Monday scent of the day 10/26

Posted by Robin on 26 October 2015 198 Comments

A Lab On Fire Mon Musc à Moi, bottle detail

Hope everyone had a great weekend! What fragrance did you pick for today?

I'm trying A Lab On Fire Mon Musc à Moi.

Reminder: this Friday, 10/30, will be the Halloween Special: wear the fragrance that would match your fantasy Halloween costume (or your real Halloween costume, or one you've worn in the past).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Hi! Today, I’m wearing The 7 Virtues Middle East Peace, a sweet grapefruit scent, to give me energy to start the week right.

If I may answer, they are nice, beautiful fragrances that are not very original but well made. They are vegan and not tested on animals and some of the ingredients are sourced to support countries experiencing war or other difficult situations. I wear Middle East Peace quite often. i have yet to try the others.

I won the Vetiver of Haiti from Robin’s giveaway a few years ago. Nice, uncomplicated, reasonably priced, great for layering. You could do much worse for a lot more money! I’ve always meant to smell the others in the line…

Noble Rose of Afghanistan smells natural, bright, and a little spicy. It’s a soliflore.

    J. Crew for Arquiste No. 31. The rollerball was $6.30 by the time I made it to J. Crew- at that price, I felt like I was personally mugging Carlos Huber. Anyway, it’s a truly lovely, ripe rose, a nice contrast to the antiseptic Fairfax County offices in which I’m spending the morning.

Bought a bottle this weekend for $24.00. Manager of J.Crew at the Willowbrook Mall, NJ said both fragrances are being discontinued.

The sale does seem pretty clearance-y, but for what it’s worth, Arquiste said on Twitter that they are not being discontinued.

In this particular case, I’d tend to go by the prices — at least, if I loved one of them, I’d start hoarding.

I’m wearing a very healthy dose of ELDO Jasmin et Cigarette this morning. I never would have guessed I’d like this as much as I do, but the honeyed tobacco note is just lovely. This smells delightfully like something I will shamelessly and repeatedly overapply.

I’m wearing Aphrodite’s Slipper Orchid by Demeter. Very, very nice.

It smells like mildly spiced freshly mown hay. It’s grassy with the lightest touch of cinnamon and cloves. It does not smell like potpourri. I don’t mind smelling like potpourri sometimes, but I already have that covered in my collection :-)

After a couple of hours, I can only smell it if I press my nose to my arm, but it’s so inexpensive ($20 an ounce and $40 for four ounces) that I can afford to reapply.

“Freshly mown hay” is another drool-inducing phrase for me. So often when people say “hay” about a fragrance, that note is something that doesn’t read as hay to me.

Yeah, I love that smell. I’ve also smelled plenty of dried hay because my in-laws have horses. It smells greener and fresher than dried hay to me.

I mean the hay note in the perfume smells greener and fresher than dried hay. As the green fades, it smells more like dried hay.

I must go apply some more now!

Working through a backlog of samples so I tried Impérial Opoponax by Les Néréides, and it is SO sweet. I think twenty or thirty years ago I might have liked it (I mean, I used to wear the original Lagerfeld in the eighties, nothing sweeter than that), but my tastes have changed and this sort of thing just doesn’t work any more.

Sorry it doesn’t work for you, it’s one of my favorite winter perfumes. I even layer it with Les Nereides Patchouli Antique sometimes and I admit, that is a lot of heavy sweetness….but sometimes in January, perfume has to climb through at least three heavy layers of clothing before I can smell it! On to the next samples :)

White was very long-lived for me, but I found it to have one of those scratchy-plastic notes that really annoy me so it wasn’t a good thing. I hope it works better for you than it did for me and lasts well. Most people seem to quite like it.
I adore Opardu and find it lasts okay, but I probably over apply in the first place. I certainly couldn’t afford a bottle if I sprayed it the way I spray my decant.

Wearing my sample of Parfums DelRae’s Bois de Paradis, and realizing that well done fruity woods are my thing…or one of my things. (I have a lot of things.)

