Tuesday scent of the day 4/12

Posted by Robin on 12 April 2016 320 Comments

rose

It's Monday's ugly little sister, again. And it's pouring rain, and I'm extra tired — hope everyone else is feeling more chipper than I am! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing Sonoma Scent Studio Vintage Rose. I think this one is discontinued, in which case I'm glad I bought it when I did. I'm on my third cup of Irish Breakfast, and might have to have a little nip of coffee.

Reminder: On 4/15 we're wearing rose for What's in a name, part 1 ("What's in a name? That which we call a rose / By any other name would smell as sweet").

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Love that rose photo. I’m a little tired today too. Just got in the office and downed my first cup of Twinings English Breakfast. Will need many more.
How about that monsoon that’s going on outside right now? Geez….

I’m in Ta’if today. Starting off rose week now. Really like this one.

With you on super tired, Robin. The spring that won’t quite come in the U.S. northeast and mid-Atlantic? Tobacco Rose for me today. I just got 5ml after using smaller samples and I may just need to buy a bottle.

How is the rose in this one? Or is it more amber?

It isn’t an amber at all… The rose to me is somewhat ‘cosmetic’, if that makes sense, although I don’t really have anything similar in my collection to compare it to. Starts off a little more feminine, then switches to masculine. Love it!

I am with you, Robin…not chipper at all, sleep deprived and drove an hour in pouring rain to get to work..

Wearing my own concoction right now that I made for a niece who wanted a “Sweet Rose Oud”…..an essential oil blend of sweet orange, morrocan rose, bourbon vanilla, sandalwood, frankincense and a hefty dosage of agarwood blended in beeswax so that it is a solid perfume.

Once at work I sprayed the air liberally and walked through Dame”s Rose de Mai…which I must say is lovely.

Later I am going to revisit Rose Anonyme…I know it gets a lot of love but the first time I tried it the synthetic oud took over on my skin….I didn’t hate it but I didn’t love it….synthetic ouds are tricky for me which is why I tend to stick with agarwood e.o. But we shall see!

Someone can correct me if I am wrong but I believe that Laurie tweaked Vintage Rose and turned it into Rose Volupte…..(which I think is still in production)…….

Annick Goutal Grand Amour today, which was my first niche perfume ever (if Goutal can still be called niche). I remember telling the SA at Saks that I liked Opium, and he came up with this. Grand Amour and Opium do both have myrrh notes so he wasn’t completely off.

I put Ann Gerard Rose Cut on in the morning, but it seemed a bit sour, so I added some Misia. I’m not sure what exactly I’m smelling now (in the afternoon) on my wrist – I think it’s mostly the drydown of Rose Cut -, but it smells pretty good.

I think there is something in the top notes that simply does not work for me, because I remember this reaction also from the first time I tried this, a long time ago. It’s not really sour sour, possibly just an effect of aldehydes. But now I’ve realised that the rest is really nice :)

I like Perle de Mousse a lot too. There is something in the opening of Rose Cut that that I do not like and I have therefore dismissed it before. But in later stages it’s actually a lovely, sophisticated rose. I believe Victoria liked it as well.

Vintage Rose is one of the greats! When Laurie reformulated it she renamed it (Rose Volupte). The new version is still really good but I think VR was deeper and darker.

    I’m wearing Une Rose Chypree.

When I worked in our downtown office, an officemate had a contraband drip coffee maker and the coffee he made (and which I had an occasional cuppa) was Cafe Bustela. That drip coffee maker died and someone brought in a Keurig. The WORST k-cup EVER EVER EVER was one flavored with … blueberry. I thought I was going to walk around with a nuclear glow after having that one sip. Surprisingly, one of my co-workers actually loved it. Eeeeek!!!

Participating in rose week in a rather oblique manner since I don’t really like rose. At least not as the star of the show, I should clarify. I have discovered that I must like it in a supportive role since I was rather surprised to see that my SOTD includes nor one, but TWO types of rose.

SOTD is MFK Cologne pour le Soir with both Bulgarian and Iranian rose, per LuckyScent website. Color me surprised! I had no clue until 5 minutes ago.

