It's Nouveau Niche Friday! (It's also the first day of spring, and we're having a light snow. Sigh.) Our community project for today: wear a perfume from a new (2010+) niche brand.
As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you aren’t participating in the community project.
I'm wearing Ann Gérard Ciel d’Opale.
Reminder: next Friday, 27 March, is Figgy Friday: wear a fig perfume, if you dare. I know some of you won't dare, so partial credit for other dried fruit notes.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
Note: top image is Aiglon ring by Ann Gérard.
Today I’m using the last of my sample of Who Knew? by 4160 Tuesdays. It’s Safran Troublant butched up on steroids sipping green tea. I liked it the first time I wore it and I like it more this time. Another one goes on the buy list…
Oh, I might need to try that!
Sounds like a must-try
I’m joining in!
Me too
SOTD is Arquiste’s Boutonnière No.7. Gorgeous, and I’m glad to have my decant, would not spring for a bottle though.
I realised that I own way more Old Niche than New Niche. Must be my age affecting me 😉
I went back to the list of houses here and found that there were so many that just missed the 2010 cutoff by a few years. Oh well. I found a handful that I have samples from, though I own no bottles.
I only own one full new niche bottle. ( Not the Arquiste mind you)
I own WAY more old niche than new niche.
And I own way more indie niche (SSS, Ineke, 1000 Flowers) than old niche or new niche. I happen to like supporting smaller individually owned perfume companies.
Ditto. I like to support small individually owned companies of all kinds, especially local ones.
Scent twins!
I am bravely trying the Brooklyn Perfume Co.’s Musk, brave because the notes are listed as: “Dissonant (something oddly repellent but intriguing all the same), unclean bathroom, animalic, funky, sweet, mildew, sweat, feet, vanilla.” Actually, so far I do not find it as funky and animalic as MKK; it’s rather floral and pleasant. No sweaty feet to my nose!
Maybe you are anosmic to sweaty feet 😉
THAT would have come in handy for me, growing up with three younger brothers. 🙂
Only synthetic foot sweat apparently!
I soooo do not understand contemporary marketing….
I have a sample but haven’t tried it yet… maybe I don’t need to be so nervous about it, eh? I have tried their Sandalwood and Amber scents, both of which were big fat “no” on me…. bummer since James Peterson is one of my most favorite cookbook authors (I must have 6-8 of his cookbooks) so I had high hopes for his new perfume line.
I guess everyone experiences musks differently, but it’s not nearly as shocking as they implied!
Ah, I am wearing niche but not new-Lyric woman
Happy first day of spring! Also there was a solar eclipse and there will be snow here today. Lots going on…
Snow still coming down here, but lightly…won’t be a nuisance other than hey, it should not snow on the first day of spring.
In Canada it snows on my birthday regularly (mid-April) so that is normal for me. 🙂
Blech! It also ought not to snow on anybody’s birthday, LOL…
I am trying the newest of the new –Brooklyn Euphorium’s Wald. The brand itself only started this year, and Wald had just arrived at Twisted Lily at the end of February. It’s green and sap and maybe a little smoky and a little bit of dirt
That actually sounds really good!! It makes me laugh; as kids my best friend and I would make each other smell everything, “smell this! It’s gross!” Reading that description and thinking “I have to smell that!” Still makes me laugh!
Comic Jeff Foxworthy calls that the “courtesy sniff.”
I’ve got a sample of Wald myself, but I think I’m going more floral today. Maybe I’ll test Wald on the crook of one elbow.
It’s definitely not gross– it’s actually rather nice on me.
It is nice.
This sounds good, too. I think wald is German for forest, so it makes sense
yes it is.
Ooh, interesting.
Mmmm, sounds good.
Happy Friday! Today will be Neela Vermiere Mohur, which I think should count!
Fragrantica says 2012, so that was a factor for me choosing it as well today. We smell good!
We smell amazing!
Absolutely counts!
I am off by a year (I forgot to check when they started selling fragrance) and am wearing Odin Seylon which is another fantastic vetiver which I need like a hole in my head.
Close enough! Plus, extra points for vetiver even if you don’t need it.
🙂 Then I get about 5 extra points.
The went with an indie from the right timeframe – Olympic Orchids Golden Cattelya – because very little niche is sold in this city and anything I had was from a company older than 2010. L’Artisan mostly, which you can find at Sephora and occasionally Winners if you’re lucky. I should have dragged out my Silver Iris sample but I totally forgot about it. Speaking of, has anyone else tried Atelier’s new fig scent? I liked it a lot, maybe I’ll get a sample for figgy friday.
