Jim Henson was born on this day in 1936; he passed away in 1990. And Kermit did have a cologne at one time, but the advert above was an April Fools special from The Perfume Shop.
If you have a free minute, do tell us what fragrance you picked for today.
I'm wearing Terre d'Hermès.
Reminder: this Friday will be 3 Hour Tour Friday: you're going on a short afternoon cruise but who knows, you just MIGHT get stranded on a desert island. You can take up to 3 perfumes from one brand OR one perfumer. Choose your 3, wear one of them. (From a suggestion by Nozknoz)
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
I am wearing Bottega Venneta; the one that smells like an EDT of Daim Blond.
Too bad that Kermit Perfume As is a fake. It is one of the most appealing posted here in quite a while. How can I resist that smile. I would so sniff that perfume.
Presumably the scent would be lots of green notes.
I wonder how his Amphibian cologne sold?
Correction. Too bad that Kermit perfume Ad is a fake.
I used to love the Muppet show as a child. I think my favourite character was Miss Piggy and I was very fond of Fozzy the bear as well.
SOTD is Histoires de Parfums 1725 (Casanova). Trying to think which Muppet it would fit.
Gonzo? Just ask Camilla the Chicken.
Gonzo, was great too. I think he sang an ode to Camilla at some point.
I think my favorite of Gonzo’s romances was Yolanda:
http://muppet.wikia.com/wiki/Yolanda_%28cheese%29
That is very funny!
I loved the two old men – Statler & Waldorf. And Animal and the Swedish Chef…. The Muppets Most Wanted was probably the last best movie that I saw in the theater!
I loved The Muppets Most Wanted !
Thinking about it more I realise I had forgotten about a lot of the characters. The piano playing dog was very funny as well. And the Swedisch Chef, and Beaker and Kermit’s nephew was very sweet.
Oh, how do you like 1725? Do you have a bottle? It’s on my list to put in rotation this fall, to finish my sample and consider reupping…
I own a bottle, and yes I love it. It’s another take on lavender, which is one of my favourite perfume notes.
Oh good, ok yes I’ve def got to get that one in the rotation. I remember thinking the amber was very nice, gently sweet and medium-sheer–and with the other elements, 1725 felt like a more interesting, niche twist on what Gucci Guilty did quite nicely (if not especially inventively) in a mainstream version.
I don’t know, maybe that’s a weird comparison since they’re composed in totally different registers… it’s really just the amber that linked them for me!
I’ve never tried Gucci Guilty. To me 1725 is mostly about lavender and anise.
1725 is one of my favourites in the line, and I have a few of the 14ml mini’s which theoretically should do, but there’s a couple I wouldnt mind more of 🙂
Ooh, 14ml mini–I need to look into this! 🙂
Parfum1 and The Perfume Shoppe both had them last time i looked.. $36 each
Encre Noire all day, and now post-work, post-shower, tragically watching Survivor, in LUST Lust.
Oh, wonder if they’d layer nicely?
Lust is da jasmine bomb! The tribe has spoken.
Ha! And, indeed!
Perthgirl! Not sure if you saw my (very late) response to your message yesterday. Thank you so much for such a detailed analysis of Calligraphy Rose vs. La Fille de Berlin, AND for even remembering that I wondered what CR smelled like! That was so sweet of you.
I do have a bottle of LFdB, and now that I know that CR is somewhat similar, I am at a diminished risk of buying a bottle of the latter blind. So again – THANK YOU!
It’s what happens when the party starts so late for me over here. I stay up to comment when I can, then I go to bed and in the morning the party is over and everyone has left.. lol..
So i did see your request a week or so ago, Ive just been waiting til I ‘saw’ you again 🙂
Robin, you have inspired me and I am now wearing Terre d’Hermes as well.
Last time I wore this (I have a tiny bottle of the perfume) I had a doctor’s appointment, and the nurse practitioner who saw me loved it so much that she asked me to write down the name so she could buy some for herself (although she was a bit surprised to find that its actually marketed for men). Such a nice compliment.
I considered wearing Terre parfum this morning too, but decided on more vetiver with Encre Noire. Because of the vetiver nest yesterday 🙂
I forget to wear it!
I’ve tried all three variations of Terre d’Hermés, and I give up: they’re not me and never will be. I was so sure I would like the parfum, too.
I really do like the Vetiver variation of Bel Ami, though.
Robin- you smell great!
