Thursday scent of the day 8/6

Posted by Robin on 6 August 2015 146 Comments

Captain Tim's Bridge, Wellfleet, Mass.

If you have a spare moment, do tell us your fragrance of the day.

I'm commando again. It's possible I won't put on fragrance until I head home on Saturday.

Reminder: tomorrow will be Perfumer Spotlight...name a perfumer you don't think gets as much attention as s/he should, and wear one of their perfumes.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Frederic Malle En Passant. It makes me want to keep Olivia Giacobetti in my basement. In the least creepy and most humane way possible.

I started the day in wild orange EO diluted in jojoba oil, plus the wonderful remains of Aroma M’s Camellia cleansing oil (love that scene of olibanum, neroli, rosemary, and yuzu). After swimming we’ll see how Femme Rochas holds up to chlorine. Enjoy your potentially unperfumed last days of vacation, Robin!

That cleansing oil sounds lovely. Good luck with trying to combat chlorine smell- that smell lingers for days!

Thank you! I love this cleansing oil and wish the rest of the Camellia line were cheaper, because everything in it smells wonderful. When I swim as often as I should, the chlorine smell lingers until I swim again, so this is an ongoing perfumista problem.

Let us know how it works out. I’ve been experimenting with what does and doesn’t work with the un-killable traces of chlorine…and so far has been a crapshoot. Some turn downright skunky, and others prevail. No rhyme or reason!

            Sure! Some that worked:
Eau des Merveilles, Odalisque, Ambre Sultan, Mohur.

            Some that were very bad:
Narciso Rodriguez, Jour d’Hermes, Moon Bloom.

Maybe something that helps the winners is at least a vague saltiness?

Interesting. Or maybe it’s amber good, musky floral bad?

I’m in SL Cedre. It’s too heavy for this weather and too sweet for my taste, but I’m enjoying it nevertheless (when I put my tan sandals on in the morning, I simply felt that I needed to wear something woody). A cedar perfume for tuberose lovers.

Yes, I think quite a few people do. But on me, it’s actually quite woody. Or it’s also possible that as my standard for tuberose is Fracas, I find anything with less tuberose pretty woody.

          • leathermountain says:
            6 August 2015 at 6:26 pm

I don’t know. I bought a micro mini of the extrait once because it was cheaper than any amount I could find of the EdP, surprisingly. I admired it but felt like it was wearing me, so I gave it away. I suspect the EdP would wear me too, but one day I’ll try it just to make sure. Have you compared them?

    • perthgirl says:
      6 August 2015 at 10:02 am

I dont think I’ve tried Cedre, although tuberose and woods are high on my love-list. Must sample.
I was actually distracted by your mentioning of sandals, and didn’t think about the perfume. Like, sigh..how I wish it was warm and sunny and sandal weather here! I know that’s very greedy of me as it’s sandal weather 8 months of the year here and so I’ll try not to wish back the sun from keeping you warm for a couple of months ;-)

Hah! You’ve only got a few more months to cozy it up, right? I love sandals and shorts but I’m always happy in fall when it is boots and cozy sweater weather again. I love to layer – clothes and perfume – and that works best in cooler weather ;)

Yes! Sandals! It was quite thrilling to put them on, as sandal weather is rare here and always fleeting. But today is really quite nice and sunny.

I quite enjoy Cedre, enough to buy a FB. On me it’s mostly woody. Imagine my surprise when I found that most people consider it a tuberose scent!

I suspect tuberose is one of the reasons I like it, but I would not have realized it was there without prompting.

APOM today, in one of those perfectly coordinated, uplifting, match-perfume-to-the-universal-vibrations-and-emotional-climate moments that I hope will happen EVERY time I make a grab for a bottle and spritz with abandon, but alas, doesnt. (I would’ve thought with this much practice it would be a failsafe formula.) But today- perfecto :)

Me neither. It’s one of those challenges where I have to do homework to find out who the perfumers actually are, and I cant say Im in much of a homework mood. I think it will be a case of choose perfume, then hope if I dont know who made it, maybe not many people will? :)

Like small pancake, but much thicker. You might know them as griddle scones, perhaps. They don’t have a lot of taste in themselves — they’re mostly a medium for eating jam and cream…

I don’t know who the perfumers are for most of my scents by the bigger name companies – might be easier to think of any indie/smaller niche lines with perfumer in charge (PdN, SSS, DSH, Aftelier, smell bent, Tauer). But those are mostly pretty well known also, here on NST. Hmmm.

So far I’ve put on three scents. I tried Eternity, which I got last month as a mini. Hated it. I was in a hurry so I did a quick spray on my shirt of Dame Perfumery’s Mandarin, Neroli and Cedar. However when I got to work I went ahead and put Rose Anonyme on my pulse points. Now I am very over perfumed, and I’m going to go wash everything off. It probably won’t totally go away, but it may tone the smell down.