You can even find L”Artisan at fragrancenet now (also Serge and Amouge)
I just received my Olympic Orchids sample set, so will try one, or more, later today.
You smell great!
I tried the Atelier Figuier Ardent the other day and I liked it. Very light and refreshing.
I’ve been considering just bugging out on Figgy Friday since I hate fig leaf SO MUCH. But I do still have a sample of PdN Fig Tea, which I liked (there’s no fig leaf in there as far as I can tell, just fig fruit). So if I can find that one, I’ll go with it.
SOTD is Hiram Green Moon Bloom. I’m not entirely sure you’d call HG niche; he might be considered indie instead. In any case, I smell good.
Most “fig” perfumes do nothing for me but I think I have one or two samples that I haven’t tried and rejected yet
I love the smell of figs and fig trees and have fantastic memories of staying in a friend’s summer home on Ibiza built into the old fort with several figs trees on the property dropping succulent figs everywhere… but I don’t like the note in perfume at all. Not sure why.
Would love to smell Moon Bloom!Sounds like a pretty good Tuberose! Also thinking of not participating next Friday,I think the only fig-related perfume I have is Wilde. So maybe that then.Lol.
Moon Bloom is, like, GONE now. I can only smell it within 3 mm of my wrist. Granted, I’m dabbing on from a sample vial and not spraying, but I used a good splash of it. I might have one more wearing left. This is why I’d rather have Carnal Flower. Or ByRedo Flowerhead, for that matter, even though Moon Bloom is really beautiful while it lasts.
Good Morning, All!! SOTD is L’Artisan Timbuktu.
I need to bring my bottle to the front of the ole perfume cabinet. It has been too long. You smell fantastic.
Thank you!! : )
I don’t own a lot of post-2010 niche, but I do have Rose Anonyme. Wearing it alone, sprayed from a new small bottle. I like it much better sprayed alone than I did dabbed alone. Haven’t left the house yet, and might cave (cheat?) and layer with Cuir Mauresque before heading out. Or maybe not – the RA is getting nicer and nicer as it warms on skin.
I love Rose Anonyme, but I only have one of the mini bottles, which of course is a splash. Where did you get a small spray bottle? I have only seen the minis in splash.
I ordered it from Lucky Scent. It’s the 30ml size (to me, that’s “small”). 🙂
I have a splash mini as well. You could decant from your mini into a little spray bottle, say 2 or 3mL.
TGIF again! 😀
SOTD: Atelier Cologne’s Rose Anonyme layered with Vanille Insensee.
Never tried this combo and just went for it this morning! Thank god its not bad at all!
Scent twins on the RA!
Scent twins on the VI but I paired it with Orange Sanguine as Robin recommended.
I really like that combination too. VI adds warmth and a little more depth to the fresh orange.
IMO, vanilla just makes everything (well, almost!) better. 😀
Agreed…vanilla is one of my favorite notes/spices.
Robin said that Ayala Moriel said on Twitter that vanilla was the salt of perfumery. (https://nstperfume.com/2014/07/05/a-lab-on-fire-oxymusc-new-fragrance/). I totally agree.
Scent quadruplets! By a happy coincidence it was one of the seven samples I brought with me.
Last day in Florence. Went to I Profumi di Firenze and had the devil’s own time trying to find what I wanted (I’d done the research the night before and made a list): various things weren’t available in certain formats or didn’t have testers. I went with my gut or happenstance and bought Santalo Misore, Terra di Siena, and Spezie di Medici (no EDP sprays for any of them, so they’re all perfume concentrate— 60% concentration!): here’s hoping I like them all.
AND I went back to Gelateria Dei Neri and tried FOUR different flavours, include Rose, which is genuinely lovely and subtle, and Coffee, which is like a kick in the head.
Florence is THE most beautiful city we have ever, ever seen, and we travel a lot.
Thank you so much for sharing your Italian travel adventures with us, I have enjoyed my vicarious trip immensely!
Thank you for sharing your adventure! Time never seems to be enough when you are travelling! But that also means how great the trip was 🙂
I have never been to Italy and reading about your trip gives me so much joy!
Thanks for sharing your Florence travels with us. It is nice to go there in my mind. Someday…. I’ve been lucky to been in Venice and the lakes, but someday I’ll go to Florence and Siena.
Yay for the gelato exploration! And I agree, Florence is gorgeous.
