Monday scent of the day 3/14

Posted by Robin on 14 March 2016 352 Comments

giv-pi-detail-s

Happy Pi Day! And it's also Albert Einstein's birthday. What fragrance are you wearing to celebrate?

I had a dickens of a time finding it, but I'm wearing a dab of very old Givenchy Pi.

Reminder: 3/18 will be I Hate...Oh Wait. Wear a perfume you love that features a note or style you always thought you hated. (suggested by pixel)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

SOTD is Gueriain Apres Onde…nothing to do with PI or Albert Einstein, but it is a rainy dreary day.

It’s not really powdery, no; the drydown reminds me of Divine L’Inspiritrice (I swear both of these have like a cherry sno-cone note)

Dang. I should have dragged out my also very old bottle of Pi (I bought it when it was launched). They used to have this amazing dehydrated shower gel that was sold as a 3-pack of flat plastic-and-foil envelopes with a screw cap and a rope hanger: you’d fill one with warm water, squish it around to dissolve the crystals, and voila: shower gel. So modern! It fit so perfectly with that futuristic theme.

Sample week, as in “I’m trying to burn through all these seeming hundreds of samples I bought over the years”, so I’m in Tom Daxon Crushed Bloom, which is basically just rose and LOTV over a musky base. Nice enough, I guess? Nothing out of the ordinary.

Woke up early this morning (well that is everyday with this baby buddha) to a dreary gray wet day.
I still sampling Teo Cabanel. I am in Lace Garden today.
I can appreciate the beauty of this but its way to floral for my taste. The dry down is the best part.
I sampled Alahine over the weekend. At first, I didn’t understand what the hype was. The more I wore it the more I loved it.

Tea today is Paris breakfast, a black tea with citrus notes and I am still in my pj’s

I’m at the stage (cluster feeding!) where I can’t say I got up early because I haven’t really gone to sleep, except for an hour here and there. :-/

Lace Garden is one I’ve been wanting to try. Seems like a great pick for spring!

Welcome back! I have been waiting for you to post something about the baby! Congrats! I am so so happy for you. Welcome to motherhood-treat yourself well.
Cluster feeding only happens to me around 4pm.
Hang in there DottieNC-it gets better.

Lace Garden is great for spring, doesn’t really work for me. Would you like it? I would be happy to mail it to you as a “welcome to motherhood” gift.

A little Pi humor for a Monday morning:

If you ask a scientist what pi equals he’ll tell you it equals 3.14159. If you ask a mathematician what pi equals and he’ll tell you pi equals the circumference of a circle divided by its diameter. If you ask an Engineer what pi equals he’ll say “Pi? Well, it’s about 3, but we’ll call it 4 just to be safe.”
…And if you ask a kid what pi is, he’ll ask if he can have ice cream with it!

Note: Engineers tend to be cautious and overestimate to be on the safe side. 🙂

    SOTD: 212 Sexy. Good stuff!!!

Europeans seem to pronounce Pi as “pee”. Not a big fan of the women’s scents although I have developed an appreciation for some of them over time. The men’s Givenchy fragrances are, however, very well-done. While not my cup of tea, Organza Indecence is a splendid, spicy, sexy juice.

I got some samples over the weekend and I’m in Aedes de Venustas today. It’s…. very different from what I thought it would be. The opening was very funky, but it quickly turned into something really nice. I haven’t quite been able to formulate all my thoughts on it but I think that opening fits the theme perfectly. For a second I was afraid I’d have to scrub it off, but now I think I like it. I’m not sure what note(s) caused such a reaction though.

Curious to know whether you’re in the Aedes signature from their line, or the one L’Artisan made for Aedes? (I like the former, but recently I’ve completely fallen for the latter.)

Yes, I did read that they were vastly different, but I am looking forward to trying the other as well.
I was a bit put off by the rhubarb when I first smelled it this morning. It had that very sour-grapefruity note and I was really afraid it would turn funky on me, but it ended up smelling really nice!

I am wearing a tiny drop of Tzigane by Corday which is a long discontinued carnation chypre. The top notes are funky in that nail polish remover way, but after ten minutes or so it is humming along nicely.

I am drinking Harney’s English Breakfast from a sample. It tastes like mostly Keemun.

