Monday scent of the day 7/20

Posted by Robin on 20 July 2015 180 Comments

vie-en-rose-s

Another Monday morning, folks! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Dawn Spencer Hurwitz Fleuriste.

Reminder: next Friday, 7/24, will be Perfume Surprise Friday...wear a fragrance you expected to hate but loved, or, give another chance to a perfume you expected to love but hated, or surprise us with another interpretation of "perfume surprise"

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

As it happens I got a perfume surprise this morning — I put on Ruth Mastenbroek from a sample, a fruity chypre I remember liking, but it just smells acrid this morning, with an almost cough syrup-y vibe. Might have to scrub this one soon….

Sampling Fougere Orange Blossom from Kenneth Cory. Gorgeous– simultaneously green, deep and almost leathery on my skin. This was a surprise bonus sample that I hadn’t ordered.

I spend way too much time browsing etsy–(in 6 months I will have a stunning sculpture since the artist has agreed to let me do a layaway plan). It’s a pretty good source for natural perfumes although I wish more people offered options other than oil based

It’s OK. A reasonably nice orange blossom scent. I get a very floral honey from it pretty quickly in the development, and then it remains at very floral honey for the rest of the time it’s on. I’ll most likely finish the sample, but am not called to get a bottle. I was very happy to put something else on after it. There’s nothing at all offensive about it, I just didn’t love it.

I made my first foray into estate sale shopping this weekend – thanks Angela for your post on this, which finally made me brave enough to try it! So I am wearing the Chanel no 19 from the mostly-empty bottle that I bought.

The number one thing I noticed while trawling estate sales, though, is that people’s priorities are very different than mine! So many estates where a fortune has been spent on crystal decanters/duck figurines/toy tractors, and hardly a bottle of perfume in sight! I plan to make some perfumista very happy when I die… perhaps I’ll specify in my will that no fragrance sold at my estate sale can be priced higher than $5.

Estate sales are the best! Many have pretty perfume bottles, but few sales have actual perfumes. Indeed, other people’s priorities are unfathomable.

Indian Night Jasmine body butter on my arms this morning, and we’ll see where the day takes me, scent wise.

For those in or visiting New York, the China: Through the Looking Glass exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum is wonderful, and happens to include a tiny section of perfume bottles inspired by Chinese design. I lusted after all of them of course, and I had had no idea that Les Parfums de Rosine line existed so early in the 20th century. Well worth seeing!

It’s really about how China has been perceived in the West through the ages and the way it has influenced Western aesthetics. It incorporates more than just clothing to tell the story – bits of film, music, and some artifacts from a millenia ago. Very interesting.

It even has a section about the development of the design of Yves Saint Laurent’s Opium bottle. Fascinating stuff.

I will offer a bit of dissent on this one. I really hated the downstairs portion of the exhibit (it is spread over 2 floors), and thought it was poorly displayed, difficult to see/appreciate, and had terrible flow with several bottlenecks of people.

The upstairs portion was much better, with more interesting items (including those perfumes), and better flow. If you go, skip downstairs.

Wearing Shangri La by Hiram Green. It feels like a rich though nicely low key, all natural version of Rochas Femme (old, un-cuminized formula). This is from a sample, but I think I may need a full bottle. That would make Hiram Green 2 for 2 for FB-worthiness of their line-up for, since I already have travel spray of Moon Bloom.

Spraying on clothing works, and last week I tried spraying it in my hair at the back, which seemed to help. It actually stays fairly well on me, which I think is because my skin is oily. Maybe applying over some moisturising oil would help?

I put all my Hermes samples into atomizers, especially since they were 2 generous with them and they are big. I hate dabbing. If you just have one, fits in a 5 ml or 2 in a 10 ml!

Most Ellena’s do better sprayed. Divine Bergamote actually lasts really well, but it does stay very close to the skin. So overspraying helps.

Evening Edged in Gold. I’m making a point to wear my neglected favorites so hitting the Inekes pretty hard. I have more Ineke FBs than any other with several backups so I have absolutely no excuse not to wear them. I must admit that this one is a bit sweet in the hot weather but it’s pretty and easy to wear and it doesn’t last eons so I can switch it up this evening.
Actually, I just ordered a bottle of Ouarzazate so will probably finish up my little decant later. As much as I love the others in the Incense series, I wear this one the most. Doesn’t ever seem to get much perfumista love.

