Happy Tuesday! If you have a spare moment, do tell us your fragrance of the day.
I'm wearing Van Cleef & Arpels Bois d'Iris.
Reminder: this Friday will be Cheap Thrill Friday...as we head into the holiday spending period, wear a fragrance that would not break the bank even in a full size. (suggested by Bardot)
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
Note: image via Van Cleef & Arpels at Facebook ... "Les Fleurs Enchantées - Blooming Creativity “Fragrance of Happiness” for Van Cleef & Arpels by Ming Kiang Tan, crafted by Caterina Crepax. The flower has a power which dwells within a fragrance that burst forth the scent of extraordinary happiness and enchantment, the feeling that one’s received in front of a Van Cleef & Arpels jewel piece.”
I’m wearing Shalimar Ode a la Vanille, which has become a go-to no matter the mood or weather or occasion.
Scent twins!
Yay Shalimar!
Scent of the day is Shalimar Ode a la Vanille-
It’s a rainy day here but the temperatures are still decent for November.
Pairing my perfume with the holiday Rose lipstick from Guerlain.
Caron’s L’Impacte de Pour un Homme. Soft lavender vanilla.
I’m going to struggle on Friday. My fragrances tend to belong in the rather expensive but bought on ebay category, or rather expensive and bought at full price. Still ,some may qualify.
I guess the term “cheap thrill” is subjective. What is expensive to one person may be inexpensive to another. 🙂
I was thinking about that too but in my case, I have it covered!
You smell lovely, thanks for introducing me to that Caron! And I’ve got similar problems to yours, plus I also cover the “expensive and bought on a whim” category. But I should have a few options.
I’m very good at those too, actually. But the crowning glory of my perfumista career is successful blind buys!
What category are you going to put No.22 in? 😉
I think I may rely on the cheapest of thrills–swaps. The practice depends on the generosity of this community, which is great.
…
(or I’ll just wear Bulgari Black)
Hi! I am wearing Coquette Tropique, to brighten my day. It goes well with my Moringa body lotion, from The Body Shop, and it lasts such a long time.
I do not hear about Monyette Paris as much as I used to! They should do a new scent.
Yes, they should! They are now really hard to find in Canada…
I’ve seen Monyette Paris on Beauty Habit.
Apparently Shalimar’s a popular one today. I’m wearing the EDP and always say Shalimar’s my favorite, but don’t seem to wear it much. Funny, though, that every time I do wear it, I’m completely awed and fall in love all over again. What a wonderful feeling… which I’ll probably top off with a few dabs from my new vintage parfum bottle when I get home.
You smell divine!
I feel sometimes even though Shalimar is such a popular well known perfume, I don’t smell it often on other people. The streets smell more fruity Oriental instead of Shalimar style Oriental. So one may feel very unique when I wearing it. Just my opinion.
Agreed, which makes me love Shalimar even more. <3
Is there a striking difference between the vintage and the modern?
It’s the first time I’ve thought about it, but I’ve never actually smelled equivalent concentrations in both modern and vintage formulas. You hear about vintage almost always being better, but honestly, I have a bottle of vintage parfum and a bottle of the modern EDP, and I wear and love both.
Hello am in Iris Poudre today – it is lovely and I adore iris generally but I am trying to decide how ‘me’ it is. In any event it does smell good – does the fact that it comes as a mini count as a cheap thrill?
It isn’t me either!
Can someone describe it? The only iris I have is Prado’s, which I do like, but I’m curious about others.
Less rooty and more creamy with a bit of aldehydes. Smells to me like a really nice cold-cream. Very feminine. I also like it and have a travel size, though haven’t worn in much recently. It’s worth sampling if you like iris.
Fizzy iris with a just-ironed shirt smell and the BEST drydown of all perfumes I have ever tried.
LOVE love love that drydown. So fluffy.
It is pretty darned good. And you get there even faster with the body cream.
I love iris, but this one doesn’t speak to me. I can appreciate it intellectually, but that’s it.
I love Iris Poudre and it is me… every time I wear it, adorable hubbie has to nuzzle me… 🙂
I love it too! I try not to wear it too often so that I don’t tire of it.
