Wednesday scent of the day 5/20

Posted by Robin on 20 May 2015 172 Comments

Fendi Spring 2015

Happy Wednesday! Do tell us your fragrance of the day if you have a spare moment.

I'm wearing Fendi Theorema, my old favorite from perfumer Christine Nagel.

Reminder: this Friday, 22 May, wear something from Jo Malone or perfumer Christine Nagel.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is model Binx Walton for Fendi Spring 2015.

Gosh. I know what you mean. I think about perfume and decide about perfume and evaluate perfume so much, and yet it always stuns me when someone compliments the fragrance I am wearing (it happens about twice a year, maybe). The other day at the dentist a woman told me she loved what I was wearing. I had to think a moment. It was Tea for Two.

SOTD is vintage Chanel no.19. Had a meeting this morning, and the person sat next to me commented ‘smells like old lady in here’ :-(

Re Friday, think I found a solution for Christine Nagel Friday. I don’t own any JMs, and Narciso Rodriguez for Her is too ‘perfumey’ for work….and not in mood for Theorema (I only own a mini which is already half-empty)…so…
Miss Dior Cherie, the original one. I know, I know…but hey, imagine the fun! I only own a mini of this for reference, but wouldn’t mind using it on this one occasion.

    what do you think?

I have a migraine (nothing too serious) so I had to wear something one-note, low-pitched, and close to the skin, because I hate going commando: I’m in I Coloniali Mirra e Mirra, which is just a warm bath of sugary myrrh, and very very nice.

SOTD is Ann Gerard Rose Cut, which is the one I have fallen hard for from the sample pack. I need to retest Cuir de Nacre, enjoy wearing Perle de Mousse and wasn’t wowed by Ciel d’Opale.

True…I bought the same box and must say I’m experiencing them pretty much the same way. I love the chypre structure of Perle de Mousse too and Ciel didn’t register.

Similarly, I have my doubts about Cuir de Nacre. I had used up a 1ml sample, wearing it on NYE, but now…I don’t know, might it be not for me?

Not yet. I plan to use up the 7.5ml and then I’ll see. Have a lot of rose fragrances in my collection and the problem is that every time I ask myself if I need another one, the answer is yes.

Its looking like I’m finishing up Sa Majaste la Rose, and I won’t replace it. So when that happens, I might buy Rose Cut instead.

I planned to wear Blackberry & Bay (I like it a lot), but forgot to put it on in the morning. So I’m in Tabac Blond now, I had a sample of it in my bag. It would be interesting to know what other people carry around with them. My selection today is totally random, I did a quick inventory and found: samples of L’Ombre dans l’Eau (EdP), Byredo Pulp and Mister Marvelous, the original Aedes de Venustas and Chanel No 19 Poudre plus En Passant travel spray. And I keep full bottles of Cristalle and Narciso at work for emergencies.

      Annikky,
So good to know that I am not the only one who does that. I keep a variety of samples in a little makeup bag I carry in my purse. Honestly, it’s a whole bunch of Jo Malone samples. I always bring a sample of what I am wearing that day in case I want to freshen it up a bit. I keep a small bottle of Orange Sanguine in my desk at work. It is office-friendly and helps lift my spirits when I need that boost.

I think you are much more organized about this, but I always have something in my bag. And my reasoning for keeping Cristalle at work is exactly the same as yours for Orange Sanguine. Narciso just looks pretty :)

I have Travalos of Narciso Rodriguez for Her for applying if I’m out, Apree l’Ondee at work, and then randomly, a mini of La Fille de Berlin, A la Nuit in Travalo and Santal Majescule in roll-on travalo. What do you know, Lutens on the go!

I recently put back in my dresser, after it got dirty in my handbag, a roll-on of L’ombre dans L’eau perfume oil in its soft velveteen cover.

Weird confession (somewhat related): I keep an FB of Elizabeth Arden’s Green Tea in the glove compartment of my car. I never wear the scent on my skin, but I love spritzing a little in the car.

Does anyone else have a “car scent,” or is that just too blasphemous for most perfumistas?

I don’t have a car scent, but I do have a scent strip spritzed with Eau des Baux that’s done a pretty good job fragrancing my car. Fragrances I’ve tested on paper often end up in my car. Definitely a step up from those little scented trees!

not blasphemous at all…although I don’t have a “car scent” per say I do keep certain fragrances that I don’t adore in various places (including my office) to “freshen up” the atmosphere when necessary (ie: an exceptionally “stinky” lunch eaten at my desk). I think this is a great way to use up a bottle that I no longer enjoy wearing on my skin. I have done this with Bond no 9 Little Italy which is a citrus scent and it livens up the room.