I love Bois d’Iris. On me, it starts with a little dry wood, then a pretty powdery iris kicks in and hangs around. Over time the the wood gets smoother, and the iris sweetens with vanilla, which then sort of alternate back and forth for a loooong time, getting closer and closer to the skin… Right now I am getting mostly vanilla and flowers, in a while it will be more sweet woods…when I am directly comparing them, IP smells better than this, but on it’s own, this is one of my favorite scents.

Aerin Evening Rose is my SOTD. I have a small sample. Very pretty, spicy rose.

This week its seems like I’ve tried more samples than I usually try. Its been fun.

    Happy Thursday!

I’m trying Visa, because I got a pretty large sample of it in a swap. I don’t really know anything about it, which I guess is good – no prejudice to sway my opinions! It’s much sweeter than I anticipated, it’s like candy (at least so far)!

I’ve been working on learning my individual perfume ingredients by scent alone. Since they all come in identical bottles, all I have to do is put them in a bowl and take off my glasses before grabbing… can’t read the labels then so I can’t cheat ;)

Some of the scents are tricky, some are easy to learn. Civet does not require multiple sniffs to ‘learn’ that one… lol

This spring, I caved and bought a bottle of Visa. The SA told me that it was the first bottle of Visa she had ever sold in fifteen years working there. Didn’t quite know how to take that comment, lol! But I couldn’t resist the peach, rose and leather combo.

I haven’t blind-sniffed much either except for the unexpected sample from Dame Perfumery tossed in with an order. Except the fragrance was called “passion fruit, orange blossom, and Vetiver” which didn’t leave much to the imagination.
Visa, I found to be a very sweet and over-ripe fruit powder. I felt like it needed a twist of lime or something.

Turning my attentions to the mountain of neglected samples. Today’s pick is a wax sample of Lutens Santal de Mysore. I’m getting sweet spicy butter, and can’t quite decide if that is pleasing or not.

It’s sandals and shorts weather here today, too, perfect for Bvlgari Omnia Coral, my favorite summer playful scent. Its tart pomegranate adds such a nice refreshing touch to the hibiscus and says, Summer fun! Regardless of what I’m wearing or the activity of the day, I just can’t do serious scents in the summer. Missionista mentioned the other day she was wearing pretty much only citrus and non-indolic floral scents at this time, and I fully understand. Except for an occasional evening foray into Songes, I share her summer fragrance philosophy.

I’m basking in Shalimar today. The best part of Shalimar is the drydown. I don’t know why but the top and middle can be kind of annoying but I just adore the drydown. After my shower, I think that I will switch to Shalimare Ode a la Vanille.

I’ve liked it more each time I’ve tried it, but I still don’t quite like it… it’s a bit too polite, I think. But it was a good choice for today’s schedule of meetings!

I am sampling By Kilian Smokes for the Soul and I cannot smell it at all… I can only smell alcohol evaporating from my hand and then nothing… nothing at all… It scares me… I think my nose is ok, or it can smell Dzongkha, which was next on my list (and I rushed to it scared that my sense of smell is wiped out) My husband said that it is a nice smell.. so he can distinguish it, but I cannot… why? has this happened to anyone else? this is my first time of not being able to smell perfume… so strange….

It happens! I can’t smell Serge Lutens Musc Koublai Khan. Supposed to be a famously stinky fume, but for me: air. Nada. Makes me worry a bit that other musks I really enjoy might be secretly stinky too, though so far nobody has made faces around me when I wear them ;)

Almost the same here: I can smell a little of MKK, but definitely not all of it. Also, a couple of years ago I tried a Carolina Herrera fragrace (I have forgotten the name) and could not smell anything at all. I believe it’s pretty common, although not something everybody experiences.

With MKK, if I literally snort my arm (sooo elegant), I can get the teeniest tiniest hint of …something… feral. And that’s if I put a LOT on. ha!

I think sometimes the perception differs and some people pick one aspect of a perfume over the other, or something like this….I also heard that some people do not pick up certain musks… so this is expected.. but still not a hint of what suppose to be a full on olfactory experience made me feel strangely naked in a room of fully dressed up people, so to speak..
oh well, thank you for speaking up, I am glad it happens and I do not need to screen my nose with X-rays or something of that sort:)

SOTD is Donna Karan Woman, vetiver-y sandalwood-y orange blossom-y goodness. I accidentally sprayed my shirt sleeve so it’s gonna be an all-day affair, for sure. (I blame the distraction of that Klingon bottle for the spray-miss)