Rose gelato, yum! Don’t know why you cannot hardly find floral ice cream flavors in the US, they’re everywhere else.
Christina’s Ice Cream in Cambridge, MA does a rose ice cream in the summer, plus a lavender.
Oh I know you can find them here, but they’re not common! Much easier to find in Europe. Mexico also seems to do much more interesting ice cream flavors than the US.
Adding in to the chorus of thanks for your sharing of travel adventures, Pyramus! This sounds like an amazing trip, and you’ve given me the bug to go to Italy. Florence and Rome top my list. Thanks again. Enjoy every gelato, every scenic vista and scent…and tell us all about it 😀
I love Florence a lot too. It is one of the most beautiful cities. Did you have a chance to go to Siena?
Did you go to SMN?
If you are still in Florence, there is a little lingerie shop Quercioli&Lucherini that I love a lot.
Enjoy Italy
Florence really is the most beautiful city, and I’m so glad you enjoyed Gelateria dei Neri! I confess to often going twice a day when i was there, and it was totally worth it 😉 I was there for more than a month and I still felt like I had barely scratched the surface of what the city had to offer! Have a great time in Berlin!!! (Museum island is awesome!)
The incomparable Olympic Orchids Dev 1, newish niche, maybe a touch of Papillon Anubis behind the ears. All right my fellow fumies, what are your favorite amber bombs? I love Prada Candy but this is my daughter’s perfume so I would like some alternatives. What are our thoughts on AG Ambre Fetich? I also loved the opening of Aerin Lauder Amber Musk but is does not last long and has a lamentably dull musk base.
I like Pacifica’s Spanish Amber and Eden Botanicals Amber Essence…both simple and easy to wear.
Lucky me! I own the Pacifica and yet another excuse to order from Eden Botanicals! Thank you.
You can also get Amber Pure and Simple from Eden (which is less expensive and not as complex as Amber Essence but does the trick for an amber fix) and if you dilute it in a carrier oil you can completely cover/moisturize your body in amber (I do this in the winter). They also have a pre-diluted labdanum which is cost effective and that works well for an amber fix too.
Oh and I forgot…SSS Ambre Noir (not sure if I am spelling it right) is good and I believe she has come out with a new natural…Amber Incense….haven’t smelled that one but anything Laurie does is great.
Dev 1 plus Anubis? Genius! I bet you smell amazing.
I’m not a huge fan of Ambre Fetiche but everyone else seems to love it. I just find it too…something…dry maybe. I prefer my ambers sweeter. My favorite Amber is Ambre Russe but I’m lucky not to get the vodka that some people can’t stand. I’m also a fan of Kerosene Copper Skies for a spicy amber and Teo Cabanel Alahine and Barkhane are both gorgeous. Also, Ambre Precieux, O’Hira, and I find Puredistance M to be an amber to my nose. I know there are more but my brain isn’t caffienated enough yet. Happy hunting!
I’m *not* much of an amber fan, but I absolutely adore Alahine. It’s probably the only amber (and it’s very floral, to me) I own. I’d wear PdE Cuir Ottoman occasionally, but I don’t really need a bottle of something I’d wear three times a year – that one is some leather followed by amberamberamber, in my opinion. Very nice.
Oh yes. BK Amber Oud is hardly oud at all, mostly a very very light silky amber. I like that one too. Not an amber bomb, though. 🙂
True, Alahine is not a basic amber at all but its so different and gorgeous. I think it’s one of those must sniff scents.
I love Ambre Fetiche and Ambre Russe best, for amber-centric fumes. Alahine is great too but has a lot more than amber going on.
My two favourite ambers as well …. and don’t have a bottle of either. Am living on samples. Both are absolutely gorgeous. Love Alahine too.
I love ambers. Favorites (so far) include CBIHP Ambrosius, Serge Lutens Ambre Sultan, Tom Ford Amber Absolute (discontinued), Armani Prive Ambre Soie, MPG Ambre Precieux, Annick Goutal Ambre Fetiche… hey, I did say I *love* ambers, didn’t I? LOL
Thumbs up on Ambre Sultan too!
Amber bombs:
Profumum Ambra Aurea
SHL 777 O’Hira
MPG Ambre Precieux (sweetish powdery amber)
Definitely Nobile 1942 Ambra Nobile for straight-up amber. More complex perfumes that might be considered part of the extended amber family are SSS Tabac Aurea and La Via del Profumo Mecca Balsam.