As the ad once said, “Available only in Canada…pity!” For the English, that is. Canadian Breakfast by Red Rose is a relatively recent innovation, I suppose to keep up with the Irish and English Breakfast teas. We Canadians, being more closely tied to England than Americans, prefer our tea to have character and depth, unlike the “maiden’s waters” of brands whose names I will not mention. We also would not dream of hanging a string with label off our tea cups!

          • Robin says:
            14 March 2016 at 5:49 pm

Gotcha. I think “American Breakfast” is generally speaking coffee — there really isn’t any tea tradition here other than iced tea.

Last night I wrote down my 5 violets to plan ahead. Today I was supposed to begin with a different one but couldn’t help myself and began with my very favorite (Jolie Madame). Now I will have to see if I can actually wear 5 different one’s and not wear Jolie Madame at least twice! I do have 5 that I genuinely like, though.

I could easily join you in a violet week, but instead I prefer to pick one violet scent for each month to savor. I’ll be looking forward to seeing your choices!

I also have the Atelier sample set, have had them for two years or so, and I have tried less than half of the fragrances. It may be because they just don’t last on my skin. I don’t think that I’ve tried either Santal Carmin or Trefle Pur. I think one of those would work for tomorrow.

SOTD is Azemour from KVA’s split. I’m fortifying myself for some challenges today and this fragrance with the bright citrus opening and so much loveliness in the drydown will help. No one will mess with me! A perfect homage fragrance to the brilliant Albert Einstein.

I’m wearing Chanel 1932 today, and drinking some iced green tea.

We had to bring our dog to the vet early this morning. He’s having some health problems. On Thursday he went in for his annual checkup, and his liver values were very high. We brought him in again on Friday to have an ultrasound done, and his liver is full of tumours. So, we brought him in this morning to vet, where they will do a biopsy on him. My daughter is heartbroken. He is the family dog, but from the time we got him, those two have had a bond with each other.

I’m hoping for some good news today.

You’d never know he was so sick by the way he is acting. He was running in the backyard earlier. And, his appetite is healthy.

I was low on sunscreen and bought the best I could find at the grocery store. Sadly, the Beautypedia review didn’t mention the overpowering fake pineapple scent 🙁 I’m doing my best to run with it by wearing a hefty dose of Isis, but I fear the sunscreen is winning. I’m pretty sure now that I had this same sunscreen in different packaging a couple of years ago when a stranger complained about my awful fruity lotion. It does smell like a B&BW failure. Oh well, at least I’m the only one suffering this time.
Hope everybody had a nice weekend! It was my in-laws annual St. Pats party so I missed out on NST but will go read the comments when I get a minute.

Hello, I’m back! My beautiful baby girl was born three weeks ago today. Everything about childbirth and newborn life has been more intense than I ever imagined. I’m so in love and so sleep deprived. :-p

For some reason I’ve been wearing only Mohur since I got home from the hospital. My SOTD today is the lovely Mohur Extrait, which I finally got my paws on through the splitmeet (thanks, clarissa!).

It’s a bummer of a gray, drizzly day, following a challenging weekend. I couldn’t find the scent I wanted this morning either, so I’m not off to a great start. However, I’m wearing Cuir d’Ange, of which I got two(!) extremely generous samples from Hermes over the weekend, and though I started off feeling it was nice-but-nothing-to-obsess-over, I now find myself obsessing over it. Perfectly soft and leathery, alternating with a floral soapiness and…ambrette? Really lovely.

I’m wearing a very un-Pi-like fragrance – En Passant. I’ve unilaterally decided that it’s spring and I’m therefore wearing head-to-toe pastels today; hence also the choice of scent. Spring isn’t fully cooperating: it’s beautifully sunny, but chilly here. Everybody else is still wearing black and grey, so I look bright and cheerful or bright and positively deranged, depending on your outlook, against that dark background.

My thinking exactly. Zara has done a midi lace dress for this spring that could have been painted by Monet, had he only pastels in his palette. I’m aware that there’ll be about 7 million other people wearing the same dress this spring, but I don’t really care, it is really beautiful.

