Wednesday scent of the day 7/1

Posted by Robin on 1 July 2015 214 Comments

Aftelier compact

The summer is flying by, as it usually does; welcome to July! What fragrance are you wearing today?

I'm wearing Aftelier Cuir de Gardenia, from Gaia's Top 10 of Summer list at The Non-Blonde.

Reminder: this Friday, 7/3, we're doing scented body products. Skip the perfume if you dare, and wear one or more scented body products.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: image is Round Nineteenth century French Limoges Compact with Pre-Raphaelite Portrait, $370 (filled with solid perfume of your choice) at Aftelier.

I’m wearing Eau Exotique. It’s a PdN, so duh, I like it.

In honour of Canada Day, I’m wearing the only thing I have that has any Canadian connection: Encore by Alfred Sung. His first scent was a massive hit but this one flopped terribly, probably because it’s a potent floral oriental that was launched in 1990, a couple of years behind the peak for that style of scent. It’s so great, though: big tuberose in the Poison manner plus a cola accord.

Didn’t know he was Canadian. I bought my friend Shi by Alfred Sung years ago, and now that’s all she wears. Nice light floral, but I haven’t smelled the rest of his line. I bet you smell lovely.

He was born in China but moved to Canada at the age of 24 after graduating from the Parsons School of Design (thank you, Wikipedia). There just aren’t that many famous Canadian designers: the only others I can think of are Brian Bailey and the DSquared brothers.

Cola, eh? What else has a cola accord? I can’t remember hearing much about that before.

That was supposed to be Outremer.

I’ll bet that Demeter has frags that feature cola by itself or with other notes.

They don’t have a cola scent and that is an unaccountable omission. They have a Ginger Ale that — ask anybody! — is a minor miracle, something that actually smells exactly like ginger ale, carbonation and all. You’d think Cola would be a piece of cake, and Root Beer, Cream Soda, and Orange Pop, too.

Sprayed Bvlgari’s Green Tea all over my clothes, but the air conditioning inside calls for something else.

My generous rose buddy (you know who you are) gave me a small sample of Mille et Une Rose, and I’m enjoying that loveliness now.

    Have a lovely day, everyone.

:) No spill – the spraying all over the clothes was intentional! That’s just how I roll. And I still can barely be smelled.

And the Mille et Une Rose is only on my wrists, where the Green Tea is not, so thankfully, they are separate, and I’m enjoying both.

Hermès. The cheapest per ml. for an Hermessence is 2€. For a TDC ( when available in the refill bottle) 1€/ml.

SOTD is my beloved Zelda in all her waxy languorous beauty. She really works well in the heat and humidity, making me feel very indolent. But off to work I must go…*sigh*

In preparation for Friday, I’m wearing Caudalie Divine Oil. I like the scent and it has no white flowers (well, I don’t smell any) — yay! Like most moisturizers (scented or unscented) it’s irritating my hands, so I will look for the perfume version. I think that the oil would layer well with a violet soliflore, so I’ll add that later.

La Haie Fleurie is so gorgeous! I had a sample of the “du hameau” from quite a few years ago, and then got a small decant of the LFH without the “de hameau”. I don’t wear it as much as I should. Still – one of the best natural earthy jasmines ever. The only thing I’ve ever smelled that almost got there, but was more polished, is the Jasmine Rouge by Tom Ford.

I cannot believe it, but it’s HOT in Brussels and I’m wearing Yves Rocher Eau des Vahines and it’s very nice. I bought it yesterday, together with the Monoi body oil and shimmering body oil and hydrating mist and shower gel from the same series, because there was a 50% discount and it was warm and I got carried away. Very happy with it all, however.

Eau des Vahines and the monoi body products are summer favorites of mine. The Eau is a wonderful inexpensive alternative for the costlier and often elusive Guerlain Terracotta.

Exactly. For me, Eau des Vahines works as a replacement for Bronze Goddess as well (I never liked Terracotta that much) – I actually bought it because my bottle of BG is in Estonia and I didn’t want to buy another.

24 Faubourg for me today. I am so excited! I bought several minis from an online discounter yesterday, and among them is a mini of Bottega Veneta. For less than $8.00! I just shot last quarter’s damage report all to heck though. Maybe, since I won’t receive the minis I bought until next week, I can claim them on the July-September quarter.

July! This year is moving rediculously quickly. I’m wearing Chanel Pour Monsieur today in lieu of No. 5 which I was in the mood for but didn’t pack.
We had to get up early for a trip to town for cat teeth cleaning and kitten shots as well as human eye exams so everyone was really cheerful this morning. The chorus from the back seat was hilarious. The big guy was howling because he was hungry and the kittens were squeaking because the big cat was howling and they wanted to get out and play.

Today called for something quiet and a little dirty (a genre I need more of), so I went with Dzing! which I haven’t worn in almost a year. Over the weekend, I catalogued my samples, so I was reminded of lots of scents I’d forgotten about.

