Monday scent of the day 5/11

Posted by Robin on 11 May 2015 161 Comments

Salvador Dali flower

Welcome to another week! And it's Salvador Dali's birthday. What fragrance are you wearing to celebrate?

At the moment, I am commando. My lily of the valley are in bloom, and I have a small glass full of them on my desk. That's enough fragrance for the moment!

Reminder: this Friday, 15 May, will be Fake Flanker Friday — wear a perfume that doesn't have a flanker but should, and tell us what the flanker should be called and what it should smell like.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Having been away for a week it feels nice to be able to join in again with my SOTD. It’s Vanille Intense, which is not PdN’s finest perhaps but fun to wear all the same.

I love the scent of real LOTV, so I can appreciate not wanting to blend that scent with perfume.

      Welcome back!

It is amazing how well the original Diorissimo captures it, though! Every year when they bloom I am reminded.

Well I didn’t want to bring up your favourite again. But you are absolutely right. I own a small amount of vintage Diorissimo that I occasionally steal a sniff of.

Since it’s Dalí’s birthday, I’m wearing a vintage-ish (10-year-old?) splash of his namesake fragrance, which is so fantastically good. I hate to think of his last years (a lot of terrible things happened to him) but I’m pretending he had a hand in the scent, since he was still alive when it was launched: I bet he made them put ocelot pee in it or something.

The sales bumf at the time was that he had actually contributed to the making of the perfume, which I now know to be almost certainly untrue: he most likely just lent his name to it to make some money, which is nothing to be ashamed of, particularly since he never made any secret of his love of celebrity and money — he used “Avida Dollars” as a pseudo-pseudonym (it’s an anagram of his name, “avida” meaning “greedy”).

Guerlain Iris Ganache, and for the millionth time, I want to know why it was discontinued and if they’ll ever bring it back. One of the great discontinuation tragedies in my opinion.

It’s warm (70s) but grey and overcast, and I was a little sad about it being Monday so I went with the slightly melancholic Iris Poudre. And I’m wearing purple ;)

That picture of Dali is awesome!

Inspired by the huge bunch of lilac my dad gave me from his yard, I put on Aerin Lilac Path. I’ll probably switch it up later though as this scent usually starts to irritate me after a while. It’s kind of like cheesecake for me – too much of a good thing.

I’ve read the leaves and flowers are poisonous to dogs, cats, and horses. Even the smallest amount ingested can significantly damage a cat’s kidneys. Which is why this is, unfortunately, a flower I can never cut and enjoy inside, only through open windows. To a cat, there is no such place as ‘out of reach!’

This little eaglet was sitting on a branch near his nest when the branch broke and he fell 15′ below to another branch, stayed there for a day or two as he couldn’t get back to his nest, then decided it was ‘now or never’ and took off for his first flight! Watchers have said he’s slowly working his way back to his nest (I guess they come and go for awhile even once they’ve fledged) and still learning how to land. Meanwhile his sibling sits alone on a branch near the nest testing his wings and preparing for his first flight. I find it totally fascinating!

      Hi Laila,

Sharing your love of the wee babies out and about. The back of our house is a small wooded area backed by a tree-covered hill, so we get lots of fledgling birds and baby animals… we have two very small skunks (both we’ve named Cornelius since we cannot tell them apart) and about a dozen of the tiniest squirrels running about. The baby birds are hanging out under the bird feeder while their mamas watch them fiercely. Have to keep the cats belled and locked up when their is too much family time happening out there :-)

Oh, sounds delightful! I love it when the baby birds flutter their wings and open their beaks wide, you can just hear them say, Feed me! Feed me! When I had cats that like to go outside, they were triple-belled and collared and could only go out briefly around midday when all was relatively quiet, so I know what you mean. If they came too near, mom or dad would swoop down and that would take care of them!

So fun to see those wings outspread! I’m glad to hear it is fledgling season. I was wondering because on Friday we had a sparrow fledgling land in our driveway, then launch himself into a parked car’s window. Ouch!

The little thing was stunned and bloodied, so my son put him in a shoe box to rest. He wouldn’t or couldn’t fly away. It was a cold day, so we gave him a nest made from a dishtowel with a heating pad set on low head under the box. By evening it was clear the little birdie wasn’t going anywhere, so we kept him safe overnight with some water and food recommended by our local bird expert.

