AA. It’s a really nice incense frag.
That does sound nice. I think the only one I recall trying in skin was Bohemian Spice which was nice, too.
Still in the midst of a cold and can barely smell at all today, so just some Nubian Heritage Honey and Black Seed lotion and hoping I smell sufficiently pleasant today.
I hope you feel better soon. It seems like colds take forever to go away.
Thanks, Petunia! I actually feel a lot better, but my sense of smell hasn’t caught up yet.
Get better! I have a friend who only wears Amarige and when she has a cold she gives it an extra spray. Seems to do the trick!
Thanks! That also seems like an effective infection control measure. It’ll keep people at a safe distance so they won’t catch anything. I used to wear Amarige myself.
Re-sampling Guerlain Charnel Elixir Floral Romantique. This got panned for being too derivative, too simplistic, too simperingly pretty, and WAY too expensive for the smell.
I can’t really argue on the pricing; it costs too much and not for good reason. But I really, really like it. I mean, I know, I KNOOOOW, it’s not like buying an Amouage… but if I had it, I’d probably wear it a lot. Grrr.
I had that same internal debate with my last FB purchase. It didn’t smell expensive to me. In fact it smells like a bunch of maybe better synthetics. But I looove it, and I’ve made a bigger dent in this bottle in a month, than I’ve made in some other pricier things I’ve owned for over a year. So, money well spent, I say. Of course, I may be totally over it by next month, but that’s another story.
I bought this and then returned it while back…
I just didn’t see it as anything special to justify the price..
Money saved. Thank goodness BG’s has a nice return policy
I feel like my favorite old movies require some vintage perfumes that I don’t know or have – even if they still exist. What would Veronica Lake wear in Sullivan’s Travels? Or Barbara Stanwyck in The Lady Eve? Both would have been stolen!
Today I’m wearing New Sibet on which I was complimented by a hip young female Lyft driver. Scarlett Johanson in Lost in Translation maybe? I wish!
Hey, that’s fun, I was thinking of Charlotte today, too. 🙂
I am trying Benjoin Bohème today…
Lots of wood and patchouli. Quite nice.
My man Godfrey! I love that movie! 😀
I’m in No. 19 today, and when I think about what character might smell like this, I think of someone like Connie in Lady Chatterley’s Lover (the book, not any of the various movies) — cool, poised, well-bred, but secretly wild at heart, at home in the dryad loveliness of the English wilderness in springtime.
I was running late this morning so grabbed a scent on the fly that I didn’t have to think about. I am wearing Alaia Paris which is a great office friendly no-brainer scent for me. I can’t think of any movie that it could relate to unfortunately. It’s not edgy enough for Vertical Limit which I will never watch anyway because I hate movies about heights. 🙂
I loved Alaia so much in the store I immediately bought it!But with Zadig and Voltaire This is her!,I should have waited a bit for it to develop. There has been a “screechy” note in new releases that surfaces on my skin after about an hour or so.I don’t know if it’s a synthetic or a particular musk, but it bothers me a lot!(Sorry,”screechy” is the only way I can describe that note!Lol!)Otherwise a lovely fragrance!X
My bottle was a gift from a dear friend. I probably wouldn’t have chosen it myself but I do really enjoy it. Fortunately, I do not experience a screechy note. It just sort of fades away gracefully around the six hour mark. At least, I can’t smell it anymore. I think Alaia has a big dose of musk. I wonder if that’s what bothers you? Hopefully you were able to return yours? If not, you can always re-gift it. I think it would make a perfect gift for a new perfumista. Plus the bottle is gorgeous!
Also, I prefer Alaia in cooler weather so maybe try it at another time of year?
Ah,yes! Now that you mention it!I did purchase during last summer, tried to wear it during summer(screeeeech!!)and ignored it this past winter because of that! We’re in early Spring now,so I’ll wait for a cloudy, rainy day to retry!Thank you!I did keep it because the bottle is pretty.Lol.X
In Shalimar. Movie? Perhaps Miss Kenton in The Remains of the Day would have had a small bottle of this–the same bottle for decades still in the box wrapped in cotton– for dreaming of love and friendship, and freedom.
Oh goodness, that is such a perfect pairing!!I can only imagine her unwrapping Shalimar and having a dreamy whiff! Her own secret pleasure.Love that.
One of my favourite movies is Nanni Morretti’s Caro Diaro ( Dear Diary). It’s a kind of autobiographical fiction in three parts: in the first he drives his vespa through Rome looking at buildings, meets Jennifer Beales, part two he travels with a writer friend to the volcanic islands, can’t find peace and quiet and talks about American soap opera, part three he discovers he has Hodgkins disease and is tormented by itching and drugs. Brilliant film. Terre d’ Hermes for the volcanic section, Chamade for the Rome section, and I can’t think of the third perfume.
Tokyo Milk Novacaine [sic]?
Good one!
The name fits, but also because I found it very discordant and if I had done more than a small spritz, I would have wanted to jump out of my skin!
I don’t know it (no surprises there). I was thinking of something that captures a sense of stillness, almost emptiness
I can’t either, but I’m a huge fan of the film. Did you ever watch any of his other work?
I was very impressed by La stanza del figlio.
That is another gem of a film – how the grief plays out is so subtle and believable . I also liked him in an acting role in Quiet Chaos (which also starred Hippolyte Giradot). The book is also terrific.
Now I want to watch movies all day.
Instead I’m wearing Divine L’âme Sœur in an attempt to feel glamorous. It ain’t workin’ but I love it’s slightly retro feel and girly softness. I can imagine Jane Powell’s character in Royal Wedding wafting it as she puts on her vapid wide-eyed act and breaks another heart.
