Wednesday scent of the day 3/25

Posted by Robin on 25 March 2015 177 Comments

osmanthus

It's Wednesday already. A couple reminders: our swapmeet is still open, and the next damage poll is coming up soon! What fragrance are you wearing today?

I'm wearing Keiko Mecheri Osmanthus.

Reminder: this Friday, 27 March, is Figgy Friday: wear a fig perfume, if you dare. I know some of you won't dare, so partial credit for other dried fruit notes.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Amouage Beloved, oh dear, I fear I’m hopelessly smitten. And it’s so expensive!

Check out fragrancenet…I know they sell various Amouges there, including testers which are deeply discounted.

I thought you would be! The least expensive bottle I came across is 289,90 euro’s (parfumswinkel). I think they also sell 5 ml decants at request (in a travalo). I hope it will find a way into your collection.

Yeah, I’m becoming quite predictable to myself included. I’ve found an even cheaper option (€ 275,-), but it’ll have to wait. I took several years to decide I couldn’t live without Amouage Gold. Thanks for the tip by the way.

This was a Bergdorf Goodman exclusive and originally $430. I think it is discontinued, because it isn’t available on the website any longer, and BG has new, even more expensive exclusives by Roja Dove.

So my guess would be is that current prices at the discounters are as low as they’ll ever be (except for the unfavorable euro to dollar exchange rate).

Last day in Berlin (mostly just sightseeing at this point, wandering and taking in the sights like the wonderful Tiergarten) and I am finally wearing La Fille de Berlin, which might be my favourite rose ever: if I ever buy another full bottle of Lutens, it’ll almost certainly be this one.

Is that from the hockey puck version or the new cube one? I ask because I thought that I liked Nu, the original version when I tried it years ago, but I tried it again recently -from the cube- and it did nothing for me. Either my taste in fragrances has changed, my memory is playing tricks on me, or a reformulation has changed something.

Hockey puck version, which I found in a little shop in Downtown Crossing in Boston several years back. I’m willing to bet the reform is different, though I haven’t spent any real time with it.

Oh, you are lucky to have it! I smelled the updated cube-bottled Nu and Yvresse in a duty-free a few days ago and am sad to report that they are meagre, diminished versions of their former, vintage selves.

Kris, I will let you know for sure. So happy you are liking it.

I’m not really a BWF fan but the reviews have indicated that this is a nice solar floral for people who are not really floral lovers. I’m a little nervous…

Do you read it as a heavy floral?

(I really enjoy Terracotta but I LOVE bwfs.. it is on the lighter side.. a bit like Lys Soleia but more jasmine than lily)

I wouldn’t say it is heavy, but if you don’t like BWFs I am not sure you will like it. I would agree with perthgirl that it is on the lighter side and I did not smell lily. It smelled more like gardenia to me. Be anxious to hear your report.

Same here – the Gucci and Le Temps d’Une Fete are the only two fragrances (so far!) that I never, ever want to run out of and have stocked up on. (Wow, what a bunch of bad grammar that was. Reminds me of my favorite grammar joke: A little boy is in bed ready to be read a story, and when parent appears with a book the boy says, “What did you bring that book I didn’t want to be read to out of up for?”)

Omg- the grammar story is so spot on. Whenever I get worked up about something I tend talk just like that. And when I get really mad, I cry! Both very embarrassing traits as I am long long past the toddler age.

At first, I had no idea what to wear, but then I threw on L’Heure Bleu in a sort of “whatever” mode.
I can’t stop smelling my wrists now. I’ve worn this several times before (decant is getting dangerously low) and always thought: meh, it’s nice. I get it. It’s a classic and it’s good, but not FB worthy. Now…. I’m rethinking that. I went through the same thing with Mitsouko. I didn’t even like either of these Guerlains when I first tried them, but after smelling so many fragrances in a year and expanding… I’m starting to really “get” them now. Does this mean I’ve leveled up my perfumista power? *insert Mario mushroom growth sound here*

I think what also happens is that the more you smell, the more you realize how “mono” or even just crap and thin a lot of fragrances are. When you go back to those Guerlains it’s like someone put it in 3-D stereo. It’s all there baby! I think what they did so long ago was amazing, and they really hold up. Your nose and brain are like thank you thank you!! Finally something real to smell!

Even though these are the newer versions, I think you are right. There’s something about them that really stand out. It’s nice to get jolted out of the humdrum of perfume styles every once in a while. I also think my tolerance / appreciation of certain notes has helped too. I wonder if I’ll get the star level-up when I can tolerate cumin notes (Jubilation made me dry-heave and I had to wash it off after 10 minutes).

I can only stand the tiniest bit of cumin in fragrances, ditto on oud and cedar notes…. There is always hope for development and finding new accords/notes you love, but some never get there. It sure is fun trying though!