I love Ineke! I bought a full bottle of Balmy Days and Sundays a few years ago when I lived in Seattle — they sell the line at this one store in Fremont. It was a lighter fresh scent, not exactly challenging, but it was pretty and great for work. Anytime a niche line is priced under $100, I will check it out.

Balmy Days and Sundays is really nice too and one that I will probably buy if I run across a discount code or sale. I think the only ones I don’t need a bottle of are After my own Heart and Chemical Bonding. None of them are really challenging but they are interesting and well made. The price is a huge selling point and the bottles are nice, attractive, and easy to use. I can’t wait for her new one, I hope she releases it soon!

Oh no, such a heartbreaking situation. I feel you, omega, I’ve been there with health issues too.

I’m so sorry you are facing this. Mine got better with time and self care, but figuring it out was akin to peeling back onion layers. Slowly, painfully making progress.

If you want advice, mine is: stay away from dr. Internet, drink water, and feel deeply whatever you need to feel.

      Sending hugs. Xoxo

I read somewhere that some big hospital actually pipes vanilla scent into it’s recovery rooms because vanilla decreases pain perception or something like that. Put on your snuggliest vanilla frag – can’t hurt, might help.
And watch some funny movies – there is research that shows that laughter helps people heal…
      So sorry you feel bad.

Thanks guys…it’s really bad and haven’t said anything….I haven’t been mobile in over four months…I really believe that the last lady messed me up bad….I could feel her tearing the tissue. I am so worried now. And yes….too late for dr. internet advice…..I got sucked in..that’s probably why I made another p.t. appointment that I may have not needed. I don’t think she knew what she was doing, so I am injured all over again…with symptoms I haven’t had before. scariest thing in the whole world…and the saddest. I cry and sob every single day…..I don’t own any vanilla and scent doesn’t matter much to me anymore.

Omega, I can so relate to what you are going through. Being in pain and feeling helpless is the pits! I am not really sure what your situation is, but I know during my time of healing ( I had full knee replacement surgery on my right knee last summer and had a full hysterectomy this summer) I tried to keep my self busy. I had a lot of support and help from family and friends, I read a lot of good books (perfume books included) on my Kindle and hardback. I did a lot of binge-watching on shows I needed to catch up on and watched a bunch of movies on Netflix. Although it may seem useless to you, try to stay optimistic and surround your self with positive, like-minded individuals. I wish you the best and a speedy recovery.

Just read your post again and saw that you had problems with your physical therapist. Last summer after my knee surgery, I went to a physical therapist who pushed me too hard. He was so verbally abusive to me and kept telling me that I needed to toughen up. He made me get on one of those stationary bicycles before I was ready. Somehow, the leg that I had surgery on it got caught up in the foot pedal. My foot got twisted around and my knee popped out of place. I had to go back under again so they could pop it back in place. That added four more weeks to my recovery time. It was a nightmare! I became extremely depressed, felt defeated, and felt I would never get better. Well, I did. I found a new physical therapist who was fantastic and I am doing so much better. As I put in my post today, it was my first day back at the gym in probably a year and I never thought I would see this day. (I had my hysterectomy on June 10th).
So, I say all of that to say, stay strong my friend. You too will see the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. The human body is an amazing thing. We don’t give it enough credit as to what it can do. I am sending well wishes your way!

You are soo sweet…I wish I could send you something from Jo Malone..I know you love that line. that was such a sweet post..honestly I wasn’t expecting anyone to respond to my whimpering post. I am soo sorry about your knee..mine is a pretty severe injury..and not just one place but several. Anti inflammatories are devilish and side effects are crazy from ones I have tried. it’s so hard cause in four months I really haven’t seen any improvement..in fact…worse. A bad pt is a nightmare…I just hope no permanent damage was done..cause I was getting better…then she manhandled me…and I feel like the injury just happened..it’s devastating..and sometimes I want to die literally. I am soo happy you are at the gym again. I get bruising every time I am adjusted..I may just not let anyone touch me for a good while. I’d say what my injury is but how I got it was soo stupid…and quick. it’s bad when the P.A. compares it to a terminal disease..yep. I am so worried I won’t heal after that last lady…messing up 3 weeks of healing after being manhandled by another bad pt..who was soo rough with me..I needed opiates to get through after. You going to the gym gives me hope…I don’t know of the body’s strength to heal…I just hope it does…you really give me hope..though it’s not a knee injury. Sometimes I really want to give up..and I go crazy…and netflix only entertains so long..I go crazy cause days turn into weeks then into months…and I don’t feel alive. not at all. thanks again, it does give me some hope..some…I need all the hope I can get.

