Happy Tuesday! What fragrance are you wearing?
I am commando again this morning. Last night I wore Dawn Spencer Hurwitz La Danse des Bleus et des Violettes.
Reminder: this Friday, 8/7, will be Perfumer Spotlight...name a perfumer you don't think gets as much attention as s/he should, and wear one of their perfumes.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Morning !
The dregs of Angel EDP from last night and morning spritzes of No 5 EDT now.
You smell divine!
Love your profile icon!
Wow- you smell LOVELY.
No 5 edt is gorgeous & so is your new icon!!!
Vanille Galante. My BFF is bringing me 2 travel sprays from Amsterdam (the other 2 are Osmanthe Yunnan) and I happily drained my decant today.
What a lovely BFF and lovely goodies on their way! ๐
She is! The perfumes aren’t the only reason I am looking forward to seeing her again (it’s been a year since the last time).
Way too long! Seeing dear old friends is so good for the soul. Hope you have a great catch-up ๐
Thank you!!!
I’m trying Gucci Bamboo today. I received a small sample with a recent fragrance purchase. It’s pleasant so far.
I sniffed the bottle at the shops recently. I’m not sure how it’s related to bamboo at all, and I cant remember exactly what it smelled like, but it was pleasant enough (for a modern mainstream release). No involuntary face contorting reflexes ๐
Yep. I’m not sure how they came up with the name Bamboo for this one.
It’s one of their handbags.
But of course, the visual connection.
I learned something new today ๐
It is a pretty bottle. I’ll have to look up the bamboo handbag on the internet.
I tend to wear dark complex roses (Nahema, Fille de Berlin, Rose de Nuit, etc.) but this spring and summer have been sampling lighter roses for hot weather. So far my favorites are Diptyque l’ombre dans l’eau and Annick Goutal’s Quel Amour, Rose Splendide, and Ce Soir ou Jamais. SOTD is Ce Soir ou Jamais – so pretty. How will I decide?
Goutal’s Rose Splendide is another gorgeous light rose.
Le Galion La Rose is also very pretty! ๐
That one is pretty – aquatic rose. Very light, great for summer
Quel Amour is so pretty!
1:1 comparison!
Day one; put any one scent on one hand, and any other one scent on the other. Wear all day long – see which one you like best over time.
Day two: Put Day one Fave on one hand, and any other scent on the other – wear and compare – at the end of the day, which one is better?
Day three: Put Day two Fave on one hand and any other on the other and compare.
Day four: repeat at will.
At the end, you will have the one that simply smells the best to you at this point in time, and maybe some other one that smells really good, but didn’t beat the fave, and some others that just didn’t make the cut…
I did this with the iris’s: IP is the #1, VCA Bois d’Iris and Scent of Hope are up there, ISM is on the verge, and the others I had just didn’t measure up! This helps me stay disciplined about which FBs to acquire, and to help me understand the notes that I really do like the best…
I love this!
Great method – I’m not sure I’m that organized but I’ll give it a shot.
I find this type of organized procedure oh so satisfying! Thanks for the tip!
Great tip. Now I hope I’ll remember by Day 4 what I was doing. Thanks, meredifay!
I’m the same way with my roses, but I’m having a more summery rose moment. Love Ce Soir ou Jamais, but must try Quel Amour and Rose Splendide.
Ce Soir ou Jamais is gorgeous – deep and complex. It’s one of my fav “super roses”. I also like Rose Splendide for a lighter greener rose.
Teo Cabanel Early Roses is a pretty, light rose. Good for hot weather, methinks.
Today I had an appointment so wore some Breath of Blossom by Tinderbox, a pretty all natural floral. Tinderbox are a West Australian company operating from a small town down south, and they have a range of face and body products, perfumes and essential oils. I just bought more of their fantastic face scrub which I used to use religiously when I was a teenager. For some reason I forgot all about it so it’s been a delight to re-discover it.
Further to the last couple days Outlander conversation, if anyone has read the books or watched the series- I started reading the books today and on page 7, Claire is lamenting what was unavailable during the war- notably her L’Heure Bleu cologne..
I think you will enjoy the books. I read them eons ago when I was just a young whippersnapper. Where does the time go? If I remember right, I think I read the first 3 in the series and then lost track, so am totally unsure of the story line. I can’t wait to get to the second season! Maybe I should dive back into the books? I will have to sniff L’heure Bleu since it’s mentioned…
I love perfume references in books. Especially when I know what it smells like!
