Thursday scent of the day 4/30

Posted by Robin on 30 April 2015 206 Comments

trumpet

Happy International Jazz Day! What fragrance are you wearing to celebrate?

I'm wearing Clinique Aromatics in White. In jazz terms, I guess it's "smooth jazz", of the late 80s / early 90s California school.

Reminder: on 1 May, we're doing Tea Time Friday โ€” wear a fragrance with a tea note.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I still have about 2/3 of a 1.7oz bottle left, it will likely last me forever as long as it doesn’t turn.

You know it’s interesting how our nose changes. I was madly in love with this scent but lately I’ve had a hard time wearing it..
I plan to pick it up again down the road, but currently have no desire to wear it all day. Another reason why I shy away from purchasing full bottles.

Well, someone doesn’t like it b/c the used bottle I have was from the swapmeet! It is not at all what I expected b/c normally I do not like strong leathers. I was taking a chance on liking it b/c I figured if I didn’t like it, I’d also swap it along. But surprise! It’s really interesting. I recommend testing first. It is really unusual.

I also recommend testing first. I wasn’t crazy about CdL – probably because I have a hard time with leather notes. I do like a few fragrances with leather (Amouage Beloved, SL Traversee du Bosphore) so I thought CdL might be soft enough for me, but the leather note was too strong.

Sampling Onice Omnia Profumo. I guess it can relate to jazz because there is a lot going on and I have no idea why any of it is happening ๐Ÿ˜‰ Licorice and celery and mint and pineapple and nutmeg? I am on quite the trip, this morning!

All I can think of is this exchange from The Simpsons when Lisa visits a jazz club:
Lisa: You have to listen to the notes she’s NOT playing.
Random guy: I can do that at home!

There aren’t a lot of notes this perfume isn’t playing, but I will keep sniffing and see how it progresses – still early ๐Ÿ™‚

CB is probably one of my favorites from the sampler although that’s not saying too much. It’s very light though so it doesn’t last too long on me. I definitely get a light tea note and the citrus. I wouldn’t say it’s a great scent, but more in line with the general non-descript, “fresh” style that’s so prevalent these days.

I had an extremely busy morning and forgot to put on any perfume. Fortunately, I have a bottle of Cristalle at work, so I doused myself in that. I love this scent, but I’m still somewhat surprised every time I spray it and realize how good it is.

It’s been one of those days when a little help from my perfume is much appreciated (it’s late afternoon here already).

I agree, it is one of the best there is and very uplifting. I have never tried the pre-reformulation Eau du Sud: is it very different from the current version?

I am not sure Anniky, because I did not smell the current one. I only remembered that Ann went at great lengths to find the pre-formulation one, so that is what I did as well. I found it quite easily though, on Ebay, from a reputable German seller (duft impulse). It is really very nice, a bit more citrusy than Cristalle, but I like that very much.

Wearing my decant of Pichola today. Very beautiful stuff. Reminds me to some degree of SSS Jour Ensoleille, perhaps less mossy and honeyed, but that same sort of golden rounded floral. Unfortunately, its strong early presence is shrinking down close to skin, two hours in, and I’m a little disappointed in that.

No, Vacances hasn’t gotten here yet!

And unfortunately, right after I wrote this, the Duchaufour-ness of it (which I tend to associate with old vasewater, or limp celery) showed up. Was loving it until then, now just tolerating. It’s now reminding me a bit of Nuit de Tubereuse, which I also don’t love.

I wonder if it’s the vetiver, or a particular quality of vetiver that BD likes to use, or something. Very earthy, almost sour as well. I don’t remember this happening in the three original Neelas, or in Amaranthine, or in Seville a l’Aube, but I really dislike this earthy thing and it’s common to at least a number of Duchaufours.

yep, Duchaufour doesn’t typically work on me either, def not Nuit de Tubereuse, and I’ve not been tempted to try any of the Neelas, just based on the notes. Seville a l’Aube is one I’ll try, but not going out of my way to do so.