Oh, see, I didn’t even know that! I rarely look at notes and just purchase or sample based on my emotional reaction at first sniff, unless it’s a blind buy, like Queen. But, when I DO investigate current bottles/samples, I am surprised to see how many times certain notes pop up. So apparently I have an affinity for certain ingredients. I should probably be more cognizant and scientific in my approach to perfumes. Thanks for your input ????

Nah…I like your approach much better…sometimes I end up with bottles because I assume I should ‘love’ something based on the notes and I subconsciously tell myself I do…but emotional reaction is probably the better way to go :)

In regards to your comment below, I have made a conscious effort to enjoy and appreciate even the most insignificant things in an effort not to be old, jaded, cynical, bitter, and antisocial. In that same vein, when I go Panera for a salad with bread on the side, they always ask “Would you like a .99 cent pastry to go with that?” Hell YEAH, I would like a .99 cent pastry! BUT I have chosen to consider my side of bread my desert. And I am very grateful for that bread and thoroughly enjoy it.

This behavior is also know as playing mind games with yourself ????

Really it is too bad her line disappeared. I guess it didn’t sell, and it might actually be the kiss of death for a celebrity line if perfumistas like the product — that probably means it wasn’t clean enough for the target market.

        No. 19
        1000 (Patou)
        4711
By Night White (Profumi del Forte)
        Colonia (Acqua di Parma)
        Eau de Soir (Sisley)
        Heritage (Guerlain)

AP was an early love for me, but I haven’t worn it in years, mostly because I found it too big. Ducking while confessing to throwing out my very old partially full bottle yesterday while packing. I suppose I could have freebied it, but I was in a tossing kinda mood.

Woke up dizzy and utterly exhausted, so at home today and probably will be in bed/on the couch for the rest of the day. At first I thought it was my meds for my (subclinical) thyroid condition, but Doc tells me that no, it’s just plain old over exertion ( I did overdo the biking during the sunny stretch we had last week) and mild dehydration, so plenty of rest and tea it is!

SOTD: Tulsi rose tea and Mario Badescu Rose Facial spray.

I’ve been having that utterly-exhausted-for-no-discernible-reason thing too, and my mother keeps saying, “Go have your thyroid tested. And not by your GP! Make your GP send you to the endocrinologist!” Thyroid issues run in the family – not just my mom but all three of my dad’s sisters have been on Synthroid for decades now. (They’re all in their late 60s to mid-70s.)

Apparently my mother went undiagnosed for years because her GP’s tests only looked at her overall thyroid level (TSH? T4? I can’t remember). My brother was having problems with his liver function, and his doctor wanted to rule out a genetic problem possibility, so both my parents got sent to the endocrinologist. As it turned out, Mom’s thyroid *level* was normal, but her other readings were way out of whack.

Exactly right- the human body needs to convert T4 to T3 in order for it to be useful on a cellular level and a screening TSH doesn’t not evaluate if this conversion occurs. Some folks, for a variety of reasons will never convert, or not convert enough, to maintain homeostasis, and do much better with T3 supplementation. A thorough work up should be done if you suffer those symptoms but screening labs are normal. Not giving medical advice, but encouraging people to be proactive regarding their health ????

        Hey there!

Thanks so much! And do go ahead and get checked out. For me it’s a combo of funky thyroid issues, other hormone issues and not getting enough rest. The good thing is that I do exercise and eat right (vegetables and beans being the center of my diet) so if I take my meds and get the rest I need I do rebound quickly.

Anyway look: the name alone is great fun and the juice will tingle the memories of anyone who grew up with or near hay or the cleaner types of livestock. I’m glad I tried it and I might longlist it, but as a bottled memory or experience rather than as a perfume. :^)

My breathing’s been irritated lately, no doubt a result of the yellow dust blanket (aka pollen) here. Every spring I lose my ability to sing – like my vocal cords lose elasticity – and panic that it’s a permanent loss due to age, only to have it reappear mid-summer.

Anyway, holding off on scent today. Maybe later.

I’m telling myself the rain will wash away more pollen, and bribing myself to activity with shopping and/or lunch out. Also, a downpayment on the rest of the week’s (predicted) nice weather. Stay positive, folks.