She sure makes the case for backup bottles. ๐
True! lol on the backup bottles!
I re-read your comment Siciliana. I originally thought you meant her traveling back in time, and taking some extra bottles of L’Heure Bleu with her to Scotland in the 1700’s.
That too… ๐
L’Heure Bleu is also mentioned in a book I read about six months ago — The Soldier’s Wife by Margaret Leroy.
The main character receives a bottle of it as a gift, and she remarks how beautiful it smells.
I’m wearing La Traversee du Bosphore, which I’m loving. It’s very sweet, but good sweet.
I love all these old postcards that you are using!
Thank you! And thank you to the Boston Public Library for putting them all on flickr.
I keep going back to yesterday’s scent of the day post, just to look at that picture of that little library/house. I think I need to build one just like it! I wonder where I could find more information about it…
You could try contacting the Orleans Historical Society, the Friends of the Snow Library, or the library itself. A little bit of text is provided with these photos:
http://www.orleanshistoricalsociety.org/Collection_Sparrow/018_library.html
Go to http://www.localarchives.org/snowlibrary/search.aspx, and search by “library.”
TdB is very pretty! I like it when the weather is cool.
I love TdB! I agree with AnnS, it’s so nice to wear in the fall. It is definitely sweet, but I found that it’s also sort of light and veil-y.
Orange Sanguine. Again. Getting close to the end of my 7.5mL mini. I’m starting to feel like a broken record–all I wear these days are light citruses and some non-indolic florals.
Perfect scents for summer though!
For me, it’s nice to hear what scents others wear regularly. I don’t mind a song on repeat ๐
I’m wearing Smell Bent Debonair Eau Dandy, a very nice lavender and lemon cologne, and I’d say Brent Leonesio counts as an under-attentioned perfumer.
I just kind of decided about a month ago that it was long overdue for me to get some more samples from Smell Bent. I love how he sells those well priced 5 ml decants! I got some years ago that I really enjoyed, esp. Never Never Land.
Debonair Eau Dandy was one of the samples I got a few weeks ago. I liked it too! It has a very nice citrus opening and lots of herby-lav. It would be good in a super sized 10 oz+ bottle to use like I use 4711 from the fridge. I also got samples of Disco Nap (a really great super plushy dry vanilla), Cocoa Rose (so wet & delicious!), and One (not as booky as I’d hoped, but soft and pleasant).
In celebration of the sunshine and lack of rain, SOTD is CSP Coco Figue! It’s just so happy! ๐
I opened my brand new bottle of Boxeuses this morning and am – not surprisingly – wearing that. It’s cool here again (it was hot yesterday, it’s very confusing) and it works perfectly. Beautiful.
Twins today! Boxeuses is fantastic. Enjoy the new bottle!
So nice to have a twin and to smell so good!
i wanna bottle too!
What can I say – you really should get one ๐
You smell wonderful!
Thank you, AnnS! So do you, Fleurs de Sel is very nice.
When I got my bottle of La Myrrhe in 2012 Boxeuses was one of my options too. I skin tested La Myrrhe, Boxeuses and De Profundis that day. As I preferred the late drydown of LM it became my bottle of choice but Boxeuses did give it a run for it’s money. And isn’t it just great to have a bell jar or two in your collection?
Somewhat surprisingly, La Myrhhe was a strong contender for me, too, together with Sarrasins. And while I haven’t been thrilled with Serge’s latest creations, there are still many among the older ones I’d love to own. Paradoxically, bell jars are actually one reason I don’t have more – the bottles are beautiful, but I love to spray.
I love Sarrasins, one of the more intriguing jasmines. I prefer spraying, but prefer the bell jars as containers. My spray bottles of Lutens let the fragrance evaporate so they are now covered in parafilm which I have to peel off every time I use them.
I haven’t tried any of the latest Serges, my latest try being La fille de Berlin. Have you tried Fumerie Turque?
100 degrees today with the humidity factored in and I am going to wear my Mona di Orio Oud sample. This is an older sample that a benevolent fellow fumee generously passed on to me so I think it is the original Les Nombres D’or Oud. I have Vanille, Musc, Ambre, Rose Etoile D’Hollande and Amytis. The Oud is deliciciously savory, more like a cocktail, not a huge amount of projection on me. An edible, quiet oud.