Shalimar ode a la Vanille is my scent of the day
Vanilla Bliss!!!
And so do you!
Apparently there’s a Miss Piggy perfume as well. One of my sisters is a huge fan, so I might have to find some for her.
Today I’m wearing Chanel No. 22. Yesterday was Yom Kippur and I couldn’t wear any perfume. As soon as I got home last night, I put on some Jungle L’Elephant, because that’s what I was craving during the day. (That, and a chai.)
Hope you had a good holiday. Your mention of chai makes me crave one. Recently had a pumpkin chai at Argo tea. Yum yum
Kenzo Elephant is a gem
Yes it is! I have a big decant that will probably last me forever but I like the elephant bottle, too.
It is one of the few perfumes that I hated initially. Then tried again, still hate it. Then tried again several years later, and suddenly smelled what everyone who loves it is smelling! The AHA! moment
Elephant is liquid dessert!
I’m wearing Royall Spyce. Carnation is not listed as a note, but this is pretty close to being a carnation cologne (to paraphrase someone from Fragrantica). It’s a bit watered down compared to the first one I purchased (and drained), but it’s still very good.
My favorite muppets are probably Grover and Kermit.
Love Kermit. Love the old Oscar the Grouch – and Gonzo. Elmo annoys the pants off me.
Elmo is very annoying — so saccharine.
Agree. Elmo is the Jar Jar Binks of the Muppets
Is there really only ONE female muppet character? I adore Miss Piggy but she’s the uber-stereotypical va-va-va-voom female. How about some more female characters who are just simply characters, not sexy? Let’s go for 50/50 male / female and maybe even ambiguous gender while we’re at it… 🙂
There’s Janice who was part of the Muppets band.
She’s so groovy!
And Prairie Dawn
Another fan of the old Oscar the Grouch! I watched Sesame Street while babysitting long ago, and with my daughter not quite as long ago. I could relate to Oscar lol.
I used to hate Elmo too, but both my kids LOVE him, so now I’m kind of fond of the little guy.
My favourite was always Grover. My favourite part of Sesame Street (early 80’s) was SuperGrover. I thought it was hilarious for some reason. And Snuffy when he was still allowed to be an invisible friend.
Snuffy and Grover! Memories….
I used to have a SuperGrover stuffed doll when I was a kid a LONG time ago!
What a fun April Fools joke! I love the muppets, especially Beaker. He said so little (all of which was incomprehensible) but was so expressive. The chef also cracked me up with his “bork!” I guess I only really liked the characters that didn’t speak any real words 😛
I’m schlepping it in the office today after being all fancy yesterday for the co-op meeting. Gave myself a liberal dosing of Samsara to match my tee-and-jeans mode.
Samsara is great! Are you wearing the current version?
Yes, I bought the bottle in the past 6 months.
I love Breaker (and Professor Honeydew) and Samsara. It’s one of the few with listed sandalwood note that actually smells like sandalwood to me instead if some wood melange.
The non-verbal communication of the Muppets really knocks me out. Watched the premiere of the new show this week and while certain of the long-running jokes now grate on me (really, still with the fat jokes?), I have to say, those darn puppets totally hit me in the gut! I’m not crying, I just have really localized allergies to feelings.
Skarb by Humiecki and Graef. My latest obsession.. Love it to bits.
I so would love a Kermit perfume! Rather more realistically, today is Infusion d’Iris, which feels quite work appropriate.
I’m sampling a smear of Ghoroob (or however the heck you spell it) this morning. It’s really gorgeous from a distance of about six inches, but up close there’s a clean musk sharpness that is terribly jarring to me. I’m also surprised that it reminds me a bit of one of those perfume oils, purchased at a bookstore, I wore as a teenager. Now I wish I still had the little bottle of Spring Flowers? Springtime? whatever it was called. Ghoroob is certainly better quality than my old friend of nerdy bookstore-lurking days and I’m glad I finally got a sample. I was expecting more orange blossom than I’m getting though, which is okay with me because I sometimes have a hard time with it.
My husband is a huge fan of the Muppets. I was more of a Dark Crystal and Labyrinth girl. I remember actually having nightmares about Fraggles; they creeped me out. I do adore Kermit, of course, and Oscar the Grouch. In fact, I never had a security blanket but I did have an old t-shirt with the trash can denizen on it that I had to cuddle with to get to sleep when I was little. I wonder if Mom still has it stashed someplace? I think it was an old undershirt that she had painted Oscar on for me, but I’m not sure anymore.