Went to my first Sniffapalooza this weekend and had no idea how exhausting it could be. A lot of fun though. A big part of why I moved to New York was a desire experience things like like this. There may be other drawbacks to the place, but having the opportunity to do this makes me feel very lucky.

My scent eating skin loves fruity chypres, and i was wondering if u could tell me if you’ve tried Aedes venustes, the rhubarb one. I sprayed it onto my coat in Liberty on saturday, and absolutely love it, but have heard that it’s quiet and doesn’t last long, and for the price it would need to (for me), i won’t be near a store to spray on skin for a while, so thoughts would be apreciated.
Please chime in, any one, thanks!

I haven’t actually tried that one on skin, though I will say, based on my having sniffed from the bottles in the store, that all the Aedes scents are very well done. I can’t speak to its lasting power though. Maybe someone else can chime in…

        Great minds.

Even when the scents aren’t my style (Mythique was too powdery for my taste when I tested it the other night), I’ve always found Parfums DelRae’s scents to be well-done.

Read your comment, realized I had a sample of Bois de Paradis that I’d never tried, dug it out, and dabbed. It’s quite sweet on me so far; I’ll reserve judgment for a while… Found a untried sample of Fendi Palazzo, too, so I dabbed that on the other arm. Not sure I like it, but catching whiffs of the Delrae along with the Fendi probably doesn’t help either one.

I envy all you Paloozers the Sniffapalooza experience! I hope to make it to one someday.

Haven’t tried Palazzo. Fragrantica reports that the scent is “devoted to women who are very delicate and feminine,” and though I’ve got the feminine part covered, it might find me lacking in delicacy. :)

Palazzo is very powdery, but not, it my experience, very delicate! I have a very little decant that has lasted due to necessary sparing-ness of use.

          • FearsMice says:
            26 October 2015 at 3:59 pm

I didn’t get any delicacy from Palazzo, or much femininity, either: it actually made me think of men’s shaving cream.

I’ll have to give Bois de Paradis another go (when Palazzo’s not around to brutalize it).

In Iris Poudre today – I have blown through my travel spray of this, one more application and it will be gone. So then the question will be, FB of this, or another small bottle of this + a decant of Bois d’Iris, since I love them both, or is there some other Iris I should invest in? (Given that Iris Silver Mist just does not do it for me, I know, I know…) IP is the one perfume I have that adorable hubby notices and comments on positively, every single time I wear it…

Hey! Thank you! It’s Plum Lush from last year- it was a gift and I did not open it until this morning. It’s very, very pretty indeed. If you have tan to dark skin this will look like a cool toned mauve-berry. If you are pale this will be a very striking berry, but not Goth at all.

I remember this one being launched, it’s a striking colour (and I’m quite pale). Was it you wearing Love Bruise a while back or someone else? I love mauve, berry and plum colours and especially the ones that are difficult to define.

I feel a right fool when buying TF lipsticks/glosses – the cost is crazy- but as a result I do wear the colors regularly and I don’t have more than a handful of lipsticks at a time!

Finishing the hubs’ second campaign finance report, due today. (One more to go, due about a week after the election on 11/3.) Ugh. If this was anything other than a local election, I can tell you it wouldn’t be ME completing this report…

Tested Alien Essence Absolue over the weekend, and liked it less than the original Alien. I expected to like it more, but there’s something plasticky/throat-raspy in there. Well, that’s in the original as well, but in smaller quantities. I can’t do this one. :(

It’s chilly and I wanted spicy comfort, so I’m wearing a dab of Dolce Vita parfum. Delish.

Chypre Mousse for a day of digging sandburs along the edge of the pasture. I figure it will keep me on my toes and not wear off no matter how warm and tired I get. Wish spraying the danged things with herbicide would kill them (can’t use pre-emergent due to surrounding native grasses and warm temperatures/lack of water) maybe I should try dousing them in Chypre Mousse. Pretty sure that as much as I love it, I would curl up and die if anyone coated me in it ;)

That is hard work! We burn our fence rows in the spring, and then again on some rainy fall day, It’s sorta fun, instead of back breaking, and after 4 years of doing so we see a great improvement. Not much growing in a 15 inch wide swath except grass… Can you burn off those patches?