Do any of you also use white pepper? When I open my white pepper my first impression is a warm, animal smell. Not the zing of black pepper. White pepper is what my nose is getting with Mona’s oud.
You’re right! I have the coffret, so just went and dabbed a little of the Oud on my hand. Definitely white pepper. Yum. I always forget about this oud..
Seville a l’Aube always makes me happy! What a great scent….
You smell awesome!
And you have great taste!
This is so far my summer of sampling so today I have Sartorial from Penhaligon on one hand and Lil from Olympic Orchids on the other. So far neither seems to be a me scent. Will probably go to Anthropologie later to sniff their newest
I have trouble with Lil. After several testings I am still getting cilantro and car exhaust. I think it is just this fragrance since I love other Olympic Orchids perfumes and think Ellen Covey is an under appreciated nose.
I’m getting industrial floor polish from Lil
On my Vegas trip, Sartorial was my favorite of the Penhaligons. But it got eclipsed by other choices/brands.
SOTD: Kouros Eau de Sport “vintage” (YSL).
Taking advantage of a few weeks between jobs to wear big scents at home! SOTD is Carnal Flower.
Love CF! My 5yr old, who rarely comments on my perfumes, loves it. Hubby does too. You smell great!
I over did this one recently with a couple of sprays while at Barney’s and it gave me a massive headache. Ugh. I do love it but I hate head pain being associated with it.
Carnal Flower is so big and perfect! It’s my fav tuberose. I’ll confess I can only wear it in very small doses.
SOTD is Wit, so pretty!
Epitome of pretty! You smell delicious!
Wit is very pretty! It’s also so wearable. I really love Amoureuses, but I can only wear it when I’m in the right mood. Wit seems like one of those spray and go super mood lifting fragrances. I enjoy my small sample for sure.
I have to be in the right mood for Amoureuses, too, because it relaxes me and puts to me sleep every time. I love to wear it in the late evening so I can fall asleep with it.
Wit, on the other hand, I can wear all day long. Such a happy fragrance!
The very last drops of my decant of Caron The Third Man. Citrus and lavender, perfect for a gross muggy day like today. It’s almost the only thing keeping me human.
I’ve loved that every time I’ve smelled it.
Also, I just saw that movie – The Third Man – at Film Forum in Manhattan last week. I’d forgotten just how fantastic it is.
Wearing my decant of Aerin Rose de Grasse. I am almost never one for “fresh” scents, but this is a nice fresh rose that seems to me to suit the weather. Definitely huffing my wrist right now.
I recently had a chance to smell this one, and I was surprised by how much I liked it! You smell lovely!
I haven’t smelled this yet!
I actually won a bottle of this from NST. I get soooo many compliments when I wear it. It is a light, clean, beautiful fragrance.
Wit got me thinking of pretty perfume. Passarelle in particular, by Tommi Sooni. It was in limited distribution and strangely not available in Aus, being an Australian brand an’ all… Anyway.. planned on getting some from Parfum1 (because SO PRETTY!) but gone. Twisted Lily: gone. Emailed them: bounced back. Hmm. I wonder does anyone know what happened? Are they no longer?
Twisted Lily is definitely still around. Any chance the email address was mistyped?
My mistake- that was badly written. I meant I emailed Tommi Sooni but it was rejected. It’s a bit of a worry.. I do hope things hadnt turned so bad that one shuts up shop and vanishes into thin air!
I just called Twisted Lily, perthgirl. They don’t anticipate being able to offer any of the Tommi Sooni fragrances any longer. According to the SA I spoke with, the founder Steven Broadhurst has dropped out of sight and no one knows what has happened.
Thanks Holly, for your super sleuthing ๐
That’s what I suspected… very odd. It’s like the whole Tommi Sooni thing has just disappeared into a black hole. Sad ๐
AdP Iris Nobile EDT again today. Definitely NOT the work of under-appreciated perfumers – Francoise Caron and Francis Kurkdjian get lots of love, and deservedly so. I’m going to have trouble with the Friday challenge this week. Mount Sample doesn’t include very many “unknowns”, it seems. Will have to dig deep.
