Tuesday scent of the day 2/17

Posted by Robin on 17 February 2015 189 Comments

Fox U-bet chocolate syrup

Happy Tuesday! We are having a snow day here, our first of the year. How's the weather where you are, and what fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing Parfumerie Generale Musc Maori.

Reminder: 2/20 will be One Hit Wonder Friday: wear something that is the only fragrance you really like by the brand, with partial credit for a fragrance that is the only one made by the brand.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

The weather is nice around 8 degrees Celsius, and very sunny. I can only enjoy it from inside though as I’m working today.
My SOTD is Divine’s latest offering, Spirituelle. A nice and gentle rose. It reminds me a little of Mille et Une Roses.

The last time I visited Amsterdam it was 8 C, sunny and covered with snow. Paradise.

Last time for me it was late February and freezing cold with biting winds and temperatures around 0 Celsius. Only consolation was the sun and the brilliant blue sky (and the city’s nice atmosphere). We are going there in the beginning om May, hoping for something more summerlike :).
And we have the freezing cold around O Celsius here in Stockholm, Sweden atm. Thaw and then freezing again is a lethal combination, I am proceeding exceptionally slowly over all this ice.

I was very sorry they made difficult distribution or discontinued MeUR. It’s a very lovely fragrance when I need a light rose. Very nice for layering too. I have enough, but I’d probably wear it more often if I wasn’t so concerned about using it up!

Good morning! Today I am sampling Diptyque Eau Rose, which I received in a swap (Thank you, C.H!). It is very pretty but so light I have to put my nose right on top of it to smell it. I think this is one for a sprayer and a heavy hand.

You’re welcome! You might also give it another shot in the summer–in the heat it has a nice crisp feel, but yeah, I can’t say I really find it stands up to cold weather! :)

Beautiful day here but it’s supposed to deteriorate into rain and cold- blech!

SOTD is Caron Parfum Sacre from my sample stash. It was all incensey and civety for first half an hour then morphed into a rose for about 10 minutes, turned soapy for 5 minutes and now POOF! It’s all gone…

I’m predicting another sample stash raid before long.

All you folks in the hinterlands, stay warm and safe!

Oh dear. I had to wear Parfum Sacre a couple of times before I really fell for it. Started out lemon-pepper, like fish seasoning, then went very quiet. I couldn’t actually smell it the first two times I wore it, but the third was the charm. I got the rose and the benzoiny incense then.

Twinsies! At least for a short while anyway :)

This just didn’t last on me so I had to do another driveby of my sample stash and picked up Regina Harris Amber Vanilla, which is nice but not spectacular.

Its that kind of day : -/

Parfum Sacre is so lovely. I do find that the current version doesn’t tend to develop as well as the older/vintage. I only wear it a few times a year, but when it’s right, it’s right. You may want to try the Parfum Sacre (*special*) edp they released about 4 years ago – it has a softer more modern vanilla-musk drydown.

I had heard that it was reformulated in 2011 and most of my samples were purchased that year (I went a little hog wild with samples in 2011!) so I’m not sure which version I recieved. I’m inclined to think it was the newer reformulated version because it was so fleeting.

If I really loved it I might decide to track down the older formula but, like you, it’s not something I would wear very often so no point really. Too many other scents that make me weak in the knees!

We’re having unseasonably mild weather here in Oregon, and I went with Hermes 24, Faubourg with early spring in mind. (As a couple of other Oregonians have posted here in the past few days, we’ll suffer later for the lack of snowpack in the mountains later on.)

I am always joking and seriously trying to figure out how I can make profitable and viable shipping all our snow to you guys every year. Seriously. I can say the one thing the Poconos has going for it is lots of precip/water all year round.

Oh, Ann – wouldn’t that be great?! What we need is a gigantic pneumatic tube that would just suck up all the snow (well, okay, not ALL – we could leave you some to play in) at your end and deposit it neatly along the crest of the Cascade Mountains over here. Problem solved! (Why oh why don’t the governments of the world ask perfumistas for advice more often – we’re very creative problem-solvers!) :)

Yes, I found a cute house in an alley, three blocks from the metro, by a square with big trees. And there are Japanese restaurants around, and an easy connection to the Guerlain counter! Sooo thrilled, there are too many ugly houses and awful streets here. But heck, we have too many vinyl records, too many books, too much dinnerware. Thank you for the sympathy, fellow hoarder!