Oops… Forgot… Am wearing the my sample of Guerlain Terracotta, kindly provided by thegoddessrena. In anticipation of receiving my full bottle soon!
You smell great! I noticed in the comments yesterday that Terracotta is coming back. I might need a backup bottle!!
I gather you like it if you’re getting a full bottle 🙂
Hello all! I’ve been a bit MIA between being busy and just trying to cut down on the desire to acquire nine miiiiillion perfumes, but it’s good to see you all!
I’m off topic today – Black XS L’Exces sample is being used up this morning (not really a fan) but I will switch to Le Parfum Resort Collection Elie Saab after I shower and head out later. I grabbed a sample last night at Sephora and found it promising on paper, but I’m only seeing the 90ml bottles in stores and online so far (in Canada). Might be hard to convince me I need that much of it.
Also snagged a sample of the new Atelier Cologne fig-based scent. FIVE new AC scents to check out last night, wee! I did like the grapefruit one but maybe as something I want to smell but not wear. The mandarin faded too quickly on my skin after the initial pop.
Buying has slowed but I have to mention loving Alien Eau Extraordinaire. It’s so pretty! I’m hoping as the weather warms up and my skin is less dried out, the longevity kicks up a bit, but even that is fine where it is. Swoooon.
Hope everyone is well and has a great weekend!
I hear you on the desire to cut down on desire as well as purchase.
Sometimes it feels like I spend more time worrying about what I want next and never fully enjoy what I have!
I think I’ve been spending less time reading perfume blogs for the same reason, but subconsciously. It makes me feel better to know it’s not just me.
I want to test that Alien EE. Is the tea accord nice?
I think it’s beautifully done! I have a few other tea scents like Ange ou Demon Le Secret and Tommy and sometimes they combine with lemon(? it’s been a while!) and feel a little like cleaning products but I find Alien EE is sparkly but with that slight tinge of what I think of as ‘French-perfume bitterness’ that sets off anything overly sweet or astringent. If that makes sense 🙂 Definitely worth a try on skin! 🙂
I have no new niche at all as far as I know, even in samples, so I went with Safari. Love the floral greens during this time of year. Also, I also seem to dislike fig, but I’ll have to try to get something figgy that is not fig leaf. Maybe I’ll like the fig fruit scent better. I must say I love fresh figs to eat.
Wait, I went on Fragrantica to look for fig notes and apparently Womanity has lots of fig, fruit and leaf. I’ll try that, since I got a mini last month that I haven’t tried.
Oh yah.. after my long diatribe about fig, I forgot about Womanity… I really Womanity… it is one of the few gourmands I can wear. So much for consistency…
I just saw this at Marshall’s and debates buying it; I hate blind buying; I haven’t really had the best of luck!
Safari is SO great.
I second that.
Third.
Safari is perfect – green and floral, but still warm.
I will not blind buy……(today). When I do it just might be Safari! It’s been on my “to try” list forever!
I’m wearing Trayee today and getting nervous that my sample is running a bit low.
I really like Trayee: it smells like nothing else in my collection!
I decided to wear 4160 Tuesdays What I Did on My Holidays since it is terribly warm and damp this morning. We discovered that our air conditioner isn’t working and this house in NOT insulated at all so I’m just pretending that I’m on holiday in the tropics. I may put on some Boutonniere No 7 later since I’m sure to sweat the current scent off very quickly.
Oh no! But I love your attitude and you smell fantastic!
New niche today is Nu Be Sulphur. It reminded me of Indochine at the opening – now it smells a bit like dirty hair or a winter coat that needs a bath…(mine does)…
I’ve been working through my Nu Be sample set – love the idea of elements, but so far not FB-thrilled enough to put out.
Wearing one of my most favourite today: Atelier Colone Grand Neroli. Love!
Yay! Love that one.
I’m wearing Neela Vermeire Bombay Bling.
Robin, what do you think of Ciel d’Opale? I liked it a lot but was never quite sure if it has a convincing linden note or not…
I like it, don’t adore it. It smells linden-ish to me but maybe I’m easy to convince, LOL…still, not my favorite linden, and not even my favorite “nouveau niche” linden — I would give that to Pretty Machine.
I still need to try Pretty Machine!
Oh Pretty Machine is a MUST SNIFF for any perfumista!!
Putting this on my “get a sample” list – love linden!
I’d like to try it now just for that great name
Jul et Mad Stilettos on Lex, here!