Twins! I love the EDT. The EDP is very nice too, but not quite the same…
Hi twin, and I agree completely! I tried the EDP first and thought it was nice, but the EDT is just a beautiful, all-season wonder.
Sheri, I was thinking the same thing about Friday’s challenge. It really will be a challenge for me this week!
I’ll be interested to read everyone’s posts that day, for sure!
I haven’t posted here in a while. Working 300+ hours in a month will do that though. I’m unscented now but last night I wore lush smugglers soul. I really do like the stuff so I decided to see if it’s reached North America yet. I want the liquid version to go along with my solid from Japan. I went on the lush website and saw that volume three is still not available. Darn it. There’s more bad news. Lush is discontinuing a bunch of their products. Two shower gels will be axed: Grass and Flying Fox. I know these two have a lot of fans on here so if you can’t live without them you might want to stock up.
They’re my 2 favourites!!! NOOO!!! Devastating!!! ๐
Yes, I heard rumours, but refused to believe – these are the two best products they have. I absolutely adore both.
And I hope your work situation is getting more sustainable. I’ve just come through a similar, totally insane period, so I sympathise. This is the second OK week for me, though, so I’m recovering.
OMG those are literally my two favorite scents! ๐
What on earth?! Everyone loves Flying Fox. I wonder if they’re just redoing the packaging….
Perhaps they’ll make Rose Jam year-round as a consolation?
One can hope!
SAY WHAT.
Looks like I will be stocking up on both Grass and Flying Fox- both a great to shower with AND hen wear with Chanel 19 (Grass) or Chanel 5 (Fox). Or just enjoy the scent on it’s own.
Sympathies on work overload… theoretically I have a 5 day a week job, but for the past eon, it’s been more like 7 days a week, 12 hours a day. The joys of being an engineer in Silicon Valley.
Planning to sneak out early today, though, and go sniffing at Nordstrom’s….
I asked for some details at my LUSH today. Flying Fox is definitely axed, Grass was on the maybe list but it seems they are slowing the supply which means it too is leaving. One advantage of being so far behind everyone else, she said ours wont be completely gone until January, when the replacements arrive. There will be shower creams and powder scrubs. One of the shower cream scents is Lord of Misrule, but I cant remember the other. The Godmother soap (the rose jam scented one) is also going. Booo!
Today is Chanel 31 Rue Cambon. When I first got my sample, I felt it was too “womanly” for me, Beige was more my speed. However, it’s been growing on me like crazy. And now I’m wearing it to work, just a spritz or two, and it’s making me happy! I feel like if Audrey Hepburn were still around, this would be her new signature frag.
That scent makes me quite happy too ๐
I say it all the time, but no matter – it is the best office scent I know. And beautiful!
When I first tried it, I got that “womanly” vibe too. This makes me want to give it another try. I’ll wear it to work tomorrow.
Rue Cambon is definitely more voluptuous, and similar in intent though not form, to Coco. It seems big and forward and confident. I wish they’d get back on that train for more LEs.
I just ordered a decant of this without smelling it first! I know surprisingly little about Chanel beyond Coco Mademoiselle and Chance (and its flankers), which for better or for worse are the Chanels of my generation. I’m looking forward to this one.
I adore 31RC. I would wear it more often, but that I don’t want to build associations with anything dull, repetitive or annoying, which is to say: work at the moment. I agree that it is womanly, but not, I feel, as the result of the endeavours of a group who sat around wrestling to find the best way to appeal to women-wanting-to-be-womanly. It’s just excellent in every way: well designed but not over-stated; elegant, but not stripped bare. To me it speaks of the sophistication and confidence I aspire to but may never achieve.
I just realized how sexist “womanly” sounds — I guess when I first started sampling perfumes, 31 Rue Cambon smelled like something my mother’s friends might wear — there’s not much this sophisticated and bold out there in mass market. Now, it makes me feel “womanly” in the classiest and sophisticated of ways!
I am sampling organic perfumes this week, Vamp a New York last weekend, quite a sexy scent, and now Sharini’s Musc d’Hibiscus. The hibiscus refers to seeds, not flowers. At first this is a tropical ylang-ylang scent, but it develops in a very skanky jasmine. I don’t know if I have ever worn such a skanky perfume!