We’ve never done that. Fire doesn’t damage your fence posts?

We do have some temporary (movable – we do rotational grazing) fences with metal fence posts, but most of the permanent fencing is done with locust posts.

Fields that get regularly bushhogged don’t have trouble with cedar trees or floribunda roses, but thistles and wild blackberry bushes are a constant problem here.

It’s a very controlled fire with a little flamethrower and a small bottle of propane, and another big water bottle. More like you go along and scorch everything that is there, and then squirt anything that seems inclined to keep burning with some water… When you first start doing it, it is prudent to cut down woody stuff, that might be inclined to harbor embers…

Thistles and floribunda roses we deal with – wild blackberry doesn’t thrive where we are, thank goodness.

I love the scent of those floribunda roses when they are blooming, tho. I try to pick the blossoms and make some rosewater, but I have to time it just right. Last year, they bloomed one day, and then it rained for three days, and I got no blossoms. Hopeful next spring… Too bad they are such vicious plants, tho. They rip one’s clothes, and the ponies’s tender noses…ugh.

I don’t know that I could convince teh hubs that it would be a good idea for here. He tends to let the fence rows just grow and then hack them down/spray whatever lives past the machetes every 3-4 years; I suspect he’d claim that yearly burning would be too labor-intensive. We do bushhog every pasture at least once a summer anyway, and that gets rid of the worst offenders.

We have cows, no horses – oh, and Gaze’s six 4H-project hair sheep.

We tried torching them for several years, but with perpetual burn bans it’s pretty tough to keep to a schedule. We used to be permitted controlled burns, just had to call the VFD and let them know and they would send someone over with the tanker to read a book while we did it. Now, though, we have a new fire chief and he has stopped that practice. In fact, we found out the other day that he has disconnected the only non-emergency number and you have to call 911 to contact them. Not a popular move, especially for a newcomer, in a small community.

Here too, at least it used to be. My dad was a volunteer fireman and in charge of their rescue training as well as much of their community involvement stuff. I understand that most of the old guard got miffed and quit and since I don’t technically live here, I don’t know any of the newbies. Such a shame because they really used to do a lot for the community.

Holy carginogens, Robin, the World Health Organization is publicly besmirching bacon! (check out CNN)

I’m wearing a touch of the decidedly unsmokey By Night White from Profumi del Forte. I think Ringthing is right (see above), some of the heavier scents call for multiple layers of clothing. Maybe they filter the scents for a softer effect?

Saw that. There has been evidence for some time that processed meats have some connection to cancer, but it’s really hard to tease out what that means if you’re eating, say, bacon, but also lots of fresh fruits and veggies, and also if you are paying extra for bacon from properly raised pigs as opposed to factory farmed. So I plan to go on eating my bacon!

Like that NPR pointed out that aloe vera is also possibly carcinogenic :-)

In the last area I lived, uranium washed down from the hills and into the water supply. I found on researching allowable levels in municipal water supplies that the US was the highest, Canadian a bit more stringent, and WHO the absolute lowest. While I imagine this is a tad overly cautionary, I also appreciate that they are a reliable, uncorrupted bellweather. (Please, no one burst my bubble.)

As well as trying out Aedes de Venustas, which i adored on saturday, i also fell for Parfum de Therese (malle), which i think might be my gateway to appreciating vintage Diorella, im having trouble with that one, tho i thought i’d love it. Also really liked Musc Ravageur, but trying to talk myself into crossing it off my list as its similar (to my nose) to shalimar and Habit Rouge. my list is getting worryingly long!

Another Cuir lover here… can’t manage BV at all because of the patchouli. Didn’t notice the fruit (though that could be due to my low-ppm threshold for patch in general causing me to shriek things like, “Leather scent my foot, this is one of those evil clean-patchouli florals!” So. Your mileage may vary, of course. :)

    SOTD is Reem Acra.

I got back from my trip to Jersey/Philly on Saturday. Didn’t get to do everything I wanted to, but had a great time nonetheless. I really wanted to stop by Ari’s shop on the drive back but it didn’t work out.