The next day we took him back to his crash site. He flew into a car again, but then he was able to launch himself into a tree where he hung on and started to squawk like a lost kid. After a few minutes of chirping he attracted the attention of two adult sparrows who swooped over to check him out. They started to feed him, then coaxed him into flying across the street onto a lawn. Pretty soon three young sparrows joined the group, so our rescue effort seemed a success. Hopefully the fledgling was back with his family.

Spring is fraught with so much drama!

I’m wearing SL Tubereuse Criminelle today – luckily those crazy top notes were gone by the time I got to work, and now I am enjoying the beautiful dry-down.

By the way, when my lily-of-the-valley were blooming (they are just about done now after the recent hot weather) I put a small bouquet on the windowsill in the kitchen and they perfumed the entire house for a day or too. I would sure love to smell vintage Diorissimo, if it really captures the scent of these flowers.

I don’t get much LOTV in Infusion – you just said it waked you up, and I was just saying I have that response in general to LOTV, as opposed to Iris. Iris just makes me feel cheerful, but not alert, the way LOTV does…

Nope – my misreading, so no worries at all.

Always good to have an invigorating scent or two. I should probably acquire another….but any excuse to acquire another is a good one, isn’t it?

I think the reason IdI makes me more alert is that it has vetiver in it. Whenever I need to feel put together and capable I wear vetiver scents. They tend to make me more productive. I’v also realized I’m extra resistant to going to sleep when I’m still smelling vetiver. Has to be replaced with lavender…

I’m not sure I’v had that effect with LOTV, but I will keep a watch for it!

I think it was you that was talking about the invigorating effects of vetiver the other day, and I made a mental note to try this. I’m always so tired, so I’m hoping it works.

            Thanks Merlin!

            11 May 2015 at 3:25 pm

It sounds like IdI is helping to do the job! Guerlain’s vetiver is more pronounced and astringent, so probably props me up a bit more :)

I’m very dozy in the day, so I need all the help I can get… Glad something is helping you!

Robin, you just gave me an idea to grab some of the lily of the valley I found growing at the side of my garage this weekend to bring indoors. They smell wonderful. In fact, my whole yard smells wonderful. Is it kinda sad I’ve been so generally busy that I had no idea what plants were all growing around my yard? I took some time this weekend to look at them and found hyacinths irises, and tulips along the side of the house. Then there’s more irises and I think we’ve got some lavender ready to bloom in the back flower beds. Some other white flowers I couldn’t identify – actually two different kinds but one might be snow drops. Lots of ferns, magnolia trees (too young to bloom yet), several azalea bushes in front and back, a white flowering dogwood tree up front. And then I found the surprise batch of lily of the valley hiding behind another azalea bush on the side of the garage away from the house. Also, there’s a ridiculous amount of lilac trees in the neighborhood. I went for a run last week and I was constantly getting wafts of lilac as I ran.

Speaking of… all those lilacs prompted me to put on After My Own Heart by Ineke today, which is a lilac perfume.

Yes! The hyacinths and tulips are already gone from the side of the house unfortunately. They were blooming the week we moved in though and I got a good dosing of their fragrance then. I’m so excited for all the irises now! And even though it’s ridiculously humid/hot today I may still go for another run in the neighborhood to smell those lilacs before they go.

In SSS’s Jour Ensoleillé from a teensy sample… It is pretty, but I get a strong whiff of that white wood base she uses, which can give several of her fragrances a strong similarity after the initial top notes… Yesterday, being Mother’s Day, I decide to wear the last drops of some vintage Chanel No. 5 extrait (from a decant from STC–sadly not a bottle I owned). My beautiful husband surprised me at brunch with the kids with a bottle of Carnal Flower. I had to put it on and let everyone sniff it… but needless to say Carnal Flower just plonked her curvy flank on top of the No. 5… and that was the end of that… Extinguished without a trace! I love CF, and if there is anyone out there who has not tried it, I have some left over in a decant I’d be happy to pass along!

Like Robin I am also commando right now because I have a small vase of lilacs on my desk and they have scented my entire home office. Lilacs are at peak today, so a blend of deep purple, light purple and a few white are making me smile. LOTV in our area (Minnesota) are still a little ways off.

I wish I had a true lilac perfume, any suggestions? The ones I’ve smelled always smell so artificial. In real life they are so fragrant, why can’t a decent oil of lilac be found? A spring mystery?

I love DSH White Lilac. En Passant is lovely but SO fleeting on me that I barely get even an hour out of it. I Profumo di Firenze Lilla is very nice (but hard to find and expensive, unfortunately).

