Monday scent of the day 7/6

Posted by Robin on 6 July 2015 112 Comments

Diesel fashion campaign

Another Monday, although perhaps not everyone is back to work yet? If you can, do share your fragrance of the day.

I'm wearing a tiny dab of Diesel Loverdose Tattoo.

Reminder: this Friday, 7/10, is 3 star fragrance Friday: wear a fragrance you would "objectively" only give 3 (or fewer!) out of 5 stars, but that you love and wear frequently.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Oh, fun poll! I’ll start early with that — I’m wearing Juicy Couture EDP. (I’d give the parfum 4 stars.)

I almost qualify since I’d only give mine 3 stars, but can’t say I love it and wear it frequently

Yeah I’ll probably have to cheat on “frequently” too. Or just say “frequently by perfumista standards, considering.”

Wow. I thought that ad was a joke, but that is a model with vitiligo and after Googling I see she’s doing quite a bit of work… good for her! Beautiful gal.

Me, I’m in Bottega Veneta, the original scent.. I’ve got to wear this one more often as it’s a beauty.

Isn’t it great (both original BV and the model’s presence in the ad)?

While skinny white teenagers still dominate ads everywhere, it’s really nice that different forms of beauty are finally making it into the mainstream.

Yes, there are many forms of beauty, and it is really refreshing to see!

I remember you had not tried BV but I guess that’s changed?

Back in Keiko Mecheri’s Oliban again. No idea why – I just keep craving this one. The Monday Blues have hit, though, and I may need to put a dab of something cheery in a different place just to get through the day.

Very much back to work, unfortunately, with another tough week ahead. I wanted to feel elegant but strong (not No 19 strong – more devastating, if this makes any sense), so I’m wearing a red dress and Tom Ford Lys Fume.

Good Girl Gone Bad– Sophie Matisse art edition which really isn’t doing much for me at the moment so I’ll probably wash it off and try something else in my sample stash

Any Boston people interested in getting together and going sniffing anytime on a Tues or Thurs? Or perhaps a live swap which was awesome when a few of us did it in NY….

SOTD is L’Impact de Pour un Homme by Caron. It’s a gorgeous, soft lavender vanilla, and my most worn lavender. All the while wishing for some much needed rain.

This question pops up every time I mention L’Impact :) It’s essentially the extrait de parfum of Pour un Homme, so less projection, a more plush feeling. I think Luca Turin mentions that the lavender used here is of higher quality than in the regular PuH. I wouldn’t know.
I think the structure of the original (my Pour un Homme was bought around 2007) is slightly more harmonious. The transition from bright lavender to soft vanilla and amber seems slightly better done. I wear L’Impacte more often though.

SOTD is TDC’s Kashan Rose. I finally figured out that it’s the one that has been lingering in the oversized shirt I wear while putting on my makeup – the fragrance on skin is only slightly cardamom-spicy, but the linger it leaves behind is more broadly perfume-spicy … and beautifully so.

Mulled Cider reminds me a little bit of BP al02 (I think that’s the right number?), which I want a FB of, but it’s no longer available from Lucky Scent. Also reminds me that I need to try Sushi Imperiale …

Oh, don’t get me started about the 50ml bottles! So many from this line would be on my shelf if they still offered the 50ml! I do love my little decant and will probably get another when the current one is gone. It’s a lovely soft feminine fragrance, as you point out, and very wearable in the swamps :)

Decants are really hard to get in A-NZ too, Hamamelis. If I want something, I nearly always have to brace myself and buy a bottle, which means that I now own enough perfume to be pickled in. I sometimes even (mea culpa!) buy unsniffed on the strength of the reviews, just to satisfy my curiosity.

It’s the perfect day for a summer cologne like Hermes Eau de Narcisse Bleu, which is fresh and bright and charming, although truth be told I’d never own a full bottle of it because for that kind of money it has almost no lasting power and in the end it’s not very distinctive.