Ghroob fro Arabian Oud? Orange blossom? I could not wear it as it was TOO soapy. The bottle was beautiful but I had to give it away.
Yep, the Arabian Oud one. I admit I sampled only a tiny bit for fear of the orange blossom I had heard of (I think, maybe I’m getting my reviews confused?), but the similarity to “Egyptian Musk” is what got me.
Actually, now that it’s mellowed to a skin scent it is lovely and soapy – in the sense that it smells like a really nice guest soap my grandmother always had out but I wasn’t allowed to use. I’m not getting the awful, sharp thing I think of as soapiness in perfume. I really wish I had a better-defined vocabulary for scent.
Labyrinth and Dark Crystal were my favorites! I liked the Fraggles too.
Fraggles scared me too!
Me three! Glad I am not the only one 😉
The Dark Crystal scared the daylights out of me! But I did like the Fraggles, even with the odd Madame Trash-heap. (“The trash-heap has spoken… Nerrrrrr!”)
I’m wearing Demeter Beeswax today, since yesterday I wore such a nice spicy floral. I wanted something a little different, and although it is still hot outside, I am now in the mood for sweet, spicy, ambery, etc. after a summer of citrus and aromatics and light florals.
Oh I haven’t smelled this one yet–lately enamored with the real-life smell of melted beeswax, so I’ve definitely got to track this down!
Inspired by the talk of it yesterday, I generously spritzed Prada’s Infusion d’Iris.
Joy, inspired by Angela’s recent Big Five post. Lovely stuff, I can totally understand why this is considered a classic.
Loooooove Joy. So much that when I look at my bottle I have the urge to drink it; which is insane, I know
I don’t have any on hand, but her post totally made me want to track down some Joy too.
It is worth hunting down the Extrait if you’ve never tried it 🙂
I’m wearing The Afternoon of a Faun – I’ve like it since it was launched and I don’t know anything that smells similar.
Another one I really need to get around to testing.
Today is a cool, fall, Serge Lutens kind of day, so:
Chergui pre-shower
Un Bois Vanille post-shower
Just enough of the Chergui sticks around to give some bite to the warm, sweet vanilla, and I’ve never tried it but I am going to have to layer those two.
Sounds like heaven!
This really does sound very good.
I would love a Miss Piggy perfume – over the top in every way I’m sure!
SOTD: Givenchy Ambre Tiger …. because I have worn an amber oriental every single day this week. And, tomorrow, I will, too!
This Givenchy is really nice. I quite love it. I have a decant but am thinking of a bigger decant. Of course I have so many ambers I hardly need another drop. But Givenchy Ambre Tiger is nice and fills the rather empty field of what I consider to be easy going and Office Friendly ambers. I would like to try more from this Givenchy exclusive range.
Oh too fun, thinking of a Miss Piggy perfume!

All the dreams I didn’t even know I had just came true.
I’m starting a day early on the weekend – and tomorrow’s community challenge – because I really am taking a short afternoon cruise to a desert island! Well, O.K., I’m stretching the truth just a bit. I’m actually taking a 15-minute ferry boat ride to an island – that counts, doesn’t it? and the island I’m going to – Mackinac – isn’t a desert island but it does have lots of yummy Michigan desserts, so that counts, too, right? And I didn’t have to think twice about the scents I’d bring: Hermes Eau des Merveilles will be accompanying me and, if I were bringing three fragrances, the others would be two additional Merveilles, the Elixir and L’Ambre. I’m looking forward to the last camping trip of the year in gorgeous weather – and the Merveilles – restoring my sense of ‘wonder’ that has been missing during several very stressful weeks.
Wishing everyone a wonder-filled and wonderful weekend ahead!
That all sounds so lovely!
You’re not too far from where I grew up. I’m so jealous! Hopefully the Eau de Merveilles will balance out the smells of fudge and horse manure. 🙂 Have a great weekend!
I loved the muppets! The first (and last, and only) fanfic I ever wrote was a muppets episode when I was 10. So may great characters. I’m not sure I could have picked a favorite then, and certainly can’t now.
Wearing 24 Fauborg today, for effortless elegance. I think I’m discovering that ambers are a good scent for that transitional time between summer and fall. Probably also suitable for fall to winter.
24 Fauborg is classic!
SOTD = Bvlgari Black
WFH today and tomorrow to avoid the Pope and U.N. General Assembly-related craziness.