However, I did make a surprise vintage haul. I found a little tester mini of Cuir de Russie in an antique shop in the back of a gallery in Long Beach Island. The stopper is broken and really stuck in there, but I’m going to try and get it out. And then, when my friend and I visited her grandma, she was giving some things away, and some of those things happened to be perfumes (totally coincidence.. she didn’t know of my junkiehood)! So I got a a partial bottle of Emeraude, Revlon Ciara, Faberge Woodhue, a L’Air du Temps mini, Houbigant Chantilly, a mini of Arpege, and a couple other things that I’m forgetting. It was a nice surprise.

Asking my Granny what perfume she wore most often is one of the smartest things I ever did. It was Cinnabar, and she thought it had been discontinued because it’s never on display. I was able to get a bottle for each of us, which made her so happy and gave me the greatest gateway to memories after she died. My aunt took Granny’s bottle, which is great because she loves perfume too. I know it has helped her when she struggles to deal with Granny’s passing. As for my Pa,…I didn’t ask, I just stick my head in a can of Prince Albert when I want to remember him. :)

I’ll bet if you ask family members you can figure out what her signature(s) was. You may not be able to talk for hours about it, but you’ll still bond. It’s an almost literal version of putting yourself in someone else’s shoes.

It was so fun to be on a college campus and spending time in the dorm. It brought back such memories of when I was 18 although am happy to know that my daughter is so much wiser than I was at her age!

Today I am enjoying CK Reveal and love that every time I wear it my son tells me how much he likes it. I think this could be a good fragrance for both women and men.

    SOTD = SL Chergui

Chergui is one of my favorite Fall perfumes. It seems like the leaves turned orange and golden overnight, announcing that Fall is here to stay. On me, Chergui is sweet amber tobacco with dark chocolate although I may be the only one who smells chocolate. What you get out of Chergui is influenced by how much you put on — too few (2) and it smells like bug spray, too much and you asphyxiate people within a 5-foot radius; 5 sprays from a 10 mL atomizer or 3-4 from the FB is just right. I have never dabbed so I have no opinion on dab vs spray.

In the realm of something disgusting that happened to me this morning — someone broke wind not once, not twice but THREE times in a span of 15 minutes! The unfortunate thing was that I was on the train and therefore, a captive audience. I wish I had my Choco Musk roll on with me so I can OD on it while the silent music was playing. Actually, I may dab some Aftelier Bergamoss in a sandwich baggie so I can huff it when a similar situation arises; or maybe I’ll use Tiger Balm. Does anyone have a better suggestion? I was at least able to cover my nose with my scarf.

Started the week with a visit to the dentist for scaling and root planing. It was as bad as it sounds, too. I’m a dental baby so they had to numb me up and only did half of my mouth. The other half gets done tomorrow. Oh, joy!

So, to console myself, I bought a super duper cheap (Amazon bucks are wonderful!) bottle of SL Feminite de Bois because I have been wanting it for a long time.

SCRP should never be performed without anesthetic. I have known of shady offices who charge for a scaling and claim not to need to anesthetize, but mostly from patients whose teeth are falling out from a history of poor dentistry.
You shouldn’t experience any discomfort if done properly and with properly administered anesthetic. Pain after a dental cleaning or SCRP is almost always a sign of a rough hygienist and is completely unnecessary and unacceptable. You should have tender gums for a day or so, of course, but nothing that a couple of ibuprofen can’t fix. A good hygienist should be ABLE to scale a pretty deep pocket gently and thoroughly, but should never try to tell you that it is common practice to do so. Tell your dentist and the office manager she told you this, it needs to be on record. Also, I would be very concerned if they had planned to do your whole mouth at once, as that would be more anesthetic than is commonly recognized as safe (unless it was just a couple of teeth per quadrant).
Now, if you were really wound up, it is possible that some of the pain was in your head (I’m not trying to be insulting here, it happens a lot and is completely natural). I have seen extremely anxious patients who, sometimes even when fully numb, have screamed and cried at the touch of a cotton swab. If you think your anxiety could be causing your pain, a sedation dentist is a good idea. I know some dentists who are real jerks, and even they don’t enjoy causing their patients pain.
Everyone’s pain threshold is different, but there is no excuse for poor technique in dentistry. Most dental procedures should be painless, the exceptions being some endodontic procedures and the occasional soft tissue graft suture removal. Now, excuse me while I climb down from my soapbox. Sorry.

