Last day of August! And where I live, it's the first day of school. Do tell us what fragrance you're wearing today.
I'm running behind this morning, and haven't even picked a scent yet. I will chime in later!
Reminder: this Friday, 9/4, will be Back to School Friday...wear a perfume that says 'back to school' to you, or that says you mean business, or ....?
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

SOTD: Reflection Man (Amouage).
I Have only smelled he female version of this- but I am sure you smell great.
In Bois Blond today- I think it faded away with in 15 minutes.
Good luck to all the parents out there who are sending their little ones off to school! Hope they are safe and have a good year ahead
Ack, that’s too fast.
That’s about right. Bois Blonde is nice, but I only wear it at night because it fades so quickly.
I guess it’s not just me then
Not at all. I like Atelier, but their colognes never last on me. I get a couple hours out of the heavy ones like Ambre New and Vanille Incensee, but that’s about it.
I get several hours of smelling good from Bois Blonds but it definitely settles down quickly and stays close after the first hour. I guess that’s why I like it especially in the evening.
Ohhh… Look how early I am. At this rate I am going to challenge myself to be the first commentator. With my son leaving at 6:45 AM, there is hope in this new year.
No perfume yet, but my sample of Rose Privee is giving me come hither looks.
GOOD MORN’ Y’ALL!
Our boys leave around the same time, but still I managed to be late with the SOTD poll! I have a summer’s worth of undone chores / errands.
School starts tomorrow here and we are probably like that meme with the mom jumping joyously while the kids mope.
I am wearing Tubereuse Coutoure. I used to think I could decide between Carnal Flower, Tub.Criminelle and Tub.Coutoure and I really can’t. I like them all and each has something the others don’t.
Ha, I thought something looked weird. I meant Couture.
We’re starting our second week of school here, but today is the first Monday. I’m wearing Bvlgari Black to go with my all-black outfit. Nice and cool here today. Feels like fall. Have a great day, everyone!
Lucky you, enjoying the fall weather! And I love all-black outfits.
Good morning! Today I’m wearing Roads Bitter End, which would have qualified for the “Fools Rush In” day a few weeks ago. It was apparently inspired by the western region of Ireland, a “beautiful barren place of isolation.” I put it on today because I’m wearing a very 90’s-esque dress, and it seems sort of fresh and androgynous, if a little bleak.
In other news, I’m attending two weddings on back-to-back weekends this fall, and I’m curious about what scents one might wear as a wedding guest. I was at a wedding in May and wore Flowerhead. I’m thinking Bitter End is not a good choice ;). Does anyone have an opinion on this?
Lol! Not the most auspicious wedding perfume
I’ve got the back-to-back weddings this fall too.
I’m thinking I might go with my latest infatuation (well, as of this paste Sat. anyway), Ambre 114 by Histoires de Parfums. It is an amber that isn’t too over the top and yet, great for fall temps.
Now to find a new dress!
Today is the last day of winter. (yaay!) Officially anyway. It’s rainy and cold and will be so for a few more days.
This morning I wore Grand Amour (Goutal) because I was craving it last night at bedtime but didnt want to turn the light back on to find it..
Then after I decided on Mitsouko. Vintage edp and current edt. Very unlike me! But I enjoyed it for the seemingly short time they lasted
Hope it will warm for you soon!
Sampling Red Cattleya from Oly.pic Orchids, a rather fruity floral. I am still a little ahead on my sampling– I have tried more samples since I moved than I have acquired but my package from Tigerlily should arrive tomorrow which includes the 10 samples from their Unreleased series. Someday I will get through my hundreds of samples backlog (assuming I never set foot in a perfume store again and live somewhere without internet access)
I’ve got one of those samples backlogs too. And yet… I ordered a few more the other day. Which is stupid.
Sometimes I just like to receive things in the mail!
Have you tried Sonnet XVII?
Not yet but it is among the great horde of untested samples
I like Red Cattleya. It’s a fruity floral for grown-ups that does not smell like fermentation or rot.
Chilly morning but then we are supposed to have hot weather this week. SOTD = yummy Chergui.
SOTD is the Eau Sauvage. Today started hot and humid here. We’re now having a minor thunderstorm and I think I need a bath, a clean set of clothes (have been gardening) and a new scent.
Me too! It’s a perfect go-to, simple and complex at the same time. Perfect for a hot summer day, isn’t it?
It is, and I hardly ever wear it, which is a shame because I enjoy it a lot. I’ve since moved on to Sables
Chanel’s Eau de Cologne.
From my 2 ml sample hauls. Classic cologne with an elegant touch of Chanel.