I’m wearing the original Bottega Venetta and am amazed at how scent really helps lift my spirits and helps with my outlook on life. It’s such a simple pleasure and yet… it holds much power.
It does, doesn’t it! Not sure how i would have gotten through the trials and tribulations of the past couple years without it. Nothing terrible, really, but the exploration of scent and self was just what i needed – a boost and a positive place to put my focus. Love it!
I wore some of the dry body oil of BV to bed the other evening. It is just so well done. One of my most favorite recent releases. It’s a real go-to.
I adore BV. It is the only perfume that I consistently get compliments on when wearing. Tough luck to all my niche favs which rarely garner any notice:(
Wearing the tiniest dab of Ava Luxe’s Nude Musk today.
Not sure why I even bothered to wear a perfume today since it’s so hot. I put a very liberal dosing of La Chasse aux Papillons, thinking I’d be bombing people at first when I got in the office. Unfortunately, the circuit breaker tripped AGAIN and so the AC wasn’t even on and my office felt like a sauna, so my perfume was zapped immediately. Also, I had to run a lot of errands this morning and have been sweating like crazy in this heat. Cannot wait to be in our new office next week where we’ll have regular arctic AC.
I hope the heat clears out and the AC works soon!!!
Thanks AnnS. It cools down roughly midday here *eyeroll*, but luckily we will be in a new office soon. It’s just very annoying to be so hot and stuffy for the first half of the work day until the piss poor AC unit works.
When you mentioned your A/C woes, I recall that you work for a real estate related company. I can’t help but think that for a company that sells or rents out comfortable spaces, they are doing a piss poor job of walking the talk! Kind of like the Shoemaker’s children not having shoes.
Alien Essence Absolue today, layered over the body balm.
Mmmmmm you smell good!
Thank you!
Double Yum!!!!!!!!!! I get all swoony at 5 hours when the never ending gorgeous base kicks in.
If you like body products you really should try the body balm. It is wonderful. It’s not even really necessary to layer with the perfume. I do because of course it lasts longer, and I never feel totally put together until I’ve sprayed something.
snort. I read this as ‘lip balm’ not ‘body balm’, and thought: Alien chapstick???? oh my!
The new Dawn Spencer Hurwitz scents sound lovely. I’m such a sucker for art-as-fragrance-inspiration. How do you like it?
I’m in Bvlgari Omnia Amethyste today. I was running late this morning, reached into my shelf o’perfume, and grabbed the first thing I felt. You know, it doesn’t get love, but I think there’s something nice about this one’s quiet, innocent simplicity.
Did a quick spritz of AG Les Nuits d’Hadrian, first thing in the morning. Got an unexpected impression of the old (60s-70s) Dana Ambush solid perfume stick. Those solids had a glycerin base (translucent) and were very cooling in summer.
Wow, I remember those things…
Nice to have company….
I am wearing Comme des Garcons cologne citrico layered with Songes body oil and I love this combo, fresh and tropical at the same time.
Fresh + tropical is one of my favorite combinations, too. I love Eau de Guerlain over Terracotta le Parfum.
I ended up in Chanel no. 5 eau premiere. The weather cooled off, which is giving the city a nice break.
You smell wonderful!!!
Why, thank you!
SOTD = FM Iris Poudre
I wore this yesterday. Why mess with a good thing?
My thought precisely!
It’s great to start out with, and then that dry down is just so lovely…
This one seems to have a huge amount of fans. I need to try it.
Robin, thank you for those lovely antique images. I’ve really been enjoying them.
Blue skies and blue water are calling my name today. Post swim, I’ll bask in the blue juice of EL Azuree Soleil Eau Fraiche Skinscent.
It’s National Night Out day across the nation (community-police awareness). Tonight I’ll be volunteering at my community’s event, hope you all get out and see what’s happening in your neighborhoods!
I’m so glad!
Cooled down weather- now this is the summer weather that I like- high 70s- low 80s. My Eaude Vert from Anthropologie was perfect this morning. Afternoon I think I will refresh with Blackcurrent and Bay from Jo Malone.
Happy Tuesday Everyone! My SOTD is Tom Ford’s Black Orchid. I received this from a lovely NST Reader. When I first smelled this, my thought was this was one powerful scent! I liked it and it was nice enough. This is my second time trying it and I spritzed freely this morning! I absolutely love it! Fabulous fragrance! Why should I expect anything less from Tom Ford?