Bright and cheerful is always better than Greek grandmother in mourning! My apologies to Greek grandmothers, and grandmothers in general, and those who take a traditional approach to mourning, but really unless there is a necessary reason to wear black, bright and cheerful is always better than cold neutrals… 🙂

I do like black as well and love the mafia funeral look for summer – all black, huge sunglasses, scarf, bare shoulders, tight pencil skirt, heels. But there comes a point every year when I’m physically incapable of wearing black and that time is now here.

I’m forced to wear black at work. I call it “Sicilian widow”. It doesn’t suit me, makes me look haggard, and I feel unhappy in it. I’ve always said that I will only wear black in my coffin. I live my life in living colour!

I can be the laziest of dressers on days when I don’t have that enthusiasm. This is why I’ve now realized (after years of scorn towards the category) that it really pays to have decent basics – perfectly fitting jeans, cashmere sweaters, good-looking flats. Because it is a fact that when I’m tired and cannot be bothered, jeans and a sweater are what I’ll wear, no matter my original intentions. Considering that on days like these I’ll be wearing no make-up and look generally forlorn anyway, at least if the comfy clothes are good quality, I’ll not be escorted from the premises of the Commission.

I agree 100% with this and I’m in the process of actually building that good basics collection now. We can be super casual in the office anyway, but I’ve found that even if I’m feeling blah I certainly don’t need to look it.

The whole picture sounds lovely and hopeful. It reminds of that effect used in some films where it’s all black and white except for one dash of color somewhere. It’s black and white here today, and I conformed to wearing black and grey. It’s all a bit dreary.

Cloon Keen Atelier “Castaña” for me today. This vetiver and chestnut concoction is a bit light for my tastes, although I know on some other people it’s too heavy. Whilst my Vetiver Tonka is different to this, they sort of occupy the same ecological niche and the Hermès has the edge. :^)

I’m wearing a generous dose of my semi-vintage Parfum Sacree EDP, augmented by a few drops of the very vintage Parfum Sacree Parfum and I think I smell great and no one else has remarked upon it, so I didn’t overdo it.
I now have my collection on a 28 day rotation and it is working great. The 28 is main notes, with two or three candidates in each category, so on any given day , I only have a few choices (reduces waffling), but I still feel like I am making the rounds and using my collection liberally. Also helps focus the “what shall I buy next?” by clarifying what I will need to refill next…

SOTD is Opium Fleur De Shanghai. It is really lovely. When Opium came out, I thought I didn’t like it, so I never tried it again. I like this very much, not at all heavy, although it may be in the heat. It’s cold and rainy today, so it’s cheering me up. I looked on Amazon to see what it would cost, OMG it’s $300. Don’t like it that much.

In Miami for a few days so mostly wearing Eau de Sunscreen, but did some perfume shopping yesterday and bought Coromandel and Mojave Ghost. The latter has very mixed reviews, but I liked it as a somewhat inconspicuous, dry with a little twist of something perfume – and the SA was extremely winning. He did not talk me into the beautiful Memo Inle Iris though. I realized I do have a line in the perfume sand and this, at 550 or 600, is past it. It smells amazing though for all you profligate iris lovers out there!

SOTD = Chanel Coromandel which is perfect with the cold rain of today (and most of the weekend).

Still in the midst of organizing my samples in the hopes that I will be able to try all of them before next year. I was told that my goal is reasonable since there are only about a hundred or so. 😉 I left out a few that I’m curious about, so I’ll be sampling this week!

I’m wearing Azemour today, with a soft green jumper & red quilted floral jacket, and a lovely big , light weight wool Liberty scarf, that I got for £1 at a charity coffee & cakes morning on Saturday!, this was definitely my best bargain in quite awhile, it’s a really beautiful print, and I actually bid for this one on eBay a few months back, but the bidding went too high. I’m feeling very pleased with myself, as I have a real weakness for scarves, and Liberty prints, and this one was calling to me from across the room!
At the end all the bric a brac was reduced to 20p, and I came home with lots of other junk too. The selection of homemade cakes was really good as well.

No perfume, but I’m drinking a lovely jasmine and orange green tea, a gift from my MIL. If I was going to wear something today, it would be Ostara. My daffodils started blooming over the weekend, my favorite flower, and the opening of Ostara captures it PERFECTLY.