That one is so nicely done. Wish it were not so spendy.
I once had a dream that my bathroom was remodeled and the builder installed a tap for Chanel Eau de Cologne. Gosh that is a great scent.
We’re going to remodel our bathroom very soon. I’ll look for a tap like that. : )
Yep. The qualms we all have for some or most of this line is the lasting power.
LOL. I sometimes wish I could have spare vats of these to spray my curtain…
Possibly my favourite cologne.
The school starts tomorrow/on Wednesday here, but it’s my first day back at work. I’m wearing Rue Cambon, my No 1 office scent. The weather situation is as austenfan described
sigh… my #1 office scent too
I would love to be in you offices! How elegant!
The offices are quite dreary, exactly as you would imagine the heart of Brussels bureaucracy. That’s why I wear Rue Cambon
Exactly. You should walk past tables in that dreary office many times to leave some wonderful sillage.
This reminds me when an kind colleague of mine moves about in my lab that has all these horrendous smells, she seems to leave a wonderful green floral trail that lifts my spirit. I have to ask her on my last day what the juice is!
But why on the last day?
You are most likely looking a lot less disheveled than I. It’s so muggy at the moment and even though I’m not looking forward to winter I do a lot better in colder weather.
I was looking pretty sharp in my Victoria Beckham dress. Then I got caught in heavy, heavy rain with a huge bag of groceries.
Serves me right for being so posh
It’s sunny, hot and humid today. We’re supposed to see temps in the upper 80’s/low 90’s this week. Summer is going out with a bang indeed.
The kids don’t go back to school until next Tuesday, so to boost my morale (it’s been a looooong summer) I’m wearing Prada Candy. It tends to wear fairly light on me, so will be perfect for hot weather.
That’s so nice. Makes me crazy that school starts before Labor day.
What happened to the weekend ?! The rapidity of its passing makes me very sad.
SOTD is SSS Forest Walk.
I was thinking of you this weekend, did you get drenched from Erika?
We have lucked out so far! But did you see that there are THREE Cat 4 hurricanes in the pacific? Simultaneously! Wow!
Amouage Journey Woman. I’m on my third decant of it and can’t quite commit enough to buy a FB. When I first put it on, I love it, but it has some element that makes me feel slightly nauseous. ?? Kind of a love-hate relationship here. I think it’s the honey I don’t like.
I love Journey Woman. I wore that Saturday. Three decants is definitely a lot of testing with it, but I can see why you’re hesitant to get a FB. They are pricey.
I love Journey woman too! If you can’t commit to a full bottle then money saved I say!
Or you can host a split as i would bet that it would be more economical.
It feel wonderful here- not Fall, but a cool and softly damp morning. It will warm up with fluffy cloudy skies. Am wearing Chanel 5 Eau Premiere- just about perfect anytime but especially today.
I treated myself to a shopping trip yesterday and picked up some new clothes, Terracotta bronzer, and a rollerball I found on sale. Of course, when I got home, I found out the rollerball had about 1/3 of the juice missing (even though it wasn’t a tester). Not sure if it’s worth picking a fight over a “final sale” item, or if I should just get over it, since I haven’t finished a rollerball in years.
Anyway, wearing Marni today and feeling lovely!
I’ve had rollerballs that evaporated quite a bit in their unopened boxes. Might be worth sealing over, or transferring to another container. Was yours by any chance from Piguet? Mine were.
That’s a good point. The scent smells fine, so I think I’ll just seal it up and be grateful I don’t have to worry about using up all 10 mL.
Plus, it was nothing fancy. Just some J. Crew 57 that I picked up while trying on clothes.
Still blind sampling, so I don’t know what I’m wearing. The last two were both Caron scents for some reason. Montaigne was rather surprising, but then far too sweet for me. Nuit de Noel was unsurprising, unsurprisingly.
School started here on the 14th (at least a week/ten days earlier than prior years, but the new policy is to get all of first semester wrapped up and exams finished before Christmas break), and even The CEO went back to teaching at Va Tech last Monday.
However, he’s home sick today and pretty whiny about it. I got him set up on the couch with a blankie and Tylenol and Gatorade, and a movie in the DVD player, just as if he were eight years old. Hey – comfort is comfort no matter how old you are.
Now I’m off to do some laundry and hang it on the line outside. Weather’s gorgeous – sunny, with fluffy clouds, and I’m in Iris Poudre.
Nothing like being tucked in all right and tight bya loved one to make you feel secure in your recovery!
Mmmm Iris Poudre
Love, love iris poudre. It feels more elegant than I am, unfortunately, but I still love it.