My SOTD is a sample of Guerlain aqua allegoria herba fresca — Luca Turin calls it a “weird mint” in Perfumes: The Guide, which makes me laugh. Is it weird that I would wear this scent to the gym, and I don’t mean that as an insult?
Twins! I didn’t realize this one was in the guide. I do love it – seems like it would be great at the gym (if I ever went!).
This was the scent that sent me down the rabbit hole! I still think it’s excellent, and there’s not much out there like it. It’s perfectly cooling in the summer, yet the iciness of the wintergreen is great in the winter. I like to layer it with Demeter Thunderstorm sometimes to give it a little dirty oomph.
Were there a contest for good gym scents, I would think this one is a winner! ๐
Commando all day and now in Kiki edp. Getting lots and lots of calming lavender ๐
oh, yes, Kiki is good!
And passionfruit! Such a great scent!
I reached into my samples jar and picked out a very old vial of Miller Harris Fleurs de Sel that I haven’t put on for years. I remember liking it then, and I sure do like it now! I got some sort of rose-mirage out it if, which was interesting b/c there is no rose there. I love all those herbs and the oakmoss. Such a great fragrance.
Sampling Chanel No 22 again. I’ll confess that this one doesn’t work for me. It’s too shrill for the first few hours, probably due to the incredibly huge blast of aldehydes, and now the heart basically smells like White Linen and new balloons.
I had exactly the same reaction, though I hadn’t articulated the element of new balloons! The moment I read your description, though, I knew it was the thought I was struggling to capture.
Fabulous description! Obviously it didn’t work for me either…
I think it’s a great description and I love No 22. Go figure!
Ha ha!
Ha! I get the smell of cola from No. 22. I need to try that sample again.
Greetings and salutations, NST. Have been worrying to the point of a migraine about a couple of work situations, so didn’t sleep well or enough, then woke late: now time is short and the day is full, so my shoes are flat, my clothes mean business, and my perfume is the bracing and beautiful 19. Again.
Love this!
Yes, thank goodness Chanel made 19! Whatever would I do without it?
I definitely need to try 19.
I’m sampling Lush Smugglers Soul. If there is a sandalwood smuggler in there, he’s attempted to disguise his trade with baby powder. ๐ The main thing I smell is the same baby powder musk I get in Lush Rose Jam. I wonder if I’m hyperosmic to that particular musk, or if it just smells different to me than it does to other noses.
I love your “sandalwood smuggler”!
I wish I could take the credit, but it appears to be a Lush graphic novel:
http://thecandyperfumeboy.com/tag/the-smugglers-soul/
For their next graphic novel, I’d like to see them stalk the wild baby powder musk. ๐
I struggled to find the sandalwood in all that powder too.
Cold day here (though a clear sky so the early morning is bright), hectic day at the office coming up, so I feel the need for something hefty – a small spray of Mad Madame, from Juliette has a Gun. I gave a small decant to a colleague a while back, she admired the perfume and was hugely amused at the perfume name.
Today I am wearing Calvin Klein Beauty. Not crazy about this one. It’s rather boring and I agree with the NST review. Imo, it could really have lived up to it’s name if some effort and thought had gone into it.
Took me forever to decide. Nothing felt right! I put on Clair de Musc. Dirty angel wings is really working for me today ๐
Clair de Musc has turned into one of my go-tos when I can’t decide what to wear. You smell lovely!
That would be a good Community project – Go To Fragrance Friday – what you wear when you can’t decide on what to wear.
+1 for Go To Fragrance Friday
AA Herba Fresca for me today – it’s a warm one here and it seemed to go with my green shirt.
????
I once heard A You Tuber reviewer say that Herba Fresca smelled just like a mojito. Sounds h
Good to me.
Since we started the day with a huge thunderstorm followed by hot, humid weather, I went with Flora Nymphea. It seemed like a good idea this morning for some reason.
I have loved this postcard series not so much for the architecture of the day but for the cards’ illustrations, so different from today’s hyperphotoism. Thank you, Robin. My SOTD was EL Knowing.
