Tuesday scent of the day 7/21

Posted by Robin on 21 July 2015 189 Comments

Giverny, water lily

Happy Junk Food Day! Do have some fries with that. And do tell us what fragrance you're wearing.

I'm in Dawn Spencer Hurwitz Giverny in Bloom (fragrance announcement coming up shortly).

Reminder: this Friday, 7/24, will be Perfume Surprise Friday...wear a fragrance you expected to hate but loved, or, give another chance to a perfume you expected to love but hated, or surprise us with another interpretation of "perfume surprise".

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Today I am wearing Andy Tauer’s Incense Rose which isn’t resinous in the traditional sense. It’s more on the fresher side .

Ohhh! JFD! I think I covered that yesterday when I made Magic Cookie Bars then demolished half the pan. Ooopsie!

SOTD generous dousing of Guerlain Vetiver to try and beat back the combined effects of heat, humidity, and hyperglycemia ;)

        They are pure evil!

        Melted butter, topped with-
Crushed graham crackers (I used the chocolate Graham’s) topped with-
        Chocolate chips
Butterscotch chips (I use peanut butter chips)
        Walnuts
        Shredded coconut
Sweetened condensed milk (I use non-fat to ease my guilt)
Bake for half an hour, cool, eat…try to stop after just one-Impossible!
Pretty sure they are the gustatory equivalent of crack ;)

I’m testing L’Artisan Mure et Musc for the 3rd, and last, time. I get cough syrup followed by bad breath, followed by a flat soapy note :( Maybe it’s my skin, but it’s definitely not working for me.

Yeah, that’s one of the musk scents that taught me maybe I don’t love musk-centered perfumes that much.

But! I do get what i think musc et mute is trying to achieve when i wear narcisco Rodriquez for her edp. Berries, rose, lightest patchouli ever, and sweet musk.

      :)

Mure & Musc is all musk to me, don’t like it at all. Ditto for Narciso R. But the Mure et Musc Extreme is the one with the predominant blackberry note, which I love. M&M and M&M Extreme are almost two different fragrances to me

Thank you…I just wanted to say a huge thanks for all of the replies, I was soo not expecting that. I have had several, strong sharp pains ever since the manhandling. Ya can’t really move with those pains..just ice and pray they pass. I know never to go back to her. She weighed like 90 lbs and threw me around like Mighty Mouse. You want to here something kind of funny though? When she did that grueling adjustment…she used so much force…that when she pulled my leg back….she farted. I thought oh man…that was probably way to harsh if she busted out gas from it. Sure enough…it was insanely painful. This place was supposed to be all holistic and gentle, my eye. I have 3 bruises and swelled like a bumpy tomato..and I have a sore on my skin..like idk if she dug a nail in my skin or what..like that’s not holistic massage..ugh.

People have offered to make meals…come and pray for me…so, that’s good. It really sucks cause I was making progress and gassy lassie tore everything up…and drugs make me dopey and have strange side effects.. my yummy Jimmy John’s sandwich…tasted like tin foil with some kind of chemical dumped on it. A rare side effect but can happen..change of taste. I just wonder of those are permanent after a certain point…of course..I wondered if it effects taste…what about smell?! I grabbed my husband’s Mechant Loup, took a whiff..and was ok, ok..that is Mechant Loup still. Lol. .

probably whined way too much here..

Miss Dior Cherie is still berries with a hint of popcorn, a bit cheery I suppose….I am seeking out a decant of Un Bois Vanille..one vanilla I enjoyed upon testing.

I also bought a bottle of Indochine…honey is anti-inflammatory no?

Good to see you here today, Omega!

One thing I’d like to mention is that perhaps seeing a palliative care physician could help you. If you’re under a doctor’s care, s/he can give you a referral. I also recommend acupuncture, but of course I don’t know if you have gone that route before or if it sounds appealing to you after your recent bout with PT. I always check Yelp for reviews. I could pile on more recommendations, but that may not be something you’re up for right now.

I’m so glad you have reached out here and in your community. It’s so hard to ask for help, but it’s often necessary and I’m sure you’ll find that people are happy to be there for you. As you’ve seen here on NST, you have a lot of support and I hope that this will help in some way.

Ya, acupuncture may be something down the line, not now..but have heard many good things about it and may try it later…I have heard so many recommendations, went online so many times and got those recommendations-not good…and what to do/ what not to do from everyone around me..and those totally contrast each other all the time and medical pros contrast each other all the time..it’s like does anyone know what the heck they are talking about?! I have heard everything from arnica oil(as if)..to tumeric( totally blew up my stomach-like wow-)..and what people did after auto accidents, falls…and what their friends did..I became terribly confused and desperate to figure it all out, that it did way more than I was supposed to I think…cause I listened too much to others and trying to figure them out and to not myself. I am actually trying to de-info myself! Cause it’s caused me way more harm than good, if that makes sense. Lol. thanks though.