Pssst. Shhhh … but yes I do. I used Eau des Missions and Vanilla Flash this past winter through early spring, and I also plop cloth bags of cardamom and star anise under the seats when the mood strikes. Or cheapo Indian dhoop incense. I also spritz essential oils like spruce, birch, eucalyptus and mint for a quick perk-me-up in the morning.

I don’t have a car, but I spray perfume into the shower sometimes – TDC Bergamote and L’Occitane Jasmine Green Tea are especially good for that. And I had an event in a Russian reastaurant recently, so I brought my Cuir de Russie with me and scented the whole room.

Hee hee, I do love to spritz fragrance on myself in the car on the way to work. Then when I get in the car later it’s like an instant fragrance booster. I keep a travel spray of Songes in my purse, so that’s often my car’s scent.

Fiele Fragrance Viola, the quintessential perfume for an introvert due to its high dosage of violet leaf e.o. which, reportedly, helps with shyness and fear…also has foin coupe absolute which lends to its sweet, green and grassy aspect. At first spray it is very reminiscent of Grey Flannel (loved that one). I am enjoying it and feel that it is perhaps the most masculine of the bunch.

Scent twins again! I am really enjoying sampling this one as well. Lots of hay. Anyone who like hay, this is a must-try. The initial impression is of background grapefruit and fuzzy green violet leaves, then I get green hay that fades to sweet dried hay. There is a softness to this scent that makes me think of suede, but there is no leather in there at all… just an impression. If I had to give this fragrance a color, I say “faun.” Really no sillage…so I’m likely to add it to my wish list… But for those who enjoy skin scents, this is lovely.

Oh gosh, on me this has ample sillage…the violet leaf is loud and clear and not a skin scent at all ( would say the Myrrha and Postemon which I wore yesterday to an important meeting are more skin scents on me). This is what I love about essential oil perfumes…the variance of scent and how they morph over time on different skin types). For any who are familiar with Grey Flannel there is a definitive similarity to my nose due to the violet leaf (and Grey Flannel really projected on me…the vintage that is as I haven’t tried the current formulation).
Oakland, have you given time/thought to any of the other samples? I know you tried Postemon and didn’t get much of the patchouli. On me the first spray was heavy on patch and cocoa but then segued into sweet, balsamic vanilla. The Cedrus was sweet, citrus and very dry woods (I liked it but I could also say it reminded me a bit of the orange children’s aspirins and yet it still intrigued me).

Well, I have been known to be anosmic to some musks, so I wonder if the sillage you get from Viola is amplified with a musk?

Haven’t yet given Juniperus or Cedrus theire day in court… but from cheat pre-sniffs, I won’t be surprised if Cedrus winds up being my favorite of the bunch–and it was the one I was least intrigued by when I ordered the set. In any event, there isn’t a dud here. Even if I don’t wind up lusting for any of them, they have all been excellent and a lot fun to try!

same for me…I was least interested in Cedrus and the most intrigued by it once it hit my skin…you are right, though, if not loves for all they are at least well thought out and well constructed for all natural essential oil perfumes.

Actually the credit goes to Robin for a post on Fiele Fragrances and for Oakland for mentioning that she was going to purchase the sampler pack in support of a new indie brand….I followed her lead (given the low cost of the sampler- twenty dollars- I could not resist). I have been so smitten by the fragrances that I have been a bit outspoken. But do bare in mind that I happen to like the scent of essential oils so if you are looking for a really “polished” and linear fragrance you might not enjoy these as much as I do…they are different on everyone’s skin from what I have been reading and they really do morph over time.

Could you keep mentioning them for the next year so that I can put off purchasing the sample set for another year? Cuz it will take me that long to get through what I already have in The Sample Sea. Today my husband wore his homemade combo of Creed Green Irish Tweed and Juniper Ridge Siskiyou Backpackers Cologne, so decided I needed to wear something pretty to contrast the uber manliness. SOTD is Maison Francis Kurkdjian A La Rose. It is a very pretty rose but I tend to get anosmatic to it quickly. Everyone else can smell it but me! As a side note, this was a free sample from NM. If possible, get on their mailing list! I get cosmetic mailers every couple of months or so and they often come with inserts for free samples. Some of them can be redeemed via email and they overnight the sample to you!

It is another uncommonly cold day here, cloudy and high forties. I was wavering between Byredo 1996 and Chergui, and chose the latter because the bottle has been a little neglected.

My Chinese housemate tends to classify all of my perfumes as “medicinal” smelling (in a bad way). She prefers her perfumes fresh, often synthetic-smelling (to my nose), and floral and/or fruity with a little citrus and sugar. Maybe it is a cultural thing? (I don’t mean this to be offensive to anyone, it is just something I have noticed with multiple Asian people).