School started mid-August here, but my youngest has just graduated from college (!!) so I’m somewhat out of the loop now. I love the back to school time of year, though – September is such a beautiful month.
I’m wearing my new sample of I miss Violet from The Different Company. I absolutely love it and wish it weren’t so expensive. Neither violet nor leather is a favorite note for me, but I love what I get from the notes here: green, slightly powdery soft clean suede. I’ll have to see if I can win the lottery soon so I can buy a bottle. This could be a signature scent.
You’ve intrigued me with this one!
I’m looking forward to having all of mine out of college, in terms of the bank account… not really looking forward to having them all out of the house. It’s been bad enough sending my firstborn off. She’s half done, but Kid #2 will be ready for college right after she finishes, with Kid #3 two years after that. Argh.
Yes, it’s an adjustment that I am still working through. I miss them. The oldest went to college in 2007, then two years later, the middle son, and two years later the youngest. The youngest said to me after his spring break this year (his senior year) – “now you’re really an empty nester. That was my last spring break at home.” I’m sure he had no idea what a thud hit my heart.
Thank goodness for wonderful friends. Including perfume friends!
Congrats on your youngest and his college degree achievements
Keep an eye on EBay for it — TDC always seems to have lots of bottles running around there for a good-sized discount. Of course, you never know exactly what you’re getting when you buy through a “non-authorized” retailer, but I’ve had pretty darn good luck!
Hey, thanks! Great idea!
SOTD a is Mugler Chyprissime. It is gorgeous but how in the word do you pronounce that?!? I am guessing ship-rip-iss-mee? I imagine wearing this on a crisp fall day
My guess is sheep-ree-seem
My stomach does a flip just walking down the school supplies aisle at the local Duane Reade. Ugh.
All the best to those mom’s & dad’s getting the kids back on schedule..
SOTD for me is, surprise! Ambre 114. Loving this one!
Getting ME back on schedule is the challenge, ha! I hate early mornings.
I had a Snoopy poster with him halfway sitting up atop his doghouse, baggy-eyed, squiggles around his head. The thought balloon stated – I hate mornings.
Leaving on a month long trip to my new home (South of France) and had to figure out which one scent I could live with for a month straight. I needed it to be versatile and had it narrowed down to 3. Ultimately, I chose Pour un Homme (Caron), as Cuir de Lancome is untested on the SO and I know he dislikes vetiver (????!!!!!), so no Guerlain Vetiver
Have fun on your trip!
Over the weekend I went to a friend’s bday/house warming party. Lots of people I’ve not talked to from a previous job were there and it was a full house. One old friend showed up and I could smell her throughout the house. She’s a Russian beauty and is always so stylish. I was looking forward to seeing her again and this time I really wanted to talk to her about perfume! I asked if she was wearing Coco because the patchouli lingering after her reminded me of it, but she was actually wearing Bond No. 9. We gabbed about perfumes and now I need to get a sample of No. 9 for myself.
Because that wonderful patchouli scent was with me all weekend – mentally – I decided to wear Coco today.
So fun to discover another fumie IRL
It is! I hadn’t talked to her in a few years, but when I knew she was coming to the party I thought: YES! Because I knew she always smelled good.
Um, unlike Chanel where numbers are the name of the scent, Bond No. 9 is the name of the company which has released about 75 scents.
More research may be needed.
They have one called Bond No. 9 Perfume, and I think a Coco lover would be likely to appreciate it.
Aah, now I see it on their site: Bond No. 9 Signature. Thank you, leathermountain.
Jenkr, hope you can grab a sample and that you love it on you. If it smells like Coco, it smells gooood.
Wearing FM Angeliques sous la Pluie and vowing to get me life in order today
Angéliques is so beautiful, very contemplative.
Wearing Nuxe Prodigieux today. It really does smell like their skin care products and so far it’s lasting quite well on me.
Today is the first day of my vacations, so I´m wearing Femme as I eat a huge carpaccio and drink beer in bed. We are leaving tomorrow for a week by the beach, so I´m packing a baggie of assorted samples along with my mini Femme, the snorkel and Adrian Goldswothy´s book, which I will finally be able to finish. It was hard for the kids to stay in the city, going to summer school as I felt like the worst mom with the meanest job ever, so I´m beyond thrilled because this beach is great and thus very busy during high season, but now it will be ours.
I hope you have a wonderful time, beer in bed is a good idea!
Thank you so much, Austenfan. I was so depressed because my work trip to Amsterdam did not work out. Darn austerity, darn bankers. Happy about the beach, though. No perfume sniffing there, lol, but lots of nature, I certainly hope to walk a lot.