          Thanks

On days that you feel like giving up, you have all of us to talk to. NST wouldn’t be the same if we didn’t hear from you. You have “scented” friends here who are cheering you on. :)
            Miracles happen everyday!
Your comment about Jo Malone was very sweet.
Omega, when you get up in the morning, look into the mirror and say the following, “Today is a new day where I will get better and stronger than I was yesterday!” Speak positive words into existence and dab a little fragrance on your wrists. :)

In addition to everyone’s advice about physical therapy, please don’t hesitate to reach out to friends or even a therapist to help you cope with this difficult time. I know that chronic pain is so emotionally draining, and such a burden to carry. Please be kind to yourself and seek whatever help you need to get through and find pleasure in things again.

Omega, sending positive vibes and much sympathy your way that you will begin the healing process soon. I can only suggest that, in the meantime, you give yourself permission that it’s O.K. to be miserable, cry, and sob if that’s what you feel like doing; it’s important to respect and own our emotions. I’ve found when life throws you a curveball, sometimes it’s just best to go with it for awhile rather than pretend it’s not so bad. Be patient, stay strong, and be miserable as long as you like, knowing that eventually, it won’t be so bad, you will feel better, and one day when you’re ready, you’ll want to reach for that SOTD again.

Oh, Omega, I am so very sorry about what you are going through. You have done your part by trying PT, and don’t be afraid to ask your doctor directly what he or she is planning to do to reduce your physical pain. I can empathize with you, because I have been in constant pain for over five years because of a botched surgery on one of my lungs. The physical pain for the first year was so excruciating that I cried every day. Things that I loved didn’t interest me because nothing could distract me from the pain that went up to 11, to reference the movie “Spinal Tap.”

Anyway, for what it’s worth, know that someone in California is crying for you and hoping that you receive some relief from your suffering.

My pain is still here, but it no longer goes up to 11, and obviously, I can once again be distracted by things that I love — after all, I check NST every day :-)

Thank you for your kind words.

When the pain hits, it feels like it’s forever..that lady really messed me up..I feel so stupid going to her…oh ya, be kind to yourself..it’s hard cause I blame myself for choosing to go to a place/therapist like that…without really thinking it through maybe Idk..it’s like you assume they know what’s best even though inside is telling you something different and I feel solo stupid for not ever listening to myself…and now I am in so much pain..I worry it will never heal. Sharp pains ever since just are soo overwhelming, keep me from moving..and can’t do nearly as much as I was before this lady….I feel so stupid…an 11 huh? You must know my level of pain then. This injury prevents me from doing pretty much anything…it’s soo sad. I am glad you don’t want to die anymore…I still do…but again, I have a husband..and really he’s the main reason I haven’t just decided to die…it’s hard to keep focus on that…instead of pain and an exit….cause an exit does sound awfully good….just so it will be over with.

it’s hard to revive your mind…when all you have gotten is extremely bad news..over and over.

New scent today. Bling buy and it was instant love. Acca Kappa’s Muschio Bianco. Lavender and juniper are the main components but there’s also a high quality musk (read: doesn’t smell like laundry detergent) in the base that give it some warmth and longevity. Definitely a skin scent and would be good for days when you need a perfume that doesn’t shout. Lovely.

I enjoy Bel Respiro too, but I am gloomily aware it is a bit too young for me…too delicate, too gentle, rather innocent. I don’t know that I’m an especially awful person, but when I wear BR, I feel more like the portrait than like Dorian Grey.

