Monday scent of the day 8/31

Posted by Robin on 31 August 2015 144 Comments

School

Last day of August! And where I live, it's the first day of school. Do tell us what fragrance you're wearing today.

I'm running behind this morning, and haven't even picked a scent yet. I will chime in later!

Reminder: this Friday, 9/4, will be Back to School Friday...wear a perfume that says 'back to school' to you, or that says you mean business, or ....?

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

In Bois Blond today- I think it faded away with in 15 minutes.
Good luck to all the parents out there who are sending their little ones off to school! Hope they are safe and have a good year ahead

That’s about right. Bois Blonde is nice, but I only wear it at night because it fades so quickly.

Not at all. I like Atelier, but their colognes never last on me. I get a couple hours out of the heavy ones like Ambre New and Vanille Incensee, but that’s about it.

I get several hours of smelling good from Bois Blonds but it definitely settles down quickly and stays close after the first hour. I guess that’s why I like it especially in the evening.

Ohhh… Look how early I am. At this rate I am going to challenge myself to be the first commentator. With my son leaving at 6:45 AM, there is hope in this new year.

No perfume yet, but my sample of Rose Privee is giving me come hither looks.

    GOOD MORN’ Y’ALL!

School starts tomorrow here and we are probably like that meme with the mom jumping joyously while the kids mope.
I am wearing Tubereuse Coutoure. I used to think I could decide between Carnal Flower, Tub.Criminelle and Tub.Coutoure and I really can’t. I like them all and each has something the others don’t.

Good morning! Today I’m wearing Roads Bitter End, which would have qualified for the “Fools Rush In” day a few weeks ago. It was apparently inspired by the western region of Ireland, a “beautiful barren place of isolation.” I put it on today because I’m wearing a very 90’s-esque dress, and it seems sort of fresh and androgynous, if a little bleak.

In other news, I’m attending two weddings on back-to-back weekends this fall, and I’m curious about what scents one might wear as a wedding guest. I was at a wedding in May and wore Flowerhead. I’m thinking Bitter End is not a good choice ;). Does anyone have an opinion on this?

I’ve got the back-to-back weddings this fall too.
I’m thinking I might go with my latest infatuation (well, as of this paste Sat. anyway), Ambre 114 by Histoires de Parfums. It is an amber that isn’t too over the top and yet, great for fall temps.

Now to find a new dress!

Today is the last day of winter. (yaay!) Officially anyway. It’s rainy and cold and will be so for a few more days.
This morning I wore Grand Amour (Goutal) because I was craving it last night at bedtime but didnt want to turn the light back on to find it..
Then after I decided on Mitsouko. Vintage edp and current edt. Very unlike me! But I enjoyed it for the seemingly short time they lasted :)

Sampling Red Cattleya from Oly.pic Orchids, a rather fruity floral. I am still a little ahead on my sampling– I have tried more samples since I moved than I have acquired but my package from Tigerlily should arrive tomorrow which includes the 10 samples from their Unreleased series. Someday I will get through my hundreds of samples backlog (assuming I never set foot in a perfume store again and live somewhere without internet access)

Exactly. You should walk past tables in that dreary office many times to leave some wonderful sillage.

This reminds me when an kind colleague of mine moves about in my lab that has all these horrendous smells, she seems to leave a wonderful green floral trail that lifts my spirit. I have to ask her on my last day what the juice is!

The kids don’t go back to school until next Tuesday, so to boost my morale (it’s been a looooong summer) I’m wearing Prada Candy. It tends to wear fairly light on me, so will be perfect for hot weather.

Amouage Journey Woman. I’m on my third decant of it and can’t quite commit enough to buy a FB. When I first put it on, I love it, but it has some element that makes me feel slightly nauseous. ?? Kind of a love-hate relationship here. I think it’s the honey I don’t like.

I treated myself to a shopping trip yesterday and picked up some new clothes, Terracotta bronzer, and a rollerball I found on sale. Of course, when I got home, I found out the rollerball had about 1/3 of the juice missing (even though it wasn’t a tester). Not sure if it’s worth picking a fight over a “final sale” item, or if I should just get over it, since I haven’t finished a rollerball in years.

Anyway, wearing Marni today and feeling lovely!

I’ve had rollerballs that evaporated quite a bit in their unopened boxes. Might be worth sealing over, or transferring to another container. Was yours by any chance from Piguet? Mine were.

That’s a good point. The scent smells fine, so I think I’ll just seal it up and be grateful I don’t have to worry about using up all 10 mL. :)

Still blind sampling, so I don’t know what I’m wearing. The last two were both Caron scents for some reason. Montaigne was rather surprising, but then far too sweet for me. Nuit de Noel was unsurprising, unsurprisingly.

School started here on the 14th (at least a week/ten days earlier than prior years, but the new policy is to get all of first semester wrapped up and exams finished before Christmas break), and even The CEO went back to teaching at Va Tech last Monday.

However, he’s home sick today and pretty whiny about it. I got him set up on the couch with a blankie and Tylenol and Gatorade, and a movie in the DVD player, just as if he were eight years old. :) Hey – comfort is comfort no matter how old you are.

Now I’m off to do some laundry and hang it on the line outside. Weather’s gorgeous – sunny, with fluffy clouds, and I’m in Iris Poudre.

School started mid-August here, but my youngest has just graduated from college (!!) so I’m somewhat out of the loop now. I love the back to school time of year, though – September is such a beautiful month.

I’m wearing my new sample of I miss Violet from The Different Company. I absolutely love it and wish it weren’t so expensive. Neither violet nor leather is a favorite note for me, but I love what I get from the notes here: green, slightly powdery soft clean suede. I’ll have to see if I can win the lottery soon so I can buy a bottle. This could be a signature scent.