Patou Vacances – at least the 80s rerelease – is equal parts green leaves and mostly-lilac tender spring flowers, and it is Just About Perfect according to me. :) Can’t wait for my decant of the new version to show up.

I have not done well with Pacifica French Lilac or Ineke After My Own Heart. However, I like a lot of green freshness with my lilac scents, and those don’t really have it. Then there’s Soivohle Lilacs and Heliotrope, which I find really heady. I almost can’t breathe if I’m wearing that one (and don’t even know if it’s still in production at Soivohle or not).

Um… I think it may have been an earlier incarnation? My sample was from 2009, via a friend who bought a bottle – it’s possible she didn’t include the last part of the name. Or maybe they just *changed* the name, I don’t know.

I’ve tried most lilac fragrances and my favorite by far is the d/c Yves Rocher Pur Desir de Lilas (Annick Menardo), just pure lilac with a touch of almond, but then I prefer soliliflores of the flowers I love most. Alfred Sung d/c Sha is a lovely, soft white flower bouquet with a predominant lilac note that my favorite of the non-soliliflores..

Gosh, it’s been a while since I had a chance to comment on my SOTD. Since today is my birthday as well, I thought I could share what fragrance I selected. My SOTD is Wild Fig & Cassis by Jo Malone. It’s kind of a dark, woodsy kind of scent. It is appropriate for the type of day I am having. Had to go in shut-down mode at my job today (I am a school counselor) because of a tornado warning coming our way, I had 3 students who flipped out this morning that I had to deal with, and to top things off, the other counselor didn’t come in today. So, I am responsible for the well-being of 1200 students on my campus! Birthdays aren’t supposed to be this way. :(

Today had a rough start, after being up in the night with one of my kids. I wanted comfort, so went with l’Ambre des Merveilles, layered over the shower gel. I thought it might be too rich for the clear sunny skies, but it feels right. Maybe when I’ve finally woken up I’ll switch to something else.

Finally, finally it’s warm in Brussels. I arrived from Tallinn this morning and hoped to smell Jour d’Hermes Gardenia at the airport, but they didn’t have it yet, so I sprayed myself generously with Monsieur Li. I really like that one.

Lily of the valley is a childhood scent for me, my grandmother used to grow the flowers (and my mother still does). As a child, I used to draw them all the time, I thought they looked perfect. I love the scent in nature, in perfume not so much – although I’ve had some lovely moments woth Diorissimo.

It is nice, yes. Not quite Paris or Prague, but it’s interesting and diverse and manageable. For me it’s been home for many years: I grew up in the Eastern part of the country, near the Russian border, but went to work in Tallinn straight from the university. Now I go there once a month or so, but I’ll hopefully return in five years.

I went with Un Jardin en Mediterrannee today. I’ve never smelled actual LOTV plants, or lilacs for that matter. Neither of those grow around here, as far as I know. I finally got to smell a magnolia up close recently. The scent doesn’t seem to carry very far, so when I see them in trees around neighborhoods, I can never actually smell them. But I was at a nursery and saw dwarf trees that were in bloom, and at perfect sniffing height. So I got a good sniff.. and then circled back around a couple of times to sniff some more. :)

Am wearing NEST “Wasabi and Pear’ Body and Soul spray. It’s very light, with a fruity, ozonic sort of smell that is perfect for after working out in the mornings. Does not last- it’s just enough to perk you up, and that’s it.

The day started out with a dense grey sky and oppressively high humidity here in the DC area, temps hovering around 80 and no breeze whatsoever. I couldn’t figure out what fragrance might alleviate the density in the air, and the thought of perfume made me feel vaguely nauseous. Then the sun broke out, we had a rain shower in full sun, and I spritzed on Monsieur Li. I find it interesting, very much like a sophisticated version of Demeter’s Dandelion. However, I may not be accurate at all, as this is the third perfume I’ve tested in the last three days, and my first reaction to each was an itchy nose and the allergic salute performed for a couple of hours after application. I have no idea if I am experiencing some sort of allergic response that is manifesting due to what is obviously a high pollen count here, or if there’s some common ingredient that’s triggering this response. Gosh, I hope it goes away.

Reviewers are calling it a chypre, but to me, it’s not that easily categorized. Although tuberose is one of the ingredients, I would not categorize it as a floral, either. flathorn on basenotes describes it as an evocative perfume, like Djedi and vintage L’Heure Bleu, and I’d say it is like those two in being complex but subtle, with the notes blended into a whole.
