Lazy weekend poll ~ open thread, Michael Jackson’s Birthday 2015

Posted by Robin on 29 August 2015 197 Comments

Michael Jackson

Our same old weekend open thread: talk about anything you like — the perfume you’re wearing today, the upcoming Fall 2015 fragrance release you're most looking forward to, whatever.

Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

With apologies, I am on the road today and will not be able to check responses until very late tonight.

Stopped over at Bergdorfs last night to sniff the Jo Malone mimosa I’ve seen folks mention here. But first I was stopping at Guerlain to look at lipsticks. Yes, I splurged on a too expensive lipstick, but also came away with Teazzurra samples, skin care samples and a small gift size red lipstick because the SA said she needed to see me in red so she tossed it in my bag.

And I sprayed on the new Mon Exclusif. I like it. The lavender was prominent at first to me, which is nice, but it faded. It shared elements of a Terracotta to my nose. Curious to know if anyone else has tried it. Beautiful bottle.

After all that, I forgot to stop at Jo Malone! Guess I’ll have to go back…

I was going to stop by BG as well and I would have bumped imto you; however, I decided at the last minute to walk through Macy’s instead to sniff Mimosa & Cardamom on the way home. Nice on paper and I got a sample to try on skin.

Macy’s sells JM? I didn’t know that. That makes it easier for me.

There’s a counter at the Herald Square store. My suburban NJ Macy’s does not carry the line in-store. My Nordstom doesn’t carry it either bit it has La Mer – go figure.

They gave you a sample at Macy’s?? Wow! That’s new to me.
I do like their new beauty floor (in NYC that is)..

They did! It was a long shot but I’m thinking it’s a leased counter and has different policies – lucky us 🙂

And I agree with you on the beauty floor – the center parts look more spacious (perhaps given the high ceiling) but the ones on the inside edge feel just as crowded as before, if not worse.

I find it very scary venturing into the perfume area at Macy’s. The sales reps are vultures! Super aggressive.
I don’t do it very often but when I do I always regret it.

I tried to stop by Jo Malone at my local Nordstrom last night, but they’d rearranged the entire cosmetics department and I couldn’t find the JM counter. Settled for new eye shadow at Laura Mercier instead. 🙂

I don’t really know about forthcoming releases unless they’re actually out and reviewed. I am looking forward to using my recently purchased J Crew/Arquiste No.57 and I’m anxiously awaiting EnVoyage Indigo Vanilla as things I’ll probably wear frequently this fall (assuming I break out of sampling mode)

Envoyage Vanilla sounds great! I received my Envoyage Chocolate trio before I left for vacation and have yet to try them. This weekend and coming week will not be good since it will be a scorcher – yuck! We miss you in these here parts!

Commando right now and haven’t decided what to wear yet. I am wasting time before tackling a laundry room clean-up. After doing two loads of laundry last week after returning from vacation, I discovered a leak. Thank goodness it was clean water (it was the hose and connection to the water supply that was leaking). It was fixed earlier this week but now I have 6 loads of laundry to do.

For my 250K steps reward, I am getting Puredistance White , TF Amber Absolute (I am dithering over which free samples to get) and a TBD.

Oh, and anyone going to Sniffapalooza Fall Ball? I’m signed up for October 24.

    Have a great weekend everyone!

It sort of depends on if I can transfer to NESA for the fall term– if I need the money to hold my place in the class, get books, supplies, etc then I won’t go. If I don’t need the money for school then I’m definitely considering going to Sniffapalooza

Sorry about the leak–I’ve been dealing with a roof situation, but all is good. I am very excited about your “rewards program” and all are excellent choices. I’m not going to press my luck, so I will have to miss the Fall Ball, but I am sending you all of my good fortune so that they will call your name this time for the gift raffle. I am still happily working my way through the box of goodies from the Spring Fling. In fact, I meant to post yesterday that my go to summer scent has been the MFK Aqua Universalis Forte that was in the gift hatbox. It smells great in both air conditioning and the hot, humid New Jersey summer streets. Until I use up some of this bounty, I can’t justify buying a thing!

Thank you for mentioning laundry room clean-up. I keep forgetting that I desperately need to get out a ladder and clean the dryer exhaust on the side of the house. It’s one of those things that only occurs to me in the shower or at 3am and I really don’t want to burn the house down!

So true about the dryer exhaust! Mine was cleaned this past December and because the dryer is in the basement near the exhaust outlet, there’s only a few feet of hose and there was barely any lint.

I hope your headache is all gone!