That book sounds so interesting, yet I am too lazy to read anything but murder mystery series these days.
I with you on the murder mysteries. I read the Agatha Raisin novels in the past year and am starting on the Hamish Macbeth stories.
Noted, will check these out.
I love those too, tell me about a good one, Nozknoz, plllease…
solanace, I’m currently about to finish the Cooper & Fry series by Stephen Booth. OK, it’s not quite up there with P.D. James, but Ben Cooper is very likable, and it all takes place in the Peak District of Derbyshire. Diane Fry is a less comfortable persona but I can sort of understand her, too.
I have the latest books from the Chief Inspector Gamache, Bruno Chief of Police and Maisie Dobbs series that I’m looking forward to, as well. Then I have to find a new series and will probably try one that Annikky recommended, Boris Akunin’s Erast Fandorin series, set i 19th century Russia.
I’ve taken note of tiffanie’s recs, too.
Thank you so much for your careful answer, Nozknoz. Copied and saved.
Have you ever tried the Commissario Montalbano by Camilleri? I haven’t read any of them but the tv series is very enjoyable. Plus it is set in Italy and a lot of good food is enjoyed in it.
Have a great trip!
Thank you, Leathermountain.
Just dropped my oldest off at the bus stop for his first day of Kindergarten. I didn’t think I would feel sad/emotional, but here I am crying into my coffee. Wearing Pacifica Island Vanilla to cheer myself up.
Oh, I remember that feeling!
Awww. I know that emptiness so well. I still feel the same way when my daughter comes from Calif. and then departs. OTH, my son and DIL are celebrating 24/7 because two sons are off to college and they’re finally alone.
Thinking of you!
I´m with you. I always cry, my black mascara is always a mess when the kids are involved, lol.
Parfum de Therese by Frederic Malle. Today is the first day I’ve felt well enough to wear perfume after being sick for 2 weeks. Yay!
So glad you’re better!
SOTD: Frederic Malle Dries Van Noten
Me too! Which I think is, coincidentally, perfect for back-to-school – especially for fall semester. Who doesn’t need to smell like cookies when going back to University?
on me is smells more like sandalwood with a hint of cookie. Almost like Serge Lutens Santal Blanc layered over a vanilla baked good!
You smell fabulous!!
I have a serious case of the Mondays today. End of summer (even though I am not in school or have kids in school, the end of August feels like a bummer, especially since I feel like I didn’t get to do a lot of cool summer things and my birthday was last week, so no longer get to look forward to that), achy back that isn’t improving with PT, and 2 year old twins who refuse to sleep all night. At least it has cooled off a bit here – wearing Origins Ginger Essence to attempt to perk me up.
I hate it when MONDAYS happen… Hope the Ginger Essence worked!
Summer is almost gone, and I woke up craving Terracotta. So I spritzed and put the lotion on, too.
A “happy back to school” to those who are making the transition. My family starts classes this week.
I wonder if there is an apple fragrance for the teacher . . . anyone remember Avon Apple Blossom?
SOTD is Decennial Santal Sacre. I needed to cleanse my palate after testing Amouages all day yesterday…
I’m wearing 1969 layered with Santal Majuscule. BOOM
1969 from Histoires de Parfum? HdP’s 1969 Parfum de Revolte would be interesting on the first day of school.
Yep, that’s the one! I’m revolting against Monday I guess
I’m sampling Les Nereides Opopomax today. It started out great, all resins and wood and benzoin, but now it’s gone all almondy on me. I’m not too fond of almond. On the other hand, I’m excited to see what Andy Tauer can do with tuberose, one of my favorite notes.
My SOTD is Chanel No. 5 Eau De Parfum.
I think this is my favorite of the No. 5’s. I also have No.5 in EDT and Eau Premiere. I think all three are gorgeous, and I wear them regularly, but I do love this one the best.
I’ve never tried the Parfum version of it. I’d like to do that one day.
One wrist is wearing Une Rose de Kandahar and the other Une Rose de Vermeille. I was favoring K until the drydown, but now they’re about even. I won’t ever buy a FB of either, but I can enjoy both samples. I thought I might have my Lucky Scent ambers today, but no. Some of our schools begin tomorrow, including my granddaughter’s full-day kindergarten. She’s very excited about it. Weather is beastly hot and humid.
Scent twin (Rose de Kandahar)! Today is very cool and rainy and I couldn’t wait to pull out a rich spicy rose. They’ve been waiting so patiently all summer long.
