Thursday scent of the day 9/1

Posted by Robin on 1 September 2016 243 Comments

apple rabbit

Rabbit, rabbit, rabbit! Happy Almost-Friday, and welcome, like it or not, to September. It's also Random Acts of Kindness Day, and Lily Tomlin's birthday. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Dawn Spencer Hurwitz Kaleidoscope, again. I think this one is going on my buy list.

Reminder: On 9/2, our project will be How far does the apple fall from the tree? Wear a pillar fragrance on one arm, and one of its flankers on the other. Suggested by Happy888cat.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

SOTD: Le Labo Gaiac 10. It’s that very special time of year when I talk myself in and out of buying it for the rest of the month!

PSA for fragonerds who are also regular nerds: M.A.C Star Trek hits counters today! I have my eye on the Khaaaaan! lipgloss, and maybe the Highly Illogical highlighter.

SOTD is Rouge Bunny Rouge “Embers”.
    Top: pink pepper, nutmeg, cloves;
    Mid: incense, freesia, jasmine, labdanum
Base: wood notes, peru balsam, styrax.

A serviceable lightweight incense of the non-liturgical variety.

Well, I’m gonna have to find a sample of Dawn Spencer Hurwitz Kaleidoscope! Sounds too good to miss!!

My parfum du jour: La Perla J’aime les Fleurs. Will soon be time to put this away and reach for deeper fall scents, but this is a goodie!

    Hark! Friday approaches! 🙂

It is a little offbeat, with some vague relationship maybe to Annick Goutal Folavril but a little bit weirder and closer to unisex.

Practicing for tomorrow–I am wearing M7 and M7 Fresh. I like them both but they have nothing to do with each other.

I am drinking some MG Montagne d’Or. It is very fruity.

      Kerbside Violet fiber cream?

Yes. I’d bought a tub of Everyman Jack’s unscented matte finish fiber cream. Great product but not very pleasant to the nose. It had a horribly sterile, embalming fluid scent so I remedied the situation by melting down a quarter of a tin of Kerbside Violet solid perfume and mixing it in. I now realize why they add parfum to everything. Cosmetic ingredients do not smell so great on their own.

Oh so right about the smell of cosmetic ingredients. Many years ago when I was using Neutrogena soap my drugstore started stocking an “unscented” version and a “fragrance free” version. Fragrance free was disgusting!!
I agree that there’s a good reason that you see parfum/fragrance in an ingredient list, even though there is no specific scent is intended.

Your solution to fix the problem is brilliant.

Vanilia is the ultimate, isn’t it? I have a whole lot of vanillas (a bunch of Maison de la Vanille, a bunch of the CSPs, and some others besides), and Vanilia is the king. Discontinuing it, or rather reworking it into Havana Vanille slash Vanille Absolument, was such a mistake.

I’m in Opus IV, which is a bit too spicy for today’s weather. It’s the most spicy of all the Library Collection. For some reason I put this in my sample stash to use up now instead of later this winter when it’s probably more appropriate. Oh well.

Reports week has started. I’m not overly stressed out about it for a change because I changed up my work schedule so I’m not drowning in stuff. I think I’ll easily have most of it done by the end of tomorrow.

The weather is supposed to be gorgeous this weekend so I think we’re putting the kitchen reno on hold to go hiking.

It’s the best kind of compliment, isn’t it? I used to work with a lab tech who loved perfume but had a limited collection and a good nose. I recently worked with her again and she instantly commented on my perfume. It smelled unusual and classy, according to her. I was wearing Songe d’un Bois d’Eté.

    Chanel No. 5 Premiere.

I’m starting to get clothes together for my France trip. We leave Wednesday ☺. Yay!

I’ve been checking out blogs for guidance as to what to pack. It looks like the weather will be hot. Some articles say no sandals, while some say sandals are okay as long as they’re dressy. Some say do not wear heels. I was going to pack heels for dinner (two dinners in particular), but I don’t want to look out of place. Then, I was thinking of wearing keds with a sundress, but some blogs say absolutely no tennis shoes. My daughter said I’m over thinking this, but I’d like to look nice.

    I’m confused! Still happy though.

I only tried 3 of them- I wasn’t drawn to even try Elfin Spring. Did you try that one? I like Miyako but probably wouldn’t wear it. Regal Secret I could barely smell after 5 minutes. This one I really like and would wear it. It seems seasonless as well.

Elfin springs was nice but too green for me – I could appreciate the quality. I can see it being a hit. Regal secret is lite on me as well but I spray it on clothes – it adds to staying power.

I remembered to quietly say rabbit, rabbit, rabbit when I woke up at 2 because my back hurt. I hope that counts, because it was NOT the first thing I said when my husband nudged me and asked if I was getting up today 😉
I’m starting out in Azemour and will report back on the SOTAfternoon when the lawn is done. I rarely have back troubles but am really very uncomfortable today. I sneezed out of nowhere yesterday morning when I was laying on my back and didn’t get my abs engaged and my knees pulled up in time. Seems like an especially stupid way to injure myself and is making me extra snarly about it.