I have an idea of what you mean. I think the Asian cultures put a premium on “youthful buoyancy.” When I was in China for several months, clothing and shoes were often decorated with flowers and little bows. Oddly I never smelled perfume. Wide eyed innocence is popular. (Again, a generalization.)

If you have ever read the Black Narcissus I believe that he frequently makes mention of the fact that the younger Japanese women prefer “fresh” fragrances. And I remember reading somewhere that rose is also an extremely popular note in Japan.

I’m wearing White Sandalwood by Nest. Fragrantica considers this a male fragrance, but I think that anyone who like sandalwood could wear it with no problem. I think it would layer well, perhaps with ginger or citrus. There is a slight mustiness to it that I generally associate with fig fragrances, which I don’t like. So far of the three Nest fragrances that I have tried from my coffret this is my least favorite.

Now that the weather has cooled back to normal May temperatures, I’ve been wearing Miller Harris Fleurs de Sel. It’s a strange perfume inspired by coastal salt marshes and the village of Batz-sur-Mer. The listed notes are red thyme oil, rosemary, clary sage, iris nobilis, narcissus, rose, ambrette seed, woods, vetiver, moss, leather. It’s also a bit smoky. Some reviews reference Terre d’Hermes, but Fleurs de Sel is much more natural and less harsh.

The only other perfume it calls to my mind is Eau d’Italie Sienne l’Hiver, but Fleurs de Sel is softer and has a hint of underlying floral notes. Wikipedia describes the history of Batz-sur-Mer as beginning with the founding of a priory dedicated to St. Winwaloe in 945 by Alan II, Duke of Brittany, where “Benedictine monks developed the local economy, and apart from religion they devoted themselves to agriculture and to the maintenance of salt ponds.” I imagine they burned driftwood and kept a garden with herbs and flowering plants.

To me Miller Harris Fleurs de Sel is a beach scent, but one for a winter’s day, i.e wearing a sweater and not a bikini. I find VCA’s Midnight in Paris is somewhat similar, but oddly it’s in my tray of summer perfumes.

This is by Christine Nagel so while it’s not Jo Malone, it is still on theme for perfumer. It is high-carb gourmands’ gourmand, a more grown up version of Prada Candy with booze and chocolate. Did I say I love it? Why yes I do love it, pink juice and all!

Abano, Prince Matchabelli. What a modern-smelling scent of sweet cocoa-inflected powdery patchouli, and a touch of not-so-modern natural-smelling skank. There’s hay or tobacco or something sun-dried and vegetal in there as well. Wish I had more than a sample!

Yes, you’re quite right about the oakmoss. For me it contributes to the patchouli and vegetal effects. You know how there’s some overlap — I call it inky territory — among oakmoss, patchouli, and very dark chocolate smells?

I have some kind of oakmoss extract, not sure if it’s an absolute, EO or what. That’s how I got to inky! I tried to put some in my bath, but it refused to separate. The little blob slowly sank to the bottom and stuck there. It gave plenty of scent from there. It’s the kind of smell that just contains a whole world within itself.

I’ve got a little proposal, if you want to drop me a line, chocolatemarzipan. You can reach me at alederberg@gmail.com

    • leathermountain says:
      20 May 2015 at 1:33 pm

Sometimes I layer a perfume with itself, not just refreshing, but smelling it differently that way. No idea why it works, but Abano’s top notes now yield a clear lavender note that I thought was completely absent the first time around. Other herbs may be in evidence as well.

I don’t know why Dune is sometimes described as bleak (ie Luca Turin), it just smells good to me. leathermountain, I think it’s a huge psychedelic radiant shocking pink pure rose. The quality is incredible, and if you’re a fan of eos, absolues and the like, this is exactly like a blend of the best quality rose oils you can find, and then amped way up. If there are any bells or whistles, I lack the sophistication to discern them, and in this case they’re not missing, imho.

So far my favorite rose scent is Eau de Joy, where I feel that any other notes are just providing context for the rose. It’s the opposite of huge, psychedelic, and shocking, but I’m rather curious to smell that rose, too!

SOTD is L’Ambre des Merveilles, which on me is mostly vanilla.I think I prefer the original Eau but I’m trying to use up little spritzer testers to free up room in the perfume cabinet.

Getting started early and wearing JM Blackberry & Bay. It works in about any weather.

I have been unscented for the last several days due to overactive allergies but this morning I awoke with only one eye swollen shut and the rash on my face almost gone so I went with Malabah since I knew it would disappear within an hour or so. I really kind of wish it would stick around longer, it is a great hot weather tea scent.

Thanks. I’m pretty sure it’s mold since I got a huge face full of spores the other day when I opened a bag of damp potting soil. As a Texan I have vowed to never complain about rain but the toxic fungi I can do without.

That’s dreadful, I’m so sorry. I hope you will fully recover very quickly.