The Muppets bring nice memories – it was the show that my grandfather watched with the grandkids every Sunday after dinner. My grandparents’ house had room air-conditioners and invariably, one of the grandkids would sidle over to the vent and all my grandfather had to do was clear his throat and the grandkid knew he or she was busted. I, ahem, got my share of the throat-clearing 🙂
I also remembered where I was when news of Jim Henson’s death was announced — I was at the hotel in Orlando waiting to leave to go to Disneyworld. Sad but he left a legacy.
I remember too. I was so sad that a man who was so beloved could die all alone…
In Oriental Lounge this morning, and one vote for Statler and Waldorf!
Oriental Lounge is a beauty. It’s unusual and fascinating, too. There’s more to it than you might suspect when first sniffing.
I was disappointed when I tried it in the summer, but it looks like it will be a nice, cold-weather office scent.
Wearing Marni Spice today. I’m so glad I took a chance and bought it unsniffed. The spice is cool with a touch of sweetness, and the scent is light enough for the office, but still noticeable (though I wouldn’t mind some additional strength). I don’t think it’s too masculine or feminine, nor is it too dark or too sunny. I like the original Marni, but this version speaks to me more. This is just a really good go-to pretty scent. I’m already thinking my 1-oz bottle might not be enough.
Ok I’m officially jealous 🙂
Same!
Ditto!!
I blind-bought Marni Spice too! They are definitely both Marni, but I agree that the light, fresh spices just add a bit more interest.
Ok. So today I’m wearing Chanel no.19 – this is significant for two reasons. The first is that I like to wear it to work when I’m expecting a bit of a challenging day, I feel it makes me stronger. The second is that I haven’t worn it since getting negative remarks from the last time I wore it to work.
So. Today, instead of using the dropper (more hygienic so the juice in the bottle doesn’t get contaminated) like Bois de Jasmin suggests, I dabbed in the conventional way and I must say that it works better in terms of projection, low which is typical of parfum concentration.
I’m sure its all in my head, but I feel energized and ready for anything even though it has been a long day today work-wise.
Yes, I need to adjust my use of parfum concentration to not scent bomb my colleagues out of the office. I don’t think I’ve ever sprayed a parfum strength fragrance.
Glad you’re feeling ready for anything!
I use the stopper or my fingers to dab my no 19 extrait. I’m going to keep that bottle all to myself so I don’t worry about contamination. It’s more fun to handle it! I get lovely sillage from mine too – keeps low to the body.
Cant believe there were negative remarks! Boo to them!
SOTD: Songes body oil topped off with CDG Luxe Champaca to balanceout my rather masculine/militant ooutfit today.
I would love to have that ad as a poster. I have to admit that the opening scene of Kermit playing the banjo, singing The Rainbow Connection in the movie makes me teary every time.
I love that too. It is a huge movie memory from my childhood.
Me to!
The mention of Jim Henson, Kermit and banjo’s reminded me of a Jim Henson movie my sister and I loved. I had to look it up and watched a bit on youtube. Hilarious! It’s Emmet Otter’s Jugband Christmas. Ah the memories!! Lol
Working from home today so wearing Coco as it is rainy and just plain nasty out.
Coco is perfect for bad weather! Cozy and elegant all together.
Coco is like a beautiful, brown, elegant blanket !
It was fun seeing Kermit’s picture today. I’d say he’s my favorite Muppet. (I like frogs.)
I’m wearing CdG Play Red.
SotD: Voyage d’Hermes, thanks to Robin’s Terre d’Hermes which reminded me to try something different today. Plus it smells a bit green.
Confession: when I was a bitty little thing I told my mom I wished Kermit were my boyfriend because I would never karate chop him like Miss Piggy.
I would buy his cologne, too. It would be aquatic and green with a gentlemanly hint of bug juice.
I always loved Kermit and was always annoyed at Miss Piggy. Love is blind.
That’s sooo cute! Very sweet and considerate of you, even at such a young age, to be aware of poor mistreated Kermy and wanting better for him. Bless 🙂
Kermit is such a cutie! So funny that he had his own cologne – ha!
SOTD for me is Alaia. Such a unique scent, on me a soft leathery violet musk. Good longevity too.
Interesting – I’m very curious about Alaia, ever since Luca Turin raved about it on Style Arabia. He made is sound pretty weird, though.