Vintage Miss Dior, which i borrowed from my mom. Back when I was a kid, this was a fragrance I simply couldn’t understand — to me, it smelled sharp and ugly. Alongside black coffee (bah! it’s bitter and weird) and Billy Joel songs (boooring), I thought it was one of those things that grown ups convince themselves that they like.

Now that I’m approaching my 30s, black coffee is really the only coffee I drink, and I quite like Billy Joel. I also adore Miss Dior Original, and the way it develops on skin& In fact, I don’t really understand how I could call it ugly! Miss Dior is complex and beautiful.

SOTD is my first corporate “niche”: Stella by Stella McCartney. I wasn’t in the mood for roses for most of summer, but now that fall is just around the corner, it seemed like the right choice. I haven’t worn this for a very long time and I’m really enjoying it today.

SOTD is Volutes Edt, which I still love. A lot.

OOTD is denim skinnies with zippers at the ankle, which jangle nicely when I walk and remind me of the jingle of spurs. Top half is a dark raspberry silk shirt, and shoes are neutral blingy gladiators.

I’m venturing out today into the wetness. We have had about a foot of rain here, and I’m hoping everyone path of Hermine makes it through without any damage. For some, I think the worst is yet to come. Stay safe and smelling good, NSTers!

Wearing D&G Light Blue today. It’s nostalgic because when my friend visited from Vienna she brought a bottle with her (it was her signature scent,) but then unfortunately dropped it on the ceramic tile floor and the bottle broke. Really upsetting, but a good memory because my bathroom smelled like her for quite a while, thereby completely solidifying the scent memory and perfume association.

A commentor on BdJp sent me a sample of Scherrer Eau de Parfum (I’m not sure if that is easily available in the US) and I wearing it. This is really very good, close to no 19 and possibly, just maybe, even better. She also sent me Jasmine White Moss, very close to Cristalle, Diorella, OJ Tiare. Very lovely. Discontinued but in the Netherlands still availabe. And can one have too many chypres?

Apparently they all did, but I did not even know until somebody pointed it out this week. Has something to do with Gravatar.com, which is where the avatars all come from whether you specify one with a custom picture or not. Sorry if you don’t like your new one, there’s nothing I can do! And for all I know they will go back to how they were.

Or, it only takes about 5 minutes to set up a custom one, assuming you already have a picture in mind…

I also loved Pure Incense, Thebes and Reve Narcotique. I liked the rest of his line as well but these are Loves 🙂 I just wish they came as sprayers, but I am slowly getting used to the attars.

Wearing the last remnants of SJP’s Stash from a quick Ulta run. Might have gone a bit overboard with the paper/ skin/ clothing testing in the store, but it’s important to know these things!

I was afraid it might be too similar to 1270, which I already own and love, but I think it is just a step or two over the unisex line towards masculine, while 1270 has more gourmand-ness. I also don’t find it to have a true “BO” note as referenced in the ad copy. It’s more like that skin feeling you have after wearing a scent the whole day, not necessarily low on projection, but soft and blurred around the edges.

IMO, definitely a great SJP addition and will be coming home with me for a place in the fall lineup.

Omnia on one wrist, Crystalline on the other. Omnia started out promising, floral and spicy and a little creamy all at the same time, but now all I smell is the Crystalline fabric softener. Don’t get me wrong, it’s nice fabric softener, I would love if my fabric softener smelled like this (for various reasons we use unscented detergents).

I have tried it, thanks to a lovely NST-er. It has the same elements of the original, but without the fuzzy texture that I love, and is a little shinier, glassier, and flatter. I could easily see someone preferring the new to the old, as I think the old has a bit of funk to it, too.

SotD = Guerlain Champs Elysees EdT.

It’s a bit of hairspray, a bit of nail polish remover, then screechy woods, if that’s a thing. I think the sandalwood in modern fragrances doesn’t work for my nose, it overwhelms the rest of the scent.

Which means nowhere to go but onward and upward from here. Hurray!

SOTD = Chanel No. 19 EDP

I figured I better not rely on Karma anymore for spine stiffening. i had a good call with the person/ team that wanted me to perform a miracle for which I said no and which got escalated to my manager. My manager did not even bother to respond. In any case, crisis averted for now, helped along by retail therapy yesterday. Donatella would be proud:

Chanel No. 22 EDT – where have I been, missing this gorgeous perfume!

Chanel Eau de Cologne – had been on my To Buy list for a while

Hermes Eau de Rhubarbe Ecarlate Shower Gel – so good and refreshing. I don’t normally like red but the bottle color just POPS!