I love how candid children are. Their honest opinions are like reminders of what everyone else (adults I mean) says in their head, but have been programmed to be polite (or not!) and refrain from saying anything yet give the annoyed side-eye or passive aggressive cough or whatever they do to show some sort of dislike.

A lot of the places that have the best prices require minimum purchase or sell in lots of 50, so if you’re just starting out, I wouldn’t go that route. I recommend accessories for fragrance (seller on ebay) – their glass atomizer prices are a little high, but plastic prices are good and you can mix and match lots of different sizes if you want, instead of having to buy 50 of the same size!

I had planned to do a fig week, but I failed already! The weather isn’t right for it (still too cold in Montreal) I guess… Oh well! Some other time!

SOTD is Violet Blonde from a sample generously sent to me recently, and I really like it! I might grab a bottle before it gets too hard to get since it is discontinued.

Hmm… I don’t know that one (nor the brand, at all actually), but it sounds very interesting according to the notes on fragrantica.
I don’t have any fig full bottle (except for the fig note in Bvlgari Au The Rouge, which you swapped away to me! Still loving it), but from the samples I tried so far, probably good old Philosykos. Although I need to do some proper testing in warmer weather to really make up my mind and choose which one I’d like to get. The samples I have are of Philosykos (EDT and EDP), Jardins de Kerylos, Jardin en Med and Ninfeo Mio. But know I’m tempted to add Dambrosia as well!

Med Fig is one of those scents I can grab and spray when I haven’t a clue as to what to wear fragrance wise…and so far no one has ever complained regarding how I smell whenever I wear it(believe me I have gotten complaints from family/co-workers on some of my other fragrance choices :) !!)

I was debating between Rendez-vous, Trefle Pur, and Blossom Oud. In the end because I was having problems getting into my samples, I went with Caligna, because it was the easiest. First time to wear, and I am enjoying it.

I looked up Blossom Oud – it is available very reasonably priced on Amazon. I might have to get some – it sounds perfect for me. What is your experience of it? Is the jasmine fresh or rank? I like it both ways…

Gloomy rainy day here, so I am comparing Black Flower Mexican Vanilla with Spirituese Double Vanilla! SDV sweeter and more flowery to begin with, while BFMV is a little sharper with something else, some pepper or cumin or salt, giving it a more masculine feel. After 4 and a half hours, the SDV has receded to a faint warm skin scent. I might expect a little more from this, considering the price, but it continues to be very pretty and I love it.
BFMV is still going quite strong, more vanilla, less sharp spices, extremely rewarding to sniff the back of my hand! I like this more in later stages, but that might just be a function of comparing it early on to something so pretty. I like them both, and given the price difference, I will be buying a bottle of BFMV long before I spring for a FB of SDV. Plus, the adorable hubbie has come out firmly on the side of BFMV. SDV seemed like “too many flowers” to him. As if there were such a thing! Lol!

I have a sample of the one with Mate, Patcholi and something else. It’s ok, but patcholi is not one of my favorites. Although it is a lighter formulation that BFMV. I am sort of waiting for warmer weather to give it a real chance. I read somewhere, some very nice things about the Rose one, Prairie Rose or whatever it is called, but I have don’t have a sample of that one…

Did our Keiko Mecheri discussion prompt your choice today? :) I do like osmanthus in general, but I didn’t have a chance to smell that one. Your review of ten years ago suggests it’s not an absolute favorite, but I hope you’re enjoying it.

So that no-buy of mine? Did not last. I was trying to behave, particularly because I thought I was about to move elsewhere in the city, but circumstances changed, and suddenly I had a new bottle of Oliban by Keiko Mecheri and ordered a bottle of L’arte de Gucci this morning….whoops? But I’m having a delicious, delicious time. Plus, the road trip down the California coast that I was going to take with a friend had to be cancelled due to family complications for her, so maybe this is making up for it a bit?

All I can say is wheeeee.

    Hope you’re all well!

Thank you for replying! I have by now quite a collection, but have not fallen so hard for any fragrance as this one. I indeed have the same experience of ‘totally getting it’. HG indeed. What are your other HG’s? (or is HG per definition not plural?) Do you love another AG this much?

I was asked this question a few weeks ago and tried to make a list of my HGs. It’s kind of a moving target in a sense that some things I adored about 4 or 5+ years ago have changed as my nose has developed too. I used to lean strongly to orientals and roses, and as time passes I like more greens and chypres. The only thing that remains true is that I don’t really like sweet or sugary fragrances. If it smells like I could eat it, I’m probably not going to like it.

Actually, yes, I have a few more AGs that I love equally or more to HE. HE is also a sentimental fav for me b/c of it’s role opening my brain to galbanum fragrances that I now totally adore. AG has become my most collected house. Right now my fav AG is the original Eau de Sud, but I can’t pick my fav of hers. There are too many outstanding compositions in Goutal to pick a total favorite. I adore almost the entire line. I think I have about 16? 19? bottles of AGs?….