Hang in there. I understand the panic you mention. A few years ago, noticed my voice leaving by the end of a work day. Tests revealed one vocal chord is ~80% paralyzed. No answers for why but I notice it gets worse during allergy season and winter, better in the summer. Attending social functions in a restaurant or any crowded location is so not fun when no one can hear you as you try to make conversation. Elevating your voice is simply not possible (my kids sort of love that though!). Google deep-dives reveal some promising therapies on the horizon so, indeed, stay positive! : )

I wasn’t feeling chipper today either, and rose felt too vibrant, so I started out with Rose Jam bath products but topped it off bunch of Jasmin et Cigarette. Somehow J&C feels like it references both annoyance with the everyday, and simultaneously, distant carefree memories. Fiance surprised me with a bottle on Sunday, which was truly an amazing and thoughtful gift. Everything about the experience of wearing this scent right now is emotionally overwhelming and moving, as if it somehow captured my exact state of being.

I’ll bring it full circle by brewing a cup of Brambleberry Rose tea. Rose and jasmine belong together, after all.

Yep, it’s still cold out and eagerly waiting for it to get and stay warm. I was thinking Une Rose Vermeille today but just too cold and too much raspberry to be a great fit today. Tomorrow it will probably be a good fit. So it’s Amouage Epic today.

    Robin,
I am like you this morning……so tired. Was just thinking about doing some kind of cleanse to see if that would help with my energy level.
My SOTD is Rose de Grasse by Aerin Lauder. I have drained the remainder of my bottle of this. I like this soooo much better than the Red Roses by JM that I wore yesterday. I received this bottle compliments of NST through one of the drawings. It is a beautiful scent, but the price tag is a bit pricey. I hate that it is all gone:(
Really enjoying the challenge this week. I was scouring through my samples last night trying to find fragrances for the rest of the week.
Hope everyone has a great day!

Rainy here and fits my mood fueled by 3.5 hours sleep. There’s a sort of glam to pulling all-nighters when you’re a 19 year old in college. Not so much when you’re a 41 y.o. in college. So today, I’m in Diesel Fuel for Life. Some days, you just need some simple sugar and cleaned-up patchouli.

Really enjoying the idea of Rose week and seeing what everyone is wearing. Yesterday I wore Une Rose (FM), love how it takes you on a rose journey. Today it’s 4160Tuesdays Raw Silk and Red Roses, just glorious.

Tomorrow I may go a little more diaphanous with Elie Saab Rose Couture.

Hmm, might need to try this. I like the idea of sand and salty amber, but citrus can be problematic on my skin. Although warm tones would suit me better than cool. Which corner of Barcelona is it meant to evoke – if any?

Ostara is now on sale in the actual Penhaligon stores after having been on sale online. It looks like the end which is so strange to me. It seems like the real winner of their line up so ending it is confusing.

    Rainy here, too! Yuck!

    SOTD = Amouage Jubilation XXV

I was going to wear a rose-centric (or if I want to be chi-chi, “rose-forward”) perfume but reached for Jub XXV instead. It has rose as a note albeit not prominent because it has everything AND the kitchen sink! I have a large decant which will last me forever. I did not want to gas myself or those within 100 feet of me so only used barely 3 sprays. It quietesdown considerably 2 hours after application and had pretty much disappeared 5 hours later.

I had a chance early this morning to put on a bit of TDC Rose Poivree. The peppery civet rose is daring. It was Fresh Cream lotion, though, after the shower. Someday I will wear RP with people.

I do smell a little tuberose now. I repeat…I am getting some tuberose now. ;)

I think yellow florals and I don’t get along perhaps…maybe that means ylang ylang and I are not friends specifically? not sure I know what ylang ylang smells like on its own but there is something in Ostara and in Lace Garden that does not please my nose and it may be the culprit.

Alahine has a hefty dose of ylang to my nose. I find it more of an ylang scent than an amber so if you liked Alahine, maybe it’s not the culprit? Although floral notes can smell very different in different compositions.

Perhaps it is not ylang then. I would define it as pond water-esque if pressed. ;) Like flowers drifting towards decay.
I smell it in Ostara too. I did not smell Lace Garden and Ostara side by side though so my mind/nose may be overgeneralizing.