You’ve intrigued me with this one!

I’m looking forward to having all of mine out of college, in terms of the bank account… not really looking forward to having them all out of the house. It’s been bad enough sending my firstborn off. She’s half done, but Kid #2 will be ready for college right after she finishes, with Kid #3 two years after that. Argh.

Yes, it’s an adjustment that I am still working through. I miss them. The oldest went to college in 2007, then two years later, the middle son, and two years later the youngest. The youngest said to me after his spring break this year (his senior year) – “now you’re really an empty nester. That was my last spring break at home.” I’m sure he had no idea what a thud hit my heart.

Thank goodness for wonderful friends. Including perfume friends!

Leaving on a month long trip to my new home (South of France) and had to figure out which one scent I could live with for a month straight. I needed it to be versatile and had it narrowed down to 3. Ultimately, I chose Pour un Homme (Caron), as Cuir de Lancome is untested on the SO and I know he dislikes vetiver (????!!!!!), so no Guerlain Vetiver :(

Over the weekend I went to a friend’s bday/house warming party. Lots of people I’ve not talked to from a previous job were there and it was a full house. One old friend showed up and I could smell her throughout the house. She’s a Russian beauty and is always so stylish. I was looking forward to seeing her again and this time I really wanted to talk to her about perfume! I asked if she was wearing Coco because the patchouli lingering after her reminded me of it, but she was actually wearing Bond No. 9. We gabbed about perfumes and now I need to get a sample of No. 9 for myself.

Because that wonderful patchouli scent was with me all weekend – mentally – I decided to wear Coco today.

Um, unlike Chanel where numbers are the name of the scent, Bond No. 9 is the name of the company which has released about 75 scents.
      More research may be needed.

Today is the first day of my vacations, so I´m wearing Femme as I eat a huge carpaccio and drink beer in bed. We are leaving tomorrow for a week by the beach, so I´m packing a baggie of assorted samples along with my mini Femme, the snorkel and Adrian Goldswothy´s book, which I will finally be able to finish. It was hard for the kids to stay in the city, going to summer school as I felt like the worst mom with the meanest job ever, so I´m beyond thrilled because this beach is great and thus very busy during high season, but now it will be ours.

solanace, I’m currently about to finish the Cooper & Fry series by Stephen Booth. OK, it’s not quite up there with P.D. James, but Ben Cooper is very likable, and it all takes place in the Peak District of Derbyshire. Diane Fry is a less comfortable persona but I can sort of understand her, too.

I have the latest books from the Chief Inspector Gamache, Bruno Chief of Police and Maisie Dobbs series that I’m looking forward to, as well. Then I have to find a new series and will probably try one that Annikky recommended, Boris Akunin’s Erast Fandorin series, set i 19th century Russia.

I’ve taken note of tiffanie’s recs, too.

I have a serious case of the Mondays today. End of summer (even though I am not in school or have kids in school, the end of August feels like a bummer, especially since I feel like I didn’t get to do a lot of cool summer things and my birthday was last week, so no longer get to look forward to that), achy back that isn’t improving with PT, and 2 year old twins who refuse to sleep all night. At least it has cooled off a bit here – wearing Origins Ginger Essence to attempt to perk me up.

One wrist is wearing Une Rose de Kandahar and the other Une Rose de Vermeille. I was favoring K until the drydown, but now they’re about even. I won’t ever buy a FB of either, but I can enjoy both samples. I thought I might have my Lucky Scent ambers today, but no. It depends on the work environment, of course. In mine, I’ve never detected perfume or cologne on the senior managers, so the most I would ever wear on days when I had meetings was a spritz or two of 28 la Pausa in the morning. It’s very light and cool, neither too soft nor aggressive, discreet, and not old-fashioned. Just enough to make one feel fresh and on point. It’s primarily a vetiver scent, with some iris and citrus, and I think vetiver smells intelligent.

I was wearing L’AP Vanille Absolument (formerly Havana Vanille) yesterday. I’m not usually a big vanilla fan, but this one really works in late August and early September. After that, as the weather cools and nights grow longer, I do like its rich cousin, Frapin 1697 Absolu de Parfum.

Hello from this cold, sodden, blustery day down under. It’s the first day of spring, but doesn’t seem to be the last day of winter. I’m countering the weather with the happy warmth of Chergui–a smile in a bottle, in my opinion, but for some reason, not one I wear often. Maybe it’s the boozy top notes– I love them, but they can sometimes feel as though they might induce a headache.

I’m so interested to see the different pattern to your school year. We’re hurtling towards the end of ours, and you’re gearing up! To all NST in the education field: find the fun and get through the frustrations in any way that seems good to you!

Have Bois de Paradis on one arm and Encens Mythique on the other. They seem to be getting along well; the former is louder, but the latter has a few things to say as well.

SOTD = Jo Malone Mimosa & Cardamom

I’m still tickled pink that I got this sample from Macy’s. Macy’s! I had been wearing it the last 3 days with an increasing number of paltry sprays – from 2 on Saturday, to 3 yesterday to 7 today. Surprisingly, regardless of the number of sprays, longevity was around 6 hours. Other than the sweetness of mimosa and the (to me) light powdery cardamom. Perhaps it was the power of suggestion from C.H. that it reminded her of “something” and indeed, it reminded me of Oriza L. Legrand Heliotrope Blanc! I haven’t yet compared the notes and will need to re-sniff HB again to confirm. It projected a little bit on initial wearing and became a skin scent within an hour. Overall verdict – very wearable; perfect as an office scent. Do I need a FB? If it’s available in 30 mLs, yes.