OK, so to get to you question. Fragrances that I hold in awe above all others:

          Annick Goutal Heure Exquise
          AG Songes edp
          AG Eau de Sud
AG Ce soir ou jamais edp
          Chanel No 5 edt
          Chanel No 19 vintage extrait
          Chanel Coco edp
          Chanel Sycomore
          Chanel Bois des Iles
          Guerlain Nahema
          Guerlain Chamade, esp. vintage
          Guerlain Mitsouko
          Ormonde Jayne Ta’if
          Gucci L’Arte di Gucci
          vintage Hermes Amazone
          ITB Cologne a la Francaise
JD Bal a Versailles ~ must be vintage
          Lancome Magie Noir vintage
          SSS Encens Lavande
          TC Alahine
          Cartier Baiser Vole edp
… But I could go on!!!

Bardot: the encens lavande came from a series of incense mods Laurie was working on about 5 or so years ago ? and that I was testing. I was the “I don’t really like incense” guinea pig. There were a bunch that she was developing, and I think eventually resulted in her launch of incense pure? I don’t remember very well so I apologize if I get this a little wrong. But I was really captivated by the lavender mod. It is the most gorgeous lavender fragrance I’ve ever smelled. I bought a small bottle of it and it goes on HG b/c there is nothing else like it.

AnnS, I’m so glad now that I bought the huge bottle. At the time I felt kind of silly for doing so. I had no idea that they would reformulate it.

Really, this is a bottle I would take if I were stranded on a desert island and could only have 5 perfumes.

Ditto that – I got the 5 oz bottle too b/c at first it was the only one they released. I kept thinking that I shouldn’t bother to buy a backup b/c it is so much. But now I regret that. I still have a lot of it, but they changed the formula, blah. What is wrong with them! It is one of my go-to frags.

This one is strange. I love the juicy orange and the spices, but at the beginning there’s a slightly queasy note… finally worked it out.. roast pork! So aside from the greasy pork moment which is a bit sickening, i do rather like this oddball discontinued Diptyque :)

    Good Afternoon Everyone!
My SOTD is Byredo Pulp. My sample finally came in a few days ago and I was excited to try it. Again, I have been looking for a fragrance that would “wow” me and I thought this could be the one. It is a nice fragrance, but it didn’t wow me. The descriptions that NST readers use to describe this scent is right on the money. It is totally a “burst” of fruits and is quite “jammy”. I never thought I would say this about any fragrance, but this one is too sweet for me. Nice fragrance, but not FB worthy in my opinion.

I decided to start early with the figs, so I’m wearing Hermes Un Jardin en Mediterrannee.

Figgy Wednesday!Haha!SOTD the new L’Occitane Iris Bleu/Iris Blanc.I of course wanted to compare it to Iris Silver Mist, but that does seem unfair!Lol.Still,it’s pretty and inoffensive, and I did enjoy the 5-second rooty, orris blast. It does have a nice blackcurrant note!

I couldn’t decide what I was in the mood for but went with Limette 37. Not sure it was the right decision. I keep thinking it smells like someone else’s perfume, if that makes sense.
I did manage to buckle down and do our taxes today so one more crappy task crossed off the list. Oh, and our air conditioner is fixed! Apparently, a wire had come loose and been sucked into the inside unit and the outside blower was forcing the cooled air the wrong way. Does anyone even know if that’s possible? Sounds a bit unlikely to me.
I think I will shower and smear on some Vol de Nuit, a scent that always feels very me.

Vol de Nuit is great, and much easier to wear than the other classic Guerlains.

Yep. I loooove Mitsouko but for comfortable wearability VdN wins every time. I haven’t fallen for any of the others, although I’m sure it’s just a matter of time ;)

I’m in Passion Fruit, Orange Blossom, and Vetiver from Dame Perfumery Scottsdale today in honor of the beautiful warm spring day! It’s a very fresh, “spring green” fragrance, especially in the first hour of wear: lots of brightly astringent (rather than super sweet) orange blossom, tart/sweet passionfruit (not honeyed or overripe or candied/jammy), and grass-green vetiver (in contrast to the earthy/dark variety). There are no dark corners here, no indoles peeking through the bright green/white/sunshine of this blend; don’t get me wrong, I loves me some skank, but it’s a nice change of pace in my fragrance wardrobe–a pop of neon in a field of dusky plums, deep roses, burgundy reds, and smoky greys ;)

I feel like there is a conspiracy to get me to the Dame Perfumery website. I can feel my bank account cringing in anticipation.

    SOTD = SL Chergui

I gassed myself with it this morning and I am still enveloped in its honeyed tobacco ambery goodness. Love!