I’ve tried Oha and Alahine and liked them both.

In general the line seems like a return to another era in perfumery…some might say old-fashioned ;) but I think it has the feel of fragrances which came out in the 60s, 70s and 80s.

I am finding the line quite refreshing compared to the pink pepper, watered down patchouli, sugar bombs (often celebrity-licensed brands) you find at major department stores today. I do appreciate some of said sugar bombs but this line feels like a little time travel back to a more opulent time in fragrance and I am enjoying the journey.

I have the same feelings as you about the line, and about flower pink sugar bombs being released as well.
Keep us (or me) posted on your sampling so we can discuss!

Oha, for a chypre, is very well done in my opinion.

After my shower today, and Lyric seemed to die down, I put on Alahine.

Yes, I liked Oha quite a bit…reminds me of something my aunt wore in the 70s/80s. I like chypres in general.

Both Oha and Alahine were interesting to me throughout the day and kept my mind active. I didn’t find Lace Garden as interesting to my nose and mind today.

I don’t know what I would do without perfume to sniff thoughout the day…makes me happy and keeps me engaged when often times at work I want to check out…mentally if not physically. It also makes me wonder what people who are not into perfume are doing w/ their senses of smell all day if that makes sense. I’m constantly sniffing and assessing. ;)

I don’t know what I’m wearing today. Just before I left the house I grabbed a rollerball, saw Annick Goutal on it, and rolled it lavishly (or as lavish as you can be with a rollerball). I couldn’t see the name of the perfume anywhere. At this point, mid-day, there isn’t much left to identify it. I thought I smelled pretty good this morning, though.

Rose week prompted me to dig out my sample of OJ Ta’if. I’m always wondering if I should have bought Ta’if instead of Champaca. I think I can stop fretting. Ta’if would be very interesting to me if the structure of the top notes persisted and if it weren’t drowned out by high tension line hum of too much Iso E Super. Of course, too much Iso E Super for me might be just right for you. ;)

I retried PHI this morning, and I still get a lot of rose out of it. But it was a mistake to try something new and heavier before my workout, because by the time I was in the height of my workout and I needed air, I felt like I was drowning in a vat of thick resiny patchouli amber stuff that actually smelled a lot like what I remember Shalimar smelling like. It might have smelled good, but I’m afraid I’ve ruined it by experience now!

I’m in Tocade. I was going to take advantage of today’s lower temperature and wear a dab of Nahema or Rose de Nuit, but I’m way too congested to justify taking any from my vials, which I found are running dangerously low. So Tocade.

Lots of frustrating and expensive but not tragic problems to solve today…. grrrrrrrrr… in Lyric because I forgot I was going to wear Mohur… The spicy resiny Lyric is working just fine. I think of this as a rose scent, but I wonder if that is just the power of suggestion. If it was marketed as a cinnamony ylang-ylang and geranium scent, I’d categorize it that way…

Decided to copycat and try out my (gifted) sample of vintage rose (from 2012, according to the vial). It’s complex and intriguing to this non-rose lover.
QUESTION: I am considering getting the Histoires de Parfums sampler (19$ + 10% off today), is it worth it? The ELDO was certainly worth the 14$, does this compare?

I think it’s a HdP is a house with good quality scents. Those that I tried last all day on my skin but I only tested a few of their offerings. It really just comes down to personal taste IMHO.

I’m wearing Queen’s sister Queen of Hearts today. I like it. It’s a bit on the sweet side, but not excessively so (ymmv, of course). It seems like it was fairly sweet through the middle of its development but seems to be getting a bit drier and incensier as it dries down. It’d describe it as a spicy, slightly fruity amber. It’s kind of reminding me of something else (maybe more than one something else), but I can’t put my finger on what exactly. The amber/patchouli is kind of reminding me of Reem Acra a bit (but without the orange blossom), but occasionally it kind of makes me think of SL Cedre a bit (sans tuberose), but there is a plummy note that makes me think of several other perfumes, like Feminite du Bois, Agent Provocateur L’Agent and TF Plum Japonaise.

I think it would layer really nicely with a leather.