Hi Omega, glad you can still smell things. I’m an internal medicine doc, so can tell you that the taste disturbance with your meds is almost certainly temporary. You generally don’t have permanent changes unless taking something really harsh like chemo. Wishing you a speedy recovery. If you’re able, start moving around as soon as you can so things don’t get too stiff or weak. Hugs!

Oh thanks! Good to know…I was about to skip my dose…that’s what I figured..that it’s like a light chemo..killing the inflammation and effecting some other things as a result. what about other side effects from nsaids, same thing? like ear/hearing disturbances…etc..I’d look it up online…but again..trying to not to

The main thing you have to worry about from NSAIDs is stomach upset/ulcers. If you have any significant nausea or pain in the pit of your stomach, you may have to hold off on them or take something that blocks stomach acid like Prilosec, Prevacid or Nexium (you could do that preventively if you want). The other thing is to watch kidney function if you are on them for a long time. A few of them can affect the liver, but mostly I watch people’s kidneys. Feel free to email me if you want at brenda dot moyes (yahoo).

So glad to hear from you again today! I had PT for my back issues this morning and was thinking of you. I can imagine that some might get a little overzealous, though I found the chiropractor I used before going to PT was much more jarring, so to speak! The hardest thing for me is accepting that it isn’t going to be fixed immediately and that I can’t do everything I did before – I feel guilty having my husband do a lot of things I used to, since we have 2yo twin daughters that need a lot of attention! I am glad to hear that you have support and meals – accept them!

Jarring is the perfect word..and overzealous..like oh man, you are really messed up..I better yank on you like a truck pulling a car out of a ditch! um noo, I should have stopped her at a certain point..you know? I almost said stop, it’s a super sharp pain…and shouldn’t have been that intense…awful. Yep, I finally came to accept that this is not a quick fix…or something that will just disappear tomorrow. Depressing but..how it is. I feel so guilty too…like husband has two jobs already..then me on top of it

did you ever do a cortisone shot? Some people like those, others it only lasts a while I guess. like there would have to be such a level of trust/confidence to have someone shoot crap in your spine idk

I did get a shot a long time ago when I had different back issues, maybe 10 years ago. The process itself was fine, but it didn’t have any affect on me. It did seem like a big deal because i had to be admitted to the hospital for it, even though it was very quick and painless. I know lots of people are helped by them, so certainly worth looking into. I overheard someone in the PT office this morning talking about getting cortisone shots, so it is pretty common. I also have to remind myself to speak up – to be very stereotypical, I think women are more hesitant to question people in authority like doctors, even when we are in pain. Be assertive!

I’ve been tempted more than once to try the Heeley, but am always put off by its price. Is it worth it? Is it about to be DC’d? Will I be forever kicking myself for not having at least tried it, or is this an opportunity to NOT fall in love with another fragrance that is perpetually just out of reach? Guess there’s really only one way to find out. ;)

I don’t know if Iris de Nuit is being discontinued, but I would hope not – this is a good one. I don’t love the top notes (a lot of violet, of which I’m not always a fan) as much as the dry down. Once in the drydown, it smells to me like the color pale periwinkle, if that makes any sense. It’s dry, pretty, and clean, but not overly bright. Seems more spring to me than summer. A lovely one.

London was absolutely lovely. We went to the first night of the Proms that I enjoyed a lot (three choirs!) and saw Savage Beauty at V&A – one of the best exhibitions I’ve ever seen. I did a lot of shopping, too. The only bit that didn’t quite work out was in fact perfume: Parfums de Nicolai was closed on Sunday and in the end I had no time to go Liberty, so I didn’t purchase anything. But I did get to smell Tom Ford’s London and VC&A California Reverie that I haven’t seen in Brussels – I liked both very much.

I’ve had the same thing happen several times per summer in our old building. We moved to a new building in May of 2014, and so far it hasn’t happened here. Fingers crossed!

I’m with you, and I think it’s a great year round scent. In summer it’s cooling, in winter it’s seasonal but warming, in fall it’s harmonious, and in spring it makes a nice breather from my flower obsession. Not too many I’d describe that way!

Say, has that already been a community project topic: an all weather scent?

It’s National Day in Belgium, so I’m sitting in the garden, drinking tea, reading Gorsky and wearing L’Ombre dans L’Eau. And the junk food day thing is quite fitting, as it’s claimed fries originated in Belgium.

I believe several people in Belgium speak French, that’s my guess as to why, Idk..ketchup is more like a French Canadian thing maybe..they still have those Ketchup Lays chips up there which failed miserably here in the States. I have never wanted to try them.

I think we call them French fries because the method of cutting the potatoes is “frenching” them. That became frenched, fried potatoes. That became french fries.

SOTD = Chanel No. 19 EDP

Went to catch the train to find out there are massive delays with made up reasons (overhead wire problems, signal problems, track obstruction). Someone told me there’s extra police activity, sniffing dogs and additional random bag searches at New York Penn Station. Anyway, the good news is I was able to turn around and I am working from home. Hooray for flexibility!