I’m really torn about Alaia. I love the body lotion, and when I use it, I can then smell the interesting hot stone/dry linen notes in the perfume. Without the body lotion, though, I find the perfume to be an instant, persistent violet that is vaguely irritating and disturbing, like hearing an ugly voice in a conversation two rooms over. When all that calms down, it is very pretty, but that takes a couple of hours on me. Hmmm–doesn’t really sound as though I’m likely to buy it, does it? It’s fair to say, though, that other people I’ve been with have really enjoyed the perfume and bought small bottles.
I tried it too- before reading LT’s review. I loved the strange, spicy, sweet top notes, but it morphed into teeth-achingly sweet fruitiness. It was strange enough that i kept sniffing that pretty blotter for days afterward, but at the end of the day just too sweet and mainstream. However- i have been known to change my mind on an occasion or two so maybe I’ll try again some time 🙂
Oh, now I wish I’d given the tester I just passed a longer sniff. Next time.
How fitting! I just watched the first episode of the new Muppets show last night. It was quite funny, and different – like 30 Rock meets the Office with puppets. Jim Henson grew up in my town and went to my high school, which now has an auditorium named after him, so I always felt a special connection with the Muppets, etc. even though I never knew him.
SOTD is AG Le Chevrefeuille. Now that I finally have a big bottle, I’ve been wearing it all the time this summer. Summer may be over, but we are having more hot weather today. Maybe not the best day to work at home since there is only AC in the bedroom!
Le Chev is a very lovely citrus floral combo. I like it on the hottest of days. We’re having nice unseasonably warm weather where I am too so it’s kind of messing up my fall fragrance rotation! I want to watch the new Muppets, but I forgot about it. Note to self for the next episode!
SOTD is JM English Pear & Freesia which reminds me of the smell in my mom’s backyard at the beginning of fall, when overripe pears are laying on the ground.
I wear that a lot this time of year. It is good combined with JM Orange Blossom or Nectarine Blossom lotion.
My SOTD is Tom Ford’s Noir for Women.
I loved Oscar the Grouch. And Cookie Monster! And Bert and Ernie!
SOTD is VCA California Reverie. It’s still summer here. Had one of those mornings when I stared at the closet and didn’t want to wear any of my summer clothes. Forced myself to put on something cheery and bright; soon enough it will be time for the russets and browns… but not yet.
SOTD is Etro Shaal Nur b/c it’s been too long and I wanted mellow but interesting. It’s perfect for our cool mornings and hot days.
I love the Muppets! When I think of a fragrance for Kermit, it must be something like Eau Sauvage or Cristalle edt – some really seriously gorgeous swamp water, lol!
Nice choices for Kermit. I was also thinking Silences.
Yep, nice and green and damp. Maybe even a nice dark vetiver. Far too good for Miss Piggy to appreciate! (Maybe she’d be in Versace Blonde, or Juicy Couture)
Just seeing Kermit instantly made me happy! How I loved the Muppets growing up.
Wearing Chanel Eau Premiere today, which is another thing that brings me a smile 🙂
I wore that yesterday. That seems to be one scent I keep coming back to this year. I must like it!
SOTD is Eau Claire des Merveilles.
I’m wearing Jacomo Silences today. Its clear and sunny here, with a nice breeze. It seems like a Jacomo Silences kind of day.
I love Grover also. I notice he has a few fans here. When my kids were little, I’d watch Sesame Street with them. Grover had a skit where he’d run back and forth from the camera, and yell “near” when he was close, then he’d run away, and yell “far!!” My son thought that was the funniest thing in the world. It would always get giggles from him. And me.
Jacomo Silences – great idea!
Hmm, this might work as a poll: which perfumes yell “near” and which yell “far”?
I think he did near, far, over, under, and through!
Loved Grover.
I loved that skit! Lol! I think part of the reason I loved him was how his skinny little arms flopped about everywhere. For some reason that just cracked me up!
My Aveda hairspray is competing with my Bronze Goddess perfume. Not a combo i recommend.
I spayed my hair, then a minute later chose BG. Not even sure if the BG bottle is good anymore, cause everything smells like hairspray to my nose now.
Possibility i over did it on the BG, as a result. I’ll ask my office mate when i get to work.
BG smelling fine, once the hairspray died down. Phew!
Sadly, I am too old to have experienced the Muppets as a child and being childless, never saw them as a parent either, so I only know a few of them. However, I have read some interviews with the characters that were very funny.