No apologies necessary! I appreciate your input. I will be totally honest and state I am a very rational person except in regards to two things: dentistry and palmetto bugs. I seem to be one of those “sensitive” types but I know the difference between pain and discomfort. The hygienist was very responsive and informed the dentist immediately when I said I could not tolerate with just topical anesthesia. She came and injected me right away. They only did half of my mouth today, and the reminder will be done in morning. The lido is completely worn off and my gums are tender, as expected, but not painful. I don’t know if this is scientifically accurate, but it makes sense to me that people with thin or poor quality enamel might be more sensitive than people who are blessed with thick healthy enamel. I also was educated on the fact that I brush too aggressively and this has caused problems as well as my enamel is thin and I don’t really eat/drink many of the foods that can cause this. My regular dentist retired so I am establishing with a new practice and the dentist was very kind and sympathetic, so I feel they understand but it’s a process of “getting to know you” kind of thing if that makes sense? Thanks again for your input :)

Sorry for my semi-rant but I spent years running a perio office and the things we saw; needlessly taumatized patients, people who had been taken to the cleaners by unethical dentists, neglect by apparently well-meaning dentists who didn’t believe in giving bad news, you just wouldn’t believe. We often ended up with the “difficult” patients that nobody wanted to refer to the younger surgeons.
It really is lousy though, finally getting rid of a hygienist who was obviously incompetent, but managed to avoid any good excuse for dismissal, and having long-time patients who should know better say, “Thank goodness. She was so rough and my teeth never felt clean, but I love the rest of you and know that the doctor would hate having to fire anyone so I kept quiet.” No patient should ever keep quiet if they aren’t comfortable.
Incidentally, I have ultra-sensitive teeth with thin enamel and am a redhead so take loads of anesthetic. I have to take ibuprofen before a routine cleaning. I am sensitive. There is a difference between that and being a baby which your doctor and the staff appreciate. A baby is someone who won’t cooperate and who’s chart is marked accordingly. Don’t be a baby ;) I still think it’s odd that they tried to scale with topical. Some manufacturers try to advocate it but most offices know better. Topical doesn’t really numb the exposed dentin, which is where she should be working.

I had to have that done about 6-7 years ago, having neglected dental cleanings for several years due to a no-insurance issue. They did half my teeth at a time, and I was a bit sore for a day or so afterward, but no painkiller.

My sister had the same procedure (for the same reason) this summer, but it triggered her TMJ and afterward she went for SEVEN WEEKS unable to open her mouth more than three millimeters. She lived on soup and protein drinks and smoothies… had to stock up on straws. SHe was in a great deal of pain with her jaw.

Hope your dentist visit went much much better!

…at least, I don’t *remember* them giving me any anesthetic. I only remember some mild discomfort.

Yes, that is exactly the boat I was in: no insurance, mortgage, student loans, yada yada yada….however, I started having nightmares about my teeth rotting out of my head and then a tooth broke the other day! So, to end the nightmares, I made the appointment and was able to get a 6 month deferment on my student loans. Sorry if that’s TMI, but even with dental insurance, it doesn’t cover much. So sorry to hear about your sister! The poor woman must have been absolutely miserable :(

With all of the rain that Patricia brought this past weekend, it brought on a nice, cool breeze this morning in Texas. I felt Wild Fig &Cassis would be appropriate for today, so that is the scent I chose.
Today was not the best of Mondays for me here at work. (Imagine everything going wrong at work as soon as you walk through the door…..that’s my Monday). Hopefully the rest of the week will be better.

Yes, I went for a FB as soon as I tested it. It’s one of my top 10 perfumes! It lasts forever on me but this seems to be true for most scents I wear.

You’re a lucky girl that your scents last so well on you. I mostly smell velvety jammy rose in PHI. Do you get something similar? Not that I can still smell it at this point.