I’d love to do the Sniffapalooza Fall Ball but this fall is looking like my “fun” budget is going to weddings.. which are fun, but also expensive.

Also excited that we just booked our Paris/Prague trip for Nov.! Haven’t been to Paris in a couple years, and never to Prague.. looking forward.

My initial thought was to spend the entire budget on L’Incendiaire which I am sure most will agree is insanely outrageously ridiculously priced. And then my rational brain took over. The TBD is on reserve for something else which is still TBD.:-)

You inspire me to do the two loads of laundry that have been waiting all week (now four) while I have been being just so ridiculously sick. I can’t wait to feel better (actually I do feel better every day) but in the meantime I should be enjoying the pleasure of having crated clean laundry, which really is not so much physical effort!

I am going to fall Sniffa; already thinking about what my Sniffapalooza purchase should be, if anything. See you there!

I’m wearing Lolita Lempicka Elle L’Aime, mainly because it was mentioned in a review of another scent quite recently. I thought that I had a mini and lo and behold I found it in my box of umpteen untested minis. I quite like it, but it is very coconutty.

Lightly applied Angel last night before going to bed… In my tired state it was all salt and cumin. I sniffed my bottle this morning, and it still smells like Angel… This morning I am in Timbuktu, again lightly applied as it is going to be a warm, muggy day.

Oooohhhhhh, MJ was a Virgo. That makes sense. He had that deeply entrenched Virgo drive for perfection, among other fab traits 🙂 (not a Virgo myself, just a faithful Virgo supporter)

It rained last night, and some this morning. Cleared the air. Makes me feel ready for fall. And jeans and boots and hot coffee and scarves.

Have lots of chores planned for the day, but feeling lazy and like they can happen whenever. Need a lazy scent….EL Sensuous? That’s packed away somewhere (3 weeks post-move). Or maybe some backbone to start on those cores, Hermes Kelly Caleche? Or something else? Dunno! It’s Saturday, where decisions can happen after some quick shut-eye. 🙂

I’ve been looking for something strong, floral, aldehyde-y. I’ve been wearing PdN Jardin Secret, so something along those lines or similar to Amouage Dia or Jubilation 25 or Divine L’infante. Any suggestions? i just bought a cheapie…Maroussia, by Slava Zaitsev, hoping it would be similar, but it has an almond/vanilla vibe that I can’t do.

Otherwise, I’m enjoying Natori Natori as a cheap thrill too, and the weather in the Midwest US is very beautiful today!

Nice title for a weekend poll (Michael and I share the same birthday – virgos unite!). Just had a lovely morning yoga session all to myself, followed by coffee and some much-needed pampering. It’s a scorcher today, so I’ll be reaching for Marni, which always cools me down (while also smelling pretty fabulous).

In the ‘dress for the job you want’ spirit I’m wearing Puredistance M today. Perfuming for the weather I want. I’m soooo ready for fall! I love to be outside and not gasping for breath, cowering in the shade, and running with sweat.
I was already lemming the forthcoming Papillon scent, Salome and now I’m bargaining with myself. If it happens to be released on my birthday it’s a sign from the universe and I should blind buy. Completely reasonable, huh?

I completely get your reasoning, except that I think you’re being a bit mingy with timing. See, a birthday really begins about a week or so before the actual day, and continues into wind-down and aftermath for about another 10 days, so in fact, your window of significance is closer to two and a half weeks than to a single day.

I always think that the universe needs to be interpreted by what it intends, not what it does…

I agree with you, Waterdragon. My Festival of Celebrations goes on for a couple of weeks, probably due to the fact that not everyone is available on the exact date for a party.
After nearly three months of drought here on the usually “Wet” Coast, the weather has changed to fall, so it’s time to break out the Givenchy III!

Agree that all sounds reasonable! I’m also very much looking forward to trying Salome, and reflecting that a birthday in the next few weeks means that Christmas is not far off, so there are multiple occasions on which to buy myself a present.

Eggzellent. I’m yearning to try Salome too — the next colleague heading to the UK for a conference may just be burdened with the awful task of finding some for me.

Sort of. Some people look down their academic noses at the thought of going to a, you know, (sharp intake of breath) perfume counter, as though something there might be catching. Others say, “Oh, what fun– better than wandering aimlessly round XXXX city.” One will only do it if it’s Harrods, which it hardly ever is, and then only if I shout him a meringue the size of a dinner plate. I’m more than happy to buy him a sweet thing to eat, and I must say I find something infinitely appealing in the image of A Serious Academic solemnly eating his solitary way through pink eggwhite and sugar. He sent me a selfie doing it — entrancing! I’m lucky, and I also get to travel quite often myself, so I’m not quite such a burden to my friends as it must seem!