At the moment, I’m getting less of the zoo and more of the carnival smells, so it’s not quite what I envisioned for the day, but it’s actually kind of fun to get a surprise sometimes.

But I dont remember… I cant smell anything on me now.. (sniff wrist and down top) That’s strange.. I’m sure I did!….. ”

I rarely find anything at those place’s either, not exactly in the most cosmopolitan area either! I saw and almost bought the Balenciaga Perfumed body creme and I am kicking myself now for not since it was $80 bucks cheaper then they what they are selling it at Nordstrom’s for! It was in the men’s section too oddly as if some other perfumista stashed it away to come back for.

I’m trying to finish up samples (or put them in the “to-swap-away” pile), so in that spirit, STOD is Navegar.

I finally tried the Arlesienne hand cream and it reminded me more of Chanel Misia than Beige. It has a great, rich texture!

Have the day off today, and will be putting on Incense Rose after doing a bit of yoga. Looking forward to NOT smelling like sweat and dog poo! Now that I’m working about 30 hours a week, on my feet and walking constantly, I have a hard time getting myself to exercise on my days off. I almost feel like those days are needed for recovery, but I’ve started to worry that my muscles are getting too tight, and I need to stretch to avoid injury. This will be challenging, because I’m the least flexible person I know!

I hear you about the stretching. I hate it, but know I need to do it to keep my muscles from tightening up.

When I was a waitress, I used to do what I called my “wall yoga” routine before bed. Stick my legs up the wall at a 90 degree angle, feel the stretch. Slowly lower one knee towards my chest, then back again. Repeat with other leg. Bring feet down towards groin in a wall lotus, etc. . . . I think it really helped with the tightness I’d get in my lower back from stomping around the restaurant for hours at a time.

Thank you for this idea, Majorie Rose. I think one of the worst things about my advancing age is the feeling of my joints and muscles tightening, but I don’t enjoy gyms and I quite inappropriately got the giggles in a stretch class I did and fell over. Chaos ensued! I think I could happily lie on my floor and stretch as you’ve suggested, though. I know I’d have a fascinated audience of cats, and I can just imagine the quizzical expression on my husband’s face, but too bad. The purrs will cope and after 43 years of marriage to a dingbat like me, nothing disconcerts or dismays Himself.

Haha! Yes, I do admit, the kitties find this to be an especially fascinating activity! I always had “assistance” with my stretches.

I hope it helps, if you give it a try. I did feel that I got better/more flexible over time, and it was very relaxing as a before-sleep routine. Good luck!

Cartier La Panthere today. Struggling today because we had a massive thunderstorm last night and I had a hard time getting to sleep again. However, it’s the fiance’s birthday so I need to buck up because he wants to go out for dinner. I also got him a mini cake and some blu rays he’d been wanting.

Btw, fitbit people – if any of you have the flex and want a nice looking wristband instead of the plastic ones they come with then you should check out http://www.bezelsandbytes.com/. I got the black leather wrap band with gold studs and LOVE IT. It’s a little chunky, but honestly it make me look like a bad*** :p. It’s not as expensive as the Tory Burch ones also available on the fitbit site (although those are really pretty).

    SOTD = DSH Oeillets Rouges

I’m continuing my American perfumers theme week leading up to the Fourth of July. I had to transfer the contents from the original bottle to one of my own atomizers because the spray mechanism on the original one went wonky and just would not spray! Anyway, Oeillets Rouges is a spicy carnation solifiord, and is actually cooling on a warm summer day!

        Yes, that is concerning.

The only spritzer I own from DSH is on one of her water-based scents, so that comes in a large metal bottle with large plastic spritzer that dispenses generously (appropriate to the product) and without fail. It’s not the best-looking bottle I have, but it does the trick. It’s a shame if she doesn’t have good spritzers on her other bottle styles.

I get terrible sinus headaches, and usually can’t wear perfume then, so I feel for you! By accident, I actually found one scent that I can stand with a headache – Mythique, a scent I had previously dismissed as being too insubstantial. Turns out, insubstantial is just right for my headaches. I actually found it comforting. How weird is it that I’m considering a bottle just for those days when I have a bad headache?

New scent for me today, just picked it up yesterday at
    &Other Stories… called Moroccan Tea
I actually went with the body mist of this scent and it is my new summer easy-breezy, and very pretty scent! For a body mist it lasts long too, which I didn’t expect.

I would love to find a proper Moroccan Mint Tea perfume! Hmmm, maybe wearing room spray will be my tweak on Friday’s project.

It’s spearmint and it is just he right amount of it, not overpowering but it’s definitely there. They list a bunch of other notes but the mint and tea are all I really get. It’s pretty simple but just right for warm days.

My Oklahoma rose is about to go – I have like 8 buds on it – and I think they are all going to ball up in this damp. I am very perturbed. It is the most powerful smelling rose ever and so beautiful.