I keep meaning to try that perfume and then forgetting about it!
This may be my favorite pin up fragrance–it makes me want to put on va-va-voom clothes! So pretty. You smell wonderful.
It’s not a nouveau niche brand (actually an older one) but I am trying out its newest perfume today: Divine Spirituelle. It’s very nice, a smooth, elegant rose, like Lancome Mille et une Roses but with more amber and musk.
Sounds right up my alley. I’ll have to get a sample!
Ooh! Another rose to try- thanks for the tip!
SOTF is Slumberhouse Pear + Olive. Don’t know when they started producing scents but they certainly feel Nouveau Niche in my mind!
I think Slumberhouse fits the bill. 2011, iirc.
Love this one! You smell amazing!
Wearing De Profundis today in honor of finding a nicely priced three quarters full on ebay.
Good score!
I know. I have got to stop trolling Evil-bay and join E-bay Anonymous.
Confession time.
I saw in the comments yesterday that Guerlain Terracotta was available again. And I bought it. Unsniffed. Breaking my “no buy until April” promise. I feel so ASHAMED (not!).
It won’t be delivered until April 1st so maybe I still qualify?
SOTD- nothing yet, getting a slow start today.
Don’t feel bad. I tried Terracotta last year and I’m sure it wouldn’t have caused me any extra harm to wait until it showed up in stores to see if I still liked it. Alas!
I would have liked to give it a sniff first, but it’s not available anywhere near me. If I hate it, I’m hoping it will be any easy swap. I’ve got my fingers crossed that it will work for me:)
Don’t feel bad Deva. I did the exact same thing yesterday. I am just hoping I like it now. I have gotten stung a few time buying unsniffed.
Blind buys are certainly tricky, but some of my favorites were acquired that way. Some (looking at you Encre Noir!) I had to send to a more welcoming home!
Perfume delivered on April 1 never counts! 😉
That’s exactly the way I rationalized it 😉
SOTD from little indie niche Dame Perfumery in Scottsdale, AZ = Black Flower Mexican Vanilla. This stuff is great – vanilla, flowers, some little wood and musk background, no tobacco (big no no for me), it is safe for work not big sillage, but it goes on and on with shifting emphasis – right now, 5 hours on, I am getting more flowers than vanilla, but it is less sweet than it was an hour ago. Comforting, happy scent – and very reasonably priced. This may be my next FB purchase…
Thanks for the recommendation…checked out the website….looks and sounds really nice (I am a sucker for vanilla).
I bought the 9ml purse size and wear it often. It’s a wonderful non-cupcakey vanilla scent that works great in the heat. I love the fact that it’s available in smaller sizes too.
Yes, this is obviously a little labor of love operation. It would be nice to see him make a go of it. The other scent from this line I have sniffed is the one with Heliotrope and Patchouli in it, and it is also very nice – I expect it will be good for warmer weather.
Wearing Orizia LeGrand Chypre Mousse. It went into production in 2013, so even though the perfume house is an old one that’s been revived, I think it counts.
Looking forward to figgy Friday. I think I can even manage Weds/Thurs/Fri!
What do you think of Chypre Mousse? It seems to be a love it or hate it scent.
Jirish, I like it a lot. I think it is best as an outdoor, cold-weather scent. In the warm/indoors, it can go a little crypt-y, and makes me feel like I’m in a mausoleum. But outdoors on a cold day it is magical–just gorgeous. I tend to apply this one pretty sparingly–1 spritz on the chest is enough to last a long while.
Agreed. It’s a rather polarizing fragrance. I do like it, but wouldn’t buy a bottle.
I’m on the don’t like it at all side. It actually makes me feel a bit queasy and I’m not exactly sure what it is in there that does it to me.
I managed to make it ten minutes before scrubbing the first time I tried it; the second time I could only get to eight. It was HORRIBLE. I suspect a skin chemistry thing.
Something in the astringent opening actually made my eyes water. I didn’t know if I’d make it past that but hr 1+ was gorgeous.
SOTD DelRae Wit. This fragrance makes my heart go pitter patter. I get excited when I see the Daphne in bloom in my neighborhood, so you can imagine how I feel about wearing this beauty! The citrus, jasmine scent in Wit is an absolute delight, and the vanilla dry down is surprising loveliness. Can you tell how much I love this fragrance??
A shout out to Foxbins for hosting a split. Without, it’s likely I would have only dreamed of Wit instead of possessing my own small precious supply.
SO GORGEOUS.