I’m so excited – we have eggs! Monarch butterfly eggs, that is, on the undersides of the milkweed I planted last year. We joined the community of those trying to aid the Monarchs on their migration journey, as they only lay their eggs on milkweed plants, which were quickly vanishing across the country due to development and pesticide use. A woman in my town wrote a wonderful book for children and their parents detailing her family’s experience over the years raising Monarchs and willingly supplies milkweed from her garden as well as containers to ‘grow’ them in. Last year was disappointing as I found no eggs, but now two containers sit on my sunporch – one for each of my Little Ones – and I hope that by the time they arrive for their weekend we just might have a couple of caterpillars to watch. With luck, in the end we’ll have butterflies to release to journey and continue their next life cycle.

SOTD is L’Artisan La Chasse Aux Pappilons, the only scent that seemed appropriate! Delightfully airy and jubilantly bouyant, and so aptly named! Fortunately, the jasmine and orange blossom temper the tuberose somewhat, because even this lovely of a scent does not turn me into a tuberose lover.

Oh yay! I have happy memories of finding chrysales on milkweed pods in the pasture behind the house, and taking them to the elementary school – this was when my kids were small. All of the kindergarten and first grade classes had butterfly gardens or cages, and were able to show the children the metamorphosis process from egg to caterpillar to chrysalis to butterfly. So cool.

I do see a lot less milkweed around these days.

I had to run home at lunch today to walk the dog we’re taking care of for a friend and I used the opportunity to add a few sprays of BV Knot.
Not sure my cube-mates would appreciate however. I used to sit next to a guy that would spray cologne on before he left for the day and it was awful!

Wearing another neglected lovely today, Arquiste Boutonniere No. 7. Again, don’t know why I don’t wear this one more often.

Haven’t worn that for a few months. Must dig it out, maybe this evening. You smell great!

Gidday, NST. If I come across any Wednesday Woes today, I shall counter them with my SOTD, Traversee du Bosphore. I find it warm, uncomplicated, sweet and friendly, a cuddle from a bottle.

Dakkus-Dog-Hoople-the-Cat has just arrived with his favourite knitted mouse (it has only one eye and no tail at all anymore) and has settled down on my lap. Mmmm: a purring cat and a pretty perfume: do I really need to go out into the world today? The temptation to stay home is very great.

I was draped in melted purring kittens a few minutes ago during my mid-afternoon coffee/excuse to laze around for a minute. Makes it very difficult to get up and resume work!

It surely does. I really wish I could purr.

I eventually helped Dakkie to make a cave under the top quilt, and got up and reluctantly plodded along the road to work. I think possibly perhaps maybe I overdid the cuddle-from-a-bottle, because a security guy has just stopped by on his patrol and asked what smells like candy floss.

Ah well — if I’m rather too whiff, at least it’s nice!

I’m spending the day sweltering in the breezeway next to the garbage cans and cleaning an old (mid 60’s) gas range that is coated in antique grease. The only thing I could think of that wouldn’t clash horribly with the ambient scents was Anya’s Garden Pan EDP so I’m all lavender and goat today. Glad I remembered I had this stashed in my bag ’cause I really enjoy wearing it, even though lavender and I are usually not pals.

It’s surprisingly wearable. A bit syrupy so the lavender isn’t sharp and headache inducing and the goat hair tincture adds a nice muskiness.
If you’re in the U.S. I would be happy to send you a sample. My email is my username at gmail if you’re interested.

Humid and overcast today, so put on some PdN L’Eau Mixte. For some reason, it feels like the color green to me, so I always think it smells like limes, when it is really grapefruit. Lovely all the same!

I tried my sample of Dame Perfumery Passion Fruit, OB, and Vetiver. Very clean, tart, fruity body wash kind of smell. It only lasted about 15 minutes even after I used the entire vial. So far I’ve liked Black Flower but not enough to buy it, and Dark Horse is a nice spicy vanilla but also doesn’t grab me enough to want to own it.

Imaginary Authors’ new Air of Despair! Definitely some iris here, I think. If ISM is Betty Draper at her iciest, Air of Despair is Don Draper at his loneliest and most repentant.

Might be my new fave from IA!

ISM = Serge Lutens Iris Silver Mist, a perfumed gift to (wo)mankind.

I didn’t like it but really worth trying to get more iris exposure..I am picky with iris..so this was not my kind of iris…but it may be yours..only one way to know

ISM is generally considered a gold-standard of what a four-star perfume should be in perfumista land, which is why this particular perfume gets its own acronym. It’s shockingly gorgeous to me, but I love deep, dark, dirty irises.

Unfortunate sampling day today, Gentlewoman from Juliet etc. I just get loud clean musks from top to bottom. Like an early and resoundingly rejected mod of the often delightful Mugler Cologne.

Went hiking today, only got lost twice (people steal the trail signs, I have no idea why) so after a shower I sprayed myself lavishly with Une Fleur de Cassie. So very nice.
