Thursday scent of the day 10/6

Posted by Robin on 6 October 2016 247 Comments

My Man Godfrey movie poster

Happy Almost Friday! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing Lorenzo Villoresi Dilmun (from a rather old, not quite perfect decant) for Carole Lombard in My Man Godfrey (1936). (Update: plus, it's Carole Lombard's birthday.)

Reminder: on 10/7 we're doing "At the movies" — name a favorite movie, and wear a perfume that fits the movie or a character in the movie.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Deliria, L’Artisan Parfumeur. Cold, hard, steel, softened by a dessert like, sweetness of character, all with the texture of supple leather. Hmmm, who could this possibly be? Of course – its Edward Scissorhands!

I decided to indulge in Nasomatto’s China White. There’s definitely something very retro about this smell, and I love it.

I admit I have a bit of trouble with perfume for tomorrow — my favorite movie is 1984 Ghostbusters, and I can’t really imagine most of the characters wearing perfume. I guess Egon would probably wear some, but I don’t what would make a perfect Eau de Egon. I guess Jeanine wears perfume, and Dana as well, but what kind of perfume? If anyone has any ideas, let me know!

Nasomatto! Haven’t smelled China White, but I totally loved their bottles and both of their scents that I tried. Mmmm, what a fabulous (and luxurious!) line.

OMG Original Ghostbusters was one of my obsessions as a kid (the movies AND the cartoon series because yeah.)

Dana: Would be in Chanel 19- it’s fresh, composed and classy. Very Upper East Side of Manhattan.

Janine: With her first paycheck she would have blown it at Macy’s to get a bottle of the hottest, Fendi, and very, oh so carefully sprayed on pulse points, because girl should not be so obvious.

Egon: He is always being summoned at a moment’s notice, chasing down spirits and getting slimed! He would love to wear perfume, but he is in the paranormal business, and spirits are sometimes attracted to per-fume (through the smoke- one of the original ways to summon the spirit world). So Egon would wear something very fresh and easy to splash- and is used in rituals to repel spirits! So I think someting like Florida Water, Kanaga Water or Eau de Hungary (all available in NYC circa 1984) .

If you did feel like trying – and I certainly don’t always – the trick to this one I think is to find the perfume first and attribute the story afterwards. If you wore Lieu de Reves tomorrow, you could pair it with “Field of Dreams” or “What Dreams May Come” based on the name, or link it to a star the soft powdery notes make you think of. Or wear something you detest and claim it makes you think of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. ;^)

This is the first week it’s seemed like fall so I’ve completely switched gears and today am wearing Serge Lutens Fourreau Noir, which isn’t specifically autumnal but fits right in, with its smoke-dark licorice-y lavender.

I pretty much had to toss a coin between Fourreau Noir and Santal de Mysore when I visited the SL shop – couldn’t afford both, and would have been happy with either. My partner’s love of sandalwood swung it for SdM. :^)

You chose well. SdM is glorious.

Being in the Lutens boutique and having to choose is just torture, isn’t it? I’m still kicking myself for not buying La Myrrhe when I was in the shop four or five years ago. I don’t regret my actual purchases (Fourreau Noir and Fumerie Turque) but I understand LM has been reformulated quite a bit and I want it the way it was. At least I went through a biggish decant so I have the memory of it.

Can’t do the movie thing today…. Celebrating my Giants win with oranges… Seville a L’Aube.

Apologies to my Mets fan friends. Any other team playing them, I’d be right there saying Let’s Go Mets. I love Citifield. But my heart goes back to freezing at Candlestick.

Congratulations! On the Giants and the haircut. I am not a big baseball fan, but my person is and he was very sad that the Mets and the Giants were facing off, and now the Giants vs the Snubbies. I do like the Giants, though, because they have the most awesome names in baseball at the moment: Buster Posey, Angel Pagan, Madison Bumgarden . . . and a guy named Belt! I mean, who can root against that?

Yes, I know, Mets and Cubs fans!

I got my split of HG Dilettante last night, so I sprayed it first thing today! It’s a gorgeous orange blossom, but it’s so monolithic that I’m afraid I don’t get the hype around it. I’ll enjoy my decant, but I don’t think I’ll ever be interested in a FB (though those are the cutest bottles!).

Mon chéri is visiting me from the US right now, so I showed him the damage polls! His jaw fell open in shock and horror. “But they can’t ever finish all that perfume!” he said. Silly boy. He doesn’t get us.