This morning could be called “crisp” here, and I wanted sandalwood so I’m wearing Champagne de Bois. Just lovely. This weekend’s community project has me torn–I have lots to choose from!
Miel de Bois today, in all its honey animalic glory!
You smell absolutely wonderful!
I need a fragrance called Sans Ennui… Can’t muster getting anything done and I have no work just now, so… Reading in bed and drinking good coffee.
Wearing Ambre 114, with my pillows scented with Bois d’Ascese.
Last night I tried my blind buy small decant of AbdesSalaam Attar Patchouli. Initial blast is similar to Aromatics Elixir, lots of resiny notes… But it fades much quicker than I expected from its powerful opening. This is a dirty patchouli, very fun. But not for folks who don’t like patchouli!
I’ve discovered I love patchouli, so this is another for my list, thank you.
I envy you your quiet day: sounds fabulous to me. Enjoy it all!
One of my favorite patchouli scents is Le Labo’s Ylang 49…I really like patchouli as well. From the dirty-dirtiest to the new molecular distilled versions…
Huh. I don’t think of Ylang 49 as a patchouli but now that you mention it, I’ll have to re-sniff.
I enjoy many of his perfumes and have tried some of the attars, but not Patchouli. I did not like them as much as some of the more complex blends. Patchouli sounds interesting, though.
Which of his fragrances did you like? Someone mentioned him on NST a while back and I was intrigued. But the only place it seems I can find his perfumes is on STC.
I especially like Mecca Balsam, Sharif, Attar Maulana, and Amber Chocolate. I think I also like Tabac, but I might be mixed up about my many samples. Robin likes Tawaf especially, IIRC. I like it but find it very fleeting.
You can order a wide range of sizes, including samples, on his website:
profumo.it
The postage may be higher than for STC, but he tends to toss in some additional samples.
And his samples are pretty hefty (5.5ml) so they last a long while. My favorites are Tabac, Amber Oud, Samurai, and Oakmoss.
I have some of his samples to swap, will shoot you an email.
My hands-down favourite is Persona, from the private collection range. It’s a vetiver, but whereas most are grey-green or dark green with a hint of citrus, Persona is a bright peridot yellow/green. I’ve gotten lots of compliments wearing it actually.
And Tawaf. Jasmine bomb, but not hugely long-lived.
Longtime patchouli lover! I keep looking for something that’s more or less a tamed ’60s patchouli, just enough so it doesn’t offend others.
Have you tried Reminiscence Patchouli? Pixel gifted me her decant and it has a good dose of hippyish patchouli. I really like it and great for fall. Also Nasomatto Hindu Grass which is lovely and more refined. I’m thinking of getting Demeter Patchouli which is 100% natural as a layering agent. It quite nice.
Wonderful suggestion, thank you. I can feel myself shifting into blind buy mode already! It sounds like just the thing.
Les nereides Patchouli Antique is also a good, earthy patchouli, i blind bought it from ebay as its sopposed to be quite similar to Reminiscence, which i couldn’t find in the UK.
Luca Turin said it smelt like ‘..cold smellof the damp underside of garden stone in a sweet woody setting, making for a folktale of a fragrance, rustic and bizarre’. i adore it!
1969, because I tried Jul et Mad Stilettos on Lex yesterday and wanted to compare. I think I like 1969 better, but Stilettos is worth another try.
1969 has, to me, just the right amount of patchouli, which might restrict slightly the occasions when one would want to wear it.
Message to my husband:
Hello, love. You know that afternoon cruise I went on…well, I’m stranded on Friday Island, but please don’t worry because there is an oodle of tuatua and perfectly clean fresh water. Also, I have my Kindle and Black Cashmere with me, so my immediate survival needs are supplied. The tides and the reef being what they are, I can see I’m going to be here overnight, so tomorrow morning I’ll use my little sample of 19 to cheer myself up after I wash in the stream–it’s freezing! When you come to rescue me, I would be very grateful if you would bring my toothbrush, my green coat (the silk scarf should be with it) and my bottle of 31 Rue Cambon so that we can go straight out to lunch and eat anything delicious that isn’t a beastly fish or anything else that originated in the sea. Don’t forget to give Dakkie his 6 Temptations or you’ll get no peace at all. Best love, WD.
Afterthought: if you can’t find 31, Cuir de Russie will do just as well.
