Wednesday scent of the day 4/8

Posted by Robin on 8 April 2015 187 Comments

blue moon

It's hump day. If you have a spare moment, do tell us your scent of the day.

I'm wearing Hiram Green Moon Bloom. Tea at the moment: Kusmi Traktir.

Reminder: this Friday, 10 April, is BWF Friday: wear a big white floral. Partial credit for diet white florals, a wee bitsy dash of credit for other sorts of flowers. The decision of the judges will be final and binding on all participants.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Dior Homme EDT today. It’s the black stem version and I bought it sometime in 2011, when it changed from a Polge creation to a Demachy one. I remember going to one of the nearby department stores at the time to check if the testers out were the new version. So I approached the Dior counter rep and politely asked her. Let’s just say it didn’t go too well and after a bit of verbal jostling she just cut me off: “It hasn’t changed – I would know about it if it had”. Hmmm, red rag to a bull that. I was fuming, so when I got back to work I loaded up the Dior website contact us page and asked them point blank if it had changed and if the testers were out in stores. I wasn’t really expecting a reply, but it made me feel a bit better! About a month later I got into work to find an email from Dior in my inbox. I’ve still got it so here’s what it said:

    Dear Bob,
We received your recent e-mail and wish to thank you for your interest in our products.
We have duly received your email concerning the olfactory evolution of your Dior Homme Eau de Toilette.
In 2010, an indispensable alteration to the quality of the Cedar Essence previously used was naturally imposed to François Demachy, Perfumer-Creator of the House; the Virginia Cedar essence. Its unique characteristics bring to the fragrance a woody base note distinctively nobler and raw, exacerbating an affirmed masculinity contrasting, and offering an idyllic balance, with the refined notes of the Iris of Tuscany. This new quality of Cedar Essence heats slightly the color of the perfume, now more opaque of an amber color. We hope you understand the approach of our perfumer whose primary concern is always to ensure the highest quality of natural raw materials.
Consequently, the testers of Dior Homme should be the new version.
We look forward to your next visit on our website.

So there you go. Don’t let anyone tell you there’s been no reformulation of Dior Homme!
And how does my reformulated bottle smell? Well, pretty much the same as the old one. It’s a bit heavier on the cacao and doesn’t seem quite so ‘lipsticky’ but apart from that it’s survived relatively unscathed.
Oh, and I left a copy of the email with the rep at the Dior counter, you know, just for reference…

Good job! I am quite impressed Dior responded to your inquiry. The lipsticky aspect of Dior Homme is one of my favorite things about it.

I loved the phrase “exacerbating an affirmed masculinity” in their response. I suspect it is a translation from French and could have been better done, but it’s almost Freudian as-is. :)

Gold is SO good. There was a time when it was absolutely DIRT CHEAP (probably right after it was d/c), and I picked up a 1-oz edp bottle on ebay for… $8.

      Shipped, even.

The next bottle I bought, for my daughter, was $16. I think it’s gone way up since then.

I’m wearing Chanel Beige. I’m kind of into this subtle, feminine honey-floral thing lately. L’Occitane Arlisienne is the downmarket version and I’m considering buying the body milk.

Yes! I had lavender tea at a friend’s house and couldn’t rest until I owned my own tin (I’m not a huge tea collector, either). Mine came from Notting Hall, 866.361.TEAS out of Boston, MA. They also have a website.

stinker_kit, I’ve got some Mariage Freres Earl Grey French Blue that a friend brought back from Paris last summer – all yours if you want it. I have tried to like Earl Grey, I really have. It appeals to my sci-fi, ST-TNG loving nature, my Anglophilia, and my pleasure in unusually scented products. Alas, I just don’t love it, and with all of the other tea options in my cupboard, the French Blue just sits there. The MF Eros, though, was gone in about three days.

          • Robin says:
            8 April 2015 at 12:42 pm

Fortnum & Mason Countess Grey (love that one), 5 different Earl Greys from Premium Steap in Philly (one of which has lavender, another is a green), Kusmi Polish Earl Grey, Twinings Lady Grey (not a favorite), Upton Extra Bergamot, plus a bunch of samples from Harneys, Upton and Tea Trekker. When I sample an Earl Grey and don’t like it, it goes in an old Mariage Freres tin with all the other rejects and I mix in a pinch of Lapsang.