I have minimal interest in beauty products! This is best, because my bank account is weak enough without that added temptation. Lipsticks are all just…lipsticks to me! My mother gave me a great Dior lipstick that I used down to the nub, but when I went to replace it, I went with a 10€ Kiko lipstick, just because the color was fine and I liked the packaging >.<

Diving in here with the burning question of my adult life: What should I do about my drawer full of make-up that I am not in love with, but am sort of okay with? Because so many times I have bought proper expensive, department store make-up and then fallen out of love with it once I got home–I now mostly buy on sale, Kiko, or drugstore store products–most of which I am equally meh about. So I have a drawer filled with hundreds of dollars worth of cheap and expensive, some quite old, make-up. I HATE the clutter/excess but am paralyzed about how to cull it down. What’s your rule of thumb about keeping a drawer full of make-up that is only okay?

I tend to keep the colors and/or formulas I like best and either give the rest to friends or toss it. I’m horrible about buying things like purple glitter shadow and red eyeliner that are completely impractical. Usually I keep those longer than I should because having them keeps me from wasting $ on a dupe that I also won’t wear. If there’s a discontinued color I like but it’s gotten too old I usually keep it to test things against. I have a couple of makeup cases of rarely used makeup in the bottom of my closet that I can pull out for a holiday or special occasion and it’s out of the way and in a cool, dark place the rest of the time.
I’ve also gotten much braver about returning stuff.

I don’t know if you are into sketching but eye palettes etc. make excellent pastels/crayons. Makeup is brilliant for skin tones in drawings. Nail polish for enamel paints. All these things work best on heavy weight water colour paper. Nail polishes on wood or canvas board. Lipstick is a bit trickier but i have used it with oil sticks. But eye palettes are the best as they are so handy and portable…take one and a sketch book next time you go to a cafe or to the park. I just use the aplicator dabber thing r a brush or a finger…depending in how powdery vs. creamy they are. Hairspray for fixative.

Okay, do you ever do yard or garage sales?

It may sound gross to people, but women will buy your half-used makeup. In fact, they will descend on it in droves. They won’t pay more than $3 to $5, but it’s money in my pocket.

Or, take it to work, and put it in the women’s’ restroom with a “FREE” sign hanging over it. It will disappear!!

I throw stuff in the garbage. No guilt. I did give some lightly used lipsticks (when I was desperate to make red work for me) to a young friend who rocks the red. I used to hold on to stuff for years, but it’s just clutter and now I’ll part with it after a couple of months of neglect. I tend to go for cheaper brands now for that reason. But I’m also not hugely into makeup. I just need a few basic staples.

          • Amy says:
            6 October 2016 at 4:06 pm

I am in the throw away without guilt division, but I don’t buy a lot beyond lipstick. With the lippie, roughly once a year I go through and see what’s dried out, what really doesn’t work, and what stays. I have thought occasionally with expensive bad color for me choices I should give them away, but it seems so intimate.

Sigh. I just need to buckle down and toss most of it. In my mind, I am someone with just a few items of make-up who enjoys a little color here and there. The truth is I am a totally unschooled consumer–with far too many never used glittery purples and hot pinks (why oh why do we keep doing this MikasMinion?). Kanuka, I love your ideas! It has been years since I’ve sketched out anything other than funny pictures to make my kids laugh… I think I am too impatient now.

Summer has returned, so I’m back in Diorissimo one more time. I’m not sure if anyone saw my very late posting last night, but I wanted to thank everyone for their positive thoughts for my grandson. He is already out of the hospital and back home, and the doctors are quite optimistic. We were told when he was born that he would probably not see at all, so we feel very grateful that he is able to see, to read and enjoy his 7 year old world. Thank you, thank you, thank you again for your support.

Hi Cazaubon. My bottle of Musc Nomade arrived yesterday and I tried it right away. I like how frosty it is compared to the other musks, it’s quite arid. I really like it a lot. After a while it softens and i get a slightly sweet, and a slightly bitter …almost almond or liqueur ….richness. I really like it. Thank you

Sigourney Weaver in The Year of Living Dangerously. I imagine her in the somewhat androgynous Annick Goutal Eau d’Hadrien and also suspect she might occasionally have played with an aphrodisiac touch of Javanese ylang-ylang oil.