Funnily enough, your missive reminded me of a letter I sent to my parents when I was an exchange student in Tunisia over 30 years ago…..that they still tease me about. I was having an amazing time, but I wrote them explicit instructions about sending me a bar of I. Magnin’s blue gardenia soap. Gosh I. Magnin’s is long gone and Tunisia is battling for her soul.
Sometimes all we need is just one little thing to get us through….even the amazing times can be overwhelming. I don’t know the Blue Gardenia soap, but I think I can imagine it, and I can see exactly how it would have helped.
Tunisia would’ve been beautiful 30yrs ago. How lucky for you to spend a decent amount of time there- it sounds wonderful!
You are cracking me up! Can you write a book of those please?
Notes to my husband? I promise you, it’s mostly stuff like”Pse buy broccoli on yr way home.” Or, more ominously, “Yr mother rang. Pse call back.”
I seem to have gone on a testing tear! Two more jasmines, Atelier Jasmin Angelique and VC&A California Reverie. Would bet the farm most perfumistas will prefer the VC&A, much more complex and “serious” perfume, and yet, didn’t quite suit me. (Agreed with Lucas’s review that that it begins “very light, chilly and aromatic”, in moments “very clean and a bit soapy”, but, he concluded by buying a bottle immediately: https://chemistinthebottle.wordpress.com/2014/08/06/van-cleef-arpels-california-reverie/ My wallet is relieved I did not feel so moved.)
Meanwhile, initially the Atelier did not agree with my skin at all, but 10 minutes later smelled completely different, and utterly charming. Maybe too charming? I’m kinda suspicious of such charm! It doesn’t have much in the way of depth or complexity, so would I get totally sick of it if I had a bottle? (Like the pop song that’s an earworm in the first 30 seconds, but unlistenable within the week?) Also, does it resemble another fragrance I’m presently unable to name? Maybe one of the Marc Jacobs hits? So many questions! If anyone else has smelled this, please set me straight! 🙂
Just for fun, here’s an essay that is, itself, quite charming!, on the subject of charm in pop music, from one of my favorite writers: http://www.theguardian.com/books/2008/apr/26/popandrock
Theorema. Perfect for fall, perfect for days of not knowing what to wear (or do).
I’m planning to wear Theorema tomorrow. Either Theorema or Alahine. I’m getting stingy with my Theorema because it’s only about 1/4 bottle left but I need to wear it before it evaporates!
I was a fan of Cookie Monster when I was a kid. I am also a fan of cookies.
I am wearing Dior Homme.
COOKIES!
Baking! I’m working at home today…I could make Anzac biscuits!
I heard the guy who voices Cookie Monster on the radio the other day, it was NPR’S Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me. Fun interview 🙂
wearing a scented combination today- Diptyque Tam Dao layered with miller harris Rose noir. The Sandlewood of Tam Dao tames the sweetness of Rose noir, & the sillage is beautiful, it is one of the few perfumes that’s ever been noticed/ complimented on- someone said i can smell nagshampa incense? [i hope thats good, never smelt it] but i think it smells good, which is the important thing!, and i was so pleased that someone could smell my perfume, as my hubby has a really poor sense of smell, which is a constant source of frustration!
Oh, I haven’t smelled the Miller Harris but even just from the names, that sounds like a wonderful pairing. I’m sure the incense remark was a compliment!
Bummer about the husband’s sniffer–maybe we could swap family members sometime? Several of mine have verrrrrry sensitive senses of smell, to the extent that they feel oppressed by all but my very lightest fragrances. My mother told me she liked my perfume for the first time in ages this week: the Hermes Jardin de Monsieur Li, in Robin’s words, “even more soft-spoken” than “the most gauzy and transparent Jean-Claude Ellena fragrance you can” think of!! So I would be delighted to swap occasionally for someone who won’t mind my Tauers! 🙂
My dear one also has a fairly poor sense of smell, Mayfly and I agree that it can be frustrating! The only time his sense of smell is better than mine is with brown boronia, which apparently smells gorgeous, and so strong that (so the story goes) settlers sailing to Australia knew they were only a day or so away from land because they could smell boronia on the breeze. The story is probably apocryphal, but certainly, my husband crows about my inability to pick up more than a faint lemony odour, and then only if I push my face right in to the bush! However, he does make an effort to comment intelligently when I stick my wrist under his nose…he doesn’t wear any scent himself, though, not even to please me.
But would he notice if it were stealthily applied?
Just sayin’.
Must think this over…deep thought ensues chez Waterdragon.
