Fragrances of the World 2015 by Michael Edwards ~ new perfume book

Posted by Robin on 25 February 2015 14 Comments

Fragrances of the World 2015

Michael Edwards has released the latest version of his “fragrance bible”, Fragrances of the World 2015. The 2015 edition (the 31st) lists over 8,000 fragrances grouped by fragrance family, and includes over 1,500 new releases. The book is used by numerous retailers to help customers find fragrances they might like based on the scent(s) they already know and enjoy.

The edition is bilingual (English/French), and can be ordered through Fragrances of the World for $210. There is a 10% discount if you use coupon code FOTW2015 and order before the end of March.

Oooh! I want this book! I try and figure out how I can justify this as a reference book for my library…….

Buy it and donate it to your local public library as a reference book only. That way it’s yours to refer to when you’re so inclined and, yet, you’ve performed a valuable service to the perfumista and non-perfumista public alike. No further justification needed (perhaps, also, a tax-deductible charitable donation?). :-)

I can’t even imagine how massive this book probably is! 8,000 fragrances…wonder what the number will be by 2016?

It’s just lists — no descriptions — so it’s not as big as it sounds.

I’v seen them use this at shops: if they don’t have what you want they look it up and seem to recommend others with presumably similar notes… As a compendium for private use it seems pretty much worthless.

I would agree with that. Unless you need to know the official fragrance family designation for some reason…

The online database is far more useful (more information), but also very expensive.

The online database is crazy expensive, isn’t it? $176US for ten log-in credits!

Yes. But the work to create it must be huge…he literally smells nearly every new fragrance that comes out in order to classify, plus compiles the other info. And then, the info is hugely useful to a relatively small group of people. So I “get” the reason for the high prices.

OMG! How I would love to own this book! Getting ready to have my 2nd knee surgery this summer. This book would be perfect for me to have during my recovery. It sure would make me feel better. :)

Wow, for the cost of the book I could have a bottle of something I’ve been wanting! I think the idea of having it as a library reference book is good, though–I might send my county library a request to add it.

I WANT this book! but I agree for that price I could have a bottle or two of perfume I’ve been really wanting. I’m sure it’s exhaustively researched but is it bound in gold?

Am thinking the huge amount of work Mr Edwards obviously does to produce his annual books is the reason he’s never managed to produce the ‘American feminine fragrances’ tome we were told was forthcoming all those years ago! A shame.