SOTD is Infusion D’Iris. Too sharp for the sudden cold snap. It will be better in spring and summer. I do not envy you in the north-east. We are supposed to be up to 51 degrees Fahrenheit today, so I can’t complain, but we have been having highs in the 60s and 70s, so we thought spring was about to begin. By the way Robin, what is that chocolate flavor syrup good for?

Adding…they make a kosher version for Passover with real sugar instead of HFCS, and I’m told that comes closest to the “real” egg cream taste. I have had egg creams in diners many times that taste nothing like what we had when I was a child, and suspect they weren’t using U-bet or they were using the “reformulated” version with HFCS

Interesting! So I’m guessing HFCS isn’t kosher (or at least, nobody markets an officially blessed version of it)? I try to avoid HFCS whenever possible – making a note to check out the kosher section in the grocery store.

Companies make kosher for Passover versions of their products because Ashkenazi Jews (from Eastern Europe, where the majority of American Jews’ ancestors came from) can’t eat corn during the holiday. Thus no HFCS.

I just finished Trigiani’s The Shoemaker’s Wife and egg creams figured prominently in the beginning. I’d never heard of them, and it sounds like the ones in the book are totally different from what you’re talking about. They were a raw beaten egg, with a spoonful of sugar and some cream.

Perfume restless – that totally described me yesterday. I was rampaging through old samples I’d not looked at in years. I don’t know what I was looking for (spring in a bottle?), but I tested about 6 frags yesterday and totally burned my nose out on oakmoss heavy scents and classic chypres by bedtime. I think I’ve “realized” Aromatics Elixir, but man she takes a heavy toll.

The weather is making me think of a Tom Robbins quote: “February is pitiless and it is boring.” A mix of Nirvana Black and Natori on my wrists for warmth and comfort today, particularly as I’m debating big questions relating to what I want to do with my life. Do I leave New York, or just switch apartments? Do I switch jobs? That sort of thing. This combo is providing a lot of comfort in this state of mind, and I’m grateful.

Still waiting on my La Fille de Berlin bottle….cannot WAIT to get it and waft at everyone. My coworkers are so sweet as to ooh and aah at my fragrances from time to time. They find it entertaining, as well as interesting to discuss different opinions. Particularly considering what so many of you have described (husbands disapproving, surly coworkers), I know I’m very lucky to have such tolerant and curious people around me, as long as I don’t overspritz.

Finding people who are curious about perfume is the best. I managed to pique the interest of the wife of a friend of mine–I hadn’t known her well because she was in school in another country when I first got to know her then-boyfriend, and the first times she and I really hung out were because she was curious about my perfume hobby. We went sniffing several times and she’s a really good friend (and starting to be a bit of a perfume hound herself!) Such a fun thing to share with someone, if they’re interested!

Isn’t it great? I’ve had such fun taking some of my friends out for sniffing adventures. And then of course meeting in person with all of the New York-based fumies is fantastic too. Another point for New York on the side of staying…? :)

I adore my coworkers. They are the main reason I am still here, and I almost don’t want to leave because they make my day to day life so happy. But progress must be made!

Also, I’ve enabled my little heart out with them – you’d be proud, Haju.

However, I will recommend that you consider a career coach, someone in your industry or demographic who can help you think through next steps. I’m doing this now and it’s the best idea I’ve had in a long time ;)

She’s all fixed up and high as a kite. She had a huge ovarian cyst that was also removed and will not like being confined and pain medicated for the next week but she’s really a trooper. Now we just have to figure out how to catch her wild kitten who won’t go into the trap. I’ve been trapping strays for years and have never found a more trap-wary feline. Maybe she’ll get desperate now that we have kitty-napped her mother.

Haven’t gotten close enough to her yet. I wish she was as friendly as her mother, who obviously was someone’s pet before being dumped and is slightly over affectionate. The kitten is finally at the stage where she only runs to the edge of the patio if you look at her through the window but she’s super wild- and gorgeous. She is a semi long haired calico with stubby little legs (not quite munchkin short but shorter than usual). She has the cutest black mask and black booger on her little nose, and one yellow foot.
My husband’s late tortie had a blonde foot and he used to pick her up, swing her around and over onto her back and sing “I’ve got Mika, yes I do. I’ve got Mika, one blonde shoe” as he grabbed her foot. He was very excited to see that the kitten has an orange foot, although I doubt she will ever be tame enough to ride around on his shoulder. We’re all total animal dorks here.