          • austenfan says:
            8 April 2015 at 4:40 pm

I’ve looked at the Fortnum’s EG it looks very nice. Flavoured green teas that I don’t like I mix in a tin, and add some mint. Not the greates of beverages but this way it all gets used up.

          • Robin says:
            8 April 2015 at 7:37 pm

Exactly. Shame there isn’t a way to do that with perfume ;-)

I have been purchasing loose dried lavender at my health food store and adding it to so many of my teas…lavender sencha, lavender oolong, lavender jasmine green, lavender earl grey…..and I have to say NST is becoming a bad influence on me with the tea recommendations too-LOL! I can go overboard with my tea hoarding… nearly as bad as my perfume obsession :) !!

That’s a smart way to do it. I have a tin of plain lavender from Harney’s but probably paid more that way!

          • bardot says:
            8 April 2015 at 11:14 am

I also had the Harney tin which gave me the idea when I saw dried lavender in my healthfood store…and yes, the Harney was way more $$$$! Have you tried the Harney Earl of Haarlem (since we are speaking of Earl Greys)….that EoH and Paris are my two favorites from that company….it is a lapsung with bergamot…..smokey bergamot and absolutely divine!

          • Robin says:
            8 April 2015 at 11:28 am

I love Earl of Harlem but since they don’t sell it loose and I hate those plastic tea bag thingies, I switched to Fortnum & Mason Smokey Earl Grey, and then since I have no regular access to F&M, made my own mix with Upton Extra Bergamot Earl Grey + Upton Lapsang Souchong Imperial. Actually nicer to make your own since you can make it as smoky or not smoky as you like. Plus, again, cheaper!

          • Robin says:
            8 April 2015 at 11:29 am

(should say: cheaper in some relative sense, since obviously once you start down this road, you’re spending a lot of $ on tea, LOL…)

          • bardot says:
            8 April 2015 at 11:58 am

I prefer loose as well…lately I have been spending quite a bit of time/money in my local tea/coffee shop which has quite a large selection of loose teas (no teabags in there!) many of which are organic (that is my OTHER obsession as of late!..going the organic route). I also purchased four travel loose tea brewers on amazon…..steel mugs that have a built in mesh brewer for loose tea that keeps the water hot for hours…I have four of those in my house as we are a house of tea drinkers …..those mugs are a godsend!

Ooh, I like the idea of combining lapsang souchong with Earl Grey!

The other day, I was talking with one of my roommates about bacon, and she made a remark about how I’d just done that. I said nope, and offered her my mug of (lapsang) tea to sniff. She was astounded.

          • bardot says:

Bexca, I am laughing as I read what you wrote! the young lady who works in my local tea/coffee shop is a vegetarian and she cringes when i come in to buy the lapsang…..she told me she can’t stand the smell of it because she smells bacon!

      • Bexca says:
        8 April 2015 at 2:09 pm

I’ve called lapsang “barbecue tea” before the bacon craze.

Thanks.. it could’ve been worse.. It didn’t go flat until well after I had gotten home from work yesterday, and had I not needed to make a late-night grocery store run for cat food, I wouldn’t have discovered it until I went out to go to work this morning. At least I got the spare on last night so I didn’t have to worry about that.

I was at the tire place this morning too! Had to have all four tires replaced on the small farm pickup.

But, you know, I really like the smell of the tire store (with or without the Elie Saab)… Bulgari Black makes me think of it.

Ugh all four at once? That had to hurt. Replacing one was more blow to the bank account than I would like.

Being at the tire store this morning made me think of Bulgari Black too. I almost wished I hadn’t swapped my bottle away, though it really was one of those scents that I appreciate but rarely actually wore.

Yeah, all four. We had lent the truck to a friend last March (yeah, LAST March) “until he could get a vehicle of his own.” He still doesn’t have one, but we finally told him we needed it back. One brake job, one (four months late!) inspection, four new tires, one alignment, a tank of gas, and $840 later, the truck is home at last.

I only had a mini of Black, which I enjoyed but don’t feel the need to replace.

I have always wanted to try one of his, but never am sure what I would like. Maybe one of you could recommend one. I like BWFs, floral and fruity perfumes. (Chanel 5 Premier, Love Chloe, Kai and Viva La Juicy to name a few.) Thanks.

Serges for Wimps? (Um, that would probably include me. :) )

Try Nuit de Cellophane for a light fruity floral. Sa Majeste la Rose is soft and pretty. You’ve got more choice with BWFs – Datura Noir, the current version of Fleurs d’Oranger, Fleurs de Citronnier, and Un Lys are all on the “easy” side.