A rare day off from caretaking my very elderly parents and I’m spending it at home with the cat. It’s raining and the perfect day for Gris Clair. I’ve been out of touch this week and didn’t realize the movie theme….I was going to say Gas Light with Charles Boyer but that takes place in Mexico I think so doesn’t really fit. Maybe The Lake House? Kind of odd, compelling and melancholic.

For today’s film we jump from the 18thC to the 1960s, for the 2005 film “Brokeback Mountain”. I have always had a kind of attraction/ repulsion thing going on with the life of the American West away from cities and towns, plus if I were the kind of person who cried at movies I would cry at this one. SOTD to match is Tauer “Lonestar Memories”, with its leather and smoke, which I am enjoying hugely. (And I know the Lone Star State is about as far from Wyoming as you can get in the continental US, but, you know, it’s all The Wild West to me).

Wearing Bond-T by Sammarco today. I imagine Lara, played by Julie Christie in Doctor Zhivago, smelled like that. To me, it is a somewhat bitter but rich and appealing smell of mature femininity, that went through a lot and, probably, is just close to humanity. I do not know if I really like the movie, but I like Julie Christie in it, and I like the book.

I keep drawing a blank with the movie challenge. I’m currently watching the BBC mini series of Jane Eyre with Ruth Wilson in it. What would any of the characters wear?

Today’s SOTD is vintage Miss Dior EDT. I’ve been wearing quite a bit of either L’Heure Bleue or Amouage offerings and I wasn’t feeling either of them today.

It would be nice if Jane could have smelled of something delicate and airy. Perhaps she would have enjoyed spring flowers which reminds me of Penhaligon’s Ostara.

Of all the Jane Eyre portrayals I’ve seen, I think that BBC series made me the most sad. So beautiful though.

I’m reading The Madwoman Upstairs and enjoying the Bronte references in a modern setting.

Perhaps Salome, because as soon as you mention Narcisse Noir, well that has to pair with Black Narcissus, doesn’t it?

Have you read Jean Rhys’ “Wide Sargasso Sea”, the story of the first Mrs Rochester told from her viewpoint? Maybe something like Manoumalia for that version of her character.

        • Amy says:

I also think Jane would be wearing something quietly fierce and tenacious.

Agree with Tiffanie….Poor little Jane would have been too shy to wear anything other than the most gentle of scents….But Mr. Rochester would certainly become aware of it upon first meeting, which she helps him mount his horse! :)

Years ago, I aspired to become as fit and focused as Linda Hamilton in The Terminator: Judgement Day.
Well, that lasted about 2 days, but I still like seeing her as Sarah Connor, an early tough female action character. SOTD is Le Labo Patchouli 24- smokey machines, a little sweaty animalic note, rounded out with a dry vanilla.

I’ve not really thought much about the challenge, but some of these responses are amazing so far.

I more or less just wore what I thought would go well with my outfit: ivory silk shirt, light colored jeans, and cognac colored ankle boots. I’m in Erdenstern by April Aromatics – sweetness, tobacco and cacao.

Re-sampling Guerlain Charnel Elixir Floral Romantique. This got panned for being too derivative, too simplistic, too simperingly pretty, and WAY too expensive for the smell.

I can’t really argue on the pricing; it costs too much and not for good reason. But I really, really like it. I mean, I know, I KNOOOOW, it’s not like buying an Amouage… but if I had it, I’d probably wear it a lot. Grrr.

I had that same internal debate with my last FB purchase. It didn’t smell expensive to me. In fact it smells like a bunch of maybe better synthetics. But I looove it, and I’ve made a bigger dent in this bottle in a month, than I’ve made in some other pricier things I’ve owned for over a year. So, money well spent, I say. Of course, I may be totally over it by next month, but that’s another story.

I feel like my favorite old movies require some vintage perfumes that I don’t know or have – even if they still exist. What would Veronica Lake wear in Sullivan’s Travels? Or Barbara Stanwyck in The Lady Eve? Both would have been stolen!

Today I’m wearing New Sibet on which I was complimented by a hip young female Lyft driver. Scarlett Johanson in Lost in Translation maybe? I wish!

I’m in No. 19 today, and when I think about what character might smell like this, I think of someone like Connie in Lady Chatterley’s Lover (the book, not any of the various movies) — cool, poised, well-bred, but secretly wild at heart, at home in the dryad loveliness of the English wilderness in springtime.