Wit is wonderful! A great fragrance to wear on the first day of Spring!
Now you are making me really want to test this! Amoureuse is getting lonely all by herself in my drawer.
Thanks! It was my pleasure.
Not exactly participating today. But you Robin, have been brainwashing me for a week or so with the name OLIVIA GIACOBETTI.Lol.So SOTD is En Passant.I’ve said this to a couple of people today:Heliotropin Heaven. It’s exactly right what I want for a hot Summer’s day!Happy Weekend NST!xo
That being said;my choice would have been Arquiste Flor y Canto!Maybe SOTD tomorrow!:-))
I considered Flor y Canto too.
It’s also an interesting Tuberose!I love it enough to have finished bottle nr 1 already….lol
Ha, then my work here is done 😯
Wearing The Scent of Departure Amsterdam AMS today. It is green, watery, slightly spicy and has a touch of soapy aldehydes.
Wearing Olfactive’s Lumiere Blanche, from a sample, so dabbed on. I’m thinking this one would probably be better sprayed on, and perhaps worn in warmer weather.
Didn’t have a lot to choose from for this one. But, found a sample of Moss Gown, Providence Perfume Co., so I’m wearing that for the first time. Interesting, and a good mossy green match to the rainy day out there. But it will take some time so see if it’s a like, let alone a love.
I realised I really need to catch up with the maisons nouveaux because the most recently founded brand I managed to find in my decant collection is Ortigia Sicilia (2006). Fico d’India it is.
… and it neatly covers the next Friday too 🙂
Wearing Olfactive Studios Ombre Indigo, my favorite from the line. Lovely floral leather. Happy Friday! I am soooo tired.
Spring arrives officially at 5:45 p.m. today, so I’m hoping the first FULL day of spring tomorrow will be a better weather day for those of you with snow today!
SOTD to greet spring’s arrival is the bright and refreshing Atelier Cologne Orange Sanguine. Blood orange and bitter orange are my favorite orange notes, so this one suits me to a T, ‘as is’ and unlayered. Other favorites include Pacifica Tuscan Blood Orange with its juicy raspberry, the lovely mix of blood orange and floral in Tocca Stella, and the embarassingly-named VS Very Sexy Dare, a very unlike-VS-smelling scent as there ever was, blood orange with a bit of floral and a haunting nutmeg note that lasts all the way down. It verges on the edge of masculine, which is probably why it didn’t last too long, but I love it, especially during the winter holiday season, the unique blood orange/nutmeg combo is one I’ve not smelled elsewhere.
Very Sexy Dare is indeed embarrassingly named, but sounds wonderful nonetheless. I’m off to see just how unavailable it is.
SOTD is Terry de Gunzburg Rose Infernale. This was love at first sniff, -and- the only incense-heavy fragrance that I’ve liked at all. It’s heady stuff, and it makes me very happy.
(Plus, the juice is such a cool color.)
You are right about the color! I wonder if it stains light colored cloth? The juice sounds very interesting.
I spritz very carefully. Let me know if you want some to try.
I would love a little sample of this to try! You can email me at my user name here at gmail dot com, and I will send you my address. How generous to offer!
I have found I love incense heavy fragrances, and am just starting to start comparing rose scents, so this would be right in my range of interest right now…
SOTD = Stephane Humbert Lucas 777 Khol de Bahrein
Do I win the prize today for longest perfume name?
The brand ws founded in 2012 by Stephane Humbert Lucas (SHL). SHL is also affiliated with Lez Nez and SoOud.
Holy powder, Batman! This is powdery iris at its best. It is also ambery and sweet. LOVE! I got a partial bottle of this and the juice is running alarmingly low.
Uh, oh! You are just dragging me down the rabbit hole! How does this compare to Iris Poudre, my current favorite Iris?
They are quite different in my opinion, even though they sanre notes of niolet, iris and amber. Iris Poudre starts off aldehylic on me (even though aldehydes is not listed as a note) and remains a fizzy iris until the fabulous vanillic-amber dry-down. Khol de Bahrein hits you right away with powdery iris and sweet amber. The drydown is amberish. Neither one is perfumey floral.
Ugh, can’t spell on my iphone…where’s spell check when you need it! same not sanre and violet not niolet….grrrr
Yum. One of the only iris scents I can wear. It doesn’t at all have that usual icy aloofness that I associate with iris. It’s like iris spun sugar at a carnival, all pink and gold. Um, maybe that doesn’t make any sense outside of my head.