It really isn’t me either. It’s always interesting and a relief to find that there are others that don’t click with something everyone else seems to rave about. Some of my scent twins love this one, but even identical twins have some differences.
Same – I like and appreciate it, but it isn’t very me. Perhaps I’ll grow into it, but for now I am very happy to explore much more affordable fragrances.
SOTD is Visa by Robert Piguet from a sample… Pretty fruitchouili. I’m surprised by how much I like this one. However, it’s a cloudy dreary day in New England and Visa is a good antedote for the weather. I wanted something warm and this one certainly is that with it’s sweet peachy/patch vibe.
oops typo.. that is antidote…
SOTD: Testing out MMM’s Lazy Sunday Morning.
One hour in, I have got to say the name should actually be Laundry Sunny Morning (or Febreze, your choice 😉 ).
Oh no… Hope it fades fast!
I want to like the MMMs but I have yet to find one that is worth the $$$.
Jazz Club?
I liked Jazz Club ok, but thought it was to masculine for me. I might retry it when it is colder.
The only one I like is their original Untitled EdP, but I feel it’s not getting much love around?
Me too. I gave up testing them after Beach Walk assaulted me one day through two attempts to scrub it.
Beach Walk was the only I tried from the line, and that was it – NEVER again!
Agree with all of the above. I have yet to be impressed.
oh good, I thought it was just me. The first thing I thought of was it smells like a dryer sheet. laundry doesn’t make for a lazy sunday.
Yahhh.. I had a problem w that one too…
I’m wearing Nahema, from a recently-acquired decant. The sprayer on this also went cattywampus. This may be a theme for the week.
I’ve had a couple of recent decants with wonky sprayers too – I managed to fix one of them by unscrewing the top a tiny bit (whereupon it let out a tiny pshhh sound) and then tightening again. Maybe they’re developing vapor-lock during shipping?
Ooh, thanks for the tip!
I sort of hope it keeps happening, so that I can see you use the word “cattywampus” on a regular basis.
Hah!
There is also katty-wonkered, for crooked. 🙂
I have never heard that! Will have to google to see if you made it up 😉
Oh, it’s a for-real Southern-ism. I use it, too.
Ok, will take your word for it!
Have you ever heard catty-cornered or cater-cornered?
around here we say kitty- corner. but I think most people sat catty.
Yes, I’ve heard both.
The perfume gods have smiled upon me, as has a very generous NSTer, and I am enjoying Amouage Fate Woman this morning. Warm, lovely and confidence-boosting on a day of another interview.
Also, Robin, you absolutely get an enablers pin from me for Bois d’Iris. I remember reading your review back in 2009 and going to visit it at Bergdorf’s soon after. It took me five years to make the plunge, but it was entirely because of you. Thank you!
I remember that review as well, although I still don’t own a full bottle.
I love mine, but I may be alone in that. It was also the context of the time – finally learning to treat myself. That bottle will always be special to me.
I like the scent very much, it’s just that I like some other irises even more. If they did a 30 ml bottle, I’d buy it right away.
You’re not alone dearest! I participated in a split here on NST and currently still have a little bit left because, drum roll please, the atomizer went catty-wampus on me!
That’s a slow burn then! But glad you came around to it. In all truth I don’t reach for it often enough given what I paid for it.
Me neither. I own it but very rarely wear it. I’m sure if I had an office job I’d wear it more often, but as I can wear what I want when I want, I steer toward those with a bit more of a voice.
Nice to be able to reach for that bottle when you’re in the mood though, isn’t it?
The fact that you, who I always perceive as being the most calm and reasonable among us, were tempted into the immediate purchase of a bottle spoke volumes to me at the time.
That’s a wonderful one! You smell fabulous! Fate is definitely a confidence booster.
Thanks dear! Much appreciated.
That’s a real beauty! It’s on my “I’d love a FB but it’s not in the budget” list! You smell fabulous 🙂
Thank you! *waft waft*
Beautiful scent
I bet it smells even better on you!
thegoddessrena has unicorn skin – just about everything smells good on her!