I also got a sample of Penhaligon’s Luna, Prada L’Homme, Prad Infusion d’Iris Almande and a bunch of Hermes samples.

    Other PSA:
Estee Lauder at Macy’s has a really cute GWP with $35 purchase. You get to choose your zipper pull – panda, bee, elephant, monkey or beetle.

Longchamp @ Macys Herald Square and I tend to think in the standalone boutiques – you can drop off your bag to be fixed for free. I am rough on my bags and my tote has a tiny hole in each corner of the bottom of the bag. I asked the SA how best to fix it and she said just bring it in and as long as it is authentic regardless of where you bought it, they will send it in to their factory and you’ll get it back in 4-8 weeks. What is NOT good is now I want to get a Le Pilage Cuir shoulder bag — oy!

That’s great to know about the Longchamp bags. A couple of my oldest ones have been retired in great sorrow due to disintegrating seams.

I was originally going to use duct tape!

Coach used to have a similar warranty but they have since imposed a $25 handling fee. I met someone last year who used to work at Coach and he said that the company switched to cheaper metals that do not last quite as long as the brass ones in the vintage / classic line. I’ve had repairs done to numerous bags and was very disappointed with the last repair as they did a shoddy job and did not notice other metal loops that got scraped paper thin AND the shoulder strap got damaged when it was carelessly folded inside the bag. Anyway, I will bring it back th next time I visit a Coach store.

You know I always got it confused with No.18 which is yuck. I knew I wanted a bottle of Eau de Cologne and then as soon as I smelled 22, I KNEW it was going to be the other bottle within my Retail Therapy budget. When I’m in the mood to decant again, I’ll send you some (email me whenever…I still have to finish mailing the rest of the packages from the last freebiemeet)!

I am sampling Antonio Alesandria Nuit Rouge this morning. I thought I would love it from the note list, but it’s a generic woody musk with a citrus/rhubarb top note on me. However, yesterday’s Dilettante that I thought was just okay turned out to have a gorgeous drydown that lasted until I washed it off this morning. I need some more of it so I can ignore it the first four hours or so and then huff my wrists for the next 20.

    I can’t believe it’s September already.

    SOTD is Diorissimo.

Lily Tomlin role I’m particularly fond of: Debbie Fiderer on The West Wing. (And her Snow White fantasy sequence in Nine to Five is classic.)

Will endeavor (more than usual) to practice at least one random act of kindness today.

    Have an excellent day, NSTers.

I for one will miss summer, although it was too hot and humid in the NE US. Sounds like it will be warm through mid-October, by which time I will be really annoyed and actually ready for winter!

SOTD D600. Yesterday was Misia. Iris is my ‘have to go to the office and be an adult’ note.

Dreary day here in NYC, thought I’d bring some sunshine into it with Diptyque’s Eau des Sens. I’m liking this one more and more.

I will miss summer. I do love the warm days except for the extremely- humid-without-any-breeze-stretch we had in August. That was rough and not enjoyable. But the longer days, easy dress and delicious fruit & vegetables I can’t get enough of.

I’m getting excited about all the new fall scents being announced!
I wish there was a way to buy a sample bag of everything new out there for each season 😉

Late today, ‘cos I went out to the ballet last night, then woke in the early morning to two earthquakes, then back to sleep agsin until 6.30! mean, 6.30! I’m going to work at home, interspersing writing with housework and phone meetings, so I have sprayed Vanilke Galante with liberal insouciance…how I love the way I smell! Yum, yummier, yummiest, all technical expressions in perfume-speak.

Hey, while I’m thinking of it, let me share a little gem from a student assignment:”….so the bestliest solution under the circumstances would be…..” Bestliest! Excellent word! I like the idea of combining it with “somewhat universal” (I’m sure the marketeers wouldn’t mind): ” although the solution is only somewhat universal, it does seem to be the bestliest that can be managed….” A colleague had a conversation with her daughter yesterday, in which the daughter, frighteningly intelligent and the holder of an MSc with first class honours, announced that she had always thought that commas are mainly decorative, so she simply places them where they will be most aesthetically pleasing.

I love life when it’s full of absurdities like these!

Has any tested Burning Rose by Carolina Herrera?

A you tube perfumista was talking it up this summer. She was saying that is beautiful rose scent. I think it’s part of sort of exclusive range that is much priced than her regular line. Anyway, this Perfumista has an amazing perfume collection so when she singles out a particular scent, it gets my attention.

Fate Man by Amouage is my scent today. I’m hoping my daydream of the Corsican shore isn’t too off base – I’ve never been there. I get a lot of immortelle but it’s bone dry – only a hint of dessicated maple syrup, and more of the curry notes. Sun-drenched herbs, rocks, and sand. Bonus, someone at work said I smelled good! That never happens.
I don’t own any perfumes that have flankers so I’m not sure how to participate in tomorrow’s theme…two by the same house?