Also, have you smelled his Une Rose Chypree? If so, what do you think of that one? I only have samples of PHI and L’air du desert.

Yes, I have tried Rose Chypree but it wasn’t for me. I think I like URdK because it’s not predominantly “rosey” on me. I sampled it along with many other rose based fragrances because I found most rose perfumes atrocious (still do!) and I was trying to push my own personal boundaries. It’s just not a note that tends to work for me, unfortunately .

URdK is almost like a gourmand on me with a bit of tobacco, which is a note I do enjoy. I think the lasting power of most perfumes on my skin is related to environment as well. I live in a very warm and humid area (Florida) so I think a lot of scents hang around longer in a moist dense air. Usually two sprays is my max with one being typical, right on the chest area. When I read of people spray 4,5, or 6 sprays of anything, I am totally astounded and impressed!!

You describe this exactly as I have experienced it.
I’m not a rose fan either and because this is not a front-and-center rose scent – but I get that lovely apricot-gourmandy but not too sweet mix, I just love it.
Two sprays is my max too. It’s a heavy scent on me and I actually prefer to dab vs. spray but lately I’ve found the courage to spray. :)

Thanks Deva, Perhaps I am interpreting the apricot as jammy. I’m not a huge rose fan either but this one is really pretty.

I’m in Prodigieux Le Parfum by Nuxe and amazed it’s still going strong 8+ hrs later. Such a creamy, yummy scent. I find it very comforting and easy to wear. I’d like to try the oil but I’m not much of a body lotion/oil gal.. and I’m not sure it would be smart for use on my face.

    Happy almost Tuesday!

Emerging from a bad cold & regaining my sense of smell; Slumberhouse Vikt on one wrist, Jeke on the other…Vikt is lighter but camphoraceous enough that I should have tried in in the middle of the cols, Jeke seems to be a PNW Lonestar Memories, which is quite a nice thing. (And both drops shimmer actual green/yellow from my wrists which may not be for everyone).

The Slumberhouse line doesn’t seem to activate any lemmings for me based on notes lists, so I’ve never tried any. They just don’t seem like my sort of thing.

That said, any stuff strong enough to shimmer green & yellow is really awesome just on principle.

PdN’s website is kind of a nightmare.

I don’t know what the difference is between KMTender and KMIntense. Someone on Fragrantica says that KMTender has been discontinued, however, so maybe the Intense is its “replacement.”

Went commando to a new Nordstrom with an extended perfume area that is close to me. Not sure if that’s a good or bad thing. I guess we will see when the next damage poll comes around!
I went to test 2 fragrances only – Jo Malone Mimosa and Cardamom And Diptique Oud de Palao. I couldn’t get the Jo Malone off fast enough when I got home and in the door. The Oud Palao on the other hand, surprised me. I liked it more than I thought I would, based on some different reviews. Tam Dao and Volutes have been my Diptique friends up to now. I think I will start fresh with this sample in the morning and see how it wears through the day.

That’s always a good thing. Imagine how disappointed you would have been if you found something worthy of trying on and you had no available real estate.

JM was a scrubber for me too. That cumin! Kudos to them for trying to do something a little more bold.

That is the exact same experience I had with those same fragrances! In fact I am considering asking for a sample of the diptyque next time I am in nordstroms. The assistant that is at that counter is not very nice or generous and I am not a demanding person, so the fact that I am willing to ask her straight up means I like it! I know some folks love JM but I have not found a single one that works for me. Wait, not true! I did buy a bottle of the Oud and Bergamot dry oil spray and did thoroughly enjoy it but I think because it was an oil. I have no desire for the edt/edp.

I’m wearing vintage Helmut Lang for yet another 95 degree October day in LA. Figured it was kind of a weird choice for the heat and dust, but it’s great to smell it again (it was put away for spring and summer). Now that it’s cooled down for the evening and the supermoon is out, I’ve sprayed a bit of Diptyque’s Essences Insensées eau de parfum (the jasmine one from this year) over the last bits of the Lang. Working for me on this lovely night.