Enfleurage Inc’s Roses Aromatic Oil, a couple of rose absolutes in jojoba oil, sold as a roll on. Love this!

When it wears off I’ll do some blind vintage sampling.

I’m wearing a number of amber scents having just received my LuckyScent amber pack. My favorite by far is the Ambre 114 by Histoires de Parfums. Dries down into a lovely cuddly vanilla scent. Tom Ford’s Amber Absolute is a doozy – wow! strong stuff. The others are interesting, but not winning me over yet.

And then the hubby unexpectedly snuck up behind me a sprayed one of his favorites, Jessica McClintock, and now I’m a smelly mess.

Happy weekend you guys! Anybody getting anything good in the BeautyHabit sale? I’m eyeing the Providence Perfume Co Hindu Honeysuckle, but it would be a blind buy which I’m trying to avoid these days… maybe I can enable someone else who already know they love it?! $38 (with the discount) seems like a steal for 15ml in comparison to $125 for 30ml currently listed on PPCo’s website!

(There’s also an Atelier Silver Iris candle which I bet is nice but even with the discount code, it’s still $60, which seems like a pricey candle to me? Maybe I don’t have a good sense of what candles cost.)

I may do a bit of damage as I see Claus Porto soaps are in the sale section at the moment. Haven’t bought those in ages but used to love them – and the husband finds them too big to use comfortably so will keep his paws off!

Shalimar Ode à la Vanille sur la Route du Méxique – heck, this is long! – my winter 2015 perfume, for sure. Love its complexity, heft and smokiness. Couldn’t wear it yesterday because I had a work meeting with only one guy and didn’t wan’t to convey anything strange, lol! So I wore current Vent Vert instead, which I find very work appropriate in its rather sharp and synthetic ways.
But my beloved Mexican Shalimar shines through the greyest of days, I’m enjoying it so much, as always.

Happy weekend to all, and may you smell delicious doing whatever you do! I’m up and about hideously early because of taking my husband to the airport for his flight to Australia. I found a forgotten sample of Beloved in my jacket pocket, so I sprayed that on my way to the car. A very little goes a long way, and it’s instant, persistent skank…husband said thoughtfully, ” Pity about the tyranny of check-in times.” Hmmm. That might be a purchase one day! ????

Hi everyone, happy saturday. I went to Sephora today to sample Tom Ford Noir for women. I’m pretty disappointed. In theory I should like it very much. in reality though, it is to unisex for me. I keep trying with his line, but so far, I haven’t found much excitement in anything I have tested. I brought home a sample anyway to try again another time.

What an interesting thought! What would I miss most, in an alien place? I think I would choose CB I Hate Perfume Black March. It smells like fertile soil after a rainstorm. But I might miss trees, too, so I’d bring Slumberhouse Norne for an evergreen forest. Can I have two?

Well, though I live here, I’m a Northland chick, so it has to be ocean, but not the bright ocean smells that designers favour. Has to be deep blue and rich teal — what note could ever do that, I wonder?– yet offer the sense of clean air and open space. And, since I’m now in my mind instructing a really talented perfumer and money is no object in this game, I’d like a dark hint of tangled, cool bush and its secrets just at the edges. Sigh. Te Tai Tokerau in a bottle? I’d pay anything!

The scents I love in nature – a bonfire on a wild west coast beach with driftwood smoke and kelp, or leaf litter and rotting wood beneath a canopy of native beech trees near the snowline in the South Island, or an early morning walk through scrub and broom and gorse and kanuka as the heat causes the dew to evaporate – aren’t the scents I tend to wear as perfume (they don’t necessarily exist as perfume). So, it’s a tricky proposition…I reckon I would need my full 23kg baggage allowance for perfume alone.

Funny how we all tend to look to nature – no one looks to a ‘city’ scent.

I am definitely going to check out your suggestions though!

I don’t have the sample details yet but I am on several SAs’ email distribution. lolassecretbeautyblog will have the details in the next few days. If you want the men’s bag, I suggest working with an SA ASAP as these are more limited – feel free to email me for SA recommendations. I would avoid the Le Labo SA’s as the best one left and the 2 that I worked with the last several times were not as responsive and also did not pay attention to details. Although they made good afterwards, it took me many emails, texts and phone follow-ups (I’m not a shopperzilla despite how this sounds).