From there it’s not a big stretch to leap to Honkin’ BWFs A La Nuit (jasmine), Tubereuse Criminelle, and Sarrasins (jasmine and leather).

I am so looking forward to that Vanilla Flash! The only BWF I have is Terracotta. I’m not sure that really qualifies for Friday’s Theme since is seems more of a gourmand on me, but I’ll give it a whirl.

Happy Wednesday Everyone! I went to Nordstrom’s yesterday after work to check out the new “Blossom” fragrances from Jo Malone. Supposedly, Neiman’s can’t keep them on the shelves and you have to request an order. Well, they didn’t make me “swoon” at all. So, I ended up purchasing a fragrance that makes me smile every time I get a whiff of it……..Wild Fig and Cassis. This is also my SOTD.

Put on three spritzes of CSP Vanille Abricot this a.m. and by eleven I could hardly smell it because I have a cold, so (at work) I put on one discreet shot of Hermes Vetiver Tonka, because that vetiver will cut through anything. Those two layer pretty well anyway, so I don’t think I’m stinking up the joint or anything.

Vetiver Tonka is probably my favorite of the Hermessences. Okay, maybe it ties with Osmanthe Yunnan. Poivre Samarcande is close behind. In any case, you smell great, and I don’t think a single shot of VT is overpowering, given the general transparency of the line.

SOTD is the original Marc Jacobs fragrance, in the parfum. Reminds me a bit of AG Matin d’Orage – there’s a watery slant to it in the opening followed by tuberose/jasmine. Nice stuff, but I’m glad I only have a mini as I don’t love it.

Right. Well, it’s not A Watery Scent at all, and there is that gardenia/jasmine/tuberose focus (well, really I’m not getting proper gardenia, but I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt). But for a few minutes in the opening I’m thinking to myself, Wow, that’s watery. Pleasant, though.

I don’t know how old my mini is. Bought it off ebay about four years ago, I think.

It was fun reading all the comments on Marc Jacobs at fragrantica….several spoke about the aquatic/watery element and others got pure gardenia…funny thing is one commenter had bought a mini off of e-bay…tried it, didn’t like it as she felt the top notes were off, dumped the whole thing down the sink and hours later, was ready to kick herself b/c she was in love with the drydown :) ! You can’t make this stuff up!

Infusion d’Iris today. Every time I wear this one, I wonder why I don’t wear it more. I think my baby bottle of 30 ml discourages me from choosing it more often, which is silly, as it’s hardly difficult to come by a replacement.

Hi meredifay! I have the perfume oil and I actually wear it on my hair / scalp. It is hard to gauge dosage but it lasts all day (definitely at least 8 hours). It is animalic, not usually my type of perfume, but the gardenia makes the entire composition beautiful. The sample from the Aftelier website is very reasonably priced; in fact, if you were so inclined, you could buy 8 of the samples, consolidate them into one vessel and end up with the volume equivalent to the mini for less than the cost of the mini :-) I have the mini since I am too lazy to do the consolidation myself.

Oh my goodness! I had the complete opposite from CdG! It reeked of rotting flowers on my skin and lasted forever! REally disappointed b/c it has gotten quite a few good reviews and I wanted to love it like everyone else…however, I have the solid so I am wondering if the beeswax and/or other ingredients utilized to make the solid may be altering the scent? I had less luck with longevity on the liquid samples that I purchased, luckily as none really smelled good with my skin chemistry …. those that had the isolates (such as the pear and coffee) had an uber:sweet offputting chemical smell. Someone mentioned on NST that she had the same reaction and she realized that it was the ambergris that her skin was reacting to in a not so good way….I have had better luck with the naturals from SSS…they are gorgeous on my skin :)

I let very few perfumes touch skin. I use the spray and walk into the mist method. Cuir de Gardenia is too oily and too expensive for me to apply the usual way. I ended up using it as an oil on my hair. I will say that the rotting smell was initially off-putting but the emergence of the gardenia early on blends so well and takes over.

One enormous and very gregarious ginger tom with a heart of gold and an insatiable penchant for tummy rubs and the other a small dark gray-and-white tom, who appears to be a shy and sensitive but loving soul, until you catch the sometimes crazed look in his eyes that reveals the little devil that resides within!