That’s interesting, waterdragon! I know what you mean about wearing something “too young”, but I usually associate that with something fruity or cupcake sweet.

It’s quite likely that I’ve been inappropriate for years, though… I love delicate, gentle and innocent. Perhaps those fragrances balance out the reality. :)

Holly, I understand about the vanilla/fruit often feeling too young, but they lack the gorgeously clean innocence that I experience with BR. It’s like the start of a new day, before anybody has had a chance to go out and ruin bits of it. My problem is that it makes me think of my sundry shortcomings, and I don’t want my character to be improved by my perfume.

At least these rookies (new marching members) can keep in step… last year we had a kid who just sort of *wandered* all over the field. Looks like a good bunch of 9th graders.

Have fun! Ugh, takes me forever to recover from jet lag–hope this is the last of it.

Oh, you are bringing back so many memories of when I was in high school. I was in the marching band (played the flute during marching season and the bassoon during concert season) too. God knows I hated those HOT, long summer practices we had each day getting ready for football season. I applaud you Mals for volunteering your time.

SOTD is Iris Ukiyoe. I know it’s not the most popular, but I love it. And I get a paper like smell from it, paper and green stems and Iris :)

I’m wearing Bottega Veneta today. I tend to neglect this one for some reason, and I’m not sure why I don’t wear it more often.

I accidentally sprayed this on me one time thinking it was Knot. It just doesn’t smell good on me. Something about it just didn’t mix well on me. Do you find it difficult to wear? Maybe I should give it another shot.

I didn’t like it at first either. It is probably the patchouli, but you may like the Eau Legere. It is kind of a lighter version.

Thanks. I will add it to my “must try” list.

Good morning all. Facing a cold day in Black Cashmere and a favourite dark navy jacket because both cuddle up. BC is one of my favourite warm perfumes, with all the good woods and spices. It never fails to cheer me up, and for all it’s a complex, sophisticated scent, I never feel it wears me.

I can’t help envying your summer in the other hemisphere and all your gorgeous warm weather perfumes. Even though the days are perceptibly longer now, the cold over A-NZ is intense, and I feel I want to tap someone on the shoulder and say, “Yes, thank you, you did some rather good work on this winter, but that’s enough. I’ll take over now.” Then I would arrange a long, soft spring during which I would wear Après l’Ondee every day.

Actually, I’m very envious of you. Maybe you have already mentioned it, but where exactly do you live? I think here in Texas, it is only cold (or cool) for like one month. I despise hot weather and can’t wait for this hot weather to be over. Wanna switch places?

I live in Auckland, in Aotearoa-New Zealand, but I’m really a Northland girl transplanted to a city because that’s where the job is. Auckland isn’t even outrageously cold, not like my what my compatriots in the South Island are suffering, but I had a thing happen last year that somehow re-set my internal thermostat permanently, and now even 10 degrees C seems to me as though a mean person has shut me inside a refrigerator. It’s colder than that here today!

Blistering hot today, but I had to put my foot down with the lazy AC guy at the new office. So I put on Cuir Cannage and marched out the door. Spent an hour in the building with no AC and the *&$%#$ didn’t even show up. So I called him when I got in the office and verbally ripped him a new one. The AC is now back on in the new office building :) but my perfume took a beating in that heat and faded quickly.

You go, girl! It’s a pity about your perfume, but there’s nothing like asserting your personality to good effect.

SOTD is Serge Lutens Fleurs D’Oranger — must be the reformulation because it feels lighter and cleaner than some of the reviews of the original formula suggest. I’m finishing off my sample, trying to pick a new floral to buy for my birthday in September. My current go-to is Carven Le Parfum.

SOTD is Memo Inle from a sample from the lovely folks at Q Brothers. It is WAY too much BWF for me on a hot and sticky day!!!

I am sampling Bond number 9 New York Oud. One tiny dab. Resisting washing it off, but desperately want to.

If you are desperate, then definitely wash it off before you start considering chopping your arm off. No need to suffer needlessly

Another hot day in New England. I am celebrated (joking) with Lyric. When I arrived home from work I found that my samples had come in. So now I smell likes floriental wearing four different scents. :). I have no self control…..

That was floozie, not floriental. Auto correct strikes again!