SotD is Cuir de Lancome. It was suggested to me as a gentle intro to leathers when I mentioned that I struggled with Chanel’s Cuir de Russie. It took a couple of tries, but I’m starting to get the appeal of leather. In Cuir de Lancome, it’s very womanly.
Cuir is so pretty.
That one is definitely a good leather to start with. There are enough floral notes in it to lighten up the leather.
Are there any stores that still carry/let you sample it?
I got my sample through Surrender to Chance, and I’ve seen full bottles available through online discounters.
Nope, it’s discontinued. (Unless you somehow find it at one of those kiosks like at the mall or something.)
SOTD is Arquiste for J.Crew No. 57. All I can smell is sweet whiskey after the burn has worn off, and I love it! Perfect for this chilly fall day.
I wanted to wear that today, but decided it probably wasn’t a good idea to smell as if I’ve been drinking in the office. Maybe this evening once I’m home.
I had that thought too late, but it seems to have a low sillage so you could get away with it…
Then again, booze is allowed (and sometimes encouraged) at my work, so that’s not much of a worry for me.
Are you hiring?
I think you could pull it off. (As long as you don’t work in a church or school.) Not only is the sillage low, the lasting power isn’t very good. I think you’d smell boozy when you applied it, but by the time you got to work it would be more of a sweet, cozy comfort scent. After about six hours you may as well have worn Coty’s Wild Musk. Not that that’s a bad thing. 🙂
This happened to me with Spiritueuse Double Vanille and it was very prominent when I was riding the elevator down from the 50th floor to the lobby.
You smell great! Now I’m considering 57 for tomorrow. 🙂
Thanks! I think you should go for it. It really is nice for this time of year.
It looks like Friday’s perfume has been decided for me. The only ‘cheap’ perfume that I have the original Lolita Lempicka. I have to agree with Ms. Sanchez that the bottle is darling but the perfume is great.
Right now, I am wearing Cuir de Russie in EDT. This is the first perfume that made me fall down the rabbit hole about 6 years ago.
What a way to kick off your fall! Although I kind of started with Fracas, not too shabby either 🙂
Summer has arrived! It’s the beginning of a week of hot weather here, so today was one of my hot day faves, Caron’s Eau de Reglisse. I think Luca Turin described it as lemon coffee, which may not be untrue… I love the lemonyness 🙂
Yes! Summer has finally organised itself here as well! I am starting to eye my colognes–yes, yes, Narcisse Bleu, I can see you; you’re next–but I am still loving the heavies. I wonder how hot it will have to be before I put away Black Cashmere and the Elephant?
I’m wearing Le Labo’s new “tea” fragrance – it’s more dry wood and gentle spices on me, although I do detect some tea when looking for it. Nice enough, but no need get a bottle, fortunately.
I was a bit underwhelmed by it too but it reminds me of their Laurier 62 candle which is one of my favorites. I think I associate the scent to the candle so much that it just felt a little off when I was testing it.
I can imagine it working very well as a candle, I’ll keep Laurier 62 in mind – thanks!
Have you tried Le Labo Patchouli?
Yes, I bought a bottle for Juhan from NYC. It’s my favourite in the line.
Today I’m in Bottega Veneta. Trying to make an effort to use more from my full bottles lately.
I’m traveling to attend a wedding this weekend and having fun thinking of what to wear. Most of my usuals are pretty quiet, but it will be a long, fun, chilly night so I’m thinking of bringing samples of the big guns–something like Portrait of a Lady, or Coromandel!
PoaL would be fabulous!
That’s what I’m leaning towards! But I’ll probably bring 3-4 samples… in case of last minute cravings!
Scent twins!! I’ve actually never tried Coromandel. I need to remedy that. PoaL is pretty fab, though.
I sort of have a love-hate relationship with Coromandel. When it’s right, it’s really really right! But I can only really wear it on cool evenings.
After talking about Mitzah here yesterday, I was inspired to pull out my bottle of Dior Ambre Nuit this morning. A staple from last winter, I haven’t worn it since. I love that it’s different from my other ambers, with its dusty rose.
Waiting for the temperature to drop so I can use my Ambre Sultan again.