Started out with 21 Rue Cambon on one hand and Bas de Soie on the other before I went swimming. Loving Rue Cambon more and more. Bas de Soie strikes me so much as what Marlene Dietrich would have worn. Now have Iris Poudre on one hand and Lys Mediterranee on the other. Unfortunately, both are scrubbers on me. Iris Poudre is too sweet for me, and LM is Just.Too.Much. Wonder if hubby will like 21RC?
Putting my back into a serious book tidy/purge. Halfway through and I needed a scent… Turns out that Dzing is the only one that felt quite right, though I never entirely ‘got’ the connection between it and decaying paper… Must be something there!
Me neither! ????
And yet it fitted right in and felt exactly right: as if all that old book-paper just had an enhanced spiciness ๐
Best wishes on your book tidy! It’s hard to give them up when so many books are like old friends.
I recently let go of more than 200 titles. The books I kept seem more important to me now. I feel pretty good about my progress, but I soon remembered I have about 25 knitting books in storage. Time to let many of those go, too.
It’s funny that I have only one book on perfume. It’s Perfume: the Art and Science of Scent. I think I’ll keep that one. ๐
So many complicating factors… Many of my books are classics and so even those I don’t like much (like the dreary Jude the Obscure), I feel like I need to keep as being part of the ‘canon’. And others I read when I most likely was too young to appreciate them, so I need to keep those too. And then there are special interests that I could become re-interested in (like my books on beading, the occult, learning to draw…) And worst of all, the many books I haven’t got around to reading at all, and which suddenly seem very interesting!
From my first and smallest bookcase I’v only managed to cull one shelf, which is 20%. Perhaps I will do better on the next ones. And maybe I need to be wearing something more severe ๐
Hey, a whole shelf, or 20%, that’s great! Imagine if you could do that well with your other larger bookcases.
Thanks for the encouragement. I was keeping so much that didn’t immediately strike me as ‘joyous’ that I assumed I was not doing a very good job! On with it then ๐
Sample of the day is Creed Jasmal, which again proves that, although I love jasmine flowers, I have far to go to find a jasmine fragrance I can wear happily.
*sigh*
But it’s great fun searching!
Have you tried AG’s Songes? That one is great soft marrying of vanilla and jasmine — and while I am a Jasmine adorer, I don’t much care for vanilla generally. This, however, is perfect.
Oh, yesssss, Songes is amazing. I love it more for the vanilla and ylang-ylang than for the jasmine.
I’m with you on that. In fact given how many jasmine scents I struggle with, I was quite surprised to discover how beautiful the flowers smell. To me, not much like A La Nuit, which is often described as ‘sticking ones nose straight into a bouquet of jasmine’. Like, really?
Songes is a little heady for me. Lust is too dirty. Jasmine Rouge smells like freshener (I don’t get any of the spices). I don’t find the Bulgari jasmines appealing. Years and years ago I really like the Givenchy Harvest editions and they had a gorgeous jasmine, but that was before I was seriously enthusiastic about scent and I didn’t buy any even when they went on sale before being discontinued!
I understand there is an idea among many perfume lovers that A La Nuit is a “photorealistic” jasmine, but I don’t really like to wear it. It smells great on me for a few minutes, but then it smells kind of fatty or oily and cloying, still pretty, but not like a flower.
My neighbor has a jasmine vine with flowers that really do match up with the scent of A La Nuit, so I have to admit it’s a fair comparison.
There is definitely something missing from the jasmine perfumes though, so the search continues. Someday when I find “the one” I will let you know!
(Gosh I wish the Givenchy Harvest editions would come back.)
I love A La Nuit, but agree it can become a little cloying.
I find too, that it matches the smell of jasmine- the one with the clusters and small pink buds.
I find that Lust and Olene however, whilst jasmines too, are what sambac jasmine smells like. More ham and indoles ๐
Yes, I guess the many species of jasmine mean the one I most recently smelled was not the one A La Nuit was based on. Still, I can’t remember smelling flowers that had a smell I DIDN’T like, and certainly I don’t like many jasmine scents – even photorealistic ones. Then again – I ADORE the smell of roses, and while I love many rose perfumes I have never found one that can match the smell of a real rose!
Last weekend I had a sprig of jasmine in my pocket from a friend’s place and visited Lush to compare it to Lust. Granted, it may have been a different species but there was NOTHING dirty about the sprig of jasmine.