After being petfree for an entire year (the first time in my adult life), Serendipity called on the first anniversary of the last of my three cats’ crossing the Rainbow Bridge with a request to help out the friend of a family member who was relocating his family out of state and who was unable to bring the cats with him while they were temporarily residing with family members. It was all very sudden, I’d never met the friend nor the cats, but then they were here, it’s now been 3 months with 3 more months remaining. Of course, I have fallen in love with them and I will cry when they leave to rejoin their family, but I know there are countless others out there looking for their forever home and I will find another pair to adopt as my own.

With only an exception or two, all of my cats/dogs have been shelter/rescue (defined as, ‘Hi! I’m in your backyard, I don’t have a home, can I stay with you, please? :-) ).

I think most of us probably mean some combination of floral depth and sillage — a big white floral (like Fracas) generally floats around you like a cloud unless you apply carefully. On MakeupAlley they used to call L’Artisan La Chasse aux Papillons “diet Fracas” — similar notes, lighter scent.

Does that help? Not a dumb question at all.

This is definitely complicated by skin chemistry. The last time I tried Fracas I applied a good two sprays from the tester on a spot on my arm. Came back to the shop about an hour and a half later. The assistant was quite shocked that it had shrunk to a skin scent on me – only discernible by putting nose to skin.

Fracas was, I think, my first niche fragrance and wore nothing else for months. My bottle is almost empty, too.

Just put on some Tocca Collette. I think someone had mentioned it on one of the SOTD posts, so picked up a sample from Sephora a few days ago. I hadn’t been for a while and was excited to see Ateliers (Collection Azul only) and the MMM Replica series (Jazz Club was the only interesting one to me), and a few other new things. Collette is nice enough, but incredibly light – seems to have had more personality on the paper blotter than on skin, which is the opposite of most!

SOTD is Amoureuse, which has turned into a yummy, slightly spiced sweet creamy drydown, almost like eggnog. I’m also testing The Different Company’s Bergamote, which dissipated after about 30 minutes. I really wanted to smell like Earl Grey tea, but alas.

The thing with Divine Bergamote is that it lasts really well but you have to spray very liberally. ( I got the estagnon years ago, so I do spray very liberally). Even then it doesn’t smell like Earl Grey at all. It’s got ginger and a lovely musky drydown.

Mind you, Amoureuse will drown out most other things, I love it but it’s BIG!

I dabbed them from samples, which may explain a lack of sillage for both.

I think dabbing may work with Amoureuse as it’s nuclear, DB needs to be sprayed. Amoureuse’s drydown goes on for hours and hours and hours and is lovely!

SOTD is Hypnotic Poison. I like how cozy it is, and tend to wear it quite often, now that the weather is getting cooler.

You really like that one don’t you? I never got round to getting a bottle of it, esp. as I wanted a cheap deal on ebay and couldn’t find it there for the price I wanted.

Yeah I like it quite a lot. Such sweet teeth!

I have incredibly sweet teeth perfume-wise. I occasionally bath (cologne style bath) in CSP Vanille Cannelle.

Gucci Rush today! I like its pleasant weirdness and radiance and I especially enjoy how it projects through the day (and through my evening shower).

My sample of Le Labo Benjoin. I can’t find Lonestar Memories in the midst of packing nonsense and yesterday was a series of very stupid events, so I figured I should pick something soothing. (if prohibitive to actually purchase)

Surfing the Sample Sea, SOTD is Grossmith’s Golden Chypre from an Olfactif sampler. Stung my skin from the get-go and was a bit shrill, but the nutmeg is interesting. I’m trying to avoid shrill and interesting for the time being.

Since today was going to be spent stuck in a car I went with En Passant. I keep wishing I had just a bit more sillage but didn’t want my husband complaining at three-whatever-ungodly-o’clock this morning when we left.

I always want it to be bigger, too, but it’s such a lovely scent. And I cannot imagine anyone complaining about it.

Wearing Tom Ford Lys Fume – I seem to be the only person in the world who likes it better than Shanghai Lily.

Not very smoky, I have to admit. If there was more smoke, would absolutely adore it. But it’s a beautiful lily with a spicy opening and it lacks the persistent clove that irritates me in Shanghai Lily.

Despite it being “chilly” here in L.A. I went with L’Artisan Thé Pour Un Été. It’s not a love of mine but it called my name this morning.

Today I’m in AG Songes. Sometimes I forget how good this is, and I’m loving it right now. I’ve been in BWFs all week: yesterday SL Fleurs d’Oranger and Monday it was Montale Intense Tiare.