Gotta love ambers. 🙂
Ambre Sultan is an interesting one. I went through a sample last winter but couldn’t decide if it was for me or not. I think another sample is needed for this winter.
Ambre Nuit is also gorgeous. Mitzah is my favorite but I also own Ambre Nuit and enjoy that frequently. They are different enough to own both (or so I tell myself) 😉
Good to know! 😉
I totally agree! Own both and am wearing Ambre Nuit today.
My SOTD is Comme de Garcon’s Jalsimer from the Insense Series…good for a rainy, dreary November day.
It’s my favourite in that series.
Oh, I love that one but after the first wonderful nose full, it just seems to disappear. You smell great
Continuing Cheap Thrill week! Today’s SOTD = Kenzo Flower. I found my 1 oz edp at Marshall’s for $30, but I’m sure you can find it online for cheaper.
To me, Kenzo Flower exemplifies the concept that perfume is olfactory art. Despite never smelling anything like it, and thereby avoiding unwarranted emotional associations, this perfume makes me feel happy. 🙂
If you’d like to know more, BdJ did a glowing review of Kenzo Flower.
Also, this perfume is potent; I limit myself to 2 sprays for the office (one on my chest, under clothes, the other on a wrist which dab on the other wrist and then both sides of my neck, behind the ears).
It fascinates me how different scents can be on each individual. Kenzo Flower is virtually non-existent on me. It starts light and powdery and is gone within an hour!
I just got Flower at Marshall’s too! I remember dismissing it as too powdery the first time I tried it, but liked it more when I revisited a year or so ago. And I was in the mood to buy something, so I did. And Victoria’s review was a factor as well.
I’m wearing Scherrer 2, which was a happy accident. I decided to buy the eponymous Jean-Louis Scherrer. I should have checked the picture on Ebay more closely, because I ended up with Scherrer 2. However, I am really enjoying it, so it’s all good. I am probably still going to try to get the Jean-Louis Scherrer, since I’ve read some good things about it.
Not to enable, but Scherrer is lovely. And I’m not even a big green-lover.
(Whoops – I enabled anyway.) 🙂
Scherrer also makes for fantastic room spray. My apt lingers for days after I’ve worn it.
Not that you’d want to use it for that purpose but just in case.
OK, I’m officially in serious like with Scherrer 2. It’s full bottle worthy, and a cheap thrill! Yea!
I’m basking in Azemour today – just heaven!
Love that one!
Wearing A Lab on Fire’s Mon Musc à Moi while curled up on the couch, chunky sweater and all, on this cold San Francisco morning. This was a blind buy from an eBay seller who sprayed it once and decided it wasn’t for her. Luckily I really like it, I would even go as far to say that I love it.
Wow. You sound very cosy!
I am so grateful to impulsive perfume lovers who sell their unloved niche perfumes on ebay! I’ve acquired many favs less expensively that way.
The mention of Memoir yesterday was on my mind this morning. It’s cold, rainy boot weather here, so I wanted something cozy. Memoir it is.
SOTD is one of my favorite cheap thrills – Esprit d’Oscar.
One of my favorites! A spritely, white floral. It layers wonderfully with coconut body lotion.
Oh, that should be my Cheap Thrill! It’s so good.
SOTD is Nirvana Black Body oil topped with L’Artisan Safran Troublant. Delicious combo!
Ooh, that sounds lovely!
Oooh – that sounds brilliant.
Wearing my favorite fruity floral done right, Il Bacio. Created in 1993, I wore this on special occasions during my almost 20 year perfume hiatus. At that time it was the only perfume I owned and seemed like a ridiculous indulgence with two small children and an even smaller household budget. It is still recognizably itself though reformulation has diluted some of the spice. I have a big bottle which I purchased for under $30 and the unanswered question is why Borghese persists in giving this away so cheaply since it is vastly superior to just about anything else out there in this category.
I agree, it really is wonderfully different. I also wore it when it first came out. I go back and forth though about getting another bottle. You might have talked me into it.
Chergui for me today. I find it intriguing how it morphs from moment to moment and day to day. When I first applied it this morning I got a big whiff of cedar, which I had not noticed as much in previous wears.