I was running late this morning so grabbed a scent on the fly that I didn’t have to think about. I am wearing Alaia Paris which is a great office friendly no-brainer scent for me. I can’t think of any movie that it could relate to unfortunately. It’s not edgy enough for Vertical Limit which I will never watch anyway because I hate movies about heights. :)

I loved Alaia so much in the store I immediately bought it!But with Zadig and Voltaire This is her!,I should have waited a bit for it to develop. There has been a “screechy” note in new releases that surfaces on my skin after about an hour or so.I don’t know if it’s a synthetic or a particular musk, but it bothers me a lot!(Sorry,”screechy” is the only way I can describe that note!Lol!)Otherwise a lovely fragrance!X

My bottle was a gift from a dear friend. I probably wouldn’t have chosen it myself but I do really enjoy it. Fortunately, I do not experience a screechy note. It just sort of fades away gracefully around the six hour mark. At least, I can’t smell it anymore. I think Alaia has a big dose of musk. I wonder if that’s what bothers you? Hopefully you were able to return yours? If not, you can always re-gift it. I think it would make a perfect gift for a new perfumista. Plus the bottle is gorgeous!

One of my favourite movies is Nanni Morretti’s Caro Diaro ( Dear Diary). It’s a kind of autobiographical fiction in three parts: in the first he drives his vespa through Rome looking at buildings, meets Jennifer Beales, part two he travels with a writer friend to the volcanic islands, can’t find peace and quiet and talks about American soap opera, part three he discovers he has Hodgkins disease and is tormented by itching and drugs. Brilliant film. Terre d’ Hermes for the volcanic section, Chamade for the Rome section, and I can’t think of the third perfume.

Instead I’m wearing Divine L’âme Sœur in an attempt to feel glamorous. It ain’t workin’ but I love it’s slightly retro feel and girly softness. I can imagine Jane Powell’s character in Royal Wedding wafting it as she puts on her vapid wide-eyed act and breaks another heart.
Today is my Mom’s birthday and I was supposed to be baking a cake and making pulled pork but someone didn’t get the roast out of the freezer soon enough and a different someone put the butter that was out to soften away in the freezer (?!) Instead I’m outside moving gravel and helping Mr. Minion finish Mom’s cactus garden.

It will be my 3rd: Buberry Brit Sheer was first, then Kelly Caleche EDP. I have to check the level of Un Jardin Sur le Toit which i think is less than 1/3 remaining. Sandalwood day today. Wearing mostly Tam Dao, sprayed generously since the stuff does not last on me, such a calming cedar-y sandalwood with a musky rose. Irreplaceable. On one wrist though is a couple of drops of Santal Majuscule and it could not be more different than Tam Dao. Where Tam Dao is meditative, Santa Majuscule is an indulgent, chocolate milk-y, Turkish delight. Both however are oh so comforting.

SOTD was A Lab on Fire – What We Do in Paris is Secret – I’m pretty much loving this one. It’s sweet, but not sickly so – almost fresh sweet – if there is such a thing :) Ok a movie – Moulin Rouge, Amelie, or maybe you like action – From Paris with Love – I mean it’s Paris so we are not at a lack for movies set there or about there. Who doesn’t love Paris – the history, the architecture, the clothes, the scents, the food – not necessarily in that order of course :)

Toward the evening my earlier scent had faded a bit, and I rec’d a special splurge from Lucky Scent – and it had a sample of Amouage Lilac Love in it – so of course I had to dab it on – and I don’t think I’m grown up enough – at least in perfume years – for Amouage yet – I can’t seem to find one of their scents that I can tolerate. If I had to choose one this would prob be it as it seems much more tame? than others of theirs I’ve tried – Jubilation 25, Beloved Woman. I’ve wanted to try Lyric, but now I’m totally leery of this brand as a whole. I’ll give a while and try again as everyone seems to rave about it quite a bit.

I started the day scentless because I was attending a Continuing Education thing in a giant hotel ballroom. They cram the seats so close together I didn’t want to wear anything lest I bother the person next to me who would undoubtedly be sitting nearly in my lap. However, at lunchtime I walked to a nearby Sephora where I figured I’d be safe with a comparison spritz of No. 5 L’Eau and Eau Premiere. Both were nice but not true loves, but what amazed me is that the drydown of both is almost identical to my nose. Eau Premiere is a bit powdery, but other than that…