Kevin’s review of Aromatics in White gave me a laugh. Today is Ungaro Diva, a successful blind buy. Usually careful about sampling first, but wanted to try the vintage version of this, and it was extremely reasonable on ebay. Gives a whole new meaning to cheap & cheerful, as the components smell like a million bucks–yay!

I’m still hoping it’s allergies, so I’m going to keep trying (and I’m doing a little better today than I did yesterday!), but if I can’t smell it, I guess it’s silly to buy it. But I do get to free-form dance with my 7 yo daughter at home from time to time, and my husband swears he’ll learn to do it when the time comes up. With sampling, it’s usually the other way around for me: I wear familiar things to work and evenings are the play-time.

I’m a fan of L’Amandiere, particularly in its opening. Unfortunately for me (but fortunately for my wallet), it becomes rather powdery in the dry-down on me, even veering into deodorant territory.

But, oh, it’s pretty for a while.

Oddly though I sprayed some on my coat ( huge mistake), and the drydown after about a week was rather pleasant. Not worth the investment though plus I don’t like the bottle.

Today I am wearing Bulgari Eau Parfumee au The Blanc which I like better than either The Vert or The Rouge. I probably wouldn’t have bought it but it was basically free–I got a 2.5 oz tester for less than thirty bucks and I do reach for it once in a while. What I really enjoy is the body products–the lotion and shampoo/conditioner seemed to have a more pronounced scent.

In an effort to use it up, I slathered on Pacifica’s Persian Rose body butter… I like the packaging. The rose is waaaay too fruity for me, and something in there makes me almost want to sneeze, and I don’t think it is a good moisturizer. Then I had to do something about the scent….and decided if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em. After an extremely liberal application of SSS’s Velvet Rose, I am now no longer fit for civil society.

Fortunately, the cats seem to forgive me.

    Aaaaaachoooooo!

I don’t know about the body butter, but my cat seems to like the Persian Rose candle. And there’s no such thing as too much rose (at least according to kitty). I have a few SSS roses, and I routinely drench myself in them.

My world is growing greener every day, yet the cool weather has kept the magnolias and forsythias in bloom for weeks. Plums are flowering, viburnum blossoms are opening, daffys and tulips abound. This gloriousness! is being interrupted today by a cold, blustery north wind. It can only be a day for Pierre Balmain Vent Vert . . . . and Vent Vert is John Coltrane, tenor sax, Lush Life.

I have a bottle from about 15 or 20 years ago, and it’s still about half full. I went through a phase when I wanted to live in France and wearing Dynamisante and using all things Clarins was about as close as it was going to get. Funny though b/c Dynamisante lasts forever on my skin! Sud too. Unusual for a Goutal. I haven’t worn my D for a very, very long time, but the other day my hubbie said he wanted to wear something so I sprayed it on him, and then I was like, HEY! That smells like Sud.

I was up before the sun and put on Rosa Magnifica. I think it’s one of the original Aquas Allegoria from Guerlain. I love love love roses, and I started getting interested in perfume specifically because I wanted to smell exactly like roses. But X number of bottles and X-hundred number of samples later, I don’t have an easy-to-wear rose scent! I guess I caught the perfumista bug of wanting to be interested rather than merely pleased…? Anyhow, I have a sample of this RM, and I may have an opportunity to swap for more of it, and I’m trying to figure out if it’s just right or possibly too watery/synthetic. When I don’t think about it too much, it seems perfectly lovely. When I sniff-and-scratch-my-head, I have those doubts. I’d love to hear others’ thoughts on the scent. ๐Ÿ™‚

Have you tried out Desert Rose by Dame Perfumery. It seems simple and straightforward and pretty to begin with, and then it becomes deeper and more and more enjoyable over a few samplings… the opposite of most rose experiences I have had, which is more what you are describing – interesting to begin with, but getting wimpier with time….

And then some tea. If I respritz after lunch, I might finish up the decant. I have a lot of citrus stuff, so probably won’t go on the buy list, but it is a very good one.