Chergui is so beautiful, and so complex!
Chergui is lovely. You smell great!
Wearing a new red sweater and Mitsouko. Training someone on some stuff that should reduce my workload.
Happy Tuesday!
Mitsouko is one I love and should wear more often. Sometimes I worry that the general public won’t “get it,” so I end up wearing it for weekends at home. Which seems silly.
Reduced Workload! WooHoo! Smelling great is the cherry on top 🙂
Drained the last of a sample of Jo Malone Red Rose Oud. Very pretty rose/incense scent but not very oud-ish. I still like it quite a bit- especially with this incredibly foggy morning.
Bvlgari Black, which I was inspired to wear after reading the review on Aftelier Vanilla Smoke yesterday 🙂
I put on a little Le Labo The Noir 29 today. I did smell the tea initially, and then I noticed some fruit (the fig, I am thinking). Sometimes fig doesn’t work for me and I wasn’t too crazy about it here – it was sweet and a bit overripe or something. Now it has settled down and the tea seems to be re-appearing, along with some of the other notes.
Twins!
Sampling Salome today. Powerful stuff that I probably won’t need a bottle of and for my SOTD other than the Salome hand it’s Ineke Sweet William
It is strong. I might have overdone it a bit this weekend.
I have a bottle of Tobacco Rose, but I’m not even going to sample Salome. Sounds way too *ahem* womanly for me. How are you liking it?
APOM Pour Femme left on my jacket from late last night unfortunately. It reminds me of thick, sweet, almond-paste scented nail polish if such thing exists. I scrubbed it off but thar she lingers and rather strongly at that. Yikes.
And otherwise Ostara which is rather narciss-y and crisp and dry musky. Very different from what I’d usually wear. At one point I wasn’t sure if I was smelling my papers at work or the frag. NIce but not near further purchase worthy unless magic happens.
*Narcissus-sy, or narcissus-y perhaps. Narcissussy. Dang.
😀
I sniffed APOM Pour Femme recently and liked it. Then I sprayed it on to wear around and just kept thinking, “nope.” Just didn’t work.
I find the piercing note in APOM very hard to describe. It’s like an icepick up my nose . . . a nauseating, goopy, nail-polish covered icepick. And it does not go away.
I really liked Ostara… I think that I might even decide to ignore that dull musk drydown because the top is SO pretty.
And then I think, no, I really need a bottle of DelRae Wit first. Not that they smell the same, but they have a similar lighthearted, shining eyes feeling.
WIT for the win!
Mitzah today since it was mentioned yesterday. This one is a bit over the top for the office, but it will also be my SOTE when I go to my cousin’s for dinner. She’s made fun of me for wearing “nice” fragrances, ie. innocent, and I don’t think Mitzah would be described as “nice”.
yay! Mitzah is a fave of mine. I wore it to the office yesterday (and do frequently), guess I still care more about my own enjoyment than what colleagues might perceive as Office Friendly….. but I do try more than I used to 10 years ago, try for the light and offensive (and ultimately boring for me!)….
I meant INoffensive, not offensive! WOOPSIE!
I also try to be careful with fragrance in the office (except today) – or it will be BANNED. No fragrances allowed including moisturizer!
Cristalle! The usual performance: shop 1 had Cristalle Vert only, shop 2 had Cristalle EDP and EDT but no sample bottle for either, shop 3:Cristalle has been discontinued. No Bulgari tea scents…but thanks for the suggestion Austenfan.
I had to go and have a coffee and ask myself ‘What would Annikky and ElisaP do in this situation? The answer came in a flash…leave this hick town and move somewhere where perfume vending machines and spray stations can be found on every corner. So I packed my bags and flew to NY…no, that’s right, I had to pick my so up from school at 3. I settled for Plan B…..Cristalle EDP unsniffed. Talk about exciting….I unwrapped the box while standing at the counter and then sprayed both myself and the shop assistant.
She loved it. I loved it! we all loved it…even the parking warden loved it ( made that up ).
So…double pins to the girl gang! And thanks. Why does the name Cristalle make me think of Sarah Moon photos?