Yes this makes sense. You are painting the prettiest picture!
I’m thinking of trying this one again later today. I love the name Khol de Bahrein. Sure is sweet, though – reminds me of the various loukhoum perfumes.
I remembered that you didn’t care for this one when you first tried it. Second chances!
I am wearing Regime des Fleurs Turquoise. It fits our category and smells like spring.
Another one I’ve never hear of. This line seems to have several interesting possibilities. Have you sniffed other ones besides the Thurquoise?
I’ve tried Dove Grey and it was the unfriendliest, most antisocial perfume to ever touch my skin
SOTD is Madhat Scents Embers. Very smoky and woody with hints of incense peaking thru. Yowza!
Peaking… piquing… peeking. Yup I speak English. Better, with caffeine….
I almost wore SantL! I might have to try Embers.
The bonfire has mostly cleared, and it’s turned into a cold (non-sweet) incense now. Yesssssss
He’s got Embers on clearance now. Get it before it’s gone….
Wearing Oriza Heliotrope Blanc, with thanks to the industrious Hajusuuri for hosting a split. It was introduced recently, but my understanding is it’s a revived house reissuing previous scents. Hope it counts! It’s nice today, almost 50, but it’s supposed to snow on Mon 🙁
It was too cold / snowy for me to wear Heliotrope Blanc today. I could have worn Chypre Mousse but opted for SHL 777 Khol de Bahrein.
A friend sent me a sample of O’Driu Linfedele Haiku, so that’s my new niche. Wow, this fragrance is interesting. I can’t say I’m overly fond of it, but I don’t dislike it. The herbal-medicine opening reminds me of the original Ricola cough drops. Herbal, but with not quite menthol-ish freshness to it. It’s calmed down now to herbs with leather saddle soap.
Wearing Mary Greenwell Plum; Fragrantica swears she started out in 2010. I think that was probably the last year in which I tried to sample interesting new releases. I threw up my hands in surrender after that – just waaaay too many.
I love Plum. Should have worn that today.
No post-2010 niche for me, not even samples (at least not at home – probably some in the office but I’m not there – Yay!). So digging around, I found crazylibellule and the poppies Tamara Charleston solid perfume. Had to bring the box over to the computer because I never remember how to spell it. Notes are lisylang, absinthe, and green mandarin. Nice green citrus with a little something else. Quite nice – should wear it more often.
I was going to wear Tauer La Maroc pour Elle, but while I was looking for my decant, I got seduced by Etro’s Shaal Nur. Well, it’s old niche, and I smell wonderful!
BTW – Robin – how did you get a picture of my ring?
🙂 Your ring.
Ha, we have our methods!
😉
You smell divine! I finally got a bottle, and am excited to be able to wear it whenever I want.
Hi all – I’m having fragrance fatigue today (although I like reading about them still). I tried La Religieuse again and it’s not winning me over. I don’t hate it but I don’t love it either.
I haven’t really been moved by La Religieuse so far either. I keep meaning to test it out again, but it just hasn’t been calling to me.
Meh! I had high hopes but one whiff of this from a tissue sprayed with this by the SA had me wrinkling my nose and turning my head (I was in a contrarian mood that day because the Barneys SA I dealt with for the Beauty Bag Event was incompetent) . I decided not to get a free sample (imagine that!).
Next!
Unfortunately I don’t have any new niche. I am wearing FM Eau de Magnolia, it is still very cold and hoping this reminds me of Spring and hot weather.
It’s New Old Niche, isn’t it? That should earn you partial credit.
I’m in 4160 Tuesdays, Tart’s Knicker Drawer. It’s actually very lady like, not tarty at all. In the tradition of The Guide – powdered raspberry.
I got less raspberry out of it, but it was mostly powdery vanilla on me. You’re right, no tarts here unless they’re dessert.
Scent twins with mals86 in Moon Bloom, which fortunately lasts a long time on me. For next Friday, I don’t think I own a single scent with fig, certainly nothing with fig in the name. Soliciting suggestions for a fig that doesn’t smell like the Newtons, which I think is my only exposure to fig up close.
Oh, Moon Bloom just does NOT last on me. Usually tuberose does. I have a little vial of tuberose EO that lasts for hours, and so do most tuberose frags, including the also all-natural Vamp a NY. Sigh.
My favorite figs are Hermes Jardin en Mediterranee and Pacifica Mediterranean Fig. If you have a Sephora nearby, you can probably get a sample of hte Hermes there (or Nordstrom) and Pacifica is at Whole Foods among other places (our Sephora doesn’t carry it any more which is sad, but yours might!).