I’m keeping on me week of roses with Parfums di Nicolai Rose Pivoine. I always forget how simple and fresh this one is. Very pretty.

Rose Pivoine is pretty. I love that PdN has those little 30mL bottles. I succumbed to its charms after a sample, and haven’t regretted it. It’s fun hearing about your rose week. Waft on!

Yeah, I have the 30 mls too, and it’s about half empty so I’m wondering if I should get another. Now I need to spend some fun time doing research on my roses to find out which have tea accords! I don’t know if I’m going to want to wear Zeste de Rose tomorrow b/c it’s going to rain…

Vanille 44 today, after reading about the Tauer Vanilla, set me to craving. I suspect this is more sweet, but haven’t tried the Tauerville scent yet. V44 is probably my favorite vanilla. Be well.

    happy jazz day everyone!
I’m wearing acqua di parma colonia, which in jazz terms translates into Django Reinhard and midnight in paris ๐Ÿ™‚

I am wearing Oellet Bengale, and the only remote connection to jazz is that the last time I went to Aedes de Venustus, I proceed to a jazz concert in the park to see Jimmy Scott.

This morning, I was oblivious that today was jazz day. However, while driving to work,I did think of my favorite jazz vocalist (well actually my favorite all time singer in any genre, who has influenced all singers everywhere) the great Billie Holiday.

What do you think of Oeillet Bengale?

I didn’t know today was International Jazz Day. I am wearing Bulgari Omnia today, which I’m not sure what that would translate to in jazz terms.

Why to the Dave Brubeck Quintet, instantly like able and accessible just like Omnia, but once you venture further you realize that Alberto Morillas is a brilliant nose to create saffron where there is none and Dave Brubeck his complex time stamps hidden in that sunny, easy going West Coast Jazz.

Yesterday I kissed my husband hello when he got home and was stunned by the beauty of his cologne. At first I thought the scent was PdN New York, but it turned out that he had sprayed on some vintage Grey Flannel from a decant I gave him ages ago. What a gorgeous one that is! Smelling it without the prejudice of knowing what it was, I realized it is better than anything else he has.

The only perfume I have on today is a bit of lingering Lyric Woman on the sleeve of my sweatshirt. It is beautiful but the only part of it that isn’t totally too big for me is the dry down. I sold my bottle on eBay last week.
Later I think I will put on some original Armani from the 80s in honor of the Hot Jazz club.

Vintage Grey Flannel is equally stunning on a woman (you should try some on yourself).

Is there a noticeable difference between vintage Grey Flannel and the current formulation? If you don’t know about the vintage, is the current formulation nice enough?

I haven’t experienced the current formulation but from what I read it is not the same as vintage….I had and wore vintage quite some time ago! Stunning!

I find Lyric hard to wear too, and my large decant has been gradually swapped away the past few years.

I wish I’d known it was jazz day, as I might have chosen something with a little more “ooomph!” Instead I went with Diptyque Eau Rose. It’s not my favorite rose, but it’s not without its merits.

Nothing for another couple of hours but then I’m going to Bergdorf’s to go sniffing with a few perfume friends for probably the last time before I move back to Boston in a couple of weeks. I’ll be back at least once a month though. Still, I hadn’t been to Twisted Lily for a couple of months and there were whole new lines that I had to at least sniff on paper and get some samples and sniff the new releases and I guess I’ll end up a little behind once I’m no longer in the area (so sad)

SOTE– JAR Bolt of Lightning, JAR Diamond Water, Guerlain Shanghai, Guerlain French Kiss. I am particularly surprised at how nice the latter is on me since the notes didn’t really seem my style.

I keep sniffing the Gourmand Coquin on my left arm… I’m a combo of that, Stella, Feves Delicieuses (is that the name?), Irish Leather…

      It’s a good combo.

Note to self: self, do not try questionable perfume samples given to you by well meaning perfume sales associates. That is all.