In my hick town it seems that only femmes under 30 and men wear fragrance. I have to reply on samples to get a whiff of anything interesting. This is a bit of an exaggeration, but just a bit.
Kanuka, please tell me you write cozy mysteries for us all to enjoy?
Brilliant outcome! Cristalle is a favourite and a summer staple up here.
I’m in a tricky situation….friends are coming to stay tonight and tomorrow they fly to Australia…and I think we all know what that means. Can I trust them to go to a Chanel boutique…Bois de …. Rue Chambon….
They are the type of friends who would come back with a bottle of Charlie because, hey, it’s all perfume, right?
Ultimately you’ll have to determine whether or not you trust them to fulfill a request. However, if you do make a perfume request I would suggest being ultra-specific.
You could try giving them a list (preferably something they can find on their phones), and tell them to just give the list to the SAs.
The list should have brand, name, concentration (EDP, EDT, etc), size (if they offer more than one), and even a picture (especially if it can be confused with something else, such as flankers). If you know where you’re friends will be, you might even tell them exactly which shop to go to.
For my birthday I gave my brother a comprehensive list, and he still told me the perfume shopping was overwhelming (mainly because of ignorant and/or pushy SAs). So be sure to thank them for the effort, regardless of what they bring you.
Good luck!
Good advice, thanks.
If you could wait until next May (my birthday) I’ll be in Melbourne, in the Chanel boutique, and would happily be your mule. I can also offer you a very reliable perfumista –one of my staff– next week. She would follow your instructions to the last cross on the last t. Happy to do this for you.
Thank you! I think I might just sit tight until I can go. Half the pleasure is the anticipation…hee hee
Why would anyone fly to Aus to buy perfume at a Chanel boutique? Imported cosmetics & perfume suffer terribly under the Aussie dollar. (Unless you live in NZ in which case anything goes I suppose.)
I can’t remember having seen Charlie anywhere though so no worries.
Oh. Well, we don’t go to Australia simply in order to buy cosmetics, of course. That would just be silly, wouldn’t it?
Yeah we also go to eat cake and drink fine wines
😀 Full disclosure, I only have a small decant and most of my shopping is done on-line despite living in NYC where the streets are paved with perfume bottles. But glad you like it so far! Whew! That was an intensely suspenseful read! I think I need to lie down now.
I am in a part of town where there are still sidewalk prisms, and now I am going to pretend they are perfume bottles…
Excellent outcome! I was wondering if you managed to find Cristalle. And I really shouldn’t be saying this, but if you can, try the EDT as well…
I think the sales assistant might hide next time she sees me coming. Maybe I should get the job…there are very few customers and they all buy Elie Saab or Si at the moment. I know that because that’s what she suggested I buy.
I think they have all learned not to offer me Si, I get that psychopathic look in my eyes when they do… Not that it’s so much worse than the others, but I love Cate and think this was such a wasted opportunity to do a moderately intelligent scent for non-teenagers, instead of a boring, condescending syrup. Ah, well. Rant over.
When an SA comes close to me when I’m in the zone of spraying and sniffing and asks me “How can I help you?” (or some derivation of this), I would slowly turn my entire body to face her, lock my eyeballs on hers, smile, then say “Thank you. I will let you know when I need help.” Many simply back away…
Fantastic story.
I’m cheap thrilling it again in CK Be.
Yay to the affordable!
I believe that having a bottle of CKOne in the fridge is a necessity of life. Whenever I am feeling over heated emotionally and/or physically I pull my perfectly chilled bottle out of the fridge and spray the nape of my neck and the inside of my wrists. Blissful, clean, cooling. Ahhhhhh……..
SOTD is 31 Rue Cambon from my too-big collection of unsatisfying 1 ml samples. I resolved to work my way through them all, but it’s so hard to get enough scent on me from those tiny bottles. Rue Cambon is still with me, close to the skin, but I want it to be larger. I’ll see how long I can stay away from spray sizes.
In the case of Rue Cambon, I recommend not staying away 🙂
SOTD People of the Labyrinths Luctor et Emergo
POTL is quite a blast from the past, eh?