Re-testing Tom Ford Noir pour Femme from the sample I got at Sephora. Not quite as sure about it. It seems very sour and kind of chemical at first, but still dries down really nicely. I think I may have sprayed too close to the back of my hand and wound up with too heavy an application. I suspect it has to be sprayed really lightly or else it is just too concentrated until it dries way down. Am going to try it again sprayed as lightly as I can or blotted after spraying. Has anyone else been trying it?

I posted earlier that I had tested it today. I am really a crazy sprayer and I probably put way to much on. I was disappointed mostly because it smelled too unisex for me. I liked it better after the drydown. I got more of a smoky smell than the creamy vanilla that I wanted.

Sample of the day is Orange Sanguine which is nice over the remains of Vanille Galante from very late last night on top of a whisper of Eau des Merveilles from yesterday morning and afternoon. It’s great when things play together nicely.

I’m KonMari-ing my home bit by bit, and I enjoy my fragrances more as I simplify. In the past few months I’ve used up samples I forgot existed and shared many unloved samples with friends and family. With less on hand it is easier to find what I want when I want it. I find myself using and enjoying more fragrance rather than less.

I’ve been telling myself I must wait for cooler days before I order any fragrance by mail. Anybody else waiting for the summer heat to end before replenishing?

After all they get made in a factory, trucked to a warehouse, shipped on planes or boats, more trucks, more warehouses…. none of those are likely to be temperature controlled environments. And they’re still fine.

I live on a rural route though and my mailbox is out in direct sun all day, so anything in it is literally hot to the touch when I pick it up late in the day. So I’m stalling on buying ‘good stuff’ til it’s cooler out.

[Yes I did just buy Tom Ford Amber Absolute, but that came signature required so at least it didn’t sit in my cooker-mailbox 🙂 ]

Happy weekend everyone! Got back from North Dakota yesterday where I got to spend some time at Theodore Roosevelt National Park and see some bison and some incredible scenery. Since the West seems to be on my mind, I’m spending the evening watching nature documentaries and wearing D. S. &Durga El Cosmico. I can’t imagine wearing it often, but I do like it.

Does anyone have favorite scents that make you think of the desert or plains?

Tauer’s L’Aire du Desert Morocain is the best I know of for summoning impressions of high dusty planes with some campfire woodsmoke.. it smells like Wyoming to me, and I have spent time sitting around campfires in Morroco and in Wyoming…

Did the fragrance experience at Chanel Bloomingdale’s. I treated myself to my first ever bottle of extrait. It’s the half ounce size of boxes of eels, lol! I feel like I just came of age as a budding perfumista. What a special experience. 🙂

Yesterday and today were busy days. Yesterday, I visited a grandmother that “needed” a us to buy her a ton of stuff for rehab (knee replacement). For crying out loud, the sweat pants and shorts and tshirts are enough clothes and a couple books as well. We said no to the buying her the really expensive Kindle and the big bottle of Eurphoria. The Euphoria perfume was going to be used as a guise of too lazy to even try to learn how to bathe with her wound.

Went to Kennywood today and wore no 19 in EDT form which faded quick. Just had to wash all the dirt, grit, sweat and whatever grime was on me. SOTD on Friday was Shalimar.

All I have to say is How Utterly and Inexorably incorrect the Review that was given to Venetian Bergamot from Tom Ford Private Blend… I spritzed it on this past Weds. and I could still get a Whiff of it on Fri. It is BEAUTIFUL and on my skin the Bergamot was totally upfront and lasted through to the end of the base notes, nor was there anything “Fecal” about the scent. I was ready to not even sample it because of the wrongly scathing review of it here and have to let you all know… DO NOT HEED IT! The scent is VERY lovely, somewhat Sharp, but then it transforms into something you could easily see imagine some Marchesa or Contessa wearing to Un Ballo Di Maschero! It feels Expensive and Lush and Sophisticated, but in a Modern sense, not fusty or old.

Again, Tom Ford has not let me down (yet invariably, the review has) and this is A Beauty of a Fragrance!! I recommend it Whole-Heartedly!

P.S. Smelled the New Miu Miu also…. HEA-VEN! I am it buying for myself. it is SOOOOO Unique. I am DYING for it!

Interesting. The Tom Ford Private Blends seem to be very polarizing–I’ve yet to find one I really like, but this is a good reminder that many others love the line! I wonder why opinions would be so divided! They’re very pricey, of course, which I’m sure does raise expectations/create no small amount of resentment if people feel disappointed by them…but plenty of other lines have really high pricepoints. Maybe it’s to do with the fact that TF has another line that’s less expensive while still being very good perfume–makes it harder to stomach if the more expensive fragrances don’t work for you? (Me!)