I love Nag Champa! It is usually a mixture of champa (fragrant white flowers similar to plumeria/ frangipani) and sandalwood…
Mmmmm. I like nag champa too. Might try layering the CDG Champaca with sandalwood EO…
I tried Loree Rodkin Gothic II because it’s meant to smell of Nag Champa- and yep- it does indeed!
That sounds terribly frustrating C.H! my hubby is very sweet, and does try to be enthusiastic, i’m trying to teach him to differentiate notes, but its an uphill struggle!- they do say a change is as good as a rest,so lets swap! [forgot to mention my mum is quite anti perfume tho, & often feighns mini asthma attacks, if she thinks i’m wearing any perfume!]
The miller harris is lovely, but i probably wouldn’t have paid full price, it was on sale. I love Fille de Berlin and portrait of a lady more, but still love it.
Ha, we should have a reality television program like Wife Swap, except, it’s entirely focused on having a new audience for one’s perfume collection 🙂
I know just what you mean about the Miller Harris, and feel the same way about my partial bottle of Aerin Evening Rose–I like it and am glad to have it (I think I’ll wear it a lot now that the weather’s cooling), but it’s not so special that I would have paid retail. It’s a crowded field, the genre of darker roses! I’ve got to try Fille de Berlin tho.
Hee hee, good idea!
Fille de Berlin is really lovely, and i think, very easy to wear, as sumptuous but not too sweet.
Just read article on charm in pop music, vampire weekend one of my favourite bands!, interesting perspective too.
Oh, so glad you liked it! 🙂
I’d never heard of Brown boronia, Waterdragon, do they smell anything like hops?, they smell lemony too.
Oh its sad that you’re beloved wont wear fragrance, but its nice that he will at least converse upon the subject, which he knows is so dear to you’re heart!
I honestly don’t know what they smell like. Gorgeous, according to my triumphant husband, but I don’t think he’s ever broken the smell down for me. My mother told me they were intensely fragrant, so maybe like daphne? I just can’t help. Maybe Perthgirl would know, because they’re Australian natives.
Perthgirl reporting for boronia input!
Ok, it has been a long time since I’ve encountered a boronia bush, but for an unattractive brown shrub they smell delightful. A bit sweet, and well, pretty and floral. But subtle. I used to smell them a lot, because avid and successful gardener my dad is in general, he just couldnt keep boronia alive. So there were lots of new ones arriving.. Lol.
There’s a cheap pharmacy perfume called Boronia which I used to always sniff waiting for it to actually smell like boronia, but not even close.
I realise after all this I have shed no light on the subject at all! Lol. But, it is spring, and it is nursery time soon, so if I meet a boronia I’ll take good notes and report back 🙂
Thank you, Perthgirl. I’m quite hopeless, because pretty much unable to smell anything boronia-related. I wonder if that story about the scent wafting out over the sea is true? Nice if it is.
The boronia in my garden smells like fresh raspberry jam…if you can imagine home made jam, the scent wafting through the house….just waiting for scones and cream.
The mimosa tree in our street is going insane with yellow flowers …such an amazing year. And I also have a vanilla tree ….don’t know it’s botanical.name but it looks like a wattle…and it is also in flower and smells of warm custard.
Wish I was a bee!
Thanks Perthgirl!
I wish I were at your place, Kanuka. Your garden sounds like perfumed heaven! I can’t wait to go back to the heartlands and have a scented garden.
Working my way through the Unreleased sample pack from Tigerlily with Ineke’s Hello, Stranger. I like milky coffee suede and I hope this one does get released eventually
I absolutely loved wearing Si Lolita Lempicka today. I have a mini and can just imagine how nice it would be with a full spray application.
This evening I am wearing Benjoin Bohème from Diptyque. To me it smells like Mitzah-lite and is a great and much less expensive alternative to Le Labo’s Benjoin 19. I’m looking forward to wearing it in cooler temperatures although it’s quite nice on this mild, mid 60’s evening here in San Francisco. I’m much less taken with the bottle and packaging in person, c’mon Diptyque at these prices please step it up a bit, but I quite like the bottle cap.
Also a big muppet lover. Huge Miss Piggy fan. I have something of a collection of Miss Piggy things, including a book called “Miss Piggy’s Guide to Life” from the 1980’s (I think) that is a total ode to being fabulous. Not sure how I’d scent her, but it would have to be a big floral or a big oriental, I think.
Or Femme?