Seems like nobody has mentioned this stuff in about 8 years! I must say, I’m not loving this today. I enjoyed it for about an hour but now I’m finding it tiresome.
Like a too-chatty friend?
HaHa! Yes, kind of like that….! Just stop talking and leave me alone!
It hasn’t been quite 8 years!
https://nstperfume.com/2015/04/17/friday-scent-of-the-day-417/
Gidday, all. Ages ago I bought some Amande Persane dry body oil at the Roger et Gallet shop on Rue St Honore. It’s one of those scents that starts with a roar and ends with a whisper not too long afterwards, so mostly I wear it to bed after my evening shower. It’s quick, it smells lovely for about the same length of time that I’m awake, it doesn’t project too far. This morning after my shower, I just couldn’t be bothered with the whole skin-nourishing-body-lotion performance, so I used the oil, and then Rahat Loukoum, and the one seems to amplify the almondness of the other. I think I smell gorgeous. More than twice as gorgeous than either alone makes me smell. And feel. And that is really quite a claim, because either alone is up towards the top of the scale for cheering me up. So yay! I’m bravely starting to layer, and I’m getting the hang of it.
There’s a new Roger et Gallet at The Bay, so I might have to see whether they stock the Amande Persane.
I have to say that I didn’t go,”Oh stop! That’s the very thing for me!” when the delightful shop assistant was showing me things. It was more that I had my box of carnation soap, I was in Paris, in a mood to buy memories, you know how it can be! At first I was a little disappointed, but then, it’s hard for anything to live up to to the carnation soap. However, the oil has grown on me over time, and now I love it in the circumstances I’ve described.
By the way, thank you for telling me about the R&G shop in San Francisco. I shall definitely visit it next year– I need more of the soap!
Where is the shop in SF? I’ll be popping through on Sunday so am curious…
I rode the remnants of last night’s Tobacco Vanille for most of the morning, then went for Ambre Sultan. It is rainy and grey here, but I don’t mind because I smell great 😉
Smelling great in cozy perfumes helps make cold, dreary days bearable. 🙂
SOTD is Prada Infusion d’Iris Absolue which I love but think I over-did on my upper half and then donned a scarf so I’m getting to smell lots of it today. Maybe more than I need, but better this than something regrettably big.
I’m cultivating an interest in scarves, recently vintage silk ones, since I don’t accessorize much. And also because I need to spend more time on eBay; -)
Ah, what an excellent way to spend more time on Ebay! Glad you mentioned it!
I’m not very skilled bidder yet so I’ve lost out on some nice bargains. Practice! But I’ve underappreciated scarves as wearable art.
I like esnipe for placing my bids
I’ve been happy with sniping.
With these caveats: I only snipe things that I really, really, really want. And I only put in the absolute maximum that I am willing to pay, which to my mind is like submitting my best offer through a sealed envelope. I’ve lost a snipe or two, but have been successful more often than not.
I love scarves. They are the same as jewelry as far as I’m concerned. Mai Tai’s picture book has some good knots.
Thanks for the rec! I need somehelp with that, too.
One of my roommates teases me because I’m a teeny, tiny bit obsessed with vintage silk scarves, especially Liberty of London. Are there any in particular you’re developing a fondness for?
The Liberty of London *are* nice and have been watching a few. I’m not looking for particular brands, necessarily. It’s more about print and colors and if it happens to be a luxury brand and a good deal, even better. My favorite acquisition, so far, is a black silk “butterfly” poncho(like a huge silk scarf with hole for head and arms)w/floral /polka dot design by Lanvin. It was pretty much a steal.
I am wearing J’adore touche de parfum and loving it a lot.
In Encens Mythique, but am all too aware that I am at work. Perhaps I did not spritz enough.
Yes, spritz away!!
I had to re read this to make sure I understood what you meant!
This made me laugh.
After 10 days on non-stop rain, the sun is shining in Atlanta! I’m wearing Balenciaga Paris and feeling awesome! 🙂
BP is a great scent to feel awesome in.