Also, The reviewer of the scent (Venetian Bergamot) Is NOTORIOUSLY Difficult to please and Somewhat… shall we kindly say… SNARKY! ;-( But, i should have learned LONG ago not to listen or be influenced by them, so I guess I’d be the idiot for being trepidatious from what they wrote! 😀 LOL!

P.S. I have loved every Tom Ford fragrance he has made… But I am also FAR from bias (wish I could say the same of others…) if TF made something I didn’t like, I’d be the first to say!

The interesting thing about that review ( because I went back and reread it after also trying VB and thinking it was nice) was how much he admits to wearing when he does do a review- 3mls!
That is a ton of fragrance to wear at once and maybe why he was able to pick up on some of the skanky scent that I could not.
Nevertheless, he never fails to make me laugh.

You must have been smelling fabulous! Most of them may find it does not smell the same on their skins, though. It doesn’t work on me at all, for example.

Those numbered CdGs – I can never remember which one it is that I like. It wouldn’t hurt to have a backup bottle, and you might find a particularly interesting special edition bottle. I have one of them in a heart-shaped bottle covered in white fur that was also inexpensive.

Always late to the party. I was painting the dining room yesterday and Friday. I had a minor meltdown yesterday morning when the paint really didn’t look like it was supposed to. Lighting can really change things and I know I shouldn’t really look until its totally dry. The color is called Dash of Curry but there’s nothing curry about it really. I do like it today so we’ll see how long it lasts.
I’m getting ready to play with some samples and relax for the rest of the day. I was contemplating a trip to Ulta but I’m too comfy now to go.

Dash of curry … I am envisioning sort of a deep yellow, with an undertone of what? green or red? What did it turn out to look like?
I am on the verge of some major remodeling, and these are very important considerations! 🙂

It matched a swatch of Sherwin Williams paint that is called Racing Red but I like Behr paint so I went with their version which seemed a bit warmer. There’s nothing curry about it. The best way I can describe it is reddish coral. Not a bit of brown tone in sight. Or gold. Red orange coral.

There is a Madhur Jaffrey recipe for shrimp in a pink sauce that’s a lot more like this than a usual curry would be. It’s very good – I don’t have a picture, but here’s the recipe:

Paint colors are so tricky! You can try painting sections of the wall, but you don’t really know until you live with it. I’ve seen a dining room that is a golden yellow that is a bit lighter and less brown than Dash of Curry. It looks great because they have a big modern painting of a wheat field with mountains and a blue sky in the background that both picks up and accents the color. So it would depend on everything else you have in the room, as well.

You’re not the latest to the party – logged on to catch up and note that I’m sampling Le Labo Ylang 49. I don’t exactly like it: it smells much rougher to me than the reviews would suggest, but the nose finds it interesting.

It’s growing on me but when it was wet it was way too pink for my comfort zone. I’m going to live with it and see. I like it better today and for a dining room I don’t mind something a little fun and cheerful. I’d like a lipstick in this color.

meridifay – what a great quote! thanks!

These weekend threads are always a treat for me to see how they start, where and how they go.

SOTD – Chinatown, also known as my gateway drug…oops addiction…oops.. I meant fragrance!

Today would have been my dads’ 91st birthday. This is notable for the fact that he was a wonderful man who lived joyously. And on this day 51 years ago, on what was his 40th birthday, he drove my sister and me from our home in NY to Atlantic City to see The Beatles.

There we were in our Ford Country Squire w/ the wood panels heading to the convention center. How he got the tickets…$4.50 each I might add, I will never know. We waited for 3 hours on the boardwalk to get into the convention center where we screamed out heads off. I still have my program which is framed and on my wall in my office.

Every birthday card every year after that was a count back on how many years it had been since we saw the Beatles. On his 80th birthday, it was 40.

Damn, how has half a century gone by? One of the best days of our lives. Sheer joy. So, I needed to embrace my dad, who made NY a wonderland to grow up in and reached for a Bond NY fragrance. What a knockout Chinatown was and is.

I love this story! Thanks for sharing! It reminded me of the time my dad took my brother and I to see Muhammed Ali in a sparring session prior to a heavy-weight championship fight. I think those tickets were not even for sale but then again a nine-year old does not worry about tickets – just being there was a treat, and an unusual one at that.

What a nice story. Thank you for sharing. Just a couple of days ago would have been my Dad’s birthday. He was much more likely to take me to see an interesting rock formation than a concert but he always managed to make it just as much fun.