I blindly ordered a bottle of Ostara last week. It was just too good of a deal to pass up. The daffodil is my mom’s favorite flower and I figured I should definitely have it in my collection. I’ve never noticed much of a scent though. Perhaps I need a whole garden of them? 🙂

It is! I adore it; it makes me think of gelato. Creamy + citrus + tonka (nothing particularly calls to mind chocolate!). I do find the color a bit off-putting when it’s on my skin, but someone with more melanin (most of the world) probably wouldn’t care. I think the scent was a bit more piquant in the cold weather, when last I tried it, but I like the gelato-y experience quite well enough.

SOTD: Rainy dreary Monday- dark and wet. Did not want to leave my bed!
To cheer up, a mishmash: Showered with a bit of Flying Fox (RIP) gel followed by a couple of spritzes of Sycamore. Perfect.
OOTD: Blue slim trousers, white shirt, navy blue scarf, cream cardigan with a cherry blossom printed obi belt. I made the obi belt from a couple of old, heavy satin scarves and have not worn this in YEARS!

Well, Harrods is famous for its perfume hall, and as an outsider you can pretend not to know its reputation for nouveau riche vulgarity and just enjoy the bling and the outrageous prices. Liberty has a decent selection in a beautiful Arts and Crafts building in the centre of town. Personally I like Blooms because they have a bunch of different stuff but they won’t have the traditional big names like Chanel/ Guerlain/ Hermès.

Absolutely agree with the other suggestions and would add Fortnum and Mason which has a beautiful perfume hall, and is near Santa Maria Novella, the Malle boutique, Roja Dova and others in the Burlington arcade. Also Les Senteurs is brilliant and last time I was at the Seymour Place branch had a really helpful assistant. Enjoy London!

I’m wearing Christopher Brosius’ Where We Are There Is No Here, an ethereal jasmine sandalwood musk that’s more sensed than smelled. A bit ghostlike. Like Pi it’s impossible to pin down a finite definition, but it’s definitely there. It makes me feel as if I’m floating through a gently scented mist on this gray day.

I refer to this one as “Where We Are There Is No Perfume” since the scent escapes me in a flash. I do adore the jasmine open on this one, I just wish it lasted longer than one sniff. I actually contacted them to plead for a perfume of just those opening jasmine notes, but they were unswayed.

Met up with a band of Bay Area fume heads on Sat (thanks Robin et al for the meet-up feature!) that culminated with a giant pile of samples we were each trying to offload. I pulled a couple of Parfums de Nicolai from it. Yesterday I tested New York Intense (really liked this one) and today began in Amber Oud (nice, but no need to lock up my wallet).

After we parted, I took advantage of the schmancy mall and stopped in at Cartier. Has anyone tried their ouds? I feel about oud the way I feel about many notes–it depends on the perfume… but the Cartier ouds were really fun. I’m not sure I exactly recommend Oud Radieux–it is extremely potent stuff–but it is a good ride. If you like ginger. Spicy ginger. Hot spicy ginger and oud. Definitely try Oud Radieux if that sounds intriguing.

How would you compare the spiciness with that of NVC Trayee? That’s my spice tolerance.

Errrr… think Ting Ting Jahe ginger candy…Oud Radieux might be one you should skip… or at least test on paper only (but DO NOT put it in your purse with other paper tests as it goes nuclear and destroys all other scent samples within minutes).

SOTD is Bulgari Omnia (the original). I tend to save the few drops I have of this, but I was going through my samples this weekend thinking of the swapmeet, and I found quite a few decants that had evaporated, which inspired me to just wear them, no matter the fact that I might not be able to get any more.

Ha ha ha! I’m famous! It’s “me” day on Friday! …now if I could only remember what note I was talking about with ‘I hate… oh wait’. Snort. Guess I get to play along with the rest of you. So I’m going to guess ‘rose’, in honor of which I’m currently wearing By Kilian Liaisons Dangereuses aka Rose J’Adore. Which, sadly, is not really working for me today, that’s a pity; Mondays are bad enough, time-shifted Monday is even worse, and time-shifted-Monday-with-the-wrong-perfume is just unkind on a cosmic scale. On the plus side I didn’t have to report for jury duty today; so it’s not as bad a Monday as could have been.