I’m wearing Bottega Veneta today. I tend to neglect this one for some reason.. I think sometimes it’s because while it lasts fairly well, it wears very close on me, and I have to get wrist-to-nose to smell it. I love her but wish she were just a little bit less well-mannered, I guess.
Sounds like a candidate for layering.
Have you tried spraying your hair or clothing? I can usually smell it around me that way.
I’m wearing vintage Jean Couturier Kéora EdT again (Asian duck cap). Today it is reminding me of vintage Shalimar EdT. Less vanilla and less drama; a string quartet rather than opera.
Wearing Vetiver Tonka for coziness on a rainy day. I also had a meeting today which I thought would be very antagonistic (more need for coziness) but which turned out really well. Cozy is still good though.
I wanted to sample VC&A Ambre Imperial today, but the sample vial slipped out of my fingers and emptied onto my jeans. So I took them off to sniff it (I know, I know, what perfumistas go through to smell something new). It’s heavy on tonka, and sweeter than I had imagined. Waiting for more amber now.
I think you might start a trend. Spray my jeans samples will be the next big thing. Can’t wait.
😉
Santal Massoia for me today. Sample I brought for my travels. I can’t really smell it though…very light.
I mostly will smell like Lush Charity Pot lotion. Have been slathering it on my hands…
Started the day in Gucci Guilty Black. The best of the Guilty line imo. On my lunch break, I went and sprayed Giorgio Red on one hand and Kenzo Flower on the other. I used to love and wear Red, but wow, it smells very different and not appealing anymore. Kenzo Flower just smelled like Chantilly dusting powder on me. so, now I pretty much just smell stinky.
And then someone comes along and brightly says, “Ooohh, you smell so good! What are you wearing?” and you search for a way to explain…
SOTD = Indult Tihota
I am continuing my vanilla week. I would consider this a reference Vanilla with which to compare other vanillas. It is a full, rich, creamy and VERY vanilla. According to Fragrantica, it only has vanilla and musk and paradoxically, its simplicity makes it complex.
Vanilla and musk…sounds good to me. I’m probably complex in my simplicity too.
This sounds like one I definitely will explore. 🙂
Last Saturday we drove to Charlotte to see what Neiman Marcus had in the way of non-mainstreams. Van Cleef & Arpel, Maison Francis Kurdsjian, Armani Prive, besides Tom Ford and Jo Malone.
Even better: Hermes boutique just outside NM’s doors in the mall (Southpark). Got a few samples from each.
Oh, and Dyptique at Nordstrom there (not in Raleigh).
It’s been raining here for 10 days, and in a hotel that means smokers stay indoors and smoke in their non-smoking rooms. So being halfway to bronchitis again I’ve been a little perfume shy. Trying Osmanthe Yunnan. Fleeting indeed, but safe. And beautiful.
Kanuka, I’m reading Edwin + Matilda and loving it.
Sounds like a lovely outing!
OY is so beautiful, so fleeting.
I’m haunted by Chanel No. 5 this afternoon. I keep smelling something like it as I go about my day, but I’m not wearing it.
Could it be the remains of Infusion d’Iris from last night plus the dab of Hiris this morning? Doesn’t seem likely. Or maybe it’s the cold wind that is blowing . . . and playing tricks on my nose.
That often happens to me at home – perhaps it got sprayed on some pillows/curtains? Or perhaps something you frequently come into contact with. For instance, my quilts perpetually smell like my nightime perfumes.
You’re right! It’s on my sweater and in my car, and somehow the cold, windy day has drawn the lingering scent out.
Went to a dinner theater Christmas show today, with my parents and the “Young at Heart” senior group from the church where I grew up… they needed one more person to get the group discount, and even though I am fundamentally opposed to Christmas stuff before Thanksgiving, well. I went. 🙂
Had a great time.
Meant to wear Iris Poudre, but picked up the wrong decant and spritzed Idylle edt instead. (That Iris Poudre decant is nearly dead anyway – maybe I should refill it from the bottle I got for my birthday last January and just sling it in my purse for emergencies.)
Perfume emergencies are my favorite emergencies. It is usually easy to remedy such a situation, and the tricksy ones are often the most fun to work out. 😉