I’m wearing Dame Perfumery’s Desert Rose. When I first put it on I was rather underwhelmed. This is the second time to wear it, and I like it much better. I think that it has bloomed in the warm weather. In any case, I think this is going to be my favorite rose this summer, replacing Rose Anonyme, which I like better when the weather is cooler.

So sorry. Black Orchid is very powerful. Its kind of fruity-jammy mixed with a bouquet of flowers. It is very different (as is all of TF fragrances). One of the NST readers sent this to me. One or two squirts is plenty. I like it a lot, but not enough to buy a full bottle. I like Tom Ford’s Santal Blush and Jasmin Rouge so much better.

Baghari today! I really love this smell, but aldehydes scare me due to their potential to sneak up on me when I least expect it and stab me behind the eyes with an icepick..so I tend to be very wary.. but today the aldehydes were very friendly, and all was aldehydey powdery floral loveliness :)

Tough call! Have you worn them side-by-side? I don’t know if I recommend that or not, because sometimes I get confused by smelling two perfumes at one time, but I love reading other people’s side-by-sides.

I long for vintage Diorissimo – the new stuff seems rather thin and sharp to me compared to what I remember from 1971 or so…which is why I think I like the Oriza – it seems softer and plusher to me, although it is lacking the complexity and sophistication of the Dior. But you are right, I probably should generate a set of current LOTV samples and see what else is out there. I like Debut, that is another option…

I’m wearing Cuir de Nacre extrait, a very elegant suede/iris scent gifted to me by a generous fellow perfumista recently. It’s actually a mistaken application; I was going for the Ciel d’Opale, but those darn coffret bottles are small, and the script is so flowing as to be illegible, and I’m old enough that I can no longer read anything that’s not at least 12 point print…….

I’m wearing Amouage Ciel today after someone mentioned it yesterday. It’s a light floral, not Amouage’s usual style at all. I get notes of gardenia, lily, jasmine, and what I suppose is cyclamen since they say there is some. It’s pretty, but fading fast. I would not pay Amouage prices for it when I think Wit and California Reverie are just as pretty.

SOTD is Azagury eau de parfum. Something really strange happened with my bottle. The other day I saw a little puddle of liquid on my dresser, and I was horrified to discover that most of the juice had oozed out somehow. So now I have maybe 1/4 left of juice inside. My bottle had always leaked out a little on the top whenever I used it, but never like this! The funny thing is, I rarely wear it because it was the perfume I wore on my wedding day (shout out to Scent Bar in LA for guiding me to this lovely frag). I’m not even sure Azagury sells this anymore and it’s no longer available on the Scent Bar/Luckyscent website. :-(

Has this happened to anyone before?

It sort of happened to me with a bottle of Jil Sander No. 4 years ago – I didn’t lose as much as it sounds like you did, but because I wore it nearly every day back then and noticed the level dropping more rapidly than it should have. It apparently was seeping slowly out of the top fitting and oozing invisibly down the side of the bottle. Left an indelible ring on my dresser top too. :(

My TM Alien Essence Absolue is also evaporating. The downside to those refillable bottles! I only know this b/c when I open my one frag drawer, I got lovely little whiffs of it. I am wondering if I should just decant it into a 3 oz bottle and then put the empty alien bottle on display.

I’m not sure how effective these methods are, but I also use parafilm around the ‘seams’ of containers I fear have greater evaporation potential, and sometimes covering the entire spritzer mechanism under the cap, perhaps with more to hold the cap on tight.

Depending on my dedication to the cause, I then put the bottle in a sealed plastic bag, as close as possible to the size of the bottle, and then I put that whole mess into a tightly-closed screw top container, like a big (cleaned out) pickle jar with a good lid, for example. I haven’t taken a next step so far but if I were to do so, I would put that big jar o’ perfume in plastic into the refrigerator.

Wow – that’s quite a ritual. Most of the time that I’ve had evaporation I didn’t notice which decant bottle it was until it was too late. But the Alien EA has such a unique and powerful smell that I can tell now. I’ll probably just decant into a Boston Brown bottle. But I’ll note your methods for securing future bottles! I lost a very costly decant of Shem El Nessim that I could cry about – I never even really wore it and then it was gone.