I used to collect baseball card-sized original art and I have a bunch of her cat paintings. I love cats but don’t have one now and probably never will because having pets is a lot of work!

Wore a bunch of Coco Noir from my sample to sleep night, because i knew i could over spray in the comfort of my own home, and that one seems to need a good over spray to be what i want it to be.
Wearing Beige today, from another sample. Surprised by how much i enjoy this one in late winter. Lay year i considered it much more of a spring thing. The honey really grounds this one for me.

Chocolate seems like a great choice for Mardi Gras. I didn’t think about chocolate, but went caramel–Kiki EdP today, cool lavender and sensual caramel and wild passion fruit all smashed into one fragrance, but it works.

Kiki EdP has always hit me as a vivid painting of a woman’s profile, and her expression changes on subsequent viewings. I’m not explaining this well, apologies, but it is not boring, and like nothing else. Be well :D

My SOTD is Carnation by Laboissiere Parfums Paris. There is no way that something this good is going to survive IFRA, so I’ve been looking for a replacement. I’ve been purchasing samples of the carnation frags that you kind folks have recommended.

The first one that I tried was L’Heure Convoitee II by Cartier. It has many qualities that I like, but, unortunately, it has a persistent note that I do not like that smells like mildew and rancid butter. I’ve smelled this in other frags, but I’m not sure what it is.

The weather: overcast and 55 degrees; supposed to reach a high of 67 degrees.

Because of the IFRA, I don’t think you’ll be finding any modern carnations that are going to satisfy you. So see if you can find a backup of the Laboissier (which is lovely–I’ve tried it). I know that Jacqueline Perfumery in San Francisco has it. Also, it’s pretty easy to find vintage Bellodgia by Caron, so hunt around for that.

Thanks for the tip on the place in S.F.!

I bought a new bottle of Bellodgia about 15 years ago. There is something dark and dank in it that does not agree with me, but the carnation in it is very nice. I’ve heard that that dark/dank quality is common in Carons (or at least older formulations)?

I think “dark and dank” is part of the standard Caron base. I’d recommend Guerlain’s Terracotta Voile d’Ete for a lighter carnation. Fairly reasonable on ebay. Otherwise they’ve made it part of the Les Parisiennes line in the bee bottles so not so reasonable there.

My first SOTD in the morning was a spray from an old sample of L’air de rien by Miller Harris. As it turned out, the sample was too old and the perfume was bad (lesson learned: don’t hoard samples, use them while they’re still good!). I had to take another shower and scrub it…meh
The second try at SOTD was more successful – Ineke Field notes from Paris.

I smell like tuberose jasmine heaven right now, snow and cold be damned!!! (And, btw, Jasmin Rouge is so gorgeous, but it is almost identical to L’AP Haie Fleurie…. which is gone, so I guess it’s good that JR is around to satisfy massive jasmine cravings.)

I’m trying Antonia’s Flowers EDP but I might throw some Anya’s Garden Temple on the other wrist to see how that is. We finally got a snow day, but it’s really rather nice out! :)

Third day of testing Terre d’Hermes edt for me. It reminds me very much of The Different Company Sel de Vetiver which was released the same year and was created by J. C. Ellena’s daughter. I wonder if there was any transfer of ideas between father and daughter during the creation of these scents. They’re like vetiver land and sea. I really do like Terre d’Hermes and I may end up ordering one of those 12.5 ml spray bottles off of eBay.

Also, I’m very impressed with the samples Hermes sent me. Everything came packaged neatly in little orange boxes. If they ever bring the 4×15 ml coffrets to Canada then watch out.

Sel de Vetiver makes me think of sea spray, and Terre d’Hermes of the smell of a sun-baked boulder near the coast :) Tom Ford’s Grey Vetiver is quite addictive too – it’s much less airy and diffusive than Sel de Vetiver, but salty, dense and marine…

Sun baked boulder near the coast. I like that. I wish I could be basking on that boulder right now. I’ll kept an eye out for Grey Vetiver.