You need an accomplice, or a few, who preferably find it hilarious that you have too many perfumes and who are sure you can’t tell them apart. Then you spread out your perfumes (I like to do it in sort of a category-type circle, from totally unnatural to smoke to woods to herbal to citrus to rose to other floral to sweet, give or take), and look away while your accomplice spritzes something. One time we cut out ‘blotters’ from watercolor paper, I think. Then you sniff and identify. If you get it wrong everybody laughs, and if you get it right, everyone everybody laughs. I just realized that this would make a great drinking game!

I went with ELDO Vraie Blonde today. It’s been rainy and ick the last couple days, so I’m wearing something sparkly.

Morning, all. I stood in front of my collection and dithered; I trawled through your comments for ideas, and I vacillated; I went away and came back again and STILL I just dunno. Not a clue. Everything looks appealing and nothing stands out. So, maybe for this Thursday, I’ll just smell of body lotion and rosehip oil, because for sure, if I put something on, I’ll just wish half an hour later that I’d chosen something else.

Today I think I’ll bathe vicariously in all your gorgeous perfumed-ness. I do love reading your choices. I make heaps of notes for things to try when I visit the other hemisphere.

Thank you for asking — I’m OK. I think. It’s hard: I’m vacillating here too, swinging between dealing with emotions from the loss of the man and certain strictly practical decisions about daily STUFF that used to be in his job.

Heat wave here this week. SOTD is Teo Cabanel Meloe, very summery to me.

Stopped by Nordstrom’s yesterday and sniffed Tom Ford Fleur de Portofino. Brought home a sprayed card which is perfuming my home office. I might need this one. Hmm.

Cool, some rain here, and a new sample of Palissandre d’Or seemed fitting. I think normally I’d wear this in the fall. Reminds me of incense, but there’s something vegetal in there early on. I hope everyone enjoys the long weekend!

Late to the party on commenting today. My SOTD is Knot by BV. Perfect scent for summer.
Off topic, I wanted to let everyone know the power of fragrance. I had a doctor’s appointment yesterday. One of the nurses and I have just recently bonded…….because of the love of perfume. Every time I go in, we both ask each other if we have tried anything new. She’s a “Bond” girl and I am a “Jo Malone” freak. Well, when I walked into the doctor’s office, a patient was screaming at the nurse and everyone else in there as well. After the screaming patient was taken to a room to see her doctor and things calmed down, I reached in my purse and handed my new friend a small make-up bag. I was sitting in the waiting room patiently when my new friend came up to me with tears in her eyes and a huge smile on her face. She gave me a HUGE hug and told me that I had totally turned her day around. She said that her day was soo bad that she had already made up her mind that it would be her last there. She said that she had taken the make-up bag with her to the bathroom (thinking that there was tissue or something for her face). When she opened it, she realized it was full of samples of a lot of the fragrances we had discussed. I tried to put several samples of the scents she wanted to try (including Jo Malone, of course) for her enjoyment. The best thing about being a perfumista is sharing with other perfumistas so they too can enjoy the wonderful world of fragrance. After I finished with my appointment and was on my way out, my new friend said, “See you next week!” I told her that I would be there. The power of fragrance: touching souls, one scent at a time! :)

Hey, that’s a fabulous story. Scent can be very grounding — I often use my perfumes that way — but it wasn’t just the gift of the samples that made her day, you know: it was your absolute thoughtfulness and kindness. It’s nice to be able to use perfume as the medium to carry warm human connections the way that you did.

And thank you for all that you do for people. I know that personally I am not always the easiest patient to deal with (I am completely horrified of needles) Nurses put up with so much stuff and always remain calm , cool, and collect! :)

I am an RN as well and love to hear stories like this! It renews my faith in people in general, and the medical profession in particular :)

She will never forget you, and your kindness will keep traveling through her to others. I have been a nurse for over 25 years and some of the wonderful folks I have met along the way taught me what it really means to be brave, courageous, and kind.

Hope all is well with you health wise and I send good vibes and thoughts your way :)

That was a fabulous thing to do, scentfromabove. Being a doctor, I am usually not on the receiving end and people usually calm down by the time they see me. But that’s because they have already torn some nurse or front office receptionist to shreds. Believe me, it’s patients like yourself that make medical professions the reward that they usually are. Hope you are making good progress in your health.

Iris Poudre for a gray afternoon in Auckland. Actually managed to sleep some on the plane, for once… but still tired. Wandered around downtown some (I am definitely not dressed for wandering into the Prada, Dior, and Gucci boutiques) but didn’t buy anything. Looks like the only sniffery I’ll have time for is at the Duty Free.

Oh well. I don’t even get that at home; best I can do is Macy’s.

Oh – and I keep smelling those modern patchouli-musk florals on people downtown today. You know, Narcisco Rodriguez and La Vie Est Belle and Coco Mlle… better than Eau de City, but everyone smells the same.