Hello everyone. Up in the other hemisphere, you’re sweltering and wearing gorgeous summer perfumes (not that there really is such a thing, but you’ll get what I mean), and down here, I’m shivering. I still don’t believe my weather app, but then, I don’t need it to know that it’s raining in sheets, gusty and cold. So, what to wear for a writing day in the office? And the winner is…Box of Eels! And jeans and boots and a jersey. Yes, perfect. Decision decided, I can now get up and face the day.

I wish I could say that my good choices are helping me to work hard, Deva, but in fact, I feel scatty, lackadaisical and full of mad tra-la-las. What I really want to do is go out and play, but the grown-ups keep sending me emails. Sigh.

      YES IT’S COLD.

And wet. (I am in Wellington for the afternoon, but sadly without an opportunity to do more than check my email & NST while grabbing lunch before heading on to another meeting.)

I am in No. 5 Eau Premiere – which I spritzed at a department store on the way. It really is missing that gorgeous fresh citrus top it used to have, but it is still very good.

Oh, Mals…this is about the worst weather that A-NZ can produce, and you’re copping the lot. Ummm could you go to — no, bother it, that’s for summer. What about?–no, not that either. (Casts around in skittery mind for something encouraging to say.) Ummm– some of my team are at a conference in Queenstown, where the temperature is 2 degrees. Does that help? No, I knew it wouldn’t. Well, top citrus notes missing or not, at least you smell delicious.

Oh, and btw, you and your husband seem to have made great progress down the North Island, considering that you’ve been looking at agri-business on the way.

We have made progress! It’s been very much a meet-and-dash sort of trip, though. We got into Wellington this morning at 9:30 am, and we’re on the 8:30 ferry to Picton tomorrow morning. Eep.

Oh, eeep indeed! I wouldn’t be facing the ferry to Picton with nearly the sang froid that you’re managing. Travel well.

Belated reply to say yes, you have indeed been in Wellington at very nearly its worst. But it’s going to get colder overnight…

Weird chilly drizzly day here in San Diego. Our “June Gloom” seems to be lasting into July, but we always need the rain. Wearing Aftelier Honey Blossom, the only Aftelier that I have tried – won this one from Alyssa’s blog I think! It is lovely and I may re-apply since it is mostly gone by now.

Waking up in southern climes to forecasts of horrible weather coming. Reading about all your summer choices has been cheering, but quite distracted me from suitable choices here. Finally gone with Sacrėbleu Intense, which always seems warm to me.

Hi there, fellow Kiwi. I know that I’m a thin-blooded JAFFA but even in though Auckland is warm compared with Wellington, I am also appreciating Sacrebleu Intense this winter. Warm and happy and always present/

Sorry — of course, that should be ‘thin-blooded JAFA’. In my present frivolous mood, jaffas sound quite appealing & I think I’ll go and buy some.

I grew up in Dunedin, but 30 years in Wellington means I’ve long acclimatised.

Coincidentally in a lovely 3 star frag–First EDT. Cheerful.

    Not working though.

My eldest went off with my step-father this AM for a week of hiking, biking, and sailing, and I just got back from taking my youngest to the airport for a week in LA with his grandfather…And I have no writing gigs lined up. . . so naturally I buried my woes by eating about a trillion calories of left-over BBQ from this past weekend. Mmph.

    First and BBQ.

Hahaha, treat yo’self! That should be an unofficial NST motto.

I finally watched the series finale of Parks & Rec last night. I’d been saving it for a loooong time, waiting for the right moment to enjoy it. Kind of like ones does with some fragrances. Had to be in the right mood.

It was hard to say goodbye, but it was a satisfying resolution to the series.

I decided to do a side by side test of two lavenders, PdN Homme and BK Taste of Heaven. They are both minty lavenders and completely unisex. PdN has some citrus and a suggestion of ash or stone. BK is a touch sweeter and more herbal; there are slight hints of amber and powder, just a nod in the direction of Caron Troisieme Homme.