Hey, thanks for the info! I have been keeping my eyes peeled for this one since I enjoyed Queen so much. The “plummy note” is calling my name. I may just order from Amazon- I think it’s $10 and free shipping. The incense in the dry down appeals to me as well. Hmmm….is Donatella looking? ????

Morning, all. There’s something going on all over the world–I too am knackered, strung out and just plain exhausted. Unlike the rest of you, though, I have no particular reason to be so tired. I’m just getting old, I guess. Anyhow, I chose Lyric today: plenty enough rose for the week’s project, and it gives me something to live up to. If I didn’t wear it, or something of its ilk, I suspect I would slob around all day doing very little rather slowly. As it is, I’m wrapped in lyric’s complicated embrace, and the scent of rose and incense is drifting on the air all around me, so I’m mindful of my posture and gait and that I need to Make An Effort and Rise To The Occasion, etc, etc. I’d prefer to put my delicious-smelling self into clean jim jams and go back to bed, though!

Put on a bit of Balenciaga L’eau Rose this morning that I had from a sample, thinking it was a rose fragrance. Had to look at the review to find out that it is actually more of a violet. Pretty pleasant, one of the only violets that I think I might like to own. Very hard to find now–must have been discontinued. Oh, well.

On another note, does anyone know if spraying perfume in a flower bed will keep a dog from digging in it? We have some new rose beds and one of our dogs has been digging, which has my husband fit to be tied. I wouldn’t mind using some unloved frags there if I thought it would help. Any ideas?

Try Demeter Zombie Dog … It might scare away the dog. But seriously…when my dogs start digging up the lawn I fill the hole with their dog poo and it stops them. So you could lightly bury some around the roses and see if that works. Unpleasant but effective.

I do not own any rose soliflores but Tea Rose. Many fragrances I love have a prominent rose note. Tocade, EL Knowing, Aromatic Elixirs, to name a few. Today it is rainy and chilly so the first CDG for me layered with Tea Rose equals clove infused, spicy rose.

I’m not doing rose week. SOTD is Iris Nazarena. Yesterday I wrote in discussion with Jenkr that I don’t find it carroty at all. And today, the moment I sprayed – yep, it’s there, carrots. It lasted just a few seconds, probably evaporating with the alcohol. Why haven’t I detected it before? It might be that I noticed it today because I was looking for it, or it is the weather that has brought the carroty aspect forward. Anyway, another trick of perfume perception.
And I’m in trouble, because I really love this perfume. Naturally, I cannot afford a bottle, and I don’t *need* it, but I don’t want to get a decant. Because this darned bottle is just as gorgeous as the scent!

Hi, Kanuka. Not yet anywhere near hat and gloves weather up here, but for sure, autumn is advancing towards winter in one of those incomprehensible five-steps-forward, circle, curtsey, three-steps-back dances. Progress is slow, but perceptible, in other words. Good. I’m finished with summer. I’m going to Whanganui on Friday, and I’m looking forward to the difference in temperature as we head south. It feels as though leaving the city will be good for my soul. I think all the deciduous trees along the Parapara will have coloured up, and that will be pretty to see. I want to take warm, friendly, uplifting perfumes with me (visiting the mother-in-law), but right now I’m too tired to think if them. Something will suggest itself on the day…

Hi Florence! It sounds like you have been so busy with work this term. Goodness me, Melbourne must seem like a dream island that you can hold onto, and visualise as getting closer every day. I hope Whanganui goes well. One of my best friends has just moved there (the artist with perfume eyes bigger than her belly) so I keep planning a trip north, taking in the Len Lye gallery in NP. I’ve been enjoying Ys.Uzac Lale. It’s a soapy lemon and very calming with a glint of yellow light. It’s kind of breezy, too but restful and requires little effort. I am wearing my hat indoors! Student habits die hard.

I didn’t realize we were doing roses all week, but I fit in anyway. I wore Rosa Alba today; I got this in a swap some time back but have never worn it much.

I am feeling quite tired myself. The plumbers got finished today with the repairs on our sewer. It had backed up three times in the last five months, so we had to bite the bullet and get two sections replaced where the tree roots had gotten into it. After all the $$$$ I just spent, it had better work for a long time to come!