Today is my Mom’s birthday and I was supposed to be baking a cake and making pulled pork but someone didn’t get the roast out of the freezer soon enough and a different someone put the butter that was out to soften away in the freezer (?!) Instead I’m outside moving gravel and helping Mr. Minion finish Mom’s cactus garden.
SOTD is Chanel’s Boy. I love this scent!
SOTD = Chanel No. 19 EDP
Bottle No. 1 is dwindling, about 40% remaining. If I wear this twice a week from now on, I predict I will drain it by early next year. Then I’ll display the empty bottle proudly.
Empty bottle = badge of honor 🙂
It sure is!
Satisfying, isn’t it? Will that be your first drained bottle?
It will be my 3rd: Buberry Brit Sheer was first, then Kelly Caleche EDP. I have to check the level of Un Jardin Sur le Toit which i think is less than 1/3 remaining. I found that as my collection grew, even the ones I wear often and with a heavy hand, tend to take a while for me to notice a drop.
Oh wait, I forgot about 2 others! Shu Uemura Fleur de Terre and Fleur de Source! I was layering these 2 before layering got fashionable 🙂
Current or vintage please?
I haven’t sniffed No. 19 in a long time and am going to buy myself a little bottle methinks.
I have been wondering if I should do EDT or EDP and then current or vintage.
Current formulation EDP is fantastic!
Just returned from an eye doctor appointment for which I was dutifully unscented. Now I’m gently spritzing Iris Ukiyoe. I imagine Lost in Translation’s Charlotte might wear this scent as she walks through Nanzen-ji Temple. Hope you have a thankful Thursday, NST.
Sandalwood day today. Wearing mostly Tam Dao, sprayed generously since the stuff does not last on me, such a calming cedar-y sandalwood with a musky rose. Irreplaceable. On one wrist though is a couple of drops of Santal Majuscule and it could not be more different than Tam Dao. Where Tam Dao is meditative, Santa Majuscule is an indulgent, chocolate milk-y, Turkish delight. Both however are oh so comforting.
I’ve been sampling both of those lately. I like both, but I want to try the other SL sandal woods before adding them to my FB list.
I have been wearing SM as well- bought a Tam Dao sample for a friend & should have bought 2!
Santal Magiscule is powerful or I overdid it in my excitement. ! So I took a day off and then balanced with Sycomore!
My SOTD is Memnto Mori.
It is really lovely…… thinking of a scent to match the all time family fav: Bringing Up Baby!! Chanel or Caron maybe!!??? What.A.Classic‼️
SOTD is Cabochard (current formulation).
I’m wracking my brain to come up with a creative choice for tomorrow’s challenge. I actually had an idea last week, but I haven’t been able to dislodge it in order to find something a little less obvious. It’s a pretty perfect fit, though, so I’ll probably go with it…
I have not come up with anything yet so if I don’t come up with something tonight, I will watch from the sidelines.
I am wearing Un Jardin apres la Mousson both for John Ford’s Hurricane (not great, but full of pre-code fun) and wishful thinking for Matthew.
I am drinking some MF Haute Mer.
Wearing the last of my little decant of 5’o clock au Gingembre today.
I’m enjoying the movie scent matching you all are doing! So clever.
SOTD = CdG’s Red Carnation. Taking some notes for a compare and contrast to Bellodogia. Both smell great!
You smell great. My only complaint with CdG Red Carnation is that it has very poor longevity on me: 4 spritzes = < 2 hours
Red Carnation lasts better on my clothes than on my skin. Not sure I’ll have a next day drydown on my shirt with this, though.
I’m late to post today – SOTD is Le Galion Iris, which, it turns out, is a VERY nice scent for fall. It was great last spring and summer too, so if it continues as wonderfully through winter, it will be one of very few perfumes I own that is a true four-season fragrance.
Mmmmm 😉
My all seasons perfume include Chanel No. 19 EDP, Prada Infusion d’Iris Absolue, Atelier Cologne Sous le Toot de Paris, Chanel No. 5 EDT, Kelly Caleche EDP, 28 La Pausa
I had a sample given to me of that J. Crew #57 with 1 use still in it, so had avoided trying it in case I liked it, and the absurdity of the logic finally failed so I’m trying it. It’s a little fruitier, but fits in the same category as Havana Vanille, which I have a bit of…
SOTD was A Lab on Fire – What We Do in Paris is Secret – I’m pretty much loving this one. It’s sweet, but not sickly so – almost fresh sweet – if there is such a thing 🙂 Ok a movie – Moulin Rouge, Amelie, or maybe you like action – From Paris with Love – I mean it’s Paris so we are not at a lack for movies set there or about there. Who doesn’t love Paris – the history, the architecture, the clothes, the scents, the food – not necessarily in that order of course 🙂
Toward the evening my earlier scent had faded a bit, and I rec’d a special splurge from Lucky Scent – and it had a sample of Amouage Lilac Love in it – so of course I had to dab it on – and I don’t think I’m grown up enough – at least in perfume years – for Amouage yet – I can’t seem to find one of their scents that I can tolerate. If I had to choose one this would prob be it as it seems much more tame? than others of theirs I’ve tried – Jubilation 25, Beloved Woman. I’ve wanted to try Lyric, but now I’m totally leery of this brand as a whole. I’ll give a while and try again as everyone seems to rave about it quite a bit.
I started the day scentless because I was attending a Continuing Education thing in a giant hotel ballroom. They cram the seats so close together I didn’t want to wear anything lest I bother the person next to me who would undoubtedly be sitting nearly in my lap. However, at lunchtime I walked to a nearby Sephora where I figured I’d be safe with a comparison spritz of No. 5 L’Eau and Eau Premiere. Both were nice but not true loves, but what amazed me is that the drydown of both is almost identical to my nose. Eau Premiere is a bit powdery, but other than that…