It depends on the work environment, of course. In mine, I’ve never detected perfume or cologne on the senior managers, so the most I would ever wear on days when I had meetings was a spritz or two of 28 la Pausa in the morning. It’s very light and cool, neither too soft nor aggressive, discreet, and not old-fashioned. Just enough to make one feel fresh and on point. It’s primarily a vetiver scent, with some iris and citrus, and I think vetiver smells intelligent.
I was wearing L’AP Vanille Absolument (formerly Havana Vanille) yesterday. I’m not usually a big vanilla fan, but this one really works in late August and early September. After that, as the weather cools and nights grow longer, I do like its rich cousin, Frapin 1697 Absolu de Parfum.
I dabbed on (very lightly) some Carven Le Parfum early today, because I had to attend a funeral and didn’t want to create problems for anybody with allergies. Now I think that I’m going to see what I have in my desk at work and put on something else, so I can at least smell myself.
I said I’d check in with my fragrance later, and so here I am — I’m wearing Diptyque Oyedo, for the 2nd day in a row.
And (offtopic) for anyone who was waiting for it, here’s the trailer for the last season of Downton Abbey:
So bummed it’s finally coming to an end
And looks like they’re planning a tearjerker last season!
I don’t really care for DA, but I know it has many fans! Oyédo on the other hand is a brilliant scent, one of those quirky earlier Diptyques.
Oyédo is certainly the quirkier of the 2! DA is what my son calls highbrow junk tv, which is accurate. I find it highly enjoyable.
That highbrow junk TV totally sucked me in. I think I watched the first 5 seasons on Amazon Prime in one weeks time!
Ha, it really is addictive. But I’m easily sucked into costume shows of around 10 episodes or less, it’s not such a huge commitment anyway. Just now finishing up Poldark!
Your son is so right! DA has some brilliant actors though, and far worse things are shown on tv. I hope you’ll enjoy it’s last season.
Oh, thank you!
I’m actually ok with it coming to an end. I’ll definitely be watching but it’s not got the same appeal as it did in the first 2-3 years.
There is another…very popular around here: Gran Hotel. Practically Downton Abbey set in a family-run hotel.
I watched the first episode of that one! Might watch the whole thing eventually.
(And for anyone else who wants to see it, Netflix streaming has the first 3 seasons)
Hello from this cold, sodden, blustery day down under. It’s the first day of spring, but doesn’t seem to be the last day of winter. I’m countering the weather with the happy warmth of Chergui–a smile in a bottle, in my opinion, but for some reason, not one I wear often. Maybe it’s the boozy top notes– I love them, but they can sometimes feel as though they might induce a headache.
I’m so interested to see the different pattern to your school year. We’re hurtling towards the end of ours, and you’re gearing up! To all NST in the education field: find the fun and get through the frustrations in any way that seems good to you!
Wearing Givenchy III today. It’s my late day at work and had a dr’s appointment and it was the first thing I grabbed.
We are having some much-needed rain, so I don’t mind that it’s heavy enough to keep me home on my first day of vacation. Since I don’t have to go out I just won’t. Have Bois de Paradis on one arm and Encens Mythique on the other. They seem to be getting along well; the former is louder, but the latter has a few things to say as well.
Jour d’Hermes is bringing me back to life after a weekend of packing and a long morning of cleaning out an empty apartment. The shower helped, but it is really the Jour that is making me feel like a human person again.
Just wanted something simple today, so I went with Elizabeth Arden Green Tea Honeysuckle.
Based on fairly recent comments about Hanbury, I dug out my sample and wore it today. I’d forgotten how pretty it is! Makes me think of honeysuckle, even though I know there’s none in there.
SOTD Au Dela. I just love this one. A few trees in my yard are already sporting fall colors which is strange because the days have been hot and humid lately in New England. I think Au Dela is a good scent for the change of seasons.
Bruno Fazzolari is brilliant!
SOTD = Jo Malone Mimosa & Cardamom
I’m still tickled pink that I got this sample from Macy’s. Macy’s! I had been wearing it the last 3 days with an increasing number of paltry sprays – from 2 on Saturday, to 3 yesterday to 7 today. Surprisingly, regardless of the number of sprays, longevity was around 6 hours. Other than the sweetness of mimosa and the (to me) light powdery cardamom. Perhaps it was the power of suggestion from C.H. that it reminded her of “something” and indeed, it reminded me of Oriza L. Legrand Heliotrope Blanc! I haven’t yet compared the notes and will need to re-sniff HB again to confirm. It projected a little bit on initial wearing and became a skin scent within an hour. Overall verdict – very wearable; perfect as an office scent. Do I need a FB? If it’s available in 30 mLs, yes.