Oh geez, if you had jury duty on top of that it would’ve been an epic form of unkindness on a cosmic scale! Universal unkindness!

I can totally see how rose would be the sort of note for some. I think it depends on what kind of rose in some ways. Grapefruit is definitely the note with me. Although rhubarb may be added to that list.

I’m wearing Cuir d’Ange for the second day in a row. I think I may need a 15ml of this one too. I like it a lot. I get decent lasting power from it (mostly as a skin scent, but it’s still there), and I get a slight touch of cuminy funk that I haven’t really seen mentioned elsewhere. Maybe that’s just how the leather note is reading to me.

Happy Monday, everyone! This should be a joyous day for me because it is the first day of my Spring Break. It didn’t start out that way. I was supposed to have dental surgery today, but my appointment and surgery procedures got so messed up. Someone seriously dropped the ball on this one. So, after everyone in the office continued to apologize, it all had to be rescheduled for Friday. What a way to o start and end my Spring Break week.
My SOTD is Satura Cherry Blossom by Jo Malone. It seems appropriate for a Spring Break fragrance.

do give it a chance! It wasn’t love at first sniff for me, more an acquired taste, e.g. like smoky-peaty whisky. And yes, I find that if you buy a FB of one of the exclusifs the SAs should automatically offer samples of the others, but that’s in some kind of parallel universe to mine

Adding some sunshine to Keep-It-Simple Monday with L’Occitane Feuilles d’Oranger (Orange Leaves). Someone wore it last week and that prompted me to pull it out today. It’s an entire orange, including peel, leaves, stems and twigs, crushed and put into a bottle. The edc layered over the spray body milk creates a light but long-lastng scent with a brisk, tart and aromatic note that brightens up the day, despite the rainy weather forecast for the week.

I wore Feuilles d’oranges recently, I broke my bottle and a friend found it on the bay and sent it to me as a surprise gift. I adore this. The other perfume by L’occitane I own is La Vanilla. Feuilles is by far my favorite though. You smell great! How is the body milk? I am jealous you own it! 🙂

The body milk, called Lait d’Oranger, comes in a spray bottle and, although milky in color, is a very thin liquid, much more like a body spray, and you just mist it on. But it softly moisturizes and the scent is quite strong and long-lasting. It smells the same as the edc. I picked up two when they were clearanced out. I also enjoy wearing it under my favorite fragrance of this type, Nina Ricci Bigarade, which was only produced a couple of years in the mid-1970’s.

I feel certain that Einstein would have liked a good dirty jasmine on the women around him, so I’m wearing Tawaf and planning on quiche for dinner (that’s the pie). It also smells like Salome in the house because the bottle arrived and I’ve been decanting for the participants in the splitmeet. So it’s jasmine/rose/funky in here, the poor cat is sneezing, and it’s bucketing rain outside but I am strangely happy with everything.

So, the last week I’ve been thinking about perfume as story telling, and looking at the story tellers (I would say Jean Claude Ellena and Serge Lutens are two good examples). I guess I’m interested in this in relationship to my own work, and how my scent mapping is really just a form of story telling. I have been going back over John Berger’s essays on art – as these always offer insights into how we ‘see’ and make sense of the world (though I’m more interested in the sense of smell than sight) . I think I’m far more taken by the story telling aspect of perfume than say the symbolic aspect, or the (more modern) curating/cataloguing (scent library) aspect. It’s separating story telling from romanticism and metaphor that is one problem. Anyway, I’m off to smell sperm whale oil this week. Just had an amzing walk in the mist and rain through pine sheltered fern. Wearing Blackbird and New Musk , together, as I like the way the musk softens the pine.

Woke up this morning thinking of Ostara. I am not one to argue with Morpheus, so I spritzed liberally and walked about in a yellowy-floral cloud of springtime.

Coincidentally, I watched Mrs. Palfrey at the Claremont this afternoon. I enjoyed the movie’s reference to Wordsworth and his poetry:

    “I wander’d lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o’er vales and hills
When all at once I saw a crowd,
    A host, of golden daffodils”

Someone told me a nap is a good antidote to the spring forward shenanigans, so I gave it a try this afternoon.

    Like. +1. Agree. 🙂