Wearing Arquiste Boutonniere No.7 today. One of my favorite gardenias, but it hasn’t gotten much wear in a while. I got a good deal on a used bottle, and I’m glad I bought it.
Wearing Undergreen White. I am glad to have a FB of this in my collection; it so nicely renders the color it is named after.
Viktoria Minya’s Eau de Hongrie, which was in the little bag of samples I threw in my packing. I think I like Hedonist better, but this is nice, very honeyed. (Think Ginestet’s Botrytis ballpark) It died away fairly quickly, so I reapplied it at lunch. Nice! Be well.
In a rush today, so no perfume except lingering traces from 4170 tuesdays Sexiest Scent if that counts..
I liked this one from a sample.
I really liked it too. Going to try it a second time and then see if I need it 🙂
Last night I went through pending samples and found Stephane Humbert Lucas 777 O Hira and Oumma. I was happy with one on each wrist. O Hira is a beautiful amber. Oumma is a synthetic oud, and, yes, it smells like bandaids, but like bandaids made for Nefertiti, very beautiful bandaids. I’m going to test Khol de Bahrein today, too. I love the name, and if it was the one in that insane red bottle with the peacock blue gemstone, I might not be able to resist.
These 777 perfumes don’t disappoint me, in contrast to so many modern perfumes that have great top notes giving way to boring modern musks and woody ambers. Nonetheless, at $825 a bottle, O Hira will only ever be dabbed on from a sample vial. And, to be honest, does it really smell better than SSS Tabac Aurea? Definitely not $750 better. Nor is it indispensable like La Via del Profumo Mecca Balsam.
In summary, I’m glad I have a good stash of old niche to save me from the prices of the nouveau niche. 😉
Khol de Bahrein has a gold dome and a pinkish crystal. The red one is Qom Chilom; I think I have a sample for OsswaldNYC which means it passed the initial sniff test.
Jessica’s review inspired me to try the new LPRN Petales from Guerlain when I saw it at Sephora today! So far, I am enjoying it’s different stages of development on my skin. I might just complete my collection and go for a 1 oz bottle 🙂
I know, I’m sorry, it’s pretty much the farthest thing from niche! It was spontaneous! 😛
I meant to wear Neela Vermeire Mohur extrait but I was running late this morning and grabbed Vero Profumo Rozy EDP instead. Oh, well, at least Rozy is a new Vero fragrance and also a spicy rose!
Nice pic!
Eeking out what is left of my Rodin bis sample. I want a fb, but lordy, this stuff is spendy.
SOTE NV Mohur edp.
Hope I’m not too late coming back in here, but to answer meredifay’s comment above, I also tested Nitesurf and Bel Epoq from Regime des Fleurs, and they were nice, but Turquoise really got my attention the most, with its grassy dried flower notes.
Yes, that sounds good!
My SOTD is Aedes de Venustas Copal Azur, the last of my 2 ml sample. I really want a FB of this! I have to say, Aedes has done a fabulous job with their signature scents. Even Oeillet Bengale, the only one that wasn’t a total winner for me, is beautifully composed.
I’m tempted too, but maybe i’ll go slow with a decant first.
I was thinking the same thing.
Started the day with niche lite, Vetiver Fatale, because the one I really wanted to wear was just to va va va voom for work. I’m in a cloud of it tonight though. Hooked on this Shangri La.
SOTD was Ramon Monegal Entre Naranjos. Meh. Started off a bit sharp and green, quickly went to sweet orange, then a bit of something prickly and chemical, down to a faint musky orange within two hours. The twenty minutes I get from Atelier Cologne Orange Sanguine are more enjoyable and memorable. I did some decanting this evening, though, so now I smell like a cloud of assorted vanillas. Has anyone else noticed that when making samples, if you have 100ml of something, it will spray a nice, clean stream into your vial, but if you only have, say, 3-5ml of something, the spray will go everywhere?
For the record, I never got around to posting, but for Old School Niche Day, I wore Frederick Malle Geranium pour Monsieur, and for International Women’s Day, Jolie Madame (Germaine Cellier). GpM is pleasant but not for me, but I think I may need more Jolie Madame. I was a bit afraid to try it, but Luca Turin was right about it being easy to wear, at least when dabbed. I keep thinking I’ll have the whole weekend to catch up on blogs, and keep finding myself busy.