If you like any from the Hermessence line, they do now have the “compose a set” (4 x 15 ml mix and match) option online in Canada for those scents.

I was referring to the non-Hermessence mix and match set as seen on the American site. I’m less interested in the Hermessence line but I did get samples of Brin de Reglisse and Vetiver Tonka. Thanks for the heads up.

I live in Houston, TX. This past weekend, it was hot outside. We were in the mid 70’s, but the sun made it feel like we were in the 80’s. The temperature dropped last night and this morning it was in the 30’s. That’s cold for our neck of the woods! My SOTD is Tom Ford’s Santal Blush. It seems like a nice fragrance to go with sweater weather. Stay warm everyone!

We Floridians are getting that front right now. Raining cats and dogs and behind that is the coldest weather of the season with predictions that it may drop down to mid to high 30’s!! Brrrr!

      Bundle up and stay warm!

Hey, neighbor! We had sleet on the southern end of town today, which is crazy. The snow socked-in folks here at NST will laugh, but after 70s yesterday, that is just weird. Enjoying any cold weather scents while we can is a good plan. Santal Blush sounds cozy. I’ll have to brave Mt Sample to find it. I know it’s here somewhere ;)

Here in San Francisco it’s chilly and foggy and the woodiness of Angelique Sous La Pluie is really hitting the spot. It’s my second day sampling this and I am really loving it! Musc Maori sounds great for a snowy day and it is high on my to try list.

I am in the middle of a seemingly endless academic committee meeting, online. Had to take a minute to rush to the perfume cabinet, and spray on some Tolu in order to lift my flagging spirits. It worked!

I’m in Rahät Loukoum, again. It’s turning into this winter’s scenttrack! It’s just so comforting. At least my driving instructor did not roll the window down in the snow like he did when I wore 24 Faubourg : P

Wearing vetiver EO with Amour de Cacao on top (most probably inspired by the picture! The oil has kind of disappeared now, 5 hours later by the cocoa is going strong! The layering combo was not bad, but not nice enough to repeat.

Mmm…Vetiver EO is the best cheap thrill out there imo. Have you tried adding a few drops to a bath? It’s very relaxing.

I miss egg creams! And I wish I had one of those Swedish pastries.

It’s 62F, sunny, and Mt. Hood is visible in all its glory today. I am wearing the incomparable Bois des Iles parfum and hanging pendant lights today.

Ah, Mount Hood. I lived in PDX for three years, and rode the #12 into work for about a year until we moved downtown. I never got tired of looking at Mt Hood when it was out. How amazing! So many people didn’t look. How can you be ho-hum about a volcano?! I felt like saying: don’t you know how amazing it is to see that? To live here?! PDX is awesome. And you smell really good too!!

Just before the last storm hit, I was feeling sorry for myself and splashed out for a couple of nst fab fridays 5 ml decants of Annick Goutal le muguet, one for me and one for my neice. All this snow is making me crave lotv, lilac, freesia etc. This is totally not my taste usually, but this crazy weather (Boston has gotten 96 inches of snow so far this winter, most of it in this month) is bringing out my inner Laura Ashley.
So le Muguet arrived today and I tried it. It’s nice (hubby said “interesting” code for “not good”) But I think it’s a nice breath of spring.

ha! I’m so glad you can relate to the inner Laura Ashley. those pretty flower notes make me imagine I am a character in this fine film (Whatever Happened to Baby Jane):
“Jane Hudson (Bette Davis) is an aging child star left to care for her wheelchair-bound sister Blanche (Joan Crawford), also a former child actress. Stuck living together in a mansion in old Hollywood, Blanche plots to get even with Jane for the car crash that left her crippled years earlier. But Jane is desperate to keep Blanche imprisoned as she plans a new rise to fame, and tries to hide Blanche’s existence from doctors, visitors and neighbors while she devises a way to get rid of her sister.”

Our weather is mild today, a bit cloudy this morning, sunny this afternoon in the SW US. Today is Pancake Day 2015 (aka Shrove Tuesday), so our family had chocolate chip pancakes and hot chocolate for dinner.

I am not usually a fan of immortelle in fragrance. It overwhelms me, but I am sniffing Like This today. Some say that there is a hint of maple syrup there because of the immortelle. I mostly smell gingery spices and a bit of the browned-sugar smell from the top of crème brûlée.
